“Techno that tumbles towards ecstasy, courtesy of Matthew Dear.” Pitchfork on Audion’s ‘Suck*sh’ 2005

Matthew Dear’s Audion project stands proudly at the intersection between art and hedonism, realised over a decade long dedication to powerful and relevant dance music. Growing out of the vibrant DIY Detroit underground, Audion and his contemporaries were free to feed o* the energy reverberating from UK and European dance*oors, but singular in their desire to create their own sound and spirit. An Audion release is techno in it’s purest sense – whether it’s pushing the bombastic limits, spinning the dance*oor out of control or elegantly toying with just a few sonic elements.
‘Alpha’ is Audion’s *rst artist album in 10 years and comes at the end of a period of fevered activity. The collective body of work standing as a marker in time and a de*ning moment in
the life of the artist. Drowning out the noise of the outside world, ‘Alpha’ was a puzzle pieced together sonically in the shadows and wildly brought to life in a matter of weeks. The
artwork for ‘Alpha’ has again been realised by Will Calcutt, Dear’s long time collaborator, who has a visual plan for the music that matches the sonic vision, completing the *nal
critical piece of the puzzle.

In 1997 Alpha‘s debut album “Come From Heaven” on fellow Bristol residents Massive Attack’s Melankolic label managed to operate a delicate synthesis between the pop classicism of the 1960s and the modernity of contemporary productions. In this album, Alpha – made up of Corin Dingley and Andy Jenks – alluded to the greatest songwriters and arrangers of the past (Lee Hazlewood, Scott Walker, Jimmy Webb or Burt Bacharach), without ever yielding to the facilities of sympathetic nostalgia or retro-futurism. Quickly the list of their admirers looked like a who-is-who of the international pop scene: David Bowie, Radiohead, Pulp, or Madonna all raved about “Come From Heaven”.

After the release of their remix album “Pepper” in 1998 and a European tour with Massive Attack, it took Alpha three years to return with their second album, “The Impossible Thrill”. There Andy and Corin continued with the work started on “Come From Heaven” by enriching their musical palette with organic sounds and mixing strings to the most relevant samples …

Reggae became a worldwide music phenomenon thanks to Bob Marley. But if this now universal style of music has become the voice of the voiceless, the CNN of ghettos worldwide, and one of the main music genres on the African continent, it’s also thanks to Alpha Blondy, messenger of reggae music in the Ivory Coast. Alpha has been in Jamaica to record his music since his very first album “Cocody Rock”, released in 1984, partially produced by the famous Jamaican beatmaker Clive Hunt.

“It was Clive, a Jamaican, who told me I should sing in African language and create my own style. We went to the Hope Road studio with The Wailers”, Alpha remembers, “and in the nick of time we made “Cocody Rock”. It was mixed the next day”.

This time, Alpha chose the ex-Wailer Tyrone Downie and the ‘riddim twins’ Sly & Robbie to work on his new album “Jah Victory”. The story of this record is the story of a certain idea of faith. Alpha Blondy’s faith in his music, his destiny, his God …

Glen Porter – Mr.Vampire & The Deadly Walkers
Thursday, October 5th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Glen Porter – Mr.Vampire & The Deadly Walkers

Image: 1615539 Within the mind of Glen Porter exists Mr. Vampire and The Deadly Walkers. Glen’s latest album on The Content Label tells the sprawling, heartfelt tale of Mr. Vampire as he traverses the lonely desert with his Deadly Walkers. There’s a hint of lost love, and the melancholy feeling of a distant home and a far-off destination. Glen Porter realizes these memory movies with a stunning mixture of swirling psychedelia, springy electronic rhythms, and charred western guitar riffs. Recorded over the last few years in Huntington Beach, California, Mr. Vampire and The Deadly Walkers also reveals a strong visual element courtesy of collaborator Lucien Shapiro who designed the masks worn by the cryptic inhabitants of the album cover. As with previous releases, Glen Porter plays most of the instruments and this time he’s lending his husky voice as well. Other guests on Mr. Vampire and The Deadly Walkers include Chris Alfaro AKA Free The Robots (Alpha Pup Records) and vocalist Jessie Jones (Burger Records).

