Jackie Shane – Any Other Way (Ltd. Deluxe 2CD)
Friday, September 8th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Jackie Shane – Any Other Way (Ltd. Deluxe 2CD)

Vinylmania: As classic disco came bounding through the late ’70s and into the
electronically orientated sounds of the ’80s, New York was one of the undisputed
frontiers for the latest developments in dance music culture, nightclubs and the
art of DJing. At the center of this seminal time for vinyl culture was a store
called Vinylmania, set up by Charlie Grappone in the heart of Greenwich Village,
Manhattan, just as the culture of 12-inch singles and promo copies was taking hold.
From supplying Levan, Tony Humphries and many more with the latest imports to
championing the emergence of house music in the mid-’80s, Grappone and his staff
played a significant role in New York’s own dance music story. Through the ’90s and
up until closing in 2007, Vinylmania was a store that catered to DJs from across
the complex mixture of racial, social and sexual demographics that made up New York
and its legendary nightlife.
Man Friday: As the NYC Peech Boys came to an end, Man Friday became Larry Levan’s
newest production project. Fronted by Kofi Morny and Brodie Williams, their dubut
single ‘Love Honey, Love heartache’ was released by Vinyl Mania in 1986 with Larry
Levan at the helm of the mix.
Love Money: In the spirit of most dance music borrowing elements from other sources,
‘Love Honey’ was heaviliy inpired by another Paradise Garage & Loft classic from
1980 and its remix in 1981 by UK Outfit Funk Masters / TW Funkmasters. A dubbed out
track big in the Jazz-Funk scene in the UK, it became a hit among underground
Deejays in Both NYC & Chicago.
Love Honey: No matter what list you look at. ‘Love Honey’ is always attached to
Larry Levan’s tenure at the Paradise Garage. All the elements of a Garage Track are
here, Dub Echoes, Synth Basslines, Percussions that linger, FX -that one can only
dream of hearing on a Richard Long System- and an Organ, because after all, they
say the Garage was like going to Church. Available from 12.08.2016

Various – Balearic Blah Blah Vol.7
Tuesday, March 3rd, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Balearic Blah Blah Vol.7

Image: 1595759 The land of Blah Blah delivers once again for the Balearic brigade – three new very classy edits all done by KBE. “Compass Woman” is a great edit of a track recorded in Compass Point Studios in Bahamas with the masters Sly & Robbie on drums and bass and the inimitable Wally Badarou on keys all topped with that world-famous harshly soulful male vocal. This was massive all over Europe in the early 80ties incl. Scandinavia, Ibiza and a firm favorite of Italians Loda and Baldelli – here it’s extended with newly added guitars for your listening pleasure. Flip over for “Great Times” an obscure, very hard to find, almost orgasmic Spanish female cover version of the Chic classic layered up with newly added rhythm guitars by KBE, cowbells, slick piano, all combined with powerful modern sounding drums – guaranteed to make people smile and a floor filler if played at the right time in any club. Lastly, “Sexomatic”, originally released as a 7” currently changing hands for big money, is an Italian bump with just the right amount of Mediterranean female vocals, floaty synths, funky keys and ultimately a unique song. A pure quality track that KBE felt deserved an extended edit, this has been on many DJs’ playlists and getting attention in various edits and dubs. More essential Blah Blah vinyl – don’t miss!

It traces the music from West Africa to London, adding elements of jazz, mambo and calypso along the way and paving the way for the afro sounds of the 1970s.

Accompanied by a 44 page CD booklet and 12 page vinyl booklet, the notes by Dr. Coester include rare photographs, labels and advert reproductions alongside some stunning and very rare recordings.

Tommy Guerrero – No Man’s Land
Saturday, June 28th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Tommy Guerrero – No Man’s Land

Image: 1588191 Musician and skateboarder, member of the legendary Bones Brigade, prolific artist & designer, the untamed kid of San Francisco haunt back our turntables with his new album “No Man’s Land”.

From dangerously rythmic dating under a dazing sun, to melodic oasis deliciously refreshing, “No Man’s Land” marks a change in the work of Tommy Guerrero : beyond the clever alchemy of ambient jazz tinged by hip-hop and soul, T.G. reveals a mastery of a typical style that becomes unique and eternal, where are unveiled enjoyment, fun and the raw talent of a mature artist who managed to preserve the purity of his childhood dreams.

