Damu The Fudgemunk – How It Should Sound Vol.1 (Bone Colored)
Thursday, August 15th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Damu The Fudgemunk – How It Should Sound Vol.1 (Bone Colored)

Image: 1555395 Repress as bone colored vinyl! “I just want to do hip-hop the way I hear it in my head. It’s about a mood and what records I find: I love digging and finding things that I want people to hear. That’s the beauty of this art form to me. I really don’t consider my sound a throwback, I consider it a method of production, a distinct approach to making music.” – Damu The Fudgemunk

Born and raised in Washington DC, Damu The Fudgemunk of the hip hop group Y Society has been building a loyal fanbase through his soulful, multi-layered beats, which he crafts using little more than an Akai MPC 2000, a huge record collection and a stack of floppy discs. With How It Should Sound Volume 1 & 2, Damu looks to continue to build upon his already solid discography, while simultaneously reaching new fans and keeping his core audience satisfied with new music. This release bears all the hallmarks of Damu’s signature aesthetic. Crunchy drums bolster intricately woven narratives of soul-infused samples in compositions that thump and groove all at the same time. Horns appear from nowhere before dissolving sumptuously into the mix. Layers are steadily unveiled only to gradually fold back in on themselves. As with Damu’s previous releases, retailers and fans should expect this release, especially the limited vinyl versions, to move rather quickly.

Monophonics – Mirrors (Ltd. Colored Vinyl)
Monday, January 15th, 2018 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Monophonics – Mirrors (Ltd. Colored Vinyl)

Image: 1617309 Fuzzed out and psychedelic covers of rare and classic tracks performed by San Francisco’s Monophonics.
Monophonics are back with a six-song EP that fuses the complimentary and explosive soul, rock and funk influences, proving themselves to be the rightful inheritors of the Bay Area’s impressive psychedelic soul sound. Mirrors is comprised entirely of cover tunes, except that I doubt you’ve ever heard of half the deeply funky and soulful originals that inspired these soulful, tastefully produced, and timeless Monophonics treatments. “We wanted to do a couple songs that were more familiar to people and then shine some light on groups we’re big into,” lead singer, keyboardist and co-producer Kelly Finnigan explains. It takes a lot of guts to cover your favorite songs, your van jams, that song you play as a shot of inspiration to break-up a marathon studio session. “Not only are these great songs, but these are artists that we listen to and are influenced by.”

“It’s not about making records that sound old, it’s about making records that sound cool,” Kelly says. Not that he and the other five members of Monophonics mind if you confuse their albums for classic-era recordings. Even musician friends regular mistake a sweaty and greasy Monophonics original for an unheard Bar-Kays’ side, or a deep soul cover tune might pass for an original to a novice ear, except that Kelly makes sure to give credit where credit is due, which is what they do explicitly on this EP, Mirrors.

Even the familiar tunes, iconic, better said, receive a fresh treatment as instrumentals, despite their ubiquity as vocal songs. The EP opens with a ‘tip of the cap’ to The Main Ingredient’s version of “Summer Breeze” before the band unfolds a hazy, mellow-funk opus worthy of inclusion on a Bob James CTI album. The next four songs, all featuring vocals, range from the lowrider soul ballad, a cover of the The Invicibles’ “My Heart Cries” with a pleading and plaintive vocal by Nicole Smith, to the psychedelic blues stomp, “Lying,” originally by the archetypical psychedelic soul band nearly signed to Motown, Black Merda. Add in Kelly’s monster vocal take on Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons Northern Soul classic, “Beggin” (to be released as a 7” single with an instrumental version on the b-side), and the deep-funk pop-soul of Nu People’s “I’d be Nowhere Without You” with back-up vocals by Jeanine Jones and Veronica Johnson, and you have a highly-entertaining, toe-tapping, backbone-slipping, masterclass in deep funk and soul.

The final tune is the band’s singular take on the Mamas and the Papas hippie standard, “California Dreaming,” as an explicit and heartfelt tribute to their fans in Greece. The discerning music lovers of Greece fell in love with Monophonics after their 2012 hit “Bang Bang” resulting in multiple tours of the Mediterranean, where these native Californians imbibed on the fine ouzo, good vibes, and Grecian hospitality. Gifted a prized bouzouki (a traditional Greek guitar) by a local fan, Monophonics’ guitarist Ian McDonald and band infused this classic pop song with a soulful cinematic air and Mediterranean flavor, evoking a tune from an imagined Fellini film with a soundtrack by David Axelrod.

