The Milk – Live At The Union Chapel
Wednesday, December 7th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Milk – Live At The Union Chapel

Image: 1607725 On the hot, summer evening of 8th July 2016, Wah Wah 45s and their four-piece soul band, The Milk, realised a long-time ambition as the epic sounds of ‘Favourite Worry’ filled a sold-out Union Chapel. Taking to the stage at the iconic venue which has been home to some of London’s most legendary live shows, from the first Big Chill events to Björk to Terry Callier, was an honour that was understood by all.

So on that night, accompanied by beautiful string and brass sections, the band delivered a live performance that none of the 800 fans, packed into those hallowed pews, will ever forget.

When you mention certain venue names, bands and labels start to think about live recordings and the Union Chapel is one of them. But it was only when drummer and producer Mitch began sending round rough mixes of the recordings that the band and label realised they had something very special on their hands.

Being a great live band is a fundamental part of what makes The Milk who they are. These recordings really demonstrate the closeness of the four men, their solid work ethic, their exceptional ability as performers and their connection with their fans. But above all, it showcases their songs and songwriting in the best possible way.

And while from the audience’s standpoint everything sounded and looked grandiose, the band themselves were living a very memorable experience on stage, as perfectly described by Dan Le Gresley below:

“It’s very rare that we get the chance to recreate our music live with the same instrumentation and attitude in which it was first created. The ambiance of the smokey chambers of the Union Chapel was strangely similar to the medieval barn from which the music of Favourite Worry was brought to life. We can’t put our fingers on why, maybe the history, maybe the sense of solidarity among us – either way, if you were there then you shared in something truly special. It is for this reason that we are very proud to release this show as our first live album – a gig that we will always cherish.

Our eleven strong ensemble did the Gospel-soaked halls of the Union Chapel venue proud and we are very grateful that our wonderful string section and our awesome brass section were able to join us for the night. With their help, we were able to capture, in a live context, a true reflection of the bands soul for the first time.”

Whether it’s hearing the vast sound of Wanderlust as it steps up that key in the final moments, or revisiting seldom played hits from the first album, ‘Tales From The Thames Delta’, there is something here for fans old and new.

Izem – Hafa
Friday, September 23rd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Izem – Hafa

Image: 1606559 Journeyman, DJ, radio presenter, beat raconteur – it’s been hard to keep up with all of iZem‘s movements lately. The innovative Lisbon-based French producer has been hard at work on his debut LP Hafa, exploring the sounds of Latin America and North Africa in a vivid analogue-digital, genre-defying soundscape that is sure to leave your head spinning. Inspired by cultural greats like Jack Kerouac, Paul Bowles, Tahar Ben Jelloun and Matisse, iZem spent time soaking up the atmosphere at the inspiring Café Hafa, an idyllic cliff-top joint overlooking the strait of Gibraltar, in Tangier, Morocco, which has formed a golden backdrop to his debut LP. Brimming with soulful exoticism, personal narratives and adventurous collaborators, Hafa has been an experiment in taking on the afro-centric sounds of his journey to-date by incorporating modern, introspective songwriting and hybrid beats.

Often writing music whilst crossing continents, the only place iZem allows dust to settle is in the heart, heat and rhythms of his local-global future sounds. A decade of nomadism between Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Ireland and Portugal made way for a series of critically acclaimed EP’s and remixes for Soundway, GAMM, Far Out, Agogo, ZZK records, Wah Wah 45s, and Mais Um Discos. Arrival on the global, forward-thinking, artistically leftfield scene was predicted by Gilles Peterson, XLR8R, Okay Player and fellow tropical hed Quantic. iZem is an acronym for “In Ze Early Morning” and his debut album “Hafa” evokes new days dawning in far-off lands and stirring horizons of the present. So if you aren’t hearing iZem’s pastiche of future tropical rhythms and organic grooves on stations such as BBC, KCRW or Funkhaus Europa, then make sure you you catch him raising the dance floor temperature on one continent or another.

