Kon – On My Way Dubs (Splattered Colored Vinyl
Thursday, October 31st, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Kon – On My Way Dubs (Splattered Colored Vinyl

Image: 1584542 What leads an individual to walk the often obsessive path of the crate digger? Raiding filthy basements and accumulating back-breaking stacks of wax on a tantalising search for the unearthed groove, Kon cites early exposure as the source of his calling: “One of the first physical records I fell in love with was Electric Light Orchestra’s El Dorado. The music on that LP is incredible, climatic strings, and full of amazing songwriting.
To digest and absorb music with such depth is the best thing for a 4 year old. Get ’em going young! I know this is part of the reason why later in life I searched further than what was just on the radio.”
Kon’s father was a drummer, and his love of the break not only inspired the quest for the funkiest rarities that birthed the iconic On Track and Off Track compilations, but also informed his approach to the edit. Check the ‘Nite Time Remix’ of ‘Hooked’ as the perfect introduction to his style: breaking things down to the bare essentials, the rhythm section takes on a life of its own in what has fast become the definitive version of an
already classic disco workout. Kon’s output has given new life to this art form, and on the road to mastery he studied the golden touch of editing and remix masters Walter Gibbons and BBE label-mate John Morales.
The natural next step for this beat-juggling heavyweight was a return to the crafting of his own original productions. Bringing together a close-knit team of musician friends, Kon has revived a longstanding partnership with BBE and recorded his debut album titled On My Way. Kon’s first productions were committed to tape in the early 90s when he a formed a rap group called Mikst Nutz. Their demo was given heavy rotation by DJs Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito, and, in 1992, Jive Records came close to signing the project.
We are also treated to the unmistakeable vocals of UK talent Ben Westbeech, who Kon first met at the Southport Weekender. “I was with Amir leaving to catch the car service back to our hotel when I heard a guy yelling our names. Turns out it was Ben, and I had no idea he knew about our On Track compilations. And in turn he seemed to be shocked that I knew who he was! I’ve always liked Ben’s work and I was staying in
London with him when we first cut this tune. It was originally recorded to a totally different track that was all samples.”
The musical arrangement of On My Way reflects a deep understanding of dance floor dynamics, and Kon honed his craft as a DJ playing at house parties in the 80s, coming from a party rock background where all styles were thrown into the mix. He remembers looking up to Boston radio jocks like DJ Jesse McGee and DJ T-Clark, while records like Cash Money & Marvellous’ Ugly People Be Quiet influenced his technical craft: “They contained scratches that were ahead of their time. I really didn’t have any mentors, except for these records and the mixes those guys would do on the radio.”
Kon’s love for wax is for life, but he has little time for those passing judgement on a selector’s format of choice: “It’s a DJ’s skill set and taste that matters. Music is meant to be shared and spread to as many as possible. Who cares what medium I choose to play my music from? We are messengers, period. Nobody owns the sounds that are blasting out of the speakers except the actual musicians. You may own the little piece of plastic it’s recorded onto, but that’s it. Fools need to stop trippin’. I’m not caught up in the hype. I still buy vinyl and I know it’s the coolest medium to store music on. Nothing can beat it. The feel, the smell, the labels and so on, but I can’t take vinyl with me when I die. Now the sounds that have fed and nourished my soul, I take with me everywhere I go. I can take them with me to the grave, or where ever I end up when my physical shell can no longer take it. The music itself is staying with me forever.”
In On My Way, a rich cultural heritage has been distilled into an upfront album of burning dance floor action, showing us why the BBE-crowned ‘King of Digging’ has for so long remained a formidable, worldwide musical icon.

Image: 1608115 Inspired by Ultraman and Norwegian nature, Torb the Roach and Floppy McSpace joined forces and cooked up their instrumental debut. The result, Tape Echo Gold Floppies. It tick-les your senses with low fidelity rhythms, time warping space echo, rare world spices and psychedelic field recordings.

