Motor City Drum Ensemble – DJ-Kicks
Saturday, August 5th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Motor City Drum Ensemble – DJ-Kicks

Image: 1564643 Motor City Drum Ensemble’s DJ Kicks mix is the latest installation into the outstanding discography of Danilo Plessow, and is not to be missed. The addition of a selection of MCDE exclusive tracks, and the majority of tracks being rare pieces of music from Danilo’s personal collection make this a mix of not only exceptional mixing capability.

Danilo was always incredibly young with things. He started producing at the age of eleven—“way too early” as he jokes—having his first release out just five years later: Inverse Cinematics’ “Slow Swing”, released on Pulver Records in 2002, and ended up finding its way into Ricardo Villalobos’ record bag as well as onto one of the first Fabric mix CDs. An album under the same name and a string of EPs followed. Dailo’s latest releases, the Motor City Drum Ensemble’s Raw Cuts series in 2010, had the house music world responding strongly to the charmingly fresh and dirty sounding tracks, all mixed down in spontaneous two-hour sessions. Danilo has also released on top labels ranging from 20:20 Vision to Rush Hour as well as his own MCDE and Four Roses imprints, produced for Ben Westbeech and Rainer Trüby and never ceased to amaze with his challenging remix work for artists like Caribou, Jazzanova, DJ Sprinkles and Zero 7.

His understanding of how the parts of a track can work has never been more apparent than on his DJ-Kicks mix. In 10 years, playing 80+ gigs a year, including such temples as Berghain, Fabric London, Rex and MOS, he’s absorbed dance history through hard and disciplined work behind the decks. Look at the opening selections of his DJ-Kicks mix to get a glimpse of his amazing ability to fuse totally disparate sound aesthetics into a coherent whole.

With the next months holding an extensive tour schedule for Danilo, dancers around the world will be able to experience his gift as a selector first hand. That is, before he gets back into the studio to start working on his first album as Motor City Drum Ensemble as well as a live act. All this will prove, just as his DJ-Kicks is doing now, that there is no such thing as stagnation in the ever-evolving cosmos of Danilo Plessow!

Marcel Dettmann has mixed the latest edition of the highly respected DJ-Kicks compilation series.
Whilst Dettmann is well-known for his incendiary sets at his residency at Berghain, his DJ-Kicks mix is crafted for listening, and displays a more reflective side of the DJ and producer. The mix explores a wide array of selections from various subgenres, ranging from the a new vocal-led Strictly Rhythm release, to rapping on Clarence G’s 1991 release ‘Cause I Said It Right’, recently reissued by Clone Records.
Over the course of its 1hr 14 duration, Dettmann reveals multiple new original productions, most notably a collaboration with Levon Vincent, ‘Can You See It’. The pair have collaborated once in the past, releasing ‘Vengeance’ on Levon’s own Novel Sound label towards the end of 2015 to critical acclaim. ‘Can You See It’ sees the duo venture into darker territory, a stripped back, sub-bass laden affair, the quality of this production immediately stands out in the early stages of the mix.
Dettmann also collaborates with MDR affiliate Wincent Kunth on ’Possible Step’. In addition to five brand new original Dettmann remixes and edits, there’s an unreleased remix of Marcel’s ‘Let’s Do It’ from Ostgut Ton labelmate Rolando.
Designed to be enjoyed by both the critics and more casual listeners, this mix is the latest in a long series of lifetime achievements over the course of Dettmann’s career – and with so many new unreleased original Marcel Dettmann productions included, this is a landmark release for the producer.

Voodoocuts / SoulBrigada – Matasuna Records pres. Afreaka!
Thursday, June 2nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Voodoocuts / SoulBrigada – Matasuna Records pres. Afreaka!

Image: 1604425 Voodoocuts kicks off the A-Side with ‘Kelja’, a raw 70s afro-funk bomb from the Ivory Coast. The American-funk inspired tune features a funky bassline & killer organ vibe, mingled with a dirty, raw saxophone line and James Brown influenced vocals. Voodoocuts’ rework turns the track into a serious dancefloor banger! In ‘The Tortoise Loop’ Voodoocuts blends an infectious groove with pounding drum breaks and hypnotic vocals. A hot afro-latin joint not to be missed!

On the flip SoulBrigada takes things to a disco tip. ‘Hustleman’ is a stunning afrofunk & disco gem from West Africa. The second track ‘Madera’ is an afro-disco gem with a compelling Cape Verdean groove. SoulBrigada rearranged the tracks, added drums, samples and effects building a brigde between past and present – without ever losing its original organic vibe. Two essential tunes for your record bag!

The next episode of DJ Kicks comes from Jackmaster. The Numbers cofounder and charismatic Glaswegian delivers an honest journey, unearthing a serious passion for the obscure boundaries of house and techno. “The mix is influenced heavily by how I used to DJ at the first party I ever promoted, named Seismic, and another named Monox which was a straight up techno night where I was a resident from the age of 17. And although it wasn’t my plan, it turned into a kind of tribute to the cities that really formulated me as a DJ: Detroit, Chicago and Glasgow.”

