Elyse Weinberg – Greasepaint Smile

Image: 1598627 The unreleased second album by an original lady from the canyon. Recorded and recanted in 1969, Greasepaint Smile is more assured than its self-titled, Tetragrammaton-issued predecessor. Weinberg’s finger-picked acoustic is layered over distant drumming, while her gravel-pit voice evokes life, love, and mortality. Fellow Torontonian Neil Young sears “Houses” with his signature fuzz-tone, casting chaos over the beautiful ballad, while J.D. Souther, Kenny Edwards, and Nils Lofgren, pick up the slack. Masterfully produced by David Briggs, Greasepaint Smile has climbed out of the canyon and is bound for every turntable east of the 405.

Prodigy – H.N.I.C. (BF RSD)
Tuesday, October 24th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Prodigy – H.N.I.C. (BF RSD)

Image: 1615479 When it comes to authentic, ride-or-die hip-hop, few crews have as much
resonance as Mobb Deep. Featuring two double-threat MCs who also
produced – Havoc and the sadly-departed Prodigy – the crew changed the
hardcore rap game in 1995 with their sophomore classic The Infamous,
and went on to rule the dark corners of hip-hop for the second half of the
90s and well into the 2000s.
After multiple Mobb Deep platters in the ‘90s, Prodigy entered the 2000s
as a solo artist with force, rolling over a stomping, piano-freaked backdrop
laced by producer The Alchemist, with “Keep It Thoro.” It has held up over
time, proving itself as an anthemic classic that the streets and clubs still
respect.
Flaunting a smooth-but-menacing flow, Prodigy’s no-nonsense lyricism
on “Keep It Thoro” is prototypical modern age brag rap. Countless MCs
have followed his flow, from Fabolous to Joey Bada$$. The song is short
and sweet, clocking in at just over 3 minutes. There are no wasted verses,
just hardcore rhymes that stay with you.
But “Thoro” was the tip of the iceberg on what proved to be one of the
more coveted rap full-lengths of the era. The album boasted other
charting singles, including “Rock Dat Shit” and “Y.B.E.” (featuring B.G.),
but it can be argued that the album’s real gems are buried deeper.
“Genesis,” “What U Rep” (featuring Noreaga) and “Three” are all sinister
yet pensive. “Wanna Be Thugs” and “Delt With The Bullshit” are strong
and evocative Mobb Deep cuts, featuring production and vocals by Havoc.
And alongside other standouts, perhaps the deepest cut of all – especially
in light of Prodigy’s recent and way-too-soon passing due to complications
from Sickle Cell Anemia – is “You Can Never Feel My Pain,” which
details the health issues and challenges this talented MC and producer had
been facing his whole life.
H.N.I.C. was Prodigy’s first solo album, but it is perhaps his best. Among
fans he will never be forgotten, for his skills, his storytelling and his
no-B.S. approach to the art of MCing.

Their latest and well received album, Libertad , produced entirely by Texas music icon and Grammy Award winner Adrian “AQ” Quesada (Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, Echocentrics, Spanish Gold), re?ects today’s current mobilization among Black and Brown communities in the face of debilitating cycles of police brutality, ?awed education systems, privately owned prisons and detainment centers, corporately owned politicians, and racist judicial systems.
Through Easy Lee and MexStep’s back and forth Black Chicano intellectual ?ow, DJCG’s insight and dynamic turntablism, and AQ’s AfroLatino psychedelic funk-infused beats, the album delivers a mix of social justice and jam session with each song designed to raise questions, incite discussion, and promote healing, growth, and liberation. Libertad is a powerful body of work that documents and speaks u pon the times that we are living in