Various – Paz E Futebol 2
Friday, July 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Paz E Futebol 2

Image: 1603842 Sonar Kollektiv present the second volume of Paz E Futebol 2.

INFO:
Ten years have passed since the phenomenal success of the „Paz e Futebol“ (SK089CD / LP)
compilation, released on Sonar Kollektiv. Since then Germany went on to win the Football
World Cup in Brazil sparking an increased self-confidence and maybe inspiring the Berlin
musical institution Jazzanova to compile again a courageously eclectic showcase of Brazilian
music in all its facets and peculiarities.
“Paz e Futebol 2” is the ultimate smorgasbord of all Brazilian music, irrespective of era and
location, sporting the true and heartfelt Brazilian vibe. Similar to the football Brazil is known
for, where “Brazilian style of playing” means an extra technically ability and finesse, but also
an unmatched approach and skill within the sport. This affinity with skill is shown with this
expertly curated 19-track-strong compilation.
„Asking Eyes“ by RAFFAELA RENZULLI off her first and only album „Children Of The Light“
from 1987 kicks off extremely laid-back before driving the listeners round the bend just like
the ball skills by illustrious soccer star Neymar. This zest for life, this excessive friskiness is
the recurrent theme which is constantly present across all eras, continents and genres
covered on “Paz e Futebol 2”.For instance, “Dunks” by the meanwhile defunct Brighton based
project HARDKANDY. According to composer Tim Bidwell, this a track, when released on the
connoisseur label Wah Wah 45s in 2008, which wasn’t intended to hold a Brazilian reference
but was directed more towards afrobeat influences only now fits perfectly into the new
context and narrative of the compilation.
Also “Palmeiras” by the Argentinian combo CANDEIAS is taylor made for this voyage of
exploration all around the world in search of the Brazilian vibration. The extremely rare
album “Sambaiana” from 1976, which features next to “Palmeiras” another six gems of
Brazilian vitality, will incidentally be re-released on NOTES ON A JOURNEY. Also finding a
wider public than its initial release is the long forgotten 1983 LP “Num Dia Azul” by the couple

One of the songs off it, “Samba Walk”, was already a part of the first “Paz e Futebol”
compilation. Now another track off this extraordinary soulful record, “Calma Mulher”, is
included on Volume 2. Orlando Haddad, currently residing in Philadelphia, recalls how he
wrote the song for his wife in the early 70’s at Ipanema Beach: „It’s about a man saying to his
woman to calm down, as life is about much more than material possessions. It’s about love.“
Then New Zealander NATHAN HAINES steps up for the release with one of his 2003
recordings together with the two singers Marcus Begg and Vanessa Freeman: “U See That”, a
track oozing positive energy with its infectious message and beautiful arrangement. Another
song entailing exactly everything that also fascinated us so much with what Zico, Sokrates,
Eder, Falcao, Serginho etc. did on the pitch.
Talking about legends and veterans, ARY LOBO was one of the most successful singers and
composers of the 40’s and 50’s in Brazil’s northeast. It’s here where the lesser-known style
“Forró” is coming from and unifies a multitude of regionally rooted rhythms like Baião, Côco,
Rojão, Xaxado, Xote and Arrasta-Pé. Lobo, as one of the most popular solicitors of Forró, and
known for his superb phrasing and his folky feel, appears on “Paz e Futebol 2” with one of his
rare 7inch singles: The dancey “Nêgo São” from 1966.
Probably even more rare is the 7inch single by PENHA MARIA „Você Balanca O Meu Coracão
(Ou Sol Demais)“, released in 1968 on the Mocambo Rozenblit label from Recife. „É Só Balanco“
by JACKSON DO PANDEIRO & ALMIRA has a similar vibe to it. The song is off the scarce LP
“Coisas Nossas” from 1965, the short-spanned samba period of the bandleader normally also
closely connected to the Forró style. The rarity of the record is due to the fact that the record
company Philips thought these specific recordings were too experimental for Pandeiro and
simply pressed a lot less copies. Making this a true diggers anthem.
The compilation then switches things up with the illustrious KATE CEBERANO, the Diana
Krall of her mother country Australia. The title track off her fourth, 1990 released album “Like
Now” is a beautiful Brazil tribute being a rare occurrence for an Australian release, especially
at that time.
Next up is one of Gilles Peterson’s favourites, ED MOTTA. Born in 1971 in Rio De Janeiro, Motta
is the nephew of legendary Tim Maia and has recorded sixteen amazing LPs up to date and
continues to release music on a regular basis. 1997’s „Daqui Pro Méier“ is one hell of a dance
floor belter which he arranged together with Lincoln Olivetti. The latter has the distinction of
being one of Brazil’s true pioneers of electronic music and was one of the country’s most
sought-after songwriters and producers in the 70s and 80s.
A more recent Brazilian release, from 2012, is up next: „Dia de Furar Onda no Mar“ by LUCAS
SANTTANA is mesmerizing MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) and valid proof of a prosperous
future for the Brazilian legacy heralded on this compilation. With FAFA DE BELEM we take
another trip back into yesteryear. The larger-than-life singer and actress (and former sex
symbol) is still one of MPB’s most successful artists and delivers in her husky mezzosoprano a veritable showpiece of Brazilian serenity on the 1975 released Polydor single
“Naturalmente”.
„Céu Da Manágua“ by PIRY REIS is full of temper and hot-bloodedness. The song written in
1984 together with Geraldinho Carneiro originates from a time when the Brazilian people was
revolting against the oppressive (but soon ceasing) military dictatorship – attempting to fight
politics with music.

