Having co-compiled two albums, The Real Sound of Chicago and The Real Sound of Chicago and Beyond for BBE, DJ and producer Mark Grusane steps out of the shadows to present ‘The Real Sound Of Mark Grusane’. A highly personal selection of modern soul, disco and a little touch of boogie, these rare tracks have all been respectfully edited, chopped up or extended by Mark himself. Apart from the odd private vinyl pressing, or occasionally handing an edit over to close friends and DJs such as fellow BBE artist Sadar Bahar, Mark has never before made these tracks available (despite the throng of people waiting around to ask each time he fnishes a set).
Mark Grusane frst came to the attention of BBE Music back in 2010 when he was running specialist Chicago record shop Mr Peabody. He and his partner went on to create two of the label’s most sought-after soul compilations, thanks to the unmatched combination of rarity and quality expressed in the duo’s selections. Still living in Chicago, still buying and selling records, Mark has also built up a sizable discography of edits and original productions on various labels, now fnding his prodigious DJ skills in high demand across the globe. Each track on ‘The Real Sound Of Mark Grusane’ has a tale to tell, precious treasures unearthed by one of the hardest working and dedicated crate diggers in the game. From an edit he made at the age of 21 to a record he discovered last year whilst in London for a gig at The BBE Store, this collection is testament to a life spent completely immersed in music. Image: 1609705 Big Crown Records is proud to present the reissue of this 45 from The Demands.
Hailing from Dallas, Texas, The Demands were originally called The Fabulous Furys in college
and switched to The Demands in May of 1969 to play a string of gigs in South Carolina for the
summer. They cut the tunes for this single in 1973 with legendary North Texas engineer Phil
York, originally pressed on Clem Records, original copies of this Northern Soul burner change
hands for upwards of 600 bucks in good condition. The Demands had a moment of on screen
fame in ’73 appearing in the Blaxsploitation film “Fox Style” as the house band at an outdoor
fashion show. Band leader/founder Melvin Clemmons passed his bass duties to his brother
around ’79 so he could run his own nightclub and The Demands kept gigging until around ’89
when they disbanded.
Side A Say It Again is an up Northern Soul number equal parts hi energy and good vibes. A
sureshot for the soul parties, and a very welcome opportunity to put this obscure tune into collections.
Side B’s Let Me Be Myself is a smash of a ballad really showcasing a different side of the
groups writing and performing abilities. The sweet soul folks are in for a treat on this one, sure
to make it to all the lowrider enthusiasts mixes. Available from 05.05.2017

Nat Birchall – Cosmic Language
Friday, January 19th, 2018 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Nat Birchall – Cosmic Language

Image: 1617201 Nat Birchall charts new paths toward spiritual communion, connecting jazz with classical Indian influences guided by the wistful flow of the harmonium.

Cosmic Language sees the UK-based saxophonist, composer and arranger return to Jazzman Records with a cross-cultural approach: an exploration of the parallel musical paths of jazz and Indian ragas. Here he takes influence from spiritual jazz forebears such as Alice Coltrane and Yusef Lateef and introduces the Indian harmonium to his band, where it takes the place of the piano. Making new connections to realise his transcendental ambitions, it’s a logical next step in making music as spiritual cleanser.

The idea for the album was spawned from a one-off performance at a meditation centre, the Maharishi Golden Dome in West Lancashire. Seeking to bring a band set-up that was fitting to the quiet-minded setting, Birchall brought the harmonium with him. A small pump organ, it’s an instrument he’d been in possession of for many years but hadn’t previously used in his music. Building on the spiritual context of that show, and the associations of that instrument, it led naturally to the musical approach undertaken on the album.

Both the album and the show which preceded it were recorded with the same tight-knit group of players which have featured on Birchall’s previous albums. All members of the group are part of the same like minded circle of Manchester-oriented jazz musicians, sharing stages and acquaintances with the likes of Matthew Halsall (a longtime collaborator with Birchall) and GoGo Penguin.

Birchall has always channeled wide-ranging ideas into music that’s simple to understand, and this album is no exception. Album opener ‘Man From Varanasi’ is an ode to Bismillah Khan, one of Birchall’s heroes of Indian music who hailed from the northern Indian city named in the title. It also sees him taking cues from the Indian raga tradition which, as with most other traditional Indian music, is a foundation which underpinned Khan’s music.

Crucially, the ragas tap into the idea of of music as a means of spiritual release. As Birchall explains, “The whole act of making music is a spiritual experience. It’s during performance and when playing music that I look for a kind of truth. It’s with music where I find myself feel closest to attaining that ‘enlightened’ kind of feeling.” “On rare occasions I’ve actually felt as though I was listening to the music being played rather than being involved in making it, almost like an out-of-body experience.”

