Legion & Logam – Holding On / Afterthought
Wednesday, August 19th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Legion & Logam – Holding On / Afterthought

Image: 1599046 The name Legion & Logam has resonated since their first output on the Program imprint. With vocal roller ‘House of Cards’ being picked up by some of the dance world’s leading tastemakers, it saw the production trio ascend to a very critical point in their career. And the glass ceiling has been broken, it was only apt for such rising stalwarts to be given the monumental 25th release in the label’s discography.

‘Holding On’ and ‘Afterthought’ also follow their exclusive signing to the Ram Group… Although it was only a matter of time before the USA born artists were taken on by a label of that calibre.

Legion & Logam – House of Cards (ft.Adam Wright) / Solace
Thursday, September 18th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Legion & Logam – House of Cards (ft.Adam Wright) / Solace

Image: 1591826 Few artists can boast the same creative scope as Legion & Logam. Owning a back catalogue of melodic rollers which exemplify their lasting impression, the trio’s technicality often goes unrivalled. It’s unsurprising then, that Program stepped up and showcased this exciting and pivotal release. For anyone unaware of their masterful production style, the artists have introduced themselves in two halves. And both tracks are delicately woven, sonic blasts to the aural senses.

The ride begins with ‘House of Cards’, tightly coiling its energy like a spring and snapping under its audible weight. Firmly compact with booming drum loops sat defiantly amongst the scratch, snap and skit of percussion, the two elements juxtapose flawlessly. The ethereal arpeggio of piano notes leads into the soulful, wispy vocal of Adam Wright, and it adds a delicacy to the record which only emphasises its detail. Nevertheless, it still holds an intimidating depth which begins to surge with power between each layer. Every break subdues your synapses into submission, as they struggle to intercept the icy allure that this track manifests.

Next up is ‘Solace’, a power house of emotion conveyed with each atmospheric pad succession. The melody weaves back and forth through a pumping-bassline, skipping momentarily, before driving the track forward and pulling every sound into a wave of command. The more humanistic elements are brought to the surface, despite being quickly submerged, ghost-like against its musicality. Relentless, dark and brooding, but full of clarity and sentiment, this record consummates a style which the producers are renowned for.

With an obvious nod to the liquid vibe prevalent throughout the dnb community, but turning it into something more distinct and imposing, this was the perfect project for both the imprint and the artists.

So once again… it’s time to get with the Program! Available from 29.08.2014

The Legion – The Lost Tapes
Thursday, September 11th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Legion – The Lost Tapes

Image: 1591556 Straight from The Bronx, the home of hip-hop, comes the trio,
The Legion (Chucky Smash, Molecules and Cee-Low). As signees to
Black Sheep’s One Love imprint, they debuted in 1993 with the brilliant
underground classic, “Jingle Jangle” – an ill piano sample driven track with
a highly quotable finishing verse from Dres of Black Sheep. The Legion
followed up with the sweet laden Roy Ayers looped up single, “Legion
Groove” and their now much sought after debut album, ”Theme + Echo
= Krill” (1994) featuring affiliated acts like Black Sheep, Chi-Ali and
Showbiz & A.G.
After a hiatus for a few years, they resurfaced with the 12-inch,
“Street Thing / Caught Up” (1998) on Legion Records/Fat Beats and some
appearances on Dres’ “Sure Shot Redemption” album. Then the Bronx trio
went quiet.
While Molecules handled dope production for Dres, Mos Def,
Milano, Amanda Marshall and even appeared on P!nk’s “Stupid Girls”,
Chucky Smash’s been hosting radio shows in the BX. The three long-time
friends never stopped doing music together but it was already 2011 when
the trio finally made a dope comeback on the Beneficence collabo track,
“Aim, Fire, Spit”.
“The Lost Tapes” ain’t only a simple compilation of rare and
unreleased tracks, it’s rather a musical documentation of a group that has
been staying in its lane creating raw, uncut, and uncompromising Bronx
flavor for more than two decades now. So this 20-track strong album
includes the rare 12” single only “Freestyle Demolition” from 1994, rare
old and unavailable on CD tracks, unreleased joints and instrumentals plus
3 brand new bangers (“For You”, “Stereo”, “Stereo [Remix]”), produced by
The Legion, Buckwild, and Confidence.
Take a trip down memory lane with these dope Bronx tales and street
beats from The Legion and stay tuned for a brand new album plus the
Molecules & Showbiz “A Bronx Tale” EP.”

