Sinan49 – Mitte Des Blocks (Ltd. Silver Vinyl)
Friday, July 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sinan49 – Mitte Des Blocks (Ltd. Silver Vinyl)

Max Shrager – Thoughts Of You
Wednesday, June 29th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Max Shrager – Thoughts Of You

Image: 1604920 Big Crown records is proud to present Max Shrager’s debut EP “Thoughts Of You”. This is a collection of songs Max recorded over the past 7-8 years, at the ripe young of 20, it’s clear
Max was born for this. Now dedicated to his band The Shacks, he spends most of his time focusing on writing and recording for their upcoming full length due out on Big Crown in 2017.
These songs are what he calls “the best of everything he has recorded up to that point”. 6 songs on a beautiful 10 picture sleeve EP, another Big Crown sureshot.

SIDE A:
Sophia
Thoughts Of You
Silver
SIDE B:
Girls Of The Galaxy
Train Song
You’re Still There

From Max:
Each song on this record represents a period of my life. Listening to them brings me back to the experiences that inspired them, like a smell that causes a flood of memories.

“Sophia”
I wrote “Sophia” in a piano rehearsal room at my high school. It started with those first two chords, and I just kept going because the harmonic movement was making sense. I came up with the chorus a few minutes before we cut the rhythm track. Tom Brenneck got excited about this one early on, which was very encouraging.

“Thoughts of You”
This one was written the summer I moved to New York City. I thought of it as a country ballad as I was writing it. It ended up having some interesting rhythms and flavors. My grandmother came downstairs to my parent’s basement as I was recording the guitar, and she was in to it.

“Silver”
I bought a 12 string Martin guitar at First Flight music and brought it to school. I ended up skipping class and sitting in the park, working on a song idea that came to me the night before. My new girlfriend had given me a silver ring, which I put in my pocket. It got all scratched up, among the coins, which made me feel guilty and provided the inspiration for this song.

“Girls of the Galaxy”
This one was really fun to record. It’s very much about the production for me, which I did with Homer Steinweiss. Listen closely for the Spanish radio crosstalk at the end.

“Train Song”
This tune is about the train ride from New Jersey to New York City that I must’ve taken a thousand times. There’s also some stuff about a trip to Las Vegas, where my dad and I walked miles out of the city on a dusty highway and ended up at a nuclear testing museum.

“You’re Still There”
This is a love song that was inspired by a specific feeling I had one night in Atlantic City. The feeling was so deep and unique that this song just poured out of me at the piano. The drums were recorded by putting the microphone under a ceramic pot. Available from 22.07.2016

Jacques Renault – Silver Machines
Wednesday, September 30th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Jacques Renault – Silver Machines

Image: 1600042 jacques Renault delivers two rare and fiery original tracks for his second release on esteemed US label Public Release, complete with remixes from Velvet Season & The Hearts Of Gold plus a Force Of Nature remix.

‘Silver Machines’ is Public Release’s eighth pressing and Renault’s second of 2015. The double single comes packaged in a deluxe jacket designed by highly acclaimed visual artist Takeshi Murata (recently featured in the New York Times). It blasts off with the schizophrenic, brain-melting groove of ‘Silver Machines’ that zips through its five minute runtime thanks to the fantastic union of precise, frenetic drums and a rolling funk bass riff. The flip finds Velvet Season & the Hearts of Gold (Gerry Rooney of Black Cock and Joel Martin of Quiet Village) slipping the original a tab of acid and getting weird.

On disc two, ‘Fromage à Trois’ is rooted in industrial percussion that sits below an elastic hook, giving the cold drums a human warmth. Japanese dons of disco Force of Nature take a swing and wrap the package on a high note. Their mix pulls the motorik drums back, to make way for a hypnotic loop that evokes thoughts of OSTs from 80s teen flicks, the sort of stuff Tangerine Dream excelled at for a good while. The song fades out and Mr. Renault’s auspicious return to Public Release ends as abruptly as it began. Let’s hope chapter three takes less than five years to be written.

