Peaking Lights – Little Flower (feat. Chloe Sevigny)

Image: 1607950 Recent Harvey Favorite Alert!* Peaking Lights are back at it. While the clouds of pessimism hover, rays of sunshine cut and break thru with two new tracks for healing and conquering the shadows that loom. Little Flower featuring Chloë Sevigny for Regime Des Fleurs and curated by fashion sound guru Michel Gaubert. Over the summer of 2016, Peaking Lights was approached by DJ Harvey’s camp for the instrumental version for sweaty times so for some of you this tune may ring familiar, however, this is the first time it’s been available…. TIP! *Limited initial copies*
.
The vocal version features Chloë Sevigny with a beautiful melancholic yet powerful chant to Saint Therese an alchemical figure who’s words “What matters in life is not great deeds but great love” ring true thru time. Peaking Lights production is a playfully psychedelic mid tempo love jam with a lot of groove.

On the flip is Conga Blue with the instrumental to follow. An upbeat weirdo disco cut laying it down at 120bpm with some dreamy vocals with a catchy line “through dark and doom can flowers bloom?” as the solid rhythm section holds it together while melodies float by and the clav and synths ride the groove. Originally this cut was released digitally in March 2016 one year later it’s on wax.

Peaking Lights are also preparing to release their much-anticipated fifth record – a double album (title TBA) in April 2017 on their label Two Flowers Records.

Conceived in 2013 to re-release their album, 936, Two Flowers Records is now completely independent, run by Indra Dunis of Peaking Lights. The label follows an art as life ethic where the artist takes control of their work thru DIY mechanisms. Based in Los Angeles, CA.

Image: 1591621 Album Info:

Reaches For The Sky”) einer 60er Jahre Vorstand.

Band Info:
Bereits 2009 veröffentlichten The Vals ihr
erstes Album „Sticks and Stones“ bei Electrique Mud / Unique Records.
Available from 05.12.2014

Image: 1608800 The arrival of Marvin Parks on today’s musical scene is a perfect addition to the renaissance of the Afro-American Jazz Crooner panorama, deeply rooted in the Black Music tradition. Having his roots in Gospel and in the ’50s and ’60s jazz singers by the likes of Nat King Cole, Johnny Hartman and Joe Williams, Marvin Parks yet remains by all means an artist of today. In his debut Marvin shapes his light baritone colors within the sound of a well-established group of musicians under the direction and production of Nicola Conte, giving a different light to well-known standards and some originals.

The arrival of Marvin Parks on today’s musical scene can be considered a very fitting addition to the renaissance of the Afro-American Jazz Crooner panorama, deeply rooted in the Black Music tradition. Having his roots in Gospel and in the ’50s and ’60s jazz singers by the likes of Nat King Cole, Johnny Hartman and Joe Williams, Marvin Parks yet remains by all means an artist of today.

In his debut Marvin shapes his light baritone colors within the sound of a well-established group of musicians under the direction and production of Nicola Conte. The main idea was to create a soundscape to give a different light to well-known standards and some originals.

The album has been recorded in two main sessions. The first one took place at the Sorriso Studio in Bari, Italy, the same place where Nicola Conte recorded all his albums, with a fantastic line-up including Daniele Tittarelli (alto saxophone), Francesco Lento (trumpet), Pietro Lussu (piano), Luca Alemanno (double bass), Nicola Angelucci (drums), Pierpaolo Bisogno (percussion) and, of course, Nicola Conte himself (guitar). The second recording session took place in Milan, Italy, at the Schema/Ishtar Records Blue Spirit studio, with the same rhythm section and a stellar guest in the person of Logan Richardson (alto saxophone).

The first session brings a strong ’60s Blue Note sound sensation, while the second, surrounded by a sort of African feeling, emanates hints of the historical Coltrane / Davis quintet, reminding the colours of Paris in the sixties… Paris, just by accident, is Marvin Parks’ hometown in these days.

