The Souljazz Orchestra – Under Burning Skies
Friday, August 11th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Souljazz Orchestra – Under Burning Skies

Image: 1610693 Canada’s fastest moving and hardest working collective are back with one of their finest albums to date, a brand new journey into tropical, soul and jazz styles on their scorching new release, ‘Under Burning Skies’.

Tracklisting:
1. Dog Eat Dog
2. Lufunki
3. Sorrow Fly Away
4. Tambour À Deux Peaux
5. Under Burning Skies
6. Holla Holla
7. Is Yeelyel
8. Adawe Boogie
9. Oublier Pour Un Jour
10. Aduna Jarul Naawo

Turbulent times call for strong voices and The Souljazz Orchestra’s new set packs a suitably heavy lyrical punch, with wry observations and an urge for progressive change. Musically, the band continue to push the limits, dusting off ‘80s vintage synthesizers and early drum machines for the first time, bringing lo fi disco, boogie and electro touches to their trademark horn arrangements and earthy analogue sound. The fruits are a-plenty and the group sound at their confident and versatile best from start to finish.
Opener ‘Dog Eat Dog’ powers in with Mabinuori Idowu and Philippe Lafrenière lambasting the powerful and the corrupt over an infectious Afro-disco groove, ‘Lufunki’ takes the group right back to their B-Boy roots, bringing the Afro vibes to Beat Street and ‘Is Yeelyel’ delivers a killer rework of an obscure original by
Somalian super-group Dur-Dur Band. The band go on exploring their passion for French Caribbean styles on the beautiful, lilting ‘Oublier Pour Un Jour’ and ‘Tambour À Deux Peaux’ and they take time for reflection on the potent instrumental title track and poignant closer ‘Aduna Jarul Naawo’, featuring the vocals of Élage Mbaye. The Souljazz Orchestra continue to be an unstoppable force. Nominated for a Canadian Juno award for the third time in 2016, the band regularly tear up venues worldwide through their punishing touring schedule – they have played to audiences in over two dozen countries across the globe and have shared bills along the way with heavyweights as varied as Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, and Femi Kuti. Not many bands out there have been going for 15 years with their original line-up still intact while still sounding as fresh as this. As saxophonist Ray Murray says, “Souljazz is more than just a band for us, it’s a way of life.” ‘Under Burning Skies’ is released on LP, CD, cassette and digital formats. The LP is pressed on bright yellow vinyl and all formats feature superb illustrated artwork by The Souljazz Orchestra’s Pierre Chrétien.

KEY POINTS:

Eliot Lipp – Skywave
Thursday, June 1st, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Eliot Lipp – Skywave

Image: 1610384 Austin-based musician Eliot Lipp delivers “Skywave”, an album Lipp has been working on for the past several months. With influences from sci-fi soundtracks and 70s and 80s funk, he channels a collection of weird, high-definition, melodic beats. In these nine songs Lipp feels he “might have everything I want to say in one moment.” Recreating key musical moments in a current and relatable way was the goal in producing Skywave and giving himself permission to take some risks as well.

With a versatile approach, Lipp has created opportunities to connect with some of the artists he first looked up to, playing in cities across America and abroad always returning to his hometown in the Pacific Northwest.

Collaboration plays a role in all his albums. He’s been a fan of Emancipator for a years now and was beyond excited to get his “Not Quite Awake” remix. He asked DMC champ Chris Karns to scratch on ‘Joyride’. In addition to doing cuts, Chris ended up playing live drums and layering unique vocal samples. ‘Reflection’ came from a jam session with Gibbz and Cherub in their Nashville studio.

One of Lipp’s biggest musical influences last year came from a group of producers from Seattle that call themselves Fish Tank Friends. Most of them had a hand in the early stages of ‘Spiders’.

With monthly trips planned from Texas back to Washington, he anticipates more evenings surrounded by friends, fans, and new listeners where he brings everyone together through the touch of a button.

