Manana presents the third release on Manana//Records, an album collaboration between the UK’s Soundspecies and Ache Meyi, based in Santiago de Cuba. The project was born in April 2016 in Santiago, in the balmy weeks leading up to Manana Festival and is the culmination of two chaotic weeks of rehearsals at the Casa Del Danzon and two sessions at the legendary Egrem studios. ‘Ache Meyi’ can be translated into ‘Ache’ (‘power’ or ‘blessings’ in the Yoruba language) and ‘Meyi’ (‘double’ or ‘twin’ or ‘twice’) and the band have their very own power twins, Hector and Rafael. Hector is the senior, patriarchal fgurehead of the group alongside his apprentices Alieke and Rafael. Two female singers, Alina and Maire, complete the lineup. The band’s identity is rooted in an interlocking web of afro-Haitian rhythms like bembe, vodu, gaga and merengue, absorbing these folkloric traditions from the neighbourhoods that they grew up in. Soundspecies are brothers Henry and Olly Keen, a Producer/DJ duo from Dorset who explore the connections between the rhythms of traditional folkloric percussive music and the sounds and forms of electronic dance music. Integrating electronics and melodies initially proved hard: “We were struggling to respond to the frenetic, seemingly impenetrable web of rhythmic sounds, and the singers’ sense of tonality was quite free, jumping from one key to n unrelated one within songs,” recalls Olly. However, at the legendary Siboney Egrem Studios in Santiago, they began separating the instruments, breaking the music down into textures and patterns and trying new directions with the sound. At a later session, Ache Meyi then jammed with kick and snare sounds on the MPC, playing to bembe rhythms recorded during the frst session.
Olly continues, “With a virtuoso like Hector, who has dedicated his whole life to his art, it could have been a challenge for us to suggest respectfully that he does it differently but he was the most open-hearted, patient and positive man. The show at the Manana festival was a euphoric experience for us. We wanted the album to capture and distil some of the energy from that night.”

KEY POINTS:
– Groundbreaking fusion of Cuban folkloric music and electronics
– Third release on MANANA / Records following the groundbreaking MANANA / Festival in Santiago, Cuba in 2016

Les Yper Sound presents an all-instrumental journey through the many worlds of drums and saxophones. In early 2016, New York session musicians Miles Arntzen and Jas Walton—who both currently play in Afrobeat ensemble Antibalas—began experimenting with their respective instruments in Miles’s Greenwich Village basement. They composed demos that were made up of Miles’s percussion, Jas’s woodwinds, and the sounds of everyday objects.

The style of recording and manipulating everyday ‘non-musical’ sounds was born in Paris during the 1940s and dubbed “musique concrète.” This revolutionary process seeped into pop music in the mid-‘60s, and now—due to ever-advancing music technology—it is a staple of mainstream music. Explorations of Drums & Sax is a hat tip to the novelty of recorded sounds back when they were still weird and way out.

As well as experimenting with the early laboratory process of musique concrète, Miles notes, “usually one of us was coming from something else, from a rehearsal with so-and-so right to my basement and just jumping right in. There was no time to think about what might be seeping in influence-wise, but it was always related to all the other things we were doing.” The duo began working together in 2009 when they started the band EMEFE in jazz school. Between each of their sidemen gigs with other artists, they steal time to get together and spin their own creations.

While touring with Luaka Bop’s William Onyeabor supergroup Atomic Bomb!, Jas met Beastie Boys’ synth master Money Mark and Sudanese-pop artist Sinkane (Ahmed Gallab). In March, the four of them convened in Brooklyn to record under the project name Les Yper Sound, titled after Pierre Henry’s 1967 musique concrète EP. This studio-oriented team of multi-instrumentalists—who are all producers in their own right—digested Miles and Jas’s original basement demos and began improvising new works during sessions at Shahzad Ismaily’s new Figure 8 studio in Prospect Heights.

The process-based sessions were engineered and mixed by tUnE-yArDs mastermind Eli Crews and produced by Lily Wen. During these spring workshop days, the group built new songs from found objects such as a coins, pickups, a coffee maker, and a tape head stylus.

The group picked up and played whatever was lying around, found a groove together, and sometimes recorded only one take. Other times they looped a small caught moment and layered other elements on top of it. The field recorder and vocoder from a previous band session were put to good use, and the group stayed inspired thanks to donuts and Shane’s restaurant around the corner.