Mumdance & Logos – Legion / Proto

Image: 1586004 Enter Mumdance & Logos. Having been introduced to the label earlier this year via ‘Drum Boss’, on Tectonic Plates Volume 4, and generally killing it both together or independently with their releases on the Keysound imprint – the production duo are currently championing a sonic that is set to spread, mutate and progress the sound of the underground. True to the original spirit of Tectonic. With a sense of grand simplicity the duo have managed to seamlessly merge elements of UK hardcore-jungle, pounding, mesmerising techno, gut-wrenching grime and paranoid dubstep into the dancefloor beast that is ‘Legion’. Rising panic is struck immediately from the dissonant strings that lead you into the rhythm, before luring you into an ambushing in the foam a pounding, relentless, weighted kick pattern. The vibe builds until a calculated submarine blip signals the start of an emerging, creeping reese baseline – ready to fully terrorise any dancefloor, anywhere. This is a weapon you want in your DJ bag. 128bpm danger zone. Flip for ‘Proto’, continuing the old-skool jungle vibes and rolling them out, again, at 128bpm. The intro charges up with a muted 4/4 kick pattern, and a demented hoover sample – getting progressively more aggressive as it develops. Then comes the rush of broken breakbeats and 808s, cutting forwards and backwards, unsettling your balance and wrong-footing your expectations. 100% killer.

Three 6 Mafia – Chpt. 2: World Domination (BF RSD)
Tuesday, October 24th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Three 6 Mafia – Chpt. 2: World Domination (BF RSD)

Image: 1615627 Years before their groundbreaking Oscar for “It’s
Hard Out Here For A Pimp,” Memphis’ Three 6 Mafia
were making a splash throughout the South with
self-released, hard albums for a growing legion of
street-rap fans. To anyone listening to their earlier
work today, it will come as no surprise that they
started out as a straight-up “horrorcore” group.
Chpt. 2: World Domination is the group’s third album
overall and their first on Relativity. In many ways, this
was the country’s first introduction to the crew,
centered around producers / MCs DJ Paul
and Juicy J.
The horrorcore aesthetic is never far from the surface with the crew, heard clearly on the rolling, menacing and
downright catchy “Are U Ready 4 Us” (with Michigan’s The Dayton Family), “Spill My Blood” and “Bodyparts 2”
(with guests including Memphis affiliate Project Pat).
“Tear Da Club Up ‘97” was one of the album’s singles, and it resonates in Southern clubs to this day. “Late Nite
Tip,” another single, has similar resonance among fans, showing a more serious side to the group’s lyricism.
“Who Got Dem 9s” (with Project Pat) and the sex-fueled chatter on “Watcha Do” and “Neighborhood Hoe” show
that they have range, even if it’s not what their neighborhood preacher might want to hear (or at least cop to it
in public).
The group was still on the rise in 1997 when this southern classic hit, and had even bigger things ahead of
them. But 20 years ago they also had the template in place to create a sound that would still rock fans and
shake car rims to this day.

AGO (INSTRUMENTAL)

Whitefield, who in the early ‘90s revived the gritty, analogue Funk sounds of the ‘60s and ‘70s with his Poets Of Rhythm, has been working with Now-Again Records for almost a decade, releasing a flock of acclaimed projects with Karl Hector & The Malcouns, Whitefield Brothers, Rodinia and the Original Raw Soul anthology. He first started exploring African rhythms with the Whitefield Brothers in the late ‘90s, continuing in the ‘00s with Karl Hector & The Malcouns. He’s been instrumental in launching Ghanaian Afro Beat/Funk legend Ebo Taylor´s international career, decades after the maestro recorded the landmark albums that have inspired thousands. Whitefield recorded two new studio albums with Taylor and toured in his band between 2009 and 2013, where he met Taylor’s son Henry and percussionist/Singer Eric Owusu.
The trio now front the Johnny! band and find inspiration not only in Ghana’s hypnotic grooves, but also the full frontal fuzz guitar assault heard on the legion of 70s Zambian Zamrock albums recently reissued by Now-Again. Indeed, Whitefield credits his tours with Zamrock godfathers Rikki Ililonga and WITCH’s Jagari Chanda as instrumental in creating the Johnny’s sonic backdrop. The band is rounded out by Turkish drummer Bernd Oezsevim (Woima Collective, Rodinia) and Indonesian bassist/multi instrumentalist Tomi Simatupang (Whitefield Brothers).
This is Dance Rock at the core with the possibilities to stretch out and go into psychedelic realms. The results, spread out over three 7” singles and pressed in a run of 1000 units each, speak for themselves. Every record comes with a download card for WAV files of all six tracks (vocals and instrumentals from each release) and point at a new direction for the music inspired by the Great Continent. One that takes a direction once mocked as derivative and asserts its importance on the globe’s current musical stage.

