Image: 1615543 After making waves a few years back via his Potatohead People project
(with AstroLogical) and co-producing Illa J’s critically acclaimed self titled
LP, Vancouver based playboy & producer Nick Wisdom steps out from
behind the boards to deliver his first solo release for Bastard Jazz.
The “Intimate Strangers” EP mines deep into Nick’s proclivities for
disco, hip-hop, and house flavours. “Good Times” kicks things off with a

and vocals courtesy of Mr. Wisdom himself. “Feelin’ Alright” heads into
outerspace disco territory with cosmic synths, walking bass, and sultry
vocals courtesy of Reva Devito (HW&W, Kaytranada). On the flipside
“Don’t Tell” brings in some 80s boogie vibes with downlow vocals from
San Francisco’s K-Maxx, while “Rock The Cash Bar” is an instrumental
party rocking hip-hop jam sounding like a modern day Showbiz & AG.

Illa J – Home (LP+MP3)
Friday, May 19th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Illa J – Home (LP+MP3)

Image: 1610081 Illa J takes us on a trip to his hometown Detroit with his third solo album HOME

following his self titled LP, Illa J sometimes known as “John Regal” (born October 13,1986 in Detroit, Michigan) is a singer, songwriter, rapper, producer, multi instrumentalist. He takes us on a trip to his hometown Detroit with his third solo album HOME. His last LP successfully took Illa J out of his brother and hiphop legend J Dilla‘s shadow to show he is in his own lane. Yet, Yancey still felt as though he was in a box labeled rapper. Teaming up with producer Calvin Valentine, who entirely produced the album, HOME is Illa J‘s first album to properly showcase the full extent of his vocal range to put him in the singer-songwriter conversation. The listener can feel the soulfulness of this LP through Illa J‘s singing and Valentines‘ smooth production.

On „Sam Cook“ which is an ode to Illa J‘s father who ghostwrote for Motown, Yancey dives into his falsetto that is reminiscent of D‘Angelo, Bilal and Al Green. While keeping his focus on singing. Illa J sprinkles the album with rap verses. On „7Mile“ his vocals smoothly float over the more raw/alternative cut laid by Valentine. The album title track „Home“ completes his album and solidifies Illa J‘s artistry as a well rounded singer who can rap.

Illa J is a solo artists, former member of legendary group Slum Village. Active in the music industry since 2006 in L.A and Detroit, Illa J has released two solo albums, 2008’s Yancey Boys via Delicious Vinyl and 2015’s self titled LP Illa J via Bastard Jazz Records. In 2014, while refocusing on his solo career and stepping out of Slum Village, Illa J relocated to Montreal for a fresh new start. He has since entrenched himself in the Canadian music scene by collaborating with some of Canada’s finest emcees and producers including Moka Only, Potatohead People and Kaytranada.

His recent collaborations have been with jazz legend, Robert Glasper in concert and on record for his Miles Davis tribute project Everything’s Beautiful. Illa J also had the privilege to collaborate with hip hop legend Phife Dawg from ATCQ on his double LP nutshell. Other features include Slum Village’s critically acclaimed album YES & famed UK producer Tom Misch Beat Tape 2. Available from 30.06.2017

Chico Mann & Captain Planet – Night Visions (2LP)
Thursday, January 19th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Chico Mann & Captain Planet – Night Visions (2LP)

Image: 1608323 Night Visions is a collection of stories which dance alive over an infectious blend of Afro-Latin rhythms and contemporary dancefloor beats. Told by a variety of characters, drawn from the vibrant imagination of Chico Mann, these stories take place in an endless night, where we move through dimly lit clubs, jungle moonlight, pitch black desert plains, and the internal shadows of personal darkness. While the characters often stumble and search blindly in the dark, the persistent presence of a distant light provides an underlying direction and hopefulness to all the songs. Captain Planet’s production, informed by his regular crowd-moving DJ sets, keeps the album sounding effortlessly danceable & contemporary. Meanwhile, Chico’s vocals have an instant classic appeal, hinting at old Cuban rumba and vintage Afrobeat LP’s. The two are aided by guest vocals from regular collaborators Kendra Morris & Brit Manor, as well as some talented friends who contributed additional horns, guitar & marimba.

