“Chapters” is the captivating debut album by hotly tipped Japanese multi-instrumentalist and producer Anchorsong, on Tru Thoughts. BBC Radio 1’s new music guru Huw Stephens, who has heartily championed Anchorsong since seeing him at SXSW in 2009, recently lifted the lid on the LP with an upfront play of the music, fuelling the buzz for […]

The story of James Pants is an unlikely one. Image: 1605108 Jay Dee a.k.a. J Dilla is widely regarded as one of the greatest producers in hip hop history.
The E-Mu Systems SP-1200 drum machine and sampler was the first electronic instrument
Jay Dee worked with while crafting the incomparable styles and sounds which defined the
early stages of his legendary production. The SP-1200 was his primary tool of choice at the
inception of his career as he created classics for early Slum Village, The Pharcyde, A Tribe
Called Quest, Busta Rhymes and many others. However, as his career moved forward Dilla
began to work on an Akai MPC. And that’s the focus of this collection. The 15 cuts featured
on this vinyl edition are from the groundbreaking “Batches” collection, but were crafted by
Dilla using the MPC.
The MPC Dilla utilized to create the material heard here was recently donated to the
Smithsonian for their National Museum of African American History and Culture scheduled
to open to the public in 2016.
This release is more than a collection of Dilla’s unheard works, it’s a glimpse inside the mind
of a creative genius, a view into Dilla’s artistic process and a must have for any who call
themselves a fan of his musical legacy.

Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers – I Jool Omo / Talking Drum
Wednesday, February 25th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers – I Jool Omo / Talking Drum

Image: 1595666 Ginger Johnson’s life is one of the greatest untold stories of African music in Europe. A Nigerian immigrant to London in the late 1940’s, who quickly became the rhythmic backbone to the big band of The Edmundo Ros Orchestra and the jazz group of Ronnie Scott. By the mid 1960’s Ginger was considered the only Afro-Latin percussionist to book, which is why he played with everyone from Georgie Fame, Quincy Jones through to The Rolling Stones.

Ginger Johnson was also mentor, guide, guru and father figure to a young Fela Kuti. Gingers house in London was a vibrant hub of African music activity for Fela and an entire host of African & Caribbean musicians who would gather there to catch up, eat and jam for hours on end. To Fela, and all the younger musicians who gravitated around Ginger, he was simply known and addressed as ‘Father’.

Ginger was also instrumental in the beginnings of The Notting Hill Carnival. His own venue, Club Iroko in North London, was a creative hub for groups like Osibisa, Cymande, and also a welcome hang out for visiting legends like Art Blakey, Roland Kirk, and Elvin Jones.

I Jool Omo is an infectious, happy rhythmic extravaganza, where layers of pulsating drums are perfectly meshed with jazzy flute, saxophone and a hypnotic guitar riff whilst the collective vocal lifts the entire track into a high energy, mesmerizing groove. As the chief exponent of the African talking drum, the thunderous beat that opens Talking Drum leaves you in no doubt as to the power and impact of Gingers skilled drumming.

Ginger Johnson’s music is built upon a bedrock of African drums, hi life, and jazz, and is the forerunner of Afrobeat – and Gingers direct and vital influence upon the genre’s undisputed champion Fela Kuti is just one part of a fascinating and underappreciated story that only now is being recognised for its significance.

Tommy Guerrero – Soul Food Taqueria
Tuesday, November 21st, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Tommy Guerrero – Soul Food Taqueria

Image: 1616638 It’s rare that a certain sound is entirely an artist’s own. Although undeniably a stew of impeccable influences – from blues to folk to Latin to dusty funk, soul and hip-hop – one cannot hear a Tommy Guerrero song without immediately recognising it as his – and his only.

The cult skater from San Francisco is globally renowned as one of the original members of the legendary “Bones Brigade” team. And as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, his laid-back soul is beloved by all who’ve basked in its blissful glow.

There’s something elemental about this music that really stirs the soul. Strikingly beautiful and instantly addictive, it’s a kind of funk-fuelled, melody-driven, groove-based magic. There’s a serenity and heart in the playing that radiates warmth and splendour, as if crafted for endless sunsets. His albums that surfaced on Mo Wax at the turn of the century have been treasured since their release and it’s two of his most vital LPs that we’re honoured to reintroduce.