Jacques Renault has been riding the waves of underground credibility for the past few years, initially renowned for being the master of the edit and releasing music on internationally acclaimed labels DFA, Permanent Vacation, RVNG, and Rekids, he has since become a producer in his own right, using samples as more of an adornment or starting point than a centerpiece.

Tim Sweeney kicked off the Public Release release schedule back in 2009. They have since focused on quality rather than quantity with only eight releases in six years including recent contributions from Woolfy and Mike Simonetti.

TRACK LISTING:

A1 – Silver Machines
B1 – Silver Machines (Velvet Season & The Hearts of Gold Remix)

Manu Delago – Silver Kobalt
Friday, February 27th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Manu Delago – Silver Kobalt

“Virtuoso” – The Times
“A masterful and sensitive musician” – The Telegraph

Available from 10.04.2015

Manu Delago – Silver Kobalt (LP+MP3)
Friday, February 27th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Manu Delago – Silver Kobalt (LP+MP3)

Image: 1595042 Manu Delago combines his mastery of the Hang – a rare and enchanting instrument – with bold arrangements, irresistible melodies and multi-layered beats on his Tru Thoughts debut Silver Kobalt. The young Austrian composer/multi-instrumentalist is highly in demand and has worked with Björk, Anoushka Shankar and The Cinematic Orchestra. This ambitious LP brings his stunning solo project into the spotlight like never before, drawing influence from pop to the avant-garde and featuring guest vocals from Isa Kurz, Anil Sebastian and Rahel.

The album ranges from hypnotic melodies and pristine bassy pop, to the more calm and enchanting sounds fashioned by the Hang. Other songs on the record explore harsh electronic sounds and experimental instrumentation, showcasing an exhilarating range of styles.

Aged just 30, Manu Delago is the world’s leading Hang player and possesses equally virtuosic skills as a percussionist and drummer alongside ever maturing instincts as a songwriter and producer. The accessible yet startlingly original sound of ‘Silver Kobalt’ draws on the experience and ideas built up by the London based Austrian native across a high-flying and diverse career to date. From overachieving teenaged rock bands, through extensive classical training, from his exploits at the cutting edge of art pop as the lynchpin of Björk’s band, to a London Symphony Orchestra commission which saw him playfully subverting their expectations, this endlessly curious artist has been honing his own style rich in melody, wit and invention.

Tying together the many sonic threads is co-producer Matt Robertson (Björk, The Prodigy, The Streets, Bat For Lashes), following his work on Delago’s acclaimed 2013 LP ‘Bigger Than Home’, the record on which he began to truly develop his current sound. This is a sound that revolves around the unique timbre of the Hang, but encompasses much more, from acoustic percussion, bassoon, piano and chimes to multi-layered beats and a variety of synths.

“Amazing percussionist and hang player” – Björk
“A masterful and sensitive musician” – The Telegraph
“Virtuoso” – The Times
“The world’s leading hang player” – Financial Times
“Very very melodic, great beats, great soundscapes, really interesting songwriting” – Jamie Cullum, BBC R2

The Feeling Nice series has been dedicated to filling in the blanks between the more well known cuts of so-called Deep Funk canon and drawing out the relationships and stories behind and between the tunes and the artists, and ultimately creating a dialogue that serves to enlighten and enliven a true anti-racist discussion of American Popular music specifically and of Global human music in general. Maytals – From The Roots
Saturday, August 26th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Maytals – From The Roots

