Kevin Over – Mobilee Back To Back Vol.11
Saturday, February 18th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Kevin Over – Mobilee Back To Back Vol.11

Image: 1608862 Kevin Over is up next on the new edition of Mobilee Back to Back.

A1 Kevin Over – Look At Me Sartre
A2 Kevin Over – 2002 [Soulphiction Dub]

B1 Kevin Over – Blue Ox [Marquis Hawkes Remix]
B2 Kevin Over – Shady [Jacob Korn Remix]

C1 Kevin Over – Hillside AV
C2 Kevin Over – Pfeffi Care

D1 Kevin Over – Trevor Knows
D2 Kevin Over – Vember

Kevin Over further cements his status as mobilee’s most exciting fresh talent with a blistering collection of unheard material, deftly showcasing the work of a young artist rapidly reaching critical mass.

You don’t come to find yourself at the helm of one of the most successful underground house and techno imprints without a keen eye for fresh talent, that which has the potential to be nurtured, moulded and pushed to the next level. Anja Schneider has worked hard to hone that skill over the years, fine-tuning her instinctive, risk-taking persona, as a result, she just knows when someone is worth investing in. With that said, she new has her new protégé Kevin Over locked firmly in her sights – and with good reason.

But even so, for Over to find himself behind the wheel of one of mobilee’s annual long-form releases, despite him barely being over a quarter of a century old (not to mention having only met its founder in person less than a year ago), is quite something. But then again, Anja Schneider isn’t your usual A&R, and Kevin Over isn’t your usual ‘talent’ – as if his recent stellar run of EPs on Truesoul, Nofitstate, Avotre and of course mobilee in the last year alone, didn’t tell you already.

Part compilation, and part album, Over was keen to emphasize how this was his first musically extensive project which followed a defined musical structure, and was consistent in its vibe and mood from beginning to end, “I felt like I needed more of a defined direction at this point in my career, as many of my EPs had traversed a wide variety of styles. The whole process took around three months, drawing from my early influences in garage and Chicago house as well as older funk stuff. I definitely got lost down the Youtube rabbit hole whilst looking for things to sample! I’m also so proud of having some of my favorite artists such as Marquis Hawkes, Jacob Korn and Soulphiction on board for remixes as well.”

As a result, the package displays a remarkably well-rounded cohesion, despite many of the tracks being wildly disparate in a musical sense. They all contain that trademark Over sound that’s hard to put your finger on, be it the piston-driven, jacking drums, the use of dirt and distortion as a textural tool, or the understated yet catchy melodies. The gloriously gravelly deep house of ‘Vember’ contrasts beautifully against the woozy, euphoria of ‘Look At Me Sartre’. There’s everything from disco-inflected bangers (‘Pfeffi Care’) to bittersweet, nostalgic house making an appearance (‘Hillside Av.’), rounding off with his haunting take on Rodriguez Jr.’s 2012 anthem ‘Satellite’

As is tradition with the ‘Back To Back’ series, the full package will also be accompanied by a ‘best of’ mobilee tracks from the previous year, with tracks from Audiofly, Ray Opkara, Rodriguez Jr. amongst many others, and of course Anja Schneider herself. Kevin’s series of original tracks and remixes will be available to buy as a 2 x 12” gatefold package. A tour is also scheduled to follow.

And though the French-born, Geneva-based artist may not have a manor to his name, the rest isn’t far off the mark. Born Renaud Lewandowski, Lee has earned […]

„Baobab is about roots. It has mainly been written whilst travelling and I needed to re-connect to my roots: the music I used to listen to as a teenager from South Of France, my first parties, this fantastic sense of freshfulness, enthusiasm and innocence. This is why I decided to call it Baobab: a big tree proud to grow up in a lush surrounding, with it’s roots deep in the floor’.

Lee Van Dowski – Cerca Trova
Friday, February 12th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Lee Van Dowski – Cerca Trova

Image: 1602326 Shapeshifting French producer Lee Van Dowski drops his first album in 10 years with ‘Cerca Trova’, a career triumph work spanning ambient techno, breaks and beyond.