Along with the project they’ve also released a 15- minute motion picture revealing the ex-traordinary story of how the record came to be, a dramatic piece involving ski accidents, black coffee magic and brutal fight scenes.

The album is a combination of beats from the SP1200/S950 combo as well as dubs & ef-fects from the Roland 201 Space Echo. Torb collects rare, obscure, world funk and rare groove records from India, Thailand, China & Japan. There are a bunch of dusty loops on the record made from his digs.

The cover design is a mix of hand drawn illustrations, pictures of equipment and a picture of Floppy McSpace by Ocht & Torb.

Created between 1975 and 1982 for the Rockers and Message labels, most were released as singles and have never been re-pressed, none has ever appeared on an LP before.”

The Halftone Soceity Rhythm Section – Don’t Look Any Further/Caribbean Queen
Friday, January 22nd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Halftone Soceity Rhythm Section – Don’t Look Any Further/Caribbean Queen

Image: 1601828 CB Records and Mophono’s Halftone Society is proud to announce
the first single from their new offshoot. Dubbed (the) “Halftone
Society Rhythm Section”, it features some of the Bay Area’s most
talented live instrumentalists. The project is a refreshing vocalbased
departure from Mophono’s usual curiously obscure offerings,
as it reimagines two eighties dance floor DJ classics “Don’t Look Any
Further” by Dennis Edwards and “Caribbean Queen” by Billy Ocean.
The demand for this music became very apparent when Mophono’s
“Cut Form Creator Dub” of “Caribbean Queen” was recently featured
on the popular bay area compilation “off the beaten tracks”. On
this new single,“The Halftone Society Rhythm Section” aims to pair
the infectious sheen of eighties boogie with an inviting minimalism
reminiscent of seventies funk standards. Young Aundee’s vocals
channel a pop landscape full of rebellious souls, bankrupt lives and
crumbling nations.
The HSRS’s unpredictable approach to the A-Side, “Don’t Look Any
Further”, finds the listener in a gritty drum heavy distortion bath of
lush Rhodes and melodica choruses. On the B-side, with “Caribbean
Queen”, The HSRS adds a layer of vulnerable grit to the silky original
and expounds upon the island sound with Patrick Korte aka P Dub’s
phenomenal drum work, warm dubs and a massive break down that
calls for a rewind.

• Classic DJ cuts covered in a new and unique way
• Produced by Mophono
• Band’s First release on vinyl
• Drum Breaks
• Limited Edition collectible 7” Available from 29.01.2016

Opolopo – Superconductor
Friday, April 10th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Opolopo – Superconductor

Image: 1596260 Opolopo is back with his new album Superconductor out on Z Records.