– Limited edition of 1000. Not to be repressed.
– Comes with download card for WAV files of all three Johnny! 7” singles.
– Die-cut dress jacket and resealable “Japanese-style” sleeve. Available from 25.11.2016

‘We Be All Africans’ is a message of survival. A message of renewal. A message that we are all brothers and sisters. We are all one family, the human family and we need one another in order to survive on this planet that we all share. – Idris Ackamoor

Strut are proud to present the brand new studio album from West coast intergalactic jazz mavericks, The Pyramids, led by their inspirational bandleader, Idris Ackamoor.Alto saxophonist Ackamoor first founded The Pyramids alongside fellow students Margo Simmons (flute) and Kimathi Asante (electric bass) in the summer of 1972. The three were students together at Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio where one of their teachers was renowned pianist, Cecil Taylor. After founding the band in Paris, performing in Holland and embarking on a “cultural odyssey” across Africa, the group recorded three independent albums (‘Lalibela’ in 1973, ‘King Of Kings’ in 1974 and ‘Birth / Speed / Merging’ in 1976) and became renowned for their striking live shows, mixing percussive, spiritual and space-age jazz with performance, theatre, and dance. After migrating to San Francisco to perform on the Bay Area arts scene, they disbanded in 1977 after a final show at the UC Berkeley Jazz Festival.30 years later The Pyramids reunited unexpectedly in 2007 following growing demand for their music from vinyl collectors and jazz fans and embarked on the first of many European tours beginning in 2010 featuring original members, as well as a fresh line-up including renowned percussionist Kenneth Nash. In 2012 the group signed to German label Disko B who released a new album, the freeform ‘Otherworldly’ and all three albums from their rare back catalogue. Idris was promptly presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by DJ Gilles Peterson at his Worldwide Awards and The Pyramids were back, gaining a whole new legion of fans. For their new album, ‘We Be All Africans’, the group traveled to Berlin to hunker down in Max Weissenfeldt’s analogue Philophon studio. The result is a sparkling set of Afro- jazz-funk fusions, from the infectious chants of the title track to the reflective ‘Epiphany’ and the yearning, mournful future single, ‘Silent Days’ featuring the brilliant vocals of Bajka. Weissenfeldt released the first fruits from the sessions, ‘Rhapsody In Berlin’ as a limited 45 during 2015. The album features the full unedited version.

Miles Davis & Robert Glasper – Everything’s Beautiful
Friday, April 15th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Miles Davis & Robert Glasper – Everything’s Beautiful

Image: 1603286 EVERYTHING’S BEAUTIFUL, reimagined interpretations of Miles Davis’ music produced by Grammy Award winner Robert Glasper (who also served as coproducer of the MILES AHEAD soundtrack) with musical guest artists including Bilal, Illa J, Erykah Badu, Phonte, Hiatus Kaiyote, Laura Mvula, KING, Georgia Ann Muldrow, John Scofield and Ledisi, and Stevie Wonder. A visionary exploration of the music of Miles Davis, EVERYTHING’S BEAUTIFUL incorporates Davis’ original recordings into new collaborative soundscapes and will be available Friday, May 27 (the day after Miles’ 90th birthday). The Miles Davis track featuring Bilal ”Ghetto Walkin”, from the upcoming release EVERYTHING’S BEAUTIFUL, premieres today for the first time during Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show on Apple Music.

EVERYTHING’S BEAUTIFUL is beautifully crafted collection produced by Robert Glasper, blending a diverse group of master takes and outtakes from across the incomparable Miles Davis Columbia catalog with an impressive lineup of contemporary artists and musicians to create original interpretations.

”I didn’t want to do just a remix record,” Glasper noted when discussing the 11-song set. ”My idea was to show how Miles inspired people to make new art.” Realizing that ”Miles didn’t have one audience,” Glasper recruited a legion of diverse guest artists to add to the magic of the project including familiar collaborators like R&B musicians Erykah Badu, Ledisi, Bilal and KING. They are joined by British soul singer-songwriter Laura Mvula, hip-hop producer Rashad Smith, Grammy-nominated Australian neo-soul quartet Hiatus Kaiyote, rapper/singer Phonte, rapper/producer Illa J, jazz guitarist John Scofield, who was in Miles Davis’ band, and the legendary Stevie Wonder.

