Motor City Drum Ensemble – DJ-Kicks
Saturday, August 5th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Motor City Drum Ensemble – DJ-Kicks

Image: 1564643 Motor City Drum Ensemble’s DJ Kicks mix is the latest installation into the outstanding discography of Danilo Plessow, and is not to be missed. The addition of a selection of MCDE exclusive tracks, and the majority of tracks being rare pieces of music from Danilo’s personal collection make this a mix of not only exceptional mixing capability.

Danilo was always incredibly young with things. He started producing at the age of eleven—“way too early” as he jokes—having his first release out just five years later: Inverse Cinematics’ “Slow Swing”, released on Pulver Records in 2002, and ended up finding its way into Ricardo Villalobos’ record bag as well as onto one of the first Fabric mix CDs. An album under the same name and a string of EPs followed. Dailo’s latest releases, the Motor City Drum Ensemble’s Raw Cuts series in 2010, had the house music world responding strongly to the charmingly fresh and dirty sounding tracks, all mixed down in spontaneous two-hour sessions. Danilo has also released on top labels ranging from 20:20 Vision to Rush Hour as well as his own MCDE and Four Roses imprints, produced for Ben Westbeech and Rainer Trüby and never ceased to amaze with his challenging remix work for artists like Caribou, Jazzanova, DJ Sprinkles and Zero 7.

His understanding of how the parts of a track can work has never been more apparent than on his DJ-Kicks mix. In 10 years, playing 80+ gigs a year, including such temples as Berghain, Fabric London, Rex and MOS, he’s absorbed dance history through hard and disciplined work behind the decks. Look at the opening selections of his DJ-Kicks mix to get a glimpse of his amazing ability to fuse totally disparate sound aesthetics into a coherent whole.

With the next months holding an extensive tour schedule for Danilo, dancers around the world will be able to experience his gift as a selector first hand. That is, before he gets back into the studio to start working on his first album as Motor City Drum Ensemble as well as a live act. All this will prove, just as his DJ-Kicks is doing now, that there is no such thing as stagnation in the ever-evolving cosmos of Danilo Plessow!

Ben & Sadar – The Red, White & Blue’s
Saturday, June 17th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ben & Sadar – The Red, White & Blue’s

Image: 1610574 Legendary DJ and collector Sadar Bahar & Dutch synth obsessive Ben Spaander’s present their new collaborative EP on BBE!

Tracklist:
A1 Electronic Frequencies
A2 Fast Trumpet
B1 Binaries In Love
B2 East River Throwdown

Hugely respected both as a DJ and authority on rare disco, funk and his own brand of ‘Soul In The Hole’, Chicago’s Sadar Bahar joins forces with Dutch synth-obsessive Ben Spaander for a very special 12” release, “The Red, White & Blue’s”. A regular fxture at the world’s most discerning parties including Southport, Soundwave and Helsinki’s Flow Festival, Sadar Bahar frst joined forces with BBE in 2012, releasing acclaimed (and highly sought after) compilation album ‘Soul In The Hole’. Better known as Cosmic Force, electro veteran Ben Spaander has amassed an enviable array of synths in his Utrecht studio, using them to devastating efect in his productions and live shows. Starting out working only with Ben’s synth collection and Sadar’s supreme ear for the groove, the pair soon enlisted help from some talented sax, guitar and keyboard players to give their new project a delightfully organic, live sound. Following hot on the heels of their debut release (‘We Are Righteous People’ on Rush Hour), ‘The Red White & Blue’s’ comprises four heavy grooving dance-foor cuts of varying shades.
‘Electronic Frequencies’ sounds like an early Chicago House track, with a hypnotic synth bassline and insistent kick drum punctuated by sensual spoken word vocals and jazzy guitar licks. ‘Fast Trumpet’ lives up to it’s title with a frenetic disco rhythm and looping brass samples giving way to an ultra-funky wah-wah guitar jam. ‘Binaries In Love’ is a disco/funk workout of epic proportions, the dizzying interplay between live sax and guitar giving a classic feel to the rock-solid groove. Finally ‘East River Throwdown’ gives a nod to b-boys and bgirls across the world, touching on one of the most iconic breaks of all time while adding a earscandalous layer of smooth jazz-funk. An exciting partnership from two artists brought together simply through a love of music, the energetic, joyful nature of these tracks lends them a wide and instant appeal. Coming soon to a dancefoor near you. Expect smiling faces.

