The Heliocentrics’ debut album, Out There (2007) was a confounding piece of work. Drawing equally from the funk universe of James Brown, the disorienting asymmetry of Sun Ra, the cinematic scope of Ennio Morricone, the sublime fusion of David Axelrod, Pierre Henry’s turned-on musique concrète, and Can’s beat-heavy Krautrock, Out There pointed the way towards […]

Brian Auger – Back To The Beginning Again: Anthology Vol.2
Friday, October 21st, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Brian Auger – Back To The Beginning Again: Anthology Vol.2

Image: 1606148 Brian Auger, the London born keyboard genius & musical pioneer, lauded and loved by everybody from Herbie Hancock to Mose Allison, from the Brand New Heavies to The Beastie Boys, whose tracks have been sampled by Mos Def, Common, Air and Kid Loco, and his original compositions covered by Sarah Vaughan, Richard ‘Groove’ Holmes and he is the proud recipient of a US Congressional Award For Services to Jazz!

Since the 2015 release of volume one of Back To The Beginning – The Brian Auger Anthology, it’s fair to say that a whole new audience of fans and taste makers have joined the massed ranks of music lovers who were already aware of this great mans incredible, pioneering music and career that now spans over 50 years. After more sell out tours of the US, UK and Europe in the last 12 months, magazine features and an epic, 2 hour interview with Gilles Peterson on BBC 6 Music – more people than ever now grasp what a genre busting, pioneering artist Brian is.

This second volume brings together not only remastered classics from Brian’s’ career, but also super rare, and previously unreleased tracks. Check out his blistering jazz piano tracks from the early 60’s including Poinciana and Work Song, the barely known, late 60’s Hammond organ & big band versions of jazz standards Moanin’, Sister Sadie, and the incredibly gritty version by The Trinity of Jimmy McGriffs’ MG Blues, and the Big John Patton penned Funky Mama! The version of Miles Davis’ All Blues featuring Trinity vocalist Julie Driscoll needs to be heard to be believed.

As well as Oblivion Express perennials such as Straight Ahead, Inner City Blues and Happiness Is Just Around The Bend (Brians original composition, made famous by Cuba Gooding Seniors The Main Ingredient) there is also a demo version of Black Octopus, featuring The Headhunters Mike Clark & Paul Jackson, recorded in Brians’ Bay Area garage after Herbie Hancock split that equally groundbreaking group.

You will also be swept away by Ella, the rare track Brian wrote and dedicated to his wife of nearly 50 years – and you will no doubt be up on your feet when checking out brand new, previously unreleased live versions of Whenever You’re Ready and Freedom Jazz Dance, featuring original Oblivion Express vocalist Alex Ligertwood – recorded on 2015’s epic and triumphant European tour and released here for the very first time.

Back To The Beginning..Again is a fantastic collection that demonstrates why Brian Auger is considered legendary.

K.A.A.N. – Uncommon Knowledge
Saturday, May 7th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on K.A.A.N. – Uncommon Knowledge

Image: 1604053 25 year old, Howard County, Maryland native, Brandon Perry also
known as K.A.A.N. (pronounced Kon) has the talent and qualities to
once again write a new chapter in the rap instruction manual. When
your moniker is an acronym for “Knowledge Above All Nonsense”
(K.A.A.N.), hip hop is going to hold you accountable. Accountability
and credibility are not only evident in K.A.A.N.’s music, but equally
obvious in his work ethic and output. In a short time span, as he
has been honing and developing his craft in real time, the rapper
has organically amassed tens of thousands of followers across
numerous social media platforms and consistently generated
hundreds of thousands of plays via soundcloud and youtube from
his multiple projects. Some of the biggest names in the industry have
extended admiration and support of K.A.A.N.’s movement. Cosigns
from Chuck D, features on NPR, and regular performances on both
US coasts are among the many stripes the newcomer has earned.
His vinyl debut entitled Uncommon Knowledge on Redefinition
Records adds another notch to his belt, in that K.A.A.N.had the honor
of working exclusively with legendary music producer K-Def (Real
Live, LL Cool J, Ghostface, Diddy) for an entire EP. Listening to him
rhyme may remind an experienced hip hop head of rap’s greats and
while K.A.A.N. respectfully gives credit where due when speaking
of his influential mc’s, he attributes just as much of his inspiration to
his fandom and study of artists from other genres including Nirvana
and Johnny Cash. The old saying goes, “Knowledge is Power”, yet
for such a popular catchphrase, common sense is still arguably
uncommon. Leave it up to K.A.A.N. to take intelligence from rarity to
readily available for the masses.