This natural feeling comes from Birchall’s attitude toward jazz music. He sees it as an essential part of day-to-day life: instead of brightly-lit, occasional entertainment in lugubrious concert halls, he considers it an everyday, vital source of inspiration. At a moment where jazz-influenced music is undergoing creative renewal and wider appreciation, it’s an important perspective that’s found resonance elsewhere. His experiences and the world around him are filtered through his music, and he looks to have his music – be it live or on record – absorbed in the same quotidian way. “To me, it’s an integral part of society, an everyday thing,” he says. “You should hear the music every day.”

Who Are You is a new collection of free form, free ?owing music from E Ruscha V. A wandering, wondrous search for identity rendered in brilliant musical shapes and forms, Who Are You resides in the transitional realm between calm and ecstasy. A meaningful moment along an artist’s transcendent path of self-discovery, and meaningful music to those who identify with a conscious universe.
Who Are You is the frst full-length release by Eddie Ruscha under his given name since donning the Secret Circuit guise in 2010 to administer an electronic antidote to the psychedelic / shoegaze dirge that dominated his formative music-making. Between Secret Circuit’s two 12” EPs and a colossal full length, Tactile Galactics, on Beats In Space in 2013 and now, Ruscha has remained wildly prolifc producing unfathomable fouron-the-?oor formulas for the best and brightest labels outside of Space.
The Secret Circuit hiatus suggests a return to self and an unmasked, untethered musical language, an approach Ruscha describes as “exploring melody that can mutate as different shades of beauty.” Rhythm plays a supporting role on Who Are You, an album with less concern over club constrictions and more contemplation of open, unbound spaces, areas in which Ruscha sees the music capturing “the feeling of a lost day.”
Who Are You further pares down the dub, tropicalia, and Afro / cosmic in?uences that have historically placed Secret Circuit at the dance music fringe, repurposing them as concerted instrumentals whose melodic themes are so lyrical they appear song-like, expressive without words. Brought to mind are similar instrumentalists such as Vini Reilly, Wally Badarou, Mark and Clive Ives of Woo, and contemporaries such as Gaussian Curve and Suzanne Kraft, a collaborator of Eddie’s.
A blend of electronic instruments with added emphasis on the ‘human touch’ of indigenous strings and guitar creates a parallel universe to WAY. On one track, the Yamaha CS-80 synthesizer adds an immersive, score-like quality to the music, reanimating the romantic sides of the album’s retrospective in?uences without vintage fetishization. On the other, ECM jazz chords velcro to percussive patterns in compositions that feel simultaneously open-ended and total. The exploratory quality of the tracks when intersected embraces a sense of wandering and the album’s intentional ‘lostness.’
Ruscha describes Who Are You as spanning states “from calm to ecstatic but mostly in-between these.” Though it’s an elliptical view, the description points toward the liminal atmospherics of the music, which dispose of the many hallmark genre traces that informed Secret Circuit’s galactic journeying. For Who Are You, Ruscha was content to wander more intimate environments, in search of an uncharted music rippling with humble discovery.
Companioned with the release of Who Are You and available exclusively for mail orders of the full-length will be a bonus two-tape box set compiling four volumes of Secret Circuit’s Cosmic Papers recordings, three of which were originally released in limited quantities by Cali Thornhil DeWitt’s label Teenage Teardrops in 2010, (the fourth volume will make its public debut as part of the set). The Cosmic Papers cassettes used Daniele Baldelli’s cosmic tapes as a jumping off point: Ruscha treated his own various tracks to experiments in pitch shifting and sequencing to create a larger, blended picture or mood.
E Ruscha V’s Who Are You is available March 2, 2018 from Beats In Space on vinyl, CD, and digital formats.

• Ruscha has previously released electronic music as Secret Circuit, co-founded the band 90s shoegaze band Medicine, and played in psychedelic rock band Maids of Gravity

Danny Watts – Black Boy Meets World
Wednesday, January 17th, 2018 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Danny Watts – Black Boy Meets World

