“Countdown to … Soul” ist ein wie immer äußerst empfehlenswerter Ausflug in die Musikgeschichte. Culture – Two Sevens Clash (2CD/40th Anniversary Edition)
Friday, April 14th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Culture – Two Sevens Clash (2CD/40th Anniversary Edition)

“Culture has made his mark. It was a good mark, a firm mark. When people say reggae music, they will always think of Culture. Culture’s musical philosophy will live on” – Winston Rodney / Burning Spear
“This album ranks as one of the greatest reggae albums ever recorded. It still sounds as fresh today as it did when I first heard it” – Mick Hucknall / Simply Red Available from 26.05.2017

John Webber & Robbie Banks – Von Der Street In Die Suite (Ltd. Deluxe Box)

Image: 1605513 Soundway is proud to present ‘Kenya Special : Volume Two’. This time the team of compilers have gone to even greater lengths to share a small part of what is slowly being accepted as an essential element of East Africa’s cultural heritage: the history of recorded popular music.

The featured songs on Kenya Special : Volume Two bend the rules, break away from existing genres and sometimes experiment with foreign music trends. The approach to musical rediscovery behind Kenya Special : Volume Two has its origins in a youthful movement of vinyl collecting as well as, to some extent, club culture.

‘Kenya Special’ was one of Soundway Records’ most popular releases and is considered a milestone in East African compilations. Now comes the latest release from Soundway’s acclaimed African ‘Special’ compilation series, featuring 20 extremely rare recordings from East Africa, an area barely touched by modern compilations.

The release comes with detailed liner notes, original artwork and photography.

DJ Spinna presents – The Wonder of Stevie Vol. 3
Friday, June 17th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on DJ Spinna presents – The Wonder of Stevie Vol. 3

Image: 1604220 The list of musical highlights for Vincent Williams
aka DJ Spinna are too numerous to list, from his
seminal hip hop duo Jigmastas and DJ sets across
the globe, to his iconic solo productions and
remixes. But if you ask him, it’s the relationship
he’s forged with personal hero Stevie Wonder
that Spinna considers to be his single greatest
achievement.
As with most artists of a soulful persuasion,
Stevie’s music influenced Spinna from the outset,
dictating everything from his approach to writing
to his use of Fender Rhodes and Moog bass-lines
on his productions. Having gained so much from
the great man, Spinna decided to pay tribute in
the form of ‘Wonderfull’, a series of parties
celebrating the Wonder of Stevie. This is where the
story became somewhat surreal for Spinna,
suddenly finding himself joined onstage in
Washington D.C. by none other than Stevie
himself, a spine-tingling moment even when
viewed on YouTube.
An extension of the Wonderfull parties, this album
represents a celebration of the life, music and
cultural impact of Stevie Wonder. Few compilers
can boast Spinna’s understanding of Stevie’s back
catalogue, not to mention the large number of
songs he’s written for other artists over the years.
Featuring stunning cover versions you may well
have never heard before alongside songs many of
us had no idea he’d written, Spinna’s vast
knowledge of and boundless enthusiasm for
Stevie’s music shines with every selection. As both
a super-fan and a close friend, surely there is
nobody better placed to compile this wonderful
document of Stevie Wonder’s music, inspiration
and influence.
Key Selling Points:
– The album focuses on cover versions, compositions and
collaborations by Stevie Wonder, one of the most critically
and commercially successful musical performers &
songwriter of the late 20th century.
– DJ Spinna as a friend of Stevie & as a fan, continues to
remind us of his legacy via his sell out ‘Wonderfull’ shows
(sometimes attended by Stevie Wonder :
https://youtu.be/C_0gGtZr7zo
– This Album will be supported by full press, radio & online
campaign in all key territories
– There will be a launch party in Brixton on 10th July and a
Stevie Wonder live gig in Hyde Park (65000 people
attending!) on the same day

Gerra & Stone – DNT U / Chicago
Thursday, November 12th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Gerra & Stone – DNT U / Chicago

Image: 1600841 Over the past year, Gerra & Stone have become one of the most exciting duos to take the genre’s forefront. Featuring across Ram and Program’s discography, they’re creating their own space, one held firmly by tight production standards and a refreshing musicality, seldom seen in newly emerging talent.