Image: 1611659 When it comes to old-school roots reggae, few groups were as influential as The Maytals. Adding Frederick
“Toots” Hibbert’s name to the front of their billing later in the 1970s, in the earliest days they were more
egalitarian as they built their sound and legend.
From The Roots, originally released on Trojan Records in 1970 (alongside another full-length that same
year, Monkey Man), was a transitional record for the group. Leaving behind their early ska days – much like
The Wailers and other peers – they had yet to settle into the slower tempos that blew in like ganja smoke by
the mid-‘70s. As a result, music here generally gallops, and vocals fall in line.
As heard on gems like “Koo Koo,” “Got To Feel,” and “Pee Pee Cluck Cluck,” the Maytals’ lyrics tend mostly
towards love and the pursuit thereof. The group, throughout its career, was also deeply spiritual and much
of this was expressed through song – a great case in point here is “Thy Kingdom Come,” essentially a
church hymn set to reggae music.
And the album concludes with an interesting cover of the Lennon/McCartney hippie chestnut, “Give Peace
A Chance,” which is much faster than the original and quite groovy overall.
The Maytals are generally overlooked in the pantheon of reggae giants, but this is unjust. Do your part in
recognizing their legendary status by digging into this filling meal of classic Jamaican fare.

Reuben Bell – Superjock / Make Love To Funky Music
Friday, August 18th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Reuben Bell – Superjock / Make Love To Funky Music

Image: 1611301 Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Reuben Bell began singing in local clubs. He first recorded for the local Murco label in 1967 before moving to the Silver Fox and House of Orange labels. In 1975 he released his first 45rpm single for Alarm Records (“Superjock” b/w “I Still Have To Say Goodbye”) which was produced by Wardell Quezergue. Neither side made any noise back then but 24 years later “Superjock” was included in DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist’s Brainfreeze mix.

Since then it has become a classic and it has been played constantly by hip hop and funk djs all around the world. It has appeared on a handful of (mainly bootleg) compilations over the years so we are proud to present the long-overdue, fully licensed re-issue on its original format.

You may check out Tramp’s “Countdown to… Soul” (TR-9067) compilation which contains “Superjock” as well as some other fine Rare Grooves. Available from 25.08.2017

Joon Moon – Moonshine Corner

As 2015 was wrapping up, an unknown outfit called Joon Moon took the music world by surprise with its first single Chess. The four cuts on the Call Me EP, a beguiling mix of pop and soul, electronic music and jazz, melancholy and elegy, heralded a forthcoming album that was bound to leave a blast radius on landing. And while the name and vibe of the project evokes a purple veloured, oldHollywood universe, Joon Moon was borne out of a resolutely contemporary meeting of the minds – the kind the can only happen amidst our jetsetting music scene.
After ten years of touring the world playing double bass with Marc Collin’s Nouvelle Vague ensemble, alongside excursions into house music on the Yellow Productions Art of Disco compilations, not to mention co-producing Florent Marchet’s Bamby Galaxy album, it was time for songwriter/producer/renaissance man Julien Decoret to dedicate his heart and soul to a new challenge. With Raphaël Chassin, (Hugh Coltman, Vanessa Paradis, Pauline Croze) on drums, helping out with the production and arrangements, and Sébastien Trouvé as sound engineer, Decoret set out on his retromodern Joon Moon mission, laying out the contours of a world where trip-hop, jazz, soul and electronic music live side by side, sharing their joys and sorrows.
The only missing element was that one last bit of magic, a voice that could take the project to ever-loftier heights. Enter Krystle Warren. She had worked with Rufus Wainwright, and Scritti Politti’s Green Gartside, and had made forays into house music herself by providing vocals to two cuts off Hercules and Love Affair’s, The Feast of the Broken Heart. That’s not even mentioning her own band, Krystle Warren and The Faculty – and its three albums – which display her impressive grasp of soul music, folk, blues… Joon Moon’s first album Moonshine Corner, which stole part of its name from an Austin watering hole that had become a haunt during its first American mini-tour, is the sound of four people meeting at an unlikely crossroads named Melancholy. Recorded using modern studio techniques along with vintage 60s and 70s instruments, Moonshine Corner places its chips on a subtly modern vibe through twelve lovelorn tracks that weave themselves around pop and trip hop, folk and soul, jazz licks and electronic washes, digging their own groove in the river bed dug by years and years of exposure to Radiohead, Neil Young, and Zero 7. Joon Moon is also, lest we forget, a project that takes on its full magnitude on stage. The barebones live setup (drums, piano) allows Krystle’s powerful voice to fill the space, swaying from nervy to more subdued laments, hopping around tessitura in the blink of an eye. Consider the live french version of Radiohead’s I Might Be Wrong, which transports you to the fictional smoky jazz club where forgotten, old 50s star Joon Moon holds court behind the microphone. Talibam – Endgame Of The Anthripocene

