Biosis Now & Afro Train – Bahamas Tropical Funk Vs Ivory Coast Afro Funk
Wednesday, September 20th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Biosis Now & Afro Train – Bahamas Tropical Funk Vs Ivory Coast Afro Funk

Image: 1612055 After Mukatsuku Records summer Hammond Organ screamer from Billy Hawks (MUKAT 052) the label goes deep on an international funk tip. Few years ago label manager Nik played in France and the promoter pulled out a Biosis now 45 that he never knew existed up till then and was generally thought to be a long album track only. An extensive search revealed nothing online including popsike/discogs/ebay except a tropical seller who’d just bought a huge caribbean collection with the record included saying he’d never seen it before either and he was keeping it…Failing to secure a copy themselves the label licensed it instead and created their own 45 edit which retains all the funk & soul of the elongated album version into a 7 inch friendly format. On the flipside and 1973 Tumba Safari from Afro Train get’s a funky afrobeat re touch for peak time club play that would save you several hundred pounds on an original if you could actually find a copy !

Tracklisting
1. Biosis Now – Independent Bahamas V’s Ivory Coast Afro Funk (Nik’s Mukatsuku Edit)
2. Afro Train – Tumba Safari (Nik’s Mukatsuku Re-Edit)

Ojeda Penn – Lost Funk & Disco Gems Vol.6 : Official EP
Friday, August 19th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ojeda Penn – Lost Funk & Disco Gems Vol.6 : Official EP

Image: 1605776 As part of our 10 years anniversary Mukatsuku is proud to release the holy grail instrumental long version co produced by Tommy Stewart of ‘Brotherson’ from Atlanta USA resident Ojeda Penn.

There were two versions of the album Happiness on the IFE independent label. They looked almost identical but the first version contained the now rarer elongated jazz fused instrumental version of ‘Brotherson’ and then a few months later they recut the album with a much shorter version adding strings and vocals.

The former version is now being sold up to £500 so this 12 is a welcome release to the reissue market. According to Mr Penn this is the first time either version has been reissued officially and Mukatsuku after many years of discussion is glad to finally be in a position to finally put out both versions on one phat 12”

Tracklisting
1 Brotherson (Rare Long Instrumental Version)
2 Brotherson (Short Version With Strings And Vocals) Available from 07.10.2016

Marco Di Marco / Jazz Collective – Nik Weston Presents Two Sides Of Club Jazz
Thursday, November 27th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Marco Di Marco / Jazz Collective – Nik Weston Presents Two Sides Of Club Jazz

Image: 1594062 Two Sides Of Club Jazz does exactly what it says on the tin. Two club fillers from Italy & Japan. First up it’s a moment of funky modal madness from legendary Bologna pianist Marco Di Marco: ”Par Avion ” is a seminal jazz classic as championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson ,Nicola Conte & Patrick Forge. Swinging, floor-focussed foot-shoving, between the three elements (slink double bass, subtly brushed drums and Marco’s piano narrative) it’s a timeless example of jazz’s most alluring party guise. For the flipside we fast forward for a lush, lounge-languishing slice of smoky broken beat drama from Jazz Collective via Tokyo Japan with their masterpiece and charismatic ‘Velvet” with an exclusively recorded version for Mukatsuku Records.

Tracklisting
1. Marco Di Marco – Par Avion
2. Jazz Collective – Velvet (Unreleased Exclusive Version) Available from 05.12.2014

Loleatta Holloway,Ron Henderson & Choice Of Colour – Lost Funk & Soul Gems Vol.2
Thursday, September 18th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Loleatta Holloway,Ron Henderson & Choice Of Colour – Lost Funk & Soul Gems Vol.2

