Night Hawks / Scott Woods – Chicken Grabber/ Chicken Rock
Sunday, March 31st, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Night Hawks / Scott Woods – Chicken Grabber/ Chicken Rock

Image: 1579714 Something of a poultry offering here as we ransack the coop to pull out these two Chicken-based oddities. On the top side is the Nite Hawks (a very early incarnation of the Crusaders – yes them of ‘Street Life’ success and ignominy) with their wondrous, slinky instrumental number ‘Chicken Grabber’, a jazzy, bump and grinder punctuated by frenzied clucking from the hens and deranged muttering from their unknown pursuer. Made infamous by its appearance in John Waters’ notorious schlock-fest ‘Pink Flamingos’, ‘Chicken Grabber’ is surely one of the best songs about chicken ever made. That might seem a weak claim on the face of it, but then just consider the hundreds, perhaps thousands of other records inspired by our fowl feathered friends, and then consider that on the flip-side of this little rooster, we serve up Scott Wood’s ‘Chicken Rock’ – another rock & roll curio with a decidedly unhinged air, and another of the very best chicken sides ever waxed. Pomrad – Knights (2LP+MP3)
Friday, April 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Pomrad – Knights (2LP+MP3)

Image: 1603658 Following up on his critically acclaimed „This Day“ EP, Pomrad (BE) debuts his full length with On And On Records (FRA) & Jakarta Records (GER) worldwide this summer.

Pomrad a.k.a. Adriaan Van de Velde has lots of Funk in his colorful trickster bag. Just check out the title track „Knights“ of his album: its beats chug like the wheels of a locomotive and electrifying synth solos guarantee the best brain freeze you’ve ever felt. He could be your favorites producer, favorite producer with Lefto & Mr. Carmack among his fans.
His debut album “Knights”, a collection of razor sharp keyboard licks, phat electro grooves and thick funk, following up on his EP release, which received radio support from MistaJam (BBC Radio1), Alex Nut (Rinse FM) & Lefto (Studio Brussels).
British tastemaker Gilles Peterson included one of Pomrad’s tracks on one of the influential Brownswood Electric compilations. Future funk heroes Teeko & B.Bravo did the same for their second Tempo Dreams compilation.
Now, Knights exceeds these expectations and transcends the aforementioned comparisons, taking a leap into the unknown. Pomrad clearly has found his own voice. Because, yeah, there’s postmodern retrofunk behind ‘City lights’ (a true gem!) and ‘Rush Hour’ & also, you’ll find a couple of talented soul singers hiding inside Pomrad’s cotton candy fantasies. Like Belgium’s blue eyed soulstress Selah Sue or Sylvie Kreusch of indie darlings Soldier’s Heart.
You want some cosmic funk, Herbie Hancock style? You got it. Need some of that Hudson Mohawke-ish beat madness? Or the kind of talkbox vibes that Zapp was known for in the eighties? The Pomrad experience includes them all.
Just having finished his own Boiler Room Set in Brussels, Pomrad will be playing live Festivals all over Europe this summer including but not limited to Dour Festival (BE, July).

Join two of BBE’s most prolific artists and compilers, Mr Thing & Chris Read on a voyage into the mysterious, strange and wonderful world of Library Music, courtesy of Cavendish Music. Founded in 1937 and originally known as Boosey & Hawkes Recorded Music Library, Cavendish Music is the largest independent Library Music publisher in the UK and also represents a host of music catalogues across the globe.
During the Library Music heyday of the 60s and 70s, thousands of original instrumental tracks were produced across a broad range of genres for companies like Cavendish, who then created vinyl and tape collections, often arranged by theme or mood, for their customers in radio, television and film. Cult British TV shows such as The Sweeney and The Professionals as well as documentaries and feature films relied heavily on these catalogues, and companies like KPM, De Wolfe and Boosey & Hawkes went a long way toward defining the sound of British popular culture at the time. Never commercially available, music created for these libraries that never made it to the promised land of TV or Radio was destined to languish in
Cavendish Music’s vast London vault, only recently unearthed by a new generation of DJs and producers searching for rare gems or a perfect sample.
Mr Thing & Chris Read were first invited to examine the contents of the Cavendish Music archive in 2014 as part of WhoSampled’s ‘Samplethon’ event in which producers created new tracks against the clock using sample material mined from the catalogue. Whilst digging through box upon box of records and tapes looking for interesting sounds, the pair also discovered a host of 70s library music which has not only stood the test of time, but deserves to be heard in its original form.
From dramatic big band numbers reminiscent of Lalo Schifrin’s film scores to atmospheric proto-hip hop instrumentals produced before the genre’s existence, right through to fairly straightforward jazz and funk cuts, this amazing collection of music is sure to inspire and delight DJs and beatmakers the world over. Nick Hook – Relationships (Colored Vinyl)
Friday, February 24th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Nick Hook – Relationships (Colored Vinyl)