Catch the band on the road this Spring to hear some of these songs, favorites and new tunes from their forthcoming LP.

1. Summer Breeze
2. My Heart Cries
3. Beggin’
4. Lying
5. I’d Be Nowhere Today

Damu The Fudgemunk & Raw Poetic – The Reflecting Sea (Colored)

Image: 1616899 As music continuously evolves, times change and new ideas and movements come & go. All of this functions in tandem with scientific, technological, social and political advancements in our society. The biggest component to that evolution is the people. There are creators and consumers. One cannot exist without the other. Throughout art, the audience defines quality, but artist has the power to introduce change and shift perception. Execution is key. The masses are always hungry for something fresh. Sometimes we’re at the forefront of new trends and sometimes we find comfort innovating the past. No matter what, musicians have a responsibility to bridge the gap. Raw Poetic and Damu the Fudgemunk meet all of the above. Produced entirely by the artists, the new album “The Reflecting Sea” revisits sonic textures of yesteryear and combined with their own distinct ears for music, have created something uniquely foreign for the music world in our time. Speaking of the times, Raw Poetic’s lyrical subject matter is nothing short of relevancy. Speaking from an observatory perspective in addition to his own personal experiences, the album’s content is infinitely relatable.

Although known primarily as hip hop acts, both Damu and Raw P stretched out to expand what the genre is known for. The combination of elements from the mix of live instrumentation, improvisation and sampling to the range of styles including jazz, fusion, rock, electronic and soul make The Reflecting Sea unlike anything else. Captured and recorded in it’s rawest form, the album is honest expression. Masterminding the festival sounds is Damu the Fudgemunk. His voice is absent from the recordings, but his presence is immediately noticed throughout the 40 minute exhibition. Packed with tons of beats, tons of scratching, original compositions, upbeat and signature atmosphere, there’s no question who’s behind the boards. With the average tempo of over 100bpm, this is one of the most energetic releases in Redefinition’s catalog. Raw P and the Fudgemunk aim to revitalize listeners of all types with their original sound. They call it “The Reflecting Sea: Welcome to a New Philosophy.”

Raw Poetic (MC), hails from the DMV area by way of Philadelphia. In addition to several collaborations with Damu the Fudgemunk, he’s recorded 6 albums as a member of Panacea, 1 album with K-def, 1 album with Kev Brown and recent features with Brous One in which all have been met with critical acclaim.

Damu the Fudgemunk (producer/DJ) is a DC native who co-owns and operates Redefinition Records. With several successful releases as a solo artist, his music has garnered a reputation in the last decade for it’s consistent quality and conceptual structure.

Image: 1616443 “Hamad Kalkaba and His Golden Sounds 1974 – 1975” I remember the day clearly. I was searching for treasures in a record shop in Yaoundé, the Capital city of Cameroon, when suddenly I came across a 7-inch record with a picture of a young man wearing a traditional hat and bearing the marks of several imposing vertical scars on the side of his face, carved when he was just a boy as a reminder of his heritage in the Musgum tribe of the northern part of the country.

The record contained two songs – ‘Gandjal Kessoum’ and ‘Touflé’ – by an artist I had never heard of before named Hamad Kalkaba. Both cuts were raw classics of fuzzed-out bass, pin-sharp horns, built upon the unshakable foundation of Northern Cameroon’s mightiest rhythm: the Gandjal. The shop owner – who noticed that was listening to the same record over and over again – finally said to me ‘There is another single with a green cover of the same artist, if I am not mistaken’.

Over the next six years I searched for that ‘green cover’ and finally found it in a record collection belonging to an old bar in Parakou in northern Benin. While most of the records had been beaten and worn by a life spent in the jukebox, this one had been sitting in its paper sleeve for forty years, untouched and unplayed, seemingly waiting for us to pick it up and rip the two soulful Gandjal tunes from it, the masterpieces ‘Fouh Sei Allah’ and ‚Tchakoulaté’.

These two records, plus a third simply named ‘Nord Cameroon Rhythms’ constitute the entire discography of Hamad Kalkaba. Neglected for decades by all but the most devoted collectors of Afro music, Hamad Kalkaba and the Golden Sounds at long last gathers together the body of work of one of Cameroon’s forgotten geniuses.

