Omar – Love in Beats
Friday, March 10th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Omar – Love in Beats

Image: 1609185 Omar has a totally unique, individual style and sound still marks him out as a future thinking and utterly unrivaled artist, who has collaborated with so many legendary names that it would be foolish to deny his worldwide reputation – who would dare contradict the likes of Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Carleen Anderson, Angie Stone, Common and fellow fans and followers like Maxwell and Jarrod Lawson?

Following on from 2013’s album The Man, 2016 sees his new long player further cement this undeniable reputation. Love In Beats is Omars’ 8th studio album of his long, illustrious career and may just be the most eclectic & varied to date. Somewhat more electronic in it’s conception and sound than it’s predecessor, Love In Beats incorporates soul, Caribbean rhythms, an undercurrent of funk, with touches of zouk, a jazzy waltz, spoken word and also features collaborations with Us soul legend Leon Ware, Blue Note pianist Robert Glasper, grime MC Ty, Guadeloupe born singer Jean-Michele Rotin, and Uk soultress Natasha Watts, The Floacist and Mayra Andrade, the Cape Verdean born singer who lives and records in Paris.

Co produced by Scratch Professer, Omars Grammy winning brother, this collection should create excitement worldwide, the sounds are varied – but all have Omars’ unique fingerprint on them, style and substance beautifully merged!

Dollkraut – Holy Ghost People
Friday, January 27th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Dollkraut – Holy Ghost People

Image: 1608122 Dollkraut is back with his sophomore album Holy Ghost People on newly minted label Dischi Autunno (founded by Jennifer Cardini and Noura Labbani)

Tracklisting LP:
A1 Bonnie Said
A2 Valium
A3 Oblivian
A4 Holy Ghost People
A5 Wrong
B1 Red Girl
B2 Beggarman
B3 Have I Told You
B4 Victim

After releasing a string of quality EP’s for the likes of Charlois,
Doppellschall and Permanent Vacation, Amsterdam based artist
Dollkraut (Pascal Pinkert) confirmed in 2014 with his debut album
“Schimanski’s Black Lullabies” on Brandt Brauer Frick’s imprint The
Gym. The Dutch producer’s back with his sophomore LP due February
24th 2017 on Dischi Autunno – new label founded by Jennifer Cardini
and Noura Labbani.
“Holy Ghost People” sees Dollkraut delve deeper into his recognizable
lo-fi and organic sound, inspired by old movie soundtracks, creating
gritty atmospheres mixed with the purest of melodies. Album opens with
instant hit “Bonnie Said”, where Pascal’s vocals magically merge with
the darkest of bass lines. “Valium” continues the journey, increasing the
tempo but confirming the feeling of being in a lost sci-fi movie
soundtrack. On “Oblivian”, the rhythm slows down again, allowing us to
dive even more in this twisted yet candid universe.
Title track “Holy Ghost People” (and end track “Victim”) both have this
Portishead feeling to them, with their simple yet hypnotic synths swirling
like merry go-rounds while “Wrong” feels like escaped from a “Magical
Mystery Tour” session in the late 60’s. Tempo increases instantly on
“Red Girl”, making the listener feel like propelled in a road movie. “Have
I Told You”, 8th track on the album and yet another hit, develops an
addictive, slow groove coupled with Pascal’s vocals, creating the perfect
sonic balance. Make no mistake, you’re about to listen to one of the key
records of 2017. Available from 10.03.2017

Various – New Orleans Funk Vol.4
Wednesday, October 19th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – New Orleans Funk Vol.4

Image: 1607071 Soul Jazz Records’ latest crate-digging excursion into the Crescent City vaults delves deep into the roots and history of the voodoo world of New Orleans Funk and as ever features a stellar selection of killer rare funk and soul!

The album is jam-packed with serious break-heavy, heavyweight funk tunes from classic New Orleans artists including Eddie Bo, Betty Harris, Dave Bartholomew, Johnny Adams and Eldridge Holmes (with the ever-present Allen Toussaint and The Meters as always behind the scenes). There is also a host of rare cuts from a number of lesser-known second line New Orleans artists, whose fame rarely reached past the walls of the city, including Gus ‘The Groove’ Lewis, James K-Nine, Norma Jean, Bob French, Chuck Colbert, Zilla Mayes and Joe Haywood.

