Posted in For Facebook, News | Comments Off on Traffic Entertainment presents a re-release of Mad Skillz’ debut album “From Where???” …

Pound-for-pound, Mad Skillz may be one of the most underrated emcees of the 1990s. The Virginianative earned a reputation for dropping incredible freestyles littered with punchlines and witty references, which eventually led to a recording contract with Atlantic Records in 1995. His debut album “From Where???” was released the following year, and despite being overlooked […]

Dinosaur L – 24/24 Music

Image: 488745 Repress! Dinosaur L is an alias donned by Arthur Russell, a man whose contribution to dance music from the
late seventies and through the eighties was formidable but only quietly acknowledged. His innovative
and left field dance records were way ahead of what people were used to hearing at the time.
He was a cellist who studied classical and Indian music. As well as his great strides in dance music he
was also involved in the New York downtown avant-garde music scene and produced some albums in
a more avant-garde/experimental vein as well as trying his own unique approach to pop. He scored
several hits on the underground New York dance scene at clubs like The Paradise Garage (Larry Levan
was a huge supporter). His biggest tunes, “Go Bang!” and “Is It All Over My Face?” were worldwide
club hits and are still played today as classics. His records have influenced the scene from his first
dance record in 1979 to the present day and his work has been much sampled.
Sadly Arthur died in 1992, but his music lives on and his influence is still felt on the dance music scene,
his tunes still sound great and are still moving many dancers around the world, so his spirit lives on.
Sleeping Bag Records and Traffic Entertainment Group is proud to present Dinosaur L’s “24->24

U-Roy – Natty Rebel
Tuesday, June 13th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on U-Roy – Natty Rebel

Image: 1610502 U-Roy was a true reggae pioneer, dubbed The Originator for
good reason. Bursting onto the Jamaican scene in the early
1970s, he pioneered the vocal approach called “toasting,”
which in addition to bringing Jamaican music into a new era,
was also heavily influential on an American vocal style also in
its infancy: rapping.
Following up the Record Store Day 2017 release of U-Roy’s
classic Dread In A Babylon, Traffic Entertainment Group now
brings us a very welcome reissue of the vocalist’s 1976
full-length (and fourth) album, Natty Rebel, which has been
out of print for more than 30 years.
Produced by Tony Robinson (known for his work with Big
Youth, Lloyd Parks, the Gladiators and many more), the
album’s 11 cuts range from bouncier and sometimes even
disco-tinged grooves – “Have Mercy,” “Go There Natty” and
the album lead-off, “Babylon Burning” – to the classic roots
stepping that drew fans to the legendary Jamaican vocalist
over his long career – including “So Jay Jah Say” and “Natty
Kung Fu.”
At its core, this is a deep journey into the heart of rasta living,
spoken by one of Jamaica’s most underrated dub and roots
legends, and it’s one of the strongest full-lengths in his
expansive catalog.
Whether you are experiencing U-Roy for the first time, or
replacing your decades-old original LP, diving into this
reissue of Natty Rebel is one hell of a way to spend an
afternoon. Or, if you’re not careful, a week or two.

A1. Babylon Burning
A2. Natty Rebel
A3. So Jah Jah Say
A4. Natty Kung Fu
A5. If You Should Leave Me

B2. Travelling Man

is it none of the above?). It is true that Mantronix will be remembered for their multi-faceted sound as well as their ability to

Rudy Ray Moore – Dolemite For President
Tuesday, August 23rd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Rudy Ray Moore – Dolemite For President

