Gecko Turner’s fourth album, That Place By The Thing With The Cool Name is a marvelous journey. A globetrotter lifestyle and the opportunity to share experiences with musicians from remote places are the reason for the exuberant worldliness of this album. First signed to Quango, Gecko Turner released Guapapasea! in 2006 and has been going […]

Pompeya – Sister

Image: 1586035 Four slices of lush from Russia with love. The original track, described by MixMag as “a cross between Phoenix and Empire Of The Sun”, gets heavy treatment from Swiss Future Classic and Kitsuné heroes Pharao Black Magic, who deliver a pounding yet hypnotic, bass-heavy mid-tempo tune. Lovemonk darlings Space Ranger keep it equally hypnotic, but bring back the speed and embed the melancholic vocals in some uplifting, moving yet club-banging sounds. The final touch for the digital release is for Mexico City’s rising star on the house scene Rubinskee, serving up funky piece, stripped down and somewhat eerie, and therefore highly evocative.

POMPEYA is a Moscow indie-pop band founded in 2006. Their music draws inspiration from 70s disco, 80s New Wave and 90s indie rock. The successful 2011 Tropical album was followed by Foursome, recorded in LA at Bedrock. Sound-producer of the album is Christopher Haynes, who had previously worked with Norah Jones, Foo Fighters, Grandmaster Flash, Britney Spears, etc. The band has lately toured Europe and US.

Tracklisting

1. Sister
2. Sister (Space Ranger Remix)
3. Sister (Pharao Black Magic Remix) Available from 29.11.2013

Los Fulanos – Discoteque

Image: 1585126 Extend the summer and party like it’s 1977, courtesy of Los Fulanos, Fundación Tony Manero, Sabo and Oneman. After releasing their first full-length for Lovemonk in 2012 with “Si Esto Se Acaba, Que Siga El Boogaloo”, Barcelona bosses of boogaloo Los Fulanos go back in time to party like it’s 1977 on the A-side of this five-track EP. Their friends and fellow Barcelonians Fundación Tony Manero take non-album track “Fourty Five” to the wonder years of disco, and the boys themselves to the same with stellar “El Que No Está Se Lo Pierde”. On the flip we find another gem that’s not on the album, “Inspector Rodríguez”, an uplifting instrumental with a Salsoul feel, while master Sabo does his moombah thing with “Sobran Cueros”. The final touch comes courtesy of Greenwood Rhythm Coalition’s Oneman from NY, who takes “Kind Of Guy” into house territory.

More info:
Barcelona-based Los Fulanos cut their teeth on the small but very lively Spanish Latin funk and soul scene, where a surprising amount of bands, most of them veteran stage warriors, battle for the attention of a crowd spoilt with weekly gigs by internationally successful local groups like the classic soul-funkers Sweet Vandals, Speak Low or Pepper Pots, or new school mestizo bands like Fundación Tony Manero and Muchachito Bombo Infierno. Besides playing countless gigs on their own, they’re also known for backing Catalan rumba king Peret and Latin soul hero Joe Bataan, both of which they’ve recorded with as well, on Vampi Soul and Lovemonk.

Tracklisting

1. El Que No Este Se Lo Pierde (More Disco Than Disco Version)
2. Fourty Five (FTM remix)
3. Inspector Rodriguez
4. Kind Of Guy (Oneman Rework)
5. Sobran Cueros (Sabo Moombahton Remix) Available from 18.10.2013

Casbah73 – Stop Where You’re Standing
Thursday, July 11th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Casbah73 – Stop Where You’re Standing

Image: 1582146 After his previous dancefloor corkers on Lovemonk and Kat records, Casbah 73 returns to the fray with four more servings of deep & funky boogie-house. “If You’re Leaving Part 1 & 2” starts off as a spacey downtempo delight, only to shift gears and morph towards that sweaty, intense area of the club where dislocated bodies rub up against each other and one-night stands are born. The powerful and stripped back house of “Too Cool To Be Careless” keeps it funky, raw and, yes, cool, just below the 120 bpm, while the irresistible “All Night Long” is meant for exactly that: grooving to that ultrafunkular bass line until dawn, and closing track “I Want A Lot” adds some tasty disco to the equation to keep that fire burning!

Casbah 73 has had a busy year, whether it’s delivering intense Detroit-influenced jams & twisted house originals or releasing some essential edits, stripping and rebuilding those disco & jazz bombs for dancefloor duties to great effect. His joints have been supported by names you can trust like Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova, Danny Krivit or Belle And Sebastian’s Chris Geddes.

Tracklisting

1. All Night Long
2. I Want A Lot
3. If You’re Leaving Part 1 & 2
4. Too Cool To Be Careless

In 2007 “Achilifunk”, a compilation + booklet selected and written by Txarly Brown, was released to much critical acclaim both in Spain and the rest of the world. “Achilifunk” was a surprise which opened the eyes of many, especially in Spain, where, for reasons of age, ridiculous hipsterism or whatever other excuse, people didn’t associate […]
