Image: 1608323 Night Visions is a collection of stories which dance alive over an infectious blend of Afro-Latin rhythms and contemporary dancefloor beats. Told by a variety of characters, drawn from the vibrant imagination of Chico Mann, these stories take place in an endless night, where we move through dimly lit clubs, jungle moonlight, pitch black desert plains, and the internal shadows of personal darkness. While the characters often stumble and search blindly in the dark, the persistent presence of a distant light provides an underlying direction and hopefulness to all the songs. Captain Planet’s production, informed by his regular crowd-moving DJ sets, keeps the album sounding effortlessly danceable & contemporary. Meanwhile, Chico’s vocals have an instant classic appeal, hinting at old Cuban rumba and vintage Afrobeat LP’s. The two are aided by guest vocals from regular collaborators Kendra Morris & Brit Manor, as well as some talented friends who contributed additional horns, guitar & marimba.

Night Visions highlights the creative symbiosis of two of the biggest names in contemporary alternative Latin sounds. The result is a truly unique album that speaks as much to listeners who don’t understand Spanish as it does to old abuelos. The feelings and rhythms that flow through these songs are universal, appealing to hearts and hips all around the world.

Chico Mann has created a musical time machine that simultaneously fuses the sounds of 1970s Afrobeat, 1980s Freestyle and Afro Cuban in a hybrid beast of culture and tone. Its the big ‘what if’ Freestyle, Afrobeat & Afro Cuban converged and hit the mainstream for an army of Chicos to pick up where Stevie B, TKA, George Lamond, Sa-Fire, Information Society, Noel, and Cult Jam, and Expose left off. Chico’s choruses of multi-layered vocals with funky guitar lines helps to cool off the heat created between the bass and rhythm… creating a unique conversation of color and value that pays homage to the past but raises the bar for the future.

Captain Planet is a world travelling DJ & music producer who blends global roots music styles with forward-thinking hip-hop, dancehall and electronic beats. After cutting his teeth in the competitive New York City club scene, he went on to host a popular radio show on WNYU Radio, and started the globally renowned music blog www.MixtapeRiot.com. He has released 3 full-length albums featuring his trademark “Gumbo Funk” sound on Bastard Jazz Recordings, and can be heard on the soundtracks to multiple popular TV shows such as “Orange Is The New Black”, “Entourage” and “CSI:NY” to name a few. In 2016, his song “Un Poquito Mas” featuring Chico Mann was featured in a major Honda ad campaign and passed a million plays on Spotify. The success of that song, in conjunction with Chico Mann relocating to Los Angeles, encouraged the two artists to focus on a full collaboration album together.

Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band – Planet Lam
Friday, September 23rd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band – Planet Lam

Image: 1606556 Inspiration for this, the second LP from The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band, is the musical experimentation that has happened at their seminal venue in Bangkok, Studio Lam, and how that has influenced their sound, whether it’s the alternative nights featuring individual band members (Paradise Bangkok Rhythm Section, Kammao & friends, Electric Piphat Band) or sets from other artists and DJs like Andrew Ashong, Miles Cleret, Hugo Mendez, Awesome Tapes From Africa, Rabih Beaini, Kirk Degiorgio, and Phuong Dan.

The fact that Studio Lam has become a musical focal point for the city of Bangkok, has inevitably had an impact on the band itself, and this is reflected in the presence of different vibes and styles of the LP.

The sound of ‘Planet Lam’ has been shaped by late night jamming gigs, home made ya-dong, run ins with the police, and the swapping of ideas with like-minded local musicians and artists.

Phantom Planet – The Guest
Thursday, August 11th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Phantom Planet – The Guest

Image: 1605788 Having Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake as your record producers is
roughly the equivalent of having musical life insurance. In addition to
the pair’s outstanding work together in the Latin Playboys, Froom has
produced Crowded House and Suzanne Vega, to name two, while
Blake has mixed or engineered seminal groups from the BoDeans to
the Bangles.
That said, the danger in hooking up with such a studio-savvy pair
is the sheer force of their dominance, and unless an artist has real
vision, the star of the show will inevitably be the ensuing sonics, not
the songs. While fledgling pop combo Phantom Planet write breezy,
accessible, jangly, upbeat songs that only occasionally speak to darker
themes (the mildly cynical “Turn Smile Shift Repeat” and wistful “One
Ray of Sunlight”), The Guest feels maddeningly measured, as if every
chiming guitar part were scripted and directed for maximum sheen. In
other words, it’s toothless. If a band can’t stretch in the presence of
Froom and Blake, when can they?