Eureka The Butcher – EUREKA
Friday, March 24th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Eureka The Butcher – EUREKA

Image: 1609396 Find a moment of clarity. ¡EUREKA! is the new LP on Alpha Pup
from Eureka the Butcher, a collection of intense, involved tracks with
deliberate arrangements and undefnable style.
Artists and searchers long for that “eureka” moment – an illuminated
instance of clear purpose and pure focus. For Eureka the Butcher,
as for many, the light follows the dark:
“I wrote a lot of this album at a very dark time in my life. I’d lost some
very important people in my life and I was at my most insecure,
personally and musically speaking. I had to remember where I come
from, who I’d learned from. I was at a low point and I hadn’t been
applying my culture and my upbringing to my everyday life. But
then I had a moment of clarity, and I started to feel better. I began
remembering that I come from an incredible place, raised and taught
by incredible people. Then I made some drastic decisions, including
moving to Los Angeles. I also had a eureka moment in terms of
work?ow and approach.”
The album’s multifaceted nature re?ects Eureka’s diverse inspiration.
Modular synth music of the ‘60s and ‘70s. LA’s rap, electronic, beat,
and bass music scene. Hardware used to create the album dominates
its sonic profle, from synthesizers and outboard compressors to live
percussion and tape delays.
“But the biggest in?uence is the music I grew up with: salsa,
psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and fusion. These types of
music taught me how to play… I gravitated towards what I know:
psychedelia, fast bass, synth lines, Caribbean rhythms and extremely
tight relationships between interwoven parts.”

Mast – Love And War
Saturday, March 18th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Mast – Love And War

Image: 1609335 Alpha Pup Records announces the release of MAST’s second
full length album Love and War_. Love and War_ is a highly
conceptual and deeply personal new work based on jazz trained
multi-instrumentalist MAST aka Tim Conley’s eventful love life
over the last 2 years.
Set up as a three Act Play structure (traditionally the Setup, the
Confrontation and the Resolution) Love and War_ is 17 intense
and unique compositions each ?owing into the next with recurring
musical themes or “characters.” Conley tells the story of (Act 1)
fnding love and the beauty and naivety that comes with exploring
something new, (Act 2) losing that love due to her substance
abuse, deception and Conley coping in unhealthy ways, (Act
3) learning to let go, heal and ultimately fnd a much deeper
lasting love. The tone Conley sets is sometimes sarcastic, other
times vulnerable and intimate, yet always musically intense and
profoundly visual.
Sonically, Love and War_ is mostly instrumental compositions
consisting of rousing electronic elements perfectly intertwined
with live guitar, keyboards, bass and drums. It’s performed and
produced by Conley, along with some of the world’s leading
Instrumentalists and vocalists. Keyboardist / producer Taylor
McFerrin appears hot off the release of his latest on Flying Lotus’
Brainfeeder label. Both LA transplants, Conley and McFerrin have
been friends and musical acquaintances for over 10 years since
their time in NYC and Philly during the early 2000s.
Composing and creating Love and War_ was an efficacious way
for Conley to heal and grow but he was very reluctant to share
such a personal story so transparently. Through this vulnerability,
he hopes that whatever anyone else’s Love and War_ story
happens to be, to learn their own life lessons, fnd the humor in it
and always trust in the most optimistic outcome.

Josef Leimberg – Astral Progressions
Friday, January 13th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Josef Leimberg – Astral Progressions

Image: 1607749 This fall, trumpeter and composer Josef Leimberg will launch his debut full-length Astral Progressions. Hitting vinyl prints and digital formats with the Alpha Pup Records jazz imprint World Galaxy, Astral Progressions is a powerful record in the canon of 21st century music. It also continues the momentum Leimberg achieved on the Kendrick Lamar Grammy Award-winning album To Pimp A Butterfly. A hybrid state of jazz fusion, world music, R&B and golden era hip hop instrumentalism. Josef Leimberg has created a rich tapestry of sound that fits right in with the resurgence of progressive music in the 2010’s, launching out on his own terms after an impressive career of guest work.

Leimberg gained a unique level of traction with his work on the multiple Grammy Award-winning Kendrick Lamar LP To Pimp A Butterfly. Credited under the LoveDragon moniker with Terrace Martin, his time with To Pimp A Butterfly only represents a small fragment of his accomplishments. His collaborative resume over the decades is astounding, consisting of production, writing and feature credits with Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu, Robin Thicke, Shafiq Husayn, Funkadelic, Freestyle Fellowship, Dr. Dre, Murs, King Tee, Suga Free, Saafir and Busdriver. These connections have undoubtedly spread life all over Astral Progressions.