The single appeals to a diverse group of music listeners. Whether across the subs of London’s haunts, or the headphones of any technical music listener, these next two sonic cuts pedestal not only their understanding of a diverse sound design, but also their ability to conquer it.

‘Dnt U’ is a riddim which cuts and swerves between cascading breaks and instantly recognisable drum patterns. The junglist influences are given a stockiness by an LFO bassline and distortion, falling between amen and quaking sub. It shows a clear persona etched out by the two producers, one which has made them instantly recognisable from the outset.

The next up, ‘Chicago’ also brings an old school vibe whilst utilising more contemporary techniques. Flipping beat patterns draw you in, whilst metallic percussion drives you forward at an incredible speed. Switching up, it then drags you down a corridor of fluctuating bass notes and snapping hi-hats.

Adding a second instalment to an already impressive entree, this next output from the outfit prove their path is about to take another ascent. And with exciting new talent to come from the imprint… Once again, it’s time to get with the Program!

DC Breaks – If This Is Love
Wednesday, July 15th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on DC Breaks – If This Is Love

Image: 1598342 One sided 12″. Building momentum at a dizzying speed, DC Breaks’ debut LP is beginning to seep into every corner of music’s landscape. After welcoming 2015 with resounding first single ‘Faithless’, premiered by Radio1’s dance champion Annie Mac, they reiterated to the underground that they were back after finely tuning their creative prowess and opening up to an even more diverse spectrum of sound.

Presenting a multi-dimensional approach to music-making, summer anthem ‘If this is Love’ demonstrates DC Breaks’ widespread appeal. Keeping the hard-lined dynamics which made them so digestible to a drum & bass fan base, whilst creating dancefloor cross-over tracks like ‘Faithless’, this next record is the perfect follow up to solidify their title as production heavyweights.

Incorporating live percussion whilst pedestalling that driving bassline that makes DC Breaks so destructive in clubs across the globe, the guitar stroked follow up is both beautifully composed but doesn’t lack the flare which makes them so recognisable. It’s the perfect starter to the year’s fairer season, a track to dominate the sunlit airwaves as well as sets at festivals worldwide. Also having just delivered a monumental remix on both RAM Records and dancefloor pioneer Spinnin’ Records, EelkeKleijin’s mistakes was given an up-tempo revamp which has further pushed DC Breaks into the agenda’s fore front.

And their most recent announcement, which is a slot at London’s biggest drum & bass event to date, the RAM Records stage at the iconic SW4 festival will see the duo bring their debut album to the decks. On top of headline slots at some of Europe’s biggest festivals, including Dour, with more dates exciting dates soon to be announced, all paths this year lead to DC Breaks.

Debut album due for release towards the end of this year.

June Miller – Chain of Strength / Last Night On Earth
Thursday, June 4th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on June Miller – Chain of Strength / Last Night On Earth

Image: 1597612 Sprinting at an incredible speed, June Miller are inevitably coming closer to their debut album. With seven more days until this conundrum of genre cross-pollination and production ingenuity is unleashed, here’s a small appetiser to prepare yourself for an eclipse, caused by June Miller’s vast capabilities. ‘Chain of Strength’ is an introduction which hits you with wave after wave of seismic bass-driven impact. Lead unsuspectingly from a lulling piano intro, straight through a chasm of smashing, hardcore-reminiscent percussion and driving drums, it proves the duo’s endless versatility. Alongside a building break that literally pulses with anticipation, that first drop leaves you free-falling into an explosion of tightly intricate composition. A complete sensory overload, it sets a standard matched by their new material. Then comes ‘Last Night on Earth’, creepy and gradually building tension with an instantly-recognisable sample of cinematic proportions. Both tracks are equally unstoppable, not leaving you time to breathe and carrying across an ocean of sound which is relentless. Amongst the ghost-like, clashing swords and almost untenable intensity, you’re pulled through loops of incessant hi-hats, amongst palpitation-inducing drum patterns.

