El Michels Affair – Sounding Out The City
Friday, June 17th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on El Michels Affair – Sounding Out The City

Image: 1604721 Over 10 years ago, Leon Michels released his first full length record, Sounding Out The City. It was Michels’ first full length record under
the moniker El Michels Affair. At the time, the budding retro soul scene consisted of mostly organ quartets a la The Meters and of course,
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings were in the early days of their ascent to world domination.
Leon Michels, who was 18 when recording Sounding Out The City began, had just released Thunder Chicken, the first record by his high
school band The Mighty Imperials. At the time of SOTC, Michels was just discovering early rocksteady, afrobeat, and 60’s garage rock,
which inevitably crept its way into the songwriting. He purchased a Tascam 388, an 80’s 1/4″ reel to reel 8 track intended for home
recordings, and began recording music in a 10×10 box with no windows that also doubled as his childhood bedroom. Along with fellow
Mighty Imperials Nick Movshon, Homer Steinweiss, and Sean Solomon, and Michael Leonhart, Thomas Brenneck, and some of the
musicians from The Dap Kings, Michels recorded the LP over a two year period.
Upon it’s release, it received some rave reviews and the small deep funk community ate it up, but due to the lack luster promotion and
distribution the rest of the world was slow to catch on to the instrumental gems featured on SOTC, which Michels appropriately labeled
as “cinematic soul”. However, in 2005 it found it’s way into the hands of the people who were organizing a series of concerts for Scion
that paired bands with MC’s. El Michels Affair was contacted about playing one show with Raekwon The Chef of Wu Tang Clan fame. The
show was such a success it led to a tour, and then to another set of concerts that featured multiple members of the Wu-Tang Clan. This
eventually led to the release of El Michels Affair’s second record, “Enter the 37th Chamber” which introduced them to a much larger
audience and has been their most successful release to date.
Michels has since gone on to produce and co-produce numerous records for powerhouse soul artists like Lee Fields. He shares
songwriting credits with Adele, Jay-Z, Ghostface Killah, Aloe Blacc, and has played on records by Ray LaMontagne, Lana Del Rey, The
Black Keys and Dr. John.

Various – Motor City Drum Ensemble – Selectors 001
Friday, February 12th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Motor City Drum Ensemble – Selectors 001

Image: 1601770 MCDE shares some of his most prized gems on this compilation that kicks of the limited Dekmantel ‘Selectors’ series.

1. DJ Slym Fas – Luv Music
2. House Of Jazz – Hold Your Head Up
3. 20 Below – A Lil Tribute To The Moody Black Keys
4. Risque III – Essence Of A Dream
5. Licky – African Rock
6. Raphael Green – Don’t Mess With The Devil
7. Ahzz – New York’s Movin (Instrumental)
8. Bill Deal – Freak n Freeze

What, exactly, is a selector? Dekmantel has long been determined to find out, even before the Amsterdam-based crew added an official Selectors stage to its annual summer festival in 2014. While the stage has since played host to an elite class of DJs that includes the likes of Floating Points, Mike Servito, Traxx, DJ Harvey, Ben UFO, and Donato Dozzy, to name just a few, Dekmantel came to realize that the Selectors concept needed a larger platform of its own.

As such, 2016 will see the launch of both a limited-capacity festival and compilation series, both bearing the Selectors name. The compilations will come first, with Motor City Drum Ensemble, Young Marco, and Joy Orbison at the helm of the initial three chapters. These are not mix CDs, every Selectors compilation will include a collection of hand-picked, unmixed tracks personally curated by the artist.

Admittedly, drawing a line between “selectors” and mere DJs is an all-but-impossible task—it’s essentially a “you know it when you see it” proposition—but it’s hard to argue that Motor City Drum Ensemble (a.k.a. Danilo Plessow) doesn’t tick all of the required boxes. He’s been digging for records since his teenage years, and his DJing has become the stuff of legend, thanks in no small part to his head-turning sets at the last few Dekmantel festivals.

