In the early 1980s, Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda formed an ashram in Agoura Hills, California. There a beautiful, multi-ethnic and multi generational religious community grew up around her. The highpoint of living in this very special and loving environment took shape on Sundays when Alice would lead the community in a musical ceremony, mixing both gospel and Indian chant, to create a music she wholly invented – it was something extraordinarily powerful. The Ashram is still there today. There are still some who live there and there is still a weekly Sunday service that is open for everyone.
The folks who populated the Ashram world of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda were a very special group of people. Many of the adult members were musicians before having moved there, and many of the younger followers have become musicians and film makers as they grew older. One these amazing artists is John Panduranga Henderson. Panduranga played organ, piano and sang with Ray Charles in the 1970’s where he was a star performer in Ray’s band. When he joined the Ashram, he became in essence a star performer there as well, though of course there were no ‘stars’. Alice sitting at the organ would say, “Panduranga” and John would come to the front and let loose one of his amazing gospel-esque solos praising Rama or Vishnu or Jesus, Muhammad, Moses and more. He made one record under his own name – a record so obscure it’s not listed on Discogs, nor found on the interweb? what?!
Today, for you dear listener, we would like to present Panduranga Henderson’s “Ocean of Love.” Om Shanti.

As some of you may know, Alice Coltrane was a legendary pianist, composer, spiritual leader, and the wife of John Coltrane, the most venerated and in?uential saxophonist in the history of jazz. In 1967, four years after meeting John, he died of liver cancer, leaving Alice a widow with four small children. Bereft of her soul mate, Alice su?ered sleepless nights and severe weight loss. At her worst, she weighed only 95 pounds. She had hallucinations in which trees spoke, various beings existed on astral planes, and the sounds of “a planetary ether” spun through her brain, knocking her into a frightening unconsciousness.
The critical event of this period was not that Alice fell into the nadir of her existence, but rather that she experienced tapas, a vital period of trial. These tapas (a Sanskrit term she used to describe her su?ering) helped prepare Alice for the spiritual ally she found in Swami Satchidananda, an Indian guru, with whom Alice made her frst trip to India. On her second trip there, Alice had a revelation instructing her to abandon the secular life and become a spiritual teacher in the Hindu tradition – so she moved out West – eventually opening the Shanti Anantam Ashram on 47 acres she’d bought in Agoura Hills, California.
Music was the foundation of Alice’s spiritual practice. From the mid 1980’s to mid 1990’s, Alice Coltrane self-released four brilliant cassette albums. These cassettes contained a music she invented, inspired by the gospel music of the Detroit churches she grew up in, mixed together with the Indian devotional music of her religious practice, and even fnds Alice singing for the frst time in her recorded catalog. Originally only made available through her ashram, they are her most obscure body of work and possibly the greatest
re?ection of her soul.

“All I am about is making history,”
says Janka Nabay. After a string of cassette releases, Nabay became
a star of electronic bubu music back home in Sierra Leone.
But he was soon forced to escape his homeland’s explosive civil
war in the 1990s. Over the years, Nabay gradually rebuilt
his musical life in the United States while supporting
himself working at hotels and fried chicken restaurants.
Nabay’s bubu music may sound futuristic, but its existence spans centuries. The original bubu is
cloaked in mythology: as legend has it, a young “bubu boy” took the music from witches 500 years
ago, brought it to the public at large, and sacrifced his own life in the process. Over time, bubu
evolved into a music played collectively on percussive instruments and bamboo horns. Upon the
arrival of Islam in Sierra Leone, the hypnotic sound of bubu music was adapted for processionals
during Ramadan. As Janka says: “Bubu is an old, old music, but people don’t know about it. You
can add new things into the beat if you know it really well, and make your own sound out of it.”

“…thanks to technology, imagination and the forces of
globalization, the Bubu sound is working its mysterious,
mesmerizing magic on the world. This is one way
old traditions survive: in the hands of single-minded
visionaries. -NPR All Things Considered
Nabay’s weathered but agile voice is the kind of
instrument that would likely sound at home
on a sparse feld recording… (but with the
band) the music sounds so intensely modern
it’s practically futuristic. -Pitchfork Available from 24.03.2017

Moreno+2 – Music Typewriter

Image: 1606402 Luaka Bop presents key long out of print classic back on vinyl!