Beloved DJ, compiler and incurable vinyl junkie, Kev Beadle returns to BBE with a 3rd volume of his much lauded ‘Private Collection’ album series. Taking in a wide range of obscure jazz with a distinct nod to the dance-foor, the frst two ‘Private Collections’ are already considered classics by the jazz-dance community. Once again presenting a wealth of ultrarare sounds previously only available to record collectors with very deep pockets, Vol.3 sees Kev inviting us to travel even deeper into the vinyl vaults. Quite a lot has happened in the 3 years since ‘Private Collection Vol.2’ was released, not least Kev’s announcement last year that he was hanging up his headphones. We hope, selfshly, that his retirement won’t last, but either way, the news has given this compilation some added signifcance for us. A founder of London’s legendary Dingwalls and former Wag club resident, Kev has been at the very centre of the UK’s jazz-dance scene for decades, locked in (friendly) competition with the likes of Gilles Peterson, Patrick Forge, Bob Jones and many others on a never-ending quest for that perfect track.
As you might expect, ‘Private Collection Vol.3’ contains its fair share of frenetic, syncopated musical workouts to test the stamina of even the most dedicated dancers, but the album also provides some moments of calm, some smooth Latin grooves like Louis Hayes version of the Freddie Hubbard classic ‘Little Sunfower’ as well as very rare, sought after recordings by Belair, Lee Willhite and the Webster Lewis that have changed hands for big money in recent times amongst the collectors. Whether you are a record collector or a jazz club regular, this compilation represents a chance to fnally own more than a few ‘holy grail’ tunes without breaking the bank and a chance to relive those special moments on the dance-foor. For the rest of us, this is simply a glorious concoction of 70s and 80s jazz, rescued from relative obscurity, painstakingly assembled and presented with a great deal of love.

Key Selling Points:
1. Compiled by Kev Beadle – one of the UK’s original jazz dance DJs, also responsible for compiling other great compilations including the CapitolRare series for Blue Note and Argo/Cadet Grooves series for Charly Records
2. Full press campaign in UK, France and Germany Available from 06.10.2017

Zach Witness – Electric Revival: Rise Of An Outkast Nation
Thursday, July 27th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Zach Witness – Electric Revival: Rise Of An Outkast Nation

Image: 1611150 The visionary talents of multi-instrumentalist Zach Witness have sprouted
full life in this world, lending his sonic touch to the bulk of Erykah Badu’s
latest album, But You Caint Use My Phone (Motown Records). This
project was brought to life with Erykah Badu at the Badudio and World
Witness Studios in Zach Witness’ hometown, Dallas, Texas. This project
put him on a unique trajectory, harnessing his intricately designed fusion
productions into the periphery of an entirely new audience around the
world. His forthcoming debut EP, Electric Revival: Rise of an Outkast
Nation, is the first project to find the light of day after this expansion
phase, initially created as a birthday gift to Zach Witness’ friend and
collaborator, André 3000.
The catalyst behind the creation of Electric Revival has a very specific
initiation point. During the recordings for But You Caint Use My Phone,
Erykah Badu called on André 3000 for collaborative assistance. This
would result in the album’s last track, “Hello,” created at the home studio
Zach Witness has lived in his whole life. This moment in time compelled
Zach Witness to create an offering for André 3000, and this was in the
form of an entire body of music.
Electric Revival takes on the stories of the lives entangled around
society’s most crippling and hopeless of situations. The social and
political intentions of the EP paints a very defined purpose in this context.
Experience the transformative sounds of Zach Witness and his debut
manifesto.

D&G (David & Goliath) – The Scepter & The Sword
Friday, June 30th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on D&G (David & Goliath) – The Scepter & The Sword

Image: 1610728 After the reception of “Battle Anybody” from luminaries like DJ
Premier (#19 on his best of 2013 picks), DJ Evil Dee, DJ Eclipse and
more, Dawhud and Ace-One started working on a proper follow up
to their emceeing anthem. One track turned into an EP which then
quickly turned into a full length project.
The project…
D&G (David & Goliath) – “The Scepter & The Sword”
The concept for the group simply came from Dawhud’s name (David
in Arabic) and Ace-One, who was in the midst of fnishing up his
“Rapmonster” series. Those two elements and the sheer chest
pounding vibe of their prior track led to the creation of “David &
Goliath”. Epic, biblical, and loaded with imagery that paints what the
duo are trying to convey in just a name.
Produced entirely by Dawhud, the duo trade verses over his
landscapes to join forces and reign together. From the opening battle
cry of “Something’s Coming” to the closing of their p-p-p-p-p-Premier
approved track, “The Scepter & The Sword” is a rap Odyssey.
Assisting the duo on this legendary journey are emcees like Masta
Ace, Rock (from Heltah Skeltah), Sadat X, Kokane and Pacewon
alongside longtime friends/emcees Joe Harvey, JO and Otomatik.
With a title like “David & Goliath”… legends should be involved.
Something’s Coming…