But unlike many musicians who emerged from nowhere, recorded a few singles and vanished again, Kalkaba hadn’t disappeared. Far from it. He was a distinguished public figure, a retired Colonel in the army of Cameroon, and a former member of Cameroon’s Olympic Selection Committee. When we tracked him down he was serving as president of the Confederation of African Athletics. And Although Kalkaba’s job kept him busy, and he seemed initially dismissive of the music he’d made as a young man, he turned out to be an enthusiastic ally in this project. He arranged interviews, helped fill in the blanks and, when we finally met him in Yaoundé in 2016, provided us with photographs, lyric sheets and notes.

During the interview Kalkaba explained how the songs recorded in the mid 1970s were part of a movement, a movement initiated by musicians from all around Cameroon who, with the help of keyboards, drum kits and electric guitars, had started to modernize the traditional rhythms of their regions. For Kalkaba it was no different and backed by his band the Golden Sounds, devoted himself to the promotion of the sounds of northern Cameroon.

One of the aims of Analog Africa is to showcase the colorful diversity of styles that exist in Africa and its diaspora and today we are very proud to be able to give these Gandjal tunes their first worldwide release.

founder and Reinforced Records founder Marc
Mac, the Visioneers project frst appeared in
2005 with seminal album ‘How About A Game of
Chess’, shortlisted for Gilles Peterson’s coveted
Worldwide album of the Year award. For the

hip hop beats from the golden era, retaining the
feel of those extended, looping grooves whilst
also re-introducing the excitement and
musicianship of the records from which they
were sampled: ‘Dirty Old Hip Hop’ was born.
Drawing on the musical talents of Brad Somatik
and 4hero drummer Luke Parkhouse, this largely
instrumental album also featured stunning
performances from rappers Capitol A and Voice.
An artist who was introduced to jazz music by his

TOKiMONSTA – Lune Rouge (Colored Vinyl)

Image: 1611721 TOKiMONSTA’s sound has always kept one foot in the pop stratosphere, but Lune Rouge finds her diving in with glee. Her effervescent beats serve as the perfect framework for these gorgeous songs: Malaysian singer-songwriter Yuna weaves in and out of water-droplet tones and a stuttering chipmunk’d sample on lead single “Don’t Call Me.” The MNDR-featuring “We Love” serves up perfect summer vibes with aquatic synth stabs and an instantly infectious chorus. Featuring a searing vocal take from Selah Sue, “I Wish I Could” fuses the clean-sounding classicism of contemporaries like Rhye with a buzzing throb that embodies the modern cool of contemporary R&B—and “No Way,” with features from Isaiah Rashad, Joey Purrp, and Ambre, sounds lovingly ripped from the dusty glory days of 90’s hip-hop.

Ernie Fresh x Mophono – California Colors
Saturday, August 26th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ernie Fresh x Mophono – California Colors

Image: 1611676 The California Colors EP is a pilgrimage to a sacred place. The trio
Ernie Fresh, Mophono, and legendary electro producer Egyptian Lover
bow at the altar of the artform, offering only the realest expression of
the elements. It’s is the four elements, graffiti, breaking, emceeing and
deejaying, in harmonious, head-nod bliss.
From Ernie Fresh’s dedicated toast, “this one is going out to all the
straight up, motherfucking b-boys,” the California Colors EP calibrates to
a symposium dedicated to the breakers on linoleum, and the renegade
artists that paint in rustoleum. The title track is a head trip down the
krylon aisle as Fresh dreams of Oxnard Oranges and Gardenia Greens
he’ll ignite to the shell of a clean train. Fresh is most notable as the
ring leader with the Rakim cadence on DJ Shadow’s “The Sideshow”
from 2016’s The Mountain Will Fall, but he’s cut his teeth in Northern
California as a member of the group Who Cares. Behind the boards is
San Francisco producer Mophono and the legendary Egyptian Lover.
The two producers encapsulate a sound that feels like the result of
getting lost in video clips of Detroit’s legendary The New Dance Show
footage. The California Colors EP is a living time capsule of electro
futurist production, particularly Egyptian Lover’s mastery of the 808.
It’s the result of Mophono obsessing over Kraftwerk’s “It’s More Fun To
Compute” and Just Ice’s “Little Bad Johnny,” only to arrive at legendary
Rusk Studio in the presence of creator of “Egypt Egypt.”
The California Colors EP is dedicated to the ones that grew up on
Rapmasters tapes in their Walkmans, clipped to their shorts as they
pedaled through the neighborhood on BMX bikes. It’s for the ones that
snuck out through the bedroom window at midnight with a Jansport full of
krylon cans. If you had a black book with no blank pages or a mountain of
D batteries in the waste bin, this EP will have you seeing colors as bright
as the fresh paint on a burner.

