Available from 30.10.2015

The Shacks – Haze
Friday, February 16th, 2018 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Shacks – Haze

Image: 1617447 Fronted by 19-year-old singer/bassist Shannon Wise and 21-year-old guitarist/producer Max Shrager, The Shacks are already well on their way to becoming one
of the year’s big breakouts, and their remarkable debut album, ‘Haze,’ solidifies their status as a band with ability to deliver on the well-deserved buzz.
When Max and Shannon met in high school, a bond was created that has permeated their music since the Shacks first incarnation four years ago. That chemistry
lies at the heart of ‘Haze,’ a record so hypnotic and seductive that it feels more like a whispered late-night secret than a young band’s debut. Produced together by
Shrager and Big Crown co-founder Leon Michels (who’s played with Bradley, Sharon Jones, and Fields in addition to working with The Arcs, Lana Del Rey, and
countless others), the album was recorded in bits and pieces between Shrager’s basement and Michels’ Diamond Mine studio, which the Observer dubbed “the
Shangri La of Soul.”
‘Haze’ opens with the title track, which is, appropriately enough, the first song Shrager and Wise ever wrote together. It’s a spare, smoky tune that shimmers and
sparkles as it shifts in and out of focus, and it’s an ideal gateway into the immersive world of The Shacks. On the breezy “Follow Me,” they channel the infectious
charm of a 60’s girl group, while the soulful “My Name Is” grooves its way through a mesmerizing take on 70’s funk. Much like a dream, the songs often merge the
familiar and the unfamiliar, constructing their own psychedelic reality full of beauty and yearning, all fueled by Wise’s breathy vocals and the unmistakable electricity
of a wildly creative band truly inhabiting their music. “Birds” makes brilliant use of Daptone drum hero Homer Steinwess’s impeccable feel behind the kit, while the
50’s ballad-meets-baroque pop of “Cryin’” tips its cap to Roy Orbison and John Lennon as Shrager takes over lead vocals, and the soulful shuffle of “Texas” belies
a dark and violent undercurrent ripped from the headlines. Through it all permeates an unshakable sense that this is a group performing just for you. “Nobody” finds
the Shacks re-interpreting Phil Spector’s Wagnerian approach to rock & roll, complete with sweeping strings and darkly innocent lyrics. The 13 songs featured on
Haze plays out like the soundtrack to some long lost 16mm film, beckoning you into their grainy, saturated world of analog beauty.
In the short time that they’ve been together, The Shacks have already made an impressive mark. Their hypnotic cover of Ray Davies’ “This Strange Effect”
soundtracked a global iPhone commercial, one which actually stars Wise herself, and their self-titled EP earned the band dates with St. Paul & The Broken Bones,
Chicano Batman, and their Big Crown Records labelmates Lee Fields & The Expressions.

Felix – Tiger Stripes / You Can’t Hold Me Down
Monday, February 5th, 2018 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Felix – Tiger Stripes / You Can’t Hold Me Down

Image: 1617830 We weren’t too familiar with this 1984 Release on Sleeping Bag Records until reading Tim Lawrence’s
Book Hold On to Your Dreams: Arthur Russell and the Downtown Music Scene, 1973-1992. What we learned,
was the “behind the scenes” drama that went on during the recording of this single.
Arthur Russell and DJ Nicky Siano contemplated working together once again after their first
collaboration in 1978 lead to a successful 12” single called “Kiss me Again” on Sire under the Moniker
Dinosaur where David Byrne even played lead guitar. Their second collaboration “Tiger Stripes” came
as the result of Siano convincing the father or a then girlfriend to fund the venture. Arthur wrote
the lyrics, and while Siano remembers remembers the Demo tracks being promising, problems began to
emerge as Studio time began ticking. Russell became annoyed by Siano’s hyperactive personality in the
Studio, while the former Gallery/Studio 54 DJ grew impatient of his collaborator’s constant changes
and money spent in studio time. However according Author Tim Lawrence the feud escalated when Arthur
wanted to introduce a drum machine after the session drummer could not keep the time. As a result,
he ended up scrapping the original tracks which included vocals recorded by Evelyn Thomas. However
the nail in the coffin came when Siano assumed the role of lead vocalist at which point Russell quit
appalled by how terrible he sounded. Although a perfectionist, Russell also suspected Siano had been
using the project as a platform for himself as a vocalist. In any case their project went on with
Siano as lead and newly recorded backup vocals by Maxine Bell. Released on Splash Records in 1984,
Siano is credited as the artist and sole-producer while Russell only agreed to be credited under the
alias Killer Whale.
Not too long after, Sleeping Bag released a 7” promotional copy of “Tiger Stripes” featuring only
Bell as the sole vocalist, a different B-Side and Felix as the artist name. Although Russell did not
credit himself by his real name, he credited the Killer Whale alias for all the writing and production
on the single. There is a 12” on Sleeping bag which credits Siano for production on Tiger Stripes”
but it’s clear from the release of the 7” that Russell wanted to make a statement. Beyond this
peculiar story however, the music itself is worth the note. In a 2014 piece for The Vinyl Factory,
Peter Zummo, one of Arthur Russell’s closest collaborators best describes this release:
Side A: ‘Tiger Stripes’, is a crazy editing job with lots of disparate elements. The opening beats
give little sense of what key it will be in.
Side B: ‘You Can’t Hold Me Down’, is drum machine and conga, rhythm guitar, keyboard, female refrain
and lead vocal, and male chant on “bad little kitten – pounce on you.” There’s no real bass. I like
it not only for the way it sounds but also that it shows that you don’t have to follow the rules.