Finally you’ll get a samba take from the 1960 founded and still existing
combo OS ORIGINAIS DO SAMBA: „Canto Chorado“ from 1969 is a heartwarming tune
reminiscent of the pure elegance and finesse of Pelé.
It’s not always easy to find such extraordinaire songs with so much vocation and diversity.
„Tema Do Azambuja“ by AZAMBUJA & CIA with its perfect and dense arrangement and the
sombre synth chords is a perfect example of these unusual songs – a song that possesses the
beauty of the Brazilian sound and something worth presenting to the listeners all over planet
earth.
And to celebrate all these astonishing findings on this compilation we have two exclusive
songs contributed on top. Marc Friedli from Switzerland aka SKYMARK has absorbed the
Brazilian spirit in such a manner that by now he has moved his domicile to Rio De Janeiro
and here he records such beautiful songs like „Boa Noite Meu Filho (Mental)“ – singlehandedly playing all the instruments himself. In marked contrast to the second exclusive
song on this compilation, „Gafiera (Instrumental Trio Version)“. The original version can be
found on the Jazzanova album „Of All The Things“ which features the three musicians of the
Brazilian jazz funk band Azymuth. Alex Malheiros, Ivan Conti and José Roberto Bertram cut
the track during the unforgettable recording sessions in Berlin several times on their own
and one of these recordings sees the light of day for the very first time right here right now.
This way the second edition of “Paz e Futebol” finds a fair and beautiful ending. We hope the
passes, the crosses and the precise assists by Jazzanova have been received well by you the
listeners and you have gained even more taste for this style of music, which is always so
pleasant, delicate and ever so sleek but has always a positive effect on your soul and mind.
To be continued.

Dele Sosimi Ft. Prince Fatty & Nostalgia 77 – You No Fit Touch Am in Dub
Wednesday, June 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Dele Sosimi Ft. Prince Fatty & Nostalgia 77 – You No Fit Touch Am in Dub

Image: 1604797 “A dub version could be a stone killer”, predicted David Hutchison in his 4 star Mojo review of ‘You No Fit Touch Am’. And here it is: Afrobeat icon Dele Sosimi’s recent album gloriously re-imagined in dub by two production masters, Prince Fatty and Nostalgia 77.