Edna Wright – Oops! Here I Go Again
Wednesday, October 26th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Edna Wright – Oops! Here I Go Again

Image: 1607172 Edna Wright’s idiosyncratic “Oops!” is one of the most sublime vocal refrains in soul music history. Anchoring its host album’s leadoff cut, it sets the tone for a uniquely satisfying modern soul LP. Indeed, whilst many of its ilk come laden with filler, Wright’s one solo record is an exercise in elegant restraint, a concise killer.

Originally released in 1977 on RCA, this rare and sought-after album followed the 1973 disbanding of Edna’s much-loved Honey Cone. Produced by her husband, legendary producer/songwriter Greg Perry, the album was somewhat of a risk, a deep soul album released during the period when disco was altering the landscape of popular music. And perhaps inevitably, despite the stellar production and spine-tingling vocals throughout, the album glided gracefully under the radar, spawning only one single and seeing no chart action.

That single – the magnificent title-track – soon became a notorious rare groove stepper in its own right. However, in the years since, it has become a crate diggers classic. Its fame was elevated among hip-hop heads when Prince Paul memorably looped the shimmering intro when crafting the melodic hook for De La Soul’s late-summer-stunner “Pass The Plugs”, a wistfully melancholic back-porch nostalgia trip. And, more recently, Leon Vynehall liberally lifted the same intro for his sepia-tinged “Midnight On Rainbow Road” to augment the excellent Rush Hour compilation Musik For Autobahns 2.

Yet this album is so much more than its most famous song. An assuredly lean masterpiece from start-to-finish, the album features a further six dynamite tracks of warm, smooth soul. As such, it’s an impossible task to choose certain tracks to highlight alongside the mighty title track. Throughout, Edna’s strikingly mature vocals are wonderful, proudly stepping out with a sophisticated groove reminiscent of Jean Carn or Gloria Scott, whilst Greg Perry’s gorgeous string-drenched backdrops add a rich depth. So much so, many of the other tracks have been sampled by producers with impeccable taste, from 9th Wonder to The Alchemist for songs featuring Nas and Talib Kweli.

Following her glowing role in the acclaimed documentary 20 Feet From Stardom, we pray this long overdue reissue will allow further light to shine on Edna. Officially licensed and beautifully remastered for vinyl by celebrated engineer Simon Francis, it has been pressed on audiophile 180g vinyl for the first time and features the original iconic artwork. Each copy includes a printed inner sleeve with a sumptuous black & white photo, full lyrics and heartfelt notes from Edna herself.

Various – Mr Bongo Record Club Vol.1
Saturday, October 8th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Mr Bongo Record Club Vol.1

Image: 1606835 First installment in the new ‘Mr Bongo Record Club’ compilation series – a selection of favourites, recent discoveries and sought after obscurities. Including cuts by Claudia, Cortex, Dave Pike Set, Fruko, Neno Exporta Som, Connie Laverne, Barbosa and more.

The original concept for ‘Mr Bongo Record Club’ was a radio show that allowed us to air our treasured record collections, recorded and broadcast once a month. We wanted to create an outlet free from any genre or BPM restrictions, not constrained by the need to beat-mix every record, a space where we could play latest finds alongside favourites. The only self-imposed rule being that it had to be played from vinyl. We have always DJ’d across-the-board, but playing in an eclectic way hasn’t always been easy. Recently DJ’s such as MCDE, Floating Points, Nick The Record, Leon Vynehall, Four Tet, Jeremy Underground, Antal (Rush Hour), Sassy J and Young Marco – to name a few – have opened things up with very diverse sets to younger audiences, Brazilian samba-rock, next to modern soul, highlife, disco, boogie, jazz, house, techno and beyond. We’re seeing a rare groove like sensibility. A shift towards the attitude of legendary club nights hosted by the likes of Mr Scruff and Gilles Peterson, where you could hear house, hip hop, Turkish funk, boogie, jazz, dub and Latin back to back. At the same time it isn’t a nostalgic or retro movement, people have a progressive attitude and a thirst for new-old music. It is a vibrant and exciting time – we are proud to be a part of it.

Pomrad – Knights (2LP+MP3)
Friday, April 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Pomrad – Knights (2LP+MP3)

Image: 1603658 Following up on his critically acclaimed „This Day“ EP, Pomrad (BE) debuts his full length with On And On Records (FRA) & Jakarta Records (GER) worldwide this summer.