Image: 1605675 You might think that a certain bad-hair-having, shit-talking presidential candidate is obnoxious, but there’s one man who would definitely
be more dangerous in the White House: Dolemite.
Traffic Entertainment Group is proud to reissue this hilarious and downright filthy album to celebrate the mud-slinging we’ll all be
experiencing this fall. And, of course, to remind the world of Rudy Ray Moore’s unique comedic genius.
Originally released in 1972 in the middle of the disaster now known as the Nixon Years, the album is filled to the brim with Moore’s bawdy
but debatably insightful takes on politics, sex and American society, funneled through the lens of his most famous persona, Dolemite. As
it warns on the cover: “Rated XXX: For Adults Only.” And they aren’t kidding.
The album’s lengthy first cut, “Campaign Speech,” is worth the price of admission alone. Ranting for ten minutes straight, Moore lets it all
hang out, with every bit of profanity he can muster. It’s certainly interesting to hear some of his words more than four decades later. “I’m
not promising you a chicken in every pot,” he bellows, in his trademark raspy scowl. “I’m not promising you a God-damn thing. If I am
elected, I promise to legalize prostitution, marijuana, stealing, and every other motherfuckin’ thing you want to do.” Making fun of Nixon,
George McGovern and Spiro Agnew, he continues, “We’re still waiting for that 40 acres and that motherfucking mule.”
Towards the end, he brings forth a metaphor that, interestingly, would come true in the year of Moore’s passing, 2008: “The next thing I’ma
do, I’m gonna move on my first act. I’m gonna get me 2,000 raggedy-ass painters, and paint the motherfucking White House black!”
The rest of the album’s 13 songs are equally loud, offensive, funny and even – when the audience isn’t expecting it – serious. With a live
soul group grooving behind him and a live audience yelling support along the way, he gives his fans what they want on cuts like “Dance Of
The Freaks,” “Long Island Duck,” “Farting Contest” and “Chester & Mr. Dillon.”
Released on black vinyl with its eye-catching original front and back artwork, it’s a great way to relive the comedic bravery and brashness
of a truly unique man, Rudy Ray Moore.

Image: 1602211 “Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde.” Not that they didn’t keep busy in that period
with supporting slots for De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest as well as a
successful spot on Lollapalooza’s 1994 tour. Of course J-Swift had parted
ways with the group just before the conclusion of the Bizarre Ride sessions.
Rather than try to out an out replace Swift, production on Labcabincalifornia
was handled by the Pharcyde’s own Bootie Brown, Fatlip and Slimkid3 along
with contributions from Diamond D, M-Walk and very notably the work of a
recent arrival in LA, Jay Dee aka J Dilla.
The resulting project, “Labcabincalifornia”, maybe calmer than the group’s
debut but it’s no less warped with stand out cuts like the She Said, Drop, and
Runnin’. Traffic Entertainment and The Bicycle Music Company are now
proud to bring you the instrumentals of the entire project on this special
double vinyl edition.

Del The Funky Homosapien – I Wish My Brother George Was Here
Thursday, November 28th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Del The Funky Homosapien – I Wish My Brother George Was Here

Image: 87900 prod.by Del, Ice Cube & DJ PIn the early 90s hip hop took a turn and gangsta-style rap dominated, making waves off
the West Coast that rattled throughout the world. The East Coast’s dominance was
descending despite the success and positivity of Native Tongues acts like De La Soul
and A Tribe Called Quest, who favored thought-provoking humor and cleverness over
gangsta rap’s grittiness and grim outlook. It was in this landscape that Oakland, CA’s
Del The Funky Homosapien emerged in 1991, with his debut release
I Wish My Brother George Was Here.
Cribbing equally from the East Coast’s irreverence and wit, and the West Coast’s
P-Funk inspired production, (the album was produced by Del’s cousin Ice Cube) Del’s
debut has rightly been heralded as a benchmark album for underground hip hop.
I Wish My Brother George Was Here not only produced the underground classics “Dr. Bombay” and “Mistadobalina”
(#9 on the 1992 Hot Rap Tracks Charts), but also set the scene for the success of the other less gangsta West Coast
artists like The Pharcyde, Digable Planets, and of course Del’s compatriots in Souls of Mischief. Above all else, Del is
credited with injecting some much needed light-heartedness at a moment when it was truly needed.
Since his debut Del has gone on to work alongside Gorillaz, Wu-Tang Clan, El-P, Handsome Boy Modeling School, and
as a member of the acclaimed hip-hop supergroup Deltron 3030, and even with Dinosaur Jr.
Traffic Entertainment now presents I Wish My Brother George Was Here as a special double LP reissue, featuring the
original artwork, and all of The Funky Homosapien’s witty and innovative rhymes intact.