Leimberg’s debut album features an array of innovators and game changers in modern progressive music. Kamasi Washington, Bilal, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Kurupt, Terrace Martin and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson are just a small list of the brilliant minds that make the Astral Progressions outing special. Many of the featured artists became with the LP through world renowned creator Shafiq Husayn. Leimberg would connect with various musicians associated to his camp through studio recordings, gigging and rehearsals, building on his compositions in a very organic and social way.

Kurupt connects with Astral Progression’s cosmic message unlike anything else he’s done before, lending his verbal talents over a cosmic west coast flavor. Georgia Anne Muldrow and Bilal add considerable weight as well, taking direction into spiritually tinged fusions of R&B and soul. The ending track pays special homage to Leimberg’s mother, including a recording of her speaking about the complexities of life and where we all fit into the bigger picture of this universe. To describe this record in full would take volumes of thought, bridged under the vision of Leimberg in every note and measure.

Leimberg takes the sonic power of Astral Progressions back to the origins of the ‘70s jazz fusion movement. Included is a superb Miles Davis cover of ‘Lonely Fire.’ Originally recorded and featured on the 1970s Miles Davis studio album Big Fun, Leimberg revamps the spiritually tinged piece with uptempo pocket driven drum work, flaring solo’s and a sense of heightened energy that transforms the chord arrangements of the original into something entirely new. Paul Livingston adds lush sitar, tambura and sarod, bringing the Indian influences shed on the original composition into the 21st century state of Leimberg’s vision. It’s a perfect summation of how organic, fluid and exotic the record is as a whole.

The artwork and design packaging pulls back to the narrative of prolific album cover work that enhanced many of the world’s most celebrated jazz fusion albums. Artwork created by Tokio Aoyama, the vibrant color schemes intertwine into deeply interwoven symbols, coalescing to form a powerful story before a single note is even heard.

Taking the influence his father, mother and communities of musicians around him, Astral Progressions is a record that summarizes the long lasting power of love through sound. Josef Leimberg is a part of the movement that’s creating new standards in the exploration of jazz and fusion. He is defining himself as a worthy composer and purveyor of the deep musical arts and Astral Progressions is just the beginning.

Miles Mosley – Uprising
Friday, December 16th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Miles Mosley – Uprising

Image: 1607752 MILES MOSLEY stepped into the light with magnetic force this year following the release of his new single ‘ABRAHAM’, garnishing critical acclaim from worldwide press such as NPR, The Guardian, BBC Radio, The FADER, and Bass Player Magazine. The Los Angeles-based upright bass virtuoso and composer has reached impressive professional heights in recent years, and his full length album has been eagerly anticipated.

Now the moment audiences across the globe have been waiting for is finally here: Miles Mosley announces the release of his album UPRISING, scheduled to be released worldwide on digital and vinyl formats on January 27, 2017. Ahead of the album release in January, Miles Mosley is offering the second single in the powerful track “Young Lion.” As the opening floodgates to UPRISING, “Young Lion” bursts with energy from every seam. Scorching horn lines, slick keys and a propulsive rhythm section unlike any other in modern music, the end of the track is supplanted with a mind-bending effects laced bass solo from Miles that shows why he’s one of the most respected bassists alive.

Scheduled to hit digital outlets September 16th, “Young Lion” is filled with gusto in lyric and music form. A perfect beginning to the story of UPRISING. It encapsulates the dynamic range of genres and expression that traces the rest of the album. UPRISING serves as his most personal and defining climb throughout his long-time career in the music industry. For Miles, it combines a deep love of songwriting with an innovative, truly one-of-a-kind ability on the Upright Bass. A balance he has worked decades to execute with precision, quality and taste.