Blitz The Ambassador – Diasporadical (Ltd. Colored Vinyl/LP+MP3)
Saturday, November 12th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Blitz The Ambassador – Diasporadical (Ltd. Colored Vinyl/LP+MP3)

Image: 1607414 Blitz The Ambassador – More organic rap meets west african sounds from Ghana.

The visionary sound of Blitz The Ambassador has been years in the making, with each album crafted to reflect a sonic and visual narrative unique to Blitz’s personal experience. His fourth studio album ‘Diasporadical’ exemplifies this trajectory. Blitz spent a great deal of time traveling between Accra, Salvador Bahia and Brooklyn experiencing the similarities between the African diaspora. “The album title ‘Diasporadical’ was born out of this experience” Blitz explains. ” The radical notion that no matter how fragmented the African diaspora is, the influence of rhythm and spirituality remains largely the same.”

On Diasporadical, Blitz conjures his signature blend of Classic Hip-Hop and Contemporary African rhythms, enlisting producers like Optiks and IAMNOBODI to create a seamless fusion of live instruments and hard hitting beats. To bring his vision to life, Blitz assembled a supporting cast of continental and diaspora African artists such as Tumi, Akua Naru, Kamau, Patrice, M.anifest and Somi. The sonic result is a three act narrative, crafted like a stage play.

Diasporadical offers itself as a study of intersections between the global African experience and struggle. No track exemplifies this more than A(wake), written in response to police brutality and the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement in America. Inspiration also came from the ‘Fees Must Fall’ movement in South Africa and the Afro-Brazilian protests during the Olympics.Besides it’s politically charged message, Diasporadical also explores themes common in Blitz’s past work. Immigration (Hello Africa), Spirituality (Heaven), Nostalgia (Long Time Coming) and Love (Juju Girl).

To reinforce these themes, Blitz directed a 15 minute short film called ‘Diasporadical Trilogia’. The story follows a woman who mysteriously wakes up in three different continents. Through a magical realism lens, she shares her memories of growing up as a little girl in Brooklyn, a young lady in Accra and a middle aged woman in Salvador Bahia. With Diasporadical, Blitz has brought his sonic and visual journey full circle. From immigrant struggles on ‘Native Sun’, to touring in over 30 countries on ‘Afropolitan Dreams’, this is the album Blitz has been writing his whole life.

Pavel Dovgal – The Aura (Colored 2LP+MP3)
Friday, October 14th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Pavel Dovgal – The Aura (Colored 2LP+MP3)

Image: 1605394 ‘The Aura‘ and the belief in it can be found in almost all cultures in one form or another. Often signifying fields of energy and spirituality, an aura is a luminous radiational halo surrounding a person or object. It is said that all objects and all living things manifest such an aura. In other respects the aura has also been described as a map of the thoughts and feelings surrounding a person.
Pieced together from sounds and samples from all over the globe, the album’s aim is to charge listeners with harmony and a feeling of connectedness to the world. Reflecting on his own attitude towards life and the importance of inner balance, Pavel attempts to share some of the spiritual experiences he made while traveling.
The lengthy process of creation included numerous reworks of each track and intensive listening sessions in order to keep the balance between the essential details and those that are redundant to the album’s atmosphere.
The album includes collaborations with old friends like Mujuice, Graciela Maria as well as some newly added artists – L.A. rapper BLU, Starving Yet Full – ex-vocalist from Azari III and Mitia Dedoni, who created the haunting album cover.
‘The Aura‘ comes out worldwide on limited grey-marbled vinyl (including download code).

With ‘Honeymooon On Mars’ legendary post punk provocateurs The Pop Group open another chapter at a time when their iconoclastic contention is needed more than ever. It’s a record that finds the band unwaveringly incensed and resolute in their mutative sense of innovation, as Stewart elaborates: ‘it’s a stand against manufactured hate, a hypersonic journey into a dystopian future full of alien encounters and sci-fi lullabies’ Produced by dub titan Dennis Bovell, who worked on their seminal Y
album debut, and Public Enemy / Bombsquad legendary producer Hank Shocklee, Honeymoon On Mars represents the band’s realisation of a dream twofold collaboration.
Talking about working with The Pop Group, Shocklee said: “The Pop Group sound has a level of freedom, fun and creative musicianship in their recordings that is a special and rare find in today’s world. Their uncompromising spirit to be themselves and not worry about fitting into a musical box, sets them apart.” Long-time collaborator Bovell added: “It’s been a great pleasure to be working with the guys again. They are truly beyond good and evil.”

