Deep Street Soul – Come Alive!
Friday, June 3rd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Deep Street Soul – Come Alive!

Image: 1603930 Australia’s Deep Street Soul, since signing to Freestyle Records in 2008, have earned a reputation as being right at the grittiest end of the hard funk scene who made a big impact from the outset – with even the MC5’s Wayne Kramer saying that their version of Kick Out The Jams “… is the greatest version of the song ever recorded!”.

From their debut self titled instrumental long player, to the 2011 follow up ‘Look Out, Watch Out’ (and the addition of vocalist mighty May Johnston) this band have grown, matured and honed thier songwriting skills, as well as maintaining their rare ability to really capture the essence of the original raw funk & soul artists that inspire them.

2016 sees them return with this quite spectacular new collection. Whilst the diamond hard, driving grooves remain undiminished, there is also no doubt that the bands song writing has developed to an equally assured level. Case in point is Souls Come Alive – from Monique Boggia’s Wurlitzer electric piano intro, the blistering horns and May Johnson’s simply exemplary singing – the songs’ instant appeal will be lost on no one with an ear for genuine organic soul music.

Come Alive also features guest vocalists Joshua Tavares and Kylie Auldist – Come Alive is Deep Street Souls finest work – no if’s, but’s or maybe’s. It’s a done deal.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been five years since Cookin On 3 Burners released ‘Soul Messin’ the incredible album that included their massive crossover smash single ‘This Girl’, of which the vinyl 45 ended up being one of those records that was changing hands for crazy prices among the record collecting cognoscenti. Tall Black Guy & Karizma – A Franklin Black Excursion
Wednesday, January 10th, 2018 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Tall Black Guy & Karizma – A Franklin Black Excursion

Image: 1617210 We begin 2018 on a slightly spiritual note, and a brand new Excursion. A vinyl-only 7″ flip courtesy of a delightful dream-team duo, Tall Black Guy and Karizma.

A real pleasure to welcome these two to the fold, here with ‘A Franklin Black Excursion’ – a double-header of beautiful re-interpretations of a classic by the Queen of Soul…

For those that don’t know, Tall Black Guy is a regular favourite from our sister-label, First Word Records, on which he’s released two albums over the past few years (‘8 Miles To Moenart’ and ‘Let’s Take A Trip’). Detroit-born Terrel Wallace has built a solid rep in recent times as one of the most revered beatmakers on the planet. Initially pricking peoples ears with a series of incredible edits, he has garnered fans far & wide from Gilles to Jazzy Jeff (with whom he’s become a regular stalwart of The PLAYlist Retreat sessions). Production, remixes and collabs have included Moonchild, Little Dragon, Masego, Terrace Martin, Zara McFarlane, The Mouse Outfit and Stro Elliot.

Karizma, aka Kaytronik, aka Kris Klayton, is a deeply prolific cat from Baltimore, releasing music since the mid-nineties on assorted tips, Deep House & Techno, Broken Beat, Hip Hop and Jazz, including his massive club track last year, ‘Work It Out’. His collabs include DJ Spen, Kenny Dope, Peven Everett, Osunlade, Atjazz and releases on labels like Strictly Rhythm, Defected, BBE and Sonar Kollectiv. The list of remix projects is remarkable too, including among it Mary J Blige, Lenny Kravitz, Roy Ayers and Jocelyn Brown. Kris has been awarded various accolades as a DJ over the years, his technical prowess on CDJs being the stuff of legends.

‘Gifted People’ has a low-slung double-time beat as its backbone, cruising across a classic piano loop, whilst the flip sees ‘Kaytronik’s Gifted & Black Remix’ transposing the same groove to a solid deep no-messin’ 4/4 beat and bassline warm enough to thaw that pesky Winter ice off your dancing sneaks. Both sides are heads-down lights-off dancery affairs.

These tracks were originally only available from TBG’s fan site on a very limited release back in 2016. This is the first time these have ever been dropped on to the masses on a readily-available physical form! Don’t expect this one to hang around for very long though… Essential piece of wax.

It must be deliciously bewildering to get recognition from those who inspired you in the very beginning. French House Music DJ – producer Franck Roger is no stranger to this feeling. Various – Best of Down & Wired 3
Wednesday, May 10th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Best of Down & Wired 3

Image: 1610096 Get ready for two brand-spanking new chapters in Perfect Toy’s high octane, Down & Wired series of garage-mod-soul nuggets because the label has once again persuaded the man responsible for Volumes 1 and 2 – crate digger par excellence ‘Chan The Man’ – to unearth even more gems from his record collection!

