Voodoocuts / SoulBrigada – Matasuna Records pres. Afreaka!
Thursday, June 2nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Voodoocuts / SoulBrigada – Matasuna Records pres. Afreaka!

Image: 1604425 Voodoocuts kicks off the A-Side with ‘Kelja’, a raw 70s afro-funk bomb from the Ivory Coast. The American-funk inspired tune features a funky bassline & killer organ vibe, mingled with a dirty, raw saxophone line and James Brown influenced vocals. Voodoocuts’ rework turns the track into a serious dancefloor banger! In ‘The Tortoise Loop’ Voodoocuts blends an infectious groove with pounding drum breaks and hypnotic vocals. A hot afro-latin joint not to be missed!

On the flip SoulBrigada takes things to a disco tip. ‘Hustleman’ is a stunning afrofunk & disco gem from West Africa. The second track ‘Madera’ is an afro-disco gem with a compelling Cape Verdean groove. SoulBrigada rearranged the tracks, added drums, samples and effects building a brigde between past and present – without ever losing its original organic vibe. Two essential tunes for your record bag!

Tortoise – The Catastrophist Tour Book (Ltd.CD+Buch)
Tuesday, August 22nd, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Tortoise – The Catastrophist Tour Book (Ltd.CD+Buch)

Image: 1611549 Photographer Andrew Paynter on the project :
This book came about from the long term relationship I’ve had with
both this band and their label, Thrill Jockey. I frst came to meet some of the
members through mutual friend, Tommy Guerrero. Over the years I started
to contribute occasionally as a creative collaborator. The band used several
of my photographs for their ‘Lazarus Taxon’ packaging. Then, in 2010 they
commissioned me to both direct a music video from ‘Beacons of Ancestorship’
and to also art direct & contribute images from my ‘SF Lines’ work. The band
also used other images for additional 12 inch records and then seven years
went by. I did think often about the idea of going on the road with them, but
was patiently awaiting a return to the stage, as they took a long break between
records. So the idea to do something long form became a reality. Once it
was set, I organized to jump on the road with the band to cover the entire
West Coast of North America and with an addition of a trip to Arcosanti,
Arizona. I brought three cameras, Leica M6, Hasselblad X-Pan and a Pentax
67. I only shot b&w flm and I kept my ideas simple and did my best to not
force situations, but to simply capture them from the perspective of an insider.
My craving to shoot from the hip in a reportage fashion was fnally fulflled on
this 10 day project. I’m proud to say, this is my very frst book.
Tortoise’s Douglas McCombs on touring and the live experience:
Twenty fve years ago in the early days of Tortoise there was a
perception that we were a recording project. This perception was probably
exacerbated by the fact that we barely played any live shows in the frst three
years. The reality is that we were slow in getting our band up and running due
to a variety of logistical circumstances, internal and external.
Performing live was always a priority and a prime motivator in forming the
band in the frst place. By the time opportunities arose for us to tour in a self
sustaining manner we couldn’t have been happier. This is what we wanted to
do, and thankfully the audience showed up.
Presenting our slightly unconventional material was occasionally a challenge.
We had to lug around more equipment than your average band and often
had to deal with temperamental synthesizers and samplers that would fail at
inopportune moments. Still, it was exciting and very rewarding.
These days a band at our level makes most of our living by playing live shows.
It’s no secret that record sales are substantially lower than they used to be. At
the same time we are all maintaining families that we didn’t have twenty years
ago which makes organizing a tour exponentially more diffcult. Still, every
time we step on a stage we are trying to invest ourselves in the performance as
much as possible so that we can give the audience a unique experience. We
want you to know that we consider it a privilege to play our music for you.

Simply put, Tortoise has spent nearly 25 years making
music that defes description. While the Chicagobased instrumental quintet has nodded to dub, rock,
jazz, electronica and minimalism throughout its
revered and in?uential seven-album discography, the
resulting sounds have always been distinctly, even
stubbornly, their own.
“Chicago’s Tortoise is a genre unto itself: cited as a
progenitor of post-rock, and clearly indebted to its
home town’s history of improvisers and fusionists,
Tortoise is an American underground institution.”

Image: 1609900 “Here it is… a project I unofficially had done since 06’. It started when Dilla passed February of 06’. To cope with the death of my unofficial “musical mentor” & favorite producer, I started making “donuts,” uncontrollably. I never planned to release any of the material out of respect for Dilla & his craft. I’ve shared some of the music with others, in which they would constantly ask me to hear it, so I decided to put a lil sumthing together and make it official. JUST FOR YA’LL. This is a collection of beats I made in 06’. Some “donuts” style, some just around that era of 14KT beats. “Now & Laters” was always a favorite candy of mine. I used to go to Mindells Pharmacy in Ypsi back in the day and buy ALL of them. Sadly I even stole change from my grandma’s (RIP) purse for them. Ironically, I fell back in love with “Now and Laters” around this era. Enjoy.” – 14KT