The album is released in two versions: a 3-panel digipack 13-track CD and an indivisible set of two separate LP’s, simply named Volume 1 and 2, for a total of 16 tracks. In the vinyl version the tracklist has been divided, based on the songs mood, on the four sides named as follows: ‘A – The Soul Side’, ‘B – The Afro-Blues Side’, ‘C – The Standards Side’ and ‘D – The Ballads Side’.

Blu x Union Analogtronics – Cheetah In The City

Image: 1606568 Hot off collaborations with Nottz (Titans in the Flesh EP) and
Madlib (Bad Neighbor LP), SoCal ambassador Blu has teamed
up with the Paris-based production team Union Analogtronics (OJ
& Gold) to unleash a new full length album: Cheetah in the City.
Featuring Dam-Funk, Phat Kat, Frank N Dank, and more, the album
signifies a stylistic sea change for Blu, best known for his dusty,
soul sampling collaborations with Exile (Below the Heavens) and his
own introspective opuses (Her Favorite Colour, Good to be Home,
York!). Rippling with 808s and cinematic strings, Cheetah in the
City is an organic evolution from the synth-soaked, futuristic sound
of Analogtronics, UNION’s 2012 Fat Beats Records debut album
featuring Talib Kweli, MF DOOM, Elzhi, Guilty Simpson, and more.
After mutual friends put them in touch at a Parisian post-show
after-party, Blu and Union began a musical exchange that spanned
continents. Blu returned to LA with UNION’s best beats, and after
months of exchanging lyrical ideas, the trio regrouped for marathon
recording sessions in UNION’s Paris-based studio. Cloistered for
weeks with nothing but drum machines, instruments, keyboards,
records, and France’s best bud, Blu became obsessed with infusing
his kicked back Southern California sensibilities into UNION’s
penchant for pushing the possibilities of technicality into multilayered, densely packed productions. A cohesive story emerged in
the songwriting: a young man, raised amongst deadbeats, killers,
and hard drugs, metamorphoses into the Cheetah, a money-making
predator whose quick talk and cold hustle make him the king of a city
that will eventually consume him, heart and soul.
We’ve never heard Blu like this.

Jah9 – 9
Friday, September 30th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Jah9 – 9

The new album entitled “9” is released on the 09.09.!

For those who’ve been waiting for Rasta consciousness to mount a resurgence in contemporary reggae, Jah9’s first album for VP is a figure of revelation and deliverance. Including artists Earl “Chinna” Smith, Dean Fraser and Unga Thompson, Jah9 has delivered in “9” an album that fulfills the promise of her earlier releases with expansive maturity, prophetic purpose and even deeper displays of warrior-goddess prowess on the mic. As combination guest the longplayer features Vaughn “Akae Beka” Benjamin (from Midnite). The CD will come with an eco-friendly, recyclable soft pack with 12-page booklet and the LP in an eco-friendly, recyclable standard jacket.

PRESS RELEASE

VP Records is pleased to announce the welcoming of Jamaican singer-songwriter and producer Jah9 to the family.

9 | 9 | 2 + 0 + 1 + 6 = 9

For those who’ve been waiting for Rasta consciousness to mount a resurgence in contemporary reggae, Jah9 is a figure of revelation and deliverance. She first caught the attention of many with the release of her lilting video for “Avocado.” When heard in the full flower of older songs such as “Steamers A Bubble,” “Jungle” and “Gratitude” Jah9 was revealed to be a singer and poet of considerable range, soul and jazz inflected melodicism. Her fiery and righteous live shows can testify she is hardly a made in the studio chanteuse incapable of translating to the stage with abundant dynamism. The product of a strong upbringing, by two hard working culturally and politically engaged parents, Jah9 is also a university graduate, a multidisciplinary yoga instructor, a youth at risk counselor and a celebrated dub poet. The combination of intellectual rigor, real world activism and lyrical musicality is well on display in her entirely self-produced sophomore album ‘9’. Thematically there is no slacking in spiritual advocacy, oppositional militancy or honed and focused tunefulness.