In the 1960s the syncopated beat of New Orleans Funk developed out of a gumbo mix of New Orleans local flavours – rhythm and blues, Mardi Gras Indians, the street percussion Second Line of the Jazz Funeral and Marching bands, Caribbean rhumba and mambo rhythms – all of which are in full effect. Even Zydeco, the rhythm and blues offspring of Louisiana Cajun music, had the funk as the King of Zydeco, Clifton Chenier, shows us here.

New Orleans music and Voodoo both have their roots in the African-American free black and slave gatherings held at Congo Square from the 18th century onwards. Here Voodoo king Doctor John (the original one!) and Voodoo queen Marie Levaux held court over their followers, and here also could be heard the first sounds of New Orleans jazz music. Soul Jazz Records’ latest album describes how these two cultural forms are inextricably inter-related.

The album traces the path of funk from the very first glimpses of the style – Dave Bartholomew’s super-tight ‘The Monkey’ (recorded in 1957) and James Waynes’ junkie jailbird anthem ‘Junco Partner’ (1951, later covered by Dr John, Professor Longhair, James Booker, and The Clash) through to the 1970s heavyweight boogie funk of Chocolate Milk’s rare groove classic Action Speak Louder Than Words and The Baron’s ‘Making It Better’.

Also featured is a selection of hard-core classic funk productions from the legendary Eddie Bo (James K-Nine, David Robinson) and the genius of Allen Toussaint (Eldridge Holmes, Gus ‘The Groove’ Lewis, Lou Johnson). There also a number of super-rare independent New Orleans’ one-off 45 single funk productions from the likes of Chick Colbert and Bob French. And lastly, New Orleans Funk female vocalists are in full effect with tracks by Betty Harris (whose ‘Lost Queen of New Orleans Soul’ has just come out on Soul Jazz Records), Zilla Mayes and Norma Jean.

This album is released as a heavyweight double gatefold vinyl (+ download code), CD pack and digital album, and comes with extensive sleeve-notes and exclusive photography.

Various – Movements Vol.8 (2LP+MP3)
Wednesday, February 17th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Movements Vol.8 (2LP+MP3)

Image: 1602398 The intelligentsia have been claiming it for quite some time, and now finally, after many petitions, demonstrations and protests, a tiny little record label from Germany has achieved what only Google and “troubleshooter par excellence” Angus MacGyver have ever accomplished: admission into the worldwide dictionary. “To Google” and “to MacGyver” will soon be joined by the newly coined verb “to Tramp”. The term can be decoded as “to seek and find the seemingly hopeless” or “looking for something hidden”, always connected with a positive output.

For several years, gold seekers at the most humble and tiniest record label on earth (however certainly one of the funkiest!) follow their dedicated passion. Their brand new masterwork, Movements 8, focuses on rare privately produced american soul, jazz and funk, and proudly bears the title as the 8th volume in the Movements Series.

It took long to find the original vintage records and master tapes, but it took even longer to find the musicians behind the recordings. It required painstakingly detailed work to get everything together. While other labels’ compilation quality might wane after some years, getting further watered down as the volumes increase, and banking on the success of earlier releases, the Movements series is a positive exception. The people behind this series know how the wind blows, and will stop at nothing to provide music lovers, DJs, and collectors only sweetest fresh breeze of heretofore unheard and uncompiled masterpieces. Songs by Papa Albert French, Thyme, Kay Dennis, Joe Wilson, Ulysses Crockett, John Timmons, and all the fellow campaigners emphasize this statement. The detailed liner notes and unseen photographs complement the whole package. The staff at Tramp always produces albums from their compilation series’ as if it were their last so that each record can be enjoyed in it’s own right. That being said, you can trust that Tramp is already seeking “to Tramp” more gems like these for a 9th volume.

Key selling points:
– most of the songs appear on CD/digital for the very first-time
– the double vinyl LP comes with a full album download code
– 16-page CD-booklet and vinyl LP contain detailed liner notes and unseen pictures

Tracklist:
01. Papa Albert French – Bald Headed Beulah (M. Baird)
02. Herb Jones – Tell Old Bill (C. Sandberg)
03. Thyme – Bony Bony (G. Lux)
04. Kay Dennis – Feeling Good (L. Newley)

Source Direct – Black Rose (Blawan RMX)
Wednesday, May 6th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Source Direct – Black Rose (Blawan RMX)

Image: 1597063 Boddika’s Nonplus label will release a series of 12-inches mixing classic Source Direct with new remixes.

