Various – Inner Peace (Rare Spiritual Funk & Jazz Gems)
Friday, June 30th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Inner Peace (Rare Spiritual Funk & Jazz Gems)

Image: 1609761 WEWANTSOUNDS are back with a superb selection of Spiritual Jazz and Funk grooves from legendary Producer BOB SHAD’s Mainstream Records catalogue. Many sought-after tracks here have never been reissued and will delight all the crate diggers worldwide.

Bob Shad was one of the greatest music producers of the 20th century, having worked with all the music giants you can think of, from Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie to Sarah Vaughan, Lightnin’ Hopkins, The Platters and Janis Joplin to name just a few. “Bobby Shad was a legend in our family” says his grandson Judd Apatow who, together with his sister Mia, still looks after Shad’s back catalogue, Mainstream Records.
Like his peers, jazz producers Creed Taylor and Bob Thiele, Shad went independent in the 60s and by the early 70s, he was producing a string of superb albums mixing Spiritual Jazz with Funk and Soul. These albums are now being rediscovered by new generation of Soul and Jazz lovers hooked on the music of Kamasi Washington and Shabaka Hutchings.
Recorded between 1971 and 73,  the Fender-Rhodes-drenched tracks on INNER PEACE showcase Shad’s unique Deep Jazz sound. They feature such revered musicians as Harold Land, Roy Haynes and Frank Foster, together with a younger generation of talented musicians led by Buddy Terry, Dave Hubbard and LaMont Johnson.
Here they are accompanied by the cream of 70s jazz session musicians including Bernard Purdie, Buster Williams, Eddie Henderson, Mtume, Stanley Clarke, and Cecil Bridgewater.
The Mainstream catalogue has been sampled by a long list of revered DJs and Hip Hop producers over the years. Roy Haynes’ ‘Senyah’ was sampled by De La Soul on ‘Pony Ride’ and Shelly Manne’s short outro, ‘Infinity’ forms the unmissable backbone of Jeru The Damaja’s all-time Hip Hop classic, ‘Come Clean’. A fitting tribute to the supreme sound of producer Bob Shad.
Wewantsounds will start a reissue program of original Mainstream albums with bonus material and rare photos from the vaults. Look out for more

Image: 1609089 “The only time you wear a Tuxedo is when it’s time to party.”
So says legendary West Coast player Snoop Dogg on the opening track
of Tuxedo II. The blessing of the Doggfather is of special importance to Mayer
Hawthorne and Jake One, whose second album as a duo finds them at the
forefront of a new wave of gangster boogie – one that owes as much to G-funk
as P-funk. This is the territory of pre- and post-hydraulic low riders: a mélange
of Cali boom-bap, analog synth bass and elegant disco that resonates truth
and authenticity in an era where so many are faking the funk.
Bonding over a shared love of Chic, Parliament, and the other signs in the
greater funk Zodiac, Mayer Hawthorne (Aquarius) and Jake One (Taurus)
were early predictors of the sea changes that American music would undergo
in 2016. Their first release in March of 2015 debuted at #1 on iTunes
America’s RnB charts, christened as “Dance Floor Catnip” by the Boston
Globe, and “Pure disco-funk hot fire” by Okayplayer. Considering their
individual successes (Mayer’s four solo albums, Jake’s production work for
the likes of Drake, Future, The Weeknd, and De La Soul) and five GRAMMY
nominations between the two of them, it’s no surprise that their powers
combined have yet again yielded a bevy of absolute slappers that are
packaged perfectly for dance parties in 2017. The material here, while wholly
original, is an exercise in honoring its forebears. Tuxedo’s II recalls the future
funk wobble of Zapp, Gap, Jam/Lewis and Junie Morrison, while nodding
lyrically to Mtume, Jodeci and Cameo. The crystallization of the album’s
concept comes courtesy of its message of universal love, thanks to the
signature combination of soul and pop sensibility that have come to define
Mayer’s hooks.
“You gotta do what you love…” says Mayer in a recent interview with
Nordstrom’s style blog, one of the many fashion outlets to cover Tuxedo’s
rise. After all – the transcendental ritual of the party and the rippling self
affirmation of the funk are of one spirit: the spirit of self-love…of self
expression. Tuxedo II is a modern testament to unity and positivity in trying
times. It is a reminder that the dance floor will always be there to welcome
you, whoever you are.