• “Battle Anybody” debuted on DJ Premier’s Live From
Headqcourterz show and was put on his “Top 20 Hip-Hop

Los Granadians Del Espacio Exterior – La Onda Cosmica
Friday, June 30th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Los Granadians Del Espacio Exterior – La Onda Cosmica

Image: 1610373 Los Granadians bring to Earth their new probe of expansive cosmic Reggae. The Cosmic Wave! (La Onda Cosmica), the long awaited new album by the underground psychotropical titans.
Young, bold and XXI century classics, having being Where No Man Has Never Reached Before (Donde Ningún Hombre Ha Llegado Jamás – Liquidator Music 2009), Los Granadians have transferred Reggae and Rocksteady galaxies in a tireless race full of anthems registered in a number of singles, EPs and albums for Liquidator Music, and that culminates in La Onda Cósmica, their ffth full length album.
With this new record, the fnal tribute to the miracle of life on our planet, Los Granadians sing to an emotion so real that it wants to seem not interstellar. To brighten this mission they propose a master game of winks and challenges to our ears: suddenly we could think in Coxsone Dodd,
Duke Reid, Lee Perry, Prince Buster, or Lloyd Charmer’s Psychedelic Reggae, but also many postcards from the sea where their artifact has landed: that one that bathes and gives rhythm not only to Jamaica, but also to Puerto Rico, Mexico, Cuba, Louisiana or Colombia. Combinations
that, shaken with the Caribbean style, surprises with ingredients from the seven seas, guessing where we want to go pleasantly delivering all our
clothes, according to progresses in the record grooves.
La Onda Cósmica has been registered at Greenville Studios in Madrid, Spain, using their famous analogíc overdubbing system on tape. Codecs
could be used for describing these 13 songs sound but, if you don’t listen to it, you will still be out of Los Granadian’s Cosmic Wave. The presentation of this new album tour, without a doubt the most important of Los Granadians del Espacio Exterior career, starts now, the machinery
is greased, the so called “party that nobody wants to stop” has arrived.

LP (180g vinyl + Old School Tip On Gatefold Cover + Download Card + Printed Inner Sleeve)

Curiously enough the story of this record begins with a song, which isn’t even featured on it. A song named ‘Guayabas’. One of Guillermo Reuter’s very first free-spirited compositions is one of his two contributions to the fourth album ‘Ese Dia Va A Llegar’ by friend and musician Agustin Pereyra Lucena, in 1975. ‘Guayabas’ was the unintended starting signal for Reuter’s career and was coincidentally the initial spark for this reissue that you, dear reader and listener, are holding in your hands right now.
But perhaps we’d better take one thing at a time and not jump ahead of ourselves. ‘Guayabas’ was the Guillermo Reuter song that first caught the attention of the Notes On A Journey founders Jürgen von Knoblauch and Stefan Leisering. It led them to discover his album ‘Candeias’ shortly thereafter, and a love affair was born. It was a similar story for Jacques Subileau, the producer for the recordings of ‘Ese Dia Va A Llegar’ (and therefore ‘Guayabas’), who was so enamored by this single composition that he proposed Reuter to cut a whole album, made up exclusively of his songs and compositional stylings. The Frenchman with an Argentinian girlfriend, had connections to European record labels like Disco Mediterraneo in Madrid and Disques Espérance in Paris which specialised in World and African music. ‘Candeias’ would be released on both labels, on the Spanish imprint under the name of ‘Sambaiana’, in France as the original title ‘Candeias’, but for inexplicable reasons, with terrible sound quality.
For the 24-year-old musician, it came as a total surprise, the once-in-a-lifetime chance to record an entire album of his own works. Raised by parents, both of who were musicians and teachers with their own school (Instituto Reuter in Buenos Aires), Guillermo Reuter was destined to wander down one road for life – to follow in his father’s footsteps, professionally and musically. Josef Reuter, born in Germany, balanced his work life where he was a dedicated occupation Headmaster with music, not only was he a passionate organist, he was the maestro of his own choir, the ‘Singakademie Buenos Aires’ and a well-known director at Buenos Aires’ world famous “Teatro Colón”. Furthermore, he was a strict and conservative father who massively disapproved when his son embraced modern music like Brazilian Bossa Nova, which back then, was just starting to take the world by storm. Despite, or as a direct result of this, ‘Samba Da Minha Terra’ by João Gilberto was a revelation for the juvenile Guillermo Reuter and shaped his freethinking approach towards music permanently.