Image: 1592133 Volume two of Nik Weston’s Lost Soul & Funk Gems continues with a track from Loleatta Holloway who sadly passed away in 2011 . Loleatta was probably best known for her disco classics including ‘Hit & Run’ & the much sampled ‘Love Sensation’. In 1971 however she cut a dope club funk 45 cut for Fantasy sub label Galaxy with ‘Bring It On Up’ with soaring vocals, southern styled guitar and great brass and fatback drums. A perfect example indeed of 1970’s female funk . On the flipside an incredible super soul drenched previously album only gem ”I’ll Be Around ” from Ron Henderson And Choice Of Colour . The track appeared on the 1976 ‘Soul Junction’ LP on two labels Chelsea and Choice Cut but has never been before on a 45 single in it’s own right. Dramatic strings lead way to spine tingling vocals and arrangement to die for. This particular track has been in Nik’s top 10 tunes of all time for 20 years or so and been a labour of love to finally get it licensed and released on Mukatsuku Records for a new audience to enjoy perhaps for the first time who may not have come across these beauties before.

Tracklisting
1. Bring It On Up – Loleatta Holloway
2. I’ll Be Around – Ron Henderson & Choice Of Colour Available from 03.10.2014

Orlando Julius & His Afro Sounders – James Brown Ride On / Psychedelic Afro Shop
Friday, August 1st, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Orlando Julius & His Afro Sounders – James Brown Ride On / Psychedelic Afro Shop

Image: 1590666 The second limited edition 10 inch on the Mukatsuku label is from legendary Nigerian musician Orlando Julius who begun in the 1960’s fusing traditional African sounds and rhythms with those of American Soul & R & B. This single as a 10 inch includes two of perhaps his best funk tracks ‘ James Brown Rides On’ flipped with ‘Psychedelic Afro Shop’ with tough brass stabs, driving bass lines and irresistible, tough afro beat drums. We struggled to get hold of a mint original copy of the original 45 and when we did it was in an overly played condition coming from the collection of digger & DJ , Huw 72. We took the vinyl to Sean P known for his excellent sound restoration skills who begun painstakingly working with the files to bring the vinyl playback to something close of it’s original audio quality. It was a tough job. The original 7 inch bizarrely had both sides cut at 45rpm but both A & B sides ran to 6 and half minutes each which is extremely difficult to achieve when you consider that the original 45 was so damn loud. It’s worth noting that African pressings in general are often of a certain noisy quality. I’ve had sealed African records before that have never been played but sound like someone is frying eggs in the background when the needle hits the record!

Tracklisting
1. James Brown Ride On
2. Psychedlic Afro Shop Available from 11.07.2014

Various – Lost Funk & Soul Gems Vol.1
Thursday, July 3rd, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Lost Funk & Soul Gems Vol.1

Image: 1589361 Mukatsuku dig deep in the crates for the inaugural volume of their new Lost Soul & Funk Gems vinyl only series which casts it’s net across the globe to uncover some lesser known nuggets. Leading the way is the under played boogie funk soul disco masterpiece, ”You Gotta Let Go ” from Australian songstress Marcia Hines, originally released on her 1975 album Marcia Shines on Wizard Records. It’s super rare on a 45 and copies on separate Australian & Italian only 45’s fetch several hundred pounds when you can find a copy. On the flip a lesser know soul masterpiece of the much covered anthem “You Keep Me From Hanging On” from US legendary performer Jackie Wilson. Tingles down the spine aplenty as Jackie’s superb vocals nail this bonafide classic underpinned by a great big band arrangement and backing vocals. As far as we know this is the first time this version has ever been available as a single in its’ own right

Tracklisting

1. You Gotta Let Go – Marcia Hines
2. You Keep Me Hanging On – Jackie Wilson Available from 13.06.2014

Image: 1586528 Mukatsuku head honcho heard the ‘Ogun’ track from Iowa City outfit Eufórquestra (pronounced: yoo • FOHR • keh • struh, think Euphoria+Orchestra), on youtube several years ago bizarrely accompanying a 70’s soul train video .After contacting the label and securing a license the production team of GUYNAMUKAT (Guynamite & Nik Weston) finally set about with their own interpretation .For those who had perhaps fallen in love with the GUYNAMUKAT versions of the best selling afro beat monster featuring Kaleta on the label (MUKAT 014) a couple of years ago this picks up where that left off. Three versions are included here of Ogun … a dramatically shortened edit, an afro disco version plus a dubbed out more minimal disco version….Strictly limited 180 gram vinyl only.
