Wayne Carter – Mad Mouth Woman / Wahoo, Wahoo, Wahoo
Thursday, February 13th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Wayne Carter – Mad Mouth Woman / Wahoo, Wahoo, Wahoo

Image: 1587188 In the early 1970s Wayne Carter recorded these two beautiful sides together with drummer Virgil “Pat” Patton and saxophonist Luther Taylor. Wayne was a Supper Club musician, which meant, “Funk was not permitted.” This standard precluded him from selling his record at gigs. So he tucked his records away, handing out a few to friends and family without any professional distribution. This is probably the reason why any of his three 45rpm singles are so damn hard to find nowadays. It was high-time for a re-issue of his two finest recordings, and here you go!

“Wahoo, Wahoo, Wahoo” and “Mad Mouth Woman“ are also featured on the 12” EP “Wayne Carter & the Organ Twisters” (Mootrey’s Studio MS-9022).

Key-selling points:
– original label artwork
– limited to 333 hand-numbered copies
– officially licensed

Mwahaha – Mwahaha
Thursday, July 4th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Mwahaha – Mwahaha

Image: 1579638 What’s in a name? A little over a year ago this question was asked of Mwahaha (Oakland, CA) in regard to both
their name, and their self-titled independent debut. The answer? A flurry of accolades, a performance at Warp
Records’ SXSW showcase, shout outs from NPR & Spin Magazine amongst others, and a tour of the South and
the Midwest including 2012’s Treefort Festival. All of the attention drew the eye of Plug Research, who
subsequently signed the band. Now Mwahaha will be re-issued by the label world-wide and will appear for the
first tine on vinyl (AT LAST!), complete with new tracks not found on the original release, creating an expanded
edition.
The band consists of Ross Peacock (formerly of Clipd Beaks) and brothers Nathan and Cyrus Tilton (all three
were previously in the Bay Area cult band NED). Throbbing ebb and flow, electronic undercurrents and elated
pop flourishes characterize the album. Instruments are filtered through an array of analogue synths, analog
drum machines exist in harmony with live drums, and other morphing walls of sound and spiraling sonic
landscapes, Peacock’s lyrics and often times haunting vocals distinctly ground the album.
The band tracked most of the album at their own studio with Eil Crews (Deerhoof, tUnE-yArDs, WHY?,
Exray’s), who also mixed the album at New and Improved Studios in Oakland, CA. Inspiration was drawn from
the tangible energy of the Oakland music scene which continues to burst with new bands and collaborations.
Mwahaha took full advantage of this, enlisting friends from other bands to lend drum parts, as well as the
singular voice of Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs on one of the album’s stand-outs “Love.” Anticon’s Odd Nosdam
also provided a notable remix upon the album’s original release as well.
The members of Mwahaha have been writing and performing together for close to 10 years in various bands.
Mwahaha is a giant leap forward, achieving greater rewards while still pursuing sonic exploration. The band is
already hard at work on their follow-up release for Plug Research and continues to adhere to their original tenet:
“There are times you see a band perform and you’re blown away by the live show, but you bring the album home
and that special something just isn’t captured in the recordings,” Peacock says. “We weren’t going to perform
live until we had a record that the live show would have to live up to…something that documented the changes
and struggles we all deal with, but with space to grow with and into what the listener needs it to be.”
The past year has been a whirlwind, but the band is firmly planted in the present with their gaze set on the
horizon. Indeed, it seems that Mwahaha is having the last laugh after all.

KEY SELLING POINTS:
• This album was originally released in very limited release by the band, but is now being reissued by Plug Research including 2 bonus tracks.
• Features Merril Garbus (tUnE-yArDs) on the track ”Love”
• Videos for “Love” and “Rainbow Diamond” are available on YouTube and have been featured on MTV Hive and Wired.
• The band plays consistently in Northern California, but a US tour is planned for 2013.
• Publicity & Radio Promotion will be handled by Terrorbird.