Pomrad a.k.a. Adriaan Van de Velde has lots of Funk in his colorful trickster bag. Just check out the title track „Knights“ of his album: its beats chug like the wheels of a locomotive and electrifying synth solos guarantee the best brain freeze you’ve ever felt. He could be your favorites producer, favorite producer with Lefto & Mr. Carmack among his fans.
His debut album “Knights”, a collection of razor sharp keyboard licks, phat electro grooves and thick funk, following up on his EP release, which received radio support from MistaJam (BBC Radio1), Alex Nut (Rinse FM) & Lefto (Studio Brussels).
British tastemaker Gilles Peterson included one of Pomrad’s tracks on one of the influential Brownswood Electric compilations. Future funk heroes Teeko & B.Bravo did the same for their second Tempo Dreams compilation.
Now, Knights exceeds these expectations and transcends the aforementioned comparisons, taking a leap into the unknown. Pomrad clearly has found his own voice. Because, yeah, there’s postmodern retrofunk behind ‘City lights’ (a true gem!) and ‘Rush Hour’ & also, you’ll find a couple of talented soul singers hiding inside Pomrad’s cotton candy fantasies. Like Belgium’s blue eyed soulstress Selah Sue or Sylvie Kreusch of indie darlings Soldier’s Heart.
You want some cosmic funk, Herbie Hancock style? You got it. Need some of that Hudson Mohawke-ish beat madness? Or the kind of talkbox vibes that Zapp was known for in the eighties? The Pomrad experience includes them all.
Just having finished his own Boiler Room Set in Brussels, Pomrad will be playing live Festivals all over Europe this summer including but not limited to Dour Festival (BE, July).

Available from 18.09.2015

Hunee – Hunch Music
Friday, May 15th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Hunee – Hunch Music

Image: 1597154 Hunee presents his debut album “Hunch Music” this Spring. “Hunch Music” is the striking assembly of the artist’s versatile inspirations and productional talent. It is a rich musical journey that latches onto you and doesn’t let go easily.
Hun Choi, better known as Hunee, is a Korean Berliner who moved to Amsterdam over a year ago. In Berlin he used to work in a record store where he could extend his unquenchable enthusiasm for music. The connection with Rush Hour was a natural continuation of his musical path.

Firstly the DJ emerged, secondly the producer. As a DJ, Hunee manifested himself as a fine connoisseur of classic and contemporary music. Always smiling, he is determined to share every fine record he finds with the world. Over the past few years, Hunee the producer has put out some highly acclaimed EPs, but only a handful. The producer went quiet for a moment, but “Hunch Music” proves Hunee’s unstoppable character.

“Hunch Music” is rather special: it is a cinematic journey from the beginning to the end, with scenes we haven’t encountered before. It starts with “Woods” as the perfect introduction – a moody, mystic night haze that quickly changes into a warm and soothing whole. Following with “Crossroads”, the mystery transcends into something that moves us to the dance floor, and we’re not sure whether we want to keep moving or we just want to listen. “Hunch Music” has a nocturnal aura, an organic groove, and moments of glorious acid. It takes us up and throws us down, gently, while subjecting us to many cinematic and musical elements.

For an artist who is also an avid vinyl collector, it might be difficult to ensure that his numerous inspirations do not distract from his artistic signature. Hunee’s production work is as colorful as his character, displaying a broad spectrum of his inspirations that manifest themselves in a surprising and seductive artistic entity.

Gene Hunt – Gene Vs Gene EP Pt.1
Friday, April 24th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Gene Hunt – Gene Vs Gene EP Pt.1

Image: 1596795 Special release from Gene Hunt directed and selected by label boss I-Robots.

The two track vinyl EP features unreleased material produced in the early years of the famed Chicago artist’s career in the 80s and is dedicated to musical legend Frankie Knuckles who appears on the artwork in a rare picture with Gene Hunt from back in the day.

Gene has regularly produced and remixed for the label before now (including remixing Klein & M.B.O. ‘Last Call’ and on forthcoming I-Robots project ‘Dirty Talk’ ft. Donna McGhee) and has already assured his place in house history as a DJ headlining clubs like Warehouse and the Music Box as well as playing with the likes of Ron Hardy and Larry Heard.