On November 4, Figure & Ground releases its sophomore album Explorations of Drums & Sax comprised of 14 original tracks by Les Yper Sound. The album pulls from the group’s eclectic influences and showcases the drums and sax surrounded by an array of acoustic and electronic sounds all rooted in rhythm and pop melodies.

“It’s all about finding that starting point,” says Jas, “and everything blossoms from there.”

As Miles puts it, “we would just start with an improvisational sound, do that for three minutes, build a song around it, and then maybe at the end of the whole thing, you can’t even hear that first thing anymore but it’s a part of everything else that happened around it. When you play a rhythm on a cool-sounding prepared piano, you don’t know what genre you’re in. Maybe it will become a Brazilian jam or maybe it’ll become a soulful groove—and all that happened in the studio. You’re letting the sound of something dictate and inspire you.”

Money Mark, who studied with the early electronic instrument pioneers, revealed some of his ‘recording hacks’ and found the musical in non-traditional objects. Miles recalls: “We went out to lunch and Money Mark was missing somewhere, and he comes back with two TV speakers and says: ‘We could just plug these into an amp and hit them with your fingers—one’s a little broken but maybe it could be the snare,’ and that’s is exactly what happened. We come back from lunch, plug them into a bass amp, and sure enough it’s perfect.” Listen & find out more here. Available from 04.11.2016

Arthur Russell – The Sleeping Bag Sessions
Thursday, January 7th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Arthur Russell – The Sleeping Bag Sessions

Image: 1544329 Back In Stock ! Whether it’s Hip Hop, it’s face pointed reverentially to the Old School, or House stealing Disco riffs by the truck load, people are increasingly intrigued by back-in-the-day. And common to both the aforementioned scenes and much more is one person, Arthur Russell, a man some regard as the best songwriter of the 20th century. In 1981 Arthur set up Sleeping Bag Records with Will Socolov. The first release was the album “24-24 Music” as Dinosaur L. If you’re wondering about the name it would appear Arthur would often use the names of extinct or near-extinct animals. On one production credit he’s “Killer Whale, whilst the logo for Sleeping Bag is a Koala bear! Will remembers how they came up with the name for their label. “We were joking about names, and James Brown was on with “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” and I was sleeping in a sleeping bag in my apartment and I kind of made a joke about that, and Arthur said that was a great idea for the name of the company!” The line up was pretty much the same as the Loose Joints sessions, (which boasted the Ingram Brothers rhythm section) and a similar stream-of-conscience approach was taken with the recording itself. Russell arranged the beats so there’d be a change every 24 bars (hence the title) and the band would have to
improvise the songs over the top. He also made sure he went into the studio when there was a full moon! The album is again very experimental, and makes occasional uneasy listening but the same magic is very much in evidence. Arthur would continue to be involved in production and mixing duties for the label, but parted company with Socolov in 1985. Arthur sadly died of AIDS in 1992 leaving behind many songs, as one obituary
put it, it was though he simply vanished into his music.

Various – Nonplace Soundtracks / Scenes 01-25
Friday, December 19th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Nonplace Soundtracks / Scenes 01-25

“One simply must find a tool fathom for one’s self this unique dimension and not to fail by missing the fluctuation and limitless elegance of this album. Whoever carries the robots to bed, will have to find his own way in the galaxy. This is music not from our world.” – Tonight
“How can clear and transparent music which pulses so softly and organically at the same time create such a dense and gripping atmosphere? Because every detail is correct, the pieces are worked with such precision, and the sound layers matched together so finely. What seems to be played so lightly and comes across almost dance-like develops an irresistible power of attraction.” – Stadt Revue Köln

The Green Man (TGM) & Peter Bouncer – Word, Sound, Power
Thursday, July 11th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Green Man (TGM) & Peter Bouncer – Word, Sound, Power

Image: 1580512 IS IT BALEARIC return with an absolutely superb EP from new signings Saint Petersburg Disco Spin Club.

SPDSC are a collective of live musicians and DJ’s from Russia. This is their debut release for IIB, but a handful of tracks on labels like Glenview & Teardrop have made serious waves – skillfully combining live Disco musicianship with the DJ sensibilities which shape their sound. From club friendly and hooky dancefloor tracks to blissfully executed downtempo jams
All pulled off with a loose but pin sharp production style that really makes them stand out.