“It was such a rush to have Prince Fatty and Nostalgia 77 work their magic on Dele’s album. With Fatty bringing the spirit of 80s On-U Sound, Mikey Dread and Mad Professor, and Ben Nostalgia having mixed Dele’s original LP, this was always going to be something very special.” Dom Servini (Wah Wah 45s)

‘You No Fit Touch Am’, Dele Sosimi’s first full-length album in almost a decade, was released by Wah Wah 45s in May 2015. It represented where Dele is today – something of an untouchable force in the music scene that he has always been such a vital part of. The album provided a musical representation of Dele’s strong socio-political opinions, as well as delivering classic song-writing that could have come straight out of 1970s Lagos.

Born in Hackney, East London, but soon to return to his parents’ native Nigeria at the age of four, Dele Sosimi was schooled and raised in Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s shadow at the height of early 70s Afrobeat. Having been chosen by Fela to join his band at somewhat of a tender age, he was still a young man when sharing

Fela’s Glastonbury stage in 1984, and became both Musical Director for both Fela’s Egypt 80 and FemiKuti’s Positive Force. After Fela’s passing in 1997, Dele went on to concentrate on his own solo career and, with diligent patience, carved out his own Afrobeat crown. In London, where he now resides, his Afrobeat Vibration all-nighters are charged with his passion, labours and his unrelenting spirit.

The Joe Tatton Trio – Bang Bang Boogaloo / Sunday Shade
Wednesday, March 9th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Joe Tatton Trio – Bang Bang Boogaloo / Sunday Shade

Image: 1602832 Since 2007 Joe Tatton has been the Organist of The New Mastersounds and has played on 7 studio albums with the quartet as well as performing with the likes of Maceo Parker and George Porter jr & Zigaboo Modeliste from The Meters. As well as performing and recording with The New Mastersounds he has also recorded 2 albums with The Haggis Horns, 1 with his own band “Rodina” and has supplied organ on the number one single “Put you records on” by Corinne a Bailey Rae. The Joe Tatton Trio comprises of Joe himself on piano with Sam Hobbs on drums and Neil Innes on double bass. Additional performances on the tunes come from The Sorcerer’s Pete Williams and Submotion Orchestra’s Danny Templeman on Percussion on “Bang Bang Boogaloo” and Chris Dawkins providing guitar & The Yorkshire Film & Television Orchestra’s Steve Parry providing brass on “Sunday Shade”.

Inspired by the soul jazz piano of Ramsey Lewis & Eddie Cano, “Bang Bang Boogaloo” is a Latin Jazz soul jazz in the style of Young Holt’s “Whack Whack”. Featuring driving unison figures from bass and piano laid over Congas and Timbales , this is a classic soul-jazz boogaloo aimed squarley at the dancefloor. The B-side “Sunday Shade” is an altogether more laid-back affair, with the percussion of the A-side replaced by cool Grant Greenesque guitar and soft brass laid on a mid-tempo groove from bass and drums.

Support comes from Craig Charles who played it on his BBC6 Music show in January as part of his “ones to watch in 2016” segment and will be playing it again at the time of release. Further support also comes from Snarky Puppy’s Bill Laurence and Wah Wah 45s Dom Servini.

Gideon Conn – Hip Hop Original
Friday, November 27th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Gideon Conn – Hip Hop Original

Image: 1601081 Wah Wah 45s are proud to present the third album, and first on the label, for vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, rapper, painter, carpenter, raconteur and one of the most talented and unique artists you’re likely to encounter – Gideon Conn. Hip Hop Original sums this man up in those three words, and it’s an album that tells tales of everyday life, love and relationships, politics, the law and even sport, all delivered in Gideon’s unique style. It also delivers some of Gideon’s most personal lyricism to date.