As a producer he has been on top of his game for three decades and has released on legendary imprints such Rush Hour, Svek, Djax and many more, so is a true house icon.

His first cut here, ‘Drive Yourself Nuts’ is a classic bit of Chicago jack with prickly percussive patterns staying busy on top of punchy drums. Wonky bass, physical grooves and coarse claps all make this one a standout banger for the peak of the night.

On the flip of this special package, ‘Wildside D Dubb’ is a slow building, mania inducing tune with a lead synth line slithering about over dusty metallic drums. Eventually some acid bleeds into the mix and pans all around, adding a sense of scale to this heady, freaky, dance floor smasher. As ever, Opilec Music show others how it is done with this real and rare bit of true Chicago house history.

James Mason – The Dance Of Life
Thursday, April 23rd, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on James Mason – The Dance Of Life

Image: 1596764 Over three decades after “Rhythm Of Life”, James Mason rediscovered tapes with more recordings from the same late seventies period. “The Dance Of Life” (ft. Bernard Purdie on drums and Fonda Rae on backing vocals) and “Up Jump” are the first two tracks taken from the “Recollection Echo” album that Rush Hour are very proud to release on vinyl.
James Mason only made one album, that got acclaim years after it’s release. “Rhythm Of Life” became a soul-jazz cult classic, recorded in the around 1978/79 with musicians such as Narada Michael Walden and Gene Torres, and featuring Clarice Taylor’s beautiful, characteristic vocals. The multi-instrumentalist recorded far more tracks around the release of “Rhythm Of Life”, but his music became out of fashion because musical trends shifted. Another album never arrived, and the recordings ended up in a box. Today the release of James Mason’s second album is finally set, and will be an collection of these forgotten tracks.

“Following a sense of disbelief that I could have ever forgotten about this music, for me the first echo was recollection, a flood of memories. I had poured all of the passion I could muster into this music. I labored tirelessly and thoroughly loved what I was doing. I thought I was creating my future and that this was my big chance. My idealism is evident in the lyrics. The first echo carried with it a recollection of the process of making this music. The nights in the studio. The learning curve. The equipment I borrowed. The effort and the passion. The exhilaration of a young man’s immersion in an act of self actualization is difficult to put into words. I was making the music that I loved and was engaged in an act of ‘proving myself to the world’. As it turned out, the affirmation I was seeking would only arrive as an echo — as recognition and acceptance of “Rhythm of Life” built gradually over the decades”, James Mason states in the “Recollection Echo” album release.

“[…] I am proud of much of this collection, but this is not “Rhythm of Life”. Narada Michael Walden does not play on any of these tracks and I definitely would have liked to have had a lot more of Justo Almario. Most of it was created with zero budget and was intended to be redone with an appropriate budget and higher production values supported by a record deal. I wish you could hear these songs with the production treatment they deserve. For those of you that have enjoyed “Rhythm of Life” I sincerely believe that there are moments and motifs in this collection that can take you to those same inner spaces. Otherwise I would not have approved this release.”

“[…] When I listen to this music I experience a recollection of the passionate execution of the production process, a young man engaged in an act of self-actualization and the dissolution of my relationships with these musicians who were once my friends. But, I also experience a profound reaffirmation of my belief in myself as an artist. With the benefit of the hindsight of my current sensibilities, even in the midst of its various defects, I hear in this music what I always believed I had in me as an artist. Some of this shit’s really good! I hope you think so too…”

Alchemist returned home from a trip to Israel with a
bag of records he gathered from numerous small
stores and outdoor flea markets, Israeli Salad was
initially set to be released as an instrumental project
immediately but as beats from it were used on various
projects and albums, the end result wound up sitting in
a folder unfinished as a work in progress.
Last year, inspired by another trip to Israel, the
Alchemist decided it was finally time for the project to
see the light of day, hooking up with Unga of Haifa’s
Broken Fingaz crew for the cover art.
Israeli Salad comes in two variations: “Avocado”-
colored 2xLP and black 2xLP, both of which include a

The Alchemist – Israeli Salad (Colored Vinyl)
Friday, April 17th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Alchemist – Israeli Salad (Colored Vinyl)

Image: 1596074 Originally a batch of beats conceived in 2011 after the
Alchemist returned home from a trip to Israel with a
bag of records he gathered from numerous small
stores and outdoor flea markets, Israeli Salad was
initially set to be released as an instrumental project
immediately but as beats from it were used on various
projects and albums, the end result wound up sitting in
a folder unfinished as a work in progress.
Last year, inspired by another trip to Israel, the
Alchemist decided it was finally time for the project to
see the light of day, hooking up with Unga of Haifa’s
Broken Fingaz crew for the cover art.
Israeli Salad comes in two variations: “Avocado”-
colored 2xLP and black 2xLP, both of which include a
sticker sheet.

