Mr.Green & ATR – Live From Parkside
Friday, November 4th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Mr.Green & ATR – Live From Parkside

Image: 1606622 ATR is a one of a kind reggae collective based in Parkside Brooklyn.
Founded by Scrillamatic and KG, at their core they are just group
of friends who hang out in the park and sing, all day. The routine is
simple, they meet up at their favorite hangout spot on the side of a
lake, play beats off of a beat up but loud stereo, and belt out lyrics
out into the air. Sometimes a crowd gathers but it’s usually just a few
like minded artists sharing their love for music.
Natives of the west indies, but coming of age in Brooklyn, they
have a very unique perspective on life and the world we live in. With
subject matters varying from traditional roots medleys, smoked out
ganja anthems to gangsta badman chants to heartfelt soulful ballads
telling tales of the ghetto and more, they have a lot to say.

Malik B. & Mr. Green – Unpredictable
Friday, January 29th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Malik B. & Mr. Green – Unpredictable

Image: 1601956 With his popular “Live From The Streets” web series (Noisey/Vice),
Mr. Green has forged a reputation for harnessing the serendipitous
musical moments that arise from life’s chance encounters with
talented musicians. So when he had one of those encounters with
The Legendary Roots Crew emcee, Malik B, outside of The Roots’
Annual Picnic in 2012, it made perfect sense that they would turn a
brief moment of mutual inspiration into a full-fledged collaborative
album.
Malik B and Mr. Green’s collaborative album, Unpredictable, is
an appropriate title for the 13-track journey through the kind of
handcrafted hip-hop created when two skilled musicians come
together to capture the mystique that unpredictably arrives during
the recording process. “Malik would show up at the studio with a
garbage bag of rhymes and go through them. Some of them were
old and weathered, literally falling apart,” describes Mr. Green. “Then
he would just start recording the song in one take: intro, verses,
chorus. It was nothing like I’d seen before.”
Although recording Unpredictable was chaotic at times, the duo’s
chemistry is undeniable. Malik adds, “Our chemistry is just crazy, our
chemistry is like algebra.

1. Dolla Bill
2. Metal is Out (feat. Benefit)
3. Crown of Thorns (feat. Skrewtape)

9. Tyrants
10. Rips in the Paper
11. Rhyme Exercise
12. Dark Streets (feat. R.A The Rugged Man and Amalie Braun)

ABC News ranked unpredictable as one of the top 50 albums
of 2015 and said “This album stands well besides nineties
classics by the likes of Nas, the Wu-Tang Clan and Mobb
Deep”

• The album reached 4 of the billboard charts:

DJ Andy Smith Presents – Reach Up – Disco Wonderland
Monday, October 16th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on DJ Andy Smith Presents – Reach Up – Disco Wonderland

Image: 1615761 Best known to most people for his early work as a Portishead collaborator and International tour DJ, Andy Smith earned his ‘Legendary’ title among crate diggers in 1998 when he released seminal mix album ‘The Document’. In the years since, Andy has continued to live up to his reputation as one of the finest and most creative DJs on the planet, tirelessly digging in the crates and emerging with pure gold. Following in the footsteps of his 2006 exploration of Trojan’s mighty reggae vaults and his two compilations exploring funk music from New Orleans and Jamaica, Andy turns his attention to disco and boogie for the very first time.
The concept for ‘Reach Up – Disco Wonderland’ was born from ’Reach Up’, a DJ collective founded by Andy in 2012 to reflect the spirit of legendary NYC clubs such as Paradise Garage and Studio 54. ‘Reach Up’ showcases 80s boogie, disco and proto house, the foundations upon which dance music culture was built. As you might expect, Andy Smith’s selections for the album are not only delightfully obscure but highly memorable. Many titles will spark recognition, having been sampled for more contemporary hip hop and R&B tracks. Disco & Boogie this compilation may be, but it’s been put together with a b-boy mentality. As Andy himself puts it “At my ‘Reach Up’ and ‘Boombox’ nights a fair few of these will have been played, but interestingly some of these tracks might well get played at more ‘hip hop orientated’ nights i do too because of the disco breaks: tracks like “T Connection” & “Freedom.” Containing a raft of undeniable dance-floor fillers and slept-on anthems, ‘Reach Up – Disco Wonderland’ also at times displays that indefinable, other-worldy, almost eerie sonic fingerprint that’s been present in Andy’s productions and DJ sets since day one. Above all, this album is testament to a youthful obsession with home taping. As Andy puts it: “just being able to officially put these tracks out that i used to play on my ghetto blaster in the streets is an amazing thing!”