A single that embodies the peak of any weekend set, here’s the marker for June Miller’s meteoric rise. After merging some of the darkest European styles, as well as smashing genre prototypes and incorporating drum & bass’ core production, the duo are switching up the game onto its next level.

Potatohead People – Big Luxury
Friday, April 10th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Potatohead People – Big Luxury

Image: 1595339 Working on opposite sides of the landmass we call Canada, Vancouver/Montreal duo Potatohead People (producers Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical) have been making waves for quite some time with their signature jazzy boom-bap meets boogie inside the bassbin vibes. Called a “formidable tandem” by OkayPlayer, their sounds have been championed early on by the likes of Kaytranada, Soulection, Nightmares on Wax, Pomo, Exmag, Big Boi, and Phife Dawg. After a few early releases on Vancouver based netlabel Jellyfish Recordings, Brooklyn’s Bastard Jazz reissued their 2012 landmark Kosmichemusik EP and pressed a 7″ released on Valentine’s Day 2013. The association landed their song “Back To My Sh*t” (featuring Frank Nitty of Frank’n’Dank) on a Powerade produced LeBron James documentary and Nick and Astro began working on a debut LP for Bastard Jazz, presented here.

Big Luxury draws from influences disparate as classic jazz, prog rock, disco 90’s hop, DJ Shadow-Era downtempo beats, alongside modern influences like the Brainfeeder crew and new electronic sounds coming out of Nick Wisdom’s adopted hometown of Montreal. What’s resulted is a finely honed, extra buttery album that effortly glides between tempos, but never loses the mood. The album also features a whole host of guest vocalists – J Dilla’s younger brother Illa J, legendary Canadian MC Moka Only, New Zealand’s Sorceress, and Amalia all provide contributions to the sounds within. Big Luxury is a velvety ride through vibes and a magnificent debut for these talented young Canadians.

Hamilton – Feel The Fury / Track 8
Friday, March 13th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Hamilton – Feel The Fury / Track 8

Image: 1596007 Deep in solitary lockdown, Hamilton has been crafting these next cuts with the meticulous precision. These two tracks present the perfect backdrop for his comeback, presenting him as a veteran artist who effortlessly combines the famed 90s vibe with contemporary production.

And after the ongoing success of his Schema EP, as well as the huge reception to his release ‘Fire/Be There’, this is a welcome return.

With pent up aggression and pounding breaks, ‘Feel the Fury’ rolls out first ominously. Cracking high hats and quick-fire percussion adds a layering that helps carry the record’s forward motion. Alongside a bassline that coils, and then lashes out over a plunging drop, you’re thrown between the snap, crack and whip of a hugely intricate composition. Hamilton is back… And he’s here to re-educate you with his unfaltering skillset.

On the flipside, ‘Track 8’ is an innovative slice of drum & bass which is both fun and drivingly relentless. Bouncing subs, coupled by distorted synths take you through elevated note patterns of gradually building, musical imagery. It’s a steppy riddim, one which doesn’t completely crash on impact but instead is creeping in its intensity. It’s Hamilton at his most diverse, yet again proving the versatility in his craftwork.

With another stunning delivery from Hamilton, 2015 is setting a precedent. One which the producer is sure to ride out into the future.

Calyx & Teebee – A Day That Never Comes / Snakes & Ladders
Wednesday, February 18th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Calyx & Teebee – A Day That Never Comes / Snakes & Ladders

Image: 1595455 After a hiatus which has left many fans sitting on the edge of their subs, Calyx &Teebee are making a dramatic return. And with this record in tow, the scene is about to bow down yet again to two of their most skilled sonic crafters.

With the huge success of their All or Nothing LP laying just over the horizon, Calyx &Teebee are about to take the title place yet again and with the full throttle forces of pounding basslines and meticulously constructed mechanics. But what else could you expect from two revered veterans of the genre, whose joint muscle has telescoped the competition in comparison.

However, it’s not just their duteous workmanship and full-throttle drive that makes their music so undeniably huge. In tracks like ‘A Day That Never Comes’ Larry Con’s vocals lead you by the hand into all-out anarchy. Revving between each break, your picked up and dropped by verbal crescendos. Angry, yet innovative and impressively intricate, Calyx &Teebee have raised expectations even higher.