The originals were quietly pressed on to a single piece of vinyl so we’ve worked closely with Tommy this year to bring you these fresh, limited editions. They have been lovingly remastered, cut nice and loud on to heavyweight double vinyl and presented in deluxe gatefold jackets.

Soul Food Taqueria continued Guerrero’s guitar soul but represented a step forward with its polished production and greater complexity of instrumentation. Denied the promotion it deserved upon release, it flew under the radar. It is now the most wanted record of his wondrous back catalogue.

Guerrero’s atmospheric touch and subtle guitar provide lush, glimmering pieces of musical texture. Within his spacious compositions, uniquely arranged instruments flourish alongside each other to create a languid soundtrack for halcyon days.

As ever, the diversity on display is beguiling. From bossa nova, samba and cumbia rhythms to understated folk, funk and soul grooves, this is another exotic set of mellow gold, perfectly represented by ESPO’s memorable artwork. Furthermore, the title’s hybridity reflects the intoxicating sweep of stylistic flavours served up, reminding us that, however tricky it is to categorise Guerrero’s special blend, it’s always a pleasure to indulge in something so creative and adventurous.

Dubby, bass-heavy instrumentals give way to moody folk-soul – witness “It Gets Heavy”, featuring melancholic vocals from Gresham Taylor – whilst “Thank You MK” is a gentle ode to the tropics, featuring ethereal instrumentation, bright bass and warm, jazzy guitars. The second half in particular contains a number of stunning ambient tracks – check “Lost Unfound”, “Another Brother Gone” and “Broken Blood” – built around minimalist, laid-back grooves and detailed guitar orchestrations which wouldn’t be out of place on the latest Jonny Nash release.

Guerrero closes this flawless set with a moment of true beauty. Restrained and graceful, “Falling Awake” is a pared back piece containing meditative guitar melodies set against melancholic piano arrangements. It brings proceedings to the most peaceful close. Seductively good, it reminds you just how great simplicity can sound.

Latyrx – The Album (20th Anniversary)(BF RSD)
Tuesday, October 24th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Latyrx – The Album (20th Anniversary)(BF RSD)

Image: 1615480 2-LP gatefold on swirled red/white and blue/white vinyl, with two bonus songs and an exclusive Black Friday RSD 7” of “Lady Don’t Tek No”
(produced by DJ Shadow)

20 years after its initial release, the Bay Area uber-classic Latyrx: The Album – lyricists Lyrics Born and Lateef The Truthspeaker, with production from DJ Shadow, Chief Xcel and Lyrics Born – still stands as a seminal recording. It has gone on to resonate with successive generations of listeners, and influence countless artists. Recorded over a two-year period, it was the first full-length release from the legendary Solesides collective, and encapsulates a highly creative and influential time in hip-hop, frequently dubbed The Golden Age. Over the course of the original release’s 42 minutes, not only can you hear Lyrics Born and Lateef literally growing into themselves as artists, but you can also hear the germination of the Solesides sound, first given birth at California’s UC Davis in the early ‘90s, driven by brothers-in- beats-andrhymes Blackalicious and DJ Shadow.
Partially by design, and partially out of necessity, Latyrx—and the Solesides crew as a whole—became trailblazers. Lyrics Born remembers (in this set’s lengthy liner notes), “We really wanted to explore. New styles, new subject matter, new textures, new vocabulary. It came down to even wanting to do words in the English language that you had never heard in a rap song before. It was all about pushing.”
And push they did, with game-changing lyrical exercises like “Say That,” “Balcony Beach,” “The Wreckoning” and “The Muzappers Mix.” Beyond cuts that back-in- the-day fans know from the original sequence, the two bonus tracks included in this edition are: “Looking Over A City” [produced by El-P], originally released on the Quannum compilation Spectrum. And “The Last Trumpet,” which closes this new deluxe edition. Originally appearing on the 2003 Lyrics Born solo album Later That Day, it’s one of Latyrx’s most-realized collaborations, and one of their most overtly-politically-themed songs. This deluxe, 2-LP issue of Latyrx: The Album is a must for longtime fans and newly-initiated listeners alike, with in-depth liner notes by veteran Bay Area journalist Eric Arnold (including input from Lyrics Born and Lateef The Truthspeaker) and packaged in a gatefold format. And for Black Friday Record Store Day only, 1,000 lucky buyers will have the addition of a first-time-ever 7-Inch of the group’s 1997 single “Lady Don’t Tek No,”produced by DJ Shadow. Available from 24.11.2017