Kerri Chandler is house music royalty, and he is next to take the reins of the ever essential DJ-kicks mix series. His sumptuous selection is out on October 20th and arrives with a substantial release tour that includes a launch party at this year’s ADE.
Without New Jersey native Kerri ‘Kaoz’ Chandler, house—specifically deep house—would sound very different. Ever since his teens he has been making and playing music with a unique sense of soul, jazz and deepness. From majors like Atlantic, King Street Sounds and Nervous via his own Madhouse, his releases are never short of genre-defining classics that have spawned a thousand copycats. Affectionately referred to as the Stevie Wonder of house, Kerri’s DJ sets take him all over the world and
often find him playing live keys next to his informed selections. He’s meticulous about sound, too, which means that no-ones kicks hit quite like Kerri’s.
His instantly classic and timeless DJ-kicks mix, though, takes him out of the club and through a world of influences and inspirations. “It’s like me taking you for a walk in New York,” he says. “Like a music tour guide, we go through Brooklyn, Soho, midtown, the Bronx and Uptown, and parts of New Jersey.”
The resulting selection is an unhurried and very personal mixtape with blends, fades and cuts all allowing the music to do the talking. At various points throughout, we hear Kerri speaking into the mic, and that only adds to the feeling that you are sat in his living room as he pulls out all his favourite cuts. He also lays down some of his magical keys at various points, lending yet more personality to the mix Available from 20.10.2017

Finale & Fel Sweetenberg – Two Kings (LTD Coloured/LP+MP3)
Thursday, July 13th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Finale & Fel Sweetenberg – Two Kings (LTD Coloured/LP+MP3)

Image: 1610904 Distant from one another by 600 miles, Detroit and Camden share the infamous honor of being prominent cities in the ranking of the American nightmare. Laminated by economic ruin, devoured by crime, poisoned by drugs, the two cities have, like New York at its worst, generated talents as gifted in microphone mastery as in sampling, as dangerous in rhyming as in production. Finale and Fel Sweetenberg are two direct emanations of these metropolises of chaos, now connected by Effiscienz. Because it is to the Parisian label that we owe this alliance.

LP is limited to 500 copies, transparent gold splatter

TRACKLISTING LP :

Far from a mere agreement where everyone would stay on their assets in a pact of non-aggression, the two MCs have pooled their respective territories to constitute a Hip Hop kingdom that they would govern together. Showing no mercy to the weak.
A dark kingdom, erected from rubble, an arid production clashed with unstructured loops, some of which, though already used, are like reborn from their ashes in a climate of dull violence. Jazz, soul, classical, gospel, lyrical grandeur, in an atmosphere of conquest or on a minimalist piano coming straight out of a thriller, the pair of rhyme-makers compete with any instrument, Finale temperating by a laid and reflective flow the fiery fangs Fel sinks on every bar.
This kingdom, Fel & Finale, will have built it alone, Fel Sweetenberg taking charge of all the beats delivered to the duo’s screened pages in ink, the door ajar only to let Dj Djaz introduce his turntable’s tonearm to scarify the groove with his unique cuts.
Balancing the forces, bringing their ambition beyond the ill-famed streets that have already crowned them, Finale & Fel Sweetenberg raise the matt colors of a demanding rap, the radiance of their banner now beyond the limits of a Detroit-Camden axis.

RUN DMC – Raising Hell
Friday, June 2nd, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on RUN DMC – Raising Hell