The goodness kicks off with The Revival’s virtually unknown, but irresistible, blues-funk head nodder I Chose To Sing The Blues followed by Take 5+2’s stank slice of fuzz-heavy rnb, Motherless Child, originally (not to mention bizarrely) released on an EP handed out as a election promo giveaway for a man who later became mayor of Bonn – Hans Daniels of Germany’s Conservative party, the CDU. Elsewhere, Heather Black delivers a blisteringly fast version of Third Avenue Blues Band’s Come And Get It while The Turks provide an equally scorching take on Hendrix’s Fire. The covers (and the treats) continue with teenage band The Aftermath’s heavy take on Junior Wells’ Messing With The Kid and Hunger’s Brian Auger-ish Mind Machine. Elsewhere, Pump as well as the Sancho Brothers deliver two solid freaked-out instrumentals.

This is a super-hot collection of vintage rarities (accompanied by detailed liner notes and never-before-seen photos of the artists!) imbued with all the glorious imperfections of the golden age of the analogue era that artists now often strive so hard to recreate. Little surprise then that these cuts should sound so fresh today. Available on vinyl LP, CD and digital download.

1. The Revival – I Chose to Sing the Blues
2. Take 5+2 – Motherless Child
3. Heather Black – Come on and Get It
4. The Turks – Fire
5. The Satans – Harlem Shuffle
6. The Aftermath – Messin’ with the Kid
7. Hunger – Mind Machine
8. Noel Owen – Run to Mama Blues
9. The Sancho Bros. Band – Red Wine
10. Saints & Sinners – Amor

“LOVE IT. ‘Losin Streak’ is already my tune of the year, lovely varied soulful album, looking forward to spending more time with it …” – Flevans (Tru Thoughts/JTP)
“Been a fan of this band for a good few years, so excited to see a new release!” – The Herbaliser
“A damn fine raw Soul album these days! Lovely songwriting and great sound overall, good to see they are back!” – Renegades Of Jazz (Agogo Records)
“It’s about time! The long wait between releases has certainly been worth the wait. Fabulous production, deep grooves, and tremendous vocals – just what we’ve come to expect from one of the top sou-jazz/funk acts working in any hemisphere.” – Christopher Lawyer (88.1 KDHX FM) Available from 25.07.2014

Tommy Guerrero – No Man’s Land
Saturday, June 28th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Tommy Guerrero – No Man’s Land

Image: 1588191 Musician and skateboarder, member of the legendary Bones Brigade, prolific artist & designer, the untamed kid of San Francisco haunt back our turntables with his new album “No Man’s Land”.

From dangerously rythmic dating under a dazing sun, to melodic oasis deliciously refreshing, “No Man’s Land” marks a change in the work of Tommy Guerrero : beyond the clever alchemy of ambient jazz tinged by hip-hop and soul, T.G. reveals a mastery of a typical style that becomes unique and eternal, where are unveiled enjoyment, fun and the raw talent of a mature artist who managed to preserve the purity of his childhood dreams.

Once upon a time, the City of San Francisco gave birth to an untamed beast named Tommy Guerrero. From a very young age, the kid could skateboard up walls and down hills like no one else. He played in punk rock bands well before he could even get into the clubs legally. And he displayed an artistry in life that few folks ever even fantasize about.
It’s 2014 and the guy’s resume reads like a dream- Bones Brigade skate team in the 80’s, movie appearances, co-founder of Real Skateboards and 40’s Clothing, art director for Krooked Skateboarding, and prolific recording artist- from the “Fat Jazzy Grooves” and “Another Late Night” compilations, to albums for Mo’Wax, Galaxia, Function 8, Rush [Japan], Quannum and Ubiquity, T.G. has lead a full life. Then there’s the collaborations with Lyrics Born, Jack Johnson, Curumin, Bing Ji Ling and Prefuse 73, remixes for Money Mark/Nigo, Poets of Rhythm and Shawn Lee. His band Jet Black Crayon has toured with Isotope 217 and Tortoise. He’s scored tunes for Thomas Campbell’s surf film “Sprout”, the EA video game “skate” and had the honor of being the sole provider of music for Todd Oldham’s show “Hand Made Modern” on HGTV. His songs have been licensed for zeitgeist television shows like “Queer as Folk”, “Sex in the City” and “CSI Miami”. His concerts packed houses from the Fujirock Festival in Japan to Café DuNord in S.F. and The Knitting Factory in N.Y.C. His designs are found on Levi’s in Japan, Vans shoes worldwide, and Sutro eyewear. Tommy’s music, like his graphic design, is beguilingly simple. He sounds like a guy messing around on his front stoop, and maybe that’s exactly what he is- but the result will touch you down to your toes. From Mission District punkers to Shibuya-ku hipsters- his melodies dance lightly around your head while the rhythms build under your feet. His is SOUL music, made by a street kid raised on Santana and Bill Withers (with more than a little nod to the Clash and Public Enemy in there, too). Available from 13.06.2014