Moodymann – DJ-Kicks
Friday, January 15th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Moodymann – DJ-Kicks

Image: 1601685 Doesn’t get bigger than this as the one and only Moodyman is on the decks for the first DJ-Kicks of the year.

Following a year that saw the 50th entry in the long-running series released to wide acclaim, DJ-Kicks returns in 2016 another landmark edition. Iconic Detroit DJ and producer Moodymann is at the helm for his first ever multi-artist DJ mix compilation. Born Kenny Dixon Jr., Moodymann is a one-of-a-kind electronic music icon, hailing from, and wholly synonymous with the Motor City. He is an outspoken, impossibly charismatic artist who has been putting a distinctive and soulful stamp on house and techno since the early 90s. Melting together jazz, funk, soul, blues and rock in captivating ways, he is responsible for some of electronic music’s most definitive tracks, EPs and LPs on labels like Planet E, Peacefrog and his own KDJ and Mahogani Music imprints. As able to
serve up the sweetest and most sensual sounds as he is the darkest and most depraved grooves, his own unique voice and stream of conscious musings infuse expertly sought-out samples for music that is decisively alive and authentic.
Across 75 minutes and 30 tracks, Moodymann does not disappoint: despite being a notorious vinyl fetishist, Dixon’s aim is to present music of quality, not to one-up fellow collectors. Rather than serving up ridiculously rare or hard-to-find records, he instead focuses on creating a libidinous, blues-drenched mood that takes in heart-breaking soul, gorgeous hip-hop and love-fuelled house. In addition to cuts from his own creative circle, the mix features 11 exclusive Moodymann edits. Like everything Kenny Dixon Jr. touches, DJ-Kicks showcases the taste, skill, and soul of a dance music original.

Clarence Reid – I Get My Kicks / Gotta Take It Home to Mother
Wednesday, May 20th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Clarence Reid – I Get My Kicks / Gotta Take It Home to Mother

Image: 1597336 Clarence Reid is probably better known as Blowfly. As Blowfly, he has recorded numerous albums, mostly of sex-based parodies of other songs, as well as original raps themed around sex. After moving to Miami, Florida, Reid started off writing songs for artists of the Henry Stone family including Betty Wright, Gwen McCrae, and KC & the Sunshine Band. He also recorded many songs of his own in the 60s and 70s including his 1969 hit record Nobody But You Babe. The 45rpm single which we choose for re-release is one of his rarest, and certainly one of his best too. You’d better be quick and get your hands on this limited repress – the other option is to spend hundreds of $$$ for an original copy, if you can find one.

Hot on the heels of the DJ mix of 2013 from John Talabot and following luminaries such as
Maya Jane Coles, Maceo Plex and Breach, next in line to mix it up for the esteemed !K7
DJ-Kicks series is Aus Music and Simple Records boss Will Saul.
Englishman Saul has had a busy 12 months – not only did 2013 see him release his debut
album as Close, an avant guard dance-pop project that called upon high profile collaboraa
tors like Scuba and Appleblim and landed on !K7, but so too did he make his debut in the
live arena at clubs like London’s influential fabric. Of course, in that time he has also continn
ued to steer both his labels down various underground house, bass and techno paths, nurr
turing new talent and old heads alike.
Says the man himself… “I wanted the mix to represent how I DJ in the sense that the majorr
ity of my sets are made up mainly of my own, or my label’s, unreleased or forthcoming
music. Hopefully this gives me something unique as DJ, not just as I play tracks that no one
else has, but also because they are artists and tracks that I love enough to want to sign, so
they really represent what I love about electronic music.
“With this in mind, I approached all my nearest and dearest for some tailor made exclusive
tracks. The result is hopefully a mix that rekindles the thing I loved about listening to mixes
20 years ago – that unknown aspect where each new track is a surprise. In a time when all
music/track IDs and myriad mixes are accessible at the click of a button, I hope this makes
for something a little more interesting.”
Will Saul’s DJ-Kicks represents a condensed version of one of his DJ sets – it touches on

Will Saul’s DJ-Kicks represents a condensed version of one of his DJ sets – it touches on
all aspects from warm-up to headline to closing sets and highlights the taste-making label
boss’s current musical fascinations in terms of the producers he is working with be they
new, unknown or more established.

Brandt Brauer Frick – DJ-Kicks
Thursday, February 27th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Brandt Brauer Frick – DJ-Kicks

Image: 1586406 There’s a common thread that runs through all of Brandt Brauer Frick’s music. It is this: interesting things happen at the interface of machine and hand-made music. The Berlin trio’s 2010 album, ‘You Make Me Real’, fused techno and classical. The 2011 follow-up, ‘Mr Machine’, saw them go the whole classical-meets-club hog with a ten-piece
ensemble playing dance music live. Then, earlier this year, came ‘Miami’, a darker, more song-based collection exploring the same man-machine ideas.
The Berlin trio’s instalment of the DJ-Kicks series does the same thing with a mix. Not for them the algorithmic rigidity of cutting and pasting tracks together on Ableton. They recorded the mix in one day, out of hours at Berlin’s legendary Watergate club, using only vinyl and dub plates. “We didn’t want to record it in our studio or at home, mainly
because we preferred an intense session with limited time,” explains Paul Frick. “That feels more like a unique situation and it enforces the tension and the necessity to do it right. Because we mixed it live there are mistakes and *aws, some rougher transitions in there. We are not super technical DJs. We like it when you hear those imprecisions because it’s human. It feels like someone is behind the mix, rather than a computer.”
After all the conceptualising, perhaps most importantly of all, the end result is that rare thing: a dance*oor mix full of emotion. Interesting things happen when humans and machines meet.