K.I.D. – Don’t Stop / Do It Again
Friday, April 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on K.I.D. – Don’t Stop / Do It Again

Image: 1603737 NYC’s legendary SAM Records dropped the mysteriously named K.I.D.’s “Don’t Stop” in 1981. It has it all – Trancey arpeggios, Vocoders & vocals trading off with each other, Brass & some heavyweight Disco drums that helped propel it forth into the hallowed category of “club classic”. The record perfectly suited the open minds and open ears of discerning disc jocks in locales such as New York and Chicago where this sublime piece of electronic Disco sleaze would get plenty burn on the city’s infamous WBMX thus having a huge impact, along with a whole host of other similar records, on the burgeoning house scene that was germinating in the fertile mid western soil. “B-Side” cut “Do It Again” is a pleasant enough early 80’s Disco jam, but compared to the futuristic burner that is “Don’t Stop” on the other side there’s one clear winner. A must have for all Cosmic, Disco, Funk aficionados. Now made available again, legitimately licensed, remastered and reissued in conjunction with SAM Records New York City.

Image: 1599104 FOF present the sophomore album Now I’m Ready from Keep Shelly In Athens.

Tracklist:
1. Fractals
2. Silent Rain
3. Now I’m Ready (ft. Ocean Hope)
4. Line 4 (Orange)
5. Benighted
6. Hollow Man
7. Nobody
8. Hunter

Born in the midst of a creative surge in the pop-leaning underground,
Greek act Keep Shelly In Athens have been a force in the indie world
for the last half decade, releasing projects on Cascine, Gorilla vs. Bear
label arm Forest Family and British heavyweight Planet Mu. Now, the
Athens-based duo arrive on Los Angeles outlet Friends of Friends with
the ‘Now I’m Ready’ LP, their second official LP and their most
emotionally mature, sonically adventurous effort to date.
At eight songs and 45 minutes, the album strikes a concise, yet
imposing figure, each individual effort comprised of enough peaks and
valleys to bring the listener to the edge and back again. Lifted off by
lead single “Fractals”, Now I’m Ready is not your typical indie effort,
un-beholden to tempo and style, the album skips across genre tropes
with ease, each track guided by producer R??’s singular aesthetic and
vocalist Myrtha’s unmistakable crescendos.
And whether you’re locked into a long road trip, careening around a
city or looking over the Mediterranean, Keep Shelly In Athens bring an
arresting pathos to the proceedings, felt everywhere from the
breakbeat-led madness of “Hollow Man” to the ever-building, hypnotic
vocal qualities of “Now I’m Ready”. It’s only the duo’s second official
LP, but considering their release history on outlets as diverse as
Cascine, Forest Family and Planet Mu, it’s no surprise that their arrival
on Friends of Friends is such an unabated success.

Key Points:
• “Fractals” (debut single from Now I’m Ready) reached #1
on Hype Machine charts
• Press support from NPR, Pitchfork, The Guardian,
Gorilla vs Bear, Stereogum, Noisey and more
• Previous live performances include Coachella, Fun Fun
Fun Fest, Parklife Festival, Corsica Studios, Bowery
Ballroom, Roxy Theatre and more
Press Quotes:
• “They’ll make you happy to feel sad.” – The Guardian

soundtracking all the lingering yearning and regret of your

Mind Vortex – Against The Grain EP
Thursday, April 9th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Mind Vortex – Against The Grain EP

Image: 1596513 After the release of their ‘Colours’ EP in 2014, Mind Vortex have switched up a gear and are now rolling forward with even more intensity. Presenting yet another four slabs of sonic-attitude, they’ve solidified their mark in Ram’s roster and are this time coming for the jugular. If you were looking for the same pent-up aggression as ‘Hotbox’ and ‘Gravity’, Mind Vortex are not here to disappoint.

Title-track ‘Against the Grain’ serves as the perfect entrée. Pulsating subs are underpinned by quickening drum patterns, which pull you against a baying tide. Snapping against booming kicks and elevating into an exploding crescendo, one which is meticulously planned. Mind Vortex have shifted the drum & bass paradigm, by merging different stylistic patterns demonstrated even within the EP’s very first track.

Rolling out next with quick fire beats and the intimidating growl of Evil B is ‘Bigger than that’. The MC leads you into a construction line of chaos, crafted by funk driven basslines and breaks which are bulging at their seams. Weighty, menacing and instantly grappling your attention, it’s a sure-fire club anthem… One which has already ignited dancefloors.

