J Dilla – J Dilla’s Delights V.1 (BF RSD)

Image: 1615482 After releasing Motor City, The King of Beats Vol 1 & 2, the Ma Duke’s
Collection, and the Jay Dee aka King Dilla beat compilations all over the last
year or so, the world is graced with yet another stellar posthumous release,
a two volume beat tape from J Dilla, ‘Dilla’s Delights Vol. 1 and Vol. 2’,
It seems the powers that be are heeding the call for more joints from the
vault. And we’re not mad. Not even a little. Real hip hop fans can rejoice, in
a time of watered down trap rap and shiny suits. Will the wellspring ever run
dry? Are we soon to arrive at the end of this 11 year grace period with the
GOAT? Time will tell, but so long as the heat keeps coming, we’ll be quietly
sitting in the corner blessing the air and pouring one out for the late Dilla
Dawg.
And the best part about Dilla’s Delights Vol 1 & Vol. 2? Each one is on its
own limited color vinyl (Vol 1 on green and Vol 2 on purple), and a portion of
the proceeds will directly benefit each of Dilla’s two daughters, whose
profiles grace the album covers.

Cloud One – Don’t Let My Rainbow Pass Me By
Wednesday, July 12th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Cloud One – Don’t Let My Rainbow Pass Me By

Image: 1610873 RARE CUT FROM CLOUD ONE AVAILABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME AS A RE-ISSUE

A true Holy Grail from the Cloud One catalog, “Don’t Let My Rainbow Pass Me By” is the third of a string of titles
on Golden Flamingo produced by the P&P duo of Patrick Adams and Peter Brown and featuring vocals from
“Guardian Angel” singer Margot Williams. Similar to previous Cloud One’s productions, this record had all the
elements of a Patrick Adams classic, but with vocal arrangements that foreshadowed the work he would do with
Inner Life and Jocelyn Brown at Salsoul. Perhaps not so much of a concidence then that Margot Williams would
provide backing vocals on Inner Life’s Second and final album.
Even though it was originally released in 1981, “Don’t Let My Rainbow Pass Me By” is still championed by
high-profile deejays today. Over the years, it’s been notably sampled in Basement Jaxx’s Romeo and covered by
Todd Terje and Prins Thomas in “Reinbagan” as a Dub-Disco cut.
Available for the first time since it’s original release, our only piece of advise is to don’t let this classic pass you by.

RUN DMC – King Of Rock
Tuesday, February 21st, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on RUN DMC – King Of Rock

Image: 1608864 Run-DMC’s self-titled 1984 debut pushed the doors of pop music open, showing that hip-hop was not the fad that
haters had prophesized. As they proved decisively on Run-DMC, rap was a legit art form, fully capable of producing
long-players full of no-fast-forward cuts.
By 1985, any doubters were running on fumes, as the group’s King Of Rock blew the aforementioned pop doors off
their hinges. Emboldened by their success (including the first rap album to ever go Gold), energized by worldwide
touring and accolades, and given all the support they could want by a genius producer (Larry Smith), an open-minded
label (Profile) and a charismatic manager (Russell Simmons, who also lent a hand on production), they ruled the
charts and hinted at even greater things to come.
The album’s most fondly-remembered single set the album’s tone perfectly: “King Of Rock” was hard, full of charisma
and tag-team vocal finesse, and had enough guitars to bring the suburbs into the rap fold. The song’s video was
equally popular and powerful, and the pioneering MTV exposure drove the group into a new stratosphere.
But there was much more to King Of Rock than the title track, including more rock / rap hybrids – “Can You Rock It
Like This” and “You’re Blind” – as well as the additional singles “Jam-Master Jammin’” and “You Talk Too Much.”
(The latter, incidentally, charted as high as “King Of Rock” on both the Pop and R&B charts).
Throw in the forward-thinking reggae/rap collab “Roots, Rap, Reggae” (featuring the legendary Yellowman) and the
live-throwdown-simulation “Darryl and Joe (Krush-Groove 3)” and the album – which went on to pass Platinum status
– is a winner from A1 to B4.