Image: 1610401 Up until Raising Hell, the rap juggernaut we know as Run-DMC was still in its building and breaking-down- doors phase. In 1986 that
changed, and in a dramatic way. With their third long-player, the group had reached the mountaintop. It was THE record that proved
hip-hop wasn’t a fad.
Raising Hell marked an important and significant new era for the group. Leaving producer Larry Smith for up-and- coming sonic
innovator Rick Rubin (still co-produced by Run’s brother Russell Simmons), they began to fully transition not only their own sound, but
the sound of the entire genre. Less live playing – with some exceptions – and a slicker, tighter sonic attack. Musical aesthetics aside,
though, at their core they stayed true to the essence of hip-hop: two turntables and a microphone, or two.
It’s impossible to talk about the album without its worldwide smash, “Walk This Way,” which hit #4 on the Billboard pop charts and saw
the group digging in the rock crates to summon Aerosmith in the flesh, combining Steven Tyler’s and Joe Perry’s musicianship with the
group’s own take on the ‘70s classic. The song’s video cemented Run-DMC as legit MTV
idols, and both groups rode its wave to new heights.
Beyond “Walk This Way,” the platter is full to the hilt with undeniable classic singles: “You Be Illin’”, “It’s Tricky”, “Peter Piper” and the
fashion-world shifting “My Adidas.” Each song was new proof that Run-DMC’s sound was indeed new, but still familiar, and full of the
energy, charisma and innovation that drew fans to their first two LPs.
Aside from the singles, the reason the album stands up so well is the fact that there is virtually no filler. “Proud To Be Black” remains a
pioneering and underrated cut when people talk about “conscious” hip-hop. And to make sure they never lost the streets that gave them
their start, “Hit It Run,” “Son Of Byford,” “Is It Live” and “Perfection” all bring it back to the group’s early days in the park.
Besides the triple platinum status the album achieved, it was more than just a pop smash. It signaled a new era for rap music, and it was
the no-turning- back point for the entire genre. This was the beginning of what we now call the Golden Era, and it still sounds as fresh
today as it did three decades ago.

————–

Key Marketing Points:
– Manu Delago is regarded as the world’s leading hang player.
– Features collaborations with Douglas Dare (Erased Tapes), Erik Truffaz (Blue Note) and Pete Josef (Sonar Kollektiv, Reprazent)
– Previous Radio support from Tom Ravenscroft (BBC 6 Music), Don Letts (BBC 6 Music), Jamie Cullum (BBC Radio 2), Alex Lester (BBC Radio 2), Nitin Sawhney and Huey Morgan (BBC 6 Music)
– Previous press support from i-D, Clash, DJ Mag, The Telegraph, Financial Times, Songlines, The Times and more.
– Early campaign activities include Worldwide FM, Sofar Sounds and Resonance FM sessions
– WW Tour confirmed for early 2017, including shows at SXSW.

Various – Good Measure EP Pt.1
Thursday, November 3rd, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Various – Good Measure EP Pt.1

Image: 1607314 While the rest of the world basks in the ‘Body Glo’ of a dreamy label debut from Australia’s Bronze Savage, Moonboots & Boardman are straight back to business, uniting a diverse cast of Mancunian talent for a four track collaboration with clothing brand Good Measure.

After romancing our ears with the emotional pop of ‘Delicious Crime’ back on Nado 1001, Half Silk returns to Balearic base camp with the exotic exploits of ‘Tsukimi’, a coastal cooler for hot Summer nights. Borrowing a bustling bossa from the libraries of Japan, the mystery man canters through infectious organ licks, eleki guitars and subdued synths, darting between Surf and City Pop with a trail of tape delay in his wake.

Taking the reins for the A2, King Clyde swaps the sophisticated sway of the Far East for the well-thrown shapes and vivid colours of Nigeria, packing ‘Request Line’ with red hot Afrobeat brilliance. As crunchy guitar and distorted organ ride punchy drums and dexterous bass, the track swaggers out of the speakers like Shaun Ryder in a dashiki, demanding complete dance floor attendance from anyone in earshot.

Things take a turn for the sublime on the B1 as Dream Lovers deliver a suitably somnolent cover of the Vini Reilly masterpiece ‘For Belgian Friends’. While a stripped back rhythm section keeps its hypnotic time, airy guitars and metallic keys blend the sticky heat of Thai streets with Caribbean calm, laying us softly to rest on a bed of gossamer melody.

The Records We Never Made maintains that medicated pace to bring proceedings to a close with the horizontal beauty of ‘On A Whispered Way’, a delicate haze of melancholic downbeat for the latest night or earliest morning. The steady pulse of reverberating percussion leaves plenty of room for the gentle acoustic strum and shimmering textures which echo through the soundscape, transporting us to someplace different entirely.

Officially Aficionado.

Charles Bradley – Changes (POOL ONLY/2LP+MP3)
Thursday, April 7th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Charles Bradley – Changes (POOL ONLY/2LP+MP3)

Image: 1602716 Charles Bradley is set to release his third album, Changes, on April 1st on Daptone Records. Rolling Stone named Changes one of the “Most Anticipated Albums of 2016,” stating “The ageless, limitless ‘Screaming Eagle of Soul’ swoops back with Changes, an album named after Charles Bradley’s affected rework of Black Sabbath’s 1972 piano ballad.”