Friday, March 27th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Braille – Mute Swan

Image: 1596282 After releasing a string of driving, dancefloor-oriented singles on European labels Rush Hour and Hotflush, Brooklyn’s own Praveen Sharma aka Braille is keying up to release his debut LP, Mute Swan, on Friends of Friends this Spring.

After releasing a string of driving, dancefloor-oriented singles on European labels Rush Hour and Hotflush, Brooklyn’s own Praveen Sharma aka Braille is keying up to release his debut LP, Mute Swan, on Friends of Friends this Spring. With an ear for sentimental melodies and an unprecedented step into the vocal arena, Braille’s first full-length is rife with narrative appeal and rich songwriting, collapsing dozens of genre signifiers into a cauldron of pathos.
Sharma’s own vocal experiments are aided by Jessie Boykins III on “I Assume” and Angelica Bess on “Ports” and “Better Than Nothing”, as well as additional production from Throwing Snow and Seafloor, a symphony of voices feeding into the cohesive vision he has established, one as much influenced by internal struggle as it is by his current environ in Brooklyn. The Seafloor-assisted “The Cat’s Gone Nuts” epitomizes the aforementioned spirit, drawing on classic soul as well as hip hop, R&B and UK garage. Cerebrally affecting, Braille’s compositions take the listener on a walk through the artist’s past and present, a collage of emotions ranging from melancholic joy to the deepest of sorrows. All in all, it’s a pleasure to bring Braille into the Friends of Friends family, a fit that looks just as good on paper as it is in reality!
Key Points:
Debut solo LP from Braille who also records music as 1/2 of wildly successful Sepalcure duo (with Machinedrum)
‘Everyone’s Crazy’ EP supported by Mixmag, Resident Advisor, Exclaim, FACT Mag, Fader, XLR8R, Hypetrak and more
Radio support from George Fitzgerald (BBC), Sohn (BBC), Rob Da Bank (BBC), Plastician (Rinse) and more
Forthcoming guest mixes for i-D Magazine and Solid Steel Radio

Press Quotes:
“A full-length whose vitality may well spill into the lifeblood of whatever’s two generations on.” – Derek Miller, Resident Advisor on Sepalcure
“Fresh, swinging and juicy is how Braille likes his tunes.” – Mixmag on “Small Downs” (Everyone’s Crazy EP)
“The Brooklyn resident returns with his latest slate of lush, bass-heavy beats.” – FACT Mag on Everyone’s Crazy EP
“That Sepalcure is so balanced and organized can be attributed to the experience and seeming calm of its principals, that it sounds so lively and inviting is the greater achievement.” – Pitchfork on Sepalcure Available from 01.05.2015

Sumy – Trying To Survice
Wednesday, January 21st, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sumy – Trying To Survice

Image: 1594873 Limited to 500 copies! Repress of this Surinamese cult funk album!
With an estimated 500.000 inhabitants, Surinam has always had a lively music scene. Although the country is little known internationally, it has a very strong influence on the Netherlands, where many Surinamese people live. Music from Surinam is mainly known for its kaseko (which evolved out of the traditional kawina music) and soul music, but the Surinamese have also been active in other genres such as pop, funk & jazz.

Between 1976 and 1983, Surinam had a lively soul scene, with the output varying from eccentric soul tracks to more uptempo disco and boogie cross-overs. Nowadays, these tracks are becoming increasingly rare and hard to find. Kindred Spirits’ compilation “Surinam! Boogie & Disco Funk From The Surinamese Dancefloor ’76 – ‘83” gave a proper introduction to these hidden gems and included the tune “Soul With Milk”, from Sumy’s “Tryin To Survive” LP.

Rush Hour now continues its uncovering mission by making this 80s boogie and disco-funk album available again to a wider audience. “Tryin To Survive” is truly one of a kind… Expect a-typical pounding rhythms, striking guitars, and stabbing keyboards and synths.

