Mr.Thing – Presents Strange Breaks & Mr.Thing Vol.2
Friday, April 15th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Mr.Thing – Presents Strange Breaks & Mr.Thing Vol.2

Image: 1549644 The sound of the sixties and seventies has never been so sought after as at the present moment. You could even argue that modern music just isn’t good enough. As evidence consider this: contemporary producers and artists are often looking back to get inspired – insert staggering number of examples – so you can safely say that even in this digital age the beating heart of modern R&B and hip-hop is still vintage soul, funk and jazz.

This is why BBE Records have teamed up with DJ/Producer Mr Thing, to dig deep into his extensive collection to compile a series of 5 long players of rare and sought after breaks. This series reflects brilliantly on his dedication to digging for those untouched and unrivalled samples and breaks as you hear him use in his DJ sets. As a DJ, Mr Thing never fails to engage the crowd with his winning combination of hip hop and funk breaks spiced up with his legendary mixing and scratching skills.

Volume II as you guess is the 2nd installment in the five part “Strange Breaks & Things” series contains superb songs, some you’ve probably never heard of, some which may make you go: “I recognize this sample!”… because it was once used as the backdrop for a classic Hip Hop track. If you liked the legendary “Strange Games” compilation series on BBE compiled by the likes of Kenny Dope & DJ Spinna, you’ll love “Strange Breaks & Things”. Available from 27.05.2016

Fred Wesley & The New J.B.’s – Breakin’ Bread
Saturday, November 7th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Fred Wesley & The New J.B.’s – Breakin’ Bread

Image: 1600774 So many times we refuse to go back and break bread with our parents, relatives and old friends… Times are tough, the
economy is rough, everybody’s tryin’ to make a dollar. Sometimes you get away from yourself. Won’t you go back and
break bread, while we still have some to break?
So implored James Brown, Fred Wesley and even album engineer Bob Both, on the back cover liners of the 1974 soul
classic Breakin’ Bread. Times were indeed tough for everyday folks in the waning days of the Nixon era. Escape-ism was
needed. Humanity sometimes seemed to be in short supply.
But James Brown and his assembled People Records roster were always there to take soul music fans away from their
everyday trials and tribulations, even while occasionally funking up negative situations (for instance, “Rockin’ Funky
Watergate,” one of the centerpieces of this album). The heavy grooves laid down by trombonist and bandleader Fred
Wesley, saxophonist and arranger St. Clair Pinckney and Fred’s assembled “New J.B.’s” were, almost literally, comfort for
the ears.
1974 saw a vortex of superfunk coming out of James Brown’s People Records stable, and this platter wasn’t even the only
J.B.’s album that year (see also: Damn Right, I Am Somebody, also reissued by Get On Down). But it is one that added to
the powerful musical and social legacy of that crew. It’s an air-tight, eight course meal, with most platters clocking in at
four delicious minutes each.
“Breakin’ Bread” is a truly memorable funk stew, with warm, call-and-response vocals, complicated-but-laidback soul,
and an important message – alluded to in the back cover plea. “I Wanna Get Down,” “Rice ‘N’ Ribs” and “Funky Music Is
My Style” all feature intricate, infectious grooves. In fact, there isn’t much time to catch your breath on Breakin’ Bread,
and that’s a beautiful thing.
Reissued on LP with a sumptuous, five-color, 22” x 22” poster of the cover art, all wrapped in a Stoughton Tip-On jacket
and thick polybag, there is never a bad time to revisit this classic (maybe replacing your worn-out original copy). Or, just
as importantly, let it blow your mind for the first time.

COMES BUNDLED WITH A 5-COLOR, 22”x 22” POSTER OF THE COVER ART!

Black Moon – Enta Da Stage (2017 Remaster)
Thursday, October 5th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Black Moon – Enta Da Stage (2017 Remaster)