Image: 1608473 Nick Hook is NYC’s waviest resident: an in-demand collaborator, producer extraordinaire, and all around provider of vibes who’s lent his touch to projects from Run The Jewels, Young Thug, and countless others, all while building a creative community around his studio, thespacepit, in Greenpoint. Now the redheaded kingpin steps forward with his Relationships LP on Fool’s Gold, a 16 track album of collaborations that are unconventional, unexpected and all-the-way live (literally: each song was recorded in-person with Nick behind the boards, a refreshing move in the email verse era).

Featuring a festival-worthy lineup of new school rap upstarts (21 Savage, Novelist, ILoveMakonnen) and fellow beat radicals (Prefuse 73, Hudson Mohawke, the late DJ Rashad), Relationships isn’t just the world’s greatest party guestlist, but a chronicle of Nick’s year long, after-midnight vision quest—the sound of a producer breaking through the chrysalis, killing the ego, and raising the bar. Strut present the definitive collection of singles released by Sun Ra across his illustrious career, spanning 1952 to 1991. Released prolifically during the 1950s and more sporadically thereafter, primarily on the Saturn label, the 45s offer one-off meteorites from Ra’s prolific cosmic journey, tracing the development of his forwardthinking “Space-Bop” and his unique take on jazz and blues traditions. The collection is hugely varied, ranging from Ra’s spoken word recitations and his early work with Chicago vocal groups to the different phases of his Arkestra, small group and duet recordings. The singles are also unpredictable vehicles for Ra’s music, combining different tracks from different sessions and occasionally making available music which was recorded many years beforehand.
As with his LPs, most 45s were only pressed in small runs and have since become extremely rare and sought after. Only a small handful of copies of ‘Love In Outer Space’ b/w ‘Mayan Temple’ and ‘The Blue One’ b/w ‘Orbitration In Blue’ have ever been seen, some have only been discovered in physical form in recent years, some were planned and pencilled but allegedly never made it to vinyl (including ‘Saturn’ and ‘Velvet’ from the Jazz In Silhouette LP) and some appeared as limited one-off magazine singles and posthumous releases, including ‘Hell #1’ aka ‘Out There A Minute’.
The set is the most comprehensive collection of Ra’s singles to date. Sleeve note writers Francis Gooding and Paul Griffiths brilliantly illustrate the role of the single within Ra’s career and break down each release with detailed track by track notes. Working with Sun Ra LLC and Sun Ra archivist Michael D. Anderson, Strut has also assembled the best possible master sources for each track.
‘Singles’ will be released on CD and LP formats across two release dates. Both formats feature fully remastered tracks, rare photos, original 45 artwork, Francis Gooding’s extensive sleeve notes, an interview with Saturn Records founder Alton Abraham by John Corbett and detailed track by track and session notes by Paul Griffiths.