In truth, Plessow’s relationship with Dekmantel dates back to the earliest days of the Motor City Drum Ensemble project, making him a natural candidate to head up the inaugural Selectors compilation. As expected, he’s thrown himself into the task, selecting a want list from his collection of 15,000 records was no easy task, but getting permission for the final tracklist was even tougher.

One song in particular, Raphael Green’s “Don’t Mess with the Devil,” required him to personally call up a church in St. Louis, Missouri. “The guy, he’s a Bishop,” he says. “When the Ferguson protests were happening, for example, he was on CNN explaining his thoughts on the whole thing, so he’s a known public figure, but nobody really knew that he had this amazing record that was recorded in ’79 or ’80. His voice is just unbelievable. It’s the kind of record that when I heard it the first time, I couldn’t believe that there had only been like 100 copies pressed, and that this wasn’t actually big.”

Motor City Drum Ensemble’s record bag is full of these kinds of gems, but he has no qualms about sharing a few of his secret weapons with a wider audience. “I wanted to get some of the stuff that is really, really hard to get, and make it available for younger people,” he explains. “I used to be in the same situation. Back when I was 18, I would listen to a Rainer Truby mix and he would only play these $400 Brazilian records. I was like, ‘Fuck, how am I ever going to be able to afford these?’ I was glad when there was a reissue, and it’s a bit the same with the compilation now.”
“Basically,” he explains, “the approach for the compilation was, ‘If I walked into a record store, what kind of compilation would I buy?’ That’s what I did.” Available from 13.05.2016

Beneficence – Basement Chemistry

Image: 1601530 After dropping back to back classics with “Sidewalk Science” (2011)
and “”Concrete Soul”” (2012), Brick City veteran and Ill Adrenaline
Records co-founder Beneficence unleashes his 6th solo LP
“Basement Chemistry”. Armed with the true sounds of the golden
era Benef drops rejuvenated flows and shares mics with hip-hop’s
elite lyricists. The lineup includes Inspectah Deck (of Wu-Tang Clan),
Masta Ace, MC Eiht, El Da Sensei, AG (of D.I.T.C), Dres (of Black
Sheep), The Legion, Chubb Rock, MindsOne, and Estee Nack (of
Tragic Allies).
Once again the close Artifacts affiliate traps the listener into slick,
thought provoking rhymes backed by hard hitting yet soulful
production from DJ Spinna, Da Beatminerz, 12 Finger Dan,
Confidence, L’Orange, Presto, KON Sci, Jazz Spastiks, and many
more. 19-tracks strong, the dusty and raw sounding full length
displays a perfect blend of street jewels like the Inspectah Deck
laced “Digital Warfare” and the Masta Ace inspiring anthem “When
The Sun Comes”.
The P Original produced banger “Easy As 1-2” opens the album
brilliantly showing Benef’s relaxed but witty cadence. “Basement
Chemistry” travels down many avenues including the battle rap
driven joint “Against The Grain” and storytelling saga “Maui Vacation”.
The album’s formula stays true to the game with obscure samples,
intricate cuts, and official boom bap sound.

Various – Feeling Nice Vol.3 (2LP/Gatefold)
Friday, August 28th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Feeling Nice Vol.3 (2LP/Gatefold)

Image: 1599251 Friends and fans of Tramp Records in general, and of the ‘Feeling Nice’ series specifically, will be feeling even nicer this time around with the release of this deep and soulful new collection: Feeling Nice Volume 3. These recordings have been painstakingly sought-out and unearthed from as far away as Hawaii, Canada, and Jamaica (in addition to the usual Texas, Ohio, and Georgia). This music has been carefully transferred (in some cases form the sole known copy) and remastered to the highest standards of audio quality. Finally, through a determined and diligent research effort leading to interviews with the owners of the rights to the original masters, Feeling Nice Volume 3’s detailed liner notes offer you an enlightening window into the lives of the musicians, producers, and independent record labels responsible for some of the deepest music on the planet. All of this in addition to full color label scans and never before seen publicity photos.