The album features some of the finest female vocalists working in the UK today – namely erstwhile Resonator, Bunty, Matthew Halsall collaborator and artist in her own right, Josephine Oniyama, a lady we first discovered via her work with The Boxettes, Yvette Riby-Williams, as well as regular collaborator, Hazel Tratt.

Hailing from Manchester, England, Gideon Conn is something of a one-off. His charming energy, quick wit and unique vocal often stun, and sometimes confuse, but in the end, audiences and listeners inevitably fall in love with this enigmatic, incomparable troubadour’s warmth and showmanship.

As much influenced by Joan as Policewoman and Simon & Garfunkle as by Aretha and Stevie or Mos Def and Talib Kweli, Gideon’s eclectic take on hip hop music is unparalleled with its soulful, humorous edge and intricate, inventive lyricism.

Having already garnered fans as diverse as Guy Garvey, Tom Robinson and Shaun Keaveney on BBC 6Music, Rob da Bank (Bestival) and John Kennedy (XFM) the next stage in Gideon’s story is already eagerly anticipated by radio, press, festival goers and the army of fans he’s garnered over the years.

The Gene Dudley Group (Ft.Anne Frankenstein & E) – Dynamite in the Still of the Night / Pearl Baby
Thursday, October 22nd, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Gene Dudley Group (Ft.Anne Frankenstein & E) – Dynamite in the Still of the Night / Pearl Baby

Image: 1600486 Wah Wah 45s are proud to present the brand new single from one-man horn driven funk music machine, The Gene Dudley Group. Following on from the recent club smasher – a cover of Todd Terje’s Inspector Norse – The Gene Dudley Group return with another dance floor destroyer! Original cut Dynamite in the Still of the Night features the powerhouse vocals of Anne Frankenstein (who also performed on big hitter No Trouble on the Mountain) just in time to cause explosions around your bonfire!

On the flip comes another funky cover version given the Gene Dudley treatment. In what is fast becoming something of a tradition, Mr Dudley has taken an early Wah Wah 45s release – in this case Benny Poole’s soul/jazz banger Pearl Baby, Pearl – and re-worked it for 2015. Fresh from his contributions to the Zambidoose album, and work with partner Myron for Stones Throw Records, Eric Boss AKA E (from Myron & E) adds some of his trademark vocals into the mix, making this package a double dance floor heavy hitter!

And don’t forget, The Gene Dudley Group’s sophomore LP, Zambidoose, is out now!

2 Pearl Baby, Pearl (feat. E) Available from 06.11.2015

The Gene Dudley Group – Zambidoose
Friday, August 7th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Gene Dudley Group – Zambidoose

Image: 1596779 Wah Wah 45s are proud to present the sophomore album release from forward thinking horn driven funk music machine, The Gene Dudley Group. Following on from 2013’s debut long-player, Saturday Shifting, where Gene Dudley played almost every note himself, his second offering is very much a product of the relationships he’s built up over the past two years. Most notably these have been with vocalists, and particularly when the group got the chance to tour Europe with Stones Throw artists Myron & E in the summer of 2014. This resulted in E contributing to two vocal cuts to the new album, along with hotly tipped U.S. vocalist Ishtar.

Another collaboration that blossomed was with London powerhouse soul vocalist and acclaimed funk DJ Anne Frankenstein. The pair hooked up for Gene’s cover of Richard “Groove” Holmes’ No Trouble on the Mountain, released as a 7″ single last year. It’s a tune that appears on the album alongside two hot new offerings from Dudley and Frankenstein – namely the disco flavoured soul monster Dynamite in the Still of the Night, and mid-tempo funk nugget, Jackpot.

Add to that some classic Dudley horn work on The Arm Wrestling Channel and Do The Cookie Dough Throw, albeit with one eye firmly on the dance floor, some tasty tropical and dub flavours on Tiger Jaw, Stevie Flare and the title track, plus a very cheeky Todd Terje cover (approved by the man himself!) and you have a statement of intent from one of the UK’s finest and most exciting producers and multi-instrumentalists.

