The Pendletons – Gotta Get Out EP
Wednesday, October 19th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Pendletons – Gotta Get Out EP

Image: 1607033 The Pendletons is a long-standing boogie-funk and modern soul project of E da Boss and Trailer Limon. The group emerged with their very first release in 2010, a 7″ inch of “Coming Down/Waiting On You” with additional synth work by E.Live, on the Slept On record label, which set the tone for the group to emerge… it instantly became a cult classic receiving constant play at nights like Sweater Funk and Funkmosphere, and fetching for serious sums among collectors. In 2013, they followed up with another 7″ featuring K-Maxx, Jacqueline Mari and Songbird Remos and later a very limited flexi-disc release title “Winning Ova You”. Now in 2016, they return to the fold in full form with burgeoning live performances backed by a large group of vocal and instrumental guests, and their new release, the “Gotta Get Out” EP, on Voltaire Records.

The “Gotta Get Out” EP highlights the hardships of life and love in modern society, via the smooth and bass heavy grooves of the Pendletons production squad. The struggle is real out there, especially for artists trying to survive and follow their passions, and “Gotta Get Out” eschews those sentiments completely with a full cast of guest vocalists including Jimetta Rose and I-Ced. “Learning How To Love You” is an ode to the inter-dynamics of a relationship, and having to think through and adjust behavior to suit the needs of your partner. “Never Know” starts out the B-Side…a harrowing tale of how life choices, twists and pitfalls can radically change those around you, even the most gifted and guarded of people. The most beat-scene of the bunch, “Purple Moon” inter-splices COPS-esque dialogue with slamming 808 bass and cruising synth lines making for a certified hypnotic head-nodder.

Tracklist:
A1. Gotta Get Out feat. Jimetta Rose & I, CED
A2. Learning How To Love You
B1. Never Know
B2. Purple Moon

Various – Endeavors EP

Image: 1598486 1. Harvey Sutherland – That’s The Fact, Jack 2. K-Maxx – Wake Up 3. XL Middleton – One and Only 4. Social Lovers – Can’t Let It Go 5. Moon B – Back On 6. Timothy J. Fairplay – Rooftop Meeting / “Endeavors”, the 4th compilation from Voltaire Records, explores the vibes of boogie, disco, modern funk, and whatever the hell type of music is also on there that doesn’t fit into those aforementioned genres. It’s the music that a bunch of nasty psychotic animals would be jamming in a festering urban back alley, as shown on the compilation cover, illustrated by Oakland- based artist, Jessie California / Harvey Sutherland, hailing from Melbourne, kicks off the compilation with “That’s The Fact, Jack” a drifting G-Funky/Rhodes composition that glides smoothly along like a cutlass supreme in the slow lane. K-Maxx, of the Sweater Funk crew, next takes on production and MC duty on “Wake Up”, and churns out a heavy boogie-soul testament to the female persuasion. XL Middleton closes out the A side with “One and Only” an uptempo boogie-slapper accompanied by his signature shredding keyboard lead. On the B Side, Social Lovers start it off with the deep disco cut “Can’t Let It Go”, which dubs along as vocalist Megan D weavaes her sultry vocals between polyrhythmic percussion. Moon B next challenges the dancefloor to pinpoint his sound to a specific era, location, or vibe…and comes up with the atmospheric groove of “Back On”. Timothy Fairplay closes out the comp with the sinister rolling sci-fi cut “Rooftop Meeting”, an altruistic anthem of computer hardware mayhem, that defies time and space Available from 28.08.2015

Image: 1587202 Here comes the second EP from Loose Shus, direct from San Francisco, CA. Two years in the making, this self-titled EP combines modern funk, cosmic disco, and experimental synth boogie. The instruments used span three decades: from the 80s he used the Oberheim DX, Akai Ax60, Yamaha TX81z, to the 90s Roland JX-305, and onto present day software. The EP enlists the help of a few talented producers —XL Middleton’s ripping keyboard solos can be heard on “Saturation” —PLAzA lays in some chilled out textures on “Ladies”.

Loose Shus’ first EP was released in 2009 by Plant Music. He then went on to do many remixes for artists such as Mayer Hawthorne and Jupiter. He was featured on the Voltaire Records’ 12″ compilations Affairs Online and Private Function, as well as the Valerie Collective compilation.

The music videos below were all made by Loose Shus, he’s been skateboarding and animating strange animals since he was a young kid, why stop now.

Funkadelic, Soulclap & Brian Ellis Reflection – New Directions in Funk: Peep This / Slow Motion
Thursday, December 17th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Funkadelic, Soulclap & Brian Ellis Reflection – New Directions in Funk: Peep This / Slow Motion

Image: 1601343 You know Soul Clap likes it funky, so of course we’ve been digging all the new funk music coming out recently. This interest motivated us in compiling “Tempo Dreams Volume 3” for Bastard Jazz Records. In doing so we were able to gather so many amazing songs that they didn’t all fit on the compilation. Now using this inspiration as an invitation to start a new series on Soul Clap Records we’re excited to introduce NEW DIRECTIONS IN FUNK.

NEW DIRECTIONS IN FUNK is a colored 7″ vinyl only series that features future funk from Soul Clap and our freaky friends from around the world. Inspired by labels we love like Cherries, Voltaire, PPU, Hot Shot & Omega Supreme, NEW DIRECTIONS IN FUNK pushes the boundaries of what funk music can be, while always paying homage to the roots.

First in the series is a double A sider (aka music so hot we can’t choose!). On the A side is “Peep This”, a track we did with George Clinton/Funkadelic which features Crew Love members Nick Monaco and Greg Paulus along with G Koop! And do you remember “So Fine”, the Paradise Garage classic by Howard Johnson? Well he’s featured on the B side’s “Slow Motion”, a collaboration with Bay Area innovator Brian Ellis’ Reflection project!

Tracklisting
1. Funkadelic & Soulclap – Peep This
2. Brian Ellis Reflection – Slow Motion (feat. Howard Johnson) Available from 15.01.2016

UR, Kenny Larkin, Jeff Mills, Pierre Schaeffer , Pierre Henry, Bernard Permangiani…

No schools, no boundaries

These two styles of music – techno on one side and electroacoustic music on the other – are traditionally pitched against each other. However the two schools have a number of things in common, particularly the way they approach tone and the treatment of sound via electronics. Rebotini, who actually composed for the GRM, has often reaffirmed his admiration for composers like Bernard Parmegiani and Luc Ferrari. As for Zanési, after originally being in awe of Bartok and Stravinsky, he studied under Pierre Schaeffer in the1970s before discovering (rather late) the music of Kraftwerk and Cabaret Voltaire.

Sharing the same curiosity for classical, contemporary and electronic music (even noise), the two composers decided to bring together and confront their two styles of music in a shared project called Frontières, first on stage and then in the studio.

Over the course of their first live shows, the two musicians began to improvise, varying the intensity and length of the songs, whether playing in a club at 2am or in more traditional surroundings. Since the beginning they had been accompanied by video artist Zita Cochet who composes images to illustrate their tracks and serve as a backdrop to their concerts.