Image: 1616443 “Hamad Kalkaba and His Golden Sounds 1974 – 1975” I remember the day clearly. I was searching for treasures in a record shop in Yaoundé, the Capital city of Cameroon, when suddenly I came across a 7-inch record with a picture of a young man wearing a traditional hat and bearing the marks of several imposing vertical scars on the side of his face, carved when he was just a boy as a reminder of his heritage in the Musgum tribe of the northern part of the country.

The record contained two songs – ‘Gandjal Kessoum’ and ‘Touflé’ – by an artist I had never heard of before named Hamad Kalkaba. Both cuts were raw classics of fuzzed-out bass, pin-sharp horns, built upon the unshakable foundation of Northern Cameroon’s mightiest rhythm: the Gandjal. The shop owner – who noticed that was listening to the same record over and over again – finally said to me ‘There is another single with a green cover of the same artist, if I am not mistaken’.

Over the next six years I searched for that ‘green cover’ and finally found it in a record collection belonging to an old bar in Parakou in northern Benin. While most of the records had been beaten and worn by a life spent in the jukebox, this one had been sitting in its paper sleeve for forty years, untouched and unplayed, seemingly waiting for us to pick it up and rip the two soulful Gandjal tunes from it, the masterpieces ‘Fouh Sei Allah’ and ‚Tchakoulaté’.

These two records, plus a third simply named ‘Nord Cameroon Rhythms’ constitute the entire discography of Hamad Kalkaba. Neglected for decades by all but the most devoted collectors of Afro music, Hamad Kalkaba and the Golden Sounds at long last gathers together the body of work of one of Cameroon’s forgotten geniuses.

But unlike many musicians who emerged from nowhere, recorded a few singles and vanished again, Kalkaba hadn’t disappeared. Far from it. He was a distinguished public figure, a retired Colonel in the army of Cameroon, and a former member of Cameroon’s Olympic Selection Committee. When we tracked him down he was serving as president of the Confederation of African Athletics. And Although Kalkaba’s job kept him busy, and he seemed initially dismissive of the music he’d made as a young man, he turned out to be an enthusiastic ally in this project. He arranged interviews, helped fill in the blanks and, when we finally met him in Yaoundé in 2016, provided us with photographs, lyric sheets and notes.

During the interview Kalkaba explained how the songs recorded in the mid 1970s were part of a movement, a movement initiated by musicians from all around Cameroon who, with the help of keyboards, drum kits and electric guitars, had started to modernize the traditional rhythms of their regions. For Kalkaba it was no different and backed by his band the Golden Sounds, devoted himself to the promotion of the sounds of northern Cameroon.

One of the aims of Analog Africa is to showcase the colorful diversity of styles that exist in Africa and its diaspora and today we are very proud to be able to give these Gandjal tunes their first worldwide release.