Image: 1615537 Composed of members Buckshot, 5ft, and DJ Evil Dee, Black Moon simultaneously kicked off and defned the rap renaissance of New York with the release of Enta Da Stage in 1993. Whereas plenty of earlier groups had spit rage-flled rhymes to tear down the world’s unjust establishments, no one had evoked brooding pathos or introspective anger quite like Black Moon. Underground hip-hop might have been dominated by the sunny sound of G-Funk when Enta Da Stage dropped, but from then on the scene turned to the dark side. Black Moon was rising. Earlier this year, Fat Beats Records presented the defnitive Enta Da Stage box set, which was reissued for the frst time across three formats (6xLP, 3xCD and 3xCassette). This album is the complete encapsulation of an era for anyone seeking to understand the origin and the essence of New York’s Golden Age.The box set included vocals, instrumentals and remixes plus extensive liner notes by David Ma (Pitchfork, Wax Poetics) with rare and unreleased visual ephemera in an 18 page booklet. The story of Black Moon, alongside their peers Biggie, Big L, Nas, Kool G Rap, and Wu Tang, reminds us that the bleakest times produce the most profound agents of cultural change. And as we stand at the precipice of a new age of anxiety, Enta Da Stage has never been more relevant… or more necessary.
Although Black Moon would go on to release three more albums – and its members would go on to greatness with Da Beatminerz, Boot Camp Klik, and various solo projects – Enta Da Stage remains the perfect distillation of tight lyrical menace, rowdy crew hooks, stripped down breaks, and deep basslines on all of its fourteen tracks. Although Enta Da Stage might stand in the shadow of East Coast albums such as Enter the WuTang (36 Chambers), Illmatic, Liquid Swords, Ready to Die, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, and The Infamous, history will remember that Enta Da Stage
preceded those releases. To understand Enta Da Stage is to understand the origin and the spirit of New York hip-hop once and for all.

MC’s Buckshot and 5 Ft. shine on the mic, exuding supreme confdence through their brash delivery and charisma, while on the musical side, DJ Evil Dee and Mr. Walt make their mark with their distinctively jazzy yet grimy lo-f production as Da Beatminerz

Pure Pleasure – Dancin’ Prancin’ / By My Side
Friday, September 8th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Pure Pleasure – Dancin’ Prancin’ / By My Side

Image: 1611861 The Soul7 label is back with bang with a double sided treasure from the early ’80s by a little known Detroit band called Pure Pleasure. DJs and dancers alike will love this full-sounding remastered 7″ repress! It’s hard to decide which of the two sides is better, the outstanding, uplifting “By My Side” is considered ‘the track’ – but don’t dismiss the flip! Co-written and sung by Barbara Love, ‘By My Side’ is a super charged mid-tempo vocal dancefloor fave that’s a blinder from the start with driven, tight horn and bass stabs swinging into a stunning two step soul track with the perfect beat. It,’s as wonderful on first hearing today as it was back in 1981. ‘I remember heading down to Indianapolis to cut this record. We had a lot of fun’ Barbara told us recently, ‘I don’t know why we went all the way down there, it was all over in a day’.

On the flip “Dancin & Prancin”, a true dancer from the off, disco jazz funk bass groove and a top class vocal from Tony D. Perfect sounding for today’s modern soul clubs – it even includes a nice b-boy disco drum break!

The band members all went to the same school in Detroit back in the late ’60s. Upon leaving school the boys started a band called The Soulful Sonics in the early ’70s. Barbara used to gig with them on occasion but nothing was ever recorded. The band changed their name to Pure Pleasure in the mid ’70s and in 1979 they asked Barbara to join. Around June 1980 ‘By My Side’ had been written and the group were finally readly to release a 45 on their own label. QC Records was born – it stood for “Quick Cash”!

Unfortunately, like many bands after their first release, tensions arose which caused a breakup. In this case it was disruption within the band due to Barbara getting the lion’s share of credit and attention. But years late Pure Pleasure is back together doing gigs and rockin’ the crowds, and this 45 lets the music live on.

Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five – The Message
Saturday, August 26th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five – The Message

Image: 1611661 In the whole history of hip-hop music, few groups can
claim to have been as influential and important as
Joseph Saddler’s group Grandmaster Flash & The
Furious Five. Many of the genre’s signature elements
and trademarks can be traced back to the supergroup
founded by the Grandmaster, their discography was
among the first to feature recordings of scratching
and turntablism, their’s was the first to feature songs
with political and social commentary, they were the
first to refer to rappers as “MC’s”, some might even
say they were the group that first coined the term
“hip-hop.”
Though Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five was
considered the number one hip-hop group on their
home turf of New York City, they only maintained a
following on a local level, performing and releasing
singles exclusively on the East Coast. It wasn’t until
the release of Sugar Hill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight”
that the group realized they could break into the
mainstream. After signing with Sugar Hill Records,
the group released their debut album The Message in
1982.
Bolstered by Flash’s deft turntablism, rappers Melle
Mel, Kidd Creole, and Keef Cowboy’s vocals, and
production which sampled everything from Chic to
the Tom Tom Club to The Jimmy Castor Bunch, The
Message was a revelation of sorts. More than simply
being a Billboard hit for the group, the album helped
cement hip-hop’s credibility with mainstream
audiences, and is considered a major achievement in
hip-hop history. The album’s title track was especially
praised, and is considered one of the greatest rap
tracks in music history.