After “Trying To Survive”, the digging efforts continue… More Surinamese funk tracks will hit the surface, as we dig deeper in the vaults. Another “Surinam!” compilation is currently in the making, and will be released somewhere in 2015… Available from 06.02.2015

Breach & Cinnaman – Liberty / Avocado

Image: 1592966 Breach and Cinnaman are next up to release on Breach, aka Ben Westbeech’s own label Naked Naked. The two track EP NKD010 is a fluent exercise in dance floor house music from two producers well versed in the club scene.

Cinnaman the moniker of Amsterdam’s Yuri Boselie, part of the infamous Rush Hour Record store crew and a resident at Trouw nightclub is known for his eclectic sets, his varied musical past is translated in his productions and it is fair to say that Cinnaman is one of the most exciting producers coming out of Holland at the moment. Breach, label owner and producer has released records from the likes of Dark Sky, Midland, Dusky and Lorca amongst his own acclaimed work. This EP continues to build on Naked Naked’s stellar reputation. The first track is a skipping vocal house track that retains a solid and weighty bass line. The second track is a textured and slightly moodier exploration into house music that builds in complexity and depth. NKD010 certainly meets expectations and the collaboration is a master class in quality club music production.

Population One – Theater Of A Confused Mind

Image: 1593168 Deadly Population One album from Terrence Dixon on Rush Hour…*Future Classic Alert* TIP!
Under the Population One codename, Detroit citizen,Terrence Dixon, has realised some of his most vivid, esoteric portals to the Motor City mindset. ‘Theater Of A Confused Mind’ is Dixon’s 2nd album in this mode and marks a timely return to Rush Hour twenty years after his debut album, ‘Unknown Black Shapes’, and the ‘Hippnotic Culture’ 2LP, whose ‘Rush Hour’ track inspired our company’s name.

In light of recent news that Terrence is set to retire from making music, the already incredible ‘Theater Of A Confused Mind’ is imparted with an ever more impending sense of gravity. It’s little short of Population One’s magnum opus, and should be treated with due respect.

This is really is a thing of beauty with artistic direction by the talented Mr Cosmo Knex (Stenz Quo, No ‘label’, reduction). Available from 23.01.2015

Various – Ten Years Of Phonica – Sampler Two
Thursday, April 10th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Ten Years Of Phonica – Sampler Two

Image: 1587855 Phonica unveil the second in a series of three 12″ samplers featuring a selection of tracks from their new compilation ‘Ten Years Of Phonica’.

Phonica favourite Lo Shea kicks off Sampler number 2 with the ominous ‘Home’, a bassline-heavy house cut that continues on from his streak of high quality and inventive 12″ releases on Seaghdha. Medlar and Red Rack’em join forces for the submerged ‘Morning Light’. It’s deep house in its truest form and here’s hoping they continue to collaborate, because on the basis of this, they’re onto something very special.

Moiré is another producer Phonica have been hugely impressed with, his highly original 12″s for Werk Discs and Rush Hour blew us away and his contribution ‘Solar Signs’ doesn’t disappoint. Cult producer STL rounds out the 12″ with ‘Freaky Fingers’. His distinctively twisted take on house and techno is in full effect on this one, whistles and all. As STL releases on labels other than Something or Smallville are a rarity, it’s yet another coup for Phonica.

Phonica Records was established in September 2003 and set up shop in Soho, London, adding to the high concentration of independent records stores that inhabited the area. Founders, Simon Rigg, Heidi Vanden Amstel and Tom Relleen joined The Vinyl Factory with the aim of creating an exciting outlet for innovative dance music, traversing all sub-genres and cultures. Over the past decade the emporium has developed into a well-respected destination for DJs and enthusiasts, and has subsequently become a bustling hive of conversation and inspiration as part of a wider community of music lovers.

While trends and movements in music have grown and faded over these years, Phonica has always remained in a state of evolution. It is this openness to change alongside a commitment to it’s original ethos and an enduring ardour for quality, cutting-edge sounds that has fuelled the shop’s staying power.

To celebrate reaching this milestone, Phonica Records have invited some of their favourite artists to produce a track for an eclectic yet cohesive compilation, which will hopefully go some way towards sonically unfolding the ‘Ten Years of Phonica.’