Even though Reuter satisfied his parents’ expectations by completing five years of studies in classical musical, his passion for the inauspicious sounds of Brazil never truly disappeared. On the contrary, after meeting the slightly older, Bossa Nova inspired, up-and-coming guitar player and songwriter Agustin Pereyra Lucena on the university campus, the young musician took the proverbial bull by the horns and made a massive leap of faith. On the one hand, he accepted the offer of several studio recordings (1973 ‘Climas’ and 1975 ‘Ese Dia Va A Llegar’), and on the other, he declined the request of his parents to inherit and run the private family school. At this moment in 1975, Guillermo Reuter made a clear, wholehearted decision, aware of all its consequences, and chose his own music as his further purpose in life. Music, which he finally – thanks to Jacques Subileau and ‘Guayabas’ for that matter – could record without compromise and thus give free rein to his creativity.
The recordings of ‘Candeias’ took place shortly after Subileau’s invitation, in October and November 1975, in the Buenos Aires based studio ‘Sound Center’. To realise his vision Guillermo Reuter surrounded himself with four superb musicians, who he knew from previous recording sessions: Agustin Pereyra Lucena on guitar, Uruguayan drummer and percussionist Carlos Carli, Brazilian bass player Darci Soave, and the young flute player Rubén Izarrualde. Reuter himself plays the Fender piano on all tunes (despite “Zimbao“ on which he played the upright piano) as well as 12-string guitar. The idea of adding a horn section to some tracks was quickly scrapped, mostly for financial reasons. Recorded in only a few brisk spring days (which is November on the southern hemisphere), you can feel the sheer enjoyment of the musicians in this masterpiece of timeless, universal music through its unbridled playfulness. Starting with ‘El Tren De Tom’, the album’s first track, where the sound of a departing locomotive announces the beginning of a journey. A journey that winds it’s way through the contagiously melodious, cunningly arranged and in every detail, profound world of Guillermo Reuter and his project Candeias. All of which is overseen by their heraldic spirit animal, the Toucan, which is the bird we first see on the album cover. The name Candeias, which means candles in Portuguese, was chosen democratically by all four participating musicians. The album’s carefree, casual happiness is never superficial or forced. For instance, ‘Paolinho’, driven by Izarrualde’s flute, is rooted in the folkloristic tradition of Northern Brazil and emphasizes Reuter’s almost academic approach towards his compositions. ‘Managua’ employs the Cuban Guajira rhythm and is probably the song of the album that best expresses the harmonic interaction of the four musicians extraordinaire. Throughout the whole album, Reuter’s training in classical compositions interweaving with his love of Jazz and Brazilian
music, in particular, is almost tangible.
In his homeland of Argentina, ‘Candeias’ will never be released. Subileau’s personal connections took the project to Europe, Spain to be precise. Here, with changing line-ups, Reuter played live regularly between 1976 and 1978. His playmates in Candeias (expandable from quartet to septet) include f.e. the Cuban saxophone player Paquito d’Rivera, the US trombone player Bill Smith, the Brazilian percussionist Rubem Dantas and the Spanish flute/saxophone player Jorge Pardo. Further recordings never happened, though.
The European Jazz scene at that time was much too volatile and in turmoil. Talents like Reuter were mostly getting booked as session musicians and were swamped by endless touring, leaving them little time to pursue their own projects. After his father had died towards the end of the 80s, Guillermo Reuter returned to Argentina and only infrequently returned to Europe for occasional live gigs. Back in his hometown, he made a living writing compositions for commercials and from intermittent gigs in local jazz clubs. He operated a music store for some years, worked as a composition teacher and acted as a program manager for various music and live venues in Buenos Aires. During this time he never stopped writing own songs. His fascination for South American folklore and its rhythms, from Brazil via Uruguay to Argentina, continued to increase, even until this day. In 2004 Guillermo Reuter wrote a song, ‘El Gorgojo’ (The Bug), which won the first prize at the international Latin Jazz Contest in La Habana and was praised by the French film music composer Michel Legrand, one of Reuter’s personal idols.
Having now Notes On A Journey, more than forty years after its initial release, introducing ‘Candeias’ to a whole new audience is also in the interest of its creator. For Guillermo Reuter, this album was and is a lifework, which has never lost momentum and significance. It is a record, which simply stands the test of time by bringing pure joy over its full, entertaining length, and is going under the skin at the same time. That’s why for this re-issue the original Spanish pressing has been lovingly restored, preserving the sound quality, letting you listen to it the way it should be heard, in the here and now. With the stunning new quality ‘Candeias’ will find a much bigger following this time round. Come and join the club. Available from 28.07.2017