Shina Williams & His African Percussions – Agboju Logun

Strut present a brand new 12” reissue of Shina Williams’ monster Nigerian disco anthem ‘Agboju Logun’, pairing the rare original album version (released on Phonodisk Nigeria) with the more sparse 12” remix which surfaced later internationally on Earthworks.
Back in 1979 when Shina Williams’ ‘Agboju Logun’ frst appeared on his ‘African Dances’ LP, Williams knew well that the track was breaking new ground. “I want to show the whole wide world that Africa is alive with modern musicians to reckon with anywhere,” he stated. Now an accepted Afro disco classic of its time, ‘Agboju Logun’ did indeed bring together the cream of Nigeria’s players as a oneoff supergroup in one inspired session. As a long-standing and well respected highlife musician and vocalist, Williams called in the ‘A’ list: Tunde Martins from Afro Collective played bass guitar, the brilliant Biddy Wright (player on albums by Lijadu Sisters, Blo and many more) contributed the famous synth lines and handled production, Fred Fisher was on trombone and Saliu Alabi played talking drum.
Enjoying limited success upon its release in Nigeria, ‘African Dances’ nevertheless gained some international attention when Earthworks’ Jumbo Van Renan licensed two tracks from it for an international 12” single release in 1984, remixing ‘Agboju Logun’ in a more stripped back mix for dancefloors. However, it was the period following Fela Kuti’s death in the late ‘90s that truly ignited interest in archive African grooves for a new
internet generation. Strut’s frst ‘Nigeria 70’ compilation featured the track in 2000 and it has been a staple in DJs’ crates ever since. ‘Abboju Logun’ is released in a picture jacket 12” featuring original artwork and all musicians’ credits and is fully remastered by The Carvery.

Various – New Orleans Funk Vol.4
Wednesday, October 19th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – New Orleans Funk Vol.4

Image: 1607071 Soul Jazz Records’ latest crate-digging excursion into the Crescent City vaults delves deep into the roots and history of the voodoo world of New Orleans Funk and as ever features a stellar selection of killer rare funk and soul!

The album is jam-packed with serious break-heavy, heavyweight funk tunes from classic New Orleans artists including Eddie Bo, Betty Harris, Dave Bartholomew, Johnny Adams and Eldridge Holmes (with the ever-present Allen Toussaint and The Meters as always behind the scenes). There is also a host of rare cuts from a number of lesser-known second line New Orleans artists, whose fame rarely reached past the walls of the city, including Gus ‘The Groove’ Lewis, James K-Nine, Norma Jean, Bob French, Chuck Colbert, Zilla Mayes and Joe Haywood.

In the 1960s the syncopated beat of New Orleans Funk developed out of a gumbo mix of New Orleans local flavours – rhythm and blues, Mardi Gras Indians, the street percussion Second Line of the Jazz Funeral and Marching bands, Caribbean rhumba and mambo rhythms – all of which are in full effect. Even Zydeco, the rhythm and blues offspring of Louisiana Cajun music, had the funk as the King of Zydeco, Clifton Chenier, shows us here.

New Orleans music and Voodoo both have their roots in the African-American free black and slave gatherings held at Congo Square from the 18th century onwards. Here Voodoo king Doctor John (the original one!) and Voodoo queen Marie Levaux held court over their followers, and here also could be heard the first sounds of New Orleans jazz music. Soul Jazz Records’ latest album describes how these two cultural forms are inextricably inter-related.

The album traces the path of funk from the very first glimpses of the style – Dave Bartholomew’s super-tight ‘The Monkey’ (recorded in 1957) and James Waynes’ junkie jailbird anthem ‘Junco Partner’ (1951, later covered by Dr John, Professor Longhair, James Booker, and The Clash) through to the 1970s heavyweight boogie funk of Chocolate Milk’s rare groove classic Action Speak Louder Than Words and The Baron’s ‘Making It Better’.

