Amin Payne & Ben Bada Boom – Collision
Thursday, February 13th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Amin Payne & Ben Bada Boom – Collision

Image: 1585969 “In this day and age distance, time and space no longer present the barriers that they previously did. ‘Collision’ the brand new future beats and jnstrumental Hip-Hop EP from Amin Payne (AUS) and Ben bada boom (GER) is testament to this. Having never met in person yet sharing similar and different views of music have collaborated on a musical journey encompassing sound bytes swapped over the digital landscape into a product. This journey showcases the strengths of both of these producers and aims to deliver a unique style.”
BEN BADA BOOM is a 26 year old beatmaker and design artist who is based in Hamburg, Germany. 3B´s sounds come from various influences such as Electronic, Funk and Soul. He takes those influences and then turns them into something new. With a result clearly linked to hip-hop and broken beat. Current, but difficult to classify genre wise. His compositions are characterized by an occasional glimpse of 8-Bit, some 80’s synth work and Celtic tunes. With something of a stray jazz trumpet defends dirty points. Ben has focused on bringing a new, yet fresh, unheard sound using many unique techniques.
Amin Payne is… Raised in Auckland but currently based in Melbourne, Amin PaYnE’s sound is deeply rooted in both smooth and luscious sample based hip-hop, as well as the modernity and creativity of the current beat scene. Amin Payne is a consistent crate digger with influences in both taste and production style as varied and complimentary as J-Dilla, Pete Rock, Kashiff, Isley Brothers, and Marvin Gaye. A mix of both vintage and fresh sounds clearly reflect the dusty and crunchy, yet soulful music. Amin was a recent member of the Sold out Red Bull beat suite which was a performance with a 15 piece orchestra, 3 beatmakers, 2 turtablists and Aloe Blacc & ladi 6. Amin has shared stages with Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer, Peanut Butter Wolf, Eric Lau, Kev Brown, Ras G, Kaytranada, Oddisee ..

J Dilla – Diamonds / Ice
Thursday, September 12th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on J Dilla – Diamonds / Ice

Image: 1584154 The Estate of James Yancey revived J Dilla’s PayJay Productions as a functioning imprint and
announced its release of Dilla’s long lost vocal album, The Diary, with the first Pay Jay single “Anthem”
b/w “Trucks.” Response to the start of this landmark project was enthusiastic, to say the least. Pitchfork
said “Ever since J Dilla’s death in 2006, a steady stream of posthumous material has been released,
with varying degrees of legitimacy. But this one is particularly huge, and totally legit: The Diary is a lost
vocal album Dilla completed in the early 2000s.”
Pay Jay now announces the second single from The Diary with what might be the two best known tracks
from the album, as both were issued in bootleg and promotional forms over the years. But these versions
– both final and alternate mixes – come straight from mixed-down masters that Dilla himself created.
“The Shining Pt. 1,” better known as “Diamonds” was produced by Virginia’s Nottz. “The Shining Pt. 2,”
better known as “Ice” was produced by Dilla’s Jaylib collaborator Madlib. This section deserves particular
note, as the album version and “Ruff Draft” version are so markedly different – and show the musical
direction that Dilla would embark upon after he shelved The Diary in 2002.
Rounding out this 12” is a Madlib instrumental that was never turned into the final song, titled “The D,”
that Dilla had hoped to create. We’ve included this beat as a hint of what could have been.
The first press of this 12” features clear vinyl atop an original Jeff Jank sleeve with art by B+ and
Shepard Fairey and placed in a thick, fold-over plastic sleeve. Subsequent runs will not have the clear
vinyl or the fold-over plastic sleeve.

