Mutated Forms – Wastegash (The Upbeats & Subzee RMXs)
Sunday, December 8th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Mutated Forms – Wastegash (The Upbeats & Subzee RMXs)

Image: 1585705 FRICTION’S REMIX OF THE WEEK – BBC RADIO 1

One of the most memorable releases in Grid Recording’s illustrious back catalogue, Mutated Forms’ Wastegash has become an anthem – laying waste to dancefloors with its unique drumstep beat.

Now one of the tunes that really helped put Mutated Forms on the map gets two very different but equally high quality remixes from D&B maestros The Upbeats and Dubstep don Subzee D.

Wastegash (The Upbeats Remix). Fresh from the release of their latest album, Primitive Technique, The Upbeats put their own industrial spin on a Grid classic. Featuring reworked drums, abrasive synths and a head rocking beat, The Upbeat’s remix amplifies all the attitude of the original. Premiered on BBC Radio 1 by Rockwell, and then made Frictions ‘Remix of the Week’ a few days later this one has already had huge support on Radio and on the underground.

Wastegash (Subzee-D Remix) – After clocking up over 700,000 views on UKF Dubstep and working with the likes of Hench and Sin City, Birmingham-based Subzee-D lends his skills to the final remix of Wastegash. Featuring claps soaked in reverb and a catchy edit of the main theme – Subzee D’s Wastegash Remix is already smashing dancefloors. Plays from Skream & Benga, Caspa and many more…

Support from Friction, Skream & Benga, Caspa, Andy C, S.P.Y, The Upbeats, Noisia, Crissy Criss, Ed Rush & Optical and more! Available from 18.11.2013

It’s no big secret that 2007 was another shocker for our beloved industry. You probably heard about it in the news. Artists were so broke they had to start to work at McDonalds. Record labels went out of business. Distribution companies had to close their doors. And almost every music industry jibb-jabb complained about disastrous records sales, the fucking internet and all these god damned kids who don’t want to spend their money for music anymore.

But you know what? That’s only one side of the coin. The other truth is that 2007 was a freaking great year for new refreshing music. One more reason to ask around again what Groove Attack‘s employees have been listening to during the past twelve months.

On this occasion the entire Groove Attack family would like to wish everybody a Happy New Year. Enjoy your holidays. And buy more records in 2008 …

Samiyam – Pizza Party
Friday, December 8th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Samiyam – Pizza Party

Image: 1615801 Beats by Samiyam. Cover by Samiyam. This is Sam’s second album on Stones Throw.

Advancing the unfolding legacy of instrumental hip-hop at Stones Throw
is Samiyam’s Pizza Party: 24 minutes of off-kilter mobster music mixed
with a warm soul sound that is unmistakably L.A. producer and beatmaker
Samiyam. Praised by his collaborators Action Bronson, Earl Sweatshirt,
The Alchemist, and Flying Lotus, Sam’s independent beat tape ventures
and instrumental albums are revered by rappers, respected by producers.
Pizza Party is free of samples from the characteristically dusty vinyl
grooves and warped tapes of past recordings. Instead, we have originally-
played synthesizer and FX in unison with the off-the-grid drum patterns
and aesthetic sonic swagger that Samiyam owns. The last track, “What
Can I Do,” features co-production with Jonwayne.
Samiyam grew up Sam Baker in Michigan. He was among a network
of post-Donuts producers focusing on instrumental hip-hop beat as the
finished work, who found themselves migrating west and huddling in
the scene around Low End Theory in east Los Angeles. That’s where
Flying Lotus met Sam and released Rap Beats Vol. 1 as the debut on
Brainfeeder in 2008.
Three other albums followed – Sam Baker’s Album (Brainfeeder, 2011),
Wish You Were Here (Leaving, 2013), and Animals Have Feelings
(Stones Throw, 2016) – along with production work for Earl Sweatshirt,
Captain Murphy, and Pharoahe Monch.