Also featured is a selection of hard-core classic funk productions from the legendary Eddie Bo (James K-Nine, David Robinson) and the genius of Allen Toussaint (Eldridge Holmes, Gus ‘The Groove’ Lewis, Lou Johnson). There also a number of super-rare independent New Orleans’ one-off 45 single funk productions from the likes of Chick Colbert and Bob French. And lastly, New Orleans Funk female vocalists are in full effect with tracks by Betty Harris (whose ‘Lost Queen of New Orleans Soul’ has just come out on Soul Jazz Records), Zilla Mayes and Norma Jean.

This album is released as a heavyweight double gatefold vinyl (+ download code), CD pack and digital album, and comes with extensive sleeve-notes and exclusive photography.

Strut present the definitive collection of singles released by Sun Ra across his illustrious career, spanning 1952 to 1991. Released prolifically during the 1950s and more sporadically thereafter, primarily on the Saturn label, the 45s offer one-off meteorites from Ra’s prolific cosmic journey, tracing the development of his forwardthinking “Space-Bop” and his unique take on jazz and blues traditions. The collection is hugely varied, ranging from Ra’s spoken word recitations and his early work with Chicago vocal groups to the different phases of his Arkestra, small group and duet recordings. The singles are also unpredictable vehicles for Ra’s music, combining different tracks from different sessions and occasionally making available music which was recorded many years beforehand.
As with his LPs, most 45s were only pressed in small runs and have since become extremely rare and sought after. Only a small handful of copies of ‘Love In Outer Space’ b/w ‘Mayan Temple’ and ‘The Blue One’ b/w ‘Orbitration In Blue’ have ever been seen, some have only been discovered in physical form in recent years, some were planned and pencilled but allegedly never made it to vinyl (including ‘Saturn’ and ‘Velvet’ from the Jazz In Silhouette LP) and some appeared as limited one-off magazine singles and posthumous releases, including ‘Hell #1’ aka ‘Out There A Minute’.
The set is the most comprehensive collection of Ra’s singles to date. Sleeve note writers Francis Gooding and Paul Griffiths brilliantly illustrate the role of the single within Ra’s career and break down each release with detailed track by track notes. Working with Sun Ra LLC and Sun Ra archivist Michael D. Anderson, Strut has also assembled the best possible master sources for each track.
‘Singles’ will be released on CD and LP formats across two release dates. Both formats feature fully remastered tracks, rare photos, original 45 artwork, Francis Gooding’s extensive sleeve notes, an interview with Saturn Records founder Alton Abraham by John Corbett and detailed track by track and session notes by Paul Griffiths.

– first definitive collection of Sun Ra singles, including all Saturn releases, planned singles, posthumous releases and magazine giveaways
– Remastered by Technologyworks including exclusive tape transfers from the Sun Ra archive

release. Presented in their original label artwork
– All formats include rare photos and sleeve notes by Francis Gooding. Extensive track by track notes and session details by paul Griffiths

Josh “DJ Shadow” Davis had already been experimenting with making beats and breaks on a four-track recorder while he was in high school in the Nor-Cal college town of Davis, but it was during university that he co-founded his own Solesides label as an outlet for his original tracks. Hooking up with Davis’ few b-boys […]

Arthur Verocai – Arthur Verocai

Image: 1604396 “I could listen to the album everyday for the rest of my life” – Madlib.

For a very long time, we have been trying to re-issue this record, a true and complete album masterpiece in every sense of the word, considered by many people to be one of the greatest ever made, regardless of genre.

Recorded at Studio Somil, Rio De Janeiro in 1972, the album was produced, arranged, directed by the self-taught, Arthur Verocai. Previously he had worked on many records in various capacities, with artists including Jorge Ben, Ivan Lins and Celia, this album gave him the chance to do his thing in it’s
most pure form.

The 29 minute masterpiece, perfect in it’s arrangement and fusion of sonics, epitomises the sound of Brazil at the time, strings, guitars, pianos, break beats, basslines, synthesizers, vocals from the wonderful Célia and percussion from Pedro Santos. Bossa nova, samba, jazz, MPB, psychedelics and funk sit side by side effortlessly.

The album transcends the genre of Brazilian music, and infact all genres. Highlighted in part by the number of artists that have sampled from it, MF Doom, Ludacris & Common, Little Brother, Jneiro Jarel aka Dr Who Dat?, Dibiase and Action Bronson amongst others.