‘I Never Leave You’ leads on the A Side, a steadily assembled sunset workout, with brass elements defining the groove.

‘Marwencol’ manages to deftly pull off a Balearic Wu-Tang move, whil e’Love Spin’ is a beautifully lolloping beach bar jam, which comes complete with a very dubbed-out dub version too

Top drawer music from an ever dependable label. Available from 14.06.2013

If punk rock kicked in the front doors of the mid 1970s music scene, then Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry must have seeped in through its walls and floors. By the time Perry established himself at the Black Ark there was probably no one quite like him working in popular music. Anarchic, spiritual but with a healthily […]

producer, Budamunk.
“I started listening to Hip Hop in the 90’s. My interest grew slowly
until it became a collection of records, CDs and taped VHS. This
then evolved into experiments, sampling and chopping WAVs on free
versions of WaveLab. In 2003 this became an MPC 2000XL. I was
living in Los Angeles at the time so I had started going to shows
and hanging out with people who shared similar interests. We all
began to gather and learn together. Records became beats which
became freestyle sessions, songs, laughter and much coughing.
After several years I returned to Tokyo and it’s been 10 years since
I have been back.
I still make beats the same way. Going off of feeling I would get when
I hear a record. The selection of sounds has changed slightly in
accordance with my current environment. Still mostly sample-based
but adding new and old tools have become part of my process. Just
continuing to create music my body and spirit needs to feel good.”

Los Camaroes – Resurrection Los
Saturday, September 2nd, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Los Camaroes – Resurrection Los

Image: 1611757 — The electrifying final album from Cameroon’s legendary Los Camaroes, available on LP for the first time since 1979.
— Recorded live to two track at the Mango Bar in Yaoundé, Resurrection Los was the last collaboration between bandleader Jean Gabari and groundbreaking guitarist Messi Martin.
— Deluxe LP reissue features notes on the history of the band by original keyboardist Mbambo “Johnny Cosmos” Simon, plus all new interviews with producer Nicolas Mongué and engineer Emmanuel Guyssot.

Cameroon, 1978: it’s like any good western movie. A man drifts through the plains at the furthest edge of the country in search of two former gunslingers, hoping to coax them out of retirement for one last showdown. Except this time, the weapons are guitars and the gunslingers are Jean Gabari and Messi Martin – the calm sheriff and his hot-headed deputy – who had led the band Los Camaroes to superstardom at the beginning of the decade.

Los Camaroes emerged at the end of the 1960s from the town of Maroua in the northern, predominantly Islamic area of Cameroon. After changes in name, in lineup and in management, they worked their way south to the capital to make a name for themselves, in the span of only a few years they changed Cameroon’s music scene forever, leaving a trail of sold-out nightclubs and monster radio hits in their wake. Then, at the height of their popularity, they broke up.

The band had been led from the beginning by Jean Gabari, whose level-headedness and evenhandedness inspired the respect and devotion of his musicians. But it was Gabari’s alchemical collaborations with guitarist Messi Martin that drove the band to its greatest heights. Martin had developed an innovation that would earn him fame throughout Cameroon as the “king of Bikutsi”, as Johnny Cosmos explains:
“The primary instrument in Bikutsi is the balafon, and Messi came up with a trick that consisted of chewing small pieces of paper until they reached the right consistency and then stuck them between the strings of the guitar. This trick, which made a guitar sound like a balafon, catapulted him to stardom and turned him into the founder of Modern Bikutsi.” (Check the song “Bezimbi” to hear Messi Martin´s wizardry on a Bikutsi tune)

Martin’s extraordinary talents were matched by a character of great unpredictability. He had been lured away from the band before by the promise of success and, in 1975, when Los Camaroes were at the peak of their power, he left them once again. Gabari tried to keep the band going, but his own longstanding battles with ill health eventually forced him to return to his hometown. With Gabari and Martin gone, the rest of the musicians drifted away in search of other gigs. By 1978, Los Camaroes were no more than a rapidly fading memory.

But then came the resurrection.

From out of nowhere, a businessman named Atangana Joseph appeared in northern Cameroon. His goal: to track down the original members of Los Camaroes and get them back together for their one final shot at immortality. The musicians reconvened at the legendary Mango Bar in the capital city of Yaoundé, the very place where, years earlier, they had established their reputation as one of Cameroon’s most fearsome live bands.

