Brother Resistance – Rapso Takeover
Friday, June 19th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Brother Resistance – Rapso Takeover

Image: 1597793 Originally released in 1986, Brother Resistance’s Rapso Take Over blends calypso, reggae, disco, funk and poetry to create the artist’s signature Rapso sound.
A progressive form of poetry from Trinidad and Tobago, Rapso emerged as a means by which to articulate the daily suffering symptomatic of the social unrest afflicting the nation throughout the 1970s and 80s. Brother Resistance played a significant role in the Rapso movement, deploying his music to spread messages of hope and liberation. The authorities took Brother Resistance’s rising status seriously, destroying what they could of his studios and in the process leaving only a small amount of his music in circulation.

Now for the first time we can hear Brother Resistance’s finest work remastered and repressed. The music and the message live on through Rapso Take Over’s stripped back rhythms infused with steel and strings, all carried by the voice of resistance.

Moodymann – DJ-Kicks
Friday, January 15th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Moodymann – DJ-Kicks

Image: 1601685 Doesn’t get bigger than this as the one and only Moodyman is on the decks for the first DJ-Kicks of the year.

Following a year that saw the 50th entry in the long-running series released to wide acclaim, DJ-Kicks returns in 2016 another landmark edition. Iconic Detroit DJ and producer Moodymann is at the helm for his first ever multi-artist DJ mix compilation. Born Kenny Dixon Jr., Moodymann is a one-of-a-kind electronic music icon, hailing from, and wholly synonymous with the Motor City. He is an outspoken, impossibly charismatic artist who has been putting a distinctive and soulful stamp on house and techno since the early 90s. Melting together jazz, funk, soul, blues and rock in captivating ways, he is responsible for some of electronic music’s most definitive tracks, EPs and LPs on labels like Planet E, Peacefrog and his own KDJ and Mahogani Music imprints. As able to
serve up the sweetest and most sensual sounds as he is the darkest and most depraved grooves, his own unique voice and stream of conscious musings infuse expertly sought-out samples for music that is decisively alive and authentic.
Across 75 minutes and 30 tracks, Moodymann does not disappoint: despite being a notorious vinyl fetishist, Dixon’s aim is to present music of quality, not to one-up fellow collectors. Rather than serving up ridiculously rare or hard-to-find records, he instead focuses on creating a libidinous, blues-drenched mood that takes in heart-breaking soul, gorgeous hip-hop and love-fuelled house. In addition to cuts from his own creative circle, the mix features 11 exclusive Moodymann edits. Like everything Kenny Dixon Jr. touches, DJ-Kicks showcases the taste, skill, and soul of a dance music original.

Various – Purple Snow: Forecasting The Minneapolis
Thursday, December 26th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Purple Snow: Forecasting The Minneapolis

Image: 1584639 In the late 1970s, a peculiar sound began bubbling up from the land of 10,000 lakes. Buried beneath 50 solid inches of annual snow, Minneapolis made a Sound quite different than what the pop world foresaw. It issued forth as a slick, black, technologically advanced fusion, poised to storm the charts. Never known for sizable African-American populations, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in fact harbored a tight-knit community of musicians working feverishly through the late ’70s and early ’80s toward a radical manipulation of American dance music, coating futuristic funk with the glamorous sheen of guitar rock. Synthetic ebony and ivory met electricity, with sexed-up results sent shockingly across the pop heavens like violet lightning.

On 4 LPs or 2 CDs, Purple Snow: Forecasting the Minneapolis Sound—the Numero Group’s breathlessly anticipated 50th mainline release—chronicles the scene’s first steps, false starts, and follow-throughs, sourcing the life’s work of known quantities and shadowy figures alike. In the beginning, there was Purple Haze, whose billing as Haze on two obscure albums left the color purple to their city’s incipient sound. Pepé Willie’s 94 East project gave local prodigy Prince Rogers Nelson an early chance to row along with the crew. From there, the story courses past Jimmy Jam Harris’ extroverted Philly throwback Mind & Matter collective, to Terry Lewis and Flyte Tyme, flamboyant precursor to Morris Day’s The Time. Unearthing basement demos by Prince’s childhood sidekick/departed bassist André Cymone, plus deep cuts from legend-about-town Alexander O’Neal, Numero 050 gathers relentlessly as the sprawling, nonfiction prequel to Purple Rain’s cultural takeover.

Surpassing 30,000 words, our hardbound, full-color book companion to Purple Snow: Forecasting the Minneapolis Sound is a gorgeous, exhaustively detailed, and insight-rich guided tour across two hours of music and adecade of North Star history. Inside, dozens of supporting characters and combos seed clouds for the meteoric rise of a genre formerly known mostly as Prince’s—not to mention unheard product from his top collaborators and fiercest competitors. In game-changing sound and image-rich splendor, Purple Snow: Forecasting the Minneapolis Sound clears a crowded stage, ushering in unsung Twin Cities future-funk talent, to bask for a spotlit moment, out of that persistent violet shadow, and to shine.

Various – New Blood 013 LP

Image: 1580279 Continuing the ever-successful New Blood series into the year 2013 and beyond is the next instalment of fresh cuts from a whole new generation of Med School undergraduates. Featuring the undiscovered stars of the future, ‘New Blood 013’ brings together a collection of sounds from the underground and presents them as a compilation album that will impress D&B specialists from across the board.

‘New Blood 013’ boasts a diverse tracklist and although it is predominantly D&B, there are some half-time tracks, dubstep, downtempo and experimental rhythms which makes for an expansive and genre-crossing listen. From the blissed out soundscape and whispering in Etherwood’s “Unfolding” through the glitchy experimentalism of Bakai’s “Kaikaki” and the moody murkiness of Minor Rain’s “Plasticity” to the incredible textures of Joe Ford’s “Frozen Sound”, there is plenty to discover across the 14-track album.

Featuring some more familiar names such as New Blood 011’s Anile, Blood Pressure’s TwoThirds and Barefoot, tech-heads Optiv & CZA, the elusive Mr Sizef from St Petersburg, the ever-promising Etherwood and Joe Ford, there are, as always with a ‘New Blood’ album, a host of lesser known artists who are names to watch for the future. Expect the unexpected and you might be prepared for ‘New Blood 013’ and its epic array of new talent.

The launch party for ‘New Blood 013’ will take place at Fabric, London on Friday 22nd March where you can catch: London Elektricity (Med School Set), Joe Syntax, Lung, Etherwood, Joe Ford + MCs Ruthless, Juma Phist.

Press / Promotion: Comprehensive campaign in-house serving all UK music and dance titles as well as national, regional and student press – Mixmag, DJ, Trap, Notion, Music Week, Future Music, Time Out, Metro (London + regional

Back in 1996 (while High Contrast, Logistics and Cyantific were all still in short trousers) two chaps from North West London were busy setting up their own little label as an outlet for their left of centre drum and bass creations. Who would have thought that 10 years and 100 releases later the label would have become the multi-national-corporate-superpower that is Hospital Records?!

To celebrate 10 years of Hospital the label put together the fattest primary care package to give both hardcore fans and recent NHS converts the chance to revel in some of the finest moments in the label’s past, present and future …