Your Old Droog – PACKS
Thursday, February 16th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Your Old Droog – PACKS

Image: 1608803 After seemingly coming out of nowhere, Your Old set the internet aflame in 2014 with his self-titled debut EP, catching the attention of bloggers all over the web from New York Magazine’s Vulture to NahRight.com. Before long, conspiracy theories started and people began to posit that Droog was another older, legendary New York rapper in disguise. Profiled in The New Yorker, Droog (meaning“friend”in Russian) set the record straight about who he was:a twenty-something Ukrainian immigrant who fell in love with hip-hop when he arrived in South Brooklyn as a small child. The timbre of his voice resembled that of a hip-hop legend but Droog’s content had more to it than street dreams or observations from a project window. His music reflected his
own unique life experience as he referenced everything from sports, to crime, to Seinfeld and C-Span in his rhymes. He was an intelligent hoodlum with a stand-up comedian’s sense of humor—unafraid to be as self-deprecating as he was self-aggrandizing.
On his critically-acclaimed debut, theYour Old Droog LP, he vowed to “bring back storytelling” and now on his sophomore album, PACKS, Droog delivers on that promise. In addition to the raw rhyme displays on songs like the Alchemist-produced, “Winston Red” Droog flexes his narrative muscles both comically (“My Girl IsA Boy”) and dramatically (“G.K.A.C”) on this new album. For instance, the single “You Can Do It (Give Up)” is an ode to practicality over fantasy told in three vignettes.Co-produced by Edan, andY.O.D.himself “You Can Do It (Give Up)” is almost the bizarro version of Biz Markie’s “Vapors.” The reclusive Edan also produces and appears on the raucous posse cut “Help” with Ratking frontman Wiki. The three MC’s trade bars over an explosive beat that is as inspired psychedelic rock as it is hip-hop. Droog also shares mic duties with fellow rap iconoclasts Danny Brown (“Grandma Hips”) and Heems (“Bangladesh”) and, for good easure,
comedian Anthony Jeselnik lends his dark humor to skits between songs. Besides the return of Droog’s go-to production partner El RTNC, PACKS also featuresproductionfromplatinumproducersIDLabs(WizKhalifa,MacMiller) and 88 Keys (Watch The Throne, Action Bronson, Mos Def). The sum of it all is an album that stands out from the predictable offerings of mainstream rappers today. PACKS is a project for fans of hip-hop’s fundamentals and those who are interested in the progress of the artform. Finally, an album from a new artist that rap fans can truly believe in.

Taking in a tantalisingly broad selection of percussion-led
global sounds, new BBE compilation ‘The Language Of
Tambores’ is the brainchild of rising alt-jazz star
Gabriele Poso. A true multi-instrumentalist, Italian born
Gabriele found a particular affinity for percussion at a
young age, studying in Puerto Rico and Cuba, describing
this fascination as “a real reason to live”. His first solo
album ‘From The Genuine World’ was released on
Osunlade’s ‘Yoruba Records’ in 2008, leading to a longstanding musical relationship between the two artists
which has continued to blossom since. His latest artist
album ‘Invocation’ is entirely played, sung and produced
by Gabriele himself and his incredible live shows are
swiftly raising his international profile one performance at
a time.
An artist with a strong musical and spiritual vision,
Gabriele’s appreciation for the use of drumming as a
means to communicate led to the concept behind ‘The
Language Of Tambores’. This expertly curated
collection of music summons up the excitement Poso must
have felt when he began immersing himself in the study
of percussion. Ancestral, evocative and visceral, this
collection of tracks spans several genres and continents,
tied together with that ancient, visceral connection we all
share with the magical, unspoken language of the drum.
Key Selling Points:
– ‘The Languages Of Tambores’ features many of the world’s
finest percussionists, presenting essential cuts which were
previously unavailable on vinyl.
– This talented multi-instrumentalist has appeared on records
by DJ Jazzy Jeff, Louie Vega and Osunlade among many
others.
– His second solo album “Roots Of Soul” was awarded ‘Best
Jazz Independent Production’ in 2012.
– Now touring, Gabriele’s unique live sets showcase his
multi-instrumental and vocal talents perfectly, gaining a
plaudits and new fans across the globe. Available from 27.01.2017

