Sara Lugo – Hit Me With Music
Friday, September 19th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sara Lugo – Hit Me With Music

I Really Like You” abfeiern. Wem Saras Debut “What About Love” gefallen hat, wird von “Hit Me With Music” garantiert nicht enttäuscht sein. Available from 17.10.2014

Shina Williams & His African Percussions – Agboju Logun

Image: 1609896 Strut present a brand new 12” reissue of Shina Williams’ monster Nigerian disco anthem ‘Agboju Logun’, pairing the rare original album version (released on Phonodisk Nigeria) with the more sparse 12” remix which surfaced later internationally on Earthworks. This is the third release on STRUT’S new Original Masters Series.

Tracklisting:

B1. AGBOJU LOGUN (LP version)

Strut present a brand new 12” reissue of Shina Williams’ monster Nigerian disco anthem ‘Agboju Logun’, pairing the rare original album version (released on Phonodisk Nigeria) with the more sparse 12” remix which surfaced later internationally on Earthworks.
Back in 1979 when Shina Williams’ ‘Agboju Logun’ frst appeared on his ‘African Dances’ LP, Williams knew well that the track was breaking new ground. “I want to show the whole wide world that Africa is alive with modern musicians to reckon with anywhere,” he stated. Now an accepted Afro disco classic of its time, ‘Agboju Logun’ did indeed bring together the cream of Nigeria’s players as a oneoff supergroup in one inspired session. As a long-standing and well respected highlife musician and vocalist, Williams called in the ‘A’ list: Tunde Martins from Afro Collective played bass guitar, the brilliant Biddy Wright (player on albums by Lijadu Sisters, Blo and many more) contributed the famous synth lines and handled production, Fred Fisher was on trombone and Saliu Alabi played talking drum.
Enjoying limited success upon its release in Nigeria, ‘African Dances’ nevertheless gained some international attention when Earthworks’ Jumbo Van Renan licensed two tracks from it for an international 12” single release in 1984, remixing ‘Agboju Logun’ in a more stripped back mix for dancefloors. However, it was the period following Fela Kuti’s death in the late ‘90s that truly ignited interest in archive African grooves for a new
internet generation. Strut’s frst ‘Nigeria 70’ compilation featured the track in 2000 and it has been a staple in DJs’ crates ever since. ‘Abboju Logun’ is released in a picture jacket 12” featuring original artwork and all musicians’ credits and is fully remastered by The Carvery.

KEY POINTS:
– First offcial reissue of 12” version and LP version together
– Restored by See Why Audio and remastered by The Carvery

Sean P Presents – Under The Influence Vol.5
Friday, June 3rd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sean P Presents – Under The Influence Vol.5

Image: 1604196 2015 was a productive year for Z Records with the release of Opolopo’s artist album, the Joey Negro compiled
Le Freak – a tribute to the sound of Chic, 90’s House & Garage and the long awaited Supafunkanova Vol.2.
As a result 2016 had a lot to live up to but it has already started in fine form with the release of Volume Two of
Joey Negro’s Remixed With Love series, an album that has been supported by dj’s across the board and has
been lauded as a landmark album in it’s genre.
Z Records continues its commitment to unearthing the obscure and long forgotten tracks from the last 40 years
through the ever-popular Under The Influence series. Following on from Red Greg, Paul Phillips, James Glass
and Nick The Record it’s now the turn of another of the worlds most respected record collectors to put
together their selection. This time it’s long time Z Records album co-compiler Sean P.
Alongside Joey Negro, Sean P has been responsible for some killer selections for their Soul of Disco and
Supafunkanova series, all of which feature tracks from Sean’s vast record collection. He has been collecting
records since his early years, producing and releasing his own edits way before they became the norm and is
widely recognized as one of the foremost fountains of musical knowledge so to say he is a stalwart of the
underground music scene is well deserved.
For his UTI album he goes even deeper and much more across the board with tracks taking in afro, soul, funk,
disco, Brit Funk, dub and jazz with many of the tracks costing hundreds if you were able to find the originals.
Included in the booklet are extensive track notes from Sean highlighting what he knows about these records
and, where they are super-rare and obscure, what he doesn’t.
As always with ZR compilations a lot of time and effort has been spent on creating these masters from the
original vinyl, cleaning them up, removing all the clicks and pops resulting in the cleanest sounding copy
possible.