Night Visions highlights the creative symbiosis of two of the biggest names in contemporary alternative Latin sounds. The result is a truly unique album that speaks as much to listeners who don’t understand Spanish as it does to old abuelos. The feelings and rhythms that flow through these songs are universal, appealing to hearts and hips all around the world.

Chico Mann has created a musical time machine that simultaneously fuses the sounds of 1970s Afrobeat, 1980s Freestyle and Afro Cuban in a hybrid beast of culture and tone. Its the big ‘what if’ Freestyle, Afrobeat & Afro Cuban converged and hit the mainstream for an army of Chicos to pick up where Stevie B, TKA, George Lamond, Sa-Fire, Information Society, Noel, and Cult Jam, and Expose left off. Chico’s choruses of multi-layered vocals with funky guitar lines helps to cool off the heat created between the bass and rhythm… creating a unique conversation of color and value that pays homage to the past but raises the bar for the future.

Captain Planet is a world travelling DJ & music producer who blends global roots music styles with forward-thinking hip-hop, dancehall and electronic beats. After cutting his teeth in the competitive New York City club scene, he went on to host a popular radio show on WNYU Radio, and started the globally renowned music blog www.MixtapeRiot.com. He has released 3 full-length albums featuring his trademark “Gumbo Funk” sound on Bastard Jazz Recordings, and can be heard on the soundtracks to multiple popular TV shows such as “Orange Is The New Black”, “Entourage” and “CSI:NY” to name a few. In 2016, his song “Un Poquito Mas” featuring Chico Mann was featured in a major Honda ad campaign and passed a million plays on Spotify. The success of that song, in conjunction with Chico Mann relocating to Los Angeles, encouraged the two artists to focus on a full collaboration album together.

Colm K – Time

Image: 1606522 R2 present the new single from Colm K.

1. Time feat Aisling Kelly
2. Time Again
3. Uncertainty

Irish DJ & Producer Colm K has been playing at his renowned monthly “Sunday Times!” for seven years and running, but began his interaction with the international music world after his selection for the Red Bull Music Academy in Rome 2003. This resulted in producing studio projects for Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, (including remix duties with Mr Scruff) and Brian Deady, as well as releasing music on Brownswood and Bastard Jazz. He’s also been featured on Ransome Note, Stamp The Wax and a Boiler Room mix.

Having appeared on R2 Records for Seven Davis Jr’s comp “Future Society” we are happy to announce Colm K has produced an exquisite E.P. for us, each of the three tracks showcasing his versatility.

“Time” is a down tempo soul burner, the beats tight, the production crisp and the vocals of Aisling Kelly riding beautifully.

“Time Again” picks things up with a mid-tempo house track to melt any dance floor. Floating melodies cut with Colm’s signature crisp beats creating a steady growing soulful beast.

Finally “Uncertainty” sees Colm revert to funk break territory, but this time flips it with soulful chords, evolving into a delicious deep groove and synth workout before gently bringing us back down to Earth.

Various – Tempo Dreams Vol.4
Saturday, March 5th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Tempo Dreams Vol.4

Image: 1602788 The last couple of years have been huge for Pomo , going from a relatively obscure Canadian producer to releasing his debut EP on HW&W, remixing for the likes of Janet Jackson and Mark Ronson, producing “Am I Wrong?” on Anderson Paak’s debt album and touring the globe with Disclosure as their opening act.

Bastard Jazz has commissioned Pomo to be next in line for the fourth volume of their “Tempo Dreams” compilation series, following on the heels of the acclaimed Soul Clap compiled Vol. 3. As with other Tempo Dreams records, Pomo has curated a slick and well polished album full of exclusive tracks from friends and collaborators such as Lindsay Lowend, Aloka, Exmag, Syre, Daniel Crawford, FVLCRVM and more. Touching on the shimmering nudisco sound, plodding deep electronic vibes, funky instrumental hip-hop, and even a hint of drum ‘n’ bass, Tempo Dreams Vol. 4 takes it’s rightful place in the series as one of the most forward thinking compilations showcasing emerging young talent. Available from 22.04.2016

Pomo – Blue Soda (Parts 1 & 2)
Wednesday, January 13th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Pomo – Blue Soda (Parts 1 & 2)

Image: 1601651 The last couple of years have been huge for Pomo, going from a relatively obscure Canadian producer to releasing his debut EP on HW&W, remixing for the likes of Janet Jackson and Mark Ronson, and touring the globe with Disclosure as their hand-picked opening act.