Elizabeth Parker/BBC Radiophonic Workshop – The Living Planet OST
Sunday, July 31st, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Elizabeth Parker/BBC Radiophonic Workshop – The Living Planet OST

Image: 1605521 Arctic Pearl Vinyl, Gatefold Sleeve. Originally shown on BBC1 in 1984, this David Attenborough 12 part series was the sequel to the pioneering ‘Life On Earth’, taking natural history television to a new level of brilliance.

The ground-breaking score was composed by Elizabeth Parker at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and released on vinyl by the BBC in the same year. Parker joined the BBC and in 1978 after gaining a master’s degree in composition and recording techniques at the University of East Anglia. She moved permanently to the Workshop’s Maida Vale studios where she realised the music for well over 300 TV and radio programmes before her departure in 1996.

The Emmy-nominated music for “The Living Planet” was performed on synthesisers, blending highly evocative themes, sounds and effects into a brilliant accompaniment to television’s stunning images of the Earth’s environments, and into an enthralling sound picture for this album.

MF DOOM – Live From Planet X

Image: 1603767 Experience the exceedingly rare genius of an MF DOOM live
performance with these exclusive “straight from the soundboard”
audio recordings. Broadcasting from an undisclosed location, this
limited-edition vinyl pressing of “Live From Planet X” offers fans a
chance to own the most comprehensive glance into Doom’s lengthy
career available.
Debuting under the alias Zev Love X, DOOM first graced the world
of hip-hop on the 3rd Bass single “The Gas Face.” A couple years
later Zev re-emerged alongside his younger brother DJ Subroc, in
New York’s legendary KMD. The group’s first album Mr. Hood was
released in 1991 on Elektra Records but KMD was quickly dropped
from the record label when, in the wake of Subroc being killed by a
car, they returned in ‘93 with an unflinching attitude and an album
titled “Bl_ck B_st_rds”. Deeply affected by his brother’s tragic death,
while also carrying a grudge against the industry that screwed him,
Zev disappeared from the rap scene for five years. It wasn’t until
1999, that Zev suddenly reemerged, face masked, as MF DOOM
with his 1999 solo debut and underground classic “Operation:
Doomsday”.
Since then DOOM has completely reinvented the indie-rap landscape
with a string of offbeat projects under an array of monikers: Metal
Fingers, Viktor Vaughn, King Geedorah, Monsta Island Czars,
Madvillain, DangerDOOM, NehruivanDOOM, and more. “Live From
Planet X” includes over 50 minutes of live recordings spanning
Operation Doomsday, Madvillain, MM…Food?, and more.

• MF DOOM is one of the top-selling independent artists in hiphop history, but his life remains shrouded in mystery, and live performances are increasingly rare.
• “Live From Planet X” is a historic document: a fullly-realized, vibrant, engaging live stage performance from this enigmatic genius, captured in pristine audio at an important moment in his career.
• This is the first DOOM live record to ever be available on vinyl

Trus’me – Planet 4
Friday, April 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Trus’me – Planet 4

Image: 1603277 Keeping with the rough release rate of an album every couple of years, Prime Numbers label boss Trus’me is back with his fourth full length, Planet 4. Featuring nine cuts of intergalactic Techno and once again marking a considerable sonic evolution for this acclaimed UK artist.

Never one to do the same trick twice, David James Wolstencroft uses his latest album as a vehicle for his own interest in deep space, physics and dark matter. It is those subjects that have occupied his mind in recent years, and those subjects that inform this brilliantly otherworldly album. Where previous LPs have variously been funk and soul heavy, or openly analogue and physical, this one is a more subtle and supple Techno affair that is as cerebral as it is seductive.