UPRISING will release on the Alpha Pup Records sub-imprint World Galaxy, and features the collective Miles co-founded, the West Coast Get Down, a family of musicians he helped bring together during their formative years. The group have imprinted their stamp on the world unlike any other musical collective in recent times. Long-time manager and music collaborator Barbara Sealy, who has worked with the collective since they were in high school, co-produced the album with Tony Austin, shaping the content through the infamous KSL Sessions that produced over 150 finished compositions including those found on Kamasi Washington’s “The Epic.” As Miles describes, “I was the organizer, Tony Austin was the technical guru, Kamasi Washington was the wrangler, Ryan Porter was the heart, and our long-time manager Barbara Sealy was the safety net that made sure we were able to be in a safe, creative space. I began my record at Tony’s studio and transitioned to KSL to do Strings and Choir, yet once we were all in the groove more songs started crossing the finish line.”

Miles and company blend into a unified system of brilliant luminance through UPRISING. Kamasi Washington, Ryan Porter, Zane Musa, Dontae Winslow and the other L.A. horn players shout from the mountain tops, Brandon Coleman brings unrelenting funk on vintage keys, Cameron Graves displays his ethereal piano virtuosity, and Tony Austin holds it down with equal measure on drums and the production/engineering chair.

UPRISING is Miles’ personalized take on the musical journey of his life, and that of his West Coast Get Down family. It stands as an impressive record of deep conviction and technical prowess, following the influences he has gained from legends such as Otis Redding and Jimi Hendrix. Every lyric, rhythm, melody and harmony from UPRISING comes from the deepest reserves of Miles’ soul and the experiences he has endured over the last two decades in the music industry: “I wanted to create a work that was natural and intimate, but still maintained a sense of grandeur.” Miles explains. “As if you were best friends with a giant. The West Coast Get Down, the Strings, the Choir, I sought to utilize all of these elements together to create something with memorable melodies and a message to the people that we are here for them. We are and want to be the loudspeaker for their hearts.”

The album demonstrates Miles’ vision and scope, traversing through stunning vocal cadences and complex music arrangements with scorching horn lines, innovative bass solos, thought-provoking lyricism and an overall dynamic that bleeds with the lineage of the West Coast Get Down. It showcases tracks reminiscent of the best that pop, jazz, blues, funk and soul have to offer.

As a connecting factor from the beginning to the end, UPRISING walks the listener through the trials, tribulations and successes that Miles has experienced in the music industry, in a way that holds a mirror to the broader human experience of living in the modern age. It culminates in the triumphs that he and the West Coast Get Down gained in that process, honing their craft to perfection while uplifting a generation. Every song becomes a piece to the whole, highlighting Miles’ strengths as a composer, musician and lyrical seeker of truth.

The power of the West Coast Get Down’s voice has manifested in numerous ways, and Miles Mosley continues that journey for audiences in an entirely new way with UPRISING, the sound of this generation: “I have always loved the power of words, and what they make us feel. The word “UPRISING” is often used in moments in which a group of people witness their strength in numbers and band together to seize an opportunity. Not only are we living in a time where people all over the world in art and politics are recognizing their own power in numbers, but as a member of the West Coast Get Down it seems fitting that this new attention to our sound, and the impact we are capable of making across genres feels like our own UPRISING. This is my piece of our story.” – Miles Mosley

Crem’e – Close Up
Friday, July 15th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Crem’e – Close Up

Image: 1605096 Alpha Pup Records is ecstatic to announce the signing of Crem’e to
the family roster, scheduled to drop his debut full-length, Close Up, this
fall. Hitting both vinyl and digital formats upon release, Close Up is a
highly personalized vehicle of sound, created over the last few years as
a response to the passing of his mother. An expression of deep roots
and a chain of connections that shattered and spliced into millions of
parts, Close Up was designed as a means of self-healing and emotional
preservation. Crem’e summed up this transition in his life with the
following, “It’s like getting rid of a scar and then feeling naked without it.”
The musical language of Close Up jumps back and forth between a
soulful balance of beauty and pain. Channeling the state of influences
his family, friends and environments have afforded him growing up in LA.
Many organic elements are seamlessly melded together, brought together
through heavy usages of sampling, vocal layering and live recordings.
Crem’e further added, “Hip Hop has always been my foundation so it
was pretty seamless to create with samples even if it isn’t on the rap tip.”
His connection to the community of Los Angeles reflects his foundations
in both hip hop and electronica, taking an internship program with the
acclaimed Stones Throw Records and becoming an integral member of
the staff at Hi Fidelity Records. He’s constantly immersed in the music
community he supported for so many years prior, living the life of a
dedicated and passionate musician with everyday’s passing.
Close Up represents bright moments that glide through mental gardens
of sonic delight, molded into unique form in every measure, note and
texture. Simply put, Close Up is music that represents the very essence of
human connection and particularly the relationships Crem’e fostered over
the last two decades. It’s a closer examination of how we transition and
embody the themes of our tragedies and triumphs. Walking in the same
footsteps as the talented producers who have generated the communities
sprawling life through electronica and LA, Crem’e is a producer that
strives to achieve beauty in every detail with his music. This detail was
amplified with the mixing and mastering work of Alpha Pup label head
and Low End co-founder Daddy Kev at Cosmic Zoo.

