Shina Williams & His African Percussions – Agboju Logun
Friday, May 5th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Shina Williams & His African Percussions – Agboju Logun

Image: 1609896 Strut present a brand new 12” reissue of Shina Williams’ monster Nigerian disco anthem ‘Agboju Logun’, pairing the rare original album version (released on Phonodisk Nigeria) with the more sparse 12” remix which surfaced later internationally on Earthworks. This is the third release on STRUT’S new Original Masters Series.

Tracklisting:
A1. AGBOJU LOGUN (12” version)
B1. AGBOJU LOGUN (LP version)

Strut present a brand new 12” reissue of Shina Williams’ monster Nigerian disco anthem ‘Agboju Logun’, pairing the rare original album version (released on Phonodisk Nigeria) with the more sparse 12” remix which surfaced later internationally on Earthworks.
Back in 1979 when Shina Williams’ ‘Agboju Logun’ frst appeared on his ‘African Dances’ LP, Williams knew well that the track was breaking new ground. “I want to show the whole wide world that Africa is alive with modern musicians to reckon with anywhere,” he stated. Now an accepted Afro disco classic of its time, ‘Agboju Logun’ did indeed bring together the cream of Nigeria’s players as a oneoff supergroup in one inspired session. As a long-standing and well respected highlife musician and vocalist, Williams called in the ‘A’ list: Tunde Martins from Afro Collective played bass guitar, the brilliant Biddy Wright (player on albums by Lijadu Sisters, Blo and many more) contributed the famous synth lines and handled production, Fred Fisher was on trombone and Saliu Alabi played talking drum.
Enjoying limited success upon its release in Nigeria, ‘African Dances’ nevertheless gained some international attention when Earthworks’ Jumbo Van Renan licensed two tracks from it for an international 12” single release in 1984, remixing ‘Agboju Logun’ in a more stripped back mix for dancefloors. However, it was the period following Fela Kuti’s death in the late ‘90s that truly ignited interest in archive African grooves for a new
internet generation. Strut’s frst ‘Nigeria 70’ compilation featured the track in 2000 and it has been a staple in DJs’ crates ever since. ‘Abboju Logun’ is released in a picture jacket 12” featuring original artwork and all musicians’ credits and is fully remastered by The Carvery.

KEY POINTS:
– First offcial reissue of 12” version and LP version together
– Restored by See Why Audio and remastered by The Carvery
– Sleeve features original Phonodisk artwork and musicians’ credits
– Essential reissue of Afro disco classic

FOR FANS OF:

The Gaslamp Killer – Instrumentalepathy
Friday, October 28th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Gaslamp Killer – Instrumentalepathy

Image: 1606856 With many new roads traveled over the last few years, The Gaslamp
Killer is back with the full-length LP Instrumentalepathy. GLK will
initiate his new imprint Cuss Records with Instrumentalepathy.
French surrealism artist Albane Simon designed the cover, supplying
an array of psychedelic imagery that contains a brilliant sense of
connection to GLK’s music & the chaos he’s survived.
Instrumentalepathy features an impressive cast of artists tied closely
to GLK over his music career with Brainfeeder, Low End Theory and
beyond. Guests include Gonjasufi, Miguel Atwood Ferguson, Niki
Randa, Kid Moxie, Mophono, Amir Yaghmai and The Heliocentrics.
It’s been over a decade since GLK and Gonjasufi have collaborated
on new music, bringing the two natives of San Diego back together
for something truly special.
As many know, GLK used the triumphs of battling a near death
experience three years ago when shaping his debut Cuss Records
album. A handful of the tracks were even captured from his bed,
unable to walk, with morphine running through his veins and staples
in his body. A musical illumination that one could argue helped
save his life and steared him towards the achievements he has
accumulated with his live band The Gaslamp Killer Experience.
Instrumentalepathy marks the catalyst point of an important road for
GLK and the electronic community at large.
Instrumentelephy, like his latest releases, continues down the rabbit
hole of his debut full length Breakthrough (Brainfeeder) and the recent
live record with his band The Gaslamp Killer Experience. Molding
psychedelic ethos and heavy drum breaks with the traditional music
language of his ancestors and the futuristic landscapes of modern
electronica, GLK continues to push the boundaries of contemporary
music.

Les McCann – Talk To The People
Monday, October 30th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Les McCann – Talk To The People

Image: 1616392 Throughout the 1960s, composer/vocalist Les
McCann cultivated a strong reputation as an
innovator of soul-jazz piano, having released
numerous albums worth of early fusion gems,
including the historically acclaimed Swiss
Movement, which rendered a Billboard Top 40 chart
placement, as well as their million-selling cover of
Gene McDaniels’ “Compared To What.” By 1970s,
McCann had begun to put greater emphasis on his
vocal-work, and was an early experimenter of the
Rhodes electric piano and the Hohner clavinet,
which were exponentially growing in popularity. The
decade wasn’t McCann’s most commercially
successful, but it did render a slew of
funky R&B obscurities.
Among these obscurities was 1972’s Talk To The
People, McCann’s 6th release with Atlantic
Records. Very much a record of its time, Talk To
The People features seven tracks of earthy soul,
funky jazz, and occasional social commentary,
featuring McCann at the top of his keys game.
Whether laying his gritty croon over covers of
Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder classics, or paired
with solid contributions by Donald Dean on drums,
Keith Loving on guitar, James Rowser on bass, and
Buck Clarke on percussion, most jazz aficionados
and historians will agree that Talk To The People is
an underrated 70s gem, and not to be
glossed over.