Starting with a monologue that suggests that man has already landed on Mars, ‘1979’ is a cut that immediately places you somewhere in orbit. Spooky synths and sci-fi sounds are eerie and atmospheric and very much set a perfect tone.

From there, there is slow, elastic and unsettling mood music on ‘The Unexplained’, deep and insular Techno on ‘Dark Flow’ and trippy Dan Bell style minimalism on ‘Ring Round Heart’. The second half of the LP touches on chunky dub, manic and melodic grooves.

This is a coherent statement that holds together conceptually and musically. As well as providing plenty of dynamite for the more discerning dance floor, Planet 4 is also a delightfully detailed affair that will work just as well on headphones late at night.

Sun Ra And His Intergalactic Research Arkestra ’Enlightenment’
Within their 1973 European tour, Sun Ra and his Arkestra had just completed
a residency at the legendary Gibus in Paris in October before travelling to
Amiens for a Sunday afternoon concert. Those filing into the city’s Maison de
la Culture that day would have little idea of the intense, visceral experience
that awaited them. “Sun Ra’s use of the Arkestra as his instrument in an
onslaught of sound, colour and movement stimulated and even shocked the
senses and the shakras of audience participants onto a higher plane of spirit
consciousness,“ explains the Arkestra’s Knoel Scott.
On Side 1, the session kicks off with the theatrical overture, ’Enlightenment’ as
Sun Ra and vocalist June Tyson invite the audience to “be of our space world“.
Ra then moves into a rare instrumental version of ’Love In Outer Space’,
transforming the perennial Arkestra classic into a raw, ritualistic experience:
“this was a vehicle for the Arkestra’s space dancers. Close your eyes and
imagine them writhing across the stage in celestial homage,“ explains Scott.
Side 2 of the album opens with the glistening ’Lights On A Satellite’, a feature
for the spiritual tenor sax of John Gilmore, playing in unison with trumpeter
Kwame Hadi. Closing track, the epic, chaotic, anxious ’Discipline 27-II / What
Planet Is This’ moves from abstract, freeform keyboard work from Sun Ra to
a walking groove as Sun Ra and June Tyson take a thinly veiled psychedelic
swipe at life on earth: “If this is a planet of life, why do people die here? “
Following 2014’s landmark compilation presented by Marshall Allen, ’In the

Image: 1592706 Afrika Bambaataa & Soul Sonic Force “Planet Rock” 12-inch re-issue on glow-in-the-dark vinyl (Limited edition of 1982 copies)
B-Boy anthem from 1982 lights up any dancefloor…literally! First time ever on glow-in-the-dark vinyl!

SIDE A – PLANET ROCK
SIDE B – PLANET ROCK INSTRUMENTAL

Fresh off Bambaataa’s historic donation of his vinyl collection to the Cornell
University Hip-Hop Collection and the Fall 2014 “Renegades of Rhythm” tour by
DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist celebrating his unparalleled contribution to hip-hop,
Get On Down celebrates the song for which the Godfather of Hip-Hop is best
known: 1982’s “Planet Rock,” a Kraftwerk-meets-Bronx-B-Boy anthem.
Renowned the world over as a never-fail floor-filler, this new 12-inch pressing of
the single is pressed on glow-in-the-dark vinyl for the first time ever.
Although Bambaataa may have gotten top-billing on the release, it was a team
effort, with crucial contributions by a team including DJ Jazzy Jay, Afrika Islam,
Arthur Baker, John Robie, a Roland TR-808 drum machine (aka Planet Patrol) and
of course MCs Mr. Biggs, G.L.O.B.E. and Pow Wow. This edition is housed in a
clear, custom-embossed Get On Down poly-bag to let the glow show through. Available from 28.11.2014

First Planet – Top Of The World / I Want To Thank You Baby
Friday, September 19th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on First Planet – Top Of The World / I Want To Thank You Baby

Image: 1591840 Afro-space-disco contagion – shuffling and wiggling, synthy and bubbling – from this re-incarnation of Willy Nfor’s Mighty Flames, recruited mostly from the wave of Cameroonian musicians drawn to Nigeria in the late-1970s by its heavy new funk sound.