A. Black Rose
B. Black Rose – Blawan Remix

Jim Baker is a pioneering drum & bass and jungle artist who’s been recording solo as Source Direct since 1999 (before then the project was a duo with Phil Aslett). On June 8th Nonplus will issue a 12-inch that has a Blawan remix of “Black Rose” alongside the 1996 original. That’ll be followed by a record featuring ’95 cut “Approach & Identify” backed by a remix from Demdike Stare. These release will be available on vinyl and digital formats—it’ll be the first time the original tunes have been available digitally.

“I first met Jim around ’97/’98 at The End nightclub in Central London,” Boddika told RA. “I wasn’t sure who he was when I first met him. I thought he was one of the guys from Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels at first, but soon realised he wasn’t. By that time I was an avid listener of anything Source Direct were doing and their tracks were ‘buy on sight’ for me. The Source Direct discography was in many ways a blueprint for lots of jungle/d&b that would come throughout the following years and has stood the test of time unbelievably well.”

He adds: “There are a few reasons why we decided to re-release and remaster the SD Recordings catalogue, the first one being that it’s never been available digitally before. The second is that we both think it’s something that needs to be heard by a new generation who have never had the privilege and who may not own a turntable. Some of the records are hard to come by these days and if you do find them on Discogs, they’ll set you back a few quid.

Thirdly, it’s something we’ve spoken about a few times over the last couple of years and I personally thought now is a better time than ever to unleash this project, especially as there’s been a growing interest in old jungle recently—it wouldn’t be right to leave this music out of the loop! We also wanted to breathe new life into the project by getting remixes done to accompany the original tracks. We decided to ask artists from different scenes and genres to make use of the samples and get their interpretations on the original music.”

More remix 12-inches will follow, culminating with most of the Source Direct back catalogue, much of which has never been made available digitally, being remastered and re-released. We spoke with Baker via email to discuss the project.

What are your thoughts on having your music remastered and reissued for a new generation of listeners?

I’m extremely excited about working with Boddika. This gives a new generation the chance to own tracks that haven’t been available until now and also introduces the Source Direct sound into the techno/deep house scenes—music I’ve always been a fan of and an avid buyer of since an early age. I always felt my music was ahead of its time, even within the early years of D&B. The Source Direct sound has always stood out from the crowd and I’ve consistently pushed myself creatively to produce original, cutting-edge club music that also sounds great within many other listening environments. So to release the original Source Direct tracks for this new generation who missed the golden years of infamous clubs and raves gives them the opportunity to re-live the excitement and energy I got from going out in my younger days and the chance enjoy that buzz of getting your hands on a new vinyl release.

What do you think of the Demdike Stare and Blawan remixes?

Blawan’s remix of “Black Rose” perfectly captures the dark tensions of the original track and uses the samples in new creative ways, which make a stomping techno track that retains the menacing visual concept of the original. Being the first artist to remix a Source Direct track is something I was looking forward to, and Blawan has certainly produced a great remix. Both the remix and the re-mastered original sound totally fresh and unique among current techno and D&B.

Demdike Stare have completely ripped up the script with their remix of “Approach & Identify,” taking it into realms I never thought possible. It transports you a million light years away, upon which you enter new worlds of imagination. You can only hope for a wormhole ‘out there’ to return to normality. I’m very proud of both these releases and am looking forward to letting the future projects free within human kind.

Black Star – Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are… (pic.disc)
Saturday, September 27th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Black Star – Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are… (pic.disc)

Image: 1592914 UME will continue its ”Respect the Classics” tribute to many of hip-hop’s finest with the vinyl release of rap icon Talib Kweli’s four historic Rawkus Records albums, including the underground classic, Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star, in a limited edition two-tone black on black picture disc.

Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star was released on August 18, 1998, to critical acclaim. The title is a reference to the Black Star Line, a shipping company founded by Pan-Africanist Marcus Garvey. The album deals with modern-day issues, philosophies and life in Brooklyn. The two MCs had planned to release solo albums around the same time, but decided instead to collaborate on a full-length album. The first single, ”Definition (song),” is a reaction to hip-hop’s fascination with death, dedicated to both Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G., with a chorus that gives a nod to Boogie Down Productions’ ”Stop the Violence.” ”Children’s Story” is a re-imagination of the Slick Rick original, featuring Mos Def cautioning against materialism. The second single, ”Respiration,” featuring Common, includes a Hi-Tek produced beat that samples Don Randi’s ”The Fox” and another from the hip-hop documentary Style Wars. The track offers a melancholy ode to city life, with references to organic life functions such as breathing, eating and sleeping, but with an ominous edge, as Kweli raps about ”sitting on shitty steps/we stooped to new lows, hell froze/the night the city slept.” The album peaked at No. 53 on the Billboard Top 200 and No. 13 on the Hip-Hop Albums chart, but has become considered a classic since then.