Moire – Rolx
Thursday, June 27th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Moire – Rolx

Image: 1580720 1. I Don’t Get It 2. Rolx 3. Real Special / After his debut 12inch on Actress’s Werkdisc label comes Moiré’s new 3-track 12″ on Rush Hour.
In February, ears were picked by the debut release from Moire, a mysterious producer hiding behind hypnotic visuals and a well-groomed cloak of anonymity. Now he’s ready to show his hand further with this second release, a three-track EP of what he proudly calls “London techno”.

You see, London means a lot to the man behind the Moire mask. While not a native Londoner, he is proud to call the city home. From the dazzling lights of the West End to the grey housing estates of East London, Moire has immersed himself in the city. You may spot him lurking in dimly lit basement spaces, documenting urban decay in Canning Town, admiring the city’s eclectic architecture or contemplating the ongoing gentrification of Brixton. That is, of course, if you can identify him.

“London,” he says matter-of-factly, “is so raw, yet so full of soul”. It’s a theme that he keeps returning to, and an aesthetic that sums up the City’s musical output. You can feel it in his new EP for Rush Hour, too, from the clattering, Tube-inspired rhythms and heart-aching chords of “Rolx” – a kind of West-East journey through subterranean London – to the intoxicating after-party pulse of “Don’t Get It”, where the city’s insomniacs gather to raise themselves to the rhythm one more time. Then there’s the tumbling, discordant chords, carefree melodies and intense rhythms of “Real Special”, a celebration of life on the city’s musical fringes.

This is Moire in a nutshell. There’s much more to the man – we’ve barely touched on his visual inspirations, and his love of the chaotic simplicity of moiré lines and patterns – but he’d rather leave it to the imagination. Not because of some high-minded desire to protect his anonymity at all costs (naturally, many are curious thanks to the runaway success of his “No Sleep” EP on Werkdiscs), or to simply keep us all guessing, but because it doesn’t matter. After all, it’s the music that matters. Available from 07.06.2013

William Kouam Djoko – Man Like Me
Monday, June 17th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on William Kouam Djoko – Man Like Me

Image: 1582001 The Leftroom imprint returns this June with ‘Man Like Me’, by William Kouam Djoko, backed with a remix from house veteran Matthew Herbert. Dutch producer William Kouam Djoko has been steadily building a highly praised reputation over the past few years, with original work and remixes for the likes of Rush Hour, OFF, Carwash and Area Remote.

The release kicks off with the original mix of title track, ‘Man Like Me’, seeing Djoko delve deep into contemporary deep house, employing bright chord progressions, simple yet effective drum programming and whispering vocal licks. The latter stages introduce jazzy melodies and high strings adding musicality to the record. Up next is Matthew Herbert’s rework of ‘Man Like Me’, Herbert puts his unique spin on the original number, with a profound depth instilled in the production through hooky low-end bass, swirling background tones and subtle automation touches. The record slowly blooms to a focal point where the groove is stripped back and dubbed out delays build on the atmosphere.

Entering the B-Side of the release we have ‘Mystic Niger’, showing a darker side to Djoko’s productions with acidic bass hits, hypnotic vocal lines and heady shuffling drums. William shows his musical capabilities throughout the track, with seemingly improvised, jazzy resonant synths easing in and out sporadically, while the boomy sub bass, carries the weight. Lastly, closing the release is ‘Africane Autumn’, a dusty, low-slung workout featuring off-kilter drums, warbling bass and sampled brass hits, giving off a hip-hop meets deephouse aesthetic, and showing a further uniqueness to Djoko’s style.

Image: 1580876 H A LL O H A L O is a Stockholm based Anglo Swedish unit formed when Jon Dasilva (Hacienda/Rush Hour/Ellum/Soma) met inventor and multi instrumentalist Jonas Nilsson in the first week in his new home, Stockholm.

Apparently Nilsson and Dasilva became best friends sharing their more nuttier studio obsessions… Here H A LL O H A L O serve up some killer Italo – flavoured Disco and Deep House with the doubleheader ‘Tuff Beat’ / ‘Yessir’. This is electronic music of the highest order…muscular and inventive and, dare I say, very future…in a Blade Runner kind of way! Which brings us neatly to the name, which, according to the pair, is a “pretend title for a Philip K Dick novel”. There’s no pretending with the music though… ace Deep House – incoming!