Harleighblu x Starkiller – Amorine (LP+MP3)
Wednesday, September 28th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Harleighblu x Starkiller – Amorine (LP+MP3)

Image: 1606643 Harleighblu X Starkiller is a formidable link-up between British soul/electronic singer Harleighblu and LA duo Starkiller (the production outfit of C.E. Garcia & Alfredo E. Fratti, members of Adrian Younge’s Venice Dawn). A science fiction film in sonic form, the ‘Amorine’ LP tells a tragic future love story in which high drama collides with a cool, clean, sci-fi atmosphere via hip hop sensibilities that draw on musical references from psychedelic funk to DJ Shadow to Portishead.

In the distant future, society is given a drug called “Amorine” to lull them into submission, and suppress all emotions.

We follow a young girl named Joanna, a citizen of a giant metropolis, who, due to a meeting of chance, has been struck by love at first sight: a young artist named Giraud, a resident of the lower levels of the city, has caught her eye, and she has become victim to what she thinks is an emotion known as “love,” but is unsure.

In attempts to feel the full effects of this newfound “emotion,” she confronts the boy, and convinces him to stop taking the drug. As the influence of the drug wears off, they both fall madly in love with one another.

In the midst of their romance, Joanna becomes ill, and Giraud takes her to a machine that allows them to see inside of her. There they discover that her entire body is nothing more than machinery, and without the drug in her system, she will die. Joanna comes to the realization that if she begins taking Amorine to save her life, the love felt for Giraud will be forgotten, and that she would rather die than forget her lover.

Given only 12 hours to live, the two spend every moment together. When the time finally arrives, they make their way to the highest point of the city, take hold of one another’s hand, and leap to their death.

On impact, Joanna awakes in a laboratory full of others just like her, she has been placed back online and is now faced with the harsh reality that with Giraud being human, she has lost him forever, and will have to exist in a world without him.

Low Leaf – Palm Psalms: A Light To Resolve All Darkness
Friday, September 9th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Low Leaf – Palm Psalms: A Light To Resolve All Darkness

Image: 1606283 As her 1st official self-release under her own label, Creator DIY, Low
Leaf has produced a distinguishable record that not only establishes
her prowess as a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, but
also demonstrates her ability to execute her vision as a completely
self-sustained artist in a lane all of her own creation.
Inspired by Psalm 57:8 which reads, “Wake up, my heart! Wake up,
O lyre & harp! I will wake the dawn with my song”, Palm Psalms is
a collection of compositions written to plant seeds of light and truth
within the soul of the world. Rooted in an experimental approach to
singer-songwriting, the record is organically held together with all live
instrumentation and free form orchestration. Low Leaf’s strongest
and most resolved work yet, her songwriting on the harp, keys, and
guitar are supported by live string arrangements, eclectic rhythms,
analog synths, and soaring wind instruments that guide the listener
though her
universal lyrics, and uplift one to a state of hopefulness and divine
connection.
Low Leaf shares her most refined album to date, which explores
uncharted territory with the electric harp in contemporary music,
blended with her signature style of unrestricted experimentation
and natural ear for songwriting. Palm Psalms is truly a milestone of
a record in Low Leaf’s ever-evolving repertoire- one that distinctly
shines as a unique and authentic light throughout the musical
landscape of today, and of all time.

The Seshen – Flames & Figures (Coloured LP+MP3)
Friday, September 2nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Seshen – Flames & Figures (Coloured LP+MP3)

Image: 1605876 ‘Flames & Figures’ is the second full-length album from The Seshen, whose forward-thinking sound combines synthesizers, drum machines, live percussion and entrancing harmonies for an unmistakable fusion of R&B, synth-pop and electronic music. The long player sees the band on the cusp of a new era, two years in the making, the album marks an evolution in The Seshen’s unique sound.

Full of bright synth swells, infectious bass lines and thumping 808 beats, their music is a counterpoint to lead singer Lalin St. Juste’s lyrical stream of consciousness, ‘Flames & Figures’ explores themes of femininity, power, illusion and loss as she draws on both her personal experiences and the world of her imagination.