Breach – DJ-Kicks
Tuesday, December 3rd, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Breach – DJ-Kicks

Image: 1584052 It’s been a big year for Breach, a.k.a. Ben Westbeech. His track ‘Jack’ hasn’t just
blown up on dance*oors across the globe: it’s laid waste to them. In the process,
‘Jack’ got to Number 9 in the UK charts. Not bad considering Westbeech has always
seen Breach as an underground thing. “It’s been wonderful having a record that’s
commercially successful,” he says. “The thing is not to lose sight of why you started
making music in the *rst place. I wasn’t trying to get in the Top Ten. I just care about
making deep records that I get off on.”
Take Breach’s DJ Kicks mix, for example. If all you know about Breach is ‘Jack’, you’re
in for a surprise. Likewise, if you’re familiar with Westbeech as a vocalist you might
have to have a bit of a reappraisal. “This is the music that I love, the kind of thing that
I play when I DJ,” explains Westbeech. “I made ‘Jack’ and I play it, but there’s a lot
more to the music I love than that.”
The mix opens with the spooked atmospherics of ‘Prince Of The Immortal Woods’ by
Innercity, before shifting into the soft, rounded bassline and euphoric strings of
‘Triangle Vision’ by Wire People and the 4AM jacking house groove that is Beesmunt
Soundsystem’s ‘All Day’. ‘It Is What It Is’ by Fred P is an important point in the set. The
echoes of Detroit techno sum up where Westbeech’s head is at right now. Other
highlights include ‘Attention Seeker’ by Iron Galaxy and ‘How’s The Music’ by Winx,
better know as Josh Wink.
Westbeech’s exclusive track is ‘Beroving’, which means ‘deprivation’ in Dutch. It’s a
beautiful, evocative sound from the interface of house and techno, a world away from
‘Jack’, but every bit as good. “Since ‘Jack’s blown, I’ve been gigging so much, just on
the road all the time. My life is missing sleep. I’m deprived of making music and being
in the studio. I put this mix together and did the track in such a short space of time.
I’m deprived of time at the moment so it seemed like a *tting word.”

Maceo Plex – DJ-Kicks
Friday, May 17th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Maceo Plex – DJ-Kicks

Image: 1579679 Sometimes you have to look backwards to move forwards. In the case of Maceo Plex’s DJ Kicks mix, it’s case of looking back with a different perspective. While Maceo Plex’s mix is composed mainly of records that are up to 20 years old, it’s the tone of those records that is important.
Eric Estornel, to use Plex’s real name, has certainly come up with a forward-thing set that doesn’t sound like much else out there.

“The whole mix is very dark,” agrees Estornel. “But it’s very varied as well. It’s really boring to stay one style. If you’re a lover of music, you don’t love one style. I think it’s important to travel through different styles.” The end result is an education, a lesson in how electronic music for the dancefloor is done with intelligence.

Crucially, Estornel has re-edited nearly every track on the mix. “Most of the tracks are really old, so they needed freshening up,” he says. “A lot of them were missing percussion, or some other element I thought they could use.” I went through my own stuff and previous DJ Kicks mixes. Y’know, research. I think it is the most important mix series so I wanted to make sure it was music that I really loved and I want to hear in five or ten years time.
But isn’t it a bit of a contradiction, trying to bump electronic music out of a retro rut by looking to a different set of old records. Estornel reasons it thus: “A lot of the music on there is old, but basically has the sounds and the type of vibe that I think is missing these days. I went through a lot of new music. I didn’t want to select anything that everyone is playing at the moment and I definitely didn’t want to select anything that was already out on digital. The whole mix is comprised of vinyl only and is not going to be out on digital other than the DJ Kicks mix. To do that I had to go through a lot of new music and a lot of old music, and there wasn’t much new music that I really loved.
In time-honoured tradition, the mix contains a massive 10! exclusive tracks, the lead kicks track bing Galactic Cinema, a muscular and suitably off-world house chug. “I’m kind of known for a couple of big disco records and some really deep bassline house tracks, but that track much darker, but still pretty sexy and soulful. The whole thing is dark and futuristic.”

“This mix is kind of my legacy, or, at least, part of it,” says Estornel, by way of a parting thought. “In ten or twenty years I’m going to want to go back and listen to this mix and I hope it’s still fresh.”
Who knows. It sounds pretty timeless right now, though.