Moreno, Kassin and Domenico were childhood friends from school. They formed a band and made three albums, each one under a different one’s name. Their records are different and very influential in Brazil.
Morneo is the son of legendary Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso. You can hear him at age 8 on the first Luaka Bop release (“Beleza Tropical”) singing the words “Ilê Ayê” on Caetano’s song of the same name.
Moreno’s record is to some extent the most conventional of the three, even though Domenico, the drummer, plays drums on a sampler and cymbal sounds using sand aper. The next release, Domenico’s, had the greatest success in the indie world, while Kassin’s album is the most produced (which makes sense as he has become one of the most successful producers in Brazil).

Les Yper Sound – Explorations In Drums & Sax

Les Yper Sound presents an all-instrumental journey through the many worlds of drums and saxophones. In early 2016, New York session musicians Miles Arntzen and Jas Walton—who both currently play in Afrobeat ensemble Antibalas—began experimenting with their respective instruments in Miles’s Greenwich Village basement. They composed demos that were made up of Miles’s percussion, Jas’s woodwinds, and the sounds of everyday objects.

The style of recording and manipulating everyday ‘non-musical’ sounds was born in Paris during the 1940s and dubbed “musique concrète.” This revolutionary process seeped into pop music in the mid-‘60s, and now—due to ever-advancing music technology—it is a staple of mainstream music. Explorations of Drums & Sax is a hat tip to the novelty of recorded sounds back when they were still weird and way out.

As well as experimenting with the early laboratory process of musique concrète, Miles notes, “usually one of us was coming from something else, from a rehearsal with so-and-so right to my basement and just jumping right in. There was no time to think about what might be seeping in influence-wise, but it was always related to all the other things we were doing.” The duo began working together in 2009 when they started the band EMEFE in jazz school. Between each of their sidemen gigs with other artists, they steal time to get together and spin their own creations.

While touring with Luaka Bop’s William Onyeabor supergroup Atomic Bomb!, Jas met Beastie Boys’ synth master Money Mark and Sudanese-pop artist Sinkane (Ahmed Gallab). In March, the four of them convened in Brooklyn to record under the project name Les Yper Sound, titled after Pierre Henry’s 1967 musique concrète EP. This studio-oriented team of multi-instrumentalists—who are all producers in their own right—digested Miles and Jas’s original basement demos and began improvising new works during sessions at Shahzad Ismaily’s new Figure 8 studio in Prospect Heights.

The process-based sessions were engineered and mixed by tUnE-yArDs mastermind Eli Crews and produced by Lily Wen. During these spring workshop days, the group built new songs from found objects such as a coins, pickups, a coffee maker, and a tape head stylus.

The group picked up and played whatever was lying around, found a groove together, and sometimes recorded only one take. Other times they looped a small caught moment and layered other elements on top of it. The field recorder and vocoder from a previous band session were put to good use, and the group stayed inspired thanks to donuts and Shane’s restaurant around the corner.

On November 4, Figure & Ground releases its sophomore album Explorations of Drums & Sax comprised of 14 original tracks by Les Yper Sound. The album pulls from the group’s eclectic influences and showcases the drums and sax surrounded by an array of acoustic and electronic sounds all rooted in rhythm and pop melodies.

“It’s all about finding that starting point,” says Jas, “and everything blossoms from there.”

As Miles puts it, “we would just start with an improvisational sound, do that for three minutes, build a song around it, and then maybe at the end of the whole thing, you can’t even hear that first thing anymore but it’s a part of everything else that happened around it. When you play a rhythm on a cool-sounding prepared piano, you don’t know what genre you’re in. Maybe it will become a Brazilian jam or maybe it’ll become a soulful groove—and all that happened in the studio. You’re letting the sound of something dictate and inspire you.”