“Inspector Norse will be useful this summer!’?*” – Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music)
“Lovely, summery, slinky soul!’?*” – Craig Charles (BBC 6Music)

Ambassadeurs – Patterns

Image: 1597932 ‘Patterns’ is the debut album from the much-championed UK electronica artist, Ambassadeurs.

Ambassadeurs widescreen sound spans bass heavy, ethereal electronica, through to dark ambient moments, and shimmering, melodic techno. His supporters to date include The Fader, Mixmag, Vice, iD, Clash, XLR8R, This Is Fake DIY, Dancing Astronaut, The Sound You Need, Earmilk, Radio 1 (Phil Taggart, Monki, SOHN, and Huw Stephens), 6 Music and a host of global tastemaker blogs. Over the past two years, Ambassadeurs has worked hard to develop his live set – one which marries his leftfield sound with surrealist videography – winning diverse support slots with the likes of ODESZA, Danny Brown, Machinedrum, Gold Panda, and more, his forthcoming US tour will see him join Mad Decent’s Daktyl – evidence of Ambassadeurs increasingly wide appeal, and a follow-up to his debut 30 date support tour with the aforementioned ODESZA.

The Gene Dudley Group – I’ve Changed (Ft. E) / Inspector Norse
Thursday, June 18th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Gene Dudley Group – I’ve Changed (Ft. E) / Inspector Norse

Image: 1597850 Wah Wah 45s are proud to present the brand new single from one-man horn driven funk music machine, The Gene Dudley Group. Following on from last year’s dance floor smash, No Trouble on the Mountain, featuring Anne Frankenstein on the microphone, Gene Dudley returns with more soulful vocals, and a sure fire festival hit for 2015. This time the vocals come courtesy of one half of U.S. duo Myron & E (Stones Throw) with the latter of the pair lending his velvet tones to the hypnotic, sweet summer soul of the BBC 6Music favourite, I’ve Changed.

On the flip comes a secret weapon every DJ will be after over the festival period. Gene’s version of Todd Terje’s Inspector Norse is a funk driven horn-fest and takes the modern dance floor classic into exciting new areas. So much so, that it can already count Gilles Peterson and even Terje himself as fans!

Look out for the Gene Dudley Group’s sophomore LP, Zambidoose, dropping this July and accompanied by a plethora of gigs across the UK with the full live Gene Dudley Group band.

Tracklisting
1. I’ve Changed (feat. E)
2. Inspector Norse Available from 26.06.2015

The Gene Dudley Group – Zambidoose
Friday, June 5th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Gene Dudley Group – Zambidoose

– Todd Terje (Olsen Records, Norway)
“Inspector Norse wird diesen Sommer hilfreich sein!” – Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music, UK)
“Lieblich, sommerlicher, verführerischer Soul!” – Craig Charles (BBC 6Music, UK) Available from 17.07.2015

Dele Sosimi – You No Fit Touch Am
Friday, April 17th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Dele Sosimi – You No Fit Touch Am

Stimmen:
“Absolutely loving this! Some of the best new afrobeat I’ve heard in a long long time.” – Pedestrian (2nd Drop)
“Totally on this one!” – DJ Simbad (Brownswood)
“This album could be one of the highlights of 2015. 4/5” – Kev Beadle (Solar Radio) Available from 29.05.2015

Boca 45 – Dig Eat Beats Repeat
Wednesday, February 25th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Boca 45 – Dig Eat Beats Repeat

Image: 1595663 Dig, Eat, Beats, Repeat – four words that sum up an average day in the life of Boca 45. Known as somewhat of a Bristol institution from his early days selling hip hop from behind the counter of the seminal Purple Penguin record shop, his Dynamo Productions pseudonym with Andy Smith (Portishead) and his countless DJ residencies and appearances across the city. More recently he has branched out with the psyche rock/hip hop/pop stylings of the Domino Records-signed Malachai (Zane Lowe’s “Hottest Record In The World”) and the cinematic Dolman project alongside composer Ben Salisbury. It’s safe to say Scott Hendy has worn a few caps in his time.