The LP’s title, translates to ‘Search / Find’ and like the name, sees the Geneva-based artist digging deep into his musical repertoire. The 14-track work harks back to his diverse musical roots, when an initial passion for techno soon led the artist into more experimental territory with the likes of Autechre, Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, Richard Devine and Otto Van Schirac, fuelling his musical obsession.

The artist – a father of two twin boys – says he wanted to leave something for his sons to remember him by. Likewise, since his last artist album ‘As Told On The Eve Of…’ with Quenum released on Soma in 2006, he wanted to surprise people, while challenging himself to create a narrative beyond the dancefloor. And anyone who has paid even cursory notice of his productions over the years will notice the expansive palette of sounds the Frenchman has explored through the work, which although diverse, flows smoothly from one multilayered moment to the next.

From the glitchy stylings of opening track ‘Creating Me’, to the ‘‘I.L.A.N.E.N.O’, a dreamy ambient collaboration with old friend Caroline Hervé (aka Miss Kittin), that was created after they spent a weekend in the mountains with Lee’s kids, the producer sets about building a creative and cohesive trip across 70 minutes.

There’s ‘1+1’, a grand, orchestral breakbeat-driven cut awash with strings and vocal harmonies and the evocative ‘Repli Tactique’, an intoxicating wall of sound, driven by rich Flamenco-style guitar licks, before Lee shifts the momentum up a gear for the stunning electro breaks of ‘The One’. The grininducing ‘Dans Tes Yeux’ is five minutes of pure, driving breakbeat euphoria, before the tempo is taken into gritty acid techno territory with ‘Toran’. To close, he then brings us down again with the beautiful title track, followed by the
delicate piano-laden concluder ‘Sinon Toi’.

An artist reborn since joining Anja Schneider’s Mobilee Records in 2013, the album follows on from Lee’s outstanding past 12 months that saw him drop releases on Cocoon, Bedrock, Suara, Rebellion (sub-label of Crosstown Rebels), This and That and of course Mobilee, home to ‘050504’, one of the year’s biggest techno tracks.

DMX Crew – You Exist
Friday, January 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on DMX Crew – You Exist

Image: 1601821 Hypercolour proudly announce the latest long player from UK stalwart, Ed DMX AKA DMX Krew, the visionary British electronic producer who has been responsible for a slew of excellent releases for labels like Rephlex, Spectral Sound, Permanent Vacation and his own Breakin’ Records and Fresh Up Records since the mid 1990s.

‘You Exist’ is DMX Krew’s debut appearance on Hypercolour, and as expected the record features nine tracks of beautifully crafted, melodic electronic sounds. From the opener ‘Spiritual Encounter’, DMX sets the tone perfectly with oodles of pitch perfect synth riffs and driving drums, working his way through snappy and bright pop moments like ‘Hard Copy’ to more melancholic, darker cuts like ‘Computational Paradigm Shift’. DMX breezes in and out of electro techno territory to more contemplative IDM vibes with ease, testimony to the guy’s talent (that’s also seen him wear the hat of over 10 aliases throughout his career to date).

‘You Exist’ captures a very true and genuine musical form, produced and delivered with love from one of the scene’s unsung heroes, and makes it a great companion piece to another Hypercolour released album from similar stock (take your pick from Luke Vibert’s 2014 ‘Ridmik’ album or his latest Kerrier District LP). A consistent and engaging album then from DMX Krew that will pleasure the ear buds of discerning listeners everywhere.

J.Wiltshire – False Awakening
Wednesday, April 22nd, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on J.Wiltshire – False Awakening

Image: 1596717 J. Wiltshire returns with his new single False Awakening on Hypercolour.

TRACKLIST

A1. False Awakening (Original Mix)
A2. False Awakening (Clubby Tool Mix)
B1. False Awakening (Tuff City Kids Remix)
B2. False Awakening (Tuff City Kids Dub Copy)

J. Wiltshire follows up 2013’s Hypercolour single, “How It Is” with an offering that’s quite a leap from his seductive deep house sound, gracing us with a hugely mature sounding slice of brooding electro body popping bizzness!