Tony Aiken & Future 2000 – Unity Sing It Shout It
Thursday, October 3rd, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Tony Aiken & Future 2000 – Unity Sing It Shout It

Image: 88072 Hailing from New York during the mid 1970s, Tony Aiken and Future 2000 was a musical group whose funky brand of R&B-meets-dance featured a distinct sound reminiscent of a combination of Carribbean music and Afrobeat. Their strong arrangements, pulsating beats, and unique orchestrations made them underground darlings for much of the mid-70s. Their Kimsha Records release
Unity: Sing It, Shout It was a joyous, booty-shaking pile of East Coast disco at its most raw.
Aiken has since gone on to work with artists such as Dennis Brown, Frankie Paul, Chosen Few, and many more, but the original Unity album has largely been forgotten to the sands of history…until now! In association with Traffic Entertainment, Kimsha Records is proud to present this sterling reissue of the original Unity LP, right on down to the recreation of its original jacket. Features
hard-hitting funk tracks like “Better Days”, and soulful cuts like “Time Tunnel”, with bouncing bass-lines and sinuous keyboards. Unity’s crown jewel however is its’ title track, a 9+ minute long stomper with hints of reggae and tastes of early-disco vibes. An obscure gem, and a classic for any fan of fine afro-centric music.

SIDE A:
1. Unity, Sing It, Shout It
SIDE B:
1. Good Things.
2. Better Days
3. She Loves Me
4. Time Tunnel Available from 13.09.2013

Joe Mansfield’s 200-page Beat Box: A Drum Machine Obsession coffee-table book
features 75 drum machines from the author’s personal collection, with more
than 200 photos by Award Winning photographer Gary Land and Foreword by Dave
Tompkins.
Early book teaser Beat Box Vol.1: Roland TR-909 Rhythm Composer was released
for Record Store Day on April 20th, 2013. It all started with one machine.
The location was Boston, Mass. The year was 1986. The “beat box” in question
was the TR-808. Almost three decades later, Mansfield’s obsession with drum
machines has finally spilled out of his home and climate-controlled storage
space into the world at large. With
Beat Box: A Drum Machine Obsession (Get
On Down Publishing), the Boston-based hip-hop producer and music industry
veteran – who helped bring the world Edo G’s “I Got To Have It” and “Be A
Father To Your Child” in the early ’90s, and went on to found Traffic
Entertainment Group and co-found Get On Down – shares his deep love and
respect for “Beat Boxes” on every page.

The book itself features gorgeous photos of 75 drum machines by Gary Land
(www.garylandphotography.com), background and facts about each machine
gathered by Mansfield, archival advertisements, and interviews with master
drum machine programmers and innovators including Davy DMX, Schoolly-D,
Marshall Jefferson and Roger Linn. The range of drum machines covered spans
several decades, from the 1950s to the late 1980s.

Mansfield’s collecting has never been about machines-as-trophies, hoarding
or fetishism: he can play and/or program each machine he details in the book.
His electronic children aren’t kept in plastic, never to be touched or used.
That’s what gives the book its heart – Mansfield’s emotional attachment to
these objects that many people still see as robotic replacements for human
percussion. But, as any good drum machine manipulator knows, even machines
can have soul. And lest readers forget, Mansfield reminds us that drum
machines have been used in the rock and pop world since the 1970s: Sly & The
Family Stone, Kraftwerk, the Yellow Magic Orchestra and Blondie all
benefitted from beat boxes on their hits, as did artists ranging from New
Order and Madonna to Prince and Bruce Hornsby in the ’80s.
All of these aspects encompassing the wide-ranging and complex history of
drum machines are documented and discussed in words and images in Beat Box,
helmed and overseen by Joe Mansfield’s expertise. It is part encyclopedia,
part coffee-table photo book, and will enthrall music, technology and
photography fans around the world. Available from 29.11.2013

It’s no big secret that 2007 was another shocker for our beloved industry. You probably heard about it in the news. Artists were so broke they had to start to work at McDonalds. Record labels went out of business. Distribution companies had to close their doors.