And then comes ‘Snakes & Ladders’, a minefield of drum patterns and wavering note arpeggios. A steppyriddim which completely envelops the sense, each segment explodes on impact. Sliced and diced by invasive samples, you’re unable to resist, plunging you deep into the mix, the slowly building drop pushes you into a freefall of plucky subs and jittering percussion. With such an equally impactful flipside, this sets another precedent and one which the producers exceed with every release.

Burnt Friedman w/ Daniel Dodd-Ellis – Clock (12” EP)
Friday, January 16th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Burnt Friedman w/ Daniel Dodd-Ellis – Clock (12” EP)

– Groove
“… harmoniert bestens mit den ungeraden Rhythmen.” – Jazz Thing
“… grooved wie verrückt…” – HHV MAG
“… arbeitet an seinem ganz eigenen Kosmos.” – Choices
“ohlala, diese EP ist ein echter Knaller.” – Peter Weiss, Narcotic Syntax/Perlon, DJ
“Dein neues album mit Daniel Dodd-Ellis “Cease To Matter”ist wieder mal excellent!!” – Richard Dorfmeister, Tosca / DJ
“tolles Projekt, gefällt mir wirklich gut.” – Thomas Elbern, DLF
“… es passieren bei Burnt Friedman sowieso überraschende Dinge: nichts zirkuliert so lange, dass man sich von einem Loop gefangen fühlt.” – Michael Engelbrecht, DLF
“… the juxtaposition of Dodd-Ellis’ minimalist vocal contributions and Friedmann’s polyrhythmic arrangement gel perfectly, resulting in a track that is complex yet accessible, inviting even.” – Inverted Audio
“… the spoken words of Daniel Dodd-Ellis, whose contributions are less like song lyrics than like poetry, and less like poetry than word collage. The words come at unexpected intervals and in brief snippets, not always cohering in any obvious way …” – CD Hotlist Available from 24.04.2015

Frankee – All Four One EP
Wednesday, January 14th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Frankee – All Four One EP

Image: 1594725 Originating from the bass-heavy hotbed that is London town, Frankee is one of many producers that are helping to shape drum & bass for a new era. And having already expelled himself from the tide of competition clawing for the top, he’s created his own identity with nerve-twitching, eardrum encapsulating releases.

His debut ‘Turning Point’ EP saw him elevated above his predecessors, whilst monstrous sleuth ‘Gully’ became a track which resounded throughout last year, a sure-fire weapon for every dancefloor detonator. This time, however, Frankee covers every base within the space of a four-track centrepiece. From the intricately woven feat of ‘Deep Down’, back to the zigzagging bassline of ‘Drop it Low’, every avenue is crossed to display his prestige in the world of production standards.

Bursting with vocal crescendos and peppered with moody percussion, ‘Deep Down’ pedestals the different shades of drum & bass that Frankee can conjure. Caan’s voice stands at the record’s core, creating heartfelt emotion which is difficult to shake off, weaving between its structure. Reminding of earlier productions, such as the ‘Away’ remix which paved the way for 2014, it’s stocky composition ensures a hard hitting sound, whilst an arpeggio of piano notes softens the blow. A demonstrative masterpiece, it sees Frankee seep into the genre’s every corner, whilst holding his title as a compositionally aggressive heavyweight.

Next up, ‘Flim Flam’ rolls out with a foreboding intro, building mechanically until you can almost feel the pressure on your nerve endings. It begins to break at the seams, before dropping into a driving riddim that chops and changes between thrown down beats. Humanlike reverberation propels the record forward through elevating switch ups, you’re yet again left to bask in the quick-fire skill that Frankee reigns supreme over.

A fairground of musicality, ‘Drop it Low’ is the perfect reintroduction to Frankee’s ability to flip the switch and take you into a quirkier dimension of sound. The riff is undeniably catchy, grabbing you by the shoulders and submerging you in pulses of reverberating subs. Snapping, biting and with commanding vocal samples that literally throw themselves at you, Frankee is back and proving his merit.