Bastard Jazz has commissioned Pomo to be next in line for the fourth volume of their “Tempo Dreams” compilation albums, following on the heels of the hotly contested Soul Clap compiled Vol. 3. As with other Tempo Dreams records, we tease it out with a limited 7″ release with tracks from the compiler made specifically for the Tempo Dreams album.

“Blue Soda” (Part 1) – Pomo’s first original release since his EP in November of 2014 is a typical, rollicking Pomo new disco joint with stabbing synths, chopped vocal samples and an irresistible bassline. Part 2 on the flip-side delivers more of the same, with a little more of an introspective twist. Part 2 is exclusive to the 7″ only and won’t be on the album. Available from 19.02.2016

Image: 1601343 You know Soul Clap likes it funky, so of course we’ve been digging all the new funk music coming out recently. This interest motivated us in compiling “Tempo Dreams Volume 3” for Bastard Jazz Records. In doing so we were able to gather so many amazing songs that they didn’t all fit on the compilation. Now using this inspiration as an invitation to start a new series on Soul Clap Records we’re excited to introduce NEW DIRECTIONS IN FUNK.

NEW DIRECTIONS IN FUNK is a colored 7″ vinyl only series that features future funk from Soul Clap and our freaky friends from around the world. Inspired by labels we love like Cherries, Voltaire, PPU, Hot Shot & Omega Supreme, NEW DIRECTIONS IN FUNK pushes the boundaries of what funk music can be, while always paying homage to the roots.

First in the series is a double A sider (aka music so hot we can’t choose!). On the A side is “Peep This”, a track we did with George Clinton/Funkadelic which features Crew Love members Nick Monaco and Greg Paulus along with G Koop! And do you remember “So Fine”, the Paradise Garage classic by Howard Johnson? Well he’s featured on the B side’s “Slow Motion”, a collaboration with Bay Area innovator Brian Ellis’ Reflection project!

For this album, the label has tapped Soul Clap, the Boston bred, international ambassadors of all things funky. Potatohead People – Big Luxury
Friday, April 10th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Potatohead People – Big Luxury

Image: 1595339 Working on opposite sides of the landmass we call Canada, Vancouver/Montreal duo Potatohead People (producers Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical) have been making waves for quite some time with their signature jazzy boom-bap meets boogie inside the bassbin vibes. Called a “formidable tandem” by OkayPlayer, their sounds have been championed early on by the likes of Kaytranada, Soulection, Nightmares on Wax, Pomo, Exmag, Big Boi, and Phife Dawg. After a few early releases on Vancouver based netlabel Jellyfish Recordings, Brooklyn’s Bastard Jazz reissued their 2012 landmark Kosmichemusik EP and pressed a 7″ released on Valentine’s Day 2013. The association landed their song “Back To My Sh*t” (featuring Frank Nitty of Frank’n’Dank) on a Powerade produced LeBron James documentary and Nick and Astro began working on a debut LP for Bastard Jazz, presented here.

Big Luxury draws from influences disparate as classic jazz, prog rock, disco 90’s hop, DJ Shadow-Era downtempo beats, alongside modern influences like the Brainfeeder crew and new electronic sounds coming out of Nick Wisdom’s adopted hometown of Montreal. What’s resulted is a finely honed, extra buttery album that effortly glides between tempos, but never loses the mood. The album also features a whole host of guest vocalists – J Dilla’s younger brother Illa J, legendary Canadian MC Moka Only, New Zealand’s Sorceress, and Amalia all provide contributions to the sounds within. Big Luxury is a velvety ride through vibes and a magnificent debut for these talented young Canadians.