The remarkable against-all-odds rise of Charles Bradley since the release of his 2011 debut album No Time For Dreaming has been well documented. He transcended a bleak life on the streets and struggled through a series of ill-fitting jobs before finally being discovered by Daptone Records. The year following the release of No Time For Dreaming was one triumph after another including a breakthrough performance at SXSW, several television performances and having the album named to many year end “best of” lists. The soul singer’s ascent continued with the 2013 release of his triumphant second album Victim of Love, which saw Bradley emerging from his past heartaches stronger and more confident, overflowing with love to share. Image: 1603242 It’s been 3 years since Tel Aviv’s indie-soul septet MONC released their debut LP “The North” on Acid Jazz Records. But make no mistake, they haven’t been resting. In the meantime they have released sold-out singles, an EP, and have toured Europe no less than five times! They visited Germany, France, Italy and the Czech Republic, and were met with excitement all over Europe’s Mod and Soul scene.

April of 2016 sees the release of their second studio album, titled “This City”, which is dedicated to their home town – Tel Aviv. In the album MONC infuse Northern Soul, Post-Punk and Rock’N’Roll influences into heady visions of the city’s buildings, streets, bedrooms, clubs and bars, while remaining dedicated to their brass section extravaganza and the three-minute pop-nugget charm.

The band have a fan in Craig Charles, who liked the album so much he’s hand-selecting 3 of his favourite tracks from the album on his BBC Funk & Soul Show and will invite listeners to phone in and vote for the “single”, which will then be released digitally by the band. He has also invited the band over from Tel Aviv for a live session in the station’s Manchester studios.

Hot 8 Brass Band – Vicennial: 20 Years Of The Hot 8 Brass Band
Friday, November 13th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Hot 8 Brass Band – Vicennial: 20 Years Of The Hot 8 Brass Band

Image: 1599239 New Orleans’ Hot 8 Brass Band toast their 20th Anniversary in typical roof-raising style, with a series of releases and live dates to celebrate this significant and incredibly hard-won milestone. At the centre is ‘Vicennial – 20 Years Of The Hot 8 Brass Band’, a special album mixing brand new tracks with newly recorded classic Hot 8 material, this jubilant LP finds the band on the form of their lives.

Across three albums – 2007’s ‘Rock With The Hot 8’, 2012’s Grammy-nominated ‘The Life & Times Of …’ and 2013’s ‘Tombstone’ – with a host of standout singles, including their iconic version of “Sexual Healing” alongside several other covers and equally impressive originals, Hot 8 Brass Band have told the story of their lives and their city like only they can.

One of the great New Orleans acts, Hot 8 have pushed on through a barely imaginable series of trials. The devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the separate deaths of four of their band members, and the horror of trumpeter Terrell “Burger” Batiste losing his legs in a car crash, conspired to test these men almost to breaking point. They honour their fallen friends and help to work towards the future of their community by putting their energies into positive projects at home as well as touring as much as they can. They march together and they play their music – a rambunctious yet elegant and super-tight mix of jazz, funk and hip hop – not merely as though, but because their lives depend on it.

The recording sessions for “Vicennial …” saw Hot 8 Brass Band welcoming former members back into the studio, as well as featuring performances from family members of their fallen bandmates (from siblings through to grandparents), giving even more meaning and poignancy to each track, whether new or a revision of one of their classics. Across the album, the vibrant new recordings capture the spirit of a community and make a strong statement of the band’s longevity, vitality and constant progress.

“Hot 8 has helped galvanise its community since 2005, captures both the edginess and transcendent beauty of life in its city” – The Wall Street Journal
“Hot 8 music is feel good music… music with a message. It’s life music.” – Hot 8 band leader, Bennie Pete
“Incendiary” -THE OBSERVER
“Irresistible” -MOJO
“Undiluted nourishment for the soul” – THE BIG ISSUE
“One of 2015’s finest albums” – SONGLINES
“Peerless” – METRO
“Those guys have definitely got the horns” – LAUREN LAVERNE (BBC 6MUSIC)
“Dope” – GILLES PETERSON (BBC 6MUSIC)

Various – Ork Records: New York, New York (4LP+Book)