The original Continental versions of the album now fetch around $2000. Our definitive re-issue is an exact replica of the gatefold original LP and the source master is taken from the Continental tapes, re-mastered in 2012 under Arthur’s supervision.

MF DOOM – Special Blends Vol.1&2

Image: 1604329 From his early days in 90s collective KMD to his reinvention as
a masked supervillain leading the indie hip-hop revolution, MF
DOOM has consistently pushed the boundaries of hip-hop in new
and unexpected directions. While DOOM’s lyrical genius is welldocumented, he has quietly become an important figure behind the
boards as well. DOOM has always produced his own music, and in
the early 2000s he released the acclaimed ten-part Special Herbs
instrumental series, introducing the world to the dusty, lo-fi loops that
define his production aesthetic.
In the years since, DOOM has supplied soundscapes for Ghostface
Killah’s classic Fishscale album, produced an entire album for Masta
Ace, and witnessed a new generation of emcees (including Joey
Bada$$, Capital STEEZ, and Bishop Nehru) using Special Herbs
beats on their breakthrough mixtapes. Now, the villain is putting
the spotlight back on his production with the official vinyl release
of Special Blends, Vol. 1 & 2. Originally self-released in extremely
limited quantities back in 2004, Special Blends Vol. 1 & 2 pairs
vintage DOOM-produced Special Herbs instrumentals with classic
hip-hop and R&B vocals. Mixed by DOOM himself, this collection
incorporates vocals from a wide range of iconic records. Special
Blends Vol. 1 & 2 is available in standard 2XLP vinyl format, as well
as a deluxe version inside a custom-printed burlap bag. Available from 17.06.2016

Kon & Amir – Off Track – Volume One: The Bronx
Friday, March 18th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Kon & Amir – Off Track – Volume One: The Bronx

Image: 503360 BBEYou can hear it in the songs of Amerie, Amy Winehouse, Kanye West, Mark Ronson and Timbaland. Even in this digital age, the beating heart of modern R&B and hip-hop is still vintage soul, funk and jazz. Whether it’s Winehouse sampling Motown’s finest or Timbaland hijacking Nina Simone’s “Sinnerman”, the sound of the sixties and seventies has never been so sought after.

Modern producers, searching for music of integrity, continue to scour dusty racks of records for inspiration. What Kon and Amir have done is make their lives easier. The first collection in the five part “Off Track” series, contains 28 superb songs that you’ve probably never heard of. From a disco tribute to Muhammad Ali to a slice of soulful South African jazz, this is music for the connoisseur. Just don’t be surprised when you hear it being sampled on the next big R&B anthem…

Like legendary treasure-hunters, Kon and Amir have spent the past twenty-five years excavating record bins finding gems to pierce ears with. Fortunately, everyone gets to share in the riches of their labor with the release of their latest offering The “Off Track” Series, Long forgotten musicians are now getting their proper dues and appreciative audiences are being turned on to some amazing music.

The Off Track series builds on the successes of their highly respected “On Track” series. Unlike the “On Track” series, which featured short snippets of samples and breaks, the Off Track double disc series features full versions of some the best and rarest audible gems in their entirety.

Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling) – Room To Breathe: The Free LP (LP+MP3)
Friday, January 15th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Andy Cooper (Ugly Duckling) – Room To Breathe: The Free LP (LP+MP3)

Enjoy the ride!

Being a member of a group like Ugly Duckling is an honor and privilege but stepping out on my own has been really exciting because of the freedom to explore and push the limits of my ability“.
Ob schweißtreibende Battle-Raps wie „Bring It To Me“, super groovige lockere Rhymes wie im gleichnamigen Track „Room To Breathe“ oder half-tempo-bad-ass-rap-Nummern wie „Number One“ – Cooper schafft es, das Level durchgängig ganz weit oben zu halten und fährt stärkstes Geschütz für alle Classic-Rap-Fans auf. Enjoy the ride!

Tracklist (LP enthält diverse Interludes):
1. Bring It To Me  // 2. Number One  // 3. Do The Charlie Brown  // 4. Room To Breathe
5. Chasing The Funk  // 6. Unlikely Assassin  // 7. Blind Faith  // 8. Thanks And Goodnight   // 9. Ashes To Ashes  // 10. Bring It To Me (Allergies Remix) Available from 26.02.2016