today’s burgeoning beat scene. A product of Watts, CA, Dibia$e
found his style in his mothers garage banging out beats while playing
video games to avoid the strife of the street life – and he continues to
grow with each and every release.
Originally released on CD/Digital in 2011, Sound Palace has

smoothness and a South Central twist into a sound wholly his own.
From Baker’s Dozen to Looney Goons to Schematiks, Dibiase’s vinyl

Tracklist LP :

A1 Leon Haywood – I Want’a Do Something Freaky To You
A2 Parliament – Star Child (Mothership Connection)
A3 The Ohio Players – Funky Worm
A4 Quincy Jones – Body Heat
A5 The Bar-Kays – Let’s Have Some Fun

B1 Roger – So Ruff So Tuff
B2 One Way – Cutie Pie
B3 George Clinton – Atomic Dog
B4 Zapp – Heartbreaker Part 1
B5 Kleeer – Intimate Connection

This laidback sound that reflected the cool, sunny image of California can be found in the Leon Haywood track sampled on
the classic “Nuthin But a G Thang”. Influenced by the groove and the tone of P-Funk music, lots of rappers dug into the
discography of George Clinton and his 2 groups Parliament & Funkadelic, with 3 tracks included in the selection. The
synthesizer/heavy bass mix was already used by DJ Quik and Eazy E’s protégés, Above The Law, sampling funk groups
such as Brass Construction, One Way, the Bar-kays or Fatback. While LBC Crew, signed and produced by Snoop Dogg,
claimed the killer track “heartbreaker” from the electronic funk group Zapp, Ice Cube took the the beat and the funky guitar
of leader Roger Troutman on “how to survive in South Central” contrasting a more melodic sound with a sample from Gap
Band. Impossible not to mention the Ohio Players with their track “Funky worm” which is the basis of any respectable Wast
Coast anthem. Finally the symbolic and versatile 2pac, who rapped on tracks having sampled tunes as varied as a spatial
jazz-funk from Quincy Jones, or an 80s classic funk from Kleer on the “California love” remix. Enjoy ! Available from 05.08.2016

Nick Monaco – Half Naked (Colored Vinyl)

7. Rolly Polly feat. Roland Harper

9. Instant Gratification
10. Bathwater

Well, well, well, the ever evolving, always intriguing Nick Monaco returns with his
latest opus, Half Naked. His Freak Flag lipstick isn’t even really all that dry from
his debut album Mating Call, but Nick is at it again, bearing more of himself than
he has ever before.
With dance music today, some think it superficial with so many musicians hiding
behind songs since they are simply songs for the club, songs to make other people
dance, but not Nick Monaco. On Half Naked, Nick steps a few feet further into his
songwriting than ever before, striving for substance by diving deep within and
writing these songs for himself. He reveals more, confidently embracing
vulnerability, and explores how much more of himself he can be. If Mating Call
was Nick dipping his feet into the water, Half Naked is Nick unabashedly diving
right in.
The album opens with “Conversation Piece” an electric jazzy tune thematically
driven by a lover’s suspicion that there might be someone else in their partner’s
world. “Physical Therapy” sets the album on fire with Nick’s strong percussive
vocal experimentation, a song that activates the imagination, hypnotizing and
drawing you deeper into the album’s intimate embrace. On the spacey
“Somewhere Along the Line”, Nick floats along with doubt and a feeling of being
lost, but still stumbles upon the strength to keep going, with the track exploding
to achieve a satisfying dramatic subtlety. The titular track “Half Naked” is a
sexual song with the feeling of a bedroom’s private innocence layered with
vulnerability, intimacy and confidence. With the song “Thin Air”, Nick makes up
the perfect person, but struggles with this fiction, and you can hear it with the
raw, beautifully metallic clash of the high hats. The piano driven “Bathwater” is a
discordantly intimate track about escaping problems, but coming to terms with
the fact that you can help yourself if you listen to yourself, a feat easier said than
Featuring a remarkable list of collaborators, but more so homies, Nick brings
these talents together to deliver his strongest body of work to date, one that
oozes intimacy with every note. David Marston’s magic on guitar contributes to
an undeniable weight to the sound of the album, and good friend Roland Harper
once again lends his sultry vocals to Nick on the imaginative “Rolly Polly”.
Rounding out the talented roster of collaborators is Richard Kennedy of Hercules
& Love Affair acclaim on the RnB ballad “For Some Reason”.
Nick Monaco is not afraid to fail or make mistakes, and this fearlessness allows
him to get the most out of his instrumentation, and he certainly accomplishes
something musically unique on Half Naked. It all feels very natural, and you can
hear the greater confidence Nick Monaco has attained through touring and his
relentless drive to produce in the studio. So, sit back, open your ears, maybe take
your clothes off and listen as Nick Monaco starts to almost bare it all. Available from 10.06.2016