1. I Told Ya
2. Sun Comes Out
3. Not Quite Awake (Emancipator Remix)
4. Joyride
5. Re?ection
6. Tides
7. Spiders
8. Advance
9. Rise Fall Rise

• Eliot Lipp’s follow up to his 2016 album “Come To Life,” featuring a remix from Emancipator and collaborations with Cherub and Gibbz
• Press and radio promo for the album will be handled by Terrorbird
• With in?uences from sci-f soundtracks and 70s and 80s funk, he channels a collection of weird, high-defnition, melodic beats Available from 21.07.2017

NAUTILUS is a trio centered around drummer Toshiyuki Sasaki, formed in 2014
along with its Bassist Shigeki Umezawa and Keyboardist Daisuke Takeuchi.
Their distinctive style, which can be summarized as the modern rare groove,
embodies a mixture of jazz, funk, disco, soul and even hip hop. The conception of
NAUTILUS is drawn not only from the composition “Nautilus” written by Bob
James, but also from an American submarine that actually existed, thus
resembling their contemporary style that carries on the rare groove music of the
70s in an abyssal imagery.
Sasaki’s versatile, yet solid drumming combined with Umezawa’s full- bodied,
powerful bass and Takeuchi’s classically-trained prowess produces an
exceptional sound unique all on its own.

Blay Ambolley, and his Sekondi Highlife Band (The Creator of Highlife/Afro/ Jazz Dance Music)
The Legendary Gyedu Blay Ambolley from Ghana, West Africa and his Sekondi Band has
29 music albums to his credit. The most recent album “The African Soul “was released in
2015 and still remains a hit for Highlife/Afro/Jazz dance music fans around the world.
Ambolley was born in the city of Sekondi-Takoradi, in the Western Region of Ghana, in
West Africa. The multi-talented, International, Ghanaian Musician celebrated his “Silver
Jubilee” in music in 1998. He taught himself to play the flute as a first instrument in his
early years of musical interest dating back to the age of eight, when he began playing with
his father’s flute. The young music enthusiast continued to learn the rudiments of music
from the late’ Sammy Lartey and Ebo Taylor. During the sixties, the young aspiring
musician was impressed with the music he heard on the popular radio show, “Voice of
America Jazz Hour.” That sixties show featured such jazz giants as Jimmy Smith, Max
Roach, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ella
Fitzgerald and Billie Eckstie… all of whom became part of Ambolley’s early musical
experience.
This versatile, irrepressible singer, songwriter, producer and “musical- life-force” exploded
on the music scene in 1973 with a jazzy highlife sound called ‘SIMIGWA-DO’.
He has toured throughout West Africa, Europe, Canada, and the United States and has
performed on the same stage with some of the world’s most celebrated artistes such as,
Miriam Makeba of South Afrika, the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti of Nigeria, the late George
Howard, Angela Bofill, Norman Connors, Manu Dibango, Lakeside, Chikuzan Takahashi of
Japan, Ricardo Estrada of Cuba, Mayuto Correa of Brazil and toured Ghana with Oscar
Brashear and Michael Session. The celebrated musician has received numerous
prestigious awards, for example a lifetime achievement award and Inducted into the music
hall of fame by Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in California and an
award from the Board of Supervisors and the City Council of the State of California for
bridging the gap between Africa and African American music. He also received a lifetime
achievement award at the Ghana Music Awards in 2013.
Very interesting: in June 2016 the Embassy in Washington DC awarded BLAY
AMBOLLEY for introducing the first ever commercially recorded rap style of music in
1973 and not the Sugar Hill Gang as the Guinness book of record says.
Gyedu-Blay Ambolley has crafted the ability to combine a unique sound and melody with
funny lyrics and dancing to his music as is well documented that “the genre of his music is
entertainingly elevating and spiritually inescapable”, such that its uniqueness transcends
all musical categories. Available from 12.05.2017

Matuki – Sanimenteren / INJO (Shunya Remix)
Thursday, December 1st, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Matuki – Sanimenteren / INJO (Shunya Remix)

Image: 1607606 12-piece Afro-beat band Matuki are releasing their debut 7″ single on December 2nd via Stutter & Twitch, which paints a juxtaposed image of the band’s versatile style. Side A ‘Sanimenteren’ showcases fiery horn melodies and liquid guitar riffs, whereas Side B ‘INJO’ changes direction completely as Manchester producer Shunya takes the reins. By morphing Matuki’s steadfast rhythm into a lucid downtempo glitch, Shunya creates a unique and mesmerizing new perspective towards the urban band’s signature style.