Ryan Porter – Spangle-Lang Lane (BF RSD)
Tuesday, October 24th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ryan Porter – Spangle-Lang Lane (BF RSD)

Image: 1615588 Running in parallel with the powerful wave of transformation that occurred
with the advent of recording technology in the 1800s, children’s music has
been a critically important part of the evolving pace of modern culture.
Through the entire body of children’s music, few have truly deviated from
the normal harmonic and melodic structures of past composers. This is
about to change in the fall of 2017 as West Coast Get Down co-founder
Ryan Porter will present Spangle-Lang Lane, a collection of music
that revamps and puts a facelift on some of the world’s most beloved
children’s songs.
The ethos of Spangle-Lang Lane equally lives in the visual realm,
coupled with puppets and a flm series that takes on the life of the West
Coast Get Down and various jazz luminaries. From episode to episode,
you can expect to see main characters Ryan Porter and Crazy Jake,
along with puppet versions of Duke Ellington, Kamasi Washington, Louis
Armstrong, Brandon Coleman, Tony Williams, Terrace Martin, Miles
Davis, Thundercat, John Coltrane, and many others. As the in?uence
of Sesame Street started to flter into Ryan Porter’s dreams, he quickly
sought out the right tools and knowledge for creating his own puppets.
Ryan adds more detail on how the puppet world of the album formed.
“The vision for having puppets as part of Spangle-Lang Lane came
from the in?uence of the magical world of Jim Henson, but I also had a
dream where I could see all of these puppets so vividly playing gigs and
recording. I had these dreams so much that I looked into puppet making
classes so that I could learn how to make these characters that I saw so
vividly in my dreams. After a few years of learning how to make puppets,
which is not an easy thing to do, I fnally made prototypes of the puppets
that I had seen in my dreams. These puppets are the ones that I use
to flm in my videos to help teach kids music lessons and history about
older musicians that aren’t with us any longer. The type of musicians that
made a huge impact on how music sounds today, revamped through the
power of puppetry.”
For the Spangle-Lang Lane record release event, Ryan Porter will take
the puppets he’s created and the momentum of the video series for a
special concert in Los Angeles this fall. The puppets will take the stage
with Ryan to perform the music off the LP, striving to create a unique
concert experience the jazz world has never seen. This fall will serve as
a very special stretch of time for Ryan Porter and Spangle-Lang Lane,
bringing to light a lifelong pursuit that will have the power to beneft
thousands of people across current and future generations. SpangleLang Lane is an achievement unlike any other, serving as the latest
chapter of the West Coast Get Down’s growing legacy and the beginning
of Ryan Porter’s tenure in the spotlight.

3. Itsy Bitsy Spider
4. Little Boy Blue

• “The LP is something that I would like to see impact children in a creative way, helping them to see the power of positive change through music.” – Ryan Porter Available from 24.11.2017

Lyman Woodard Organisation – Saturday Night Special (180g/Gatefold)
Monday, October 16th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Lyman Woodard Organisation – Saturday Night Special (180g/Gatefold)

Image: 1615762 In association with DJ Amir’s 180 Proof Records, BBE is honoured to present another gem from the small yet significant Strata catalogue. A precursor to New York’s Strata East, Detroit’s Strata Records was founded in the late 1960s by former Blue Note artist Kenny Cox. Starting life as a music-led community organisation, coffee shop studio and venue, Strata released only a few titles as a record label, gaining the imprint a cult following among record collectors and jazz lovers across the globe. Possibly the best known of Strata’s releases, The Lyman Woodard Organization’s ‘Saturday Night Special’ is rightly heralded as a jazz fusion classic. Recorded in 1975, ‘Saturday Night Special’ features organ, electric piano and Mellotron by bandleader Lyman Woodard alongside guitar and bass by Ron English, with drums and percussion by Leonard King, Bud Spangler & Lorenzo “Mr. Rhythm” Brown respectively. Despite the fairly sparse instrumentation, ‘Saturday Night Special’ lays down an impressive wall of sound, powerfully atmospheric in its almost low-fi aesthetic. Hinting at more traditional jazz, rhythm & blues, afrocuban styles and more, the uniqueness of this album is surely in its feel: summoning up images of a vast industrial landscape, assembly lines and urban decay. In other words, this record sounds like Detroit. No great album artwork is complete without a good story to match, and ‘Saturday Night Special’ does not disappoint. Snapped by photographer and political activist Leni Sinclair (responsible for seminal pictures of Miles Davis, Fela Kuti and John Coltrane and many others), the cover image shows the contents of Lyman Woodard’s pockets placed on the hotel bed after a show: cigarette papers, cash and a pistol. Following Woodard’s death in 2009, this incredible album was reissued in highly limited numbers by Wax Poetics, now just as hard to come by as the original pressings. It’s our pleasure to make this important and influential chapter in the story of contemporary jazz available on vinyl once again.