Image: 1610948 Personnel: Matthew Mottel: Mini Moog, Midi Synths, Yamaha CS1x, Roland Juno 1, Roland Lucina, Arp Solus, Kevin
Shea: drums, MIDI Marimba Lumina, Preston Spurlock: cover art

Track Listing:
A1. “Antarctica shall be used for peaceful purposes only” (Article 1)
A2. Human Interference and the Failure to Ratify
A3. Reign of Primordial Tenure on the Ice Shelf
B1. The Telegenic Annexation of Territorial Expanse in the West
B2. Obsequious Resources Duly Exploited De Novo
B3. Breach of Ecology on the Seabed (Biodiversity in Shambles)
B4. Cost-Effective Drilling Enabled by Pioneering Technologies and Warmer Climates in the Southern Ocean
B5. RISE OF THE DEFENDERS OF ANTARCTICA

Overview: Endgame of the Anthropocene marks Talibam!’s return to ESP-Disk’, a partnership begun in 2009 with the
highly acclaimed Boogie in the Breeze Blocks album. Talibam! is a 14-year working unit based in New York City that can
be described in various ways — as a classic keyboards/drums expanded-jazz duo, as Dadaist provocateurs with an innate
love for the history of music, as a Fluxus-informed theater troupe, as an electronic ensemble inspired by Stockhausen,
or as a rhythm section at the cross hair of agility, speed, punctuation, and intention. Since their inception in 2003,
Talibam!’s ultimate goal has been to wed disparate ideologies through proficiency, controversy, inquiry, and
compassion. Every Talibam! album attacks from a different angle, Endgame continues this tradition of each new release
sounding completely different from everything they’ve done before, as does HARD VIBE (ESP5015), which will be
released on the same day.
Talibam! has made a geopsychic prediction: after it expires in 2048, the Antarctic Treaty System will be rejected.
As the rest of the planet will have been rendered uninhabitable due to wars rooted in overpopulation, global warming,
and the relentless exploitation of diminishing resources, human interference and the failure to ratify will lead to
international war over the sovereignty and control of Antarctica’s vast resources. Endgame of the Anthropocene is
Talibam!’s first cinematic album of through-composed ecogothic geosonics. It is the soundtrack to 2048’s despotic
nationalism and crumbling international infrastructure, underscoring an eco-mercantilistic tragedy and the desperate
plundering of the last pristine landscape on Earth. This inevitable destruction of Antarctica’s purity marks the globalenvironmental
endgame of the Anthropocene. Endgame of the Anthropocene is a dystopian sonic pronouncement of
failed socio-environmental memes, and features Talibam!’s emergence into hyperkinetic rhythm-based instrumental/
electronic music. Syncopation via polyrhythmic electronic drum and synth pads create corporeal dance floor beats that
would make a super computer perturbed. Kevin Shea is a master of cyber swing and ecowar rhythm — on this record, he
keeps it android yet anthropoid, like Aphex Twin meeting a hologram Phil Collins. Keyboardist Matt Mottel anchors wide
sweeps of analog synthesis — his sonic palette oscillating between the Silver Apples, Sun Ra, and Arca via an Arduino
beta bass drop. This music is hallucinatory composition — electronic muzik via an ethnographic sonic landscape
influenced by Parmegiani, Don Cherry, Front 242, Hailu Mergia, Vangelis, Suicide, Islam Chipsy, Stockhausen and DJ
Shadow. Available from 22.09.2017