Money Mark, who studied with the early electronic instrument pioneers, revealed some of his ‘recording hacks’ and found the musical in non-traditional objects. Miles recalls: “We went out to lunch and Money Mark was missing somewhere, and he comes back with two TV speakers and says: ‘We could just plug these into an amp and hit them with your fingers—one’s a little broken but maybe it could be the snare,’ and that’s is exactly what happened. We come back from lunch, plug them into a bass amp, and sure enough it’s perfect.” Listen & find out more here. Available from 04.11.2016

19. The New Sound of The Venezuelan Gozadera

Los Amigos Invisibles (The Invisible Friends) have created the ultimate party album. Surprising segues — one after another — join non-stop grooves. Like having an incredible DJ at your house working for the mere price of a CD (or Cassette)… it flows and swings and never stops… one song/groove leads right into the next, no waiting. It feels like being smacked upside the head in a delicious way.

The New Sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera is a journey deep into the pants of rhythm. (We won’t even mention the old sound of the Venezuelan Gozadera). Party music hasn’t sounded this chic since Chic. “The Gozadera, more than a musical style, is a concept allowing us to use whatever music we enjoy and mix it up,” says guitarist Jose Luis Pardo. “Like boogaloo, salsa, bossa nova, funk, disco, house, techno, jungle, merengue, New Wave, cha-cha-cha, mambo, and of course Acid Jazz.” And who better to pull this off than producer Andres Levin (Aterciopelados, Chaka Khan, La Portuaria, La Secta, El Gran Silencio, David Byrne, Arto Lindsay, and many more) along with engineer Fernando Aponte (Masters at Work, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Deee-Lite, Towa Tei)?

This, their second album, finds the young Venezuelans stepping out from under the shadow of the Rock en Español moniker and giving it a much needed face-lift. “We are a rock band that does not just play just rock music,” says singer Jose Briceño. The 19 tracks on the album combine keyboard driven dance-rock with elements of Latin music worked in. Whether it’s the funked out bliss of “Sexy,” the mambo lounge of “Mango Cool,” or the trip-hop ecstasy of “Otra Vez” (on which Arto Lindsay contributes a bit of distorted 12-string electric guitar), Los Amigos Invisibles have created the perfect party album. Their lyrics tell stories inspired by real-life experiences of love (sex), relationships (sex), and more often then not, the taboos that accompany each (sleazy sex).

Formed in 1991 as part of Caracas’ mobile party scene, the six members of Los Amigos Invisibles quickly developed their unique sound by blending all styles of Latin music with modern beats. Their influences are vast, incorporating the space-age sounds of Esquivel, the whacked-out funk of Parliament, and the beat-friendly Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai. “We began making music influenced by the development of the acid-jazz scene and the dance music coming out of London,” says Jose Luis, “but when it came down to playing it, we realized that our culture and environment kept creeping into our music. The tunes that are played over the radio at the corner shop or that we whistle along with from the bodega are songs that interest us… that music is part of our people and that makes it part of us. All we want to do is have fun and make fun of it all at the same time.” Their first album, A Typical & Autoctonal Venezuelan Dance Band, was released in 1996 and received Best Band, Record of the Year and Best Guitarist awards in the Venezuelan Rock Awards.

ESTHETICS OF PLAGIARISM

The esthetic of the fabrication defect will re-utilize the sonorous civilized trash (Everyday Symphony), be they conventional or unconventional instruments (for example: toys, cars, whistles, saws, Hertz Orchestra, street noises, etc.) – all of this put into a rhythmic or dance music format, with choruses, and within the parameters of popular music.

It will recycle an alphabet of emotions contained in songs and musical symbols of the First World, that sealed each marked step of our affective and emotional life. They will be put to use in small “cells” of “plagiarized” material. This deliberate practice unleashes an esthetic of plagiarism, an esthetic of arrastâo* that ambushes the universe of the well-known and traditional music. We are at the end, thus, of the composer’s era, inaugurating the PLAGI-COMBINATOR era.

