Posted in For Facebook, Magazine, News | Comments Off on Numero Group’s breathlessly anticipated 50th mainline release chronicles the sound of Minneapolis

In the late 1970s, a peculiar sound began bubbling up from the land of 10,000 lakes. Buried beneath 50 solid inches of annual snow, Minneapolis made a Sound quite different than what the pop world foresaw. It issued forth as a slick, black, technologically advanced fusion, poised to storm the charts. Never known for sizable […]

Not a resurrection, but a rebirth. The Numero Group’s 2006 release “Good God! A Gospel Funk Hymnal” examined what seemed to be a conundrum: gospel singers performing pious gospel songs, and devoutly, but doing so amid hot, sweaty, earthy sounds drunk on the same moonshine downed by any blues singer thumbing his way up north […]

Hüsker Dü – Savage Young Dü (3CD+Book)
Friday, September 29th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Hüsker Dü – Savage Young Dü (3CD+Book)

Hüsker-Dü-Bassist Greg Norton: “Hearing this stuff for the first time in a couple of decades, I [was] realizing the historical significance of what we were doing at the time”, erklärt er. “Of course, at the time, we were a bunch of kids playing rock ‘n’ roll in the basement. But the potential that Hüsker had showed right out of the gate.”

“We created this blistering wall of sound – bright white radio static with occasional melody.” – Bob Mould
“It was like rolling down a hill aware of the bumps, but focusing on blowing people’s minds and completely wearing out the audience.” – Grant Hart
“We didn’t know what hardcore was. We just got up there and played real fast and loud.” – Greg Norton
Package details:

Jackie Shane – Any Other Way (Ltd. Deluxe 2CD)
Friday, September 8th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Jackie Shane – Any Other Way (Ltd. Deluxe 2CD)

Various – Seafaring Strangers: Private Yacht (2LP)
Saturday, May 6th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Seafaring Strangers: Private Yacht (2LP)

Image: 1610011 The Numero Group’s dive into the deep end of America’s private press continues. Having battled the witches and wizards of Darkscorch, the outlaws of Cosmic Americana, and traveled alongside Ladies From the Canyon and their Lonesome Heroes, it’s time to take it easy.

With pop music’s volume knob adjusted for deflation in the early ‘70s, softness begat smoothness. Crewmen arrived from the worlds of jazz, folk, rock, and soul, all peddling a product that was sincere, leisurely, and lofty. A sound that was buoyant, crisp, defined. Sometimes classified as West Coast—and, later, Yacht Rock—the compass points of our Private Yacht expedition are the blue-eyed harmonies of Hall and Oates, the cocaine-dusted Fender Rhodes of Michael McDonald, and the combover strums of James Taylor. Here, at the glassy apex of rock’s softer side, 20 strong swimmers are gathered together. An album for both relaxation and reflection, where listeners can enjoy the present, a cool breeze, and a taste of the good life.

Available from 14.10.2016

Image: 1605531 Teeming with the energy and grit of pre-Giuliani Manhattan, Blonde Redhead’s long out-of-print early recordings have finally crawled their way out of the ‘90s basement thanks to Numero Group who will issue the set on Sept. 30. Weighing in at 37 tracks, Masculin Féminin compiles the band’s first two albums for Steve Shelley’s Smells Like Records (self-titled and La Mia Via Violenta), their period singles, extant demos, and radio performances across four LPs or two CDs. Dozens of previously unpublished photographs illustrate two lengthy essays on this essential New York band’s formative years.

This is the latest installment in Numero Group’s 200 Line series which has also included releases from Unwound, Bedhead, Codeine, White Zombie and The Scientists.

“These songs combine a raw need, a ready access to neediness, with seemingly incongruous cinematic changes reminiscent of ‘60s Italian pop music and movie scores. They switch between emotional grandeur and eye scratching immediacy.” -Arto Lindsay

Image: 1599478 Where in the mythos of punk is there room for a frizzy-haired cinephile San Diegan? How could the defining rock attitude and look of the late 1970s get brainstormed by two go-nowheres from a boarding school in Hockessin, Delaware – a D student and kidvoted Most Unknown by his senior class? Forget the worn-out yarns about London gobbers and safety-pin piercings – the true story of the birth of punk rock on 45 is the story of Ork Records, captured by Numero Group on four hefty LPs (or two shiny compact discs) and told across 120 high-gloss pages (184 for the CD) filled with insider photos and sordid details. It is a story populated by iconic names like Television, Alex Chilton, Lester Bangs, Richard Hell, the Feelies, Patti Smith, Talking Heads, Brian Eno, Blondie and the Ramones. And it’s a tale told from the hallowed grounds of CBGB, Max’s Kansas City, and Ardent Studios. It all began with Terry Ork, a Jewish SoCal film nerd enthralled by Andy Warhol’s posse as they made a transgressive surfing flick, who moved cross-country to manage a movie memorabilia shop on the grubby streets of the Lower East Side. Made in the shadows of disco and dereliction in late-’70s Manhattan, Ork Records: New York, New York is not just the genesis of punk, it is the birth of the New York City scene and indie culture as we know it.