‘Turbo-boosted grooves and fusing Afro Manding with intoxicating Fela Kuti horn lines, Matuki creates a rhythm so deep and hypnotic it takes you on a journey’ – Rhythm Passport

‘Matuki mix the classic ingredients – brass, beats, vocals and electricity – into something suitably hot’n’spicy…, If Bristol’s Afrobeat scene gets any hotter we might as well move to Lagos’ – Canteen Bristol

Fronted by master drummer and vocalist, Abraham Ebou Sanyang (Savanna, Magoma), Matuki mixes traditional afro-beat sounds with heavy doses of contemporary urban funk into an exciting concoction of world music. Collaborating with the likes of Bristol Samba, Jamba Horns and a variety of versatile session musicians, the densely talented ensemble infuse years of wisdom and experience into their music. After a successful debut performance at Glastonbury Festival’s Glade Stage, 2016 saw the airwaves overflowing with the band’s signature tracks. Matuki received airtime on BCFM, Bristol City Radio, Radio Ujima and Radio Helsinki, and some of their repertoire was also featured on playlists curated by DJ Hiphoppapotamus and Miles Chambers of Lyrical Minded. Touring the UK festival circuit, with appearances at Secret Garden Party, Green Man, Farmfest, Kendal Calling, and Glastonbury, Matuki have been transforming unassuming audiences into dancing frenzies wherever they perform.

Acid Arab – Musique De France
Saturday, September 10th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Acid Arab – Musique De France

Image: 1606366 The debut album from the mighty Parisian electronic music crew Acid Arab, who have been putting European festival and club audiences under a spell with their intoxicating blend of sharp Western electronic music with Eastern sounds and vocals. Also available as 140g vinyl with deluxe packaging and download card included.

Formed in 2012 by Parisian DJs Guido Minisky and Hervé Carvalho, their concept was to create a space for Arab culture in the world of contemporary electronic music. They laid down groundwork by releasing several EPs (the Collections series) on electronic music label Versatile, featuring collabs, remixes and tracks by other artists.

No banging techno spiced up with darbouka samples here… no standard dance music with orientalist clichés: Acid Arab’s music is sincere and deep. It’s not a collage, not an appropriation, not even a “fusion”. It originates from encounters on equal terms between different worlds. Between instruments, rhythms, melodic modes, musical technologies… and people.

For ‘Musique de France’, Acid Arab have worked with a number of guests. To paint a complete picture, they needed voices, and some instruments: keyboards played by Kenzi Bourras and stellar Syrian musician Rizan Said. There’s vocals and saz playing by Istanbul’s Cem Yildiz (who wrote the famous song Kime ne for his band Insanlar), and vocals by Yemenite sister trio A-WA (who gained plenty of international kudos with the very first song they released, Habibi Galbi, which got remixed by Acid Arab). And collaborations with Paris-based luminaries of Franco-Arabic music such as rocker Rachid Taha, raï fusion pioneer Sofiane Saidi, as well as gnawa musician/singer Jawad El Garrouge.

Various – Samples Outta L.A. – Funk (Ltd. Colored Vinyl+MP3)

Image: 1604610 Samples Outta L.A. «FUNK»If the end of the 80’s marked the
explosive beginning of Gangsta Rap, with the reign of the group
NWA. It was Dr Dre’s first album, with his innovative vision and
sophisticated productions that brought the trend G-Funk to new
heights.