In its Original Mix, “False Awakening” opens with delicate pizzicato synth plucks over a deadly electro-tinged beat that gets warped and crushed as dense sweeping strings and digital glitches come tumbling down on the unfolding arrangement. Like a neo-classical Underground Resistance, a funky as you like bass-line heralds in a discordant and haunting vocal line, which really ramps up the melancholic mood. All the while, the futuristic beat really propels this track along at an urgent pace. On his “Clubby Tool Mix”, Wiltshire digs into the mechanics of the track, slapping resonators on the drums and further manipulating the sound with some clever studio trickery.

Tuff City Kids, AKA Gerd Janson and Phillip Lauer, come fresh from singles on Permanent Vacation and remixes for Numbers, Crème Organisation and Visionquest with their take on “False Awakening”. TCK come out guns a blazing with a heavy kick and abrasive hats, looping a fragment on the vocal whilst the stabby bass and 909 hats set the heady vibe here. A growling synth line unfurls and the remix pounds hard and heavy, a little melodic organ line its only respite from the pummeling groove. The duo throw in a beats mix, the “Dub Copy”, just like the old days, as a little tool to keep us all happy, job done!

PBR Streetgang & X-Press 2 – Cosine (feat. Lauer / A Sagittariun RMXs)
Friday, February 20th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on PBR Streetgang & X-Press 2 – Cosine (feat. Lauer / A Sagittariun RMXs)

Image: 1595544 Two British house music duos team up for an almighty ‘ménage à quatre’ on Futureboogie this March, ably assisted by remixes from Lauer and A Sagittariun.

A1. Cosine (Original Mix)
A2. Key Free (Original Mix)
B1. Cosine (Lauer Remix)
B2. Cosine (A Sagittariun Futuro Re-Dream)

PBR Streetgang are no strangers to Futureboogie, having released the 2012 ‘Double Boogie’ EP and are regular supporters of the label over the years. The Leeds based pair have racked up some great singles for the likes of Throne Of Blood, 2020 Vision and Wolf Music.

And X-Press 2 will need little introduction, suffice to say that Rocky & Diesel have been at the forefront of the house music scene since day dot, and a career that has spanned underground gems for Junior Boys Own to chart hits for Skint and so many great musical moments in between.

‘Cosine’ in its Original Mix perfectly encapsulates the sound of both artists, X-Press 2 bringing the dark and brooding atmosphere to the table whilst PBR indulge in some cosmically tantric arpeggiated synth work and a fathoms deep bassline, whilst vocal refrains and distant bells create the ambience. A very heavy mood piece from the team here!

The arp riff stays center stage for the two accompanying remixes of ‘Cosine’. Lauer, AKA Philip Lauer, goes for a more ethereal and piano driven take. As one half of Tuff City Kids (with Gerd Janson) and solo artist in his own right for labels like Running Back, Permanent Vacation and Beats In Space, Lauer provides a glossy and smooth re-rub of the original that demands for late night action!

The second remix of ‘Cosine’ comes from A Sagittairun, the Bristol based techno cosmonaut who has been releasing a myriad of deep techno and ambient dub sounds on his Elastic Dreams imprint. The ‘Futuro Re-Dream’ ramp up the energy levels, and takes the beat down electro alley, brimming with Detroit techno tropes, breakbeats and rave-esque bass for a funky & futuristic flashback moment.

‘Key Free’, the second original production from PBR & X-Press 2, goes super-size, with the melodious free wheeling keys providing the jack work over the industrious drum pattern. Deadly synth sweeps bring the depth as the booming kick and ricocheting claps push this one further into techno territory whilst retaining the swing and melody of another classy Futureboogie release.

Selected DJ reactions

James Zabiela – Cosine is wicked, digging the electro of A Sagittariun Mix
Ewan Pearson – Lauer Remix is arpeggio heaven, love it!
Laura Jones (Visionquest) – playing the A Sagittariun mix
Sei A – Cosine is great
Brett Johnson – A Sagittariun’s electro mix is dope
Tom Trago – Lauer & A Sagittariun remixes!
Moxie (Radio 1) – Feeling the Sagittariun mix, love the 80s electro vibe
Anja Schneider (Mobilee) – Double Trouble!
Peter Kruder – Love Cosine Original, will play
Phillipe Zdar (Cassius) – Really like Key Free
Hrdvision – diggin’ the A Sagittariun mix Available from 13.03.2015