FABRICATION DEFECT

The Third World has a huge and rapidly increasing population. These people have been converted into a kind of “androids, ” almost always analphabetics. It has happened here in Brazil – in the slums of Rio, São Paulo and the Northeast of Brazil, and in the Third World in general. But these “androids” reveal some inborn “defects”: they think, dance and dream – things that are very dangerous to the First World Bosses.

Let me explain: In the eyes of the First World, we in the Third World who think these things, and who explore our reality on the planet are like “androids” who are essentially defective.

To have ideas – to compose, for instance – is to dare. In the dawn of history, the idea of gathering vegetable fibers and inventing the art of weaving took great courage. To think will always be considered an affront.

* ARRASTÂO – A dragnet, technique used in urban robbery. A small group fan out and then run furiously through a crowd, taking people’s money, jewelry, bags, sometimes even clothes.

translator’s note: A type of “wilding” with a purpose, i.e. robbery. Available from 14.10.2016

“Mr. White has both a literary streak and a crackpot imagination… he brings shards of Southernness, including plinking banjos and bluesy slide guitars, into surreal realms where they may collide with finger cymbals or hip-hop drumbeats … His lyrics mix the calm fatalism of old country music with the fractured causality of Surrealism, while his arrangements set the words in a backwoods filled with electronic ghosts.”

Doug Hream Blunt – My Name Is Doug Hream Blunt

Doug Hream Blunt learnt to play music at the age of 35, by taking an evening class in the golden gate neighborhood of san
Francisco in the late 1980s. the class was organized by a local high school music teacher and his wife, and held in a small home-built
studio of their garage. In the years to come, Doug wrote and self-pressed an album called “gentle Persuasion”. the other students
of the class became Doug’s band members, while his teacher joined on vibes and his wife on bass. (Doug learnt to play guitar from the
teacher, who actually didn’t know how to play himself – thus letting Doug develop his very own (wild!) style of playing). Doug then let
the album sit in his garage for five years, before he started taking it around to a few shops around SF. For promotion, he would play
acoustic, solo shows for patients and elderly people at a hospital where he worked as a nurse’s aid. at a few occasions, he also ar-
ranged to play on the City Visions Public access television show, which, like his record and hospital shows, went pretty much unnoticed.
today, Doug is starting to receive a cult following. With admirers such as ariel Pink, Dam-Funk, David Byrne and Jamie lidell, he has
had a direct influence on the art and music of Dean Blunt, who has not only taken his name, but also created work following the steps
of Doug – recording music with non-musicians and sidestepping other norms for ‘how things should be done’.

“Aaaaa heee hee heeee…mmmm” – Doug Hream Blunt
“so great!” – Jamie Lidell
“AMAAZZZINGG… the KING of the out there guitar solo!!!” Devendra Banhart
“love that guy!” -Dam Funk

Alan Watts – Face The Facts
Saturday, May 16th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Alan Watts – Face The Facts

Image: 1597286 Celebrating Alan Watts’s 100th birthday year, Jas Walton sets
early Alan Watts recordings to original grooves.
Alan Watts is one of the most important interpreters of Eastern
philosophy for his time and ours. If he were alive today, he’d
probably subvert social media in the same way he helped to
reinvent western culture in his own time—his words are as
relevant now as they were then.
This year, Watts turns 100. Figure & Ground honors his
centennial with this four-track EP that takes the recordings of
his early seminar sessions and sets them to original music.
Alan’s wit and wisdom were first broadcast on radio stations in
the Bay Area in the late ’50s and soon spread across America
through public talks, tape recordings, books, and on screen.
On his portable tape deck, Alan’s son Mark Watts captured
hundreds of hours of his father’s seminar sessions. Alan Watts’s
candid spirit comes through in these psychedelic Californian
ruminations, intriguing incantations, and compelling thoughts
on existence. It’s a trip.
A decade later, New York-based musician Jas Walton found
these recordings. One day while experimenting with chord
progression loops at home in Brooklyn, he decided to drop
in Watts’ voice. He started nudging a few words and phrases
around, and soon enough got carried away and strict about
every word falling in the pocket. On the EP, Watts’s rhythmic
phrases are set in time to Walton’s soulful grooves, textured
with synth and horns. A top saxophone player in New York,
Walton performed as part of the Luaka Bop’s William Onyeabor
tribute shows and has played with Antibalas, The Roots, and
Superhuman Happiness, to name a few.
We offer you here an introduction to the music of Jas Walton
and a reintroduction to the world of Alan Watts.