Tracklist LP :

A1 Leon Haywood – I Want’a Do Something Freaky To You
A2 Parliament – Star Child (Mothership Connection)
A3 The Ohio Players – Funky Worm
A4 Quincy Jones – Body Heat
A5 The Bar-Kays – Let’s Have Some Fun
A6 Brass Construction – Get Up To Get Down

B1 Roger – So Ruff So Tuff
B2 One Way – Cutie Pie
B3 George Clinton – Atomic Dog
B4 Zapp – Heartbreaker Part 1
B5 Kleeer – Intimate Connection

This laidback sound that reflected the cool, sunny image of California can be found in the Leon Haywood track sampled on
the classic “Nuthin But a G Thang”. Influenced by the groove and the tone of P-Funk music, lots of rappers dug into the
discography of George Clinton and his 2 groups Parliament & Funkadelic, with 3 tracks included in the selection. The
synthesizer/heavy bass mix was already used by DJ Quik and Eazy E’s protégés, Above The Law, sampling funk groups
such as Brass Construction, One Way, the Bar-kays or Fatback. While LBC Crew, signed and produced by Snoop Dogg,
claimed the killer track “heartbreaker” from the electronic funk group Zapp, Ice Cube took the the beat and the funky guitar
of leader Roger Troutman on “how to survive in South Central” contrasting a more melodic sound with a sample from Gap
Band. Impossible not to mention the Ohio Players with their track “Funky worm” which is the basis of any respectable Wast
Coast anthem. Finally the symbolic and versatile 2pac, who rapped on tracks having sampled tunes as varied as a spatial
jazz-funk from Quincy Jones, or an 80s classic funk from Kleer on the “California love” remix. Enjoy ! Available from 05.08.2016

Marlow – In The Backroom

TRACKLISTING LP
A1 Marlow – Who’s This
A2 Marlow – Kaffee Türkisch
A3 Marlow & ComixXx – Something Is Coming feat. Stee Downes
A4 Marlow – Your Softness
B1 Marlow – Can’t Stop
B2 Marlow – Watch Your Step feat Capitol A

B4 Marlow & ComixXx – Shimmy Shimmy Shake
C1 Marlow – Ain’t No feat. Capitol A
C2 Marlow – Backroom feat. Pete Josef

C4 Marlow & Trüby – Windy City
D1 Marlow – I Do, We Do
D2 Marlow – Away feat. Ursula Rucker
D3 Marlow – For Blood The Crowd Bays feat.Pete Josef
D4 Marlow – Forstforscher feat. Flowin Immo

Good things come to those who wait. That’s probably what the Leipzig socialized, now
Weimar based Mario Weise aka Marlow was thinking, too. His first official, proper album
by the name of “In The Backroom” has been in the pipeline for two years now. Since his
EP “Backroom”, released in March 2014 on Sonar Kollektiv (SK265), we are waiting with
bated breath for the therewith auspiciously announced longplayer, which – now finally here
– actually does fires off one highlight after another.
There’s of course the 80ies funk inspired ex ante single with Pete Josef on vocals, the
even more LA electro funk derived collaborations with US MC Capitol A „Watch Your
Step“ and „Ain’t No“ or the zippy clubhit “Shimmy Shimmy Shake” and the rousing, singa-
long “Something Is Coming” in cooperation with his former production partner
ComixXx. This is not Marlow with a higgledy-piggledy mob of sidekicks though. „Kaffee
Türkisch“, „Your Softness“ and „Can’t Stop“ demonstrate gloriously where the versatile
producer has deep roots in: Soulful hip-hop with a bass-heavy lateral position. And when
singer Ursula Rucker helps him out on “Away” nothing seems to be impossible on this
debut of his. It’s not a coincidence that Marlow’s music has already been released on
Moon Harbour, Room With A View, Fifty Fathoms Deep and Objektivity. But it took
some time until he now finally found with Sonar Kollektiv the right outlet for his utopia. The
label itself pressed every button as well to turn “In The Backroom” into a modern
masterpiece of Neo Funk. Next to the afore mentioned collaborations further contributions
come from the Black Forest based Rainer Trüby (“Windy City”), the German rapper
Flowin Immo (“Forst Forscher”) and Stee Downes (“Something Is Coming”). Altogether
Marlow animates all of these sixteen tracks off his more than impressive debut with
imperious historical awareness and finesse.
That’s exactly why “In The Backroom” is such a delight, because it expertly masters the
balance act between Soul, Hip-Hop, Funk, Groove and pop appeal.