SIDE A
1. Diamonds – The Shining Pt. 1
2. Diamonds – The Shining Pt. 1 (Alternate)
3. Diamonds – The Shining Pt. 1 (Instrumental)
SIDE B
1. Ice – The Shining Pt. 2
2. Ice – The Shining Pt. 2 (Ruff Draft Version)
3. Ice – The Shining Pt. 2 (Instrumental)
4. The D Available from 23.08.2013

J Dilla – Anthem / Trucks
Thursday, May 9th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on J Dilla – Anthem / Trucks

Image: 1580057 Pay Jay Productions, Inc. was the company James Dewitt “J Dilla” Yancey founded in 2001 to house
his production company and his publishing company. The Estate of James Yancey has revived
Pay Jay as a functioning imprint, and is announcing its release of J Dilla’s long lost vocal album,
The Diary. The first single features “Anthem” b/w “Trucks” – two of the songs J Dilla recorded in late
2001 and early 2002 as he put the finishing touches on what was supposed to be an album featuring
his raps over production by the likes of Madlib, Pete Rock, Nottz, House Shoes, Karriem Riggins
and others.
These two tracks, however, were produced by Dilla himself and come straight from multi-track
masters found on 2” tape shortly after Dilla’s passing in 2006. These songs have been mixed by
engineer Dave Cooley, who worked extensively with Dilla during his years in Los Angeles. Using
Dilla’s original demo mixes as his guide, Cooley attempted to finalize Dilla’s vision for these tracks,
while keeping all of the elements that Dilla had in place in his original demos present.
Rounding out this 12” is Dilla’s original mix of “Trucks,” discovered as a two-track demo mix. We’ve
included this mix as it features an alternate version of Dilla’s vocals and a third verse not found on
Dilla’s final sessions for this song.
The first press of this 12” features clear vinyl atop an original Jeff Jank sleeve with art by
Mason London and placed in a thick, fold-over plastic sleeve. Subsequent runs will not have the
clear vinyl or the fold-over plastic sleeve.

Originally released in March 2006 and virtually
impossible to procure on vinyl ever since, BBE
are excited to announce a special ten year
anniversary edition of the classic Visioneers
album Dirty Old Hip Hop. Brainchild of 4Hero
founder and Reinforced Records founder Marc
Mac, the Visioneers project frst appeared in
2005 with seminal album ‘How About A Game of
Chess’, shortlisted for Gilles Peterson’s coveted
Worldwide album of the Year award. For the
follow up, Marc began re-imagining his favourite
hip hop beats from the golden era, retaining the
feel of those extended, looping grooves whilst
also re-introducing the excitement and
musicianship of the records from which they
were sampled: ‘Dirty Old Hip Hop’ was born.
Drawing on the musical talents of Brad Somatik
and 4hero drummer Luke Parkhouse, this largely
instrumental album also featured stunning
performances from rappers Capitol A and Voice.
An artist who was introduced to jazz music by his
favourite hip hop beat-makers, ‘Dirty Old Hip
Hop’ serves as a loving tribute to both art-forms,
weaving the two together until even the most
ardent purist will fnd it hard to defne any space
between.
“Visioneers is not a band, it’s a studio project. I
want to pay respect to hip hop producers like
Jazzy Jef, Jay Dee and Pete Rock for introducing
me to Jazz and I needed to produce the tracks
like hip hop records that sound phat in a club
and not like dinner Jazz, it’s about reclaiming
Jazz.” – Marc Mac, 2006
Pressed on heavyweight orange vinyl, ‘Dirty Old
Hip Hop’ will be available in December 2017
Key selling points:
– Contains iconic re-composed versions of hip
hop classics The World Is Yours by Nas and
Runnin’ by the Pharcyde alongside original
tracks.
– Blurring the lines between hip hop and jazz, the
album is equally appealing to purist fans of
either style.
– Unavailable and in-demand on vinyl for almost
a decade, the album currently fetches up to £80
on Discogs.
– repress on lovely heavyweight orange vinyl

Q u o t e s

“One of the 50 coolest records ever made” (Rolling Stone)

“Their message? The Unforgotten suffering of their Ancestors as they toiled, in blood sweat and tears only to perish. Their jubilation ? The Realisation that for this inhuman act, someday, Babylon will pay” (Joe Gibbs)

“There has been no other artist in history of reggae that has written so much upliftings songs using only major chord progressions…” (David Hinds / Steel Pulse)

“Culture has made his mark. It was a good mark, a firm mark. When people say reggae music, they will always think of Culture. Culture’s musical philosophy will live on” (Winston Rodney / Burning Spear)

“From the time we walked into studio it was a special session…whenever Joseph (Hill) came into Gibbo’s studio it was special. When we play with him it was just like magic” (Sly Dunbar)