“A cleverly plotted head trip disguised as a ramshackle mess, the debut
full-length from this psychedelic Oakland quartet turns
brain-scrambling confusion into a fine art.” – SPIN

“Mwahaha never stops surprising, and each song is jam-packed with
feel-good oddities.” – Impose Magazine

“The band sounds more than a little bit like TV On The Radio
sometimes, but – as you may have gathered from its moniker – it is far
more playful.” – San Francisco Weekly

Bohannon – Stop & Go
Wednesday, October 25th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Bohannon – Stop & Go

Image: 1616310 Even if Hamilton Bohannon had never started his
own solo musical project, he would have a long and
rich background to his name. Before the 60s had
ended he’d played in local bands with Jimi Hendrix,
toured as a drummer with Stevie Wonder, and
served as the bandleader and arranger at Motown,
providing backing for top-like acts like Smokey
Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, and many
more. Gradually he made his way to Los Angeles to
sign with Dakar Records in 1972, recording and
releasing his debut album the next year, after
recruiting a backing band which included session
giants like Ray Parker Jr, Wah Wah Watson, Eddie
Watkins, and Leroy Emmanuel, to name but a few.
Stop & Go was released in 1973, and featured a
tried and true formula of hard-hitting, bass-heavy,
accented disco-funk. Although the album was only
a muted success on the Hot 100 charts, it excelled
on the club charts, making dancefloor hits out of
tracks like “The Pimp Walk”, “It’s Time For Peace”,
and “The Stop & Go.” It also featured Bohannon’s
most well-known tracks, in the club banger “Save
Their Souls”, which over time became a
frequently-used well of sampling material, notably
on tracks by Jay-Z, Large Professor, Kool G Rap,
Public Enemy, and DJ Vadim, among many others.

A1. The Stop & Go
A2. Getting To The Other Side
A3. The Pimp Walk
A4. Run It On Down Mr. D.J.

Hank Carbo – Fox in a Mini Skirt / Bad Luck
Wednesday, July 19th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Hank Carbo – Fox in a Mini Skirt / Bad Luck

Image: 1610974 It’s time for another 7″ foot-stomping bonanza from Rocafort Records, digging deep into the rich New Orleans repertoire of the Carbo family. All brothers were heavily involved in the 60s Crescent City funk scene, so tight and ‘on the one’ that it’s easy to understand why Hank suspects a bit of plagiarism from the Godfather himself.

“Fox in a mini skirt” is slice of soulful cheek and attitude, based on foxy beauty who once slunk across the dance floor at one of his gigs. Popular on the Northern Soul scene, it matches vocal urgency with a driving beat fuelled along by manic drums, guitars and horns. The irresistible background hey hey hey’s and funky funky broadway’s make it instantly memorable and immediately danceable.

“Bad Luck” (not to be confused with the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes classic) is a slower paced funk stinker, screaming out JB horns and wah wah guitars à la ‘Ain’t it funky now’. In keeping with the depth of New Orleans songwriting, the lyrics are worth a listen and reveal a heartfelt plea “If it weren’t for bad luck, I wouldn’t have no luck at all”. In fact, the whole song is based on a spell of unfortunate circumstances involving Hank’s sideswiped new car and an erroneous warrant for his arrest. However, the only real crime committed here is that at 2’22”, this track is shockingly over too soon!

Tim Maia – Tim Maia (180g)
Wednesday, December 7th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Tim Maia – Tim Maia (180g)

Image: 1607707 First vinyl reissue of this 1977 LP by one of the great figures of Brazilian music. Brilliant tracks like ‘É necessário’, ‘Verão carioca’, ‘Venha dormir em casa’ or ‘Musica para Betinha’ make it one of the strongest albums to come out of Brazil in the 1970s. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180g vinyl.

Tim Maia was born in 1942 in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro and started his musical career at an early age, along with close friends such as Roberto Carlos or Jorge Ben. Carlos would eventually help him to get a deal for his first single at CBS.

During the 70s Maia started to incorporate soul and funk elements into his style. After a two-year period involvement in the Racional cult in Brazil, Maia’s funky style was still at its best when he released this album in 1977. It was his first and only recording for Som Livre, the legendary label that became extremely popular due to the many soap operas soundtracks in its extensive catalogue.