Tracklisting
1. Intro (No Devices)
2. Blue Charms
3. Explosives (feat. Illa J & Moka Only)
4. Messenger (feat. Sorceress & Mosaic)
5. Palmreader
6. Snapbax
7. Luxury
8. Luv Ya (feat. Amalia)

Chris Read – The Magic Is Gone
Thursday, February 20th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Chris Read – The Magic Is Gone

Image: 1587194 Chris Read returns on Breakin Bread with a slice of uptempo vocal funk dancefloor magic. This is Chris’s fifth 7inch single for the label. Ever exploring new territory and showing his versatility, Chris follows his 2013 throwback rap smash ‘Rap Tradition’ with a pacey Hammond funk number aimed squarely at the dancefloor. The latest offering taken from Chris’s forthcoming long player ‘Small Steps’, we expect big things from ‘Magic is Gone’.

SIDE A – THE MAGIC IS GONE
A gritty funk number full of live energy, this track showcases the growth of Chris Read as more than just a producer. Featuring Speedometer vocalist Myles Sanko, ‘Magic Is Gone’ delivers a soulful vocal over an energetic drum break underpinned with a funky b-line and topped with catchy horns, memorable guitar licks and a killer Hammond solo courtesy of collaborators The So Much Soul Players (named after Chris’s London contemporary Funk & Soul night)*.

SIDE B – THE MAGIC IS GONE (HAMMOND REPRISE)
In what is now becoming a Breakin Bread tradition and a nod to many classic 7”s of yesteryear, the flipside features an instrumental edit. The ‘Hammond Reprise’ follows in the footsteps of the A-Side, replacing Myle’s soulful vocal with the throaty Hammond which dominates the second half of the original version to create a full pace Hammond work out, topped with crowd rousing vocal ad-libs.

*The So Much Soul Players are a collection of musicians with whom Chris has collaborated on other recording projects brought together for this release and include Rob Barron on Keys, Giles Barratt on guitar and Joe Egan on horns. The digital version also features an instrumental mix and a great remix from Germany’s ‘Renegades of Jazz’.

BIOGRAPHY
Chris Read, a collector of Hip Hop, Funk, Soul, Boogie and related Jazz based music since the late 80s, came to prominence in the mid 90s as a result of a high profile 10 year residency at Midlands Hip Hop and Funk institution ‘Substance’ (one of the largest nights of its kind in the UK). Launching his production career a little over a decade ago, Chris has released music for the cream of Europe’s independent labels including Different Drummer, Push the Fader, Bastard Jazz and BBE. Recent remixes and collaborations include DJ Spinna, Oddisee, Lizzy Parks and many others. He’s also a prominent DJ on the UK and European scene spinning highly crafted sets honed over years of DJing and producing mix CDs.

Never one to rest, Chris’s 2014 release schedule is already packed with two BBE albums in the pipeline, a multitude of high profile remixes and of course Chris’s debut Long Player for Breakin Bread ‘Small Steps’ from which this single is taken due for release in the Spring.

Extra Medium – Extra Medium EP
Thursday, August 1st, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Extra Medium – Extra Medium EP

Image: 1581190 Buscrates 16-Bit Ensemble and Sam Champ came up together in Pittsburgh, PA, digging through the jazz and soul sections in the legendary Jerry’s Records and then running home to sample and chop up their purchases in an effort to impress one another. This friendly competition continued after Sam relocated to Brooklyn in 2001. Buscrates now plays keys for boogie-funk group East Liberty Quarters (ELQ), regularly DJs in Pittsburgh, produced remixes for artists like Marc Mac, and is featured on the latest Bastard Jazz release, Tempo Dreams Volume 1. Sam has held down various DJ residencies in New York City, released a massively popular D’Angelo Live mixtape in conjunction with Okayplayer, and produced an unofficial remix album featuring D’Angelo (again), Erykah Badu, Usher, and others.

Buscrates and Sam formed Extra Medium to debut Rediscovered, a full-length album based on samples from a single jazz record. The tracks were compiled over the course of several years. The duo just recently enlisted some of their favorite vocalists to contribute to the project.

“This project is incredible! Feeds my soul. Just what the game needs right now.” (DJ Spinna)
“Smoothed out dope! Need this for LA! Need this! Okay there is your quote.. Now can u send me ?? 🙂 Would love to play this tonight on KCRW.. Good stuff man.” (Anthony Valadez)
“Recalling the rugged, soulful production of the Soulquarians, Dilla and D?Angelo, Extra Medium?s new EP is a smooth, head-nodding introduction to this dope, new duo. Sam Champ?s extensive knowledge of music has made him a regular contributor to my mixtapes for a reason, and I especially love the concept here: pulling every sample exclusively from the A and B-sides of a single piece of vinyl! Dandy Teru – Adventures
Thursday, June 6th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Dandy Teru – Adventures

Image: 1579652 “Adventures” is the debut full-length album by French producer Dandy Teru. His opus is chock-full of notable guest vocalists and MC’s and also includes remixes by Tall Black Guy, Belgian production duo Monkey Robot and his partner-in-crime Quiet Dawn.