“The omniously foreshadowed title track, and its surrounding brethren, carry their redemptive air lightly, the skip of skittering rhythms and humorous asides from the organ framing Culture’s triparite harmony, Hill rough-edged, the backgrounds flirting with the falsetto” (Lenny Kaye)

“This album ranks as one of the greatest reggae albums ever recorded. It still sounds as fresh today as it did when I first heard it” (Mick Hucknall / Simply Red)

The rumour for the Culture song “Two Sevens Clash” and The Clash:
“It was Paul Simenon who suggested calling the band the Clash. The name derives from a reggae track released in Jamaica in 1976 by Culture called “Two Sevens Clash” (quote from the book by Jon Stratton “Jewish Identity In Western Pop Culture” / chapter “Bernie Rhodes and Displaced Apocalypse”)

descended into Civil War in 1967. The rock scene that developed during the
following three years of bloodshed and destruction would come to heal the
country, propagate the world-wide ideal of the Modern Nigerian, and propel
Fela to stardom after conflict ended in 1970.
Wake Up You! tells the story of this time, pays homage to these now-forgotten
musicians and their struggle, and brings to light the funk and psychedelic fury
they created as they wrested free of the ravages of the late 1960s and created
thrilling, original Nigerian rock music throughout the 1970s.

because of insufficient support/promotion from their

Various – The Very Polish Cut-Outs Vol.4
Wednesday, May 6th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – The Very Polish Cut-Outs Vol.4

Image: 1597069 Another bunch of successful edits on the unstoppable TVPC label. It’s fourth sampler (and already a seventh record in label history) covers a wide array of exceptional gems, spanning from balearic pop, through electro disco, to slavic soul and disco funk. All tracks come from the late 70’s and early 80’s Poland and were carefully reworked by some of the finest young producers from the country, keen to pay homage to their musical roots.

The A-Side is owned by the young and talented Karol Aleksander, who brings two of his most popular reworks to the table. A1, which clocks around 100 bpm, is an irresistible combination of sportive, yet modest groove with slick, sexy female vocals. A2 on the contrary is a melancholy-filled piece of Balearic house, based on old Polish pop track with addictive piano lines triggering the feeling of nostalgia for something that passed imperceptibly.

Italo-fueled dancefloor madness opens the B-Side, curated by Kracow based combo of Unitrax & Radar groups. Four deejays, who usually are affiliated with deeper side of electronic spectrum, play around with rather unusual track lifted from Polish rock group debut album. B2 is handled by Polish house wunderkind Selvy, who closes the record with a touch of classy Indian summer vibes.

The most beautiful moments of the short original version are extended with a great effect.

All in all another must have in The Very Polish Cut-Outs catalogue!

TRACK LISTING:

A1. KAROL ALEKSANDER – WITAJCIE W MOIM SWIECIE
A2. KAROL ALEKSANDER – JA
B1. RADAR & UNITRAX – DIAMENTOWA KULA

J Dilla – Give Them What They Want

Image: 1588711 The Estate of James Yancey revived J Dilla’s PayJay Productions as a functioning imprint and announced its release of Dilla’s long lost vocal album, The Diary. Thus far, two limited edition EPs – “Anthem” b/w “Trucks” and “Diamonds” b/w “Ice” – have seen release. “Give Them What They Want” is the last EP that will be released before The Diary is unleashed in full. “Give Them What They Want” is a special treat – an unheard J Dilla-produced vocal track that has never before been released. It is paired on this release with the Super Dave West version, entitled “The Doe,” and a second West-produced track, “No One’s Home.” “Give Them What They Want” was mixed by Dilla himself, and its component instrumental was mixed down to match Dilla’s vocal version by Dave Cooley, from Dilla’s original multi-track sessions.
The first press of this 12” features clear vinyl atop a Jeff Jank-altered photograph by James T. & Karla L. Murray from their lauded book Store Front – The Disappearing Face of New York (Gingko Press) and an original label illustration by Denise Nestor. Subsequent runs will not have the clear vinyl or the fold-over plastic sleeve.