The San Francisco Bay Area-based seven-piece are led by Lalin St. Juste and bassist/producer Akiyoshi Ehara. The duo is joined by five remarkable bandmates to create their multidimensional music: vocalist Kasha Rockland, drummer Chris Thalmann, keyboard/synth player Mahesh Rao, percussionist Mirza Kopelman, and sampler Kumar Butler. Through their much-talked-about live shows, and three releases to date (2012’s self-released, eponymous debut LP, and the ‘Unravel’ and ‘Unravel Remixes’ EPs on Tru Thoughts), their distinctive music has gained support from the likes of Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq, Don Letts and Tom Ravenscroft (BBC 6Music), Jason Bentley (KCRW/NPR), OkayPlayer, Earmilk, The Line of Best Fit and Clash.

Fadoul – Al Zman Saib (LP+MP3)
Friday, October 30th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Fadoul – Al Zman Saib (LP+MP3)

Image: 1600587 8 tracks of raw Arabic funk music, none of these have ever been reissued before. So far Fadoul (or Fadaul, or Faddoul, the transcribtion of his name to latin letters differs)& his music had not been rediscovered, as a matter of fact most of those songs still left no trace whatsoever in the world wide web. It took us 2 years and countless trips to Morocco to find the artists family to license the release from them. Vinyl and CD edition come with liner notes, unseen live photos and lyrics translations.

From the press release:
“There was one record in particular that caught my attention. It was by a band called „Fadaul et les Privileges“ and mentioned James Brown in the writing credits of the song „Sid Redad“ on the a-side. Needless to say my expectations were high. The first time I heard the record I was blown away. A cover of James Brown’s „Papa got a brand new bag“ sung in arabic and backed by a rawly recorded three piece band. It’s hard to describe the music without having listened to it, but as time went by I somehow ended up summarizing it as Arabic funk played with a punk attitude. A description, that I feel, comes fairly close. Soon I became obsessed by the record but nobody seemed to know anything about the vinyl or the artists, even google didn’t help. A true gem forgotten about through the passages of time. I kept on traveling to Morocco trying to find infos about the artists, which did not end up being fruitful during the first couple of trips. What kept me going was the fact that over the course of the next years I kept on finding different records by Fadoul, in the end a total of four. They all had the raw sound aesthetic of „Sid Redad“. Energetic performances, a mighty voice and a very lively atmosphere that was preserved in the recordings.”

“Sid Redad” has gotten plays on BBC, Radio Nova and more, our Habibi Funk mixes habe been featured by The Guardian, Radio Nova, Waxpoetics, okayplayer.com, konbini.fr and many more.

JR & PH7 (Ft. Chuuwee) – The South Sac Mack
Friday, June 5th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on JR & PH7 (Ft. Chuuwee) – The South Sac Mack

Image: 1596524 Chuuwee and JR & PH7 Pay Tribute To Sactown with The South Sac Mack. JR & PH7 and Chuuwee are pleased to announce news of their collaborative LP, The South Sac Mack. The project brings the German production duo together with the Sacremento spitter for 17 breezy tracks that epitomize the sound of the new West. The South Sac Mack will give listeners a street level perspective of Sactown, and will be available on all formats on March 24, 2015, from Below System Records.

This is not the first time that both producers have aligned their production talents with Chuuwee. After hearing about Jorg & Peter through a close friend who has worked with them in the past, Chu began an email exchange that eventually led to them working together on multiple songs. 2012’s “Travelin”, “It Is What It Is”, and “Just Like SAC” not only allowed for them to create music for their fans, but also to develop a rapport that forged their chemistry for, SSM. Unlike other bonds between their contemporaries, Chu and JR & PH7’s ties grew stronger organically, and not in hopes of chasing a check, these characteristics reflect beautifully on the album.