For Fans Of: J Dilla, Nostalgia 77, Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers, Miles Davis.

D5 – This Light – Omas Sextet

The 20 track album draws influence from the world around us, everyday life. As we witness rising poverty, global events, political and ethnic divisions – these factors prompt some of Reginald’s themes and call for humanity to recognise we are all interconnected. “We are all related. We’re all brothers and sisters with common ancestry, common history and a common origin regardless of race, geographic location or belief systems. Love and compassion are universal feelings/practices we all should embrace and apply to all aspects of our lives, our interactions and our relationships, regardless of the kinship”.

Reginald Omas Mamode IV ‘Children Of Nu’ encompasses Reginald’s musical and sonic influences – Afro Roots music through to jazz and soul. It draws from Africa as much as the west, an attempt to make a record that can exist in many contexts, the present, the future and past. Recorded with freedom – most tracks remain
from the first take – the process of creating ‘Children Of Nu’ was an open ended development from a natural, intuitive, starting point. Made with minimal thought of how tracks would end up, the music was led through the creative process. Born of a moment, each track is an attempt to capture that instance, mood, feeling or subject.
Last year’s self-titled debut album was warmly received, collecting critical success including Mojo (“A brand-new-retro delight”), Mixmag (“Peckham beat brilliance”), Record Collector (“Equal parts D’Angelo to J Dilla”), The Wire (“Soul music turned all the way inward”) and a Bandcamp Album of the Day (“Breathing lifeforms that are equally steeped in hip-hop, funk, soul and jazz”). It was also nominated for ‘Album of the Year’ at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards 2017.
Along with Mo Kolours, Jeen Bassa, Henry Wu, Al Dobson Jr and Tenderlonious, he’s helped forge in the 22a co-operative that The FADER calls “a kaleidoscopic patchwork of hip-hop, house, and groove investigations bound by one thread: a timeless belief in rhythm as a universal language”.

Image: 1611952 Known to many as the group Y Society, Insight the Truncator and Damu the Fudgemunk celebrate 10 plus years of friendship and a creative partnership that hold the two in high esteem of their fans.

The MC & producer’s new 7″ is a compelling display of why the duo have always been at the top of their game despite their reserved output since debuting as a team in 2007. Surprising the world at the top of the year with their full length, “Ears Hear Spears” was a great way to sound the alarm for the excitement of new activity.

Selective by nature, Insight and Damu’s calculations have served advantageous in making moves and presenting listeners with the right music at the right time. The latest incarnation of this truth can be heard in the previously unreleased b-side track entitled “Pyramids to the Ghetto.”

Although it was recorded in 2008, it was archived and remained unreleased until now. Now in 2017 this particular song couldn’t be any more relevant in how the artists analyze the effects racism of the past & present and it’s correlation to black plight throughout the Americas (both Insight & Damu drop verses on this track).

Continuing narratives of such legends as Public Enemy and Jeru the Damaja in which the track title quotes, the group individually presents short essays in rhyme form that give a candid account of what they’ve witnessed as black U.S. citizens living in the 20th and 21st Century. Not only are the social effects on the table for examination, but the positive and negative impacts a racist society has had on black contributions to art and culture are discussed.

For the songwriters, “Pyramids to the Ghetto” is therapeutic in which harsh realities are confronted in an unapologetic manner contrasting the previous socially charged material in Insight and Damu’s back catalog. For the listeners, it’s a history lesson and a call to motivate us all that history doesn’t always have to repeat itself even when it’s been the norm for centuries. Adversity and oppression historically have hold some back and made some stronger, but acknowledgement is the first step of progression.