And lastly, is ‘Snarl’. Creeping, progressively intimidating and with an impact which is often missed by other producer’s, ‘Snarl’ is imposing but without the shoutiness. Clacking high-hats and drum-patterns which lead you between breaks are diced up by unnerving atmospherics. This is Frankee at his most subtle, it proves his ability to master tracks which are diligent, dark but refined in their execution.

So, yet again this is Frankee adding another rung to the ladder of his career, although this time, he’s wrapped up every stylistic feature he’s grasped within one record. Since his debut, Frankee was hailed as one producer to watch. This release only goes to reaffirm this statement, with 2015 looking to be an equally huge year.

June Miller – Ups & Downs EP
Saturday, January 3rd, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on June Miller – Ups & Downs EP

Image: 1594478 The introductions are over, June Miller are back and there’s no apology. They’ve reappeared having been stooped in solitary confinement, presenting a handful of cuts, only to prove that this was brutally productive and they’ve been working hard to follow up their last release.

Bare-knuckled and still swinging, this EP sees June Miller entering round three and raising the bar yet another level. The precursor to their forthcoming album, from ‘The Promise Ring’ to the resounding brass of ‘Saus’, it certainly sets a precedent.

Rolling out first is title-track ‘Ups & Downs’, showing the pair’s ability to completely flip an emotive vocal sample onto its back. The way they use this sound component shows undiluted ingenuity, creating a totally different impact with every switch. It begins through a wave of static, with a break that slowly leads you up a drum-paved crescendo. Then it pounds, drops and pulls you up just as quickly, creating dynamics which merge to create an electronic masterpiece.

Coming up next is a record featuring Mefjus, a production freight-train who’s been setting the competition alight in recent months. ‘Saus’ is no different, with June Miller intertwining a tightly compact composition which smashes your synapses on impact. Rattling through on tracks of unhinged percussion, prepare yourself for a musical excursion which will take you through the darkest depths of drum and bass. But what else could you expect, when the talents of June Miller and Mefjus are so effortlessly combined?

Then we’re introduced to ‘Bad Brains’. There’s no denying why this track has been used to intro so many sets over the past year. It winds up with an intimidating compactness, before springing you into chaos. Bludgeoning beats roll with each bar set and there’s no escape from its driving onslaught. This track is instantly recognisable on first listen, alluding to June Miller’s ever-growing profile.

And lastly, we have ‘The Promise Ring’. Adding a sexier vibe to its predecessors, the producers have yet again showed there’s a hidden depth to their musicality. Snapping, tapping and with a female vocal oozing between carefully layered constructs, it’s a nod to their huge reel of ability. This last reaffirms that their debut album is sure to feature some of the most perfectly crafted, versatile music the Ram imprint has to offer.

Culture Shock – Raindrops / Troglodyte
Saturday, November 22nd, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Culture Shock – Raindrops / Troglodyte

Image: 1594000 Culture Shock has remained a withstanding name inside the realms of drum & bass. After a succession of pounding solo hits and an array of remixes which garner just as much power, it’s no surprise James Poutney is still a key player within the genre half a decade on.

And this next release from Culture Shock needs little introduction. Featuring the greatly sought after ‘Troglodyte VIP’, showcased on Andy C’s proclaimed Nightlife 6 series, there’s also a fresh new offering which boasts of his well-pedestalled credentials.

‘Raindrops’ acts as a perfect starter, reintroducing you to the bass-rooted artwork which Culture Shock manifests with absolute precision. It certainly makes a statement on impact, with warming synths that know how to take a track into different breadths of sound. Cool, refreshing yet stimulating with each electronic pulse, it’s named aptly as you’re unable to detach yourself from its strident melody. Effortlessly sophisticated, he establishes a hook ensuring ‘Raindrops’ doesn’t lack the heavier elements which underpins his composition. A signpost detailing that Culture Shock is back, this record firmly reasserts the producer as a bassline trend-setter.

Rolling out next is the reimagining of Troglodyte, one of the most rocketing dnb anthems to step out of the last five years. You already know the skull-cracking impact of its predecessor, but now it’s time for a different sequence of peddled madness. With diced up vocal snippets continuing to play an important role in its hard-lined conveyer belt of production, there’s now a fluctuation of note patterns opening up a different perspective. However, it takes the same path, leading to a drop which continues to ricochet after it’s first fired and bares it’s teeth just as aggressively.