Opolopo first hove into view for many as the man behind the genre-crossing house remix of Gregory Porter’s ‘1960 What?’, a tune that finished in the Top Ten of many DJs in 2012. Labeled future jazz by some, it’s only a minor part of the Opolopo story which spans genres like a musical suspension bridge.
Opolopo was born Peter Major in Zirc, Hungary, a short drive away from the beautiful tourist spot Lake Balaton, but spent a large part of his childhood touring around with his keyboardist father, listening to the fusion sounds of Herbie Hancock, Jeff Lorber, Jean-Michel Jarre and Tomita, while finally ending up in his current residence of Sweden. It’s little wonder he’s ended up where he is.
His work, both on remixes and original productions is imbued with a life spent listening to the soul, funk, jazz and fusion of his youth. Yet, while clearly inspired by the past, Opolopo’s work still has enough clank and clamour to suggest its feet are still firmly in the present, whether it’s channeling the sound of a 21st century D-Train, dark, fathoms-deep house or doom-laden dubstep. His reworking of St Germain’s ‘Sure Thing’ suggests someone inheriting Ludovic Navarre own jazz-house crown, while ‘Treat You’ by Omar is underpinned by all sorts of wonkiness while Omar takes care of the topline. His remix and production work has appeared on JVC Japan, Tru Thoughts, Warner Bros, Tokyo Dawn and, of course, Z Records.
Arguably the best way to consume Opolopo is live, where he brings together DJing with an array of gadgetry that suggests an electrified Bob Dylan, switching between playing records, tweaking the vocoder, while still finding time for tasty keyboard flurries in between mixes. You don’t get that with Tiësto.
While Opolopo remixes dart from René & Angela basslines to delicious house music, his album Superconductor, is channeling the ’80s, a decade that has been a constant source of enrichment for the Opolopo sound. Superconductor is firmly built around the song, with many collaborations, among them Keni Burke, Diane Charlemagne, Taka Boom and others. Filleted in between even the tracks seem to a have a stronger purpose than mere fillers. ‘The Run’ sounds like a theme from a long-lost sci-fi programme, while ‘Monolith’ sounds like a tune exhumed from the vaults at Tabu Records. In short, Opolopo is a one man Jam & Lewis. Opolopo, as you undoubtedly know, is Yoruban for ‘plenty’ and on Superconductor there is a superabundance of sounds, styles and, yes, tunes. Come feast.

Hercules & Love Affair – Do You Feel The Same (Todd Terry/6th Borough Pr.)
Saturday, December 6th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Hercules & Love Affair – Do You Feel The Same (Todd Terry/6th Borough Pr.)

Image: 1594258 ‘Do You Feel The Same’ by Hercules & Love Affair is easily one of the biggest dancefloor tracks of 2014, the powerful vocal and catchiness made it an anthem in its own right. Now with re-works from one of the most celebrated figures in dance music Todd Terry and talented duo 6th Borough Project the record has been taken in different, but equally dynami,c directions. Todd Terry’s remix keeps the uplifting dance quality of the track whilst adding his signature style of house that was instrumental in creating the deep/progressive house we listen to today. The dub takes the focus away from the vocal and has more of an underground and tech sound. 6th Borough Project often explore long forgotten funk and disco dubs, and with their remix of the track they manage to keep the disco sound of Hercules &Love Affair’s original track, even with the BPM’s dropped down to something far more mellow than the original.

Los Gaiteros De San Jacinto – Dub De Gaita
Thursday, September 11th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Los Gaiteros De San Jacinto – Dub De Gaita

Image: 1591336 ZamZam affiliated longer-format label, Khaliphonic, kicks off, in partnership with Llorona Records (Colombia).

Los Gaiteros de San Jacinto are Colombian cumbia roots icons, legendary in their homeland as guardians of ancient regional musical and cultural traditions. Here they are joined by another legend, On-U Sound founder and dub producer Adrian Sherwood. Alongside Llorona Records´s Diego Gómez, Sherwood and the band have created an absolutely unique sound that seamlessly blends timeless cumbia rhythms and sonorities with powerfully restrained dub mixing.

It is no exaggeration or hyperbole to call this mystical music, a heart-centered psychogeographical journey from the Caribbean Coast of Colombia through Jamaica and UK dubscapes. The heartbeat rhythms this team explores so deftly unite musical cultures in such a natural way that the sound they produce feels almost inevitable. Vocal exhortations, massed flutes, organic bass and keys, extraordinary volleys of percussion, echo trails, reggae skanks, and truly masterful arrangements and dubbing make this a simply crucial release. Miles beyond most attempts at cross-cultural musical fusion, we guarantee you will be mesmerized by the beauty and power of Dub De Gaita. There is simply nothing else like it.

