D3 Arthur Russell – Calling All Kids (Walter Gibbons Mix) 7.16

Walter Gibbons remains one of the most important and unheralded DJ / remixers in New York dance music history, a pioneer of reel to reel edits and the art of the remix and a tangible link between early hip hop and disco through his quickfire turntable skills developed during the mid-70’s.

At his famed residency at Galaxy 21 (alongside a then young percussionist, Francois Kevorkian), Gibbons perfected his turntable prowess, mixing two copies of records seamlessly at a similar time to Kool Herc’s famed block parties across town in the Bronx in 1975. He was among the first to make his own reel to reel edits of tracks, extending breaks and restructuring tracks specifically for the dancefloor. As a direct result, he was the first DJ to be granted access to multi-track tapes as Ken Cayre’s Salsoul Records brought him in to re-work Double Exposure’s ‘Ten Percent’ in ’76, a mix that would set the blueprint for disco, the 12″ format and all future dance music mixes.

This compilation focuses on some of the more adventurous and ground-breaking mixes that Gibbons produced during the disco era including a freeform treatment of Dinosaur L’s ‘Go Bang’, Paradise Garage favourite ‘You Are My Love’ by Sandy Mercer and underground disco rarity, ‘I’ve Been Searching’ by Arts & Craft.

KEY POINTS:
– Reissue of the definitive compilation of 12” mixes by Walter Gibbons
– Features rare and acetate-only mixes released widely for the first time
– Includes full Walter Gibbons biography by author Tim Lawrence + rare photos
– Original LP release in-demand and now fetching large sums on Discogs Available from 15.09.2017

Reuben Bell – Superjock / Make Love To Funky Music
Friday, August 18th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Reuben Bell – Superjock / Make Love To Funky Music

Image: 1611301 Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Reuben Bell began singing in local clubs. He first recorded for the local Murco label in 1967 before moving to the Silver Fox and House of Orange labels. In 1975 he released his first 45rpm single for Alarm Records (“Superjock” b/w “I Still Have To Say Goodbye”) which was produced by Wardell Quezergue. Neither side made any noise back then but 24 years later “Superjock” was included in DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist’s Brainfreeze mix.

Since then it has become a classic and it has been played constantly by hip hop and funk djs all around the world. It has appeared on a handful of (mainly bootleg) compilations over the years so we are proud to present the long-overdue, fully licensed re-issue on its original format.

You may check out Tramp’s “Countdown to… Soul” (TR-9067) compilation which contains “Superjock” as well as some other fine Rare Grooves. Available from 25.08.2017

EKO – Funky Disco Music
Thursday, October 6th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on EKO – Funky Disco Music

Image: 1606778 The latest vinyl slice from FBNM sees us head to the depths of central Africa via Paris to track down a feast of rare seventies afro funky jams from Cameroonian master musician EKO. We’ve brought FBNM favourite Riccio along for the journey too, who has provided us with a fantastic Rerub coaxing out some modern dancefloor sensibilities and production sparkle.

Eko Roosevelt Louis has had a music career spanning over forty years, born the grandson of a Kribi tribal chief, his musical persuasion beginning humbly with his village’s local church before his formal education at the Senegal conservatoire and Paris’ École Normale de Musique. EKO made a number of jazz funk and disco records in the mid seventies during a stint recording and touring in and around France before returning to Cameroon to take over his grandfather’s tribal chieftaincy, a role he still holds today! Alongside this position of office EKO has continued to work with music, performing, teaching and even leading Cameroon’s national orchestra!

The tracks we have selected for reissue are all taken from EKO’s third album, Funky Disco Music which was recorded in Paris and released on his own Dragon Phenix imprint. Sung in a combination of English and EKO’s native tongue we’ve lined up a real excursion in feel good afro-jazz, funk and soul made purely for dancing feet and boogying butts!

All tracks have been officially licensed and lovingly remastered for this special release by Andreas [Lupo] Lubich (CALYX Berlin), packaged alongside Riccio’s sympathetic work in the cutting room on 12″ vinyl with a special interview with Eko Roosevelt Louis himself!

Image: 1604543 The Young Senators are an exemplary progenitor of DC’s hyper-local, hyper-celebrated Go-Go scene. Peers of Chuck Brown’s Black Heat and Soul Searchers, the septet was led by energetic singer and conga player Jimi Dougans, and featured saxophonist LeroyFlemming, guitarist Calvin Charisty, keyboardist Frank Hooker, drummer James Johnson, bassist Wornell Jones, and trumpeter Phillip Guilbeau. The band issued two singles on the the tiny Innovation label, before joining up with Motown’s Eddie Kendricks in 1972 for his sophomore effort People…Hold On. The Young Senators’ fuzzed-out brand of psychedelic soul is often bootlegged, but finds it first legitimate release in 45 years via these remastered sides.