Image: 1611995 • Jazzman Records releases the third volume of its Jukebox Mambo compilation series, artfully selected by DJ Liam Large.
• A journey through the popular American music of the 1950s influenced by exotic rumba and Afro-Latin seasoned rhythm and blues.
• Featuring rarities and unearthed gems from Percy Mayfield, Roy Gaines, Chuz Alfred, Monogram Caribbean Orchestra, and many more.
• The twenty-four track compilation comes complete with in-depth track notes and photographs, as well as a deluxe double vinyl edition with gatefold sleeve, and a super limited edition vintage style 6 x 10″ book set – with unique artwork and four exclusive bonus tracks

Since the release of their first Jukebox Mambo compilation album in 2012, Jazzman Records, with the curatorial expertise of DJ Liam Large, have been opening ears and minds to the delights of Latin-tinged Rhythm & Blues. This, the third release in the series, sticks squarely to the tried and tested formula of its predecessors, combining a crate-digger’s passion for the obscure with an ear for instant dancefloor crowd pleasers.

In a congested field of R&B comps, Jukebox Mambo stands out uniquely in shedding light on the era of Latin American and Caribbean influence, a sensual rhythmic shift which continues to be felt in modern music today.

Opener, The Emperor’s ‘Tough De Times (Things Getting Tough)’ is a classic example of Large and Jazzman’s idiosyncratic capacity to bring striking singularities to light, a beguiling and seductive blend of jazz, blues and Trinidadian calypso. Other highlights include the slinky rumba-blues of Percy Mayfield’s lustful ‘Loose Lips’, the only known recording by female blues shouter Ethel Boswell on the track ‘No More For You’, and Chuz Alfred’s powerful rendition of the Duke Ellington standard ‘Caravan’. Elsewhere, Jukebox Mambo 3 is dominated by virtuosic performances, from the smooth tenor vocals of Roy Gaines to the polyrhythmic swing of the Monogram Caribbean Orchestra, and the Syrian-American jazz stylings of Eddie Kochak.

The compilation comes with in-depth track notes and photographs, is available as a deluxe double vinyl tip on gatefold as well as a super limited edition vintage style 6 x 10″ book set – with unique artwork and four exclusive bonus tracks.

Lovingly compiled, artfully arranged and expertly annotated, Jukebox Mambo Volume 3 is another immersive gaze into an era of musical history that still carries a unique influence today. This one is for the crate diggers and music lovers alike!

Peter Gordon & Love Of Life Orchestra – Condo

Foom presents the new Peter Gordon & Love of Life Orchestra EP, Condo.
“Condo” (the title song) is a little-known gem from Peter Gordon’s catalog,
pairing David Van Tieghem’s motorik drum programming and found
percussion with the transparent and vibrato-free vocals of Rebecca
Armstrong (Armstrong was also a member of Steve Reich’s ensemble, and
contributed vocals to the definitive ECM recordings of Steve Reich’s Music
For 18 Musicians, and Tehillim). Prior to them working together, Nik Colk
Void (of Factory Floor) wrote to Gordon that: “(Condo) completely catches
my personality and when I feel disillusioned or need comfort, I always put it
on, and it makes me feel good and strong.” Their correspondence
culminated in the Peter Gordon & Factory
Floor collaboration, Beachcombing.
The EP is comprised of a remastered version of the title track, “Condo”
(which originally appeared on 1981’s Casino EP), along with 3 previously
unreleased tracks from the same 1981 sessions. “Neighbors” uses “Condo”
as its foundation, with Peter Gordon’s solo on top, “Candy Store” sees the
full band iteration of the Love of Life Of Orchestra, including Rebecca
Armstrong on vocals, Fred Maher on guitar and Bill Laswell on bass, “East
Village” relies only on synthesizers and electronic percussion, with a chorale
layered upon a deep groove. The EP closer, “Condominium,” is a nod to
those DJs who would play the title track at a slower tempo. The EP’s titles
are a comment on the gentrification of NYC’s East Village, which began in
the early 1980’s and continues to this day, driving out low-income residents,
including artists, writers and musicians, such as Gordon, Van Tieghem and
Armstrong.
[Background: In 1981, Peter Gordon joined up with video artists Kit
Fitzgerald and John Sanborn to form Antarctica, a label devoted to releasing
new video music work. The Bologna-based Expanded Records label
released the CASINO EP (on which Condo originally appeared) with the
Antarctica imprimatur, in 1982. Gordon and Van Tieghem returned to
Aquarius Studios in Geneva in (where they had recorded Peter Gordon &
Love Of Life Orchestra’s Genevaalbum the year before). Some of the tracks
from the Geneva II sessions appear on the Antarctica videos, NEW MUSIC
FROM ANTARCTICA LP and CASINO. The Antarctica label was unable to
sustain itself, however, which left a few tracks from the Geneva II sessions
unreleased until now.] Available from 13.10.2017