KEY POINTS:
– first definitive collection of Sun Ra singles, including all Saturn releases, planned singles, posthumous releases and magazine giveaways
– Remastered by Technologyworks including exclusive tape transfers from the Sun Ra archive
– 45s box sets include many singles reissued on 45 for the first time since their original
release. Presented in their original label artwork
– All formats include rare photos and sleeve notes by Francis Gooding. Extensive track by track notes and session details by paul Griffiths
– official release prepared in conjunction with Sun Ra LLC

The next episode of DJ Kicks comes from Jackmaster. The Numbers cofounder and charismatic Glaswegian delivers an honest journey, unearthing a serious passion for the obscure boundaries of house and techno. “The mix is influenced heavily by how I used to DJ at the first party I ever promoted, named Seismic, and another named Monox which was a straight up techno night where I was a resident from the age of 17. And although it wasn’t my plan, it turned into a kind of tribute to the cities that really formulated me as a DJ: Detroit, Chicago and Glasgow.”

Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno – 1000 Watts (2LP+MP3)
Friday, May 6th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno – 1000 Watts (2LP+MP3)

Image: 1603850 ‘1000 Watts’ is the third album from the tropical reggae- and dub-infused Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno project. This outing sees musical explorer Will “Quantic” Holland making a more concerted foray into pure reggae-roots territory, although flashes of Holland’s Colombian influences still shine through. A sun-drenched record, the LP is charged with atmosphere and a fitting tribute to dub music’s evolution.

Drawing together a set of classic style rhythms for the dancefloor, ‘1000 Watts’ was recorded direct to tape, with all the band members in the same room, for this outing, Holland enlisted his most prestigious roll-call of guests yet. Alongside Jamaican dub legend U-Roy and long-time collaborator Alice Russell, the featured artists include popular reggae singers Hollie Cook and Christopher Ellis, the late, great keyboard maestro Ikey Owens (whose tragic 2014 passing followed a career working with everyone from Run The Jewels to The Mars Volta to Jack White), and legendary Jamaican drummer Santa Davis, known for his work with the likes of Bob Marley and The Aggravators.

Now based in New York, after almost a decade living in Colombia, British producer, musician and band-leader Quantic has enchanted fans and tastemakers with more than 15 albums in as many years. Seeking out and working with some of the world’s most influential players, he has been instrumental in opening up audiences in the UK and elsewhere to countless rhythms and. ‘1000 Watts’ continues a thread of releases as adventurous as they are classic.

Various – Tom Furse Digs
Friday, July 24th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Tom Furse Digs

Image: 1598529 Tom Furse Digs – Nineteen exotic musical gems from the Southern Music Library.

Tom Furse of The Horrors has long been known as a man of taste and distinction, so it comes as no surprise that he should follow in the steps of such musical adventurers as Luke Vibert and Barry 7 to create a collection of library music that is both esoteric and charming.

All tracks were picked from the Southern Library Of Recorded Music, a little known music library with a breezy and surreal sound. Like a Rousseau painting there is that sense of the exotic but also something ‘other’. That’s not to say it’s not the ideal beach soundtrack for a person of discerning taste, but it could just as easily be the haunting backdrop to an opiated evening or deep reverie.

The tracks were recorded between 1968 And 1979 and feature some of the library greats like Nino Nardini, Roger Roger and Johnny Hawksworth but also more obscure composers such as Anthony Mawer and Harihar Rao. Although the songs were recorded at different times, in different places, there is an unmistakable feeling that sets them apart from other library music. This is the also first time many of the tracks have been made widely available and great care was taken to find the best available recordings.

But why not let Tom have the last word and tell us what he digs and why.

‘Oh the curious world of library music, so tempting in the record shop and often so disappointing on the turntable. However there are gems here to be found, shining and unique oddities, the bastard sounds of pop fancy.

The Southern Library of Recorded Music, to give it’s full name, largely sits away from what has become known as the ‘library sound’. Instead of sample-friendly beats and mutated versions of chart hits, there is something here that’s all together different. A world of exotica-tinged jazz beat, calling up images of of sandy days and smoky nights in tropical climates. Despite the geographical and cultural differences of the composers featured, there is undeniably ‘a sound’ here all of it’s own. Admittedly this is after a lot of filtering on my part, but such was my task and no stone was left unturned to find the diamonds amongst the rough. ‘Digs’ is my take on the Southern library, and I hope you enjoy it’.