The A-Side, “Never Off (On & On)” speaks on just that. It’s a roadmap to dealing with everyday adversity, maintaining faith in self and striving to reach your full potential. Insight presents sermons of encouragement to the everyday person over the Fudgemunk’s uplifting beat. The producer chimes in on the chorus with a few words of his own that insists to keep on your path and never fall off. The old saying goes, “Life ain’t easy”, but the group knows success is not unrealistic. “Never Off (On & On)” was the debut single from the debut album, “Travel at Your Own Pace” which has remained a staple in Insight the Truncator’s and Damu the Fudgemunk’s legacy. This the song’s first official reissue and it’s first appearance pressed on a 45.

Tortoise – The Catastrophist Tour Book (Ltd.CD+Buch)

Image: 1611549 Photographer Andrew Paynter on the project :
This book came about from the long term relationship I’ve had with
both this band and their label, Thrill Jockey. I frst came to meet some of the
members through mutual friend, Tommy Guerrero. Over the years I started
to contribute occasionally as a creative collaborator. The band used several
of my photographs for their ‘Lazarus Taxon’ packaging. Then, in 2010 they
commissioned me to both direct a music video from ‘Beacons of Ancestorship’
and to also art direct & contribute images from my ‘SF Lines’ work. The band
also used other images for additional 12 inch records and then seven years
went by. I did think often about the idea of going on the road with them, but
was patiently awaiting a return to the stage, as they took a long break between
records. So the idea to do something long form became a reality. Once it
was set, I organized to jump on the road with the band to cover the entire
West Coast of North America and with an addition of a trip to Arcosanti,
Arizona. I brought three cameras, Leica M6, Hasselblad X-Pan and a Pentax
67. I only shot b&w flm and I kept my ideas simple and did my best to not
force situations, but to simply capture them from the perspective of an insider.
My craving to shoot from the hip in a reportage fashion was fnally fulflled on
this 10 day project. I’m proud to say, this is my very frst book.
Tortoise’s Douglas McCombs on touring and the live experience:
Twenty fve years ago in the early days of Tortoise there was a
perception that we were a recording project. This perception was probably
exacerbated by the fact that we barely played any live shows in the frst three
years. The reality is that we were slow in getting our band up and running due
to a variety of logistical circumstances, internal and external.
Performing live was always a priority and a prime motivator in forming the
band in the frst place. By the time opportunities arose for us to tour in a self
sustaining manner we couldn’t have been happier. This is what we wanted to
do, and thankfully the audience showed up.
Presenting our slightly unconventional material was occasionally a challenge.
We had to lug around more equipment than your average band and often
had to deal with temperamental synthesizers and samplers that would fail at
inopportune moments. Still, it was exciting and very rewarding.
These days a band at our level makes most of our living by playing live shows.
It’s no secret that record sales are substantially lower than they used to be. At
the same time we are all maintaining families that we didn’t have twenty years
ago which makes organizing a tour exponentially more diffcult. Still, every
time we step on a stage we are trying to invest ourselves in the performance as
much as possible so that we can give the audience a unique experience. We
want you to know that we consider it a privilege to play our music for you.

Simply put, Tortoise has spent nearly 25 years making
music that defes description. While the Chicagobased instrumental quintet has nodded to dub, rock,
jazz, electronica and minimalism throughout its
revered and in?uential seven-album discography, the
resulting sounds have always been distinctly, even
stubbornly, their own.

home town’s history of improvisers and fusionists,
Tortoise is an American underground institution.”