Returning to his Boca 45 alter-ego, for this – his third album under the name, finds him revisiting his b-boy roots and creating an album almost purely from found sounds, beats & samples. As an avid record collector and well traveled DJ, he has amassed a wealth of sources, be it old school block party rap, rare Latin percussion, progressive rock wigouts or obscure eastern European oddities, it all goes into the mix to create his unique style – steeped in heritage, but looking firmly forward.

Another link in the story is Boca’s affinity with the Big Apple – from early digging trips and gigs there, he has forged a strong bond with the spiritual home of hip hop. So much so, that the only vocalists that appear on the album are NYC based. Having worked with Stephanie McKay on his debut album “Pitch Sounds” (Grand Central Records) she steps up once again to bless “Mr Big Sun”, “Freedom Train” and “Parking Space” – her powerful soul voice perfecting each track and sounding like she’s got a lot more left to prove.

Also featured are Brooklyn MCs The Good People aka Emskee and The Saint. From the block busting “We’re Right Here” (as supported on BBC6 Music by Huey Morgan) to the party starting “People Are You Ready?” their old school flow sits perfectly on Boca’s beats and cements the Bristol to Bronx partnership further.

Other tracks such as “45 Live” and “Kool Herc’s Echo Chamber” show his diverse cut & paste party rockin’ ability, whist “BK Speakeasy” and “Lafayette Afterglow” offer a deeper filmic side to his production.

With a hefty DJ schedule alongside a hefty box of 45s and the skills to match, be sure to catch Boca 45 in a club near you soon!

“…like being rabbit punched in the face with killer tune after killer tune & thats a rare thing nowadays” – Geoff Barrow (Portishead)
“Luxury beats and killer samples – once the needle hits the record you’re hooked!” – Sergio Pizzorno (Kasabian)
“Dope LP! What can I say, I’m a cut and paste kinda guy!” – DJ Yoda
“Deep, heavy beats, fluid funk and sinuous spoken words and rhymes bind this together. Steph McKay’s vocal spots are a highlight for me” – DJ Food (Ninja Tune)
“A beautifully gritty slice of Bristolian hip hop, funk and soul. Good music for good people. The world needs more music like this. I love it.” – Brad Baloo (The Nextmen)
“Great to have Boca back, a good to see his musical relationship with Steph McKay continuing to go from strength to strength bringing some of the highlights of what is a top notch LP” – Dom Servini (Wah Wah 45s)
“Boca 45 sticks to his undisputed formula and delivers only the freshest original breaks combined with the great talents of the Good People and the always amazing Stephanie McKay. Top hitter of this year so far!” – Marc Hype (Dusty Donuts)

The Gene Dudley Group (FT.Anne Frankenstein) – No Trouble on the Mountain / Stevie Flare
Friday, September 19th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Gene Dudley Group (FT.Anne Frankenstein) – No Trouble on the Mountain / Stevie Flare

Image: 1592608 Wah Wah 45s are proud to present the brand new single from one-man horn driven funk music machine, The Gene Dudley Group. Following on from last year’s debut long-player, and a run of gigs and festivals with his band, including touring Europe as Stones Throw artists Myron & E’s new backing band, Gene Dudley returns with a taste of things to come and his first ever vocal offering on 7-inches of wax. Those vocals come courtesy of London singer and erstwhile DJ, the wonderfully monikered Anne Frankenstein, whose contribution to Gene’s canny cover of Richard “Groove” Holmes’ classic No Trouble On The Mountain is something of a floor filler and a rather fitting release in Wah Wah 45s’ fifteenth year, as Holmes’ original was one of the label’s first ever 7-inch releases! On the flip comes the first real flavour of Gene’s forthcoming sophomore LP, due to drop (on vinyl too!) this November. Stevie Flare is a much more up-tempo and foot friendly affair than previously outings, and has something of a tropical feel courtesy of warm highlife style guitars as well as those trademark Gene Dudley horns.