Your Old Droog – Your Old Droog

Image: 1606868 Repress! In today’s hip-hop landscape true virtuosity on the mic is rare.
So rare that when even when it’s apparent it can be quite literally
unbelievable. Rapper Your Old Droog knows this first hand.
On June 2014 the 25-year-old Brooklyn native released his first official
project, the Your Old Droog EP, a 10-track project he cooked up in
about a month with producers El RTNC and DJ Skizz. The project
was good—really good. So good it got the attention of bloggers all
over the web from New York Magazine’s Vulture to NahRight. The
problem however, was that Droog seemingly came out of nowhere.
No pictures, no YouTube videos, no Instagram account, no Twitter—
no way for the entitled, deep-diving rap fan of 2014 to see what this
guy was all about. All they had to go on was the music. Befuddled
by Y.O.D.’s high skill level yet low profile, rap fans’ imaginations ran
wild. Before long the conspiracy theories started and people began
to posit that Droog was another older, legendary New York rapper
in disguise. People argued about it on Reddit and made YouTube
documentaries about him, while fans of his EP waited for the
mysterious MC to show himself.
Profiled in the New Yorker, Droog set the record straight about who
he was and followed up with the first video of him rapping at his DJ’s
makeshift Brooklyn studio, all before making his debut to a sold out
crowd in NYC in September of that year. Given a rave review in the
New York Times, the performance proved that though his identity
had been mistaken by some his talent was unmistakable and his
impact on hip-hop was undeniable.
Droog later extended the EP for a deluxe retail version including eight
new songs. The debut has already made New York Times music
critic Jon Caramanica’s 10 Best Albums of 2014 list and landed at
No. 13 on Rolling Stone’s 40 Best Rap Albums of 2014 list.

4. Loosey In The Store With

Overview: Immortal Light is the debut solo album by guitarist-singer-songwriter Buck Curran. Since 2005, Buck
has recorded and performed as one half of the alt-folk duo Arborea. To date, Arborea has released five albums,
including 2013’s ESP-Disk’ release Fortress of the Sun, and produced two various- artist compilations (Leaves of
Life: a benefit for the World Food Program and We Are All One, In the Sun: a tribute to Robbie Basho). Buck has
also produced a second tribute to Robbie Basho, Basket Full of Dragons, for release on July 5, 2016 on Obsolete
Recordings.
Buck’s music has developed through a decade of playing with Arborea and the experience of playing Blues and
Folk throughout the 1990s. He also draws inspiration from the deep well of Folk and Rock of the 1960s (Robbie
Basho, Jimi Hendrix, Tim Buckley), American Blues and Folk music of the 1930s, British Folk and Psychedelic
Folk/Rock of the ’60s and early ’70s (Peter Green, Sandy Denny, Pentangle, Davey Graham, Nick Drake, Led
Zeppelin, Martin Simpson), Indian Classical music (Pandit Nikhil Banerjee), and Jazz of the ’50s and ’60s (Ornette
Coleman and John Coltrane).
Press: Bob Boilen, the host of NPR’s All Songs Considered, listed Arborea among his favorite concerts and
recommended live acts in 2012, which led to the invitation to perform a Tiny Desk Concert at NPR’s
headquarters. Arborea’s fourth album, Red Planet, was released in 2011 and received critical praise making:
David Fricke’s Rolling Stone ‘Best Under-the-Radar Albums of 2011’, Guitar Player Magazine Editors ‘Top Pick’,
Uncut ‘Top 100 Albums of 2011′, etc. Fortress of the Sun was released in 2013 on ESP-Disk’ coinciding with the