Image: 1599478 Where in the mythos of punk is there room for a frizzy-haired cinephile San Diegan? How could the defining rock attitude and look of the late 1970s get brainstormed by two go-nowheres from a boarding school in Hockessin, Delaware – a D student and kidvoted Most Unknown by his senior class? Forget the worn-out yarns about London gobbers and safety-pin piercings – the true story of the birth of punk rock on 45 is the story of Ork Records, captured by Numero Group on four hefty LPs (or two shiny compact discs) and told across 120 high-gloss pages (184 for the CD) filled with insider photos and sordid details. It is a story populated by iconic names like Television, Alex Chilton, Lester Bangs, Richard Hell, the Feelies, Patti Smith, Talking Heads, Brian Eno, Blondie and the Ramones. And it’s a tale told from the hallowed grounds of CBGB, Max’s Kansas City, and Ardent Studios. It all began with Terry Ork, a Jewish SoCal film nerd enthralled by Andy Warhol’s posse as they made a transgressive surfing flick, who moved cross-country to manage a movie memorabilia shop on the grubby streets of the Lower East Side. Made in the shadows of disco and dereliction in late-’70s Manhattan, Ork Records: New York, New York is not just the genesis of punk, it is the birth of the New York City scene and indie culture as we know it.

Various – Private Wax Vol.2

Image: 1598230 BBE and ZafLoveVinyl team up again for Private Wax Vol. 2 – Super Rare Boogie & Disco.

Obsessive collector, record store owner and mine of musical knowledge, Zaf is vinyl junkie of the highest order. His first ‘Private Wax’ compilation came in 2012 and immediately became a highly sought after gem, due to the rare and wonderful disco and boogie contained within.

Owning the world’s premiere website for rare records (http://www.zafsmusic.com) and counting Gilles Peterson & Norman Jay among his customers allows Zaf a near superhuman selection of music to choose from, so anyone worried that he might have used up all his best tunes on Volume 1 can relax.

From the shimmering Disco of Starvue’s ‘Love Affair’, which opens up the album, right through to the uplifting last track, Wes Black’s ‘I Feel Good’, it’s clear we are in the hands of a master curator. Containing only original versions, literally thousands of pounds’ worth of rare records have been lovingly re-mastered to build this very special package.

With the current disco and funk revival making headway into the charts, this compilation of authentic, original material could not be timelier. From dance-floor oriented disco monsters to more subtle boogie jams, the album takes the listener on a journey from the nightclub to the streets of 70’s and 80’s Black America, where the early experimental blueprint for hip hop and house can clearly be heard in so much of the music.

A slice of history, but also a collection of tracks that still have so much mileage left in them, we invite you to dive once again into the magical world of Zaf’s Private Wax.

Wolf Eyes – Enemy Ladder / Dull Murder Two

Image: 1599097 Post-industrial/noise group Wolf Eyes and are set to release their new album ‘I Am A Problem: Mind In Pieces’ on October 30th. Behold the album’s first single ”Enemy Ladder” b/w ”Dull Murder Two.”

Wolf Eyes history stretches from 97-to present with over 500 releases into the either of the musical world: with units only normal instrument being a lone GUITAR thru the years: give and take some gongs and blues harmonica,: strings here put thru a John Cipollina- in year 2098 live thru a drag strip filter fuzz -damage direct from Jim Baljo. Nathan Young provides vox & electronics from a woods possessed by a spirit thats both too ancient and too futuristic to gain comfort in its own proto- rural/urban musical environment. Final member John Olson rounds out the soundscape with electronics and woodwinds whose only job title can be known as conjuring ”the gut of un-nameable menace” into sound. Here on I AM PROBLEM : the trio are at their peak: relaxed but knife-focused : not a second is wasted on the streamlined atmosphere of scruffy scotch tape-electronics musique’ concrete foundation of splatter used to raise up a monument of individualism and idiosyncratic homemade misfired dribbling ROCK AND ROLL: again from the year 2098, with a new messed up misconfigured FACE.

In conclusion: I suggest you sit back, empty your brain gels: and let this PROBLEM sink/rip/boil into your blood stream and witness the WOLF sound molecules fight their rugged way into your world-view/ personal vision and follow the dissonance to the streets to fight your own lone revolution, from scratch: at day one with YOUR MIND IN PIECES.

Conjunto Papa Up – El Jalabolismo / Aprietalo
Tuesday, June 9th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Conjunto Papa Up – El Jalabolismo / Aprietalo

Image: 1597682 Conjunto Papa Upa made it clear with their 2013 debut single on Music With Soul – they would be the torchbearers of the modern day musical explorations of Venezuelan polyrhythmic grooves.
An oft-forgotten neighbor in the now heavily publicized and compiled sounds of Colombia, Peru & Brazil – Venezuela has historically featured a rich & diverse melting pot of sounds that share influences from the Atlantic, Pacific & the US. Perhaps it is in that unique blend of sounds, along with its combination of instrumentation & amplification that makes it equally hard to describe as it is
beautiful.