Love makes the world go around. “two”, the second album by The Soul Session, is
full of love. Ralph Kiefer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and producer
from South Germany embarks on a stylistically diverse journey into Soul, Jazz,
Funk and World Music.
Being a highly respected session musician in the jazz as well as the crossover
scene, Kiefer made a serious impact in 2011 with “one”, the first Soul Session
album. “one” was built on a solid backbeat of Soul, Hip Hop and Funk, while “two”
now takes a step further into a spiritual and eclectic dimension. “Quantraversa”
featuring the voice of Las Vegas based neo-soul queen Georgia Anne Muldrow is
the mind- blowing opener of this album, a truly deep and intense rhythmic
statement. Quantraversa is a word which you will not find in any dictionary, but
that is not the point, says Ralph Kiefer. “This album is a journey to the inner self.
The recording process was like meditation. I often started with a loop, or an idea
for a melody. It evolved from there and I simply let it happen. When I involved the
lyricists and vocalists, my drafts sometimes took a completely different paths and
ended in something unexpected and beautifully new.”
“The Passage” is a prime example of Ralph Kiefer’s visionary working style. “I
mainly work with my mobile studio. Nowadays you can virtually record every
instrument in any place you like, you just need a good microphone. Some of my
guest vocalists also recorded their part in their own studio.” This way Tokunbo
Akinro, the voice of Tok Tok Tok, turned “The Passage” into a futuristic, haunting
soul tune. “Live Your Life”, introducing Anaj, works nicely as a kind of theme tune
for “two”. Here you have a lose groove which is tight at the same time, keeps in
control and simultaneously lets it loose. And then there’s “Wish The Beat To
Never Stop”. Ralph Kiefer is especially happy about this track. “I am a fan of Omar
since his first album on Talkin’ Loud, I am very proud that he contributed to my
album.” With his unique UK Soul stylings Omar fits perfectly to the brilliantly
understated and well-informed Soul Session sound.
It’s the two suites which are central to “two”. “Kalimba Suite” kicks off with a
stripped down piano, percussion and Kalimba session. Then “Steely Dan” gives it
away in its title, sounds like it will move straight into “Do It Again”, but then it does
not and turns into a funky Soul Session style instrumental jam. “Transformation” is
the perfect ending for “Kalimba Suite”, sticking with the Rhodes, bringing in more
synthesizers and getting quite cosmic. “Liberation Suite” has Anaj coming in
again. “Got To Go Where To Go” is pure bliss and funky fun. “Samba De Alfana”
is a spiritual and deep Brazilian, irresistible jazz-house dance floor mover. With a
motto like “Liberation for the nation” and a vocoder meeting a Caribbean style
“Funky Nassau” groove you will agree: “Open up your mind!”
“You Are Everything” uses a Horace Silver style piano motif, then adding the
sampled voice of philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti: “His philosophy is very central to
my creative process. In the troubled times we live in I think his message is more
relevant than ever. Without self-knowledge there is no basis for peaceful thought
and action.” Fatma Tazegül closes the album in taking “Never Let Me Go” to
another level with her soulful gospel voice. Think of the open mindedness and
global funk and fusion rhythm in the Seventies, but also of the Acid Jazz
movement during the Nineties and you get the picture of what “two” is about love,
peace, being true to yourself and getting involved.

Courtney Pine (Ft. Omar) – Butterfly / Rules
Friday, July 21st, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Courtney Pine (Ft. Omar) – Butterfly / Rules

Image: 1610972 No musician embodies more the dramatic transformation in the British jazz scene over the past thirty years than Courtney Pine. His debut album, Journey To The Urge Within in 1987, was the first serious jazz album ever to make the British Top 40, notching up sales to qualify for a silver disc.

Aside from being the preeminent figure in the resurgence of British jazz, Courtney became a renowned presenter and broadcaster, best known for his long running radio show for BBC Radio 2, ‘Jazz Crusade’. He was also awarded an O.B.E in the 2000 New Year’s Honours, and was also made a C.B.E in 2009 for services to Music.

As an artist always looking to work outside of and across established musical genres, it is easier to list the musicians and artists he hasn’t worked with, but now in 2017 Courtney releases brand new music featuring another British music legend of equal repute, his Freestyle Records label mate and an artist also honoured for his own creative endeavours, Omar Lyefook M.B.E.