Ol’ Dirty Bastard – Return To The 36 Chambers (Colored Vinyl)
Tuesday, February 23rd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ol’ Dirty Bastard – Return To The 36 Chambers (Colored Vinyl)

Image: 1602510 It’s safe to say that hip-hop has never seen an album like Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s 1995 solo debut Return to
the 36 Chambers. The brief glimpses of ODB’s unhinged genius provided by Wu-Tang Clan’s landmark
Enter the Wu-Tang album two years earlier were begging to be expanded on to a larger canvas, and,
with RZA guiding production, the album promised to give Dirty the creative license to make one of the
most bizarre, entertaining and original LPs in hip-hop history. With his raspy, drunken flow and dark
sense of humor, Dirty fearlessly attacks from all angles, throwing himself fearlessly into punchy rhyme
attacks (“Damage,” with GZA), drugged-out party jams (the monster singles “Brooklyn Zoo” and
“Shimmy Shimmy Ya”) and bizarre, grimly hilarious fantasies of sex and violence (“Don’t U Know” and
the R&B-tinged “Sweet Sugar Pie”).
Backed by RZA’s appropriately gritty, dissonant beats and appearances from the Clan, Return became
an instant hit, selling over 1 million copies and earning a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap
Album in 1996. The album stands as a high water mark in the Wu-Tang Clan’s collective creative output
and was selected as one of the Best 100 Rap Albums by The Source magazine in 1998.
In honoring the legacy of one of hip-hop’s most innovative releases, Get On Down is proud to present
this incredible and unique special edition of Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s Return to the 36 Chambers as a double

records produced solely for the diehard fans of Damu’s How it Should

for newcomers. This 2XLP collection contains more than beats, but
seeds of ambition long before the (original) harvest. Straight from the

Revolutionaries – Revolutionaries Sounds V.2 (RSD)
Wednesday, December 16th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Revolutionaries – Revolutionaries Sounds V.2 (RSD)

Image: 1599999 First Ever Reissue Of This Classic Channel 1 Material.
Housed In A Two Color Silk Screened Jacket With An 18” x 24”
Poster Of The Iconic Cover Art.
“Revolutionaries Sounds Vol. 2” is the stellar 1979 follow up to the groundbreaking 1976 self-titled first volume.
The Revolutionaries were the house band of Channel 1 studios, and their style defined the sound of reggae in the second half
of the 1970’s. The band was a who’s who of the top players of the decade, featuring the core unit of Sly Dunbar,
Robbie Shakespeare, Ranchie McLean and Rad Bryan. Augmented by a revolving cast of the top hornsmen, keyboard/organ
players and percussionists, The Revolutionaries not only backed the in-house production output of their “home base” studio of
Channel 1, but countless other productions done by producers renting the studio. The 1976 first volume released in Jamaica
was an instrumental affair, with the iconic Che Guevara image by Ras Daniel Heartman on the cover complimenting the militant
sounds contained on the album. For this 1979 follow-up originally released in the UK, Che again adorns the album, with the
tracks being a mixture of classic instrumentals recorded at various points in the few preceding years, and then previously
unreleased dubs to some of the studio’s hardest original rhythms, such as Alton Ellis’ “Tell Me” and the Enforcer’s “Ride on
Marcus.” Previous to this album, some of these tracks had been coveted dubplates on the sound system scene of the day.
Reissued for the first time ever, this is a fantastic touchstone for fans of ’70s roots reggae, and with a terrific selection of tunes
that should satisfy the hardcore roots fans, serious dub heads and across-the-board reggae fans just the same.

people with Public Assembly Volume 2, a second
installment of quality instrumentals in his signature
style. What started as a collection of music curated
with the help on his fanbase via social media has
turned into another franchise title for Redefinition

label have released numerous projects big & small
across every major format. The music heard on Public
Assembly Volume 2 is more like a family reunion than
a collection. The release unites sought after rarities,
unreleased compositions, archived demos and fan
favorites, all gathered on 2 variations of LP in gold

come as a surprise to long time fans of the DC native.