This self titled LP deserves to be shortlisted among Maia’s top records. It features killer tunes like the anthemic ‘É necessário’, undoubtedly one of the best songs in his career, and also boogie gems such as ‘Verão carioca’ or ‘Venha dormir em casa’ that show obvious influences by some of the biggest American soul artists of the time. It also contains intimate vocal delights as in the lovely smooth tune ‘Musica para Betinha’ or even straight funky instrumentals like ‘Flores belas’. The string arrangements, wah wah guitars, horns, deep vocals… make this recording a milestone in the so-called “Black Movement” in Rio, where artists like Toni Tornado, Banda Black Rio and Maia himself were bringing in the funky sounds of America and mixing them with local rhythms like samba.

TRACKLISTING:

1. Pense Menos
2. Sem Você
3. Verão Carioca
4. Feito Para Dançar
5. É Necessário
6. Leva O Meu Blue
7. Venha Dormir Em Casa
8. Música Para Betinha

The Milk – Live At The Union Chapel
Wednesday, December 7th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Milk – Live At The Union Chapel

Image: 1607725 On the hot, summer evening of 8th July 2016, Wah Wah 45s and their four-piece soul band, The Milk, realised a long-time ambition as the epic sounds of ‘Favourite Worry’ filled a sold-out Union Chapel. Taking to the stage at the iconic venue which has been home to some of London’s most legendary live shows, from the first Big Chill events to Björk to Terry Callier, was an honour that was understood by all.

So on that night, accompanied by beautiful string and brass sections, the band delivered a live performance that none of the 800 fans, packed into those hallowed pews, will ever forget.

When you mention certain venue names, bands and labels start to think about live recordings and the Union Chapel is one of them. But it was only when drummer and producer Mitch began sending round rough mixes of the recordings that the band and label realised they had something very special on their hands.

Being a great live band is a fundamental part of what makes The Milk who they are. These recordings really demonstrate the closeness of the four men, their solid work ethic, their exceptional ability as performers and their connection with their fans. But above all, it showcases their songs and songwriting in the best possible way.

And while from the audience’s standpoint everything sounded and looked grandiose, the band themselves were living a very memorable experience on stage, as perfectly described by Dan Le Gresley below:

“It’s very rare that we get the chance to recreate our music live with the same instrumentation and attitude in which it was first created. The ambiance of the smokey chambers of the Union Chapel was strangely similar to the medieval barn from which the music of Favourite Worry was brought to life. We can’t put our fingers on why, maybe the history, maybe the sense of solidarity among us – either way, if you were there then you shared in something truly special. It is for this reason that we are very proud to release this show as our first live album – a gig that we will always cherish.

Our eleven strong ensemble did the Gospel-soaked halls of the Union Chapel venue proud and we are very grateful that our wonderful string section and our awesome brass section were able to join us for the night. With their help, we were able to capture, in a live context, a true reflection of the bands soul for the first time.”

Whether it’s hearing the vast sound of Wanderlust as it steps up that key in the final moments, or revisiting seldom played hits from the first album, ‘Tales From The Thames Delta’, there is something here for fans old and new.

WEWANTSOUNDS is back with FEELING GOOD, a compilation of rare Spiritual Jazz and Funk grooves culled from legendary Producer BOB SHAD’s Mainstream Records. The compilation features insightful sleevenotes by Judd Apatow, Bob Shad’s grandson and was supervised by Matt Robin,(producer of theJazzactuel BYG boxset with Thurston Moore). Alice Clark’s cult classic “Never Did I Stop Loving You” features here alongside many gems uncovered for the first time on this compilation, all remastered from the original tapes.

From working with music Titans such as Charlie Parker and Lightnin’ Hopkins in the 40s, founding the EmArcy jazz label in the 50s and discovering Janis Joplin in the 60s, Bob Shad has had an incredible influence. This handpicked selection gives you a little taster for the diversity of Bob Shad’s Sound from the early 70s when he turned to Deep and soulful Jazz alongside labels like Flying Dutchman and Strata East. Drenched in modal Fender Rhodes keys, spiritual sax and flute solos, deep percussions and funky beats, these albums have slowly been rediscovered by a new generation of DJs, hip hop producers and vinyl junkies all around the world.