Their latest and well received album, Libertad , produced entirely by Texas music icon and Grammy Award winner Adrian “AQ” Quesada (Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, Echocentrics, Spanish Gold), re?ects today’s current mobilization among Black and Brown communities in the face of debilitating cycles of police brutality, ?awed education systems, privately owned prisons and detainment centers, corporately owned politicians, and racist judicial systems.
Through Easy Lee and MexStep’s back and forth Black Chicano intellectual ?ow, DJCG’s insight and dynamic turntablism, and AQ’s AfroLatino psychedelic funk-infused beats, the album delivers a mix of social justice and jam session with each song designed to raise questions, incite discussion, and promote healing, growth, and liberation. Libertad is a powerful body of work that documents and speaks u pon the times that we are living in

Marsmobil – Fairytales Of The Supersurvivor
Friday, September 22nd, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Marsmobil – Fairytales Of The Supersurvivor

Image: 1611735 Art pop meets Mongolian throat singing, Blade Runner meets Walter Carlos (Clockwork Orange), Tom Dissevelt and Kid Baltan (Bowie’s favourite band) meet Tame Impala.

The fifth album from Marsmobil has been hailed by many as their best yet. With closer ties to “Minx” (2006) than the last two albums, “Fairytales Of The Supersurvivor” returns to Marsmobil’s signature strength of wondrously brilliant songs (“And The Fishes In The Ocean”, “Shadows Of The Inner Light”) that blend off-the-wall cinemascope sounds with dazzling beats and punchy, powerful hooks to create uniquely distinctive art pop anthems.
As always with Marsmobil, Roberto Di Gioia writes, plays, sings and programs everything himself. Here, as on “Minx”, he’s brought in support from a fabulous singer – the very wonderful Amber Lin, who contributes vocals on four songs. All the cover illustrations are also by Di Gioia.

Multi-instrumentalist Roberto Di Gioia needs little introduction. The curious can explore his biography, discography and extensive lists of projects and collaborations as musician and songwriter (see below) for an impression of the hugely diverse achievements of this multi-talent and brilliant musician.
As a topical heads-up, Roberto Di Gioia is also the founder of the German jazz supergroup Web Web and released the album “Oracle” in September 2017. The second Web Web album will follow in early 2018, hard on the heels of the fifth Marsmobil release. Di Gioia also wrote and produced “Teufelswerk” for DJ Hell and contributed virtually all the songs on Hell’s latest album, “Zukunftsmusik”.

Tall Black Guy – Let’s Take A Trip (Coloured Vinyl)
Wednesday, October 19th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Tall Black Guy – Let’s Take A Trip (Coloured Vinyl)

Image: 1607058 ‘This is a journey into sound…,’ These familiar words, accompanied by the rumble of a distant train, signal the opening of ‘Let’s Take A Trip’, the sophomore album from Terrel Wallace aka Tall Black Guy. Since 2013’s ‘8 Miles To Moenart’ TBG has cemented his position as a standard bearer for the current hip-hop / beats scene. Born in Detroit and now residing in the UK, Wallace’s signature style of incredibly clever sample flips and deft production chops has won fans across the globe including Gilles Peterson, Lefto, Jazzy Jeff and House Shoes.

Since his debut release in 2011 (a daring and addictive flip of Fela Kuti), TBG has become revered for his unique take on soulful hip-hop production. The swing of the drums, the textures of the instrumentation as well as a fearlessness in taking on the classics (his Soundcloud page includes flips and chops of tracks from James Brown, De La Soul and Michael Jackson) have marked him out from the crowd. One of the best-kept secrets in the scene, his singular talent is now beginning to get the recognition it deserves. In the last 12 months he has remixed Little Dragon and been invited to take part in Jazzy Jeff’s Playlist Retreat alongside the likes of Eric Lau, James Poyser, Ali Shaheed Muhammed, Questlove and countless others.

For this album Wallace had a simple inspiration: ‘This album is all about taking a journey. As simple as that. Be it physical, emotional or spiritual. It’s asking and answering personal questions from myself within some of the tracks and also touching on social issues i.e. racism, inequality and privilege…that have been at the forefront of my mind over last three years.’ Sonically there is also a shift: ‘Jazz has definitely been more of an influence in this project, as I have been really inspired by so many up and coming musicians who I’ve been blessed to connect with’. Some of these musicians, including Kenny Keys, Miles Bonny, Diggs Duke and Dee Jackson feature on the project as well as regular collaborators Ozay Moore and Mario Sweet and fellow Playlist alumni Daniel Crawford and Masego. But this is one man’s vision, and for Tall Black Guy this trip is just the beginning…,.