Alix Perez & EPROM – Shades EP

Image: 1604351 Bass assassin dream team Alix Perez and EPROM debut Shades,
a commanding new EP on Alpha Pup Records. Fresh and dynamic,
the four-track release tickles the limbic system with gravity-distorting
bass and inspired hooks.
“The Serpent” cuts a swathe through the dance floor, underpinned
by an imperious, gritty bassline, replete with head-turning percussion
cuts. The back-swung “Chiron” cloaks a devious, neck-snapping riff
in warped melodic deviations.
Woozy percussion sits aloft an unsettled slab of electric bassweight
on“Minotaur”. And“Into Light”juxtaposes glory-era rave power chords
and arpeggios against echoes of g-funk and hyphy – culminating in
a tuned-up footwork flex-out.
Vivid. Searing. Groundbreaking. Shades is a gripping release by two
masters of their craft.

Anenon – Petrol
Friday, March 11th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Anenon – Petrol

Image: 1602879 Anenon is Brian Allen Simon, an artist and the founder of
the Non Projects record label. Constantly shedding the non-essential
in search of a deep and individualized core, Anenon’s music feels
potent and refined, yet still raw. His work reaches audiences through
speakers and venues where music is given serious consideration. An
experimental artist using contemporary tools, Brian mines the intersection
of electronics, jazz, improvisation and spiritual atmospherics.
Simon has performed internationally throughout Japan,
Europe and North America, sharing the stage with the likes of Morton
Subotnick, Julia Holter, Laurel Halo, Baths and many more. He is a
distinguished entrant of the 2011 Red Bull Music Academy and has
guest lectured at CalArts. Alongside multiple LP’s and EP’s released
on Non Projects, Simon has also released songs on Ghostly International,
Innovative Leisure and Brownswood. October saw Anenon’s debut
on Friends of Friends with the ‘Camembert’ EP, an effort that will be
followed with the ‘Petrol’ LP in 2016.
Born out of a series of improvisational sessions with friend
and collaborator Jon-Kyle Mohr, Anenon’s ‘Petrol’ is an album about
his native city of Los Angeles, but not the Los Angeles you know. It’s
a city built as much upon the frenzied kinetic energy of its freeways
as its moments of thoughtful, early morning solitude. In Anenon’s
mind, an Angeleno is “one who understands the beauty of distance
and the consistencies of irregularity” and those juxtapositions can be
found throughout ‘Petrol’, a spacious album that needs to be lived in
to be believed. Those juxtapositions extend to the sonic makeup of
‘Petrol’, from the tactile bliss of opener “Body” to the album closing
title track’s climactic bombast. Out March 4 on Friends of Friends,
‘Petrol’ is the culmination of years of work and a deeply refined sensibility,
a combination that seems to fit both label and artist like a glove.

Tracklist:
1. Body
2. Lumina
3. Once
4. CXP
5. Mouth
6. Hinoki
7. Machines
8. Panes
9. Petrol

Key Points:
• Support for ‘Petrol’ from The Wire, Pitchfork, LA Times, RBMA, Noisey,
Fader, Mixmag, Exclaim, Clash
• Red Bull Music Academy alumnus (2011)
• Curating a four-part, year-long series at the Museum of Contemporary Art,
Los Angeles entitled ‘Movement’
• Radio Host on non-profit online radio station Dublab
• Head of Non Projects record label, an Alpha Pup imprint
• Past releases on Ghostly International, Innovative Leisure and Brownswood
Recordings
• International touring experience with performances in Japan, Europe and
North America, sharing the stage with the likes of Morton Subotnick, Julia
Holter, Laurel Halo, Baths and many more

Press Quotes:
“The mood is evocative of Vangelis’ Blade Runner soundtrack, but elsewhere
things are less placid and misty-eyed, the drums on “Once” and “CXP” recreate the
head-over-heels tumble of drum ‘n’ bass, inspiring greater urgency in Simon’s
sax work. “Mouth” and “Petrol,” meanwhile, bring to mind Philip Glass’
work.”