Through the new addition of Jah9, VP Records, the premiere reggae label and distributor, will break new ground with her depth of talent. She joins the label’s longstanding reputation for producing hitmakers: Sean Paul, Gyptian, Beenie Man, Beres Hammond, Morgan Heritage, Tarrus Riley, Busy Signal, Alborosie, I Wayne, Romain Virgo, Christopher Martin, Raging Fyah, Lady Saw, Spice, Etana, Queen Ifrica, Bunji Garlin and many more.

VP Records CEO Chris Chin expresses his enthusiasm about the signing. “We are excited to share Jah9’s fusion of reggae, jazz and spoken word to the world. She exemplifies the meaning of multi-talented – boasting sharp songwriting and production skills matched with her soulful voice – and exudes a presence and spirit that resonates with the listener. She has something unique and special that will carry on for generations to come.”

This week, she unveils “Humble Mi” to the world (out Fri. Jun 24), the first single from her highly-anticipated label debut ‘9’, slated for release on September 9, 2016.

“This song was inspired by my whole journey and life unfolding, teaching me that knowing is not the journey because you will always have to know more. The journey is peace, love and balancing the energies within,” explains Jah9.

Jah9’s relationship with VP Records has blossomed in recent years. Her track “Feeling Irie” was a highlight of 2015’s The Biggest Reggae One Drop Anthems, and this year Jah9 contributed “Bloody City” to We Remember Dennis Brown, a tribute album to the Crown Prince of Reggae.

TJ – Time Is Wasting
Friday, July 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on TJ – Time Is Wasting

Image: 1604657 BBE presents its first release digging deep in the Strata archive with Time Is Wasting from TJ.

Tracklist:
A1 Love Flower
A2 You’re the One
B1 Reach for the Sky
B2 Time is Wasting

It’s the crate digger’s dream or nightmare. The modern day musical archaeologist is always in search of that elusive piece of a musical puzzle. Dusting off a slice of unknown vinyl or a mystery tape in a battered box might just open up another chapter of discovery that illuminates the art of the people. Enter 180 Proof’s Amir Abdullah who, since 2010, has been getting dusty digits sifting through the master tapes in the Strata studio in Detroit. It’s there that he discovered and was blown away the voice and vibe of TJ.
“I came across the TJ demo tapes back in 2012 when I secured the exclusive license to the whole Strata Records catalog,” explains Amir who plans an imminent release of the four tracks on 10” vinyl in conjunction with BBE
Records. “My first response to hearing the demo was WOW! Frankly, the sound quality was not good but the soul and passion of the music was unbelievable. I immediately thought about a young Shuggie Otis when
hearing the songs.” As with the rediscovery of Shuggie Otis’ ‘Inspiration Information’, by the likes of Gilles Peterson back in the 90’s, there are always questions to be asked. With Shuggie Otis there was lineage plus the image of a hip young guy with a big ‘Fro and acoustic guitar. Two decades on he’d simply dropped off the radar. What happened? With TJ there’s only the tape and says Amir, “There was no info on the master just the name TJ. I don’t know when the TJ was recorded at all. The strata catalog is from 73-75 and it’s one of many recordings that were recorded but never released. I sat on the music for three years because I couldn’t afford to clean it up and remaster it properly until now.“ “As the Strata curator, I felt that this recording def fits in with what the Strata catalog is about. The soul and passion of the lyrics are heartfelt. As you can hear, most of the songs are about love. The raw form of just him, a guitar with vocal layers is so rough but it def represents the grittiness of the sound of Strata. I think the TJ represents what the Strata mottos were about: ‘The Sound of Detroit’ and ‘All Musics For All Peoples’. What makes me want to release this in its raw and rough form is that the genius of this recording cannot be denied. I hope that TJ somehow hears that the recording is out. I would love to give fullcredit to him and the musicians.” In 2016 Amir Abdullah and 180 Proof Records continue to dig deeper. Tune in and join in on the search for TJ.