Moreno Veloso – Coisa Boa
Thursday, September 18th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Moreno Veloso – Coisa Boa

Image: 1591355 Morenso Veloso is back with Coisa Boa his first album in 11 years out on Luaka Bop.

This is Moreno’s first album in 11 years!

What mindset were you in making this record, and was it different than how you thought about making records in the past?

Was there something new you wanted to accomplish?
There are many similarities between this record and records we made 10 years or so ago. The spirit, the concentration, how
we work on the sounds is very delicate. We’re always having fun but at the same time it’s not a crazy party, it’s still very
intimate.
But there are also differences. On the first album, we worked on a specific sound for that band, with Domenico playing the
electronic stuff, in hopes of mixing the traditional Brazilian way of singing and guitar playing with a weird, electronic, new
sound. Now, we’re not thinking of that as much, just trying to make something we like and that’s a new way of doing things
for us. Before, we wanted to make it sound very new, but now we’re not trying to do that, just trying to do music. The recordings
were mostly done in Rio, but in total there were 9 different studios, some in Japan, some in Salvador, some in New
York. We just worked with friends, there were like 50 people involved in the record, and more than 30 musicians contribute
some sound to it.

Is it important to you to have other people with you during the process?
It’s not just important. Without my friends I could not make anything. I’m very shy, I’m very lazy, I get insecure about how
people feel when they hear our music. My friends are like fuel, they just make me work. On this record I worked with Pedro
Sa, another friend, he’s a guitar player that works with my father, Caetano, right now. The last three albums my father made,
he and I produced them. We formed this partnership very easily. He came to me and said, “let’s do another album, your
album.” I said I don’t know, but he said, “No no let’s do it! This is the time!” I was just living in Bahia when he came to me
and he just drove me to make it. We made it together, we produced the album together and that was amazing–A gift from
my friends. I’ve had a lot of fun with this album. Of course it’s very emotional sometimes, but I still like it when I listen to it
so I think, “Well that’s ok, let’s put it out.”

Will you play many shows?
Right now I don’t have a band together. I spoke to some other people
who are drummers and bassists, and they were ready to do it but we
haven’t really rehearsed yet. We plan to start playing in February or January.
There will be press and there will be radio!

Various – Love’s A Real Thing
Thursday, April 10th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Love’s A Real Thing

Image: 1588077 Luaka Bop dig deep into their mesmerizing catalog to repress the classic World Pyschedelic Classics: 3 Love’s a Real Thing on double vinyl. First time all compilation tracks are available on vinyl, come rediscover the album that introduced the Western world to William Onyeabor.

First time all compilation tracks available on LP! The twelve tracks on the record explore West Africa’s groove-heavy assimilation of the psychedelic revolution, albeit a few years (and a couple thousand miles) removed from 1967’s Summer of Love. Spanning countries such as Mali, Gambia, Benin, Nigeria, Ghana, and Cameroon, this collection spotlights a time of incredible creative fermentation, reflecting on colonialism’s more fortunate byproduct: the fascinating and unique intersection of hallucinogenic, distorted Western psychedelia and local, traditional African music. This phenomenon of Afro-Rock is what lies at the heart of Love’s A Real Thing. This was one of the first compilations of Afro Funk and helped introduce William Onyeabor’s music to the world. Luaka Bop’s celebrated World Psychedelic Classics series began in 2000 with Volume 1: Brazil, a compilation of the inimitable genremelding Brazilian band Os Mutantes, entitled Everything Is Possible! Volume 2: California Soul , released in 2001 as the third solo record from multi-instrumentalist Shuggie Otis (Inspiration Information), successfully reintroduced Shuggie to the world at large. Volume 4, Tim Maia: Existential Soul and Volume 5: Who Is William Onyeabor.