”I am living in the spirit of Miles when I am doing what I’m doing because I am documenting my time period. I’m documenting what’s around me. I’m documenting who I am now, where music is now,” notes Glasper. ”That’s what this project is about. I wanted to do something where we can take some of Miles’ ideas, shake them up, and try to show the influence of Miles and make new things. And that’s the beauty of this whole album. The whole project is based on Miles, but it is based on Miles’ vision, it’s based on Miles’ trumpet, it’s based on Miles’ voice, it’s based on Miles’ composition, it’s based on Miles’ influence, it’s based on Miles’ swag.”

Miles Davis is a rarity: a pioneering superstar who was constantly voyaging into new directions and genres with an ever changing cast of collaborators. Throughout his discography, sweeping change and innovation could happen based on who was in the studio and what they brought to his stunning musical vision. Few American artists have impacted popular music and culture in as broad and long-lasting a way as he did.

By similar design, pianist/producer Robert Glasper has built a career out of a vibrant fusion of R&B, jazz and hip-hop. As the leader of the acoustic Robert Glasper Trio and the electronic Robert Glasper Experiment, he’s pushed the boundaries of each genre he works in to their breaking point. This is the artist whose album, In My Element (2007), featured mashups of Herbie Hancock and Radiohead and tributes to rapper/producer J Dilla. 2013’s acclaimed Black Radio featured collaborations with Erykah Badu, Ledisi, Lupe Fiasco, Yasiin Bey and other artists. Black Radio was also capped by a sprawling cover of Nirvana’s ”Smells Like Teen Spirit” and won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. Most recently, Glasper scored for MILES AHEAD, the Miles Davis film directed by and starring Don Cheadle.

EVERYTHING’S BEAUTIFUL is unlike any other in Davis’ discography. From the familiar (riffs and passages within the catalog) to the obscure (samples of Miles’ in-studio instructions spoken after false starts), Glasper has built something unique but still unquestionably Miles. The cover art was created by Francine Turk and integrates elements of Miles Davis’ artwork. With the cover, Turk creates a visual that is similar to the idea of Robert Glasper taking fragments of Miles music and reinterpreting in a unique and modern way.

Beneficence – Basement Chemistry
Friday, January 8th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Beneficence – Basement Chemistry

Image: 1601530 After dropping back to back classics with “Sidewalk Science” (2011)
and “”Concrete Soul”” (2012), Brick City veteran and Ill Adrenaline
Records co-founder Beneficence unleashes his 6th solo LP
“Basement Chemistry”. Armed with the true sounds of the golden
era Benef drops rejuvenated flows and shares mics with hip-hop’s
elite lyricists. The lineup includes Inspectah Deck (of Wu-Tang Clan),
Masta Ace, MC Eiht, El Da Sensei, AG (of D.I.T.C), Dres (of Black
Sheep), The Legion, Chubb Rock, MindsOne, and Estee Nack (of
Tragic Allies).
Once again the close Artifacts affiliate traps the listener into slick,
thought provoking rhymes backed by hard hitting yet soulful
production from DJ Spinna, Da Beatminerz, 12 Finger Dan,
Confidence, L’Orange, Presto, KON Sci, Jazz Spastiks, and many
more. 19-tracks strong, the dusty and raw sounding full length
displays a perfect blend of street jewels like the Inspectah Deck
laced “Digital Warfare” and the Masta Ace inspiring anthem “When
The Sun Comes”.
The P Original produced banger “Easy As 1-2” opens the album
brilliantly showing Benef’s relaxed but witty cadence. “Basement
Chemistry” travels down many avenues including the battle rap
driven joint “Against The Grain” and storytelling saga “Maui Vacation”.
The album’s formula stays true to the game with obscure samples,
intricate cuts, and official boom bap sound.

Image: 1597195 Champions in the drum & bass world following an illustrious career signed to RAM Records setting the clubs on an unstoppable fire release after release, DC Breaks ‘Faithless feat. Bianca’ brings an energy that will leave listeners gasping for breath whether listening at home or in the clubs.

With their 40+ releases having regularly hit the top of the D&B Beatport Chart, clocking up over 4 million streams while also having remixed a legion of number 1 singles including Tinie Tempah, Lady Gaga, Example as well as remixes for Melissa Steel, Paloma Faith and producing Example’s ‘Never Had A Day’. Drum and bass’ biggest DJ Andy C – the RAM Records label boss has championed the track at all his most recent biggest shows – making Faithless a highly anticipated release.

Picking up previous love and support from the likes of Crissy Criss, Friction, MistaJam, Chase & Status, Sigma, Zane Lowe and Annie Mac, DC Breaks come with a sure fire dance floor killer using grinding basslines paired with melodic synth & vocals perfected by Dan and Chris who make up DC Breaks. Paying homage to their skill for programming perfect D&B by incorporating all aspects of a dance floor crafted track while using melodies that can slow down the crowd before launching them back into a state of bass heavy pandemonium.