Nobody – Vivid Green

Image: 1600550 Low End Theory resident & veteran Los Angeles DJ Nobody creates
the crucially timed full-length Vivid Green via Alpha Pup Records.
Embracing the flux within LA underground musical movements of
the last fifteen years, Elvin Estela has been on the studio grind while
touring internationally refining chops in bass heavy beats, electronic
bangers and psychedelic rock.
Since debuting with one of Los Angeles’ first instrumental hip-hop
full lengths with 2000’s Soulmates, Estela has gone on to remain
relevant within the shape-shifting scenes of LA’s multicultural

Vivid Green is strongly instrumental, but boasts the vocal

Hyperactive by nature, his productions (as Fulgeance, Peter Digital Orchestra or Souleance) have served as a showcase […]

Image: 1607901 NEW PRICE, NEW FORMAT –> PLS PLACE A NEW ORDER!
– Uptown Syndicate Band was formed in Norman,Oklahoma May 1971. The band spanned nine years and had nearly 50 members. Uptown were renowned for high energy performances of Funk, Rhythm and Blues with soulful ballads mixed in

Uptown was born out of the fraternity and sorority parties at Oklahoma University, especially the Alpha-Phi-Alpha and as their popularity grew, encompassing campuses all over. Considered locally as the top show bands rivaling the Gap Band of Tulsa, yet still only managed to record 2 solitary singles, probably due to a hard touring regime. The group consisted of a powerful horn section, two strong vocalists, and a serious rhythm section that would have matched JBs, The fact they never recorded a few Lps is a crying shame, but here we have their 4 recordings in their delightful and varied glory

“Fast Moving, High Stepping, Moving and Grooving to the beat of the Uptown Syndicate Show.”

ESTHETICS OF PLAGIARISM

The esthetic of the fabrication defect will re-utilize the sonorous civilized trash (Everyday Symphony), be they conventional or unconventional instruments (for example: toys, cars, whistles, saws, Hertz Orchestra, street noises, etc.) – all of this put into a rhythmic or dance music format, with choruses, and within the parameters of popular music.

It will recycle an alphabet of emotions contained in songs and musical symbols of the First World, that sealed each marked step of our affective and emotional life. They will be put to use in small “cells” of “plagiarized” material. This deliberate practice unleashes an esthetic of plagiarism, an esthetic of arrastâo* that ambushes the universe of the well-known and traditional music. We are at the end, thus, of the composer’s era, inaugurating the PLAGI-COMBINATOR era.

FABRICATION DEFECT

The Third World has a huge and rapidly increasing population. These people have been converted into a kind of “androids, ” almost always analphabetics. It has happened here in Brazil – in the slums of Rio, São Paulo and the Northeast of Brazil, and in the Third World in general. But these “androids” reveal some inborn “defects”: they think, dance and dream – things that are very dangerous to the First World Bosses.

Let me explain: In the eyes of the First World, we in the Third World who think these things, and who explore our reality on the planet are like “androids” who are essentially defective.

To have ideas – to compose, for instance – is to dare. In the dawn of history, the idea of gathering vegetable fibers and inventing the art of weaving took great courage. To think will always be considered an affront.

* ARRASTÂO – A dragnet, technique used in urban robbery. A small group fan out and then run furiously through a crowd, taking people’s money, jewelry, bags, sometimes even clothes.

translator’s note: A type of “wilding” with a purpose, i.e. robbery. Available from 14.10.2016

Blackalicious – Imani Vol.1
Thursday, October 15th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Blackalicious – Imani Vol.1

Image: 1600375 It’s been a decade since the last Blackalicious LP, 2005’s The Craft. But the influential hip-hop duo comprised of rapper Gift of Gab and producer Chief Xcel have come full-circle on their expansive new album, Imani, Vol. 1, which will be self-released through the group’s PledgeMusic campaign.