For Fans of:
Shuggie Otis, Bill Withers, Sugarman, Devendra Barnhart

Key Selling Points:
– A mystery tape in the Strata Records archive never previously released
– When Amir who curates the Strata re-issues played TJ to Gilles Peterson , his response was simply ‘thats too good not to release’
– Limited vinyl pressing

Various – Rock It, Don’t Stop It (comp.by Sean P)
Thursday, April 10th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Rock It, Don’t Stop It (comp.by Sean P)

Image: 1587136 BBE present their first step into a new wave of disco rap albums planned for 2014 with their essential new collection Rock It, Don’t Stop It compiled by Sean P.

Without doubt, funk is the father of hip-hop – and although disco is sometimes viewed as somewhat anathematic to that movement, it’s worth remembering that for a while at least, it provided the vehicle that brought rap out of New York and presented it to the world – and the
results of these divergent musical styles crossing paths still resonate around the globe.
It’s easy to forget or play down the importance of the Sugarhill Gang’s ‘Rapper’s Delight’ – an unusual, clever novelty record that was cocksure and playful, which burned up the commercial airwaves in 1979. It was followed swiftly by Kurtis Blow’s ‘Christmas Rapping’, which also charted and gave Top Of The Pops its first on-stage rapper in early 1980. Although it wasn’t yet referred to as hip-hop in the UK, rap had already made itself known to the record-buying public at large – and as the rap 12-inch single was barely a year old, this was an incredible feat for such a nascent scene.
The largely independent rap releases which had been slowly but steadily trickling out of the US would occasionally, like Sugarhill’s appropriation of Chic’s ‘Good Times’, take their musical cues from popular club tracks of the day – and disco-derived rap records were plenty. ‘Rock It… Don’t Stop It!’ features a selection of forgotten or relatively obscure rap singles from the ’79-‘83 period, universally known as ‘old school’, which fall into this category. Inspiration for these vignettes from hip-hop’s evolution range from classic party rockers by Cheryl Lynn, through to Yazoo (and, no doubt, ‘Rapper’s Delight’) and the featured MCs give it their best shot with humour, earnestness and everything in-between. Although most of these hail from New York state, the under-represented Massachusetts shines alongside a prominent player which at the time had yet to find its own distinctive voice – Los Angeles.
Hip hop and rap are now a dominant force in contemporary music and have constantly adapted to stay relevant, drawing on and absorbing all around them. ‘Rock It… Don’t Stop It!’ goes back over 30 years to their collective big bang moment.

KEY SELLING POINTS:
• ‘Disco Rap’ a genre seldom been compiled, this album includes some of the most influential tracks from the period, none of which have appeared on a compilation before.

Image: 1586829 Deluxe 2LP edition sold out! Definitive reissue of the legendary late ’60s Los Angeles psychedelic masterpiece: restored/remastered transfer, pitch/speed corrected for the first time ever. Extensive booklet contains dozens of unpublished photos and images, a thorough investigation into this landmark album, and an extensive interview with Damon.
Damon’s Song Of A Gypsy is generally regarded as one of the finest privately-pressed psychedelic rock records and has, for over twenty years, been one of the most sought after late 60s American rock artifacts in the world, with the scant original copies that exist exchanging hands for thousands of dollars.
Song of a Gypsy has remained high on its own plateau: out of reach and indescribable. It seemed that this homespun, funky psychedelic monument borrowed from nothing and sprung from nowhere. Damon’s unique, introspective songwriting and nuanced voice, the interplay between he and lead guitarist Charlie Carey and an atmosphere that so perfectly captured the last bloom of the flower power era as it decayed into the dark haze of the ’70s underground could only have arisen from a spark of auspicious genius. But did it?
Over the past seven years, we at Now-Again have been obsessed with Song of a Gypsy and have researched the album, and Damon’s life-arch. This anthology is our attempt to put forth a convincing argument for the overwhelming importance of this album, a unique high point from within but also outside of America’s psychedelic movement.
We follow Damon on his “predestined life as a gypsy” from his birth into a tight knit Italian American family in Rochester, New York, through the various Los Angeles communities that he would call home. We analyze the entirety of his oeuvre, from his first surf-rock single in 1960, through schmaltzy pop, convincing doo-wop, blued eyed soul and garage rock in the mid 60s. And we focus on the year 1967, the founding of his label Ankh, and his transformation from a pop hopeful to the tortured soul who would create Song of a Gypsy. We attempt to make sense of the seminal moments that made this transformation possible in a crucial moment in America’s psychedelic high water mark in this, the definitive reissue of this album.