SIDE A
1. Give Them What They Want
2. Give Them What They Want
(Instrumental)
SIDE B
1. The Doe
2. The Doe (Instrumental)
3. No One’s Home Available from 09.05.2014

Maceo Plex – DJ-Kicks
Friday, May 17th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Maceo Plex – DJ-Kicks

Image: 1579679 Sometimes you have to look backwards to move forwards. In the case of Maceo Plex’s DJ Kicks mix, it’s case of looking back with a different perspective. While Maceo Plex’s mix is composed mainly of records that are up to 20 years old, it’s the tone of those records that is important.
Eric Estornel, to use Plex’s real name, has certainly come up with a forward-thing set that doesn’t sound like much else out there.

“The whole mix is very dark,” agrees Estornel. “But it’s very varied as well. It’s really boring to stay one style. If you’re a lover of music, you don’t love one style. I think it’s important to travel through different styles.” The end result is an education, a lesson in how electronic music for the dancefloor is done with intelligence.

Crucially, Estornel has re-edited nearly every track on the mix. “Most of the tracks are really old, so they needed freshening up,” he says. “A lot of them were missing percussion, or some other element I thought they could use.” I went through my own stuff and previous DJ Kicks mixes. Y’know, research. I think it is the most important mix series so I wanted to make sure it was music that I really loved and I want to hear in five or ten years time.
But isn’t it a bit of a contradiction, trying to bump electronic music out of a retro rut by looking to a different set of old records. Estornel reasons it thus: “A lot of the music on there is old, but basically has the sounds and the type of vibe that I think is missing these days. I went through a lot of new music. I didn’t want to select anything that everyone is playing at the moment and I definitely didn’t want to select anything that was already out on digital. The whole mix is comprised of vinyl only and is not going to be out on digital other than the DJ Kicks mix. To do that I had to go through a lot of new music and a lot of old music, and there wasn’t much new music that I really loved.
In time-honoured tradition, the mix contains a massive 10! exclusive tracks, the lead kicks track bing Galactic Cinema, a muscular and suitably off-world house chug. “I’m kind of known for a couple of big disco records and some really deep bassline house tracks, but that track much darker, but still pretty sexy and soulful. The whole thing is dark and futuristic.”

“This mix is kind of my legacy, or, at least, part of it,” says Estornel, by way of a parting thought. “In ten or twenty years I’m going to want to go back and listen to this mix and I hope it’s still fresh.”
Who knows. It sounds pretty timeless right now, though.

It’s almost an overwrought subject to mention the power of names; the idea whether they choose us or we choose them and if, in reality there is any difference. Religious converts, celebrities, super heroes–they all take on names that fit their attributes, their ideas of self. Malcolm X. Marilyn Monroe. Superman. Mudfoot. Doesn’t sound right. […]

The overwhelming response to […]

Will Holland aka Quantic has been building up a reputation as a prolific musician, writer, remixer and producer since his first release on Tru Thoughts in January 2001. In that time he has released six albums for the label under the Quantic, The Limp Twins and the Quantic Soul Orchestra monikers. Through this period he has been hugely in demand as a remixer from artists and labels (both major and upcoming) and has amassed a huge discography of “One Offs, Remixes & B Sides” which is what his new album is about.

One Offs, Remixes & B Sides” is a self-explanatory collection of Quantic tracks that have not been made available together until now and have not appeared on his other three albums for Tru Thoughts. The majority of the tracks on this double CD set were originally vinyl-only releases and the album includes four previously unreleased tracks, including the Quantic and Mr Scruff collaboration “Giraffe Walk” …

Holy moly, the year 2005 is almost over. And so many changes happened we can’t even remember. Most recently we had to congratulate Mrs. Merkel for becoming the first female chancellor of Germany, but honestly nobody really cared. As always the much more important news came from overseas. Have you heard that our beloved newlyweds Jessica and Nick split up after they had stolen the hearts of audiences everywhere? And Britney sold Kevin’s Ferrari. Oh boy…But through all these times of melancholy one thing will remain the same and stay forever, and that’s our pure love for music.

So in good ol’ tradition we asked around what Groove Attack’s employees have been listening to in 2005. Read on ‘cuz this list is for you …