”Imani Vol. 1 is our fourth album and marks another milestone in our career,” Chief Xcel tells Rolling Stone. ”Each album we do together tends to be a journey within itself that represents a very specific chapter of our lives. From Bosko’s timeless talk box to Zap Mama’s vocal brilliance, the ensemble of musicians, MCs, and vocalists involved in making Imani Vol. 1 all brought something very unique to the project that helped us grow and continue to expand the sound of Blackalicious.”

”On Fire Tonight,” a propulsive cut from the album, is available to stream below. The horn-driven track, which features a soulful guest vocal from Myron (of Myron & E), showcases Gift of Gab’s limber verbal gymnastics and Chief Xcel’s dynamic, propulsive production style.

Blackalicious began work on Imani (the Swahili word for ”faith”) three years ago, lining up guest appearances from several rappers (Lifesavas, Lateef, Lyrics Born), funk band Monophonics, polyphonic Afro-pop vocalist Zap Mama, hip-hop/soul musician Bosko and black roots musician Fantastic Negrito, among others. The first installment focuses primarily on the duo themselves. ”We wanted people to get Blackalicious,” Gift of Gab told Exclaim in January. ”I think that Volume Two may be a bit more guest-heavy, but with this one, because it’s been so long since we put out a record, we wanted people to get Blackalicious, you know?”

Though it’s been 10 years since their last album, the duo have remained busy with other projects: In 2013, Xcel joined RV Salters (General Elektriks) to release Walking Into a Burning House, his debut collaboration with Salters as Burning House. Gift of Gab has released three solo LPs – including 2012’s The Next Logical Progression. That same year, the rapper suffered kidney failure from his Type 1 diabetes, he’s continuing dialysis treatments while awaiting a kidney donor.

With access granted by founder John Parry Public Information have selected twenty-five of their favourite electronic tracks, an early autumn heat-wave of perfect melody. Parry Music was founded in Toronto, 1974 by John Parry and Chris Stone. John was formerly a manager of revered UK library Chappell Music and Chris was a Canadian music consultant, both brought some familiar musicians to the table.

Johnny Hawksworth, Robin Artus, Paul Kass, Nino Nardini (close allies with Roger Roger) are on board Tomorrow’s Achievements. At the same time, a little known Canadian Library musician who features heavily, Harry Forbes. Forbes is the real driving force of P.I.’s Parry-Love, a master of imminent, hummable melody, sublime synth miniatures baked in sweetness.

Elsewhere, the other players in proto-Balearic house, groovy electronic disco, spooked choral drone, freaked-modular scorch and weird Radiophonic bleep. Joey Negro – Italo House
Thursday, July 3rd, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Joey Negro – Italo House

Image: 1589189 Joey Negro steps up to the plate with his new collection of Italo House. A personal selection of the deeper side of Italian house music.

Following on from the phenomenal success of the recent “Remixed With Love” compilation plus more Joey Negro compiled
albums including “GoGo Get Down”, “Backstreet Brit Funk”, “Destination Boogie” and the ever-popular Soul of Disco series Z
Records continues to release high quality compilations filled with lesser known disco, funk and boogie.
Now it’s the turn of “Italo House” to get the JN selection treatment with over 20 tracks hand picked from the late 80’s and
early 90’s covering a lot of the deeper classics and some lesser known releases from a golden era of Italian dance music.
The late 80s were undoubtedly a golden era for dance music. A time which saw the birth of many genres and sub genres –
from acid house to hardcore to Balearic – and of course Italo house. If you ask Jo Raver to name an Italo house track, they’d
probably come back with Blackbox, Jinny, Fiddlefatti or one of many big piano tune. At the same time there was another
equally distinctive sound coming out of Italy- a warmer, deeper, more emotional style which didn’t yield any commercial
hits. The sound was more jazzy and soulful with syncopated percussion, dreamy pads and, though piano was often used, it
wasn’t in the obviously programmed, big breakdown style which became a cliché of the Italo house genre. This more
underground side of Italo was closer to the original American house sound- but still retained a very European flavour.
In common with other Z compilations which have featured Britfunk and GoGo, this album was an important release for me.
Important because I love a lot of the records, many of which have been largely forgotten about, but also because there
really was a unique sound coming out of Italy, spread across many labels and involving numerous producers. As a result, it
has never really been fully showcased like this before. I’m glad this album exists for other people to discover or re-discover
the deeper side of Italo house. Joey Negro – Feb 2014