Both tracks of this single are taken from Courtneys’ forthcoming album Black Notes From The Deep – the 19th of his stellar career. The exciting and fresh interpretation of Herbie Hancocks’ Butterfly demonstrates straight away that this is a dream team combination. With Alec Dankworth laying down the bass, Rod Youngs’ drumming underpinning the groove, the song also gives the outstanding keyboards of Robert Mitchell space to stretch out – Omars fantastic vocal performance rides sweetly on top of the dreamy backing vocals of Charleen Hamilton – and of course Courtneys’ flowing, imaginative and creative solo perfects this modern version of a much loved classic.

Rules is a brand new, collaborative composition by Courtney & Omar – the punchy drums and bass line patterns hints simultaneously at classic jazz and funkier club-centric sounds. Courtney cooks on tenor saxophone and also the organ – whilst Omar marinades the super catchy melody with that unmistakable voice.

As an introduction to the forthcoming album Black Notes From The Deep this single points the way to what 2 British legends, both exemplary in their own right – can come up with when joining forces.

C1: Penrose Steps (Dream Castle) 08:07
C2: Pandora’s Labyrinth 11:39

First ever vinyl pressing of archival recordings from 2011 by Tanning Salon (aka vaporwave legend Vektroid). This is not a “vaporwave” album however, as there are no slow-motion samples, instead it is an improvised stream-of-consciousness via cheap keyboards and drum machines photocopied to cassette. The mysterious vibe of these recordings will appeal to fans of Grouper’s more abstract early works. “Within six suites, you’ll be blissfully relaxed in a zone that’s only meant for serious drifters. Yet, a serious drifter is inside all of us. It’s just a matter of reaching that Dream Castle in your mind’s sky. The lack of directness in presentation, including the drift of the music itself, by-way of comparing it to that cool breeze that comes along and is easily as forgotten, the joyousness of memory is beheld by tones. No matter if these sounds are intricate or progressive or copied or [etc.], the memory of when-and-where stirs in listeners when releases like Dream Castle pop back up. As the conundrum’s pile in, think of Dream Castle exactly like the tan you gripped while feeling that cool breeze: as lasting as skin cells dying out, there’ll always be the digital age prepared to drift back into your life. You’ll always be able to come back to Tanning Salon’s waves of thought. Let freedom reign within the Dream Castle. We can all be attached in a state of URL minds. But most importantly, get yourself a good lax via Tanning Salon. You’ve come this far virtually. It’s time to kick up a heel or two, girl. “ C-Monster, Tiny Mix Tapes

Blay Ambolley, and his Sekondi Highlife Band (The Creator of Highlife/Afro/ Jazz Dance Music)
The Legendary Gyedu Blay Ambolley from Ghana, West Africa and his Sekondi Band has
29 music albums to his credit. The most recent album “The African Soul “was released in
2015 and still remains a hit for Highlife/Afro/Jazz dance music fans around the world.
Ambolley was born in the city of Sekondi-Takoradi, in the Western Region of Ghana, in
West Africa. The multi-talented, International, Ghanaian Musician celebrated his “Silver
Jubilee” in music in 1998. He taught himself to play the flute as a first instrument in his
early years of musical interest dating back to the age of eight, when he began playing with
his father’s flute. The young music enthusiast continued to learn the rudiments of music
from the late’ Sammy Lartey and Ebo Taylor. During the sixties, the young aspiring
musician was impressed with the music he heard on the popular radio show, “Voice of
America Jazz Hour.” That sixties show featured such jazz giants as Jimmy Smith, Max
Roach, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Ella
Fitzgerald and Billie Eckstie… all of whom became part of Ambolley’s early musical
experience.
This versatile, irrepressible singer, songwriter, producer and “musical- life-force” exploded
on the music scene in 1973 with a jazzy highlife sound called ‘SIMIGWA-DO’.
He has toured throughout West Africa, Europe, Canada, and the United States and has
performed on the same stage with some of the world’s most celebrated artistes such as,
Miriam Makeba of South Afrika, the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti of Nigeria, the late George
Howard, Angela Bofill, Norman Connors, Manu Dibango, Lakeside, Chikuzan Takahashi of
Japan, Ricardo Estrada of Cuba, Mayuto Correa of Brazil and toured Ghana with Oscar
Brashear and Michael Session. The celebrated musician has received numerous
prestigious awards, for example a lifetime achievement award and Inducted into the music
hall of fame by Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science in California and an
award from the Board of Supervisors and the City Council of the State of California for
bridging the gap between Africa and African American music. He also received a lifetime
achievement award at the Ghana Music Awards in 2013.
Very interesting: in June 2016 the Embassy in Washington DC awarded BLAY
AMBOLLEY for introducing the first ever commercially recorded rap style of music in
1973 and not the Sugar Hill Gang as the Guinness book of record says.
Gyedu-Blay Ambolley has crafted the ability to combine a unique sound and melody with
funny lyrics and dancing to his music as is well documented that “the genre of his music is
entertainingly elevating and spiritually inescapable”, such that its uniqueness transcends
all musical categories. Available from 12.05.2017