Non Phixion – The Future Is Now (Deluxe Edition)
Friday, August 1st, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Non Phixion – The Future Is Now (Deluxe Edition)

Image: 1590748 In collaboration with Uncle Howie Records – Get On Down present the 360-degree story of Non Phixion’s 2002 debut album The Future Is Now (Limited to 800).

The Future Is Now Premium Edition Includes:

– 2 CDs, containing the original album vocal versions and instrumentals
– Three 7-inch singles featuring original 12-inch artwork: “Black Helicopters,” “Drug Music,” and “Rock Stars”
– An 80-page, hard-cover liner notes book featuring dozens of group-sourced photos and archival images, and in-depth interviews with all group members by author Chris Faraone
– Full reproduction of the group’s press-only sampler cassette from 2000 (with early singles, demos, freestyles and promos): “The Past, The Present and the Future Is Now”
– Expanded artwork from Mear One’s original album visuals

By the time Non Phixion’s now-monumental debut album hit in 2002, the group had been on an intense and labyrinthine journey, considering that they had originally formed in 1995. At the same time, it was somewhat fitting for a group that was as explosive and unpredictable as they were talented. But no matter how The Future Is Now had come about and what path they had taken to get there, rap fans jumped on the album at the time, and still revere it to this day.

Featuring MCs Ill Bill, Goretex and Sabac [Red] with DJ Eclipse, Brooklyn’s Non Phixion made their first waves as a group in the mid-1990s with the indie singles “Legacy” (1996) and “5 Boros ” (1997), released on MC Serch’s Serchlite Music. They fit perfectly into an era in New York City that had produced not only the Wu-Tang Clan, M.O.P. and Mobb Deep, but also underground firebrands and peers like Company Flow and the Arsonists. Aggressive, brazen, intelligent, and never predictable, they were impossible to ignore. Not-to-be-missed live shows helped to build their legend and fanbase throughout the end of the ‘90s.

As Chris Faraone explains in the set’s ridiculously comprehensive liner notes book (featuring interviews with all four group members):
Non Phixion inspired fans to simultaneously deploy their smarts, bang their heads, and throw a fist. With their small but lauded body of collective work, Ill Bill, Sabac Red, Goretex, and DJ Eclipse introduced hip-hop to a unique brand of intelligent thuggery that looked past convenient enemies, and brought heat to the terrorists in government and beyond. From the group’s formation in the mid-90s, to their breakup more than a decade later, Non Phixion kicked conspiratorial science that rings even truer now than it did before the aughts …

Looking back on factors that contributed to Non Phixion, it’s clear that the group set itself aside by packing a distinctively hard edge, and by tapping into a seismic range of influences – white poverty, thrash metal – that most rappers avoided. As a result, they attracted a diverse scrum of legionnaires – hip-hop fans with hardcore sympathies, bloodthirsty political animals, wordsmiths, goons, gutter kids, and even highbrow herbs conducting graduate analyses.

After the initial buzz in the wake of their early singles, they were signed to, and subsequently parted ways with, both the Geffen and Matador labels in the late ‘90s and early 2000s. After those experiences, Non Phixion decided – in true and appropriate indie fashion – to go for self. The Future Is Now finally hit in 2002 on the group’s Uncle Howie Records, to fanfare appropriate for one of the ‘90s underground hip-hop movement’s most impressive and hardworking crews.

In addition to new songs like the singles “Rock Stars” and “Drug Music,” the album also included previously-heard tracks from the group’s journey: “Black Helicopters” and “If You Got Love” (both from 2000, originally singles on Matador). Considering the mix of abrasiveness contained therein, the fact that the album went to #65 on Billboard’s “Top R&B / Hip-Hop Albums” chart that year was an impressive feat.

Production on the album matched the MC talent perfectly, with tracks by Bill’s brother and Uncle Howie label-mate Necro, with additional work by an array of legends, including DJ Premier (“Rock Stars”), Large Professor (“Drug Music,” “It’s Us,” and “We Are The Future”), Pete Rock (“If You Got Love”), and JuJu from the Beatnuts (“Suicide Bomb”).

With more of a decade in the rear-view mirror, The Future Is Now Premium edition is the perfect way for diehard fans to finally hear the stories about the forces that made – and eventually tore apart – Non Phixion, and how The Future Is Now came about. Those engaging tales are brought to life even more with the physical specimens provided on vinyl, CD, cassette and the printed page, bringing fans back to an age before iTunes and YouTube, when hip-hop devotees were won over gig by gig, single by single, and radio show by radio show.