From Afrique’s cult classic “House of the Rising Funk” and its funky wah wah frenzy to Hadley Caliman’s deep jazz Flute ode, From one of Clark Terry’s famous Mumbles (Shad produced the original with Oscar Peterson) to Jack Wilkins’ “Red Clay” sampled by both A Tribe Called Quest and Chance the Rapper. A Soul Music lover, Shad also excelled in soul divas and produced Ellerine Harding, Maxine Weldon and of course the mighty Alice Clark, whose original album on Mainstream exchanges hands for around 500$ these days.

To close the compilation in style, Carmen McRae, one of Shad’s long time collaborators, gives a soulful, conga-led version of the classic Feelin’ Good a song made famous by Nina Simone. A superb minimalist version showcasing the unique sound of Bob Shad, a passionate, spirited and fiercely independent record producer who lived for the music.

Izem – Hafa
Friday, September 23rd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Izem – Hafa

Image: 1606559 Journeyman, DJ, radio presenter, beat raconteur – it’s been hard to keep up with all of iZem‘s movements lately. The innovative Lisbon-based French producer has been hard at work on his debut LP Hafa, exploring the sounds of Latin America and North Africa in a vivid analogue-digital, genre-defying soundscape that is sure to leave your head spinning. Inspired by cultural greats like Jack Kerouac, Paul Bowles, Tahar Ben Jelloun and Matisse, iZem spent time soaking up the atmosphere at the inspiring Café Hafa, an idyllic cliff-top joint overlooking the strait of Gibraltar, in Tangier, Morocco, which has formed a golden backdrop to his debut LP. Brimming with soulful exoticism, personal narratives and adventurous collaborators, Hafa has been an experiment in taking on the afro-centric sounds of his journey to-date by incorporating modern, introspective songwriting and hybrid beats.

Often writing music whilst crossing continents, the only place iZem allows dust to settle is in the heart, heat and rhythms of his local-global future sounds. A decade of nomadism between Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Ireland and Portugal made way for a series of critically acclaimed EP’s and remixes for Soundway, GAMM, Far Out, Agogo, ZZK records, Wah Wah 45s, and Mais Um Discos. Arrival on the global, forward-thinking, artistically leftfield scene was predicted by Gilles Peterson, XLR8R, Okay Player and fellow tropical hed Quantic. iZem is an acronym for “In Ze Early Morning” and his debut album “Hafa” evokes new days dawning in far-off lands and stirring horizons of the present. So if you aren’t hearing iZem’s pastiche of future tropical rhythms and organic grooves on stations such as BBC, KCRW or Funkhaus Europa, then make sure you you catch him raising the dance floor temperature on one continent or another.

Rachel Modest – I Try / Forbidden Love
Thursday, August 25th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Rachel Modest – I Try / Forbidden Love

Image: 1606009 Rachel Modest made her debut for ATA Records last year with her a version of “I, Who Have Nothing” that was recorded for the label’s free download series “Hard Work, No Pay”, and received support and airplay from Craig Charles and Wah Wah 45’s Dom Servini. Later in the year she co-wrote and guested on the debut 45 by The Magnificent Tape Band (“Patterns In My Mind”) that received support and airplay from Gilles Peterson & Dom servini and was featured as mpfree of the week on Lauren Laverne’s BBC6 Music show where it was described as “Al Green meets Portishead”.

“I Try/Forbidden Love” is her solo debut for the label and both tracks were produced during the sessions for her upcoming solo LP. As with all the releases from ATA Records the tracks were co-written with the heads of the Label Neil Innes and Pete Williams, who were also behind the debut album by The Sorcerers as well as The Magnificent Tape Band and Joe Tatton Trio singles released earlier in the year. Inviting inevitable comparisons to the recent releases from Daptone Records, “I Try” is a soulful mid-tempo track that draws its influences from the likes of Dee Dee Warwick, Ann Peebles, Madeline Bell and Dusty Springfield. Creeping guitar & bass and the understated backing vocals of the verse make way for the uplifting chorus and Rachel’s soaring vocal performance. “Forbidden Love” is a darker track that acts as the perfect foil for her powerful vocal performance and a suitable contrast to the A side.