U-Roy – Dread In A Babylon (RSD)
Wednesday, March 22nd, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on U-Roy – Dread In A Babylon (RSD)

Image: 1608993 U-Roy was a true reggae pioneer, dubbed The Originator for good reason. Bursting onto the Jamaican scene in the earliest 1970s, he pioneered the vocal approach called “toasting,” which in addition to branching out Jamaican music into a new era, was also heavily influential on an American genre in its infancy: rapping. On Dread In A Babylon, his third full-length, he stretches out over traditional roots grooves provided by the Soul Syndicate and Skin, Flesh & Bones bands, riffing on topics including love (“Runaway Girl,” a 1975 single released in the UK on Virgin Records), the Bible (“The Great Psalms”), walking the straight and narrow (“Listen To The Teacher”), and even his take on governmental policy goals (“Chalice In The Palace”). The album finishes with an instrumental
version of Bob Marley & The Wailers’ “Trench Town Rock,” for good measure.
U-Roy’s style and charisma are always on display, and – as with all of his classic records – the groove rules all. Presented on black vinyl with a poster of the glorious, ganja-drenched cover art, it’s the perfect chance to revisit one of the more underrated voices in Jamaican musical history.

Sometimes in life you find yourselves at a point where you need to
walk away and leave something behind if you ever want to go back
to it. Other paths must be walked, other experiences learnt from to
give you a fresh view of where you’ve come from. In that sense
going back to the roots, rediscovering their past with fresh eyes, is
the concept behind Richard Dorfmeister & Rupert Huber’s new
Tosca album, ‘Going Going Going’.
For over two decades and several albums Tosca has served as a
vehicle for Richard and Rupert to express their personal moods and
impressions, each release holding up a mirror to their inner lives.
Now though after ten albums the journey has come full circle and
once again they’ve returned to the kind of instrumental tracks, full of
deep beats and dubbed out textures that made Tosca’s name.
The result is ‘Going Going Going’, an album that Tosca fans will
immediately recognize and yet one that doesn’t just trade on former
glories. Hitting the ground running opening track ‘Import Export’
sounds like a Lee Scratch Perry version of a Ennio Morricone
soundtrack, a motif reoccurs throughout the album, most notably on
‘Dr Dings’, their reinterpretation of America’s classic ‘Horse With No
Name’.

Reaktionen:
“Amazing percussionist and Hang player” – Björk
“Intriguingly beautiful … A mercurial sound indeed” – DJ Mag
“Captivating and compelling … truly mesmerising” – i-D
“A masterful and sensitive musician” – The Telegraph

Key Marketing Points:

– Features collaborations with Douglas Dare (Erased Tapes), Erik Truffaz (Blue Note) and Pete Josef (Sonar Kollektiv, Reprazent)