Culture Shock nods to past and present with this next release, revamping a contemporary classic, whilst demonstrating longevity on new tracks like ‘Raindrops’. Continuing to make new ground, this end of year release signals big things to come… It’s definitely a move to watch closely!

Stealth – The Alliance EP
Wednesday, October 29th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Stealth – The Alliance EP

Image: 1593647 With each release, Stealth has slowly made his presence known within your musical subconscious. Taking hold of every synapse with drops of LFO induced devastation he’s now merged with the other figureheads of a dnb underworld to bring you his ‘Alliance EP’. And believe us when we say, this is one not to miss.

Already firmly asserting himself amongst the Program roster, his meticulously crafted cuts have helped push the imprint as an underground tastemaker. And the unstoppable partnership is back, with a gritty and technically adept EP… Proving once again they’re a force to be reckoned with.

Rolling up first alongside Stealth is Dirty Hertz, with the two producers proving their flare for contemporary drum and bass. Renowned for their intricately layered composition, ‘Revival’ is both uncompromising and delicately woven. Vigorously snapping hi-hats help to underpin an aggressive bassline, moving along a construction line gradually being built upon between pounding subs. It’s the perfect starter, helping to epitomise the sound Program represents, Aggressive musicality that boasts of ingenuity… the type that often goes unrivalled.

Then we’re introduced to Stealth & Xtrah’s ‘Everytime’. As you’d expect, this track is totally different from its predecessor, although it’s just as precisely orchestrated. Pushed forward by domineering drum loops, Stealth’s style oozes in between each bar, it’s a frequency that drops dangerously low. Wraith-like vocals dip in and out of the record’s stockier elements, with a juxtaposition which is tasteful whilst still making an impact.

Stealth and Stylus have already proved their working dynamics result in epic sound clashes and ‘Bulgan’ is no different. Building with intensity, there’s all out anarchy as it dives into a steppy riddim. This is then diced up by randomly ducking, skipping samples and winding breaks. With quickly zipping beats helping to pad out its configuration, there’s no mistaking the intricacy between every break. Stealth and Stylus smash it once again and they guarantee something new with every listen.

Lastly, Stealth and Quaed take the stand with ‘Passenger’. A demonstration of Stealth’s dynamics, the two begin with an intimidating fluctuation of note patterns overlaying a cinematic entrée. Metallic drums pound in between sections, creating a hard-driven melody which pulls you through a sonic-rollercoaster of sound. The perfect way to wrap up four sonic assaults, look no further for tracks to pull you into the season’s darker months.

A host of alliances from one of Program’s finest Stealth unleashes another defiant slab of bass. It’s the lead up to his debut album, a step towards another phenomenal release from the artist.

So once again, it’s time to get with the Program… a catalogue that never disappoints.

02. Stealth & Xtrah – Everytime

Mind Vortex – Colours EP
Friday, October 24th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Mind Vortex – Colours EP

Image: 1593560 Locked away in sonic solitude, Mind Vortex have been building these next four cuts with absolute precision. And being such a pivotal signing for the RAM imprint, it’s no surprise that this EP has been met with almost unbearable anticipation.

Few acts capture the vibrancy and pent-up energy that Mind Vortex commands. Another charged assault on the ears, the ‘Colours EP’ is definitely a return to form. An impressive feat, having already set the bar high with tracks like ‘Hotbox’ being showcased on label head Andy C’s revered Nightlife series.

Setting the precedent for another round is ‘Overture’, used frequently as a set opener by Andy C as well as other prominent djs across the globe… And it’s easy to see why. Building to a point that leaves you dangling over the edge of a sky-scraper tall break, you’re dropped aboard a metallic riff. Driven by tightly snapping kicks, and being hit repeatedly by pounding subs, the composition reverberates across your synapses. Aggressive yet epic, and with a bite that epitomises their production flare, ‘Overture’ proves that Mind Vortex only have more to give.