Fortunately, Alex Figueira, no stranger to the cavernous depths of 1970’s tropical music on wax – and known from his other project, Fumaça Preta – has continued in the buried traditions of his native Venezuela with Conjunto Papa Upa.

Their newest single, in true Music With Soul tradition, is another double sider, may you chose which song you want to make your A side. El Jalabolismo opens with a direct dose of 60’s Sudamérica style surf-garage. An electrified combination of rock and roll, Guaguancó, Samba and Parranda through the looking glass of the scorching hot Caribbean coast. The relentless and pulsating lo-fi guitar riff gives way to the rebellious lead vocals, describing how an epidemic of systematic “Ass Kissing” can destroy a country, in a clear reference to the current political landscape of Venezuela. Things build into the massive chorus declaration, a fundamental call for the ephemeral character of every democracy, and the need to preserve yours (if you’re lucky enough to live in one), followed by a totally unexpected cuica intervention and a furious Timbales
solo. A mix you have probably never heard before.
Apriétalo, begins with the subtlest touch of an electrified guitar lick before the rhythm section begins chugging along effortlessly behind the mysterious, echo-drenched vocals of Figueira, this time possessed by the spirit of “Chamo Ismael”, one of the “Holly Thoughs” of Venezuela (Google that up), warning all decent people of Caracas not to walk the streets at night, for all sorts of horrible things could happen. The trippy character of the tune is reflected on every one of the instruments recorded, from the hypnotic bass line and the disturbing wah wah to the pulsating voodooish rhythms of the maracas and congas and the inherent spookyness of the almighty semibroken combo organ, reminding the more familiarized listeners of popular Latin rhythms such as Cumbia or Salsa but with a more prominent African presence, a constant element in the music of Conjunto Papa Upa. Once again with this new single, Conjunto Papa Upa continues to blaze their own trail within the massive tropical community that permeates the worldwide underground scene, making it hard for most to believe that these songs have been recorded in Amsterdam, in 2015. Available from 10.07.2015

Joyce Elaine Yuille – Welcome To My World
Friday, May 15th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Joyce Elaine Yuille – Welcome To My World

Image: 1595840 Schema Records proudly presents the new debut album from New York City vocalist, Joyce Elaine Yuille. Class, great music and cookin’ jazz.”

Joyce grew up in the East Harlem section of Manhattan, better known as Spanish Harlem or El Barrio. She decided to focus on something distinct after many years of “live” performances in Europe… A tangible yet multifaceted project: the album you have before you. “When you perform you’re giving a lot of emotion, you’re giving a lot of energy, but once the concert is finished, I feel it’s important that people can still connect with you, the music and what they felt while they watched you and listened to you perform live. You know? The whole thing with me as a performer, is I want to leave a good and lasting impression on people”.

“Welcome To My World” represents a transition for Joyce: whereas for some musicians the recording studio is a safe haven, for others it may represent an intimidating environment: with her debut album, Joyce embraces a new challenge that is able to carry forth her stage energy and perfectly recreates in the studio that strong “live” element which characterizes her performance. As she explains, “When I’m recording, I basically try to put myself in a scenario where I’m doing a live show and that helps me overcome the fear of being in the studio and making mistakes, because when you’re doing live, you just go, you’ve got to do it, you got to sing, you know, whatever is going on inside you, you just have to bring that out and I try to do the same thing, while I’m in the studio”.

As you listen to her warm vocals throughout the album, which include a slight hint of soulful prowess, there’s no fear that cannot be overcome. Her heartfelt interpretations welcome us into her world, where an intricate and honed voice texture reveals her incredible qualities as an interpreter. Nuances of Jazz, Soul, Swing, Blues: “Welcome To My World” is Joyce’s gift to us – for the fortunate ones who have had the pleasure of hearing her live it would be effortless to recognize her warm timbre and equally warm heart – this album is concrete proof of her talent and personality. (In fact), Joyce co-wrote most of the songs on the album, original compositions and her lyrics that reveal her profound nature through music – “I wrote a number of songs that kind of reflect my life situation, situations in my friends lives, world events, situations I see daily, maybe just walking down the streets.” Songs like “Late I Rise”, a tune that speaks about perseverance and staying positive, or “Come With Me (The Ride Is Free)”, where she urges us to forsake our biases, to refuse to partake in prejudices and judgement and just enjoy our time on earth, respecting others and ourselves.