Michael Mayer is one of the leading German tastemakers in dance music and his DJ sets have influenced a generation (or two) of musicians and fans.As an artist, Mayer remains tirelessly motivated to DJing, in the studio or behind his desk at KOMPAKT, the label he co-owns. His recording career spans four albums, 23 EP’s, nearly 170 remixes and the legendary DJ mixes for fabric and Immer. ‘&’ is his third full-length, a passionate and personal album that speaks as broadly as his DJ sets – embracing his genre-busting love for music, rhythm and atmosphere – and the dancefloor in front of him. ‘&’ is the rare manifest of an established artist who is willing to risk it all and challenge himself, and the world around him. 12 tracks, 12 single narratives coming from a group of very individual minds orchestrated by Michael Mayer – the DJ, artist, A&R but most importantly, obsessed music lover. Michael describes the process of curating and creating ‘&’ as a constant battle between his three alter egos but “the obsessed music lover has had the final say.” As diverse as they are, all the tracks that result from this long and winding road create a cohesive story and present the elasticity of Mayer’s musical galaxy. Michael gladly leaves it to the rest of the scene to discuss the different grey shapes of club culture. For him there is only one club culture – a playful and open-minded one that’s easy to comprehend after you hear ‚&’.

Jah9 – 9

Captain Supernova – Doors Of Perception

Image: 1602683 Captain Supernova has re-entered the atmosphere from out of
nowhere with a fantastic new album, titled Doors Of Perception.
An ‘American astronaut’ sent to interact with extraterrestrials using
synthesizers, but also a multi-instrumentalist with high profile
appearances at San Jose Jazz Festival, Rendezvous LA, and
Loftsess under his belt, Captain Supernova has developed a unique
and confident sound that draws upon equal portions of jazz, hip hop,
funk, and synthy trip hop to complete his vision. After the acclaim
and success of his self-released debut Visions of the Unknown –
which made its way on many ‘best of 2014’ lists – Captain Supernova
has adjusted his flight plan to orbit the Cold Busted label. Doors Of
Perception builds on his stunning musicality and deft stylistic fusions
to reveal seven tracks of smooth and uncompromisingly funky jazzinfluenced
music.
The secret weapons in the Captain’s arsenal are an amazing crew
of guest vocalists. Jackie Gage, who was heard on Visions of the
Unknown, contributes her soulful tones to “Only One”, with the lovely
music providing an ample showcase for the Bay Area singer. “Without
Gravity” is a smooth, jazzy wonder that dreamily incorporates the
voice of Notown Sound’s Angela Muhwezi … the result is a fine
sonic approximation of ‘floating.’ Globally active Los Angeles-based
vocalist Laura Mace waxes wistfully with “Leaving The Past Behind”,
capturing a feeling of psychedelic balladry when mixed with Captain
Supernova’s flowing music-field. Also from Los Angeles, Natasha
Agrama collaborates on two very different songs: the late night waltz
“Searching Forever” and the pensive but upbeat groover “Free Fall
(Of Your Soul)”. Despite the variety of vocal contributors, Doors Of
Perception has a cohesive, story-telling sequence, glued together by
Captain Supernova’s smart and melodic arrangements.
So, have a seat in the smoking lounge of Captain Supernova’s star
cruiser, grab a glass of galactic libation, and have a deep listen to
Doors Of Perception. You will be blissfully floating in no time at all.

Matthewdavid’s Mindflight is Heart Music. It’s a record of beauty that
has evolved from explorations into his deepest emotions, visions

profound connection with Michael Stearns’ Planetary Unfolding

Stearns speaks of Dreams, Resonance, Unity, and Ecstasy.
Matthew adds that this journey has been one of Healing, Discovery,

Run DMC – The Singles Collection (RSD)

Image: 1599997 RUN-DMC “THE SINGLES COLLECTION” 45 VINYL BOX

5 “Big-Hole” Singles On Black Vinyl With Picture Sleeves. 10 Songs Total, Spanning The Legendary Group’s ‘80s Heyday.