After a stint at the Right Time studio in Onitsha, the FP cadets ended up at Phonodisk in Lagos, quickly in high demand as session-players, running First Planet on the side with other Nigerian session players from the Onitsha/Awka axis. Its name was intended to evoke the cool obliqueness of US handles like Brass Construction and Lakeside, and the mothership connection of chocolate-city P-Funk. The Troutmans are in the mix, too.

Soon Vincent Omoko and the other Planeteers would travel to Port Harcourt, working in Geraldo Pino’s band for several years. They also ran a side-project called The Extended Family, fronted by Cameroonian keyboardist Etienne T-Boy.

Excellent sound by way of Abbey Road and D&M, first pressing includes 24″ by 12″ poster. Available from 26.09.2014

Captain Planet – Esperanto Slang
Thursday, September 18th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Captain Planet – Esperanto Slang

Image: 1592293 Globe-trotting beatmaker Captain Planet returns to soundsystems worldwide with his hotly anticipated sophomore album Esperanto Slang, a transformative LP which further illuminates the “Gumbo Funk” producer’s fluency in breaking boundaries between genres and bridging continents through rhythm. Steeped in finely-tuned collaborations with artists from across the map, the album documents the Captain’s continued musical travels in the wake of his critically-acclaimed 2011 debut album Cookin’ Gumbo and subsequent ‘Mystery Trip’ beat-tape (heralded “Best Music of 2012” by Sasha Frere-Jones in The New Yorker).

Led by the smashing Latin-House single “Un Poquito Mas” featuring Spanish lyrics from fellow international beats don Chico Mann(Soundway), the album also finds Captain Planet traveling South to join forces with esteemed Argentinian electronic chanteuse La Yegros (ZZK) on “Que Quiero Volver,” as well as Brazilian artists Samira Winter and Nevilton on the Samba heater “Tudo de Bom.” Jumping to the motherland, “Safaru” showcases the Sudanese vocalist and NPR darling Alsarah’s soaring Arabic vocals, with horn arrangements by L.A. brass legend and Kelis’s bandleader Todd Simon. A banging Bachata-infused club anthem “Perdido en el Excesso” further weaves a transcontinental thread with the help of Berlin-based rapper Paco Mendoza, while the crushing reggae vibes of the album’s 7-inch single “In The Gray” brings the islands to the West Coast with the help of soul singer Brit Lauren backed by horns from supergroup The Lions (Ubiquity).

Throughout the entire album, border-crossing collaborations on both vocal and instrumental tracks seamlessly translate the musical synergies between global dancefloor cultures. Blending a wide range styles from NY hip-hop, UK bass and Turkish psychedelic, to Nigerian Afrobeat and Amazonian funk, Esperanto Slang demonstrates that Captain Planet’s trademark sound has matured into a truly unique form of electronic music, connecting scenes and languages worldwide through his mellifluous sonic thesaurus.

Max Graef – Rivers Of The Red Planet
Thursday, April 24th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Max Graef – Rivers Of The Red Planet

Image: 1587379 Tartelet have a knack for uncovering virtuosic, off-kilter electronic music. Max Graef’s debut album is no exception. Double vinyl only, this will surely sell out.

