Deluxe – Polishing Peanuts EP
Sunday, July 7th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Deluxe – Polishing Peanuts EP

Image: 1581732 Established in 2007, the group started as five musicians armed with a bass, a vintage piano, an MPC, a guitar and a saxophone they quickly improvised an urban quintet and seduced passers-by on the sidewalks of Aix-en-Provence. Thanks to this street band experience DELUXE acquired the spontaneity and frenzy that comes out in their on-stage performances and exudes in their compositions. They are the most talented mustachioed since Tom Selleck!

Polishing Peanuts is Deluxe first EP on Chinese Man Records label. The band gained with the EP high exposure on big French TV and radios, even before its release!

The 6-track EP invites you to discover Deluxe’s energy and eclecticism that compose its musical world. Craftily mixing hip-hop with soul, funk or jazz… the five mustachioed accompanied by their singer Liliboy, with a smooth but explosive voice, exploit an unexpected ground in-between live performance and electronic compositions.

” Includes Deluxe remix of Chinese Man’s “Racing with the Sun”, Exclusive track to the 12″
” Their track “Mr Chicken” has been synched in the blockbuster movie “Fast and Furious 6” AND on the official soundtrack album.

Talibam, Matt Nelson & Robin Stabinsky – Hard Vibe

Image: 1610947 ESP-Disk present two albums, HARD VIBE & Endgame of the Anthropocene from wild NY Crew Talibam

Track Listing:
A1. Infinite Hard Vibe Pt. 1
B1. Infinite Hard Vibe Pt. 2

Personnel/Credits: Matthew Mottel: Fender Rhodes, synthesizer, Matt Nelson: tenor saxophone, Kevin Shea: drums, Ron Stabinsky: Hammond B3 organ, John Olson (Wolf Eyes):
Overview: Talibam! delights in creating music that cannot be pinned down within the safe-spaces of existing genres. With each new album, Talibam! reinvents their methodological
palette in order to bolster a fresh clarity of joyous auditory surprise, something their fans have come to depend on. Talibam! focuses on compositional clarity, with reverence for their diverse interest in genre. On this new album they push the pulse of Motorik rhythm through a Psychedelic Jazz filter. This time out, they have created a sonic edifice so
radical, so intricate in its density, that additional hands were required to bring it to life, thus was born the Talibam! Hard Vibe Band with Matt Nelson (Battle Trance, tUnE-yArDs) and Ron Stabinsky (Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Peter Evans Quintet, Relâche) joining Mottel (CSC Funk Band, Alien Whale, Nymph, Platinum Vision) and Village Voice “Best
Drummer in New York” Shea (Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Rhys Chatham, People featuring Mary Halvorson). The scientists in the Talibam! laboratory describe the results thusly: The HARD VIBE composition transforms aspects of rhythm changes into a disciplined sequence of minor key modulations to create a rigorous Hard Vibe obstacle course for
the soloists over a tight melodic/rhythmic grid. Inspired by Herbie Hancock’s ’70s cosmic music, long-form repetitive works such as Miles Davis’s On the Corner, Charlie Parker’s “Salt Peanuts,” Tenor Sax endurance soloists, Albert Ayler’s New Grass, the legendary organ brutality of Larry Young, and the NYC Avant-Garde Rock Minimalism of Rhys Chatham
and Glenn Branca, Hard Vibe maintains an infectious pulse with virtuosic structural jazz improvisation. The Jan Hammer/’80s soundtrack-inspired Keytar payoff (second half of side B) brings festival audiences to its feet in epic dance and ripping solo proportions.

But those are inspirations more than ingredients. As we at ESP-Disk’ are fond of saying, “You never heard such sounds in your life.”

Press Quotes: “Talibam! manage to cast themselves as a powerful rhythm section… It’s pretty cool to hear the Manhattan abstracters create such a cool free jazz/free rock hybrid” – Byron Coley

“Co-conspirators Matthew Mottel and Kevin Shea have something in common with John Coxon and Ashley Wales of Spring Heel Jack in their application of multiple instruments, electronics and collaborators to create an eclectic musical milieu.” – Derek Taylor

“This is wildly new music, fresh in its approach to the collision of melody, harmony and rhythm that makes for quite a soup for the songs to swim in.” – Raul d’Gama Rose
“Amid the fun and exuberance a clever brain and a strong heart of integrity beats.” – Lisa Thatcher Available from 22.09.2017

Bud Powell – Birdland 1953
Friday, August 7th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Bud Powell – Birdland 1953

Image: 1598773 Overview:
Bud Powell ranks as one of the most influential pianists in jazz history, his style having provided the template for
innumerable bebop pianists who followed in his wake. This newly compiled and mastered three-CD set captures Powell
at his peak on his home turf at the famed Birdland club, recorded onsite (these are not air checks), and mostly working
with top-notch sidemen such as Charles Mingus, Oscar Pettiford, Roy Haynes, and Art Taylor, along with guest
appearances by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Producer Michael D. Anderson fixed pitch problems and personnel
listings that have plagued previous versions of some of this material from the collection of Boris Rose as issued on other
“arguably the largest pianistic influence to appear after the war….As a soloist, Powell owned a superhuman technique
that allowed him percussively to pop syncopated accents out of long lines of eighth notes, often at blindingly fast
tempos. By doing so, he was able to deliver jazz’s characteristic accenting, its rhythmic DNA, into a more complex
musical universe, rhythmic patterns that might have appeared 10 years earlier as big-band riffs showed up in Powell’s
work as the accented notes in long, serpentine melodic lines.” – Tom Piazza, The New York Times

Image: 1584233 Polishing Peanuts DELUXE’s first EP (November 2011) opened the door & created a buzz about the band’s future projects. The 3 first tracks that came out in spring, started to tease the audience’s interest, especially Daniel the EP’s title track (out on May 13th) & the crazy video who came along with it. The long awaited LP drops on September 16th 2013, and goes by the sweet name of The DELUXE Family show.

This first album reflects the maturity acquired by the band during the years, full of tracks as diverse & breathtaking as the fellows mustaches. The jazzy touch, trademark of the band’s first discographic adventures can be found on tracks Extra Mile & Bleed On, Indisposed (feat. Cyph4) & Pretty Flaws are melancholic & dreamy ballads, whereas Family Show & Baby (feat ASM) are hip hop bangers. The LP travels through different styles, it also features several mc’s (Tumi on Too Me, Taiwan Mc on Blocked) and surprises the ears by easily skipping from dub step fuelled rock & roll vibes, to sweet & sour ballads, and even funky disco sounds. With eclecticism, assumed diversity and an urge to tell a story, DELUXE invites his listeners to immerse in this first album’s universe, grooving, moving, bouncing, a real musical melting pot with various horizons.

Deluxe – The Deluxe Family Show
Thursday, October 10th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Deluxe – The Deluxe Family Show

Available from 20.09.2013

First Word Records are proud to present the debut album from Mike-L, the fantastic “On A Columbo Tip”. Following on from other First Word releases this year, Mike-L has crafted an album that shares the dusty-fingered, crate-digging sound of Herma Puma with the unashamedly retro style of The Simonsound’s “Reverse Engineering”. Mike’s been with First […]