Of course, to friends and fans of Tramp Records, none of this is a surprise as you have come to expect consequential projects promoting cultural and historical significance delivered with the love of a fellow record digger and the science of a musicologist. Tramp Records remains one of the champions of rare deep funk soul and jazz on vinyl, uniting thorough research, respect of the original artists and art form, and thoughtful curation of great singles, albums and compilations. You will enjoy spinning this record, your guests will enjoy listening to it, and you will be proudly displaying it in the hallowed “Tramp Records” section of your record shelf, right next to Feeling Nice 1 & 2. (you DO have Feeling Nice 1 & 2 don’t you?! if not, I encourage you to collect them immediately at tramprecords.com)

Some of the highlights of Feeling Nice Volume 3 are one of the rarest 45s on the Alston label and in our opinion also one of the best, Clarence Reid’s “I Get My Kicks”. A James Brown influenced wah wah funk monster, “Stand-Up Baby” by Canada’s Saint John. “The Jack Mod Kick” by Jake, Ricky and Jack Townshend aka Jack & The Mods, ranging in age from 6 to 18 and discovered almost accidentally while rehearsing in a rundown shack in rural Virgina! We’ve got Rickey Andrews taking us on a late 60s dance-move tour of the U.S. with “Chances Are Your Dance is Mine”. A rare sister funk masterpiece called “Leave Me Alone” by Nadine Brown from 1977. Leroy & The Drivers’ critical track, “The Sad Chicken”, produced in under 30 minutes with their last remaining studio time in 1970 and still ringing loud across the land. One of the nastiest versions of The Iselys’ “It’s Your Thing” coming out of Jamaica and SO MUCH MORE!!

Lucky Brown – October 2015

Key selling points:
– 400 of the 1000 pressed vinyl LPs come with a bonus 7″ by William Cummings (“Make My Love A Hurting Thing”)
– 16-page CD-booklet and deluxe double-gatefold LP with detailed liner notes, label scans and unseen photographs
– properly mastered for the best sound-quality possible

Fatnice – Peace Love Unity and Havin Fun
Friday, June 20th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Fatnice – Peace Love Unity and Havin Fun

Image: 1589954 DJ support from Rich Medina, Kev Beadle, DJ Cash Money, Eavesdrop Radio and KCRW. Fatnice is multi talented to say the least. The avant garde MC, producer, singer, and writer grew up listening to tons of records and tapes from his aunts collections which were comprised primarily of soul and funk gems. A prolific house head, Fatnice became entrenched in the boombap sounds of hiphop via the roar of Melle Melle rhyming The Message in 1982. An avid writer of poetry Fatnice found it addicting being able to combine rhymes with beats to create music.

Born in Chicago and being in love with education, Fatnice traveled to Atlanta, GA, in 1992 in pursuit of higher learning at Clark Atlanta University. During his matriculation Fatnice continued to delve deep into the abyss of music via record collecting, checking out shows at the famous Funk Jazz Cafe, and battling MC’s around the Atlanta University Center. Although Fatnice had been performing since the age of 11, he would get a true taste of the stage upon landing in the City of Philadelphia in the fall of 98.

Fatnice found himself in Philadelphia, once again pursuing higher learning and rocking open mics on the campus of The University of Pennsylvania’s’ Veranda Room(The Gathering). Shortly after his arrival Fatnice linked with classmate Darin Tolliver (aka Gamez) and became a member of Philly juggernaut Prophets of Ghetto having the honor of opening up for the likes of Public Enemy and Dilated Peoples. Upon graduating from PENN in 2000, Fatnice’s decision to stay in Philly led him to a life of recording and traveling internationally with the now defunct Philadelphia based hiphop trio 84. Fatnice has had the humbling experience of working with greats such as DJ Cash Money, Bahamadia, Cee Knowledge of Digable Planets and a host of others.