Tartelet has a knack for uncovering virtuosic, off-kilter electronic music. Max Graef—born, bred and still holding it down in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg—is their latest artist in this mold. Though adventurous dance music is thick on the ground in the German capital, Graef’s 2013 run of singles, cropping up on Graef’s own Box aus Holz, plus Melbourne
Deepcast, The Gym, Heist and Tartelet, continually surprised, infusing worn-in house with manic energy and acrobatic elasticity. Where many of his peers make languid, self-consciously laid-back tunes, Graef makes brilliantly restless ones. Dropping the needle on one of his EPs, you nearly expect it to pop right off again.
Rivers of the Red Planet, Graef’s first full-length and Tartelet’s latest album project, takes all that wildness and refines, expands, updates and scrambles it. It’s as ambitious and deviously entertaining a record as you’ll hear in 2014, the fulfillment of Graef’s desire to make anything but another contemporary house music album. At any given moment,
Rivers of the Red Planet feels like it could have been recorded through the smoke at a jazz club in the booth at a techno club 30 years from now or inside an MPC stocked with crusty dollar-bin samples. (We’d guess the staff at Graef’s beloved OYE Records in Berlin will have a difficult time settling on which section to file it in.) If it sounds sampled, it’s a testament to Graef’s natural musicianship and production prowess —the record is heavy on sounds he played himself, from drums and Rhodes to fat synth melodies wrung out of an old Crumar Performer water-damaged to perfection. For vocals, Graef enlisted Nigerian singer Wayne Snow, whose rugged soulfulness makes him a natural pairing.
On cuts like “Drums Of Death” and “Speed Metal Jesus,” the clubreadiness of his EPs lives on. But Rivers of the Red Planet may be most at home in your living room, with a good bottle of red and a roaring fire’s crackles mixing with the pops and hiss of the vinyl—a playful listen that sinks in, burrowing deep and getting you all warm and gooey on the
inside.

Digable Planets – Blowout Comb
Thursday, June 27th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Digable Planets – Blowout Comb

Image: 1581307 Reissue of the 1994 second album by cult, Brooklyn-based hip hop trio Digable Planets. Limited edition first pressing with embossed cover and 18″× 24″ fold-out poster.

The album is named for the combs used to maintain an Afro hairstyle, and that’s significant. The group’s Ishmael ”Butterfly” Butler said it summed up what they wanted to do with it: ””It means the utilization of the natural, a natural style,” he has said.

Like with 1993’s debut Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space), ‘utilizing the natural’ meant creating hip hop that blended jazz with the formidable rap skills of the aforementioned Butterfly, Craig ‘Doodlebug’ Irving and Mary Ann ‘Ladybug Mecca’ Vieira. Unlike that debut, it meant broadening to include guests such as Gang Starr’s Guru, Jeru the Damaja, and Jazzy Joyce.

Following the gold-selling commercial success of their debut, they here set out to prove their artistic prowess. This is intelligent, alternative hip hop that sounded like party music. Its lyrics are dense with wit, social commentary and politics – and its original inner sleeve was modeled on the newspaper of the Black Panther movement.

Its instrumentation includes sax, vibraphone and flute. Its samples – gathered from global cratedigging trips while touring the first album around the world – included Grant Green, Eddie Harris, Shuggie Otis and jazz-funk pioneer Roy Ayers (whose ”We Live in Brooklyn, Baby” became ”Borough Check” here). And yet at the same time its beats are infectious and its spirit undeniable.

This is an album firmly rooted in Brooklyn. ”Growing up hearing and cherishing this album, it created a textured soundscape of a mythical world of rhymes, jazz, breakbeats, culture, art and urban ambiance,” says DJ and fan Mick Boogie in the liner notes. ”When I moved to Brooklyn years later, I found that the world I imagined while listening to this classic LP actually really existed… ”

Though Digable Planets have reunited on occasion since – and though their influence endures in every top-shelf rap act with a jazzy sensibility – the trio parted ways after Blowout Comb, citing that old favorite ””creative differences”. Sometimes, the most volatile combinations create the best art.

“Night And Day” connects the dots between Oriol’s musical tastes – from the 70’s fusion and experimentation of Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder to the lush house of Theo Parrish, Larry Heard and Recloose, into drum and bass and dubstep.

Alan Myson (Ital Tek) from Brighton is well-known for the creation of futuristic dubstep soundscapes. Meeting dubstep and garage’s matrix of sub bass and lurching 2-step rhythms half-way with electronica at its most melodic, “Midnight Colour” is its name and it’s epic. The mood has lightened since his debut “Cyclical” plus the tempo has dropped […]

The project has a Beach Boys/Brian Wilson/Beatles influenced sound, but it manages to avoid being another exercise in retro comfort music because Brad Laner and Alex Graham use laptop trickery learnt form their more experimental pasts to bring their sound firmly into the present.