Next up is ‘Colours’, alluding to Mind Vortex’s different stylistic dimensions. With a cinematic soundscape and emotionally lead vocals, it’s tenderly spoken but doesn’t lack in impact. A muscular bassline sits beneath grinding percussion, which is softened by loops of beat arpeggios. Sure-fire club anthems are what Mind Vortex capture perfectly and ‘Colours’ pedestals this form of art at its finest.

With an authoritative vocal sample leading you ear-drums first into the mix, ‘Underworld’ is foreboding from its first bass riff. A jittering coaster ride, this is roller explodes on impact, taking you deep into its namesake. The artists manipulate synth in a way which often can’t be matched, distorting sounds and smashing the prototype to pieces with carefully fashioned hits of drum.

And lastly, ‘Till the Sun Comes’ opens you up to the possibility of seeing the producer’s full musicality. A funk infused texture which is hits your aural taste buds with every loop, you’ll find it difficult not to be overcome by the track’s turbo-powered hook. Yet again, the duo has conjured a hotbed of forward thinking drum and bass, threatening to create unparalleled dance floor chaos.

One of their biggest releases to date, expect this EP to resound in both underground dancehalls and the headphones of dnb-heads everywhere. These four blasting production behemoths will ensure that Mind Vortex stay on the agenda’s forefront.

Delta Heavy – Reborn / Arcadia
Tuesday, October 14th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Delta Heavy – Reborn / Arcadia

Quintessential stadium anthems are Delta Heavy’s forte and ‘Reborn’ demonstrates how they’ve gained this reputation. Setting show stopping-agendas since their first release on the RAM imprint, this next one is no different, however, a cinematic roller…

Gerardo Frisina – Movement
Friday, September 26th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Gerardo Frisina – Movement

Dollkraut – Schimanski’s Black Lullabies
Friday, September 19th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Dollkraut – Schimanski’s Black Lullabies

Image: 1592019 Red Hot label The Gym present the debut album Schimansk’s Black Lullabies from Dollkraut.

Always in search of ancient mysteries’ – Pascal Pinkert a.k.a. Dollkraut celebrates a mystical
love for the space age which leaves the listener breathless with its celestial romanticism. Amalgamating
influences from 80’s Electro Funk, A and B-movie soundtracks to 70’s easy listening,
the Dutch composer, synth-wizard and vocalist creates a distinctive aesthetic that’s both
nostalgic and futuristic.
His debut LP ‘Schimanski’s Black Lullabies’ bellows ‘Cinema’ throughout its wide-spread and
epic travel and using vintage vocoders and filters, Dollkraut sings haunting themes on several
of the albums songs.
After years of releasing singles on Doppelschall, !K7 and Permanent Vacation amongst others,
Dollkraut finally presents his debut LP ‘Schimanski’s Black Lullabies’, a release that marks
his return to Brandt Brauer Frick and their co-owned label The Gym but – more importantly –
his florescence as a producer of daring and idiosyncratic electronic music.
The album is inspired not only by the sounds of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s but more specifically by
a kind of cult zeitgeist of each respective era. Nourished by TV programs like “The Scene” and
by OSTs, it’s flecks of Miami Bass and Off-key Electronica coupled with the use of B-Movie
snippets all work to provide a true insight into Dollkraut’s depth as a producer.
With a clear and consistent narrative throughout, the LP opens out for ‘Rollercoaster’ that initiates
a purposeful charge though churning organ tones and walking guitar melodies before a
cinematic theme opens up the landscape even more which works to contradict any expectations
of a House music album people may have had after Dollkraut’s dancefloor hit “Loot”.
This sequence theme, which seems to evoke the spirits of movie composers Bruno Nicolai or
Guido & Maurizio de Angelis, is reprised two times further on the album, creating a framework
and a lesson on superb re-instrumentation at the same time. Back on the dancefloor, the deliciously
mangled 80’s synth-pop tones of ‘The Stars And You’ take the foreground with a
haunting vocal line that makes this song an early highlight on the album as it spreads an elegant
breakdance vibe.
‘NSFW’ follows up with synth stabs and squelching blobs of acid scattered over a broken, late
70’s Electro beat before ‘Fire’ omits a ghostly, sunken glow that hypnotizes with nothing more
than a vocal, a darkly shining pad, a kick and a snare.
The tumbling Samba rhythms and Arabesque melodies of ‘Zaghrouta’ then give way to the
haunting minor-key and vocoder combination in ‘The Scene’ which precedes the predominantly
drum machine driven dancefloor destroyer ‘Theme Of Fukoyama.
The scattered hats and spring reverberated claps of ‘Amadou’ are then followed by another
standout song: ‘Yushkevic’, with especially emotional vocals by Dollkraut. Melody and
harmonies are equally reminiscent of traditional music from the Middle Orient and from the
Balkans. ‘Yushkevic’ will also appear on a single together with ‘The Stars And You’ and
remixes of both songs