“A Time For Love Again”, composed by Marco Bianchi with Joyce’s lyrical skills, is another example of how this album goes beyond music and expresses a powerful and strong message: with this song Joyce speaks about disillusionment in love, telling us how there’s no sense in closing ourselves in a shell and giving into the fear of feeling and the ability to love again. We can all love again, reach out to others and feel amorous again. The album also includes some stand out covers, classics such as Marvin Gaye’s “It’s Madness” and Donny Hathaway’s “Trying Times”. The album features the renowned and astounding Finnish sax player Timo Lassy and his band – musicians who are amongst some of the best Jazz players on the international jazz scene. Timo and his guys bring that extra something, a subtlety with a powerful impact and a groove that was needed to fulfill the dream and the vision of Joyce Elaine Yuille. Joyce has excitedly stated, “these guys are wickedly fantastic, I keep telling everyone, don’t close your eyes on Finnish Jazz scene, because these guys are really kicking major ”! She smiles…

acclaim and has toured with many artists including renowned neo-soul artist Jill Scott, young upandcoming

graduate Tawiah (UK) was first introduced to Spraggon via the attention of Gilles Peterson, who
championed her song ‘Watch Out’ in 2007 and also named her the winner of his Worldwide
Award for Best Newcomer the following year, Kevin Mark Trail (UK) features on three tracks after
being recommended in the aftermath of an exceptional performance in the UK, Stones Throw
Records’ singer and beatmaker Georgia Anne Muldrow (US) has been on Spraggon’s wish list
ever since he heard collaborations with the likes of Eric Lau, Madlib and Sa-R, PPP and Erykah
Badu, and long time best friend of both Trail and Mathieson Sharlene Hector (UK) has worked
with too many artists to mention and currently sings with Basement Jaxx.
“Sola Rosa’s Magnetics is solid – a great album to have on repeat at the backyard this summer.” –
Rachel Bache, NZ Herald
Sola Rosa continue to experiment and evolve, which is a true testament to their success over the
years. From his humble beginnings experimenting with a 4-track recorder at the ripe age of 19,
Sola Rosa frontman Andrew Spraggon has cultivated over 15 years of rich and well-crafted
melodic beats. Fusing a rotating mix of hip-hop, jazz, reggae, latin, neo-soul and funk topped with
an assortment of diverse vocalists, Sola Rosa have released five critically acclaimed long
players to date.
The latest construct of this collective sees this five-piece strip away their collaborations with an
array of session musicians, choosing instead to record together as a complete band, which has
allowed them to enjoy a more simple and methodical creative process.
The album was mixed in Queenstown by Josh Thorne aka DJ Alias. Analog mastering was once
again undertaken by Ricardo Gutierrez in NYC . Some of his credits include Madonna, Just Blaze,
Drake, The Rolling Stones and John Legend.
Currently Sola Rosa is made up of five key individuals. Matt Short joined Sola Rosa in 2004 as an
incredibly accomplished session player, who has previously played with the Opensouls, Tyra &
The Tornadoes and Vietnam War. Ben White an accomplished jazz guitarist followed suit in 2007.
Vocalist, producer and MAINZ teacher Cherie Mathieson joined the band in late 2011 as their
touring female vocalist. Mathieson has collaborated with celebrated producers and artists like
Mark de Clive Lowe, Dego (4hero), Lanu (The Bamboos), Zed Bias and closer to home with The
Relaxomatic Project, Solaa, Manuel Bundy, Jason Eli ( Joosika) and Lewis McCallum.
The latest addition is British artist and The Streets co-vocalist Kevin Mar Trail. Trail has
collaborated with local jazz wizard Nathan Haines, international heavyweights Nitin Sawhney,
Estelle and Black Twang and landed support slots for N.E.R.D, Massive Attack and Angie Stone.
Keyboard player, percussion, computer whiz, and all-round beat maestro Andrew Spraggon
began performing and touring for the first time in his early 20s, as the lead vocalist and guitarist of
indie rock band Cicada. Six years later, in 1998, Spraggon made the leap from 4-track to software
and never looked back. He initially performed solo, but quickly recruited a revolving door of Sola
Rosa collaborative incarnations and a band of talented session players that included players from
Fat Freddy’s Drop, Opensouls and Ladi6. Spraggon was also a member of Dimmer from 2000
– 2004. Most recently he has produced local acts including Batucada Sound Machine and Tahuna
Breaks.
Over the years Sola Rosa have enjoyed many achievements in New Zealand, including a #1 on
iTunes and the Independent NZ Music Chart with their 2009 smash record ‘Get It Together’. It
reached #15 in the album charts and went on to achieve Gold status. The awards in Sola Rosa’s
cabinet include Best Independent Release in the 2000 bNet Music Awards for the ‘Entrance To
Skyway’ (EP) and Best Electronica Album in 2001 for ‘Solarized’. They also received nominations
at the Vodafone NZ Music Awards for Best Dance/Electronica Album in 2006 for ‘Moves On’,
Best Producer and Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2009 for ‘Get It Together’ and Best Electronic
Album in 2012 for ‘Low and Behold, High and Beyond’.