Airplay and dj support is expected from Craig Charles (BBC6 Music, Radio 2), Gilles Peterson (BBC6 Music), Lauren Laverne (BBC6 Music), Trevor Nelson (Radio 2), Jamie Cullum (Radio 2) with reviews forthcoming in Blues and Soul and Shindig magazines.

Various – Paz E Futebol 2
Friday, July 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Paz E Futebol 2

Image: 1603842 Sonar Kollektiv present the second volume of Paz E Futebol 2.

INFO:
Ten years have passed since the phenomenal success of the „Paz e Futebol“ (SK089CD / LP)
compilation, released on Sonar Kollektiv. Since then Germany went on to win the Football
World Cup in Brazil sparking an increased self-confidence and maybe inspiring the Berlin
musical institution Jazzanova to compile again a courageously eclectic showcase of Brazilian
music in all its facets and peculiarities.
“Paz e Futebol 2” is the ultimate smorgasbord of all Brazilian music, irrespective of era and
location, sporting the true and heartfelt Brazilian vibe. Similar to the football Brazil is known
for, where “Brazilian style of playing” means an extra technically ability and finesse, but also
an unmatched approach and skill within the sport. This affinity with skill is shown with this
expertly curated 19-track-strong compilation.
„Asking Eyes“ by RAFFAELA RENZULLI off her first and only album „Children Of The Light“
from 1987 kicks off extremely laid-back before driving the listeners round the bend just like
the ball skills by illustrious soccer star Neymar. This zest for life, this excessive friskiness is
the recurrent theme which is constantly present across all eras, continents and genres
covered on “Paz e Futebol 2”.For instance, “Dunks” by the meanwhile defunct Brighton based
project HARDKANDY. According to composer Tim Bidwell, this a track, when released on the
connoisseur label Wah Wah 45s in 2008, which wasn’t intended to hold a Brazilian reference
but was directed more towards afrobeat influences only now fits perfectly into the new
context and narrative of the compilation.
Also “Palmeiras” by the Argentinian combo CANDEIAS is taylor made for this voyage of
exploration all around the world in search of the Brazilian vibration. The extremely rare
album “Sambaiana” from 1976, which features next to “Palmeiras” another six gems of
Brazilian vitality, will incidentally be re-released on NOTES ON A JOURNEY. Also finding a
wider public than its initial release is the long forgotten 1983 LP “Num Dia Azul” by the couple

