Del The Funky Homosapien & Tame One – Parallel Uni-Verses (Colored Vinyl)
Sunday, January 14th, 2018 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Del The Funky Homosapien & Tame One – Parallel Uni-Verses (Colored Vinyl)

Image: 1617249 Remember the old-school Marvel Team-Up comic book which paired,
say, Spider-Man with Thor, Wolverine with the Human Torch, or the Hulk
and Daredevil? In the spirit of those classic collaborations, Gold Dust
announces Parallel Uni-Verses, a joint effort between Hieroglyphics
founder Del The Funky Homosapien and original Artifacts emcee Tame
One. Produced entirely by Parallel Thought, the album’s ten tracks return
to a time when inventiveness, creativity, funky beats—and, above all,
lyricism—ruled hip-hop.
Oakland’s Del The Funky Homosapien is one of the creators of the
alternative rap genre, a perennial fan favorite who, in addition to releasing
four solo albums—including 1992’s seminal, gold-selling I Wish My
Brother George Was Here–and two group albums with Hieroglyphics,
was featured on the Gorillaz’ epononymous, platinum-selling debut and
Dan the Automator’s sci-f-themed concept album Deltron 3030.
Newark’s Tame One is best known as one-half of the Artifacts, a graffitiwriting hip-hop duo active in the mid- and late-90s, whose output includes
the classic singles “Wrong Side of Da Tracks” and “The Ultimate.” In recent
years, Tame has been a member of two underground supergroups: the
Weatherman (with Cage, Camu Tao, and Aesop Rock), and the Leak
Brothers (with Cage).
Parallel Uni-Verses is that rare rap album which transcends tired clichés
and maintains traditional hip-hop values without seeming retro or passé.
“Man, I ain’t even gonna be egotistical like that and try to say that we
are trying to usher in some new revival of whatever,” Del says. However,
he adds, “I’m a say this: we ARE the element that is missing, not [just]
because I said so. That’s what’s up, we didn’t sell out for all the luxury
and monetary gains. The original ways, we kept at and built upon those.

Dday One & Lex (de Kalhex) – Parallel Presence
Wednesday, May 24th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Dday One & Lex (de Kalhex) – Parallel Presence

Image: 1610287 The Content Label presents a dynamic new split EP from Lex (de
Kalhex) and Dday One, titled “Parallel Presence”. The EP’s title
reveals some clues: ‘parallel’ refers to something similar to another,
while ‘presence’ imagines a thing that exists but is not seen. These
two producers, as kindred spirits, strive to work on this deeper level.
Parallel Presence is an expressive step forward, presenting intricate
beats, thoughtful samples, and otherworldly vibes colluding towards
a mesmerizing whole.
Los Angeles based producer Dday One bookends the EP with “Key
Signature” and “Moving Force”, displaying his undisputed acumen
for rhythm construction and skillful arrangement. The opening track,
in particular, is a beat-head’s manna, featuring a serpentine bass
line, staccato vocals, and heavy piano riffs, all synchronized at a
headnodic tempo. Alex Besikian aka Lex (de Kalhex) is a visual artist,
producer, and MC, known as the co-founder of Paris’s Akromégalie
Records and 1/3 of seminal French hip hop group Kalhex. His cuts
“Brilliant Circles” – with its night owl drum beat, tinkling electric keys,
and gentle horn line – and “Solstice” – featuring ringing tones, bluesy
guitar riffs, velvet saxophone, and some serious rhythm play –
uncannily compliment Dday One’s contributions, cementing “Parallel
Presence” as an EP best ingested from front to back.
Visual and audio art also come together in the project’s cover
design, which was a collaborative effort of the two producers. The
Content Label aims to bring together distinct forms of expression,
with sound, thought, and visual art combining through the imprint’s
releases. “Parallel Presence” is just the latest evidence.

Gene The Southern Child/Parallel Thougt – Southern Meridian
Thursday, August 28th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Gene The Southern Child/Parallel Thougt – Southern Meridian

Image: 1590466 From a small town called Florence, Alabama, Gene the Southern Child has been quietly releasing music under the radar for years. Florence is part of an area known as “The Shoals,” which houses the legendary FAME Recording Studios and is also the hometown of W.C. Handy “The Father of Blues.” Hailing from this rich musical history, Gene’s unique style is smooth Southern hip-hop, incorporating poetry, blues, and soul. His is a fresh perspective in what is an often redundant niche. Southern Meridian is Gene’s latest collaboration with production team Parallel Thought and his proper solo debut. Recorded on a weeklong trip to The Paradigm, Parallel Thought’s New Jersey Studio, the album is an amalgam of rich storytelling, provocative social commentary, booming beats, and impeccable production. Its refined sound breaks the heretofore conventions of Southern rap, and Gene draws the listener in with his stories of the deep South. The album, inspired by Cormac Mccarthy’s crimson-soaked novel Blood Meridian, comes on the heels of A Ride with the Southern Child and Artillery Splurgin’, Gene’s much-praised last two albums, also produced entirely by Parallel Thought.
Gene and Parallel Thought have partnered with Adult Swim who will release Southern Meridian for free online. Known as an influential powerhouse for popular late-night television, Adult Swim has also made a name for itself by defying the traditional music business model with its offshoot record label Williams Street Records. The network has not only introduced the masses to artists like J Dilla, Madlib, and Flying Lotus with their groundbreaking “Bumps Series,” but it has also released highly acclaimed albums for Dangerdoom and Killer Mike & El-P.
Additional collaborators include Emmy Award-Winning Filmmaker Rob and the production team House of Nod for music videos and Kevin Vitella for album artwork. Vitella’s depiction of the lonesome poet standing in front of his barren landscape is the perfect nod to the album’s message and tone.

Third impressive chapter for Alex Puddu’s “Golden Age of Danish Pornography”, a cult series of soundtrack-like tracks inspired by the unmistakable sounds of the ’60s and the ’70s. As usual, Alex is doing (almost) everything by himself – writing, arranging, producing and performing with a little help from a few trusty friends. Disco funk, tribal […]

In good old tradition we asked around what the employees of Groove Attack, Rough Trade, and GoodToGo have been listening to during the past twelve months. Naturally it’s a wild mixture of rock, pop, folk, hip hop, reggae, jazz, dance music, and obscure underground stuff – as diverse as we are. Nonetheless, what you’ll find […]