from their record collections.  The Public Assembly
series is certainly about providing sounds the fans
first.  For recent fans and newcomers, Volume 2 is a
great introductory title into the vast catalog of Damu
the Fudgemunk and will serve as the roadmap to
discovering more of his music. Designer and visual
artist Joe Buck provides the cover art continuing his
long standing partnership with Redef records. *The CD

Fat Freddy’s Drop are set to release their fourth studio album, ‘BAYS’, on October 23rd 2015. Following the worldwide success of ‘Blackbird’ in 2013, the NewZealand based seven-piece are back with ‘BAYS’, a 9-track LP recorded at the band’s BAYS Studio in Kilbirnie, Wellington a former 1950s HMV vinyl pressing plant. The predominantly studio written album draws on the lexicon of genres that have come to epitomize the bands’ sound. Opening with the slow burn funk of ‘Wairunga Blues’ the album journeys through a hybrid of reggae, jazz with techno rhythms underpinning Freddy’s signature horns and Joe Dukie’s soulful and introspective vocal, arriving finally on the crooked blues jam of ‘Novak’.
The album exudes a confidence of a band truly comfortable in their skin. “It’s been a more creative process writing this album in the studio rather than recording songs which have been well roadtested”, Freddy’s vocalist Joe Dukie said. Internationally, Fat Freddy’s Drop reputation continues to soar. Blackbird has sold over 200,000 album copies worldwide with the UK, US and Germany becoming the bands strongest markets. This success is reflected by recent live highlights including sold out gigs at London’s 10,000 capacity Alexandra Palace and 3x Sydney Opera House shows. The BAYS album tour will start in October in Australia and roll out worldwide into 2016.

Mono In Stereo – Long For Yesterday (Colored Vinyl)

fast on an open road through the heartland, thinking about what could have been.
Rum Bar Records presents to you, the other
band from Rockford IL… Mono In Stereo!!
Formed by members of 90’s pop punk stalwarts Mulligan Stu, Billy Maynard, Kevin Kalen, and
Mike Melenas packed up their 6 and 4 strings, stacked up the amps, grabbed a six- pack, drove
their van into the ground, and with new skin basher Jordan Acosta in tow, hit the garage, cranked
up the volume, and churned out some serious heartland rock ‘n’ roll anthems for the punk rock
youth in all of us.
Saddle up to the Rum Bar and pound down ” Long For Yesterday”: 12 shots of adrenaline with
fist- pumping choruses, lyrics that’ll stick like gum to yer shoe, and belted- out vocals that’ll
stand the test of time and appeal to fans of The Gaslight Anthem, Jesse Malin, Old 97’s, Lucero,

Sun Ra – The Heliocentric Worlds Of… Vol.1 (180g/Colored)
Thursday, June 18th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sun Ra – The Heliocentric Worlds Of… Vol.1 (180g/Colored)

Image: 1597859 Essential classic reissues of The Heliocentric Worlds of Sun Ra, Vol. 1 & 2 . Re-pressed for its 50th Anniversary in a limited edition on Esperanto-green, 180-gram vinyl housed within Sun Ra’s original, self-created jacket art.

Credits: Pat Patrick: baritone sax, percussion, John Gilmore: tenor sax, timpani, Marshall Allen: piccolo, alto sax, bells, spiral cymbal, Ronnie Boykins: bass, Teddy Nance: trombone, Jimhmi Johnson: percussion, Robert Cummings: bass clarinet, wood blocks, Chris Capers: trumpet, Bernard Pettaway: bass trombone, Danny Davis: flute, alto sax, Sun Ra: bass marimba, electronic celeste, piano, tympani.
Recorded by Richard L. Alderson at RLA Sound Studios, New York City, April 20, 1965

Overview: The astonishing sessions that went light years beyond “free jazz” improvisation to create music of deeply-felt, explosive and gentle gestures made from sound itself without reference to previous notions of melody or harmony. This set of tracks finds Sun Ra breaking ground by using synthesizers and having the Arkestra musicians double on percussion. Re-pressed for its 50th Anniversary in a limited edition on Esperanto-green, 180-gram vinyl housed within Sun Ra’s original, self-created jacket art.