One of the songs off it, “Samba Walk”, was already a part of the first “Paz e Futebol”
compilation. Now another track off this extraordinary soulful record, “Calma Mulher”, is
included on Volume 2. Orlando Haddad, currently residing in Philadelphia, recalls how he
wrote the song for his wife in the early 70’s at Ipanema Beach: „It’s about a man saying to his
woman to calm down, as life is about much more than material possessions. It’s about love.“
Then New Zealander NATHAN HAINES steps up for the release with one of his 2003
recordings together with the two singers Marcus Begg and Vanessa Freeman: “U See That”, a
track oozing positive energy with its infectious message and beautiful arrangement. Another
song entailing exactly everything that also fascinated us so much with what Zico, Sokrates,
Eder, Falcao, Serginho etc. did on the pitch.
Talking about legends and veterans, ARY LOBO was one of the most successful singers and
composers of the 40’s and 50’s in Brazil’s northeast. It’s here where the lesser-known style
“Forró” is coming from and unifies a multitude of regionally rooted rhythms like Baião, Côco,
Rojão, Xaxado, Xote and Arrasta-Pé. Lobo, as one of the most popular solicitors of Forró, and
known for his superb phrasing and his folky feel, appears on “Paz e Futebol 2” with one of his
rare 7inch singles: The dancey “Nêgo São” from 1966.
Probably even more rare is the 7inch single by PENHA MARIA „Você Balanca O Meu Coracão
(Ou Sol Demais)“, released in 1968 on the Mocambo Rozenblit label from Recife. „É Só Balanco“
by JACKSON DO PANDEIRO & ALMIRA has a similar vibe to it. The song is off the scarce LP
“Coisas Nossas” from 1965, the short-spanned samba period of the bandleader normally also
closely connected to the Forró style. The rarity of the record is due to the fact that the record
company Philips thought these specific recordings were too experimental for Pandeiro and
simply pressed a lot less copies. Making this a true diggers anthem.
The compilation then switches things up with the illustrious KATE CEBERANO, the Diana
Krall of her mother country Australia. The title track off her fourth, 1990 released album “Like
Now” is a beautiful Brazil tribute being a rare occurrence for an Australian release, especially
at that time.
Next up is one of Gilles Peterson’s favourites, ED MOTTA. Born in 1971 in Rio De Janeiro, Motta
is the nephew of legendary Tim Maia and has recorded sixteen amazing LPs up to date and
continues to release music on a regular basis. 1997’s „Daqui Pro Méier“ is one hell of a dance
floor belter which he arranged together with Lincoln Olivetti. The latter has the distinction of
being one of Brazil’s true pioneers of electronic music and was one of the country’s most
sought-after songwriters and producers in the 70s and 80s.
A more recent Brazilian release, from 2012, is up next: „Dia de Furar Onda no Mar“ by LUCAS
SANTTANA is mesmerizing MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) and valid proof of a prosperous
future for the Brazilian legacy heralded on this compilation. With FAFA DE BELEM we take
another trip back into yesteryear. The larger-than-life singer and actress (and former sex
symbol) is still one of MPB’s most successful artists and delivers in her husky mezzosoprano a veritable showpiece of Brazilian serenity on the 1975 released Polydor single
“Naturalmente”.
„Céu Da Manágua“ by PIRY REIS is full of temper and hot-bloodedness. The song written in
1984 together with Geraldinho Carneiro originates from a time when the Brazilian people was
revolting against the oppressive (but soon ceasing) military dictatorship – attempting to fight
politics with music.

Finally you’ll get a samba take from the 1960 founded and still existing
combo OS ORIGINAIS DO SAMBA: „Canto Chorado“ from 1969 is a heartwarming tune
reminiscent of the pure elegance and finesse of Pelé.
It’s not always easy to find such extraordinaire songs with so much vocation and diversity.
„Tema Do Azambuja“ by AZAMBUJA & CIA with its perfect and dense arrangement and the
sombre synth chords is a perfect example of these unusual songs – a song that possesses the
beauty of the Brazilian sound and something worth presenting to the listeners all over planet
earth.
And to celebrate all these astonishing findings on this compilation we have two exclusive
songs contributed on top. Marc Friedli from Switzerland aka SKYMARK has absorbed the
Brazilian spirit in such a manner that by now he has moved his domicile to Rio De Janeiro
and here he records such beautiful songs like „Boa Noite Meu Filho (Mental)“ – singlehandedly playing all the instruments himself. In marked contrast to the second exclusive
song on this compilation, „Gafiera (Instrumental Trio Version)“. The original version can be
found on the Jazzanova album „Of All The Things“ which features the three musicians of the
Brazilian jazz funk band Azymuth. Alex Malheiros, Ivan Conti and José Roberto Bertram cut
the track during the unforgettable recording sessions in Berlin several times on their own
and one of these recordings sees the light of day for the very first time right here right now.
This way the second edition of “Paz e Futebol” finds a fair and beautiful ending. We hope the
passes, the crosses and the precise assists by Jazzanova have been received well by you the
listeners and you have gained even more taste for this style of music, which is always so
pleasant, delicate and ever so sleek but has always a positive effect on your soul and mind.
To be continued.

Dele Sosimi Ft. Prince Fatty & Nostalgia 77 – You No Fit Touch Am in Dub
Wednesday, June 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Dele Sosimi Ft. Prince Fatty & Nostalgia 77 – You No Fit Touch Am in Dub

Image: 1604797 “A dub version could be a stone killer”, predicted David Hutchison in his 4 star Mojo review of ‘You No Fit Touch Am’. And here it is: Afrobeat icon Dele Sosimi’s recent album gloriously re-imagined in dub by two production masters, Prince Fatty and Nostalgia 77.