Presently Fatnice, a true believer in the art of moving the crowd, still performs, records and writes as well as flexing his vocal talents under the alias Mojo Green. Along with his production partner Blaak the 9th Man, the two have created Welcome To Soulville where Fatnice releases material such as his project ‘It’s Nice To Meet You’

“Soulville is like being on a runaway train with no direction..You don’t know what to expect..All you know is that it will be a soulful & funky ride musically..” (DJ Cash Money)

“Fat Nice & Blaak The 9th Man are two of Philadelphia’s best kept musical secrets. People really have no idea how deep their sonic rabbit hole goes. These guys got more talent in their left pinky finger nails than many of your favorite pop stars have in their entire entourages. Yeah, I said that. Welcome to Soulvillle.” (Rich Medina)

“Soulville is like a never ending well of knowledge & Fatnice/Blaak are like the men who replenishes the people of the village.” (Hezekiah)

Image: 1587774 Soul Jazz Records new release Inner City Beat! Detective Themes, Spy Music and Imaginary Thrillers 1967-1975 is a unique CD / 2LP release that comes with an exclusive limited-edition specially created 60-page graphic novel (by the mysterious cult 1960s pulp-fiction writer Mark ‘Badly’ Antringham).

The music on the album is a killer selection of funky, deep, rare, exciting and dancefloor heavyweight ‘spy themes’, ‘detective music’ and thrillers from the 1960s and 1970s. The music spans heavyweight break-beat funk, deep and heavy jazz, super-catchy mod themes, imaginary super-charged orchestral soundtracks and more.
These tracks are put together from British library music companies (DeWolfe, KPM, Conroy, Amphonic), all of whom supplied music regularly to television and films around the world during this period, often for use in detective and spy programmes, series and films. Many were never broadcast and have thus remained unheard, stored in the vaults for many years.
To accompany this unique album, Soul Jazz have also commissioned the creation of a special 60-page graphic novel which features the stunning artwork of the elusive illustrator John C. Patterson in partnership with the celebrated 1960s pulp fiction cult novelist Mark ‘Badly’ Antringham. The graphic novel is set in the imaginary seedy streets of East London in the 1960s in a world full of corrupt police, political intrigue and violent sadistic criminals. This unique limited-edition graphic novel comes free with the initial run of the album Inner City Beat.

Heavyweight deluxe gatefold super-loud double vinyl release (with free download code). This vinyl album also includes the full graphic novel.

Sound Of The City Experience – Sound Of The City Experience
Wednesday, January 1st, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sound Of The City Experience – Sound Of The City Experience

Image: 1585945 One of the eternal issues of record collecting is the question of how good records actually become rare. Perhaps the record company goes bust. Perhaps the label is busy pushing some lame pop act on the roster, leaving the good stuff to rot. Maybe the band splits up just before the release. Less frequent than any of these is this: perhaps the record wasn’t supposed to sell in the first place. As strange as it seems, that was exactly the case with this album, the Sounds of the City Experience.

In our Holy Grail reissue of the highly-sought after Sounds of the City Experience LP on notorious tax-scam label Tiger Lilly, we interview the producer Mario Sprouse and find out exactly why this album is so rare. We discover and disclose the story behind the band and why they made these high-quality recordings which were never intended for release. Discover all this in our detailed liner notes, along with previously unseen pictures of the band in action.

Exciting debut album from Robinn, a native Frenchmen now based in London. “Multiphonia” is delivering a bass heavy sound that sits somewhere in between Four Tet, Bonobo, Mount Kimbie, post-dubstep and electronic reggae. Featuring the vocals of Nathaniel Pearn aka Natural Self (Tru Thoughts). Robinn’s music is somehow self-splitting into two cultural and mental superstructures, […]

Bicep – Vision Of Love (Carl Craig Edits)
Friday, May 17th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Bicep – Vision Of Love (Carl Craig Edits)

Image: 1581264 It’s a rare thing for two labels to come together to release a track, but KMS Records and Feel My Bicep have done exactly that.