With a background in soulful Boom Bap, the album manages to blend ’90s fundamentals, with a twist of West Coast sensibilities. The final product is a hybrid, perfect for the modern day head that stands out among most contemporary Hip-Hop works. Thematically, the decision to name a handful of tracks after neighborhoods throughout Sacramento, gives the listener a first-person narrative, that puts themselves in the shoes of Chuuwee, as they get to experience Cali’s capital city. Tracks like the stream of consciousness driven “Meadowview Morning”, which describe the area as a microcosm where everyone’s actions are connected, and “Meanwhile Off Mack”, which creates a “Me Against The World” scenario between the protagonist, and those around him through its memorable chorus, allow us to see Sacramento in a unique light. This particular theme is continued on tracks such as the Blu assisted “DueYuu”, “James Rutter (Swim Center)” and “Florin High Flirt”, where Chuuwee highlights the various spots that have all played a role in developing the person that he is today. Conversely, joints such as the rough around the edges “Riverside Ransom,” show that Chuuwee can throw down some gully bars when needed, further showcasing the multitalented efforts of both the rhymer, and production duo.

In terms of crafting the perfect sound for Chuuwee to speak his mind, fostering an organic work flow was the most important aspect for this album to take shape ” We just wanted to create a sound that we feel goes well with Chuuwee and the story he is telling on the record,” say the European beatsmiths. “The whole process was super smooth, and we let it flourish naturally based on the subject matter and the overall scope of the album,” they conclude.

For such a broad album that both manages to highlight Sactown’s features, through Chuuwee’s words, and JR & PH7’s lush soundscapes, The South Sac Mack succeeds in transporting us to the midst of the 916.

“Sometimes a beautiful view of a sunset comes with a price, as told by Sacramento emcee Chuuwee’?¦” – Mass Appeal
“It’??s been a minute since we last checked in with Sacramento emcee, Chuuwee, on some solo sh*t. Well, make no mistake about it, dude’??s bars are still top-notch ‘?? let this new LP serve as the proof.” – Okayplayer
“With many of the tracks named after Sacremento neighborhoods, the album will give listeners a street level perspective of Chuuwee’s surroundings through the sounds of the “new West.” – DJ Booth
“Chuuwee’??s ridiculously smooth Cali flow and wordplay is exactly the sort of style that, combined with his liberal use of Sacramento references and imagery, are setting him up with the groundwork a young emergent rapper needs to become recognisable.” – ACCLAIM Magazine
“Edited with digitally imprinted noise for a VHS appearance, the video [“Meanwhile off Mack”] here harps back to the days when emcees made videos with what they could get their hands on.” – HotNewHipHop
“The pair offers a breath of fresh air as far as hope in real Hip-Hop is concerned, and their work is beyond worthy of checking out if you are unfamiliar.” – RESPECT Magazine
“Well, this time the guys from Germany and Denmark are working together with emcee Chuuwee, and it’??s another collaboration to be excited about.” – The Find Mag

Potatohead People – Big Luxury
Friday, April 10th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Potatohead People – Big Luxury

Image: 1595339 Working on opposite sides of the landmass we call Canada, Vancouver/Montreal duo Potatohead People (producers Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical) have been making waves for quite some time with their signature jazzy boom-bap meets boogie inside the bassbin vibes. Called a “formidable tandem” by OkayPlayer, their sounds have been championed early on by the likes of Kaytranada, Soulection, Nightmares on Wax, Pomo, Exmag, Big Boi, and Phife Dawg. After a few early releases on Vancouver based netlabel Jellyfish Recordings, Brooklyn’s Bastard Jazz reissued their 2012 landmark Kosmichemusik EP and pressed a 7″ released on Valentine’s Day 2013. The association landed their song “Back To My Sh*t” (featuring Frank Nitty of Frank’n’Dank) on a Powerade produced LeBron James documentary and Nick and Astro began working on a debut LP for Bastard Jazz, presented here.

Big Luxury draws from influences disparate as classic jazz, prog rock, disco 90’s hop, DJ Shadow-Era downtempo beats, alongside modern influences like the Brainfeeder crew and new electronic sounds coming out of Nick Wisdom’s adopted hometown of Montreal. What’s resulted is a finely honed, extra buttery album that effortly glides between tempos, but never loses the mood. The album also features a whole host of guest vocalists – J Dilla’s younger brother Illa J, legendary Canadian MC Moka Only, New Zealand’s Sorceress, and Amalia all provide contributions to the sounds within. Big Luxury is a velvety ride through vibes and a magnificent debut for these talented young Canadians.