In Dandy Teru’s own words:
“Adventures is a journey. On every side of the project, this opus is an incredible journey into a thema, a group of people (guests and co-directors) and friends, and a travel alone inside my own psychology. It’s a witness testimony of a global state of mind, with the thema as the first stone of it: dreams.” The album is an eclectic mix of downtempo, Nu Jazz, “Beat” music, Soul, House and Hip-Hop. Featuring up and coming talent such as Sami K who laces the track Burned with his blues-inflected vocals, Chicago MC Rita J on Wake Up Now and Sarah Gessler on Fragile Things , alongside renowned and well-known MC’s Moka Only , Ty and Count Bass D . Hailing from Orleans, France, Dandy Teru wears many hats, multi-media artist, artistic director, radio host and selector on Laid Back Radio , but foremost as a music producer. He’s been slowly making a name for himself yet still somewhat working in the shadows, with connections and contributions to a slew of young and burgeoning French
artists in the Hip-Hop scene such as Tchad Unpoe, Pumpkin, Supafuh, and fellow producers Monkey Robot and Quiet Dawn . His production aesthetic however hasn’t gone unnoticed with his inclusion in TBG ’s (Tall Black Guy ) Tempo Dreams compilation for Bastard Jazz featuring new
producers of note as well as a track on the Do The Dilla 2012 album.

Various – Tom Furse Digs

Image: 1598529 Tom Furse Digs – Nineteen exotic musical gems from the Southern Music Library.

Tom Furse of The Horrors has long been known as a man of taste and distinction, so it comes as no surprise that he should follow in the steps of such musical adventurers as Luke Vibert and Barry 7 to create a collection of library music that is both esoteric and charming.

All tracks were picked from the Southern Library Of Recorded Music, a little known music library with a breezy and surreal sound. Like a Rousseau painting there is that sense of the exotic but also something ‘other’. That’s not to say it’s not the ideal beach soundtrack for a person of discerning taste, but it could just as easily be the haunting backdrop to an opiated evening or deep reverie.

The tracks were recorded between 1968 And 1979 and feature some of the library greats like Nino Nardini, Roger Roger and Johnny Hawksworth but also more obscure composers such as Anthony Mawer and Harihar Rao. Although the songs were recorded at different times, in different places, there is an unmistakable feeling that sets them apart from other library music. This is the also first time many of the tracks have been made widely available and great care was taken to find the best available recordings.

But why not let Tom have the last word and tell us what he digs and why.

‘Oh the curious world of library music, so tempting in the record shop and often so disappointing on the turntable. However there are gems here to be found, shining and unique oddities, the bastard sounds of pop fancy.

The Southern Library of Recorded Music, to give it’s full name, largely sits away from what has become known as the ‘library sound’. Instead of sample-friendly beats and mutated versions of chart hits, there is something here that’s all together different. A world of exotica-tinged jazz beat, calling up images of of sandy days and smoky nights in tropical climates. Despite the geographical and cultural differences of the composers featured, there is undeniably ‘a sound’ here all of it’s own. Admittedly this is after a lot of filtering on my part, but such was my task and no stone was left unturned to find the diamonds amongst the rough. ‘Digs’ is my take on the Southern library, and I hope you enjoy it’.

TRACKLISTING: Side A – 1. Beachcomber – Chris Gunning, 2. Several Shades Of Blue – Johnny Hawksworth, 3. Bass Guitar Stroll – Johnny Scott, 4. Poltergeist – Roger Roger, 5. Soothsayer – Nino Nardini, 6. Everglades – Barry Forgie, 7. Great Organ Beat – Johnny Scott, 8. Temple Courtyard – Harihar Rao. Side B – 1. For Joan To Dance To – Eugene Cines, 2.