Producer Nicolas Mongué and engineer Emmanuel Guyssot were called in from Douala to record what was being billed as a comeback album. There was talk of going into a studio, but Los Camaroes had always thrived on the energy of the nightclub scene, they decided instead to record it live to two-track in the Mango Bar.

The six tracks on the album were performed by a mixture of new recruits and veterans from the original Camaroes lineup – including Mpouli “Dodo” Emmanuel and Boloko Michel on Guitars, Eyango Claude on Organ, the percussion duo of Ndi Bellui and Enama Leon, and vocal contributions from Sala Bekono Joseph and Ngoebang Jean Marie – but the urgent rhythms and shimmering guitars sound like a band who simply picked up where they had left off. It seemed that everyone on the record was inspired by the exhuberant reunion between Martin and Gabari, the two magicians from which Los Camaroes had been born and born again

The album, Resurrection Los Vol. 1, was completed in only a few days. There would be no Volume 2. The music that emerged during the Mango Bar sessions was the culmination of a fifteen year musical bond between Gabari and Martin, and what was supposed to be a comeback album ended up being a last testament — Gabari would die only a few years later and Martin, without his foil, would never find the same level of musical success. Even at the time, these two titans of Cameroon’s music scene seemed to realise it would be the last time they would ever work together. The resurrection of Los Camaroes was short-lived … but it produced a masterpiece.

The Analog Africa Dance Edition reissue of Resurrection Los was remastered by Frank Merritt at the Carvery and comes with a wonderful poster housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve featuring the story of the band as told by original keyboardist Mbambo “Johnny Cosmos” Simon, as well as new interviews with the production team who supervised the now legendary Mango Bar sessions. This essential slab of Cameroon’s musical history, previously unreleased outside of Africa, is available on LP for the first time since 1979.

The James L’Estraunge Orchestra – Eventual Reality

Born in a remote log cabin deep in the Scottish
Highlands, Eventual Reality, the debut album from
The James L’Estraunge Orchestra melds jazz and
electronic music sensibilities with a huge helping of
heart and soul. In 2014 seasoned producer and
musician Ricky Reid and his partner retreated from
the city to embark upon a new life, in his own words
“away from the constant, incoherent noise of the
world”. As he set up his studio, the clean air and
spectacular surroundings began to provoke musical
inspiration like never before. Then, like a scene from
‘Field Of Dreams’, a series of talented musicians from
his former life visited the cabin for a series of late
night jamming and recording sessions, leaving behind
them hidden treasures to be discovered and lovingly
pieced together by Ricky over the following months.
With nostalgia so much a part of the album’s
creation, The James L’Estraunge Orchestra can’t help
but appear somewhat spectral, after all they are truly
the band that never was.
Making up one half of the Soul Renegades alongside
Craig Smith, as well as contributing keys and vocals
to both 6th Borough Project LPs, Ricky Reid was a
lynchpin of the Edinburgh scene for a little over two
decades before escaping to the wilderness. Releases
on Restless Soul, Local Talk, Rainy City Music among
others saw him truly hone his craft, but the
distractions of day to day urban living prevented him
from elevating his craft to the next level. Now with no
TV or wi-f and mostly trees to talk to, Ricky has been
able to freely explore and spread his wings, as he
puts it: “I’ve become a conduit for something
di?erent than I’ve ever experienced before.”
Roaming from dramatic, cinematic expanses to
intimate and fragile places, ‘Eventual Reality’ is the
audible journal of a musician making sense of things,
reconciling the past and present from a place of
tranquility. From the autobiographical reverie of ‘See
You Tonight’, which explores the loss of youth, to the
vibrant Melbourne street sounds that introduce
powerful and empowering frst single ‘Closer’, the
album shimmers with a palpable sense of life
throughout. “My process is completely based on
inspiration in the moment. Sometimes the inspiration
for a track comes in the middle of the night, like ‘The
Call’, which was written after a local car accident
ended in tragedy for a young girl visiting the area.
She was trapped underwater after driving o? the
road, which shocked the village and provoked this
emotive, free form track.” It’s just as easy to imagine
a poignant story for each piece of music contained in
‘Eventual Reality’ as it is to place yourself in that
lonely cabin, comfortably cocooned in warm and
deeply touching sounds.