Sierra Kidd – Kopfvilla EP
Friday, January 10th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sierra Kidd – Kopfvilla EP

Available from 20.12.2013

Various – Muscle Tuff
Thursday, September 19th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Muscle Tuff

Image: 1582499 MUSCLE TUFF is THE GYM’s label compilation. Each artist took a different approach to create mind blowing workout music. This compilation proves that GYM aficionados can be melancholic and deeply existentialistic, meditating on the world’s serious issues, while gently pumping iron.
THE GYM emerged out of an old circle of friends, throwing parties and DJing together, while slowly building their individual careers. It became a record label when co-owners Brandt Brauer Frick made their first steps in the music scene. Other GYM members include film & video producers, club curators and bodybuilders.
MUSCLE TUFF is a snapshot of the contributors’ current state of mind. Eight of nine tracks have been produced exclusively for this compilation.
Berlin-based singer and producer Josa Peit opens with “Waste”, a hypnotic soul sketch, her vocals beautifully fragile and intense, with analogue synths creating sonic Alice In Wonderland moments.
Brandt Brauer Frick play a fast and raw Techno track. One feels like working out in the jungle, or participating in a ritual worship of an archaic goddess. This time, they used only synths, as Juno-106, SH-101 or Nord Drums, and left piano and other acoustic instruments aside, contradicting their signature sound.
Offenbach-based Bodo Elsel delivers a radical old school approach, a bone dry one-take house miniature, crooning “I Can’t Reset My Mind” in his unimitable sloppy style, over cascades of dry 707, 808 and SP12 beats and claps.
Copenhagen producer and long-time collaborator James Braun teams up with Dan M for “People Move”, a slow burner of the kind that are truly hard to find and that take you from a low level into haunting ecstasy.
Next up is Berlin’s 20 year-old house, bass and hiphop prodigy Max Graef, His exceptional musical skills came to the labels attention during an in-store gig at the legendary OYE RECORDS in Berlin. He is a unique talent and musically wise beyond his years. Enjoy “Nr 3” and brace yourself for his upcoming “Get Big Fast” EP on THE GYM.
For those who know THE GYM’s former releases, it’s evident that Dollkraut can’t miss. The Dutch analogue sound wizard keeps on fascinating us with his golden touch for pop moments. “Catch My Soul” is an old pearl and one of Dollkraut’s most housy tracks. As it has never been released on vinyl and has proven to be a long time GYM mover it had to be on MUSCLE TUFF.
THE GYM’s brotherhood with Tartelet Records keeps on flourishing on Tartelet’s label head Muff Deep’s contribution: “Let’s Go To The Gym”! It’s hot & sweaty and it gets you. It sounds like a drunken Theo Parrish in a Honda, caught in a thunderstorm on his way to THE GYM, trying to work the MPC. Kind of.
One of the clubbiest tracks on the album is supplied by Freude am Tanzen and BPitch boy Douglas Greed, whose straight and no-bullshit techno track “Raw And Order” leads from agitating percussion into synth madness, GYM music at its purest. On its finishing track, MUSCLE TUFF opens up into the glamorous new wave disco world of the mysterious Frenchman Bernard Crochet. He is an almost entirely unknown face to the
electronic music scene, except for his 2012 debut with Dollkraut. We know nothing about him, and it’s hard to situate him in any context in 2013. One thing is certain, he has access to some crazy rare vintage gear and he’s not afraid of big emotions!
MUSCLE TUFF!