Fred Williams – Tell Her / The Dance Got Old
Saturday, January 17th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Fred Williams – Tell Her / The Dance Got Old

Image: 1594815 This record is as good as soul gets, no argument, more than the sum its parts, the perfect moment captured. Few records are coveted by so many rare 45 collectors as Fred Williams only outing on Solo records, hence a clean copy recently changed hands for £3000

I first heard this in the early 2000’s when hardcore US Collector Dante Carfange & Chad Weekley (Memphix records) came to Edinburgh to D.J at our weekly club ‘Motherfunk’. After their U.K tour many deepfunk collectors went after the single but the record has remained elusive.

Dante Carfange went on to compile the amazing Numero Group Compilation ‘Eccentric Soul: Smart’s Palace’ which included both these sides. After meeting Rob and Ken from Numero Group in Edinburgh last year they kindly agreed to licence Fred Williams to ‘Athens of the North’ as a single so here we are at last, this amazing piece of music is finally affordable on vinyl. Just buy it.

1. Tell Her

Various – South Side Story (RSD)

Image: 1588040 For the lowriders, the souleros, or just anyone with a still-working CD player in their hooptie and a penchant for driving with even a slight gangster lean. Numero pays tribute to the aftermarket sounds of “sweet” soul music still emanating from the West coast, or East Side, depending on your perspective. Inspired by, and paying tribute to the countless cruising compilations, legitimate and (mostly) otherwise, that provide the soundtrack for lowrider and soulero culture, South Side Story is the latest in the Numbero line of takes its aesthetics from the timeless East Side Story series, and its music from Chicago soul groups (mostly, of course, from our mythic South Side). Included here are songs that are completely unreleased, others that are never before issued other than in minuscule pressings on 45, and a few chrome-coated classics, already seen on scads of flash-in-the-pan boots. The Numero Group’s crack team of researchers cut loose on the city of Chicago to assemble the perfect lowriding companion, and the results are unparalleled. From high school rivals The Si-Berians and The Intentions, who both feature their sole recordings here, to unheard material from the original Calvin Harris, to the elite Latino ensemble known as The Mystics, to the missing link in “sweet-as-sugar” Renaldo Domino’s lonely post-Twinight recording, this dazzling collection slices out a delectable cross-section of the city’s sweetest sounds. 13 perfect “souldies” as they are occasionally called, allowing you to throw away any of your many volumes of Gangster Soul Harmony, Lost Soul Oldies, East Side Story, Hood Dreams, Shady Side of Town (or any of the thousands of other similar iterations) Available from 19.04.2014

Unnatural Funk Band – Strange Happenings / Living In The Past
Friday, December 27th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Unnatural Funk Band – Strange Happenings / Living In The Past

Image: 1585549 A few years removed from their 1970 Damon Studios session in Kansas City, Bump & The Soul Stompers, led by Jerald “Bump” Scott, responded to their era’s off-kilter naming conventions to become Unnatural Funk Band. After failing to find a label home for “I Can Remember,” they made the descent into neighboring Independence, Missouri’s fabled subterranean Cavern Studios, erected inside the mouth of an actual limestone fissure. “Living in the Past” is a nostalgic drift through wistful falsetto and low-riding narration, while “Strange Happenings” is truly exceptional: an unnaturally good funk workout from a virtually undocumented Kansas City soul act. This previously unreleased pairing was unearthed, with assistance from “Bump” Scott himself, during the Numero Group’s KC-focused research for 2013’s Eccentric Soul: The Forte Label collection.

Tracklist:

1. “Strange Happenings”
2. “Living In The Past” Available from 06.12.2013

Calvin Harris – Love’s Recipe / Wives Get Lonely To
Thursday, December 26th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Calvin Harris – Love’s Recipe / Wives Get Lonely To

Image: 1581464 Previously unreleased, this 1972 pair of Calvin Harris’ masterfully crafted Earl Wiley-produced sweet soul demos might’ve stayed totally unknown, if it weren’t for Ed Cody’s devious forethought. An engineer at Chicago’s Stereosonic facility, Cody duped himself a submaster reference copy of the complete session. In ’73, Wiley heard “Love Won’t Pay The Bills” on 45—credited to a group called Elevation—and instantly recognized the Cody-engineered track as his own. Nearly 40 years later, through Numero Group research into Stereosonic, Cody, and Wiley, a cache of Cody masters presented themselves for new evaluation. The alternately buoyant and sobering odes to domesticity reproduced here finally grant honey-voiced Harris and the talented Wiley their long-deserved due.

Tracklist:

1. “Love’s Recipe”
2. “Wives’ Get Lonely Too” Available from 06.12.2013