Sun Ra – In Some Far Place: Roma 77
Saturday, May 28th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sun Ra – In Some Far Place: Roma 77

Image: 1604346 1977 was a transitional time for jazz enigma and self-proclaimed member of
an “angel race“, Sun Ra. During the Summer of 1976, he had stormed Montreux
and toured West Africa with one of the greatest of his full-sized Arkestras
before embarking on occasional solo concerts for the f irst time, emphasising
his prowess at the piano. Although he had always played the blues within
Arkestra sets, he now summoned up the rolling tradition of blues piano,
recalling Otis Spann, Avery Parrish, stride and ricky-tick styles.
He made two solo albums for Paul Bley ’s Improvising Artists label (’Solo Piano’
and ’St. Louis Blues’) before travelling to Rome. For the concert, featured
here, Ra brought in drummer Luqman Ali, who had been part of the Arkestra
during the band’s early Chicago years, and vocalist Thomas Thaddeus aka
Eddie Thomas. Thomas was a percussionist, dancer and “incense dude“ with
the Arkestra throughout the late ‚70s period. He would appear again on Ra’s
’Lanquidity ’ album for Philly Jazz in ’79.
During this intimate concert, Ra takes us through piano and synthesizer
renditions of Arkestra staples like ’Love In Outer Space’, ’Space Is The Place’
and ’Calling Planet Earth’ but also explores a selection of jazz standards.
Among them, we hear the f irst ever released Ra version of the 1930s staple
’I Cover The Waterfront’ alongside a dissonant version of ’Sometimes I Feel
Like A Motherless Child’ and ’St. Louis Blues’. Ra’s ties to Italy would continue
the following year as he recorded three acclaimed albums for Horo Records,
run by f ilmmaker turned label owner, Aldo Sinesio.
Following 2014’s Marshall Allen compilation, ’In the Orbit Of Ra’ and 2015’s
Gilles Peterson-curated ’To Those Of Earth… And Other Worlds’, Strut and
Art Yard join forces once more for the f irst release anywhere of ’In Some Far
Place: Roma ’77’. Recorded direct from the sound board and mastered from f irst
generation reel to reel tapes, this is one of the very few trio albums by Sun Ra
ever to be released. The release features rare photos from recently deceased
photographer H.L. Lindenmaier with sleeve notes by the Sun Ra Arkestra’s
Knoel Scott.

“Sun Ra and the Arkestra were the original DIY group. What went on in 1970s punk with self-pressed records and hand-drawn artwork – Ra was
doing that in the ‘50s and ‘60s. The music was phenomenal – Sun Ra was the man, the ultimate artist for any vinyl collector.“ Gilles Peterson Strut follow up their hugely successful Marshall Allen-curated ‘In The Orbit Of Ra’ compilation with a newly curated set from the immense 125 LP back catalogue of jazz maverick, DIY philosopher and self-professed member of an “angel race”, Sun Ra. ‘To Those Of Earth… And Other Worlds’ is a handpicked selection from BBC 6Music DJ Gilles Peterson, long-time champion of Ra’s music and the UK’s leading tastemaker for jazz-based sounds. It serves as perhaps the best introduction yet to the music of Sun Ra for a whole new generation of converts.

Sun Ra was a one-off in the annals of jazz. As author Robert L. Campbell describes, “He claimed to be the last of the swing band leaders, yet dosed classic songs with LSD. He wrote poetry about the “coming space age” and claimed to be a citizen of Saturn. He dressed himself and his band in goldlame and lectured on the Creator’s message to the cruel and deceitful Earthman. He named himself after an Egyptian God. Was this guy for real? Sun Ra was very much for real.”

For the CD version, Peterson picks personal favourites, classics and unreleased tracks and weaves them into a flowing piece across 2CDs, showcasing the incredible variety of Ra’s work. Alongside the familiar tones of ‘Love In Outer Space’, the modal classic ‘Sleeping Beauty’ and a heavy version of ‘We Travel The Spaceways’, he brings in the off-kilter croon of ‘Dreaming’, a 45 given to him personally by the late John Peel, alongside an unreleased 1987 bossa take on ‘Astro Black’, the experimental dub ambience of ‘Adventure-Equation’ and the defiant anthem, ‘Blackman’.

The 2LP features full length versions of selected tracks from the mix while the digital version features a full unmixed selection with Peterson’s mix available within the album bundle. Sleeve notes on physical formats come from Gilles Peterson with a full Ra career biography by author Robert L. Campbell. The album also features previously unseen photos from the archives of Val Wilmer and Jorg Brecker alongside full musician line-ups and session details.

