Karl Hector & The Malcouns – Unstraight Ahead
Thursday, August 7th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Karl Hector & The Malcouns – Unstraight Ahead

Image: 1589941 The long awaited second album by the originators of Afrodelic Kraut Funk. Feat. members of Poets of Rhythm and Whitefield Brothers. It’s been some years since the first Karl Hector release, and it’s known now that Mr. Hector is indeed the German producer and guitarist JJ Whitefield, ne Jan Weissenfeldt. Whitefield is the visionary behind the Poets of Rhythm and the Whitefield Brothers, the ensembles whose rough analog sound and return to the funk archetypes of the late 60s to early 70s paved the way for labels like Daptone, Truth & Soul, Timmion.

Whitefield, along with Thomas Myland and Zdenko Curlija, founded Karl Hector and The Malcouns in the early 2000s. Their debut, Sahara Swing, saw release on Now-Again in 2008. The album swung with influences from across the African diaspora and set the stage for a cult, but influential following. Hermes designer Christophe Lemaire picked tracks from Karl Hector and The Malcouns as amongst his favorites in the Now-Again catalog, and included them on his Where Are You From anthology. Festival promoters intrigued by the possibility of resurrecting the careers of once forgotten African mavericks – from Ghana’s Ebo Taylor to the progenitors of Zambia’s Zamrock scene – brought Hector and crew across Europe playing festivals for ecstatic fans.

A grueling tour schedule made recording a follow up album to Sahara Swing quite the challenge, and as a result, the band opted to release limited edition, hand-silkscreened EP’s, which continued to show their deft handling of musics from Eastern and Northern Africa alongside Western psychedelia, jazz and funk. Whitefield gave himself 2013 to finish the album that would become Unstraight Ahead, which will see release on Now-Again this summer.

Unstraight Ahead finds the band exploring territories even outside of the expansive scope of Sahara Swing. On this album, the West African sounds of Ghana and Mali meet the East African sounds of Mulatu Astatke’s Ethiopian jazz and are tied together with the groove heavy experimentalism of The Malcouns’ 70s Krautrock godfathers: Can, of course, but also more obscure and equally adventurous groups like Agitation Free, Ibliss and Tomorrow’s Gift.

“We look to Middle Eastern funk and psychedelic fusions, and to various ethnic records for sound and phrasing,” Whitefield states. “We’re trying to combine the global experimentalism of Krautrock with the backbeat of funk.” This explains how songs in uneven meters – 5/4, 7/8 – always sound so accessible and natural on Unstraight Ahead. It’s mainly an instrumental affair, but guest artists appear throughout, from across the African diaspora to those from the worldly Krautrock forebears of their German fatherland: it’s Marja, daughter of Embryo founder Christian Burchard, whose vocals open the album.

It’s an album out of time, one that couldn’t have been made in the era its aural aesthetics reference, as its scope is so broad. But it’s an album focused by funk – and an ambition to expand funk’s reaches. The Malcouns – including Poets of Rhythm songwriter and vocalist Bo Baral – created their own instruments to fashion an album that stands alongside the great albums of its progenitors but charges Unstraight Ahead into a curious musical future. Afrodelic Kraut Funk from the minds behind the Poets of Rhythm and the Whitefield Brothers:

Now-Again Records follows up The Heliocentrics’ percussive excursions into the astral realms of psychedelia with an album of Afro-tinged funk music originating from the Southern Sahara and recorded in Germany.

Karl Hector has, to date, only appeared on one 7-inch, from 1996, as the leader of the Funk Pilots. For this album, “Sahara Swing“, he has teamed up with Jay Whitefield (producer and guitarist for the Poets of Rhythm and the Whitefield Brothers, and founder of the now defunct Hotpie & Candy Records) and Thomas Myland and Zdenko Curlija, founders of The Malcouns …

Who would have thought that 10 years and 100 releases later the label would have become the multi-national-corporate-superpower that is Hospital Records?!

Dilated Peoples – The Platform
Wednesday, April 12th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Dilated Peoples – The Platform

Image: 1609700 On the West Coast, gangsta rap held sway in hip-hop as
the 21st century began. The alternative and conscious rap
music of the early-to-mid-90s had all but faded into the
underground. The scene was set for a comeback, perhaps
as a backlash to the perceived violence and misogyny of
gangsta rap’s content. Leading the resurgence of
alternative hip-hop were groups like Jurassic 5, and recent
signees to Capitol Records, a West coast trio that had
been building steam underground since the early 90s
called Dilated Peoples.
Anticipation was high for the release of the debut album
from Evidence, Rakaa, and DJ Babu. (Of the influential
turntablist collective Beat Junkies.) When The Platform
arrived in May of 2000 it was met with critical and
underground acclaim, as well as affording Dilated Peoples
their first Billboard chartings. It featured a back-to-basics
sound with a heavy debt to the old-school hip-hop ethos,
the kind of sound that harkened back to the early days of
legends like De La Soul & A Tribe Called Quest. Hits like
“No Retreat” and “The Platform” were bolstered by
Evidence & Rakaa’s subtle, abstract wit, and swift, adroit
wordplay, while DJ Babu provided production chops and
dextrous scratches. On The Platform the trio were joined
by the likes of B-Real, Tha Alkoholiks, Everlast, Planet
Asia, and many more providing guest vocals, while
boasting guest production from The Alchemist & Kut Masta
Kurt, among others.
Since its 2000 release this influential record, which
heralded the return of alternative hip-hop, has never seen
a vinyl reissue. With that, Get On Down-always on top of
giving the greatest hip-hop albums their due-is proud to
present this re-release of The Platform. The rhymes are
still fresh, the production is still pristine, and the album is
now back on vinyl for the first time in 17 years.