BIOGRAPHY
Once upon a time, the City of San Francisco gave birth to an untamed beast named Tommy Guerrero. From a very young age, the kid could skateboard up walls and down hills like no one else. He played in punk rock bands well before he could even get into the clubs legally. And he displayed an artistry in life that few folks ever even fantasize about.
It’s 2014 and the guy’s resume reads like a dream- Bones Brigade skate team in the 80’s, movie appearances, co-founder of Real Skateboards and 40’s Clothing, art director for Krooked Skateboarding, and prolific recording artist- from the “Fat Jazzy Grooves” and “Another Late Night” compilations, to albums for Mo’Wax, Galaxia, Function 8, Rush [Japan], Quannum and Ubiquity, T.G. has lead a full life. Then there’s the collaborations with Lyrics Born, Jack Johnson, Curumin, Bing Ji Ling and Prefuse 73, remixes for Money Mark/Nigo, Poets of Rhythm and Shawn Lee. His band Jet Black Crayon has toured with Isotope 217 and Tortoise. He’s scored tunes for Thomas Campbell’s surf film “Sprout”, the EA video game “skate” and had the honor of being the sole provider of music for Todd Oldham’s show “Hand Made Modern” on HGTV. His songs have been licensed for zeitgeist television shows like “Queer as Folk”, “Sex in the City” and “CSI Miami”. His concerts packed houses from the Fujirock Festival in Japan to Café DuNord in S.F. and The Knitting Factory in N.Y.C. His designs are found on Levi’s in Japan, Vans shoes worldwide, and Sutro eyewear. Tommy’s music, like his graphic design, is beguilingly simple. He sounds like a guy messing around on his front stoop, and maybe that’s exactly what he is- but the result will touch you down to your toes. From Mission District punkers to Shibuya-ku hipsters- his melodies dance lightly around your head while the rhythms build under your feet. His is SOUL music, made by a street kid raised on Santana and Bill Withers (with more than a little nod to the Clash and Public Enemy in there, too). Available from 13.06.2014

Del The Funky Homosapien – I Wish My Brother George Was Here
Thursday, November 28th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Del The Funky Homosapien – I Wish My Brother George Was Here

Image: 87900 prod.by Del, Ice Cube & DJ PIn the early 90s hip hop took a turn and gangsta-style rap dominated, making waves off
the West Coast that rattled throughout the world. The East Coast’s dominance was
descending despite the success and positivity of Native Tongues acts like De La Soul
and A Tribe Called Quest, who favored thought-provoking humor and cleverness over
gangsta rap’s grittiness and grim outlook. It was in this landscape that Oakland, CA’s
Del The Funky Homosapien emerged in 1991, with his debut release
I Wish My Brother George Was Here.
Cribbing equally from the East Coast’s irreverence and wit, and the West Coast’s
P-Funk inspired production, (the album was produced by Del’s cousin Ice Cube) Del’s
debut has rightly been heralded as a benchmark album for underground hip hop.
I Wish My Brother George Was Here not only produced the underground classics “Dr. Bombay” and “Mistadobalina”
(#9 on the 1992 Hot Rap Tracks Charts), but also set the scene for the success of the other less gangsta West Coast
artists like The Pharcyde, Digable Planets, and of course Del’s compatriots in Souls of Mischief. Above all else, Del is
credited with injecting some much needed light-heartedness at a moment when it was truly needed.
Since his debut Del has gone on to work alongside Gorillaz, Wu-Tang Clan, El-P, Handsome Boy Modeling School, and
as a member of the acclaimed hip-hop supergroup Deltron 3030, and even with Dinosaur Jr.
Traffic Entertainment now presents I Wish My Brother George Was Here as a special double LP reissue, featuring the
original artwork, and all of The Funky Homosapien’s witty and innovative rhymes intact.

New Yorkers’ The Glass “Couples Therapy” EP came out earlier this year and created a wave of interest especially with DJs, bloggers and promoters. Since then they have been touring pretty much constantly and many of their tracks and remixes have been hitting the dancefloors hard.

Most of those remixes and some of their earlier releases have only been available on the blogs, on 12″s and as promos. With that in mind the band (Dominique Keegan and Glen “DJ Wool” Brady) decided to release a full length CD of their remixes & rarities. Besides mixes by some of their favorite producers (Mylo, Eli Escobar, Rinoçérose, Copenhagen’s Supertroels and more) the album entitled “Remixes & Rarities” on Plant Music also includes some of the many remixes The Glass have done for other bands this year …

A mystery to most, Darondo records are high on the wants-lists of many collectors. He is spoken about in hushed-tones by other Bay Area musicians. Back in the day he was seen cruising around town in a white Rolls Royce (with a “Darondo” license plate). He opened-up for James Brown and lived a colorful lifestyle hanging with folks like the notorious Fillmore Slim. Take a listen to these tracks, released for the first time together on an album, and you may agree that he could have been the next Al Green or Sly Stone. But about 25 years ago Darondo disappeared.

Releasing three singles in the early 1970s (as Darondo, Darondo Pulliam, or the miss-spelled Dorando) he mixed low-rider soul with blues and r’n’b. He delivered in a variety of styles from the socially-charged “Let My People Go” to the sexually-driven funk of “Legs”. All three singles were recorded in the Bay Area, and both sides of each of the singles are fantastic productions …