KEY POINTS:
– Exclusive selection from UK’s leading DJ for jazz-based music, Gilles Peterson
– strong, accessible introduction to Sun Ra’s music and a perfect complement to the Marshall Allen compilation on Strut from 2014

Enlightenment is…. our tomorrow… It has no plane…. of sorrow
Hereby, our invitation… We do invite you…. Be of our Space World
Sun Ra And His Intergalactic Research Arkestra ’Enlightenment’
Within their 1973 European tour, Sun Ra and his Arkestra had just completed
a residency at the legendary Gibus in Paris in October before travelling to
Amiens for a Sunday afternoon concert. Those filing into the city’s Maison de
la Culture that day would have little idea of the intense, visceral experience
that awaited them. “Sun Ra’s use of the Arkestra as his instrument in an
onslaught of sound, colour and movement stimulated and even shocked the
senses and the shakras of audience participants onto a higher plane of spirit
consciousness,“ explains the Arkestra’s Knoel Scott.
On Side 1, the session kicks off with the theatrical overture, ’Enlightenment’ as
Sun Ra and vocalist June Tyson invite the audience to “be of our space world“.
Ra then moves into a rare instrumental version of ’Love In Outer Space’,
transforming the perennial Arkestra classic into a raw, ritualistic experience:
“this was a vehicle for the Arkestra’s space dancers. Close your eyes and
imagine them writhing across the stage in celestial homage,“ explains Scott.
Side 2 of the album opens with the glistening ’Lights On A Satellite’, a feature
for the spiritual tenor sax of John Gilmore, playing in unison with trumpeter
Kwame Hadi. Closing track, the epic, chaotic, anxious ’Discipline 27-II / What
Planet Is This’ moves from abstract, freeform keyboard work from Sun Ra to
a walking groove as Sun Ra and June Tyson take a thinly veiled psychedelic
swipe at life on earth: “If this is a planet of life, why do people die here? “
Following 2014’s landmark compilation presented by Marshall Allen, ’In the
Orbit Of Ra’, Strut and Art Yard join forces once more for the first release
anywhere of ’Planets Of Life Or Death’. Recorded direct from the sound

Sun Ra And His Arkestra – In The Orbit Of Ra
Tuesday, September 16th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Sun Ra And His Arkestra – In The Orbit Of Ra

Image: 1591412 “Sun Ra said he came from Saturn, because white America treated him like an alien, like a creature from outer space, so he became one, an anarcho-emperor of the fantastic, who made it to the moon before America or Russia, because the moon was nowhere near as far out as he could really go.“ Paul Morley

Strut and Art Yard join forces for a special release to mark what would have been Sun Ra’s 100th birthday with ’In The Orbit Of Ra’, a new collection curated by the longest serving member of the Arkestra and current bandleader, Marshall Allen. Bringing together Ra highights from over 25 years of music, the album is the first internationally released compilation to provide an introduction to the music of Sun Ra, curated personally by the Arkestra and mastered from the original tapes.

With a catalogue of well over a hundred albums, Sun Ra forged his own direction in music from the mid ‘50s until his passing in 1993, injecting space age cosmic philosophy, ancient Egyptian history and lyrical poetry into a unique and freeform jazz sound. His music evolved constantly with relentless rehearsals, live gigging and recording schedules, developing a second-sense chemistry with his fellow Arkestra band members. Together, their emphasis would often be on improvisation and “the moment”, constantly re-interpreting and evolving their sound. Elements of magic and ritual would regularly feature in their performances and would lend the Arkestra a mystical aura. As Sun Ra himself said, “I have many names, some call me Mr. Ra, others call me Mr. Re. You can call me Mr. Mystery.”

For this exclusive new collection, Strut join forces with Artyard to gain access to the inner sanctum of the Arkestra. In addition to the track selection, the release features recollections and contributions from some of the core Arkestra line-up including Marshall Allen, Michael Ray, Knoel Scott and Danny Ray Thompson. For the music, Allen’s selection takes us through the huge variety and intricacy of the Arkestra’s work covering the ‘60s to early ‘80s, from the celestial blues of ‘Spontaneous Simplicity’ and ‘Plutonian Nights’ to the urgent jazz of ‘Rocket Number Nine Take Off For Planet Venus’ and ‘Dance Of The Cosmo Aliens’. The album features an exclusive previously unreleased Sun Ra track from the Art Yard archives, the acoustic ‘Trying To Put The Blame On Me’ recorded live in Rome in 1977, along with a previously unreleased Part 1 of ‘Reflects Motion’ from 1962 and an unheard extended version of ‘Island In The Sun’ from the late ‘60s.

‘In The Orbit Of Ra’ is released on 2CD, 2LP and digital formats. Physical formats feature full interview with Marshall Allen along with rare and previously unpublished photos by Val Wilmer.