“It was such a rush to have Prince Fatty and Nostalgia 77 work their magic on Dele’s album. With Fatty bringing the spirit of 80s On-U Sound, Mikey Dread and Mad Professor, and Ben Nostalgia having mixed Dele’s original LP, this was always going to be something very special.” Dom Servini (Wah Wah 45s)

‘You No Fit Touch Am’, Dele Sosimi’s first full-length album in almost a decade, was released by Wah Wah 45s in May 2015. It represented where Dele is today – something of an untouchable force in the music scene that he has always been such a vital part of. The album provided a musical representation of Dele’s strong socio-political opinions, as well as delivering classic song-writing that could have come straight out of 1970s Lagos.

Born in Hackney, East London, but soon to return to his parents’ native Nigeria at the age of four, Dele Sosimi was schooled and raised in Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s shadow at the height of early 70s Afrobeat. Having been chosen by Fela to join his band at somewhat of a tender age, he was still a young man when sharing

Fela’s Glastonbury stage in 1984, and became both Musical Director for both Fela’s Egypt 80 and FemiKuti’s Positive Force. After Fela’s passing in 1997, Dele went on to concentrate on his own solo career and, with diligent patience, carved out his own Afrobeat crown. In London, where he now resides, his Afrobeat Vibration all-nighters are charged with his passion, labours and his unrelenting spirit.

The Joe Tatton Trio – Bang Bang Boogaloo / Sunday Shade
Wednesday, March 9th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Joe Tatton Trio – Bang Bang Boogaloo / Sunday Shade

Image: 1602832 Since 2007 Joe Tatton has been the Organist of The New Mastersounds and has played on 7 studio albums with the quartet as well as performing with the likes of Maceo Parker and George Porter jr & Zigaboo Modeliste from The Meters. As well as performing and recording with The New Mastersounds he has also recorded 2 albums with The Haggis Horns, 1 with his own band “Rodina” and has supplied organ on the number one single “Put you records on” by Corinne a Bailey Rae. The Joe Tatton Trio comprises of Joe himself on piano with Sam Hobbs on drums and Neil Innes on double bass. Additional performances on the tunes come from The Sorcerer’s Pete Williams and Submotion Orchestra’s Danny Templeman on Percussion on “Bang Bang Boogaloo” and Chris Dawkins providing guitar & The Yorkshire Film & Television Orchestra’s Steve Parry providing brass on “Sunday Shade”.

Inspired by the soul jazz piano of Ramsey Lewis & Eddie Cano, “Bang Bang Boogaloo” is a Latin Jazz soul jazz in the style of Young Holt’s “Whack Whack”. Featuring driving unison figures from bass and piano laid over Congas and Timbales , this is a classic soul-jazz boogaloo aimed squarley at the dancefloor. The B-side “Sunday Shade” is an altogether more laid-back affair, with the percussion of the A-side replaced by cool Grant Greenesque guitar and soft brass laid on a mid-tempo groove from bass and drums.

Support comes from Craig Charles who played it on his BBC6 Music show in January as part of his “ones to watch in 2016” segment and will be playing it again at the time of release. Further support also comes from Snarky Puppy’s Bill Laurence and Wah Wah 45s Dom Servini.

The Magnificent Tape Band (Ft. Rachel Modest) – Patterns in My Mind / Golden Shades
Thursday, March 3rd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Magnificent Tape Band (Ft. Rachel Modest) – Patterns in My Mind / Golden Shades

Image: 1602688 The Magnificent Tape Band are the alter egos of ATA Records founders Neil Innes & Pete Williams, who were the creative driving force behind last years debut album by The Sorcerers, for which they wrote and produced all the tracks as well as contributing bass and guitar performances. Sheffield born, Rachel Modest developed her unique vocal ability within the churches and gospel choirs of her local community. Now based in Leeds she has developed a powerful and soulful vocal style that takes inspiration from artists such as Madeleine Bell, Dee Dee Warwick, Dusty Springfield and on “Patterns In My Mind” delivers a performance that occasionally resembles the falsetto of The Delfonics William Hart.