Image: 1617466 This fall, Danny Watts will release his debut album Black Boy Meets World
on Jonwayne’s imprint Authors Recording Company. Beats were supplied
in full by Jonwayne, creating the environments that mesh to Danny Watts’
introspective lyricism and soulful cadences on the mic. The Houston based
rapper has created a body of work that details his life experiences with an
honest and uncompromising lens, jumping out of the Authors Recording
Company gates as the first release after the critically acclaimed Rap Album
Two. Before the release of Black Boy Meets World, Danny Watts is offering
up the album’s lead single “Young & Reckless” feat. Aye Mitch! today.
Danny Watts and Jonwayne recently captured Black Boy Meets World
in the span of only a week, recording the 11-track LP at the Los Angeles
recording facility Cosmic Zoo. Danny also wrote all of the lyrics to the album
in this same window, finishing up to three songs per day as the Cosmic
Zoo sessions occurred in an intense yet efficient form. Mixing and mastering
was completed by Low End Theory’s Daddy Kev and artwork was supplied
by Authors’ creative director Shane Sakanoi. With executive oversight and
production on every track supplied by Jonwayne, guest contributions and
features include Ray Wright of Warm Brew, DIBIA$E, Leaving Records’
Kiefer, Dr. Octagon collaborator Juan Alderete de la Pena, Zeroh, and many
others. The overall effect presents the ethos of hip-hop’s many forms, pulled
into the weight of classic sounding kicks, snares, hi-hats, basslines, keys,
synths, and horns.
The process that brought Danny Watts to this stage of his music career
defines his maturation process as a man and the roads that have split out
from this path. “This whole album is me telling my story from my perspective,”
explains Danny Watts. “Everyone goes through their own unique experiences
in life that forces them to really understand how the world operates. You either
allow yourself to succumb to the pressures of life or just find the strength to
make the best of your environment. Writing this album helped me realize
how some lessons in life are inescapable. I spent my whole life telling myself
that I would never end up like certain people. Thinking that I was better than
a lot of people because a part of me felt and thought differently from most of
my peers. Then I ended up finding myself in those same situations that I just
knew for sure that I wouldn’t end up in.”

Onra – Nobody Has To Know (2LP)
Monday, January 15th, 2018 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Onra – Nobody Has To Know (2LP)

Image: 1617306 Few artforms are as apt to describing the fervour and tumult of human emotions as music is. Songs transport us to real and imaginary places, living someone else’s experiences as our own, connecting with thoughts and feelings through melodies, rhythm and words. As a producer working primarily with the tools of traditional Hip-Hop – samplers, records, synthesizers – Onra has distinguished himself over the past decade as one of the best of his generation, capable of creating vivid music that sparks the mind of the listener and brings them along to uniquely detailed spaces, both real and imagined. On “Nobody Has To Know”, his fifth album for All City Records, the versatile French producer created music that reflects on the various aspects of a secret relationship pulling from R&B,New Jack Swing and Funk to soundtrack the passions of attraction. Stylistically “Nobody Has To Know” picks up from the Future Funk style Onra originated on his 2010’s “Long Distance” (and its 2012 companion EP “Deep In The Night” for Fool’s Gold). Where those two releases mined the early and mid parts of the 1980s for ideas and references, the new album digs into late ’80s and early ’90s jams for smoother and richer sounds. Bolstering the record are two talented multi-instrumentalists, New Zealand’s Lewis McCallum and Belgium’s Pomrad, who bring touches of virtuosity to Onra’s trademark smooth arrangements. The result is a record that, like its theme, oscillates between tender, torrid and tumultuous. Over its 13 tracks “Nobody Has To Know” details the ups and downs of a secret relationship, from the excitement of doing something forbidden to the aftermath of living out fantasies. On “Let Me Fantasize” a rolling bassline and sparkling melodies capture the excitement of what is possible, the mind wandering into the forbidden. “No Question” taps into New Jack Swing to act out desires that can’t be suppressed, exuberant solos echoing dangerous feelings. With its hard drums and smooth horn solos, and chorus of “Freak” takes you to that place where you can do things you only dreamed about. Balancing this intensity are more introspective moments. “Not Long Ago” rolls out gentle synth solos and nostalgic samples to reflect on past relationships and the very human desire to have what you had or can no longer reach. Rich textures and a languid rhythm underpin the reflective mood of “Nothing To Lose,” as you wonder what could go wrong – it’s a fine line after all. The fantasizing, excitement and danger of fatal attraction are all reflected through the prism of the music. With “Nobody Has To Know” Onra deftly evolves the style he first began to explore a decade ago with his unique touch, re-affirming a unique sound rooted in warmth and setting the mood for some late-night escapades.

Image: 1617096 Big Crown records is proud to present the first single from The Shacks debut album
Haze, out worldwide March 30th. Since the release of their self titled EP in 2016 The
Shacks have been collecting fans that are fast becoming as hypnotized as we’ve
been since first hearing Shannon’s ethereal voice on top of “Strange Boy”. Highlights
of the year have been opening tours for Chicano Batman, and Khruangbin, as well as
“This Strange Effect” becoming world famous via the Apple iPhone 8 ad campaign.
The A side, “Follow Me”, was one of the first songs recorded for Haze almost two
years ago. With “black mirror” esque lyrics over a hypnotic mid tempo groove, Follow
Me leaves you feeling joyful, calmed, and queasy, all at the same time.
The B side “Texas” is an another song from their upcoming album. Recorded in Max
Shrager’s home studio in Princeton and then finished with Leon Michels at the
Diamond Mine in Queens. Texas is a perfect representation of The Shacks signature
sound with Shannon’s voice balancing out the gritty yet smooth production.