‘Vision Of Love’ was produced by two London based, Belfast-born blogger-production-DJ duo, Matt McBriar and Andy Ferguson. Matt and Andy need little by way of introduction. Their ‘Feel My Bicep’ blog is the go-to place for tastemakers world-wide for lost and forgotten disco/Chicago house/Detroit techno/Italo edits and everything in-between. Their remix track record has also been excellent with them stamping their distinguished sound upon works from Blondes, Toby Tobias, Chamboche, Blood Orange, Cosmic Kids and many more for labels such as Domino, Wolf Music and Tusk. Will Saul then snapped them up for his label Aus, with a collaborative EP including tracks ‘You’ and ‘Don’t’, which hit number one on Juno and caused the Beatport charts some bother. Then in September 2012, Feel My Bicep, (the label) launched with the highly sought after track ‘Vision Of Love.’ It turns out that Matt and Andy had found an old Inner City track named ‘Good Love’ (originally written by Kevin Saunderson and Ann Saunderson back in 2000) and naively, they sampled a section of the song and created their new track around Paris’s vocal. Feel My Bicep, then released the track on vinyl only, as a limited pressing.

Matt and Andy explained “like many house producers, when sketching down ideas and jamming in the studio, we sometimes roll through acapellas to find any little vocals snippets that work well over beats we’ve done. In one particular instance we stumbled across an Inner City acapella ‘Good Love’ that really worked with a piano riff. We titled the track ‘Vision Of Love’ and released it as a, limited pressing, vinyl release. In our naivete, we figured that we’d sell a few 12″s and no one would really take any notice… Then, much to our surprise the track started getting played on radio 1 and getting a lot of interest. We then realised that we would have to sort out a deal with Kevin, as the sample’s owner. Thankfully, he was very understanding about the whole thing and we worked out a deal to give him and Ann the credit that’s due. So, while we’re sticking to our original plan to keep that entire EP as vinyl only, Kevin’s label (KMS Records), are releasing ‘Vision Of Love’ as a digital single”.

At the time of doing this Press Release, Ann Saunderson said… “It’s amazing to know that a song that I co-wrote in the year 2000 is still influencing a whole new generation of people today. Having a song with a ‘bit of muscle’ never hurt anyoneJ… Good Luck with this one Bicep”

Kevin had this to add… “Inner City and myself have a long history of influencing people and the music scene with our songs. Especially with our vocal tracks and a track that was written by myself and Ann, way back in 2000 (for Inner City), is no exception. The track in question is ‘Good Love’. At the end of last year I heard the track ‘Vision Of Love’ and I instantly recognized that the sample was taken from ‘Good Love’. I thought, wow, that’s ‘Good Love’ and it works really well over that piano. There was some really good music happening, it had a nice sound to it and it was just perfect. I knew the artist was Bicep, so I thought let me try and reach out to these guys, to see if they would be up for letting me release the record, digitally. I could give it some exposure and we can have a win/win situation for everyone. So, we made contact with the label, we worked out a deal and here we are now!! KMS is about to release the track. It’s very catchy and very hooky and that’s a part of my soul, always. It doesn’t always have to be just musical, both vocals and melodies have been very important to some of the biggest tracks that I’ve ever created”.

No remixes have been commissioned on ‘Vision Of Love’, but KMS is very lucky and very happy to announce that none other than Carl Craig himself, has graciously submitted a ‘c2 Edit’ and a ‘c2 Bonus Edit’, to make this a very special release indeed.

So here we go… here it is… ‘Vision Of Love’ by Bicep. Available from 24.05.2013