SunPath – Dream Music
Thursday, June 2nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on SunPath – Dream Music

Image: 1604453 SunPath is the 1980s outsider New Age music of nomadic
journeyman Jeff Berry.Self-released and privately distributed around
the southwest United States in 1980 and 1984, the coveted material
is now seeing the light of sun for the first time since its genesis.
Currently living in rural Wyoming, Jeff reflects on the Dream Music
to Leaving Records:
“In 1980 several unique events prompted me to jump from the edge
of my known world into other spaces and other places … during the
early 80s, each year I chose a vision or theme and created a work
of music based upon it.
One of the many things that made working on the SunPath music
compositions so interesting and compelling is that in order to evoke
visual images I would spend considerable time searching for specific
sounds. To do that I constructed many different kinds of instruments
and devices – the following details some of this process and how I
combined these acoustical sounds electronically to create a blend
of music not really describable from either medium – all treated with
experimental tape-transferring to induce artifact and generation of
overtone sequences.
In the years that followed, I became more acutely aware of walking
upon the borderline of other dimensions of reality. Even as I write at
this moment if I step outside into the snow and look at a single pine
needle or twig, it glows and shimmers as if flickering in and out of
the solid reality we most normally inhabit. Everything in the natural
world has this quality and I am most perplexed and astounded at
every moment of my being.”

Yasimin and the Snowflake Dragon (1980):
1. Jasmine
2. Snow Flake Dragon
SunPath2 (1984):
1. Gá Te
2. Stream and Crystal

• Privately-issued New Age/Psychedelic gems from 1980 and 1984, revived and reissued by Leaving Records

Hunee – Hunch Music
Friday, May 15th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Hunee – Hunch Music

Image: 1597154 Hunee presents his debut album “Hunch Music” this Spring. “Hunch Music” is the striking assembly of the artist’s versatile inspirations and productional talent. It is a rich musical journey that latches onto you and doesn’t let go easily.
Hun Choi, better known as Hunee, is a Korean Berliner who moved to Amsterdam over a year ago. In Berlin he used to work in a record store where he could extend his unquenchable enthusiasm for music. The connection with Rush Hour was a natural continuation of his musical path.

Firstly the DJ emerged, secondly the producer. As a DJ, Hunee manifested himself as a fine connoisseur of classic and contemporary music. Always smiling, he is determined to share every fine record he finds with the world. Over the past few years, Hunee the producer has put out some highly acclaimed EPs, but only a handful. The producer went quiet for a moment, but “Hunch Music” proves Hunee’s unstoppable character.

“Hunch Music” is rather special: it is a cinematic journey from the beginning to the end, with scenes we haven’t encountered before. It starts with “Woods” as the perfect introduction – a moody, mystic night haze that quickly changes into a warm and soothing whole. Following with “Crossroads”, the mystery transcends into something that moves us to the dance floor, and we’re not sure whether we want to keep moving or we just want to listen. “Hunch Music” has a nocturnal aura, an organic groove, and moments of glorious acid. It takes us up and throws us down, gently, while subjecting us to many cinematic and musical elements.

For an artist who is also an avid vinyl collector, it might be difficult to ensure that his numerous inspirations do not distract from his artistic signature. Hunee’s production work is as colorful as his character, displaying a broad spectrum of his inspirations that manifest themselves in a surprising and seductive artistic entity.

Flip over for ‘Time Actor’, a nine-minute electronic dance epic from Richard Wahnfried, an alias of German experimentalist Klaus Schulze, followed by the Baldelli-favoured 7” version of the Belle Stars’ percussive pop gem from 1982 ‘Iko Iko’. The second disc keeps the pressure up with the heavy mid-tempo Afro-electro vibe of KSB’s Misaluba plus chugging funk workout ‘The Pressure’ from South London outfit 400 Blows and Ryuchi Sakamoto’s stunning analogue synth dreamscape ‘Plastic Bamboo’. Next up is Ba Ba Go Go from Topo, an extremely hard-to-find minimal Italo masterpiece with the dirtiest sleaziest bass and guitar riffs, crazy synths and wigged-out cat noises followed by the equally funky and only slightly less out-there instrumental version of B-Boy classic ‘Rapper Dapper Snapper’ from Edwin Birdsong.