Peaking Lights – Little Flower (feat. Chloe Sevigny)
Friday, December 30th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Peaking Lights – Little Flower (feat. Chloe Sevigny)

Image: 1607950 Recent Harvey Favorite Alert!* Peaking Lights are back at it. While the clouds of pessimism hover, rays of sunshine cut and break thru with two new tracks for healing and conquering the shadows that loom. Little Flower featuring Chloë Sevigny for Regime Des Fleurs and curated by fashion sound guru Michel Gaubert. Over the summer of 2016, Peaking Lights was approached by DJ Harvey’s camp for the instrumental version for sweaty times so for some of you this tune may ring familiar, however, this is the first time it’s been available…. TIP! *Limited initial copies*
.
The vocal version features Chloë Sevigny with a beautiful melancholic yet powerful chant to Saint Therese an alchemical figure who’s words “What matters in life is not great deeds but great love” ring true thru time. Peaking Lights production is a playfully psychedelic mid tempo love jam with a lot of groove.

On the flip is Conga Blue with the instrumental to follow. An upbeat weirdo disco cut laying it down at 120bpm with some dreamy vocals with a catchy line “through dark and doom can flowers bloom?” as the solid rhythm section holds it together while melodies float by and the clav and synths ride the groove. Originally this cut was released digitally in March 2016 one year later it’s on wax.

Peaking Lights are also preparing to release their much-anticipated fifth record – a double album (title TBA) in April 2017 on their label Two Flowers Records.

Conceived in 2013 to re-release their album, 936, Two Flowers Records is now completely independent, run by Indra Dunis of Peaking Lights. The label follows an art as life ethic where the artist takes control of their work thru DIY mechanisms. Based in Los Angeles, CA.

3. Conga Blue

The Gaslamp Killer – Instrumentalepathy
Friday, October 28th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Gaslamp Killer – Instrumentalepathy

Image: 1606856 With many new roads traveled over the last few years, The Gaslamp
Killer is back with the full-length LP Instrumentalepathy. GLK will
initiate his new imprint Cuss Records with Instrumentalepathy.
French surrealism artist Albane Simon designed the cover, supplying
an array of psychedelic imagery that contains a brilliant sense of
connection to GLK’s music & the chaos he’s survived.
Instrumentalepathy features an impressive cast of artists tied closely
to GLK over his music career with Brainfeeder, Low End Theory and
beyond. Guests include Gonjasufi, Miguel Atwood Ferguson, Niki
Randa, Kid Moxie, Mophono, Amir Yaghmai and The Heliocentrics.
It’s been over a decade since GLK and Gonjasufi have collaborated
on new music, bringing the two natives of San Diego back together
for something truly special.
As many know, GLK used the triumphs of battling a near death
experience three years ago when shaping his debut Cuss Records
album. A handful of the tracks were even captured from his bed,
unable to walk, with morphine running through his veins and staples
in his body. A musical illumination that one could argue helped
save his life and steared him towards the achievements he has
accumulated with his live band The Gaslamp Killer Experience.
Instrumentalepathy marks the catalyst point of an important road for
GLK and the electronic community at large.
Instrumentelephy, like his latest releases, continues down the rabbit
hole of his debut full length Breakthrough (Brainfeeder) and the recent
live record with his band The Gaslamp Killer Experience. Molding
psychedelic ethos and heavy drum breaks with the traditional music
language of his ancestors and the futuristic landscapes of modern
electronica, GLK continues to push the boundaries of contemporary
music.

Johnny! – I’m Gone
Friday, October 28th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Johnny! – I’m Gone

Image: 1606842 Introducing: Johnny! Ghanaian Afro-Rock from German producer/composer JJ Whitefield and an international cast of top shelf musicians.

A-SIDE
AGO
B-SIDE
AGO (INSTRUMENTAL)

Whitefield, who in the early ‘90s revived the gritty, analogue Funk sounds of the ‘60s and ‘70s with his Poets Of Rhythm, has been working with Now-Again Records for almost a decade, releasing a flock of acclaimed projects with Karl Hector & The Malcouns, Whitefield Brothers, Rodinia and the Original Raw Soul anthology. He first started exploring African rhythms with the Whitefield Brothers in the late ‘90s, continuing in the ‘00s with Karl Hector & The Malcouns. He’s been instrumental in launching Ghanaian Afro Beat/Funk legend Ebo Taylor´s international career, decades after the maestro recorded the landmark albums that have inspired thousands. Whitefield recorded two new studio albums with Taylor and toured in his band between 2009 and 2013, where he met Taylor’s son Henry and percussionist/Singer Eric Owusu.
The trio now front the Johnny! band and find inspiration not only in Ghana’s hypnotic grooves, but also the full frontal fuzz guitar assault heard on the legion of 70s Zambian Zamrock albums recently reissued by Now-Again. Indeed, Whitefield credits his tours with Zamrock godfathers Rikki Ililonga and WITCH’s Jagari Chanda as instrumental in creating the Johnny’s sonic backdrop. The band is rounded out by Turkish drummer Bernd Oezsevim (Woima Collective, Rodinia) and Indonesian bassist/multi instrumentalist Tomi Simatupang (Whitefield Brothers).
This is Dance Rock at the core with the possibilities to stretch out and go into psychedelic realms. The results, spread out over three 7” singles and pressed in a run of 1000 units each, speak for themselves. Every record comes with a download card for WAV files of all six tracks (vocals and instrumentals from each release) and point at a new direction for the music inspired by the Great Continent. One that takes a direction once mocked as derivative and asserts its importance on the globe’s current musical stage.

– Limited edition of 1000. Not to be repressed.
– Comes with download card for WAV files of all three Johnny! 7” singles.
– Die-cut dress jacket and resealable “Japanese-style” sleeve. Available from 25.11.2016