In a musical world where heated debates rage constantly, here is a statement that no one can dispute – Run-DMC is one of the most important and influential groups in rap history. Forming in the early ‘80s and guided by Russell Simmons (who was, of course, Run’s brother), the three-man unit were lyrical and musical pioneers from their first, Larry Smith-helmed foray: 1983’s “It’s Like That,” with the world-shaking b-side, “Sucker M.C.’s.”
With a string of gold and platinum albums that started with Run-DMC in 1984 and ran through 1988’s Tougher Than Leather, the trio changed the course of music (and videos, and youth culture, and more) and ruled the genre outright, boasting sales numbers that were neck-and-neck with manufactured pop stars of the day. Part of their charm was their every-man appeal – they didn’t dress like rock stars, and they didn’t act like them either. They just made amazing music.
Get On Down, who celebrated 2014’s Black Friday Record Store Day with their reissue of Run-DMC’s “Christmas In Hollis,” follows it up for 2015 with the deluxe 45 RPM vinyl “Singles Collection” box, which celebrates the group’s glory days with a curated assortment of five smash singles that brought the group from New York to Tokyo, London to Sydney, and just about every corner of the Earth. With lovingly re-created 7-inch sleeves (taken from original 45s and 12-inches), the set is housed in a sturdy outer box with the group’s name proudly overlaid across a map of their hometown: Hollis, Queens.

K Rob And Rammelzee – Beat Bop (Record Case)
Thursday, November 12th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on K Rob And Rammelzee – Beat Bop (Record Case)

Image: 1600838 This Beat Bop Record Box includes officially
licensed artwork from Jean-Michel Basquiat
on a premium record carrying case. Only
1,000 of the record carrying cases exist and
will never be produced again.

Holding up to 50 records, this ultra-sturdy LP-sized record case, with an interior tiled with
Basquiat’s famous crown logo, is a true and literal work of art, covered in classic images from the
original Tartown Records version of the 1983 classic hip-hop track “Beat Bop”.
The original vinyl issue of “Beat Bop” by Rammellzee and K-Rob – which is the inspiration for the
Box – has been heard by many, but held by few. Only a reputed 500 of the song’s initial run, on
Jean-Michel Basquiat’s one-off Tartown Records label, were made with jacket cover art by the
infinitely influential graphic artist (and moonlighting musician and producer). They remain one of
hip-hop’s “Holy Grail” items, selling north of $1,500 if you can even find one. The audio, which
clocked in at over 10 minutes, was issued – with no picture sleeve – on Profile Records soon after
the Tartown pressings, and went on to influence countless MCs, with its minimal, languishing funk
beat (produced by Basquiat) and Rammellzee’s and K-Rob’s next-level lyricism.
Jean-Michel Basquiat passed away in 1988 and Rammellzee left this Earth in 2010. With this
Record Box, Get On Down celebrates and remembers Basquiat’s important contributions to the
formative years of hip-hop, visually and on wax. And besides being a “trophy piece,” the Box is a
vision of utilitarianism, which will keep your most previous wax safe for years to come. Available from 04.12.2015

Bilal – In Another Life
Friday, August 28th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Bilal – In Another Life

Image: 1598366 Fresh off his high profile appearance on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly, Bilal is back with his new album In Another Life, produced in full by Adrian Younge.

Bilal is an artist who needs little introduction to fans of neo soul, and his ever-growing following must surely be among the most loyal and supportive in the scene. To know Bilal is
to love him, so ever since his new album was announced on npr.com with a taste of first single ‘Satellites’, expectation has been running at fever pitch.

More grounded and earthy than 2013’s ‘A Love Surreal’ (also on BBE), ‘In Another Life’ was made in collaboration with eclectic producer and composer Adrian Younge. Although Bilal’s soul and jazz chops are clearly evident here, there is also an underground indie undertone running through many of the tracks, complete with agonised vocal acrobatics worthy of Thom Yorke. In fact, if Prince & Radiohead had made an album together, well, it would probably make a lot less musical sense than this does. From opening track ‘Sirens’ the lyrical subject matter of the album provides a timely and human reflection on the confusion and paranoia of modern life, asking Marvin’s age-old question, ‘What’s Going On?’

Heavyweight guest appearances come in the form of Def Jam’s Big K.R.I.T., who provides a brilliant verse on the fun, 80’s boogie inspired ‘Pleasure Toy’. Man of the moment Kendrick Lamar spits lyrical fire on frenetic anthem ‘Money Over Love’, while the brilliant Kimbra turns up on languid, sensual soul/jazz gem ‘Holding It Back’. Dedicated by Bilal “to the victims of injustice all over the World”, ‘In Another Life’ is surely destined to become one of those rare and special records which actually make the world a better place for all those who experience it.