Image: 1592148 Music is an exchange of ideas. This album is something for those
exhausted with the shuck and jive of pop culture, who believe in
the purification rituals offered by hard snares, funky drum kicks,
soul-coughing bass, and deeply rooted vibrations.
Steadfastly infusing their songs with spirituality and positivity,
yU and Slimkat are everymen with preternatural talent. Over the
years, they’ve tirelessly built a rep in the DMV, collaborating on
yU’s The Earn and Before Taxes, which OkayPlayer called “one
of the best hip-hop albums released in the last few years.” In 2009,
yU released In the Ruff as the philosophical heart of super-group
Diamond District, a record hailed by MTV as “arguably the best
hip-hop ever released in D.C.”
Slimkat supplies the beats that make the blood rush to your head.
Named one of the best producers of 2010 by KevinNottingham.
com, he’s dished countless production dimes to the likes of
Muhsinah, Eric Roberson, Diamond District, and more.
The People of Today is a seamless and head-spinning record. It’s
hard-boiled beats and raps laced with wisdom and virtue. The sort
of record that you can sit with today and tomorrow, and any time
you need to be reminded that we’re all in this together.

Blu – The West
Thursday, July 10th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Blu – The West

Image: 1589035 Ever since he burst onto the scene in 2007 with the widely acclaimed Exile collaboration Below The Heavens, L.A. rapper Blu has been hailed as the most promising up-and-comer hip-hop has seen in years. With his cool L.A. demeanor and intricate lyrical musings, Blu blew a breath of fresh air into a stale SoCal hip-hop scene, leading hip-hop tastemakers like HipHopDX and XXL to name him one of the genre’s top newcomers. After releasing further collaborations with Detroit’s Ta’Raach and L.A. producer Mainframe, Blu was rumored to be entertaining offers from several major labels.

After laying low for a while, Blu‘s musical output exploded in 2011. First he dropped a retail version of his classic love-themed mixtape Her Favorite Colo(u)r, which HipHopDX declared as “a worthy third solo album in a flawless catalog.” Then he came out of nowhere with his first newly recorded material in 2 years, the jaw-dropping Jesus (featuring collaborations with Madlib, Alchemist, Planet Asia, Hezekiah, and more). Lastly, he put his beats on display with the production album Open, getting verses from buzzworthy MCs like Sene, Fresh Daily, ScienZe, and Versis (plus a couple from himself) and earning a rare 90/100 review on Okayplayer. With his ultra-busy 2011 nearly in the books, Johnson Barnes is nearly ready to unleash his biggest album yet, the highly anticipated NoYork! If the recent past is any indication, he has nothing to worry about. Available from 20.06.2014

Ikebe Shakedown – Stone By Stone
Thursday, June 5th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ikebe Shakedown – Stone By Stone

Image: 1588106 Ikebe Shakedown’s powerful instrumental soul takes “big unison horns, slinky bass lines, tight little guitar licks—and blends them with tasty grooves culled from ’70s-style horn-driven funk (WNYC Soundcheck).” The Brooklyn-based collective is set to follow up their well-received self-titled debut album with the heavier, more mature sound of their second full-length Stone By Stone.

The self-produced album was recorded at the famed “House of Soul” Daptone Studios in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Notes bassist Vince Chiarito, “Thinking of all the great music that has come out of the Daptone Studio really pushed us to refine our songs and grow as a band. It was really inspiring to record there.” The band adds that, “Stone By Stone is a much more layered and arranged album. The self-titled debut captured the raw energy of us playing live and the new record is much more of a studio effort. Psychedelic textures weave in and out of the grooves while the horn section offers an explosive response. The songs are heavy and danceable and show our moodier, more melodic side.”

The seven-piece band—named after a favorite Nigerian boogie record and pronounced “ee-KAY-bay”—formed in 2008 and has developed a mighty horn section anchored by tight, deep-pocketed grooves. Following 2009’s debut EP Hard Steppin’, the band released their self-titled debut full-length LP on Ubiquity Records in 2011 that Okayplayer called “an adventurous trip through time” and “one of the best releases of the year.” Their music has also been featured on a number of television shows and commercials including HBO’s Eastbound and Down, Mini Cooper and Vans.
