“It all started when Apollo Noir, Tigersushi’s latest signing
came to me with a split 12” he wanted to release, including
his own track “Inspiring Images & Visual Power. Chosen
With Love & Dedication” and Glass’ “Heart”. I loved the tunes
but wasn’t convinced that releasing a 12inch for those 2
songs only was relevant, so I proposed we extend this split
EP to a full French Ambient compilation and we all got
excited by the idea. There’s never been one although there’s
an undeniable interest in that genre from a broad spectrum
of French musicians. A few days later, me, Apollo Noir and
Charlotte (Tigersushi’s lieutenant in chief) compiled a short
list of names we were interested in and within just a few
weeks we put together this compilation. Amazingly, 95% of
the artists we contacted agreed to participate.
Another surprise is how those 18 tunes come together in
such a homogenous way, this stroke me the first time I
listened to the whole record. Maybe it’s a result of the
fascination for old and new analog machines shared by most
of the musicians featured here. Maybe it has to do with a
long French lineage of experimental electronic music (Pierre
Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, Jean Michel Jarre, and all the lesser
known synth library music and score composers…).
Anyway we couldn’t be happier with the result and we’re
already excited to work on the second chapter.” Joakim

Various – Ten Years Of Phonica – Sampler One
Wednesday, March 26th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Ten Years Of Phonica – Sampler One

Image: 1587854 Phonica unveil the first in a series of three 12″ samplers featuring a selection of tracks from their new compilation ‘Ten Years Of Phonica’.

Tigersushi and Crowdspacer boss Joakim kicks off the first 12″ with melancholic masterpiece ‘EAHR’. A prolific and sonically diverse producer, his balearic-flavoured remixes over the years for the likes of Antena and Max Berlin shines through on this one. Up next is the enigmatic Panoram, a shop favourite since his brilliant ‘Accents’ 12″ arrived back in 2012. The lysergic ‘Alpha Marmara’ hits all the right spots once again.

On the b-side edit-masters and rare record connaisseurs Psychemagik contribute the string-laden ‘Triumph Of The Gods’, an ambitious Axelrod-esque modern funk gem. Finally, Alex Egan resurrects his work as The Draughtsman one last time with the previously unreleased track ‘Fade To Green’ – a deep, atmospheric house/techno cut recorded during the same 2010/11 sessions as his ‘1694 EP’.

Phonica Records was established in September 2003 and set up shop in Soho, London, adding to the high concentration of independent records stores that inhabited the area. Founders, Simon Rigg, Heidi Vanden Amstel and Tom Relleen joined The Vinyl Factory with the aim of creating an exciting outlet for innovative dance music, traversing all sub-genres and cultures. Over the past decade the emporium has developed into a well-respected destination for DJs and enthusiasts, and has subsequently become a bustling hive of conversation and inspiration as part of a wider community of music lovers.

While trends and movements in music have grown and faded over these years, Phonica has always remained in a state of evolution. It is this openness to change alongside a commitment to it’s original ethos and an enduring ardour for quality, cutting-edge sounds that has fuelled the shop’s staying power.

To celebrate reaching this milestone, Phonica Records have invited some of their favourite artists to produce a track for an eclectic yet cohesive compilation, which will hopefully go some way towards sonically unfolding the ‘Ten Years of Phonica.’

TRACK LISTING:

A1. Joakim – EAHR
A2. Panoram – Alpha Marmara
B1. Psychemagik – Triumph Of The Gods
B2. The Draughtsman – Fade To Green

Various – Late Night Tales – After Dark Sampler

Image: 1580515 Late Night Tales introduces a tangent to the timeline of the esteemed artist curated compilation series with ‘After Dark’: a DJ led, club focused mix which – as expert compiler Bill Brewster describes – “is dance music for people who know how to make love”. After Dark. It’s New York at 4am with the lights off and the strobes flaring. It’s a Dalston basement with slow chugging basslines propelling a dancefloor. It’s a starlit night on the coast of Croatia with glittery girls and burnished boys grooving to 110bpm anthems. It’s great dance music with the Bosh-O-Meter turned to 0. If you want pounding trance, Lance, you’ve come to the wrong place. If you want a drop, break or explosion every 16 bars, then Swedish House Mafia is that way. This is music for dancers who know to move. It’s slow release carbs, with a startlingly high pleasure count. We’re starting slow and staying that way. Groove is in the art.