Image: 1607115 Galletas Calientes Records proudly present the “Palenque Records
AfroColombia Remix” series. Since the mid 90’s, Palenque Records
have been actively promoting the Afro-Colombian music and
culture. Palenque Records’ original artists, such as Son Palenque,
Abelardo Carbono, Sexteto Tabala, Batata y Su Rumba Palenquera,
Colombiafrica The Mystic Orchestra, are living testimonies of how
much Africa has influenced traditional music in Colombia. They
have developed a remarkable culture, collaborating with African
musicians such as Diblo Dibala or Bopol Mansiamina. Most of them
are considered to be the precursors of “Champeta”, a unique musical
genre setting its roots in the West-African Soukous and folklore.
This music is the origin of the very interesting “picó” culture of the
Caribbean coast of Colombia.
The Afro-Colombian legacy is also represented by other artists such
as Gualajo, known for their marimba playing skills, typical instrument
of the “Currulao” music from the pacific coast of Colombia. The
purpose of this remix series is to pay a tribute to Palenque Records
who are celebrating 20 years of musical activism in 2016, by
releasing some versions of the original songs, produced by the finest
artists from today’s worldwide “Global bass” scene.
Remixes and edits from Dj Sabo (U.S.), Rafael Aragón (FR), Motin
(DE), Ghetto Kumbé (CO), and Solo Moderna (NL) are featured on
this first volume.

Friday, February 5th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Kev Beadle Presents Best of Inner City Records

Image: 1601551 Kev Beadle is back on BBE with his new compilation Best Of Inner City Records.

Created by industry legend, MMO Music Group founder and true
godfather of karaoke (but that’s another story) Irv Kratka alongside
producer Eric Kriss, Inner City Records was formed in 1976. During its
decade or so in existence, the label put together a formidable catalogue
of jazz music and was voted Record Label Of The Year in 1979 by the
International Jazz Critics Poll. As well as ‘classic jazz’, the label also
gave a platform to more avant-garde material and dabbled in the
emerging ‘jazz fusion’ sounds of the day. Fondly remembered by jazz
lovers everywhere, the label boasts a particularly fervent fan-base in
London, where many of its releases found favour in the underground
dance clubs of Soho and Convent Garden. Fittingly enough, London DJ
and tastemaker Kev Beadle is the man chosen to put together this very
special compilation of Inner City’s finest moments. Having previously
curated projects for labels such as Blue Note and Cadet, Kev has dug
deep in the crates to emerge with this gem of an album.
From the soaring vocals of the jazz-fusion classic ‘The Other World’ by
Judy Roberts to the irrepressible dance-floor fire of Eddie Jefferson’s
‘Jeannine’, ‘The Best Of Inner City Records’ serves as a wonderful and
eclectic introduction to a label which is rightly remembered with a level of
affection which borders on reverence.

Ernie Leaner added M-Pac! as a sub-label to their One-derful! label, they
were revered figures on Chicago’s Record Row and beyond. They distributed
material from labels like Motown and Stax and they attracted top talent. It
wasn’t uncommon for a WVON DJ to help the Leaners sign their newest
discovery, or for their singers, musicians, songwriters, or producers to have
Chess or Motown on their resumes. The Leaner family were among the
most important black businessmen of music’s golden era, yet much of their
history has only been superficially documented until now.
Between 1962 and 1971, the One-derful! family of labels released 180+
45s of stunning soul, funk, and gospel. Over two years of painstaking
research and work, including countless hours spent cataloging, transferring,
and mastering 250 of the label’s tapes, has contributed to an amazingly
extensive reissue collection. In addition, some of the world’s leading experts
have contributed liner notes and interviewed virtually every known surviving
artist, producer, and otherwise involved party. In total, the six volumes of the
One-derful! Collection include 12 LPs/6 CDs with 147 tracks, 57 which were
never issued, and 144 pages of 12” x 12” liner notes stuffed full of rare and
never before seen photos and memorabilia. Spanning 1962 to 1971, these
compilations bring forth a wealth of overlooked and never before heard
recordings and history.

Kalbata & Mixmonster (Ft. Puddy Roots) – Inna Skateland / Skateland Dub
Saturday, January 24th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Kalbata & Mixmonster (Ft. Puddy Roots) – Inna Skateland / Skateland Dub

Image: 1594963 The contemporary reggae world was rocked and happily shocked when Freestyle Records unleashed Kalbata & Mixmonster’s Congo Beat The Drum album in 2014. The wholly analogue, old school production combined with the classic Jamaican vocalists featured such as Little John, Major Mackerel, Echo Minott had everyone from Toddla T to Robert Elms absolutely raving about the albums genuine roots and culture feel.

And now Freestyle presents another single, Inna Skateland, that features legend Puddy Roots on vocals, whose voice is brilliantly well suited to the dub heavy, reverb laden music. The flip side, Skateland Dub, is a brand new track, not featured on the album and is 100% exclusive to this brand new release!

Wie bereits auf dem gefeierten Mixtape “Realität” deutlich zu vernehmen, nimmt die frühere Prostituierte aus Frankfurt am Main kein Blatt vor den Mund und berichtet aus […]

Goldband Records played a key role in documenting and shaping of musical traditions, tastes, and trends, both regionally and internationally since 1944. The focus of the Goldband catalog is certainly set on Country & Western, Swamp Pop, and Cajun music. However, from the 1960s until the early 1970s Goldband, and it’s sub-label ANLA Records, released […]

Reaktionen:
“I love the funk u sent over” – Matt Black (Coldcut / Ninja Tune)

Posted in Magazine, News | Comments Off on Debütalbum des gehypten Newcomers eRRdeKa auf Prinz Pis Keine Liebe Records

Dies lag unter anderem an Eddie Shuler’s Philosophie “…giving a man a chance, otherwise, how would you discover what somebody could do?” die dem Label letztendlich den Ruhm brachte.