Taking inspiration from the more abstract end of the soul spectrum that has been a richly tapped vein for hip-hop producers, The Magnificent tape band aim to create an evocative tapestry of sound that pulls together psychedelic soul with British library music to create a distinctly dramatic sounding record. Recorded on original ’60s equipment, using vintage instruments, “Patterns in my mind” immediately brings to mind the more experimental psychedelic soul records of the late 60s/early seventies by incorporating driving clavinet, loping drums and swirling organ alongside Rachel Modest’s ethereal vocals.

Support comes from Floating points, Wah Wah 45’s Dom Servini, Shawn Lee & Adrian Younge.

Airplay so far has come from Shawn Lee (Soho radio) and Dom Servini (Amazing radio) with radio play from BBC6 Music (Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show, Huey Morgan) forthcoming.

2 Golden Shades (feat. Rachel Modest) Available from 11.03.2016

Gideon Conn – Hip Hop Original
Friday, November 27th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Gideon Conn – Hip Hop Original

Image: 1601081 Wah Wah 45s are proud to present the third album, and first on the label, for vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, rapper, painter, carpenter, raconteur and one of the most talented and unique artists you’re likely to encounter – Gideon Conn. Hip Hop Original sums this man up in those three words, and it’s an album that tells tales of everyday life, love and relationships, politics, the law and even sport, all delivered in Gideon’s unique style. It also delivers some of Gideon’s most personal lyricism to date.

The album features some of the finest female vocalists working in the UK today – namely erstwhile Resonator, Bunty, Matthew Halsall collaborator and artist in her own right, Josephine Oniyama, a lady we first discovered via her work with The Boxettes, Yvette Riby-Williams, as well as regular collaborator, Hazel Tratt.

Hailing from Manchester, England, Gideon Conn is something of a one-off. His charming energy, quick wit and unique vocal often stun, and sometimes confuse, but in the end, audiences and listeners inevitably fall in love with this enigmatic, incomparable troubadour’s warmth and showmanship.

As much influenced by Joan as Policewoman and Simon & Garfunkle as by Aretha and Stevie or Mos Def and Talib Kweli, Gideon’s eclectic take on hip hop music is unparalleled with its soulful, humorous edge and intricate, inventive lyricism.

Having already garnered fans as diverse as Guy Garvey, Tom Robinson and Shaun Keaveney on BBC 6Music, Rob da Bank (Bestival) and John Kennedy (XFM) the next stage in Gideon’s story is already eagerly anticipated by radio, press, festival goers and the army of fans he’s garnered over the years.

The Gene Dudley Group (Ft.Anne Frankenstein & E) – Dynamite in the Still of the Night / Pearl Baby
Thursday, October 22nd, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Gene Dudley Group (Ft.Anne Frankenstein & E) – Dynamite in the Still of the Night / Pearl Baby

Image: 1600486 Wah Wah 45s are proud to present the brand new single from one-man horn driven funk music machine, The Gene Dudley Group. Following on from the recent club smasher – a cover of Todd Terje’s Inspector Norse – The Gene Dudley Group return with another dance floor destroyer! Original cut Dynamite in the Still of the Night features the powerhouse vocals of Anne Frankenstein (who also performed on big hitter No Trouble on the Mountain) just in time to cause explosions around your bonfire!

On the flip comes another funky cover version given the Gene Dudley treatment. In what is fast becoming something of a tradition, Mr Dudley has taken an early Wah Wah 45s release – in this case Benny Poole’s soul/jazz banger Pearl Baby, Pearl – and re-worked it for 2015. Fresh from his contributions to the Zambidoose album, and work with partner Myron for Stones Throw Records, Eric Boss AKA E (from Myron & E) adds some of his trademark vocals into the mix, making this package a double dance floor heavy hitter!

And don’t forget, The Gene Dudley Group’s sophomore LP, Zambidoose, is out now!