Daniela Casa – Arte Moderna
Thursday, June 9th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Daniela Casa – Arte Moderna

Image: 1604538 Filed neatly and undisturbed within the micro-genre of 1970’s Italian artsploitation, amongst films soundtracks such as Girl With The Crystal Plumage, A Quiet Place In The Country and House With The Laughing Windows, this obscure library LP is one of the few fully formed concept albums from the recently reappraised discography of Rome’s most versatile and adventurous female production-music composer Daniela Casa. Once destined for a shelf life within the storage rooms of defunct TV studios and educational facilities Daniela’s previously strictly commercially unavailable music has in recent years been given new focus at the hands of open-minded disc detectives and sonic salvage hunters earning Casa’s distinctive feminine take on experimental instrumental mood and movie compositions a place next to her widely respected masculine counterparts such as Alessandro Alessandroni, AR Luciani, Pierro Umiliani, Morricone and Nicolai.

Sharing tight studio space and strict syndication schedules with all of the aforementioned artists (under commission from Romano Di Bari’s fervently independent Flipper music factory) Daniela Casa embraced a liberating wind change in affordable music technology which opened doors for uninhabited solo compositions in home studios taking advantage of communal recording consoles and domestic synthesisers which nurtured a lesser-documented creative family tree (or rather secret society) and paved the way for individualistic projects from the likes of Magnetic System’s Fabio Frizzi and Goblin’s Claudio Simonetti. Here, on this repress of the impossibly rare, one-time subscription-only album, Arte Moderna, we find Daniela at her versatile best creating a wide thematic suite (based on paintings and sculptures in an abstract art gallery) for which she would deploy mostly organic and acoustic instruments to construct a set of unorthodox compositions straddling avant garde, free jazz and Giallo tension (with some brief moments of brooding electronics and italian pop). Veering from her stylistic pop interests (which clearly included a fondness for the music of Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin) Daniela Casa’s Arte Moderna saw her adopt a less era specific approach combining neo-classical elements and piano improvisations akin to the likes of France’s Francois Tusques or Burton Greene, or America’s Mal Waldron without compromising her strong narrative personality for this unique abstracted picture music.

Unintentionally but profoundly political in her prolific existence Daniela Casa’s contribution to a predominantly male industry earned her a small clutch of inspired idiosyncratic Italian female bedfellows such as Nora Orlandi, Giullia De Muittis (aka Kema), Fiorella Fratini, Emma De Angelis and Maria Teresa Luciani, who, with faceless anti-celebrity as its essence, never benefitted the wider critical focus that much of this music now duly commands on the collectors circuit. Finders Keepers Records in continued collaboration with the Di Barri company, with the Casa/Ducros family blessing, are now proud to shine new light on this sonic sculptures and provide a fresh context where educated music listeners are ready to fill the gaps between Delia Derbyshire, Ennio Morricone, Suzanne Ciani and Harry Partch and patronise a very welcome considered alternative to the recent rise in popularity of Italian Giallo soundtracks from a seldom savoured feminine creative vantage point. Daniela’s musical paintings can now be unveiled to the public for the first time, with Modern Art sounding as contemporary as it did when it was recorded forty years ago. The gallery is now open for limited sittings, discerning ears and open minds.

Bruno Spoerri – Langstrasse Zwischen 12 Und 12
Thursday, May 12th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Bruno Spoerri – Langstrasse Zwischen 12 Und 12

Image: 1604124 From his seemingly bottomless well of unreleased conceptual pop, jazz and pioneering electronic experiments, Swiss composer Bruno Spoerri, in conjunction with long term collaborators Finders Keepers, finally unleashes the master tapes to an obscure 1972 feature length documentary called Langstrasse Zwischen 12 und 12 (Long Street Between Midday And Midnight). Directed by Gianni Paggi (who had also worked on Swiss pop music weekly Hits A Gogo) and radio host and author Max Rüeger this seldom seen film studied the stark counter balance between the lifestyles of the inhabitants of Zurich’s famous Langstrasse – a varied and vibrant stretch of road in centre of the city which played host to a unique mix of contrasting cultural and social groups, working class families and energetic creatives. Langstrasse Zwischen 12 und 12 explored real-life stories of family run businesses, schools, nine to five commuters and the contrasting nightlife scene including the city’s liberal after hours red light district. To accentuate the ironic and slightly schizophrenic nature of the production Paggi and Rüeger called upon Spoerri as one of the country’s most versatile instrumental composers to share a first-hand impression of the area as a local himself. Exploring a wide range of musical disciplines from early modified synthesisers to rock rhythms via found sounds, jazz, folk and traditional Greek music, Spoerri successfully infused vibrant bursts of sonic colour into the monochrome imagery of the programme, creating a floating narrative undercurrent quite unlike anything heard on regular Swiss TV during the era.