Press Quotes: “These seven sides became the first of what many free and avant-garde jazz enthusiasts had heard from Ra. At the heart of his post-bop performances is the flexibility of the support from the Arkestra, whose percussive talents were equal only to their unquestionable abilities on other respective instruments. The probing nature of longer selections such as “Outer Nothingness” and “The Cosmos” contrasts “Of Heavenly Things,” providing Ra a chance to steer the combo’s intrepid excursions from the all-too-rare perspective of a percussionist. His tympani leads motivate the cut, which is also highlighted by Ronnie Boykins (bass) and John Gilmore (tenor sax). All the more impressive is the consistent level of improvisational skills that each member brings to the ensemble. Jimmy Johnson’s (drums) timekeeping ranges from appropriately propulsive and bombastic to a spurious foil for Ra’s seemingly maniacal prodding. Indeed, this material solidifies the progression that the bandleader had made from his former tuneful, yet ever intricate big-band type of arrangements. – Lindsay Planer, All Music Guide

“Jazz keyboardist, bandleader, and space cartologist Sun Ra (born Herman Blount) spent most of his career as the consummate outsider. He declared that he was from Saturn (by way of Birmingham, Alabama), lived communally with his ensemble the Arkestra, and was far more interested in cosmic esoterica than what his contemporaries were doing. Ra released most of his several dozen records of the ’60s on his own El Saturn imprint (and mostly just sold them at his shows), but the two Heliocentric Worlds albums, both recorded in 1965, appeared on the iconoclastic ESP-Disk label, and propagated his music to a wider audience of listeners who were open to freakiness. Both volumes are improvisations by subgroups of the Arkestra (directed by Ra), and even at their most dissonant, they’re playful and spacious — ‘Dancing in the Sun’ is off-the-cuff big-band swing.” – Douglas Wolk, #9 on Spin’s “The Top 100 Alternative Albums of the 1960s”

Recorded by Richard L. Alderson at RLA Sound Studios, New York City, November 16, 1965

Overview: More explorations of outer space by the spokesman for the space age.
When Walt Whitman wrote, “I am vast, I contain multitudes,” he could have been channeling Sun Ra. The man born Herman Blount in Alabama, who claimed he was from Saturn, was equally at home reviving Fletcher Henderson compositions based on their original arrangements or unleashing totally free-form, athematic group improvisation – and many styles in between. It was practically a given that a New York-based (as he was in the ’60s) avant-jazz performer as colorful and eccentric as Sun Ra would end up on ESP-Disk’.

The 1965 sessions that produced the two volumes of Heliocentric Worlds came during the most extremely free-form period of Ra’s career, contemporaneous with The Magic City (Saturn Records). Volume 1, recorded in April with an 11-member band, consisted of seven relatively short tracks (none over eight minutes), recorded in November with an octet, Volume 2, in contrast, was much freer and featured the side-long “The Sun Myth” and the 15-minute “Cosmic Chaos.” The horn players and bassist Ronnie Boykins have plenty of room to stretch out and take full advantage. “A House of Beauty” offers five minutes of relatively lyrical respite between the other tracks.

It’s worth getting the vinyl LP of Volume 2 just for the iconic cover designed by Paul Frick, consisting of a German astronomical chart of the solar system and portraits of Sun Ra and famous astronomers. Re-pressed for its 50th Anniversary in a limited edition on Esperanto-green, 180-gram vinyl

Press Quotes: “Even at their most dissonant, they’re playful and spacious…’The Sun Myth’ is a panoramic 18-minute fantasia in which two or three instruments at a time toss long, buzzing tones and high honks back and forth, then fall out of orbit again.” – Douglas Wolk, #9 (in tandem with Vol. 1) on Spin’s “The Top 100 Alternative Albums of the 1960s”
“Sun Ra’s work with an ensemble often presents a stated emphasis on the percussive nature of solos as well as within the group context. The underlying freeform anti-structure allows defining contrasts that ultimately establish the progressing sonic sculpture. ‘The Sun Myth’ showcases Ra’s definitive capabilities to guide his assembled musicians from anywhere within said group. …. The resulting interactions include mesmerizing bass solos from Ronnie Boykins as well as some impassioned alto sax work from Marshall Allen. Directly contrasting the works that surround it is ‘A House of Beauty.’ The emphasis shifts, juxtaposing Allen’s unfettered piccolo solos with Ra on piano and Robert Cumming on bass clarinet. …. ‘Cosmic Chaos’ is the final and most archetypal of the ensemble works that Ra and his various Arkestras would produce throughout the ’60s. – Lindsay Planer, All Music Guide Available from 17.07.2015