Look out for the Gene Dudley Group live band playing at a venue near you this autumn, including a special session at London’s Jazz Cafe on October 24thfor none other than BBC 6Music’s funk & soul ambassador, Craig Charles!

“Wonderful!” – Craig Charles (BBC Radio 2)

“Love this!” – DJ Yoda (Various)

Image: 1586116 Post-Yacht-Rock-Kraut-Disco-Prog-Pop. More is More.

The Gene Dudley Group – Saturday Shifting
Thursday, August 15th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Gene Dudley Group – Saturday Shifting

“Something really special.” – Huey Morgan
“There is no ‘negotiation’. The Gene Dudley Group is the real deal!” – Soulbounce.com
“This is DOPE and I will play on the Bandcamp Weekly next week. NICE.” – Andrew Jervis
“A contender for Album of the Year, and it’s only May” – Generation Radio
“Wah Wah 45s’ never-ending hunt for exciting funk talent continues as they introduce the one-man-wonder Gene Dudley. A highly talented multi-instrumentalist, Gene plays every note you hear on this 7”, from the tight raspberry blowing horns to the swish-tickling drums. The title track is a Daptone-esque doo-wop with a neat refrain and simple Q&A structure, while “THe New Lots Of Cooperstown” meanders a little more into sombre soul territory. Two stunning instrumentals, one memorable introduction – Gene Dudley’s talents are likely to take him far.” – Juno Records Available from 26.07.2013

Paper Tiger – The Sting
Sunday, June 2nd, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Paper Tiger – The Sting

Image: 1581302 Hip hop / electronica outfit from Leeds, Paper Tiger, unleash their final offering before the release of their debut album this summer, and it comes complete with a very special guest. Having recently supported Stone’s Throw recording’s NYC-based MC Homeboy Sandman at his sell out London show, both camps hit it off immediately and in no time at all a collaboration between the two was complete! “The Sting” sees the U.S. rapper trade rhymes with Paper Tiger’s very own Raphael Attar, telling the story of a lost and rediscovered first love – a story with a sting in the tail. “The Sting” has a melodic, “Golden Era” feel, but with Paper Tiger’s trademark production edge, which is even more evident on the very tasty “…And Then I Bounced” remixed, which chops up the vocals and lets the beats do the talking. Look out for live shows from Paper Tiger in the next few months across the country, and for that debut long-player, due for release on Wah Wah 45s in July.

“Isn’t it lovely? Wonderful stuff.” (Lauren Laverne)
“This is wicked.” (Alex Nut)

The Gene Dudley Group – The Fawcett Negotiation
Monday, May 27th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Gene Dudley Group – The Fawcett Negotiation

Image: 1581193 The Gene Dudley Group represents an outpouring of deep soul and funk music from obscenely talented 27 year-old multi-instrumentalist residing in North London, Gene Dudley. Both tracks on the debut release from this one-man band were recorded in Gene’s bedroom studio and feature him on trumpet, saxophone, drums, bass, guitar and piano. Fans of labels like Truth & Soul and Daptone will relish these sonorous soulful offerings, and will no doubt be hotly anticipating the debut long-player, due for release this summer on Wah Wah 45s.

In the live arena, rather than trying to play all the instruments himself, Gene deploys a quartet of top notch young musicians to help him out (whilst Gene mixes it up between bass and keys throughout the set) as witnessed at the recent Hot 8 Brass Band gig in London, The Gene Dudley Group’s debut live show.

Look out for the band performing live, and launching the single, on Record Store Day (April 20th) at Audio Gold in Crouch End, and watch this space for so much more to come from this new star of the deep funk and soul scene.

Tracklisting

1. The Fawcett Negotiation
2. The New Lots Of Cooperstown Available from 06.05.2013