In scoring such a project to a precise deadline Spoerri would require a trusted group of regular musicians, many of whom would appear on collectable records by Swiss groups such as The Metronome Quintet, The Rainbow Orchestra and Emphasis. As a leader of The Metronome Quintet himself Bruno was comfortable working alongside reliable members Fernando Vicencio (sax and flute), Ueli Staub (vibes, keys and percussion) and drummer Rolf Bänninger – who’s prominent playing is best exemplified on the previous Finders Keepers/Spoerri LP Hommage Au Fromage. Other players on this session include Latin multi-instrumentalist Antonio Conde who had simultaneously bonded with Vincencio in the jazz rock super group The Rainbow Orchestra under famous guitarist/soundtrack composer Pierre Cavali (see record FKR008). Another Cavali/Vincencio collaborator to appear on this album is pianist Renato Anselmi who would later join both musicians in the band Emphasis – vital to this session Renato Anselmi would provide extra keyboards to Bruno’s experimental and textural synthesiser tones. Later in the 1970s Spoerri would also enlist Anselmi to play on the soundtrack to art house film Lilith (recently sampled by US rapper Jay Z. For hardcore collectors of European jazz the appearance of trumpeter Franco Ambrosetti might warrant some deserved attention. A firm fixture on the Swiss jazz scene alongside Spoerri and regularly playing with George Gruntz, Ambrosetti’s earlier work on records alongside players like American sax man Shahib Shihab or French saxophonist Barney Wilen remain some of the most expensive original items on the collectors market. The final icing on the cake for this session would be the inclusion of Switzerland’s leading harmonica player Heinz Pfenninger, a welcome addition to the group having played with Ueli Staub in the award-winning Roby Weber Quartet (Pfenninger can also be heard playing bass alongside Rolf Bänninger on Spoerri’s aforementioned Hommage Au Fromage LP).

Like most of Bruno’s releases on Finders Keepers Langstrasse Zwischen 12 und 12 sees the artist explore unique new territories, combining the skill of incredibly talented musicians and combining his own discoveries in the realms of electronic music and his own brand of post- concrète found sound application which would appear on his rare postcard records made for industrial companies utilising wristwatches, pneumatic drills and forklift trucks as essential parts of his orchestral palette. This early 70’s glimpse into Spoerri’s narrative composition for the small screen captures an important European artist-cum-scientist treading a seldom trodden path between experimental pop, jazz and music technology in its infancy

J-Zone – Backyard Breaks
Friday, November 20th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on J-Zone – Backyard Breaks

Image: 1600998 Producer/ drummer/ writer/ DJ/ MC J-Zone returns to the fold with Backyard Breaks, a follow-up to his debut drum break LP, 2014’s Lunch Breaks. This 18-cut offering continues where its predecessor left off, but offers more variety in a smaller package. Where Lunch Breaks channeled the drum mojo of the late 1960s exclusively, Backyard Breaks explores a wider sonic timeline of drumming and recording. The more focused sounds of the mid and late 1970s are also explored here, as well as some of the less orthodox rhythms and fills from those eras, giving the sampling producer a mixture of sounds to work with. Percussionist Ray May adds congas to a handful of tracks to mix things up and capture the b-boy spirit, while more options in the way of mikes, drum kits, snares and cymbals – in addition to more head room with the recording levels for more producer control – make Backyard Breaks a well-rounded follow-up to its predecessor.