Cannibal Ox – The Cold Vein (Deluxe Ed. – White Vinyl)
Thursday, February 27th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Cannibal Ox – The Cold Vein (Deluxe Ed. – White Vinyl)

Image: 1587120 When Vast Aire, Vordul Mega, and producer El-P created Cannibal Ox’s seminal debut The Cold Vein, few could have foreseen the musical dexterity that would have been embodied on this now classic release. Upon it’s release, Pitchfork exclaimed, ”The Cold Vein is going to be on everybody’s year end list of the best underground hip-hop.” Not only was this prediction correct, but The Cold Vein would go on to be cemented as a classic album, earning spots on numerous top album lists of that year and even top album lists of the decade. With undeniable production and word play that Stylus Magazine declares shows ”the potential for hip-hop lyrics to work on many levels as the finest English poetry,” it’s no wonder that fans, new and old cannot get enough of The Cold Vein. After years of being out-of-print and pent-up demand, the group is giving the fans what they want by reissuing their magnum opus. For the first time ever, the album will be digitally remastered so listeners can experience the witty metaphors of Vast Aire and Vordul Mega over the instrumentation of El-P like never before. The album will also be released as a white 4XLP set, including a bonus instrumental version of the album.

Third Eye Ft. Wilton Gaynair – Connexion
Wednesday, November 27th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Third Eye Ft. Wilton Gaynair – Connexion

The musicians:

T.R.A.S.E. – Electronic Rock
Thursday, September 26th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on T.R.A.S.E. – Electronic Rock

Image: 1584252 Known amongst a small group of teenage friends as T.R.A.S.E (Tape Recorder And Synthesiser Ensemble) this previously unearthed and fully formed electronic music project was spearheaded by a 16-year-old school- boy as an extension of his woodwork, metalwork and science classes in 1981.

Composed and recorded using a self-made synth, audio mixer and elec- tronic percussion units T.R.A.S.E would bridge the gap between a love for sci-fi horror soundtracks, Gary Numan b-sides and an extra curricular hobby as a sound and lighting designer for school plays – bequeathing a backstory as unique and unfathomable as the individualistic sonic results that he would finally commit to C90. Having successfully recorded his only solo album, Electronic Rock (which was never duplicated beyond his own demo copy), this early musical achievement by Andy Popplewell stands up as a rare self-initiated example of embryonic experimental electro pop and genuine outsider music, marking the early domestication of synthesisers and the dawn of electronic home recording studios and the uninhibited results. Unhindered by adult concepts like self-consciousness, popular snobbery, fashion, pride and fear of failure (while funded by paper rounds and odd jobs in his Mancunian community), Andy, armed with the plans to the Chorosynth kit module, an old junk shop piano keyboard and some hand-me-down tools from his recently deceased dad, would fill an exercise book with plans, arrangements and self-penned new wave pop lyrics to fully realise the potential of his one-man synthetic symphony. Reaping the benefits of his own stencilled circuit boards and soldering iron skills (whilst occasionally enlisting the part time help of his younger brother on guitar) T.R.A.S.E’s homemade technology pop continued to bloom right up until the very cusp of adolescence when careers officers and real life responsi- bilities saw the end of Andy’s reel to reel multitracking which is finally pre- sented here for the first time since it was sung and played. This ambitious cross section of robotic funk and moody soundscape sequences makes instrumental nods to John Carpenter and Kraftwerk next to unpolished vocal drones worthy of a sedated Human League or Joy Divison, all of whom shared radio dial digits amongst Giorgio Moroder, Tubeway Army and The Glitter Band as Popplewell’s clearest unabashed influences.

The T.R.A.S.E tapes, finally unearthed by Finders Keepers, show the full extent of the projects repertoire before the “group’s” final hiatus which, for Andy, was followed by a working education in London under BBC employment as a trainee radio engineer (not far from the closed door of the Radiophonic Workshop) which has since led to a widespread reputation as one of the country’s leading independent tape engineers/editors/archivists indiscriminately splicing and baking vintage tapes for anyone in-between Alpha in Brussels and ZTT in London. Having worked with hundreds of reputable studios, pop stars and media companies throughout his career Andy claims he has rarely been asked about his own musical history in 30 working years, Finders Keepers are glad we Popped that very question.