Calyx & Teebee – Strung Out
Thursday, December 26th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Calyx & Teebee – Strung Out

Image: 1586097 A speaker-blazing VIP and Calibre’s first ever Ram Records appearance! There’s no messing around here: this is a very special release. Subtle, sexy and sprung with slippery glitches, ‘Strung Out’ was one of the many reasons Calyx & Teebee’s hugely successful album ‘All Or Nothing’ resonated with so many listeners. Calyx’ gravelly vocal textures, the duo’s trademark pristine production presentation and a future-focused riddim… Everything about it shimmers with true bass soul.

And it’s just spawned these two extraordinary versions…

Calyx & Teebee’s very own VIP was debuted on Andy C’s Warehouse mix back in March. It’s been the discussion of forums, backrooms and Twitter feeds ever since. Flipping the rhythm switch from sultry halfstep to a firing 172, it maintains every ounce the original’s soul while giving the track an entirely new lease of peaktime life. A lush balance between the original’s dreamy reflectiveness and raw, slaughtering bass strikes, it’s the epitome of VIP culture. Speaking of VIPs, the second version comes from none other than Calibre. One of the most venerated men in the game, madly this is the first time he’s ever released on Ram Records. Naturally he’s marked the occasion with an exceptional remix. Reminding us of the track’s original deep sentiments, he’s applied a series of virgin layers to the blend, spirited pads, a delicate synth arpeggio, a swinging-but-sharp drum arrangement and full focus on Calyx’s vocal. One of those tunes that whisks you away to a special place without even realising… Calibre doesn’t do many remixes. But when he does, he well and truly nails it.

One killer VIP, one remix from one of drum & bass’s most respected individuals. Like we said, there is no messing around here. Enjoy!

Mayer Hawthorne – Where Does This Door Go
Friday, August 23rd, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Mayer Hawthorne – Where Does This Door Go

Image: 1582478 Mayer Hawthorne has come a long way since his 2008 debut, and right now, he says, ”Life is really great” He’s released two well-received full-length albums. had songs licensed for film and television, and toured the world with Bruno Mars, Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, Passion Pit, John Mayer, Chromeo and the late Amy Winehouse His latest, Where Does This Door Go, is due July 16th and features a host of top-flight production work from Pharrell Williams, Greg Wells, Oak (of Oak & Pop) and John Hill.

Mayer grew up just outside of Detroit in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and remembers. as a child, driving with his father and tuning the car radio in to the region’s rich musical tapestry He has produced music and played instruments for much of his life– a hip-hop producer at the start of his career- and uses skills honed as a touring DJ to create his own original dance floor jams. Throughout the years he’s cited R&B legends Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson and Barry White and inspiration, along with producers J Dilla and Mike Terry

Comfortably relocated in Los Angeles, the hat he now wears is that of a yachtsman in the mold of Michael McDonald, Hall and Oates, Loggins and Messina and Steely Dan. The old influences remain– the creative vision of Dill a and Terry, the urban elegance of Hayes, Hutson and White- but today’s Mayer is a smiling sophisticate He describes the vibe of Where Does This Door Go as ”Steely Dan meets the Beastie Boys,” which suggests both a studio serious and playfully irreverent approach. It’s no surprise that one of his favorite songs of all time is Rick James’ ”Big Time.”

In the last five years, Mayer has also grown as a singer. songwriter and in his desire for collaboration. Working with touring partners like Winehouse and Badu bolstered his vocal chops by teaching him how to use his voice as an instrument Lyrically. he’s moved away from the bitter break-up tone of his first two albums toward more diverse storytelling and personal coming-of-age content, and he’s relaxed his DIY ethos of crafting every song from start to finish.

Now he’s motivated to create soul music that can win- win on the radio, win on the charts, win over clubs and win over hearts. With Where Does This Door Go, Mayer is back to his soul foundation and hip-hop roots, and is making the most enjoyable and youthful music of his career.