Between the recording of Lunch Breaks and Backyard Breaks, J-Zone has done studio drumming and sample replays for Danger Mouse, Marco Polo, RA the Rugged Man, Czarface (7L & Esoteric and Inspektah Deck), Apathy and many others, as well as providing drum tracks for film scores like CNN’s Fresh Dressed and the Stretch and Bobbito Documentary. Meeting the demands of producers and musicians, constructive feedback from Lunch Breaks and continuous research and practice have all aided J-Zone in presenting a more useful and versatile break record for producers looking for a classic break beat sound.

Time Wharp – Time Wharp
Saturday, May 16th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Time Wharp – Time Wharp

Image: 1597283 Time Wharp, the eponymous debut full-length of Atlanta-
born, Brooklyn-based producer Patrick Loggins, is an
uplifting treatise on minimal synth wave and house music.
The album reveals a patiently crafted sound rife with
depth and subtle complexities. Previous releases,
including 2012’s BLK EP for Astro Nautico, fitted simple
sine and triangle tones to stripped down emotive beats
and bass. On Time Wharp, Loggins extends this sonic
signature to combine meditative synthesis with house
and techno. The result is versatile, fueling dancefloor
excitement and introspective pause in equal share – a
kinetic calm constantly at play with its own duality.
Chopped up live drum patterns and mantric vocal hooks
provide the album’s rhythmic sediment, with insistent
saxophones and walled up synth bliss washing in and out
of the stereo field for dynamic effect. On ‘Market Solution’
and ‘Tophat,’ mesmeric synthesizers take the fore,
brooding and bubbling over no-nonsense four-on-the-
floor drum shuffles. The placid library tones and ambient
textures of ‘Castle’ and ‘Median’ provide a peaceful,
contemplative foil, until triumphant, upbeat singles like
‘Cole Dub’ break the spell, inheriting the glorious soulful
clarity and dancefloor efficiency of New York house.
Throughout Time Wharp’s eight tracks, an air of
patience and maturity is born of repetition, the hallmark
of a producer who has effectively fused his influences
into a focused sound that is his own. A long-time Astro
Nautico collaborator, Loggins plays a pivotal role in
electronic music scenes in Boston and New York via
his JASS imprint. As Time Wharp he has toured Europe
and the United States with such acts as Teebs, Baths,
Sonnymoon and Low Limit.

Long-awaited debut full-length by Time Wharp, who
has previously released music with Astro Nautico and
runs his own Boston-based imprint, JASS Records

Hunee – Hunch Music

Image: 1597154 Hunee presents his debut album “Hunch Music” this Spring. “Hunch Music” is the striking assembly of the artist’s versatile inspirations and productional talent. It is a rich musical journey that latches onto you and doesn’t let go easily.
Hun Choi, better known as Hunee, is a Korean Berliner who moved to Amsterdam over a year ago. In Berlin he used to work in a record store where he could extend his unquenchable enthusiasm for music. The connection with Rush Hour was a natural continuation of his musical path.

Firstly the DJ emerged, secondly the producer. As a DJ, Hunee manifested himself as a fine connoisseur of classic and contemporary music. Always smiling, he is determined to share every fine record he finds with the world. Over the past few years, Hunee the producer has put out some highly acclaimed EPs, but only a handful. The producer went quiet for a moment, but “Hunch Music” proves Hunee’s unstoppable character.

“Hunch Music” is rather special: it is a cinematic journey from the beginning to the end, with scenes we haven’t encountered before. It starts with “Woods” as the perfect introduction – a moody, mystic night haze that quickly changes into a warm and soothing whole. Following with “Crossroads”, the mystery transcends into something that moves us to the dance floor, and we’re not sure whether we want to keep moving or we just want to listen. “Hunch Music” has a nocturnal aura, an organic groove, and moments of glorious acid. It takes us up and throws us down, gently, while subjecting us to many cinematic and musical elements.

For an artist who is also an avid vinyl collector, it might be difficult to ensure that his numerous inspirations do not distract from his artistic signature. Hunee’s production work is as colorful as his character, displaying a broad spectrum of his inspirations that manifest themselves in a surprising and seductive artistic entity.