Special Ed – I Got It Made
Thursday, August 27th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Special Ed – I Got It Made

Image: 1599199 SIDE A: I GOT IT MADE / SIDE B: I GOT IT MADE (BUSINESSLIKE VERSION) / “I’m kinda young / But my tongue speaks maturity” /
Thus stated Special Ed, on his 1989 smash hit, “I Got It Made.” And he backed up that brag throughout his
trademark anthem, which featured laid-back brags that MCs a half-decade his senior couldn’t mess with.
The Brooklyn MC was only 16 when it was released, making him one of the youngest rappers – especially
at the time, before the 90s brought us Kris Kross and Lil Bow Wow – to ever have a hip-hop hit. The song
itself, which floated over a perfectly hooked up slice of Ripple’s “I Don’t Know What It Is, But It Sure Is
Funky,” was produced by Hitman Howie Tee, who also made waves in the late ‘80s with his cousin, Chubb
Rock.
When Ed and Howie combined, it was a match made in heaven, and the song exploded in New York
before taking over worldwide. Eventually becoming sample fodder on dozens of later songs – from Fat Joe
to Kendrick Lamar – the track still invokes heavy head-nods today from crowds of all ages.
Also included on this special 7-inch is the “Businesslike Version” of the song (also produced by Howie),
which also appeared on the original 12-inch. Featuring a minimal, synth-driven backdrop and a quicker
pace, it offers an excellent new way to experience Ed’s forward-thinking lyricism.
This unique, deluxe “big hole” 7-inch comes housed in a custom Profile 45 jacket. Available from 25.09.2015

Various – Sources: The Sam Records Anthology
Friday, July 31st, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Sources: The Sam Records Anthology

Image: 1598578 Sources is a brand new series which will examine the output of a number of extremely influential independent U.S. labels throughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. In an age where corporate anonymity reigns supreme and music is being treated like aural wallpaper, the Sources series will go back to a time when record labels really meant something via their A&R policies, their ground-breaking releases, their everyday modus-operandi and their general philosophies. What made these operations unique? How did they manage to compete with the major companies? How did they protect their artist rosters? What sort of people ran these operations and how did they manage to survive in the cut-throat music business?

The fourth package in the Sources series covers one of the most loved New York independent record labels ever, the iconic Sam Records. Formed by industry veteran Sam Weiss in 1975, the label launched with a the killer atmospheric funk anthem “Woman Of The Ghetto” by Doris Duke before heading into Disco territory with several hugely successful albums from John Davis & The Monster Orchestra before hitting big internationally with a brace of Disco smashes from Gary’s Gang including their most successful single “Keep On Dancing”. By the beginning of the 1980s Sam managed to deftly circumnavigate the Disco backlash and re-invent themselves as a bona-fide 80s Dance label immediately scoring with Rhyze’s “Just How Sweet Is Your Love”, Convertion’s “Let’s Do It”, Scandal’s “Just Let Me Dance”, K.I.D.’s “Don’t Stop” and Mike & Brenda Sutton’s “We’ll Make It” among others. This proved to be a fortuitous direction and by the end of 1982 Sam had scored high-profile successes with Vicky ‘D’’s “This Beat Is Mine”, Komiko’s “Feel Alright”, The Evasion’s “Wikka Wrap”, K.I.D.’s “Hupendi Muziki Wangu?! (You Don’t Like My Music)” and the sumptuous “Dreaming” by Greg Henderson. Sam’s impressive dance hit tally continued into 1983 with further successes like Steve Shelto’s pumping “Don’t Give Your Love Away” and Klassique’s “Somebody’s Loving You” before the label wound down for much of the next decade. Over the ensuing 30+ years Sam’s 70s and 80s releases have seldom been off DJs turntables whether via the Disco, Rare- Groove and Electro scenes or by the almost relentless re-edits that appear of Sam’s main output throughout this period. ‘Sources: The Sam Records Anthology’ continues the run of comprehensive anthologies of the most important labels in the evolution of Dance music.