Breakaway – Straight On To The Top!
Thursday, February 13th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Breakaway – Straight On To The Top!

Image: 1586585 Rare sought-after album from 1970 Illionois band Breakaway. Soul Funk-Fusion & Disco, remastered from original master tapes by legendary & original producer Bill Schulenberg.

The re-issue of these two long-lost and highly collectable LPs marks the end of a long road for
BBE and for the band Breakaway who made them… The explosion of Internet connectivity has
made what used to seem rare commonplace, but also opened up a world of previously
unknown musical riches, and enabled enterprising fans to make contact with obscure figures
that they might’ve imagined would be forever inaccessible. Whereas collectors used to prize
independent labels, now it’s all about the ‘private press’: records released by the same folks
that made them, in tiny numbers, without distribution, and promotion usually limited to giving
them out by hand at gigs. Such were the releases of Breakaway.
Breakaway recorded two LPs. in the late 70’s these re-issues tell the story of a magnificent live
band that made waves across St. Louis, Ill and further beyond to cities such as Boston and Las
Vegas. A story that has come full circle after 35 years…
Their self titled first album Breakaway touches showbiz glitz, while songs like ‘Understudy DJ’
and ‘There’s a New Group In Town’, caught the disco vibe, as pretty much everything else did
in 1977, and it’s these that have been delighting twenty-first century dancers , as the morethan
decade-long mania for all things ‘disco’ sends enterprising DJs and collectors looking way
beyond the canon of classics.
‘Straight On To The Top!’ was a more ambitious album, Breakaway had more experience and
the potential of a record deal seemed closer and more realistic. ‘Work With The Music’ has
something of a mutant disco feel, and would certainly fit with today’s music on the trendy dance
floors of East London, Williamsburg NY and Shibuya Tokyo ‘Breakaway’ had a sophisticated
funk/fusion sound that wouldn’t have sounded amiss on many a big-budget major label album
project. After the release of ‘Straight On To The Top!’, the band entered negotiations with
Bang Records in the US, but the A&R department fell apart, and the hopes of a record deal
faded…
Fast-forward 35 years, the enthusiasm is still the same…
This exclusive release comes with extensive sleeve notes by Jesper Christiansen – Doctor of
Music archaeology, the package also features a wealth of original photos alongside artwork
and press cuttings of the period.

Da Lata – Fabiola
Thursday, November 7th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Da Lata – Fabiola

Image: 1583622 Da Lata is led by Chris Franck and Patrick Forge. Their new album entitled Fabiola and? ‘ first in 10 years, is set for release in October, the 18th in 2013 and draws on a worldwide family of performers. Mayra Andrade (Cape Verde), Miguel Atwood Ferguson (USA), Rich Medina (USA) Marcelo Janeci (Brazil) Luisa Maita (Brazil), Graveola (Brazil), Fabricio FBC (Brazil), Sacha Gabriel (Canada), Jason Yarde (UK), Finn Peters
(UK) and Diabel Cissokho (Mali) to name just a few have all helped craft a record with a raw and live approach fusing Afro-Brazilian influences with a dance-floor sensibility and a distinctly London attitude.
2013 marks 20 years since Chris Franck and Patrick Forge first came together and began experimenting and redefining Brazilian music. Over that time, the duo have had major international success both in bands (Smoke City, Zeep & Da Lata) and for Patrick as a respected DJ who was a pioneer for Brazilian music with UK station Kiss FM in the early 90s.
Da Lata have started the build-up for the release of Fabiola by giving away the “Allstars? ‘ live version” of Ronco Da Cuica as a free download via their website www.dalatamusic.com which also features the video. Da Lata are about to start a new chapter in their illustrious story. 20 years of Afro-Brazilian adventure and it ain t over’ yet !

A brief history…
Da Lata previously released two studio albums in 2000 and 2002 respectively followed by a remix album in 2004 all released through Chris Blackwell s Island Records’ subsidiary, Palm Pictures. Working alongside and collaborating with label mates like Ernest Ranglin Baaba Maal, Femi Kuti, Bebel Gilberto the band were in good company. Since 2005 Da Lata s schedule slowed down as members went onto be involved in’
other projects but Da Lata didn t lay dormant, they continued re-working and remixing’ other people s tracks and many of these mixes as well as classic Da Lata tracks are still’ regular features on discerning global dance-floors today.

