Insight & Damu The Fudgemunk (Y Society) – Travel At Your Own Pace (BF RSD)

Image: 1615578 In 2006 Insight the Truncator (Boston) and Damu the Fudgemunk
(Washington DC), started recording their debut album under the moniker
Y Society. Entitled, Travel at Your Own Pace (TAYOP) the album was frst
released in October 2007. In hindsight, the year would be one of the
last years where albums were designed for long term digestion, and a
handful of releases from the era survived as undisputed classics to the
masses. Today, conceptual albums are almost archaic in a genre built
upon storytelling and themes.
With TAYOP, Insight and Damu put the message in the music. The album
title served the two as a roadmap to completion of its 13 songs and in
return, the fnished product serves as a navigation aid to the listener
maneuvering through life within themselves and absorbing the outside
world. From adventures of fscal responsibility and imaginative tales of
time travel to deconstructing one’s obstructions and beyond, Insight’s
rhymes confdently steer the listener on whatever path they have chosen
for themselves. The goal of the album is to empower. From start to fnish,
the array of uplifting lyrics is somewhat like modern day proverbs, but
not proverbial.
Musically, Damu the Fudgemunk pulls from a deep body of in?uences,
that give it its unique identity and charm while paying homage to the
foundations of their predecessors. The Legendary Marley Marl cosigned
the album as a “refreshing” effort of the times. For a project of such
character, the general reception does not re?ect the magnitude of
acclaim by it’s cult following. Receiving mixed reviews in a foggy time
in the industry, Travel at Your Own Pace still managed to sell out of it’s
original production. However, it has been long out of print for a decade.
In response, original vinyl pressings have fetched several hundreds of
dollars per copy in the used online markets of Discogs and eBay. The
progressing careers of both Insight and Damu in addition to their label,
Redefnition Records (also celebrating 10 years) prove that in a murky
2007, they all knew where they were traveling and how to arrive. Even
with their growth, a Travel at Your Own Pace repress has remained an
inevitable inquiry and recurring expectation to loyal supporters. The
answer is here and the wait is fnally over.

Harold Land – A New Shade Of Blue (Gatefold/LP+MP3)

Following the highly-acclaimed release of FEELING GOOD and INNER PEACE compilations, WEWANTSOUNDS is delighted to announce the reissue of two superb classic albums in our new MAINSTREAM RECORDS ORIGINAL CLASSICS series. The releases will be crammed with bonus material. WEWANTSOUNDS has gone back to the original negative to reconstruct the original artworks and will add many jaw dropping never-seen photo sessions and CD Bonus material with new liner notes. LPs will be released in glorious gatefold sleeves.

Recorded in 1971, this beautiful Harold Land record produced by Bob Shad, is nothing but a Harold Land – Bobby Hutcherson Quintet album in disguise. The quintet recorded a handful of marvelous albums between 1967 and 1971 mainly under the Bobby Hutcherson name on Blue Note but they recorded one album on Chess and two for Mainstream. A New Shade of Blue recorded in Los Angeles where the quintet was based is one of their best albums and has never been reissued before except in Japan.

Featuring a superb line up comprising Buster Williams on Bass and Billy Hart on Drums – the rhythm section of Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi Sextet – the session is augmented by Bill Henderson on Piano and Fender Rhodes and Mtume on percussion.

Together they create a superb soundscape featuring the quintet’s trademark sound, both spiritual and serene, with Land’s unmistakable sax playing and Bobby Hutcherson modal touch. The highlight of the album is the long hypnotic track “Mtume”, a deep, slow burner displaying the group’s fantastic interplay. For the first time ever the album will be reunited with the beautiful 8 min outtake “Dark Mood” which was briefly issued in 1974 on a Mainstream compilation.

The release will also be crammed with unissued session photo taken by LA photographer Dick Sanders and will feature new liner notes by radio DJ and renowned digger Sam Barbatano (Sunday Jazz, KTRU Houston)

1 – A New Shade Of Blue
2 – Mtume

1 – Ode To Angela
2 – De-Liberation
3 – Short Subject

Pleasure – Glide – Essential Selectrion 75-82
Thursday, October 3rd, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Pleasure – Glide – Essential Selectrion 75-82

Image: 1584066 Pleasure originated from the ashes of two local Portland, Oregon bands, The Soul Masters and Franchise, to become veritable monsters of funk, soul and jazz. Their sound is often compared to Earth, Wind and Fire or Kool and the Gang. They had an inspired run of seven albums, six for Fantasy Records and one for RCA, from 1975 through 1982. The group was discovered by Grover
Washington Jr., he passed their demos on to Wayne Henderson of The Crusaders, who signed them to his production company, At Home Productions. There, in addition to recording the group’s own material for Fantasy Records, members of Pleasure also collaborated with Henderson’s other artists, including Ronnie Laws and Side Effect.
Tracks from all seven Pleasure albums are featured on this multi-LP set, Glide: The Essential Collection 1975-1982, many of which have never been reissued on LP before, including an extended disco/dance remix of “Foxy Lady” which was lost in tape vaults for 35 years! Two versions of Pleasure’s top 10 R&B smash “Glide” appear, along with carefully curated deep tracks like
“Thoughts Of Old Flames”, “Sassafras Girl” and “Sending My Love”, as well as radio favorites such as “Let Me Be The One” and the hip-hop breakbeat classics “Let’s Dance” and “Bouncy Lady”. Rounding out this deluxe package are many rarely seen group photos, along with extensive liner notes featuring newly-commissioned interviews with original band members by veteran Urban
music critic and historian A. Scott Galloway.

Holy moly, the year 2005 is almost over. And so many changes happened we can’t even remember. Most recently we had to congratulate Mrs. Merkel for becoming the first female chancellor of Germany, but honestly nobody really cared. As always the much more important news came from overseas. Have you heard that our beloved newlyweds Jessica and Nick split up after they had stolen the hearts of audiences everywhere? And Britney sold Kevin’s Ferrari. Oh boy…But through all these times of melancholy one thing will remain the same and stay forever, and that’s our pure love for music.

So in good ol’ tradition we asked around what Groove Attack’s employees have been listening to in 2005. Read on ‘cuz this list is for you …