Ghostface Killah – 12 Reasons To Die (Instrumentals)
Thursday, July 23rd, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ghostface Killah – 12 Reasons To Die (Instrumentals)

Image: 1598498 THE INSTRUMENTAL VERSION OF ADRIAN YOUNGE’S ACCLAIMED COLLABORATION WITH WU-TANG CLAN’S GHOSTFACE KILLAH, RE-ISSUED FOR THE FIRST TIME ON LINEAR LABS!

The sounds of classic 36 Chambers-era RZA meld with Portishead and the Italian film music of Ennio Morricone
on 12 Reasons To Die, the first ever collaboration between Ghostface Killah and Adrian Younge. A daring,
full-length Crime/Horror concept album, 12 Reasons’ executive producer and Ghostface’s longtime Wu-Tang
Clan collaborator The RZA, referred to the album as “groundbreaking” in the hip-hop genre.
Ghostface Killah’s prominence in hip hop has grown steadily over his 20-plus year career – including high-profile
appearances on Kanye West’s Cruel Summer, RZA’s The Man With the Iron Fists soundtrack and 36 Seasons,
his recent collaboration with The Revelations – 12 Reasons catches the gifted MC at the height of
his lyrical prowess.
Composer/producer/instrumentalist Adrian Younge represents the next generation of black music producers.
His aim is an organic re-appropriation of hip-hop circa the mid-90s. His previous releases, the Black Dynamite
soundtrack album (2009) Something About April (2011), and There Is Only Now, his collaboration with Souls Of
Mischief (2012), touched on psychedelia, blaxploitation, and the cinematic soul of the 1970s. 12 Reasons was
Adrian’s first project in which he’s immersed himself in the world of hip-hop.

Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers – African Party
Friday, July 17th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers – African Party

Image: 1597394 Ginger Johnson’s life is one of the greatest untold stories of African music in Europe. Born George Folunsho Johnson in Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria in 1916. Aged just 18 he joined the Nigerian Navy, and made his first visit to Britain. After World War II Ginger decided to make London his home, working with many artists including British saxophone legend Ronnie Scott who first really utilised Gingers amazing technique to full effect, featuring him in not only his live concerts, but also several recordings for the Esquire jazz label in the 1940’s & 50’s.

In the 60’s Ginger was mentor & guru to a young Fela Kuti. Gingers London home became a vibrant hub of African music activity for Fela and an entire host of musicians who would gather there to exchange news, talk, eat and jam for hours on end. To Fela, and all who gravitated towards Ginger’s home, he was simply known and addressed as ‘Father’.

Aside from his music, Ginger was something of a social activist. Not only was he a musical educator, and instrumental in the beginnings of The Notting Hill Carnival, he also opened his own venue Club Iroko in Haverstock Hill, North London, which was a creative hub for groups like Osibisa, and also a welcoming hang out for visiting legends like Sun Ra, George Clinton and Funkadelic, and British group Cymande (3 members of Cymande cut their teeth playing in Gingers group).

Ginger and his group performed at The Royal Variety Performance, his music featured in the James Bond film ‘Live & Let Die’ and Ginger himself appears on screen drumming in the Hammer Films cult classic ‘She’. As a session musician he played for a bewilderingly wide range of acts such as Georgie Fame, Osibisa, Madeleine Bell and Quincy Jones. Ginger & his group also collaborated with many early rock bands such as Hawkwind, Argent, Thunderclap Newman, Genesis and Little Free Rock.

Perhaps Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers most high profile live engagement was performing with The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park in 1969, as Ginger his troupe provided the percussive, high energy rhythmic bedrock to the infamous live version of Sympathy For The Devil.

Freestyle Records is incredibly proud to reissue the music of Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers. Its bedrock of African drums, hi life, and jazz was in fact the precursor to Afrobeat – and Gingers direct and vital influence upon Afrobeat, as guide & mentor to it’s undisputed champion Fela Kuti is just one part of a fascinating and underappreciated story that only now is being recognised for its significance.