A new era
In 2010 Da Lata took their first tentative steps towards what has now become Fabiola ,? ‘ a collection of songs born out of disappointment, heartbreak and frustration, that transmutes those emotions into defiance, release and transcendence. Drawing together
an extended family of collaborators old and new, the album is characterized by Da Lata s new “organic edge”, dispensing with programming and electronic production’ Fabiola s emphasis is definitely on the “real” in every sense.? ‘ ‘
“Fabiola” is diverse in style but homogeneous in it s sound and intent, melding elements’ of Brazilian and African styles and rhythms with everything from Folk, Rock and Psychedelia to Spoken Word, Soul and Dub. Written exclusively by Chris Franck and the various collaborators, Franck, Forge and super (more than an) engineer Toni Econimides are the team that have crafted Fabiola into Da Lata s most mature and? ‘ ‘
accomplished album.

Elvis Costello & The Roots – Wise Up Ghost…
Thursday, October 10th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Elvis Costello & The Roots – Wise Up Ghost…

Image: 1583851 Elvis Costello and The Roots have announced that a collaborative album entitled Wise Up Ghost will be exclusively released by Blue Note Records on Monday 16th September 2013 in the UK and Tuesday September 17th 2013 in the USA.

The existence of the record was first revealed by ?uestlove as an aside during an interview with Billboard Magazine in January. A small number of test pressings were distributed as white labels on Record Store Day on the 20th of April but the full release will follow later in the year.

Most of the sessions took place in secret at Feliz Habitat Studios in the dead of night, while others were in plain sight at Costello’s Hookery Crookery Studios. Elvis described the record as ”the shortest distance between here and there” and containing ”both rhythm and what is read”. Ahmir says, ”It’s a moody, brooding affair, cathartic rhythms and dissonant lullabies. I went stark and dark on the music, Elvis went HAM on some ole Ezra Pound shit.”

The solitary star announcing vacancy burnt out as we arrived
They’d throw us back across the border if they knew that we survived

It promises to be one of the most unexpected and surprising releases of 2013.

In addition to the fabulous Roots crew and friends, the record features a guest vocal appearance on ”Cinco Minutos Con Vos” from La Marisoul, lead singer of the Los Angeles group, La Santa Cecilia.

The album was produced by longtime Roots associate, Steven Mandel together with Elvis Costello, and Ahmir ”?uestlove” Thompson.

About Elvis Costello:
Elvis Costello began working as a professional musician 35 years ago, shortly after the release of his first album, ”My Aim Is True”. He has made more than 27 studio records, three live albums and numerous guest appearances on stage, studio and screen as well as working as a record producer, bit-part actor and composing music for television drama and dance performance. He has toured the world with The Attractions, The Imposters and the pianist, Steve Nieve, performing with symphony and jazz orchestras as well as in solo performance. His catalogue of songs includes collaborations with Paul McCartney, Allen Toussaint and Burt Bacharach with whom he won a Grammy for ”I Still Have That Other Girl” from their 1998 collaboration, Painted From Memory. Costello’s songs have been recorded by George Jones, Chet Baker, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Dusty Springfield and Robert Wyatt. Elvis Costello and The Attractions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. In the same year he was awarded ASCAP’s prestigious Founder’s Award. His last record was 2010s National Ransom, produced by T-Bone Burnett. Between 2008 and 2010, Costello was the host of twenty episodes of the interview and music show, ”Spectacle” on the Sundance Channel.

He is also the Musical Director for Late Night with Jimmy Fallon where his beloved Roots crew serves as the house band. The musician’s indisputable reputation has also landed him musical directing positions with everyone from D’Angelo to Eminem to Jay-Z. In addition, the artist will release his first memoir, Mo’ Meta Blues: The World According to ?uestlove, on June 18th.

About The Roots:
Formed in 1987, in Philadelphia, PA, the legendary Roots Crew, consists of Black Thought (MC), Ahmir ”?uestlove” Thompson (drums), Kamal Gray (electronic keyboards), F. Knuckles (percussion), Captain Kirk Douglas (electronic guitar), Damon Bryson (sousaphone) and James Poyser (electronic keyboard).