John Beltran – Amazing Things
Thursday, May 9th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on John Beltran – Amazing Things

Image: 1579547 After the well-received and career-spanning compilation that was 2011’s Ambient Selections, John Beltran returns with a brand new album entitled Amazing Things, due for released on Delsin records in March 2013.
As a life long pioneer of ambient soundscapes, blissful downbeat and stirring techno, Michigan born John Beltran already has his place in history assured with a bulging back catalogue that takes in influential releases on vital labels like Peacefrog and R&S. This new 17-track album sees the man draw on his lifetime in music to craft an immediately timeless body of work that’s stuffed with genuine musicality, pregnant with emotion and laden with organic blissfulness.

Since Beltran’s last original full length, he admits a lot has changed. “I’m using all new gear and virtual synths that I didn’t have when writing Human Engine so it sounds different for sure. And let’s just say that this album still wouldn’t be finished had a friend not turned me on to the software Omnisphere.”

Despite new tools and techniques, Beltran’s touch still shines through in his floating arrangements, opposing textures and organic resonance, as do the continued influences of favourite artists including Four Tet, Thom Yorke and Johnny Greenwood.

“There was no real plan [for the album]. Some of these songs (“Clouds Pull”) are over two years old. This album is truly an accumulation of music inspired by my life as a new father but I didn’t write these songs for an album per say. I guess it was just written with a lot of love.”

Love – and feelings thereof – permeate the album from start to finish. Tracks like opener “Retrouvailles” immediately submerge you into a utopian world with the distant sound of a playground coming over like the backdrop to a daydream, whilst more kinetic, splintered efforts like “Het Leven is Mooi” recall the aforementioned patchwork beauty of Four Tet, and “Flower Power Submarine” carries you along on a warm summer breeze.

Importantly, dark is contrast with light throughout, so more sombre, melancholic drifts like “For Vangelis” sit next to the more uplifting violins and raindrop melodies of “Broken Machines”. Overall a mature and hugely resonant album for grown-ups, Amazing Things is full of just that.

2. Clouds Pull
3. Het Leven Is Mooi
4. Our Second Summer
5. Of All The Things In This World

7. Medellin
8. Flower Power Nuclear Submarine
9. Amazing Things To Come

13. For Vangelis

Simon Green was born and grew up in rural Hampshire, escaping to Brighton aged eighteen. There he fell into the jazz/hip hop/funk/soul scene centred around Rob Luis and nights like phonic:hoop. An accomplished musician as a teenager, he began producing his own tracks, pushing at the template established in the sweaty little venues studding the […]

And what had started back then as wild style experiments quickly grew into a recognized party […]

On his new album prolific producer Ben Lamdin aka Nostalgia 77 explores new territory. Unlike Ben’s previous instrumental works, “Everything Under The Sun” is a song-based collection.

Lamdin explains: “I wanted to continue developing the ideas I’ve explored in the other records, to take the emotional moods that are there and to vocalise them. I wanted to write lyrics that reflected them.”

His new album “Everything Under The Sun” is a new example of lush, atmospheric, funky jazz. The album features vocalist Lizzy Parks on the opening track “Widflower” which was picked out by Gilles Peterson as a favorite cut stating that Nostalgia 77 and Lizzy Parks were “two of my favorite acts of 2006 teaming up”. The LP also features vocalist Beth Rowley who hails from Bristol. Lamdin says he knew she was right for the project just one verse in at an impromptu audition. The use of vocalists helps create a beautiful cosmic-tinged jazz album that sounds as much classic, spiritual, and Impulse-influenced, as it does Cinematic Orchestra and Koop …