Unearthed gems include a brilliant Padded Cell mix of the Doves that’s thus far remained in the CD wallets of the lucky few, a previously unreleased remix of the magnificent Twin Sister, TBS ft. Jamalski, a brilliantly off the wall Joakim production, plus the rare-as-hen’s-teeth mega disco tune ‘Love The Way You Love Me’ by Yorkshire’s finest diva-comic Marti Caine.

A1: MARTI CAINE – Love The Way You Love Me (Remastered)

For anyone under 30, the Marti Caine won’t mean much, but the those of slightly longer of tooth, will recall her as the winner of New Faces (a sort of seventies X-Factor), beating off victoria Wood and Lenny Henry. Although she did record several albums and as is evident here, she had a terrific voice, she was primarily known as a stand-up comic. The song was produced by Barry Blue who was responsible for several disco hits during this period (and also a pop star in his own right in the glam rock era). Marti sadly died of cancer in 1995 at the age of 51.

A2: DOVES – Compulsion (Padded Cell Mix) (Previously Unreleased) Well, we all know Doves, and their former incarnation Sub Sub, as one of Manchester’s finest exports with a fine line in beautifully crafted songs and the occasional outbreak of Balearia (‘Space Face’ by Sub Sub, for instance). ‘Compulsion’ is culled from their last studio album, 2009’s Kingdom Of Rust and Padded Cell’s previously unreleased mix has been knocking about since then, patiently waiting for us to be able to present it to you here.

B1: TWIN SISTER – All Around And Away We Go (Hotel Motel Mix) (Previously Unreleased) Recently, Twin sister are perhaps as well known for Kendrick Lamar’s appropriation of their song ‘Meet The Frownies’ as anything else, but they’ve so far released two very good albums, the last, In Heaven, on Domino. Based in Long Island, All Around And Away We go was their debut single for the UK indie and this Hotel Motel remix, is previously unreleased.

B2: TBS FT. JAMALSKI – Extraterrestrial Manoeuvres In The Dark (unavailable on vinyl) One of very few original tracks that appeared on the brilliant and influential Tigersushi compilation More G.D.M. that came out in 2002. It was produced by Joakim Bouaziz in collaboration with Jamalski and is our favourite slice of modern hip hop. We wish Joakim would do more, in fact. Available from 03.05.2013

Fuelled by soul/funk & disco, the electro-injected sound of Detroit’s hip-hop heads, and experimental electronics fom the early analog synthesizer era (Moggi, Moroder, Bernard Fevre), Parisian beat-wizard Fulgeance delivers his own vision of club funk and future beats. Hyperactive by nature, his productions (as Fulgeance, Peter Digital Orchestra or Souleance) have served as a showcase […]

While you can pick up a minimal techno 12inch with your coffee to go in Berlin, and dine to a soundtrack of click house in Montreal, the US electronic music scene is far less overt. There may be a demand for the more mainstream, big-room jocks and bad Ibiza comps, but the strength of the […]

Munich based Gomma label celebrates its 100th release with the “Gommagang 4” compilation.

The two leaders of the pack, aka (Italian) Mathias Modica and (German) Jonas Imbery are the founders of the Gomma label and its main activists. Having launched the label at the start of the new millennium, they have released two artist albums and created a small underground empire for themselves. Part of a new scene of freestyle labels that connect music with design, alternative art and cutting edge fashion, Gomma are the German brothers to New York’s DFA and Whateverwewant, Belgium’s Eskimo and France’s Ed Banger, Tigersushi and Kitsuné. A global family, armed with a naked smile and a flat beat, they’re here for the post-minimal generation …

It’s a great honour when a band like Franz Ferdinand asks an underground producer to remix a song. When Röyksopp, Yello, Annie, Mylo and even Roxy Music call the guy as well to ask for a mix you can be quite sure that the producer is more than just one of many one hit wonders. […]