Back in 2009, Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin started their
Mister Saturday Night loft party in New York City. Almost a
decade later, the party has become an institution, spinning off
the all-walks-of-life Mister Sunday and, this summer, Harkin and
Carter mark their 250th party under the Mister banner.
To commemorate the moment, the Mister Saturday Night
residents have compiled and mixed Mister Saturday Night:
Then and Now, a selection of songs that have come to define
the party – as well as some recent discoveries that reflect
Eamon and Justin’s ongoing commitment to unearthing and
sharing music they love.
The mix begins with Menelik Wossenachew’s stunningly beautiful, highly sought-after version of “Tezeta”, arranged, written
and performed on by Mulatu Astatke.
Eamon and Justin then move on to Soul Bros Inc.’s “Pyramid,”
another grail record, before flipping into deep territory with
the slept-on “On Cue” by ESB. This leads to a trio of songs by
Baba Stiltz, FaltyDL and Marcellus Pittman that have become
ubiquitous at Mister Saturday Night and Mister Sunday.
As the keys ring out in Justin Van Der Volgen’s remix of Soft
Rocks, the climb to the party’s peak begins, making way for a
number of Mister anthems: Kerrier District’s “Let’s Dance and
Freak,” reissued for the first time ever outside of the LP, Dennis
Ferrer’s “The Red Room”, Oni Ayhun, Rroxymore, Jaguar
Woman and Aquarian Jugs’ collaborative “DR-1”, and Alden
Tyrell’s ode to late 80s Chicago house, “All We Need”.
The plane begins its decent with another recent but overlooked
moment of arpeggiation genius by HVCK, blending into early
80s New Jersey disco gold from the obscure Bourbon and
Maxx, finally closing on the highest of highs, with Mystic
Pleasure’s Back Door (Getting Down), a bass-driven, disco
stomper that’s driven many a Mister over the edge.