With longing piano notes steppily taking you through its introduction, ‘Curve Ball’ throws you headfirst into a midst of infectious synths and fluctuating key patterns. A driving anthem, yet one which takes its time to methodically build segments, the track stays true to its name. Constantly throwing you jauntily into different directions, this is demonstrative of Mind Vortex’s ability to hold you by the ears. There’s no stopping this pounding riddim, it beholds a pulse to keep you dancing.

Then finally, comes ‘Stand High’. Daniela’s vocal delights take you through a journey between breaks, elevated with each beat pattern. Again, Mind Vortex epitomises their command over every nerve in your body. Aboard vocal crescendos, risen by elevating synths you’re baited by each hook and snared almost too easily. It’s the perfect accompaniment to three already hard-hitting stompers… Proving Mind Vortex’s versatility, a trait which is sure to see them explode in the next twelve months.

TRACKLISTING:

1. Against The Grain
2. Bigger Than That (feat. Evil B)
3. Curve Ball
4. Stand High (feat. Daniela)

They left Otis in 1960 to work in and around Los Angeles. In the early 1960s Marie did two solo sessions for small L.A. Labels which went unnoticed. Image: 1588977 Following the dazzling debut 12″, Crumbs hit us with another stunner! Although delivering a mysterious & scantily clad 12″ is hardly a novel concept these days, it does concentrate the mind (and feet) on the music more than the brand.

It’s undercover time again, and we’re sworn to secrecy, of course…but three producers of considerable note contribute here

Tee Mango rides some seriously wig flipping synth lines over an irresistible tropical groove that just builds beautifully into a bona fide ‘moment’ on the floor On the flip we’re treated to two solid gold Soulful extensions: Allenby Chilton takes on a little known Etta jam, amplifies the Funk elements and transforms the song into an altogether more heavyweight workout.

Finally Fence take on a rare late 70’s psychedelic Soul tune, again adding some 21st century wide-screen sonics and dancefloor dynamic

Shawn Lee – Golden Age Against The Machine
Tuesday, May 20th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Shawn Lee – Golden Age Against The Machine

Image: 1588336 Golden Age Against The Machine is a total passion play. A living audio love letter to The Golden age of hip-hop. For Shawn this spans the early 80s to mid 90s. Like many other musicians, sample based production effected him deeply. It permeated the how and what of his musical performances. The sonic qualities of his productions, the arrangements and his drumming, in fact his whole approach. Hip-hop at it’s best was fresh raw and unconventional. There is something magical about grabbing a loop from an old funk record and layering it with some strings from an easy listening record and pitching down a horn stab from a jazz record and a guitar lick from a psych rock Record and then pinning it down with a fat beat!!! Shawn loves the pick and mix aesthetic of hip-hop music. His personal connection goes back to the early 80s, playing live accompaniment on drums vamping on Chic’s Good Times while budding rappers would pass the mic doing their bedroom rhymes. A year or 2 later, playing Rufus’ Ain’t Nobody while b-boys break danced to it. From there, he moved on to programming beats on Linn drums, Dmx’s, SP 12 & 1200’s and MPC drum machines. Not to mention, he is the same “Shawn Lee” that made all those drum break records back in the 90’s. So he’s not new to this, simply true to this!!!
In terms of inspiration, Prince Paul and De La & and his old friends The Dust Brothers producing the Beastie’s Paul’s Boutique, laid down the gauntlet/blue print for sample based productions. 3 Feet High still stands tall for him after all this time. For Golden Age he employed a similar mind set for much of the album except for not using samples. He played everything from scratch, this includes every one note stab, lick and drum beat. Every little nugget a production in it’s own right. It certainly kept him busy and was a rewarding process. “There ain’t no school like the Old School Y’all “… This is Golden Age Against The Machine. Sure shot!!!!

Unknown – Itaque Putant / Timento

Image: 1588043 Although delivering a mysterious & scantily clad 12″ is hardly a novel concept these days, we must confess to being more than a little excited when we heard this one !

It’s undercover time again, and we’re sworn to secrecy, of course…
What we do know, however is that this mighty release is an absolute dancefloor sureshot !

Made up of two long, pitched down and utterly mesmerising workouts kicking off with Itaque Putant, a mid-tempo, tripped out Disco number that marries elements of Techno, late 80’s Balearia and more than a nod towards classic Red Zone dubs. Super low subs and bags of melodic atmosphere conspire to provide a perfect ‘dancing under the stars’ moment

On the flip Timento is a lysergic, tribalistic epic, stitching together a series of ethnic ingredients and overlaying some seriously transcendent modern synth candy. Building into the soundtrack for a full blown shamanic vision !

A serious platter then, and when the music’s this good, who needs more ? Available from 04.04.2014