Alex Puddu Soultiger – Alex Puddu Soultiger (LP+CD)
Friday, March 6th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Alex Puddu Soultiger – Alex Puddu Soultiger (LP+CD)

Image: 1595837 “An explosive boogie funk production for your dancefloor, with special guest Joe Bataan on the tracks “The Mover”, “50,000 Women Can’t Be Wrong” and “Love Talk”.

As an avid music lover, and not necessarily of any given genre but of music that is vibrant and full of heart-wrenching stories as told by the people that created it, I was lucky enough to have grown up in the early sixties in NYC, coming from the Spanish-speaking extract of the Caribbean, and fortunate enough to experience this dynamic happening musically and culturally that was NYC in the sixties.

While geography and segregation play a part to the music that you were exposed to on a daily basis, there was a special interchanging of ideas musically between the Afro-American communities and the Spanish-speaking Caribbeans who have been arriving steadily since the 40’s, from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and to a lesser extend South America. While our parents were listening to more traditional Latin sounds like Bolero, Charanga and Merengue to name a few, their offspring were gravitating towards the Afro sounds of R&B and soul music. In Spanish Harlem particularly but not exclusively, a new sound was emerging, called Latin Soul, which is a broad umbrella of a term that encompasses an array of Latin styles and fusion, the core being Afro-Cuban rhythms – with the mix of Boogaloo, Shing-a-ling, Mambo, Son Montuno etc. – and the African American sounds of R&B and soul music.

This new genre crossed the different communities of New York, especially with the incorporating of English and Spanish lyrics to the sound. Some of the great exponents of this sound, the likes of the Joe Cuba Band, Harvey Averne, Joey Pastrana, Johnny Colon, Lebron Brothers, Ray Barretto, Ralfi Pagan, Tito Ramos, etc., etc. and of course Joe Bataan who I will be coming to in a minute. This sound and the musicians, who created it, are as far as I’m concerned still relevant, and their music still sounds fresh and vibrant compared to what’s being consumed by the masses today. Which brings me nicely to Joe Bataan and a friend and music lover Alex Puddu.

Joe Bataan encompasses everything that Latin Soul meant in El Barrio and to the Spanish-speaking people of NYC and beyond. Bataan who is of Filipino and African American extract shares all the attributes and attitude that a young gun of East Harlem in the 60’s and 70’s would need to rise to the heap of the pile, on the streets and musically. His early work from Gypsy Woman, Subway Joe, Poor Boy and Mr. New York & The East Side Kids is testament to his New York roots, but specifically to his Harlem roots. Melodies accompanied with his sweet soulful voice are everything a Latin soul-singer could wish for. Even today, Bataan’s sound is as relevant as 1969 NY, and Call My Name, Young, Gifted & Brown, and King of Latin Soul are perfect examples of his longevity.

The next piece of the puzzle is trailblazer and drummer and everything else that’s nice about being Italian: Mr. Alex Puddu. Alex who has been living in Copenhagen for almost 30 years and to his credit, has been doing his own thing to connect his roots for that great 60’s and 70’s sound that Italians did so well, and everything from Danish porno scores, to funk and of course Latin Soul. We have had the good fortune and blessing to have Alex do a collaboration with Joe Bataan for the album Alex Puddu Soultiger.

Close your eyes, and listen to this collaboration. Whether you were born and raised in Rome, Paris, London, Copenhagen or any other city, listening to Bataan and Alex’s production and musical input, you will be taken back to Spanish Harlem and the mean streets that Bataan and myself were raised in, and which shaped our future and filled our very soul… Latin Soul still lives today, and Joe Bataan with some help from Alex Puddu brings us a little closer to that wonderful time that I cherish so much… Bravo and grazie mille, Joe and Alex.

Manu Delago – Silver Kobalt
Friday, February 27th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Manu Delago – Silver Kobalt

Available from 10.04.2015