IDE – Force Fed

Image: 1609111 In celebration of the 10th anniversary of “Force Fed” we have teamed
up with Fat Beats to release this limited edition colored vinyl.
“The debut album from Ide the Shanty One, “Force Fed” is a verbal
maelstrom whipping through the placid seas of 21st century
underground hip-hop with thunderous beats and lightning-strike lyrics.
Ide displays his furious command of the mic over 23 dark and storming
beats, his imaginative and visceral word-warping and unrelenting ?ow
striking listeners with gut-punch directness. Following Jak Progresso’s
“Random Violence” as the 2nd full-length release from Creative Juices
Music, “Force Fed” heralds the charge of this new artist onto the NY
underground scene: Ide the Shanty One. Already earning respect for
expert production and engineering for various underground artists, now
Ide brings forth this manifesto of disgust and impatience with a twisted
culture and reminds listeners why hip-hop is NOT dead. Throughout his
frst lp, he avoids lecturing about society directly but instead proclaims
this gritty mission statement championing subversive artistry and
psychic exploration. This Creative Juices Music release gathers a total
of 10 producers, including Domingo, Deep and Ben Boogz (2 Hungry
Bro’s/Creative Juices), DJ Connect (Elite Fleet), and others, as well as
Ide himself, yet projects a unifed sonic stampede of steel-toed hip-hop.
Joining The Shanty One on the mic are U.G. (Cella Dwellas), Savage
Messiah (formerly of Scienz of Life), Critical, Madness, Alucard, Jak
Progresso, and L.I.F.E.Long (Stronghold), all contributing cinematic
similes in an unrelenting ?ood. Ide’s “Force Fed” is compelling in
its ferocity, and ftting that he is initiating his chapter in music in the
company of these well-known fgures on the underground scene.”Force
Fed” is for hungry listeners, who’ve had enough of the formula, and
don’t mind a little pain if their rap would only get its edge back. This
brazen debut album from Ide the Shanty One is a sure classic for 2007
and another strong product from the Creative Juices Music label.

Image: 1607429 “I take my guitar and strum and sing some tings and blow people’s mind. But I ain’t trying to do anybody’s music. I’m doing what I feel” – Shadow

When it came out in 1984 the far-out album Sweet Sweet Dreams by Trinidad & Tobago’s Shadow (aka Winston Bailey) was described as “way ahead of its time”. Undeservedly it was panned by critics and, unable to reach markets, disappeared into the dusty record collections of a few music aficionados. Now, more than three decades later that cosmic dance-floor UFO is about to take off again, change all that and set the record straight. Remastered and cut by Frank Meritt at The Carvery the album is truly a masterpiece.

But who is this Shadow behind Sweet Sweet Dreams? Shadow is a man of understated magnitude. A truly enigmatic artist, he first emerged in Trinidad and Tobago during the 1970s, becoming a part of the tapestry of Caribbean music and reinvigorating calypso at the time. Calypso, the indigenous folk music of Trinidad and Tobago, has roots in West African kaiso rhythms, French Creole influences, and the hardships endured by the African slaves brought to Trinbago, whose descendants still use it as a tool for satire, self-expression, and social commentary. Calypso has also given birth to several other music genres, including soca, with its uptempo beats and festival context. Shadow effortlessly moves between both.

Shadow came from a humble but musical family and started writing songs as a youth while tending cattle in the fields. To his family’s initial chagrin he chose calypso over church music but his talent and drive were undeniable. In the early days of his career Shadow’s style was cramped when working with some of the more conservative music arrangers who felt that calypso and soca should fit a mould. But after a while Shadow teamed up with more innovative arrangers, including Arthur “Art”de Coteau, who followed their and Shadow’s intuitions resulting in a long line of hits.

“The first time we met for me to arrange his music we had a heated argument on the arrangement for one of his songs, I was theoretically correct but Shadow was musically right. Shadow broke all the traditional musical rules and made his own and that made him a musical giant. He changed the face of Calypso music in 1974 with the release of “Bassman” a tune in which Bass and magnificent horn line took central stage changing Soca music for ever. What Shadow did with his music was to put calypso on the International Dance circuit, giving it a totally different groove. You could take his music and swing it in any direction, Disco, Pop, Calypso, you name it. His music was different from anything that existed before”. – Carl “Beaver” Henderson, one of Trinidad’s veteran producers.

This inert creativeness culminated in Sweet Sweet Dreams which was arranged by Shadow and deals with burning and ever-relevant themes like love and the ups and downs of relationships. a surprising fact for someone mainly known for his satirical and political lyrics. It prompted his manager to wonder if Shadow had written the lyrics while in a state of ‘tabanca’ (a word used in Trinidad and Tobago to describe lovesickness).