TRACKLISTING: Side A – 1. Beachcomber – Chris Gunning, 2. Several Shades Of Blue – Johnny Hawksworth, 3. Bass Guitar Stroll – Johnny Scott, 4. Poltergeist – Roger Roger, 5. Soothsayer – Nino Nardini, 6. Everglades – Barry Forgie, 7. Great Organ Beat – Johnny Scott, 8. Temple Courtyard – Harihar Rao. Side B – 1. For Joan To Dance To – Eugene Cines, 2. Various – Music For Dancefloors – KPM Music Librar
Thursday, April 18th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Music For Dancefloors – KPM Music Librar

Image: 1579367 This April, Strut reissues one of the early releases from its catalogue in a brand new
Deluxe Edition. Music For Dancefloors is a varied journey through the archives of the
fabled and historic KPM Music Library.
The phenomenon of the music library is unique, involving brilliant but anonymous
composers and musicians creating short pieces of music to be made available for
background use in film, television, and radio. The music wasn’t intended to be enjoyed
in a home listening context, and in fact wasn’t available for commercial release at all,
but the sheer quality of the playing and compositions resulted in the music finding an

enthusiastic audience. Original promotional-only vinyl releases from KPM and other
libraries of the 1960s and 70s (generally from print run of only 1,000 copies each) can
now exchange hands for a small fortune.
During its heyday, many pieces recorded through KPM became perennial UK TV
themes – long-running programs like “Grandstand,” “Mastermind” and “ITV News At
Ten.” Tellingly, the KPM boss during this period, Robin Phillips, made a point of setting

the bar high, bringing in the UK’s most talented young composers, arrangers and
session players to the studios to ensure the highest quality music.
The quality has justifiably stood the test of time. In recent years, DJs and collectors
have coveted volumes of the anonymous green label KPM LPs as a source for hard-tofind
grooves and breaks, and KPM has become a well-mined source for hip-hop
producers
and music connoisseurs – Jay-Z, DOOM, Madlib and Guilty Simpson,
Dangermouse
and Action Bronson are among the many who have plundered KPM

grooves.
A KPM piece (Kieth Mansfield’s “Funky Fanfare”) even graces the opening

of
Quentin Tarantino’s film Kill Bill.
Compiled by ex-Jazz Cafe booker and DJ Adrian Gibson and Strut’s Quinton Scott‚
Music For Dancefloors was originally created as a series of albums in the early 2000s
dedicated to mining the archives of the UK’s foremost music libraries. Volumes on
Chappell music and Bosworth would follow in 2001 and 2002. This first installment
mines the KPM reels for some of the most in-demand, funkiest and quirkiest pieces
from the library. Some have become classics in their own right: Alan Parker’s ”That’s
What Friends Are For” featuring Blue Mink’s Madeline Bell on vocals, Alan Hawkshaw’s
stomping hammond groove “Senior Thump” (a precursor to his work as The Mohawks),
and Keith Mansfield’s “Crash Course,” a driving jazz anthem. Elsewhere, the tracklist
is peppered with oddities like Klaus Weiss’ incidental downtempo mood “Morning 1 /
Morning 2” and Nascimbene’s “Witchdoctor,” a short tribal field recording.

This new edition features an exclusive bonus disc, which makes available for the first
time the debut gig by the KPM All-Stars, bringing together many of KPM’s greatest
composers for a unique night at London’s Jazz Cafe on 27th April 2000. A big band
comprising original and contemporary KPM library musicians and writers, including
Alan Hawkshaw, Keith Mansfield and James Clarke, perform the library’s best-loved
TV themes and cult dancefloor classics for the first time anywhere since the original
sessions. Within the set, Alan Hawkshaw plays the live debut of tracks from his album
The Champ by The Mohawks including the fabled title track, as well as “Senior Thump’
and “Landscape.”
Music For Dancefloors: The KPM Music Library (Deluxe version) is released in three
formats: 2CD (original studio recordings and live concert), 2LP featuring the original
studio recordings and 2CD insert of the full CD content, and digital (original studio
recordings and live concert). The album features the original sleeve notes by Charles
Waring (Mojo magazine) alongside extra photos and memorabilia.