Bombay Monkey – Dark Flow
Friday, June 6th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Bombay Monkey – Dark Flow

Image: 1588402 The theory of ‘Dark Flow’ suggests some structure beyond our visible universe – hinting at
myriad other worlds outside our limited “horizon”. It’s a controversial idea that fascinates
Bombay Monkey, a band who like to create their own musical multiverse.
Their new album ‘Dark Flow’ is a heady mixture of disparate styles: electronic dub meets
Eighties synth pop with a slice of Exotica, wrapped in a cinematic production that’s infused
with quirky humour and a deceptive pop sensibility.
Founder members Guy Martin and Andy Organ started working together in 2003 but this is
their first release since 2008’s journey into cosmic dub ‘130 Astronauts’ which featured cuts
from the legendary scratchmaster Mr Thing (an original ‘Scratch Pervert’).
Initially Bombay Monkey played largely instrumental music comprised of cut-ups and samples,
and toured a stunning audio-visual set, supporting Hexstatic and playing at several festivals
around the UK. They then upped the ante as their music developed into heavier, faster and
dancier tracks with vocals., when Andy began singing on the new recordings.
Dave Tonkinsmith joined the duo in 2012 and now both he and Andy share vocal duties – one
takes lead and the other sings back up, depending on whose voice best suits the music. The
pair chime perfectly throughout ‘Dark Flow’, with melodies that will go “whizzing round your
head like the hadron collider.”
The supercharged drum’n’bass of ‘Monkey See Monkey Do’ recalls the similarly simianobsessed
German technocrats Modeselektor while the slow, moody ‘King of the Jungle’ bears
a marked dubstep influence. There’s more obvious leanings towards pop too, from the playful
humour of ‘It’s Not My Dog’ to the sun-kissed ‘Istanbul Dub’, a gleeful deconstruction of the
1953 Jimmy Kennedy / Nat Simon swing classic.

In each and every instance they’ve demonstrated an innate understanding of all genres with alarming killer motifs. Their debut EP for Program sees them return to the source. D&B is where it began for the trio, and it’s where they show their most muscular, mindbending musical skills. Appearing on Andy C’s ‘Nightlife 6’ in November 2013 with the pranged out ‘Impossible’, these four tracks will be smashing dancefloors worldwide. We kick off with the stunning ‘Big Blow’. Truly unique, it combines sharp percussive elements and a waspish bassline with a deep funk hook that’s entrenched in dramatic pianos and jazzy organs. Timeless, distinctive and daring, there is nothing out there like this. ‘Jackyl & Hyde’ follows. A physical gritty groove slams and shoves with power while Coppla lays down crisp lyrical messages. Textured with intricate production elements and more of the trio’s emphatic drum dynamics, it’s an instant head-turner. Next up: ‘Era’. Delving further into the darkness, the trio whisk us on a mission into deep space. Smelting elements of complex neuro production with classical, minimal funk, ‘Era’ weaves a tight sci-fi web that’s guaranteed to take your floor to another planet. Finally we hit ‘Una Mattina’. Flipping the triplet switch with euphoric glee, what begins as a rush-fuelled star-gazer soon drops us head-first into another devious, bass-bitten workout. Swaggering with an infectious confident groove, we’re bombarded with an array of precision synth shots, sweeps and stabs, each element adding a wealth of funk to the overall vibe. Living up to their name in a major way, Teddy Killerz really are killing it with these four shock-outs. It’s time, once again, to get with the Program!

“Ansa Unta Millionan” […]

Mumdance & Logos – Legion / Proto

Image: 1586004 Enter Mumdance & Logos. Having been introduced to the label earlier this year via ‘Drum Boss’, on Tectonic Plates Volume 4, and generally killing it both together or independently with their releases on the Keysound imprint – the production duo are currently championing a sonic that is set to spread, mutate and progress the sound of the underground. True to the original spirit of Tectonic. With a sense of grand simplicity the duo have managed to seamlessly merge elements of UK hardcore-jungle, pounding, mesmerising techno, gut-wrenching grime and paranoid dubstep into the dancefloor beast that is ‘Legion’. Rising panic is struck immediately from the dissonant strings that lead you into the rhythm, before luring you into an ambushing in the foam a pounding, relentless, weighted kick pattern. The vibe builds until a calculated submarine blip signals the start of an emerging, creeping reese baseline – ready to fully terrorise any dancefloor, anywhere. This is a weapon you want in your DJ bag. 128bpm danger zone. Flip for ‘Proto’, continuing the old-skool jungle vibes and rolling them out, again, at 128bpm. The intro charges up with a muted 4/4 kick pattern, and a demented hoover sample – getting progressively more aggressive as it develops. Then comes the rush of broken breakbeats and 808s, cutting forwards and backwards, unsettling your balance and wrong-footing your expectations. 100% killer.