Sweet Sweet Dreams was recorded at the legendary SHARC studios, located on a hill in Chaguaramas (near Port of Spain) and despite a fantastic sound and monster Soca-boogie tunes like “Lets get it together”, “Lets Make it Up” and “Way, Way Out” the album was a commercial flop, probably due to the fact that it didn’t sound like anything else coming out of Trinidad & Tobago at the time: It fused a range of different rhythms and new sounds, primarily heavy synth riffs.

Shadow took the album’s lack of success in his stride with usual aplomb:
“When I did Sweet Dreams I expect something could happen. But nothing big happen because I have no big market and no distribution and all this thing now. So I just cool myself and move on to another song. I wasn’t doing just one song. I used to always have plenty songs at the one time. And be writing music”.

What Shadow didn’t realise back then was that the proto-electronic cocktail he had mixed in 1984 would only find the recognition it deserved three decades later. Life has swung full circle: Sweet Sweet Dreams has come true and been elevated to holy grail status becoming one of the most sought-after Caribbean disco records in existence.

For this re-release we carried out extensive interviews with Shadow and the musicians and have included as bonuses exclusive photos from Shadow’s personal collection and the dancefloor filler tune “D’Hardest” was added as a bonus track.

Mark de Clive-Lowe has created a live-remix mixtape weaving from jazz to hip hop
classics, to underground house and broken beat. Recorded and improvised live in
one take, MdCL deploys his drum machine, sample pads, rhodes and keyboards
on-the-fly bringing unique perspective to moments created decades earlier by the
likes of Herbie Hancock, Duke Ellington, and Donald Byrd. From reminiscing
samples that we fell in love with through A Tribe Called Quest and J Dilla, to
reimagining sax great Joe Henderson riding a broken-afro electronic frenzy, MdCL
paints his own vision of what Blue Note means to him.
With guest cameos from rappers Bambu , John Robinson and Illa J, Inglewood
CA-singer Nia Andrews bringing voice to Ronnie Foster’s ‘Mystic Brew’, bass
master Pino Palladino underpinning Herbie’s ‘Oliloqui Valley’ and collaborations
with infamously elusive saxophonist Nomad Pendergrass soundclashing Joe
Henderson and Larry Young…

D4 – Make It Happen (CD and vinyl only)

The cult Peckham soul artist caps the release of three highly praised EPs with an album featuring his most confident songwriting to date. The album paints a collage of dusty drum hits, Sly Stone-esque bass lines and Mamode’s own one-take vocals. Themes go from the personal, such as relationship communication breakdown, to the universal, in the anti-war theme of ‘The Value’.

It remains grounded in a love of syncopated drums, played out in the Dilla-esque ‘Talk To Me’, or the free jazz of ‘Omas Sextet’. Elsewhere, on album opener ‘Bruk Out’, the broken beat scene collides with the groove based jazz fusion of Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters, whilst on ‘Drums Of The Positive’, Mamode channels the “slave island music of my father’s heritage… Maloya, Sega, Nyabinghi”.
“Nowadays music seems to be used more as a crutch for humanity.. Most people seem to have forgotten it’s a life blood of our species. The natural rhythms of our hearts beating and the melodic instrument ‘the voice’ gifted to us at birth, are some physical examples of how inherent music is within our being. We all need this thing we call music. Just as all our ancestors did.”
– Reginald Omas Mamode IV
This past year has seen Mamode perform live and DJ at the relaunch of London’s Jazz Cafe, Shapes, Ronnie Scott’s, Gottwood festival and dates in France, Netherlands and beyond. Headline UK and EU live dates will follow the album’s release in the autumn.
Part percussive ancestral music, part post-Dilla funk, Mamode’s debut album is a galactic, joyful, and above all funky record. It is a statement of intent from this rising underground star.
“A man of simple pleasures: soul sounds, peoples and stories, brothers, friends and family” Gilles Peterson
“Spiritual similarities to the likes of D’Angelo, Theo Parrish, J Dilla, and John Coltrane” Dummy Mag
“Cosmic-soul super talent. You need this guy on your radar” Stamp The Wax
“The equivalent of an aural hug” Boiler Room
“Imbued with the sounds of funk, Latin, soul, African Nubian music” Hyponik