Truth – Devil’s Hands / I Belong
Friday, June 7th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Truth – Devil’s Hands / I Belong

Image: 1581110 New Zealand’s Truth – the duo of Andre Fernandez and Tristan Roake – put an expansive, cinematic twist on the deeply rooted sounds of pure dubstep. Crushing bass pressure and all-pervading sensations of dread remain the hallmarks of their sound, but previous releases through Tempa, Deep Medi and Disfigured Dubz have also been steeped in soft-focus melody and meditative atmospheres. That’s made them distinctive, glimmering highpoints in DJ sets by dubstep scene figurehead Youngsta, as well as the likes of Digital Mystikz and Hatcha.

*Devil’s Hands is the duo’s second release for Tempa, following 2011’s Dreams, and offers a pair of intricate, smoky and ocean-deep dancefloor riddims. ‘Devil’s Hands’ plays off a delicious tension between sweet and sinister: beautiful, chiming melodies abruptly plunge downward into great chasms of sub-bass, with percussion stripped away to leave the fewest possible elements needed to make bodies move.

‘I Belong’ pushes that dichotomy to even further extremes: a stunningly minimalist, pulsing backdrop is paired with a sung vocal from Yayne. She drifts buoyant and elegant in the midrange, carried along in the track’s slipstream, while piano melodies and tendrils of melodic fog gradually unfurl around her.

Various – New Blood 013 LP

Image: 1580279 Continuing the ever-successful New Blood series into the year 2013 and beyond is the next instalment of fresh cuts from a whole new generation of Med School undergraduates. Featuring the undiscovered stars of the future, ‘New Blood 013’ brings together a collection of sounds from the underground and presents them as a compilation album that will impress D&B specialists from across the board.

‘New Blood 013’ boasts a diverse tracklist and although it is predominantly D&B, there are some half-time tracks, dubstep, downtempo and experimental rhythms which makes for an expansive and genre-crossing listen. From the blissed out soundscape and whispering in Etherwood’s “Unfolding” through the glitchy experimentalism of Bakai’s “Kaikaki” and the moody murkiness of Minor Rain’s “Plasticity” to the incredible textures of Joe Ford’s “Frozen Sound”, there is plenty to discover across the 14-track album.

Featuring some more familiar names such as New Blood 011’s Anile, Blood Pressure’s TwoThirds and Barefoot, tech-heads Optiv & CZA, the elusive Mr Sizef from St Petersburg, the ever-promising Etherwood and Joe Ford, there are, as always with a ‘New Blood’ album, a host of lesser known artists who are names to watch for the future. Expect the unexpected and you might be prepared for ‘New Blood 013’ and its epic array of new talent.

The launch party for ‘New Blood 013’ will take place at Fabric, London on Friday 22nd March where you can catch: London Elektricity (Med School Set), Joe Syntax, Lung, Etherwood, Joe Ford + MCs Ruthless, Juma Phist.

Press / Promotion: Comprehensive campaign in-house serving all UK music and dance titles as well as national, regional and student press – Mixmag, DJ, Trap, Notion, Music Week, Future Music, Time Out, Metro (London + regional

In the 70s Augustus Pablo seemed to just appear, like a vision from another world. His music was ethereal, evocative, unique. There has not really been anyone like him, before or since.