Love makes the world go around. “two”, the second album by The Soul Session, is
full of love. Ralph Kiefer, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and producer
from South Germany embarks on a stylistically diverse journey into Soul, Jazz,
Funk and World Music.
Being a highly respected session musician in the jazz as well as the crossover
scene, Kiefer made a serious impact in 2011 with “one”, the first Soul Session
album. “one” was built on a solid backbeat of Soul, Hip Hop and Funk, while “two”
now takes a step further into a spiritual and eclectic dimension. “Quantraversa”
featuring the voice of Las Vegas based neo-soul queen Georgia Anne Muldrow is
the mind- blowing opener of this album, a truly deep and intense rhythmic
statement. Quantraversa is a word which you will not find in any dictionary, but
that is not the point, says Ralph Kiefer. “This album is a journey to the inner self.
The recording process was like meditation. I often started with a loop, or an idea
for a melody. It evolved from there and I simply let it happen. When I involved the
lyricists and vocalists, my drafts sometimes took a completely different paths and
ended in something unexpected and beautifully new.”
“The Passage” is a prime example of Ralph Kiefer’s visionary working style. “I
mainly work with my mobile studio. Nowadays you can virtually record every
instrument in any place you like, you just need a good microphone. Some of my
guest vocalists also recorded their part in their own studio.” This way Tokunbo
Akinro, the voice of Tok Tok Tok, turned “The Passage” into a futuristic, haunting
soul tune. “Live Your Life”, introducing Anaj, works nicely as a kind of theme tune
for “two”. Here you have a lose groove which is tight at the same time, keeps in
control and simultaneously lets it loose. And then there’s “Wish The Beat To
Never Stop”. Ralph Kiefer is especially happy about this track. “I am a fan of Omar
since his first album on Talkin’ Loud, I am very proud that he contributed to my
album.” With his unique UK Soul stylings Omar fits perfectly to the brilliantly
understated and well-informed Soul Session sound.
It’s the two suites which are central to “two”. “Kalimba Suite” kicks off with a
stripped down piano, percussion and Kalimba session. Then “Steely Dan” gives it
away in its title, sounds like it will move straight into “Do It Again”, but then it does
not and turns into a funky Soul Session style instrumental jam. “Transformation” is
the perfect ending for “Kalimba Suite”, sticking with the Rhodes, bringing in more
synthesizers and getting quite cosmic. “Liberation Suite” has Anaj coming in
again. “Got To Go Where To Go” is pure bliss and funky fun. “Samba De Alfana”
is a spiritual and deep Brazilian, irresistible jazz-house dance floor mover. With a
motto like “Liberation for the nation” and a vocoder meeting a Caribbean style
“Funky Nassau” groove you will agree: “Open up your mind!”
“You Are Everything” uses a Horace Silver style piano motif, then adding the
sampled voice of philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti: “His philosophy is very central to
my creative process. In the troubled times we live in I think his message is more
relevant than ever. Without self-knowledge there is no basis for peaceful thought
and action.” Fatma Tazegül closes the album in taking “Never Let Me Go” to
another level with her soulful gospel voice. Think of the open mindedness and
global funk and fusion rhythm in the Seventies, but also of the Acid Jazz
movement during the Nineties and you get the picture of what “two” is about love,
peace, being true to yourself and getting involved.

Motor City Drum Ensemble – DJ-Kicks
Saturday, August 5th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Motor City Drum Ensemble – DJ-Kicks

Image: 1564643 Motor City Drum Ensemble’s DJ Kicks mix is the latest installation into the outstanding discography of Danilo Plessow, and is not to be missed. The addition of a selection of MCDE exclusive tracks, and the majority of tracks being rare pieces of music from Danilo’s personal collection make this a mix of not only exceptional mixing capability.

Danilo was always incredibly young with things. He started producing at the age of eleven—“way too early” as he jokes—having his first release out just five years later: Inverse Cinematics’ “Slow Swing”, released on Pulver Records in 2002, and ended up finding its way into Ricardo Villalobos’ record bag as well as onto one of the first Fabric mix CDs. An album under the same name and a string of EPs followed. Dailo’s latest releases, the Motor City Drum Ensemble’s Raw Cuts series in 2010, had the house music world responding strongly to the charmingly fresh and dirty sounding tracks, all mixed down in spontaneous two-hour sessions. Danilo has also released on top labels ranging from 20:20 Vision to Rush Hour as well as his own MCDE and Four Roses imprints, produced for Ben Westbeech and Rainer Trüby and never ceased to amaze with his challenging remix work for artists like Caribou, Jazzanova, DJ Sprinkles and Zero 7.

His understanding of how the parts of a track can work has never been more apparent than on his DJ-Kicks mix. In 10 years, playing 80+ gigs a year, including such temples as Berghain, Fabric London, Rex and MOS, he’s absorbed dance history through hard and disciplined work behind the decks. Look at the opening selections of his DJ-Kicks mix to get a glimpse of his amazing ability to fuse totally disparate sound aesthetics into a coherent whole.

With the next months holding an extensive tour schedule for Danilo, dancers around the world will be able to experience his gift as a selector first hand. That is, before he gets back into the studio to start working on his first album as Motor City Drum Ensemble as well as a live act. All this will prove, just as his DJ-Kicks is doing now, that there is no such thing as stagnation in the ever-evolving cosmos of Danilo Plessow!

Courtney Pine (Ft. Omar) – Butterfly / Rules
Friday, July 21st, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Courtney Pine (Ft. Omar) – Butterfly / Rules

Image: 1610972 No musician embodies more the dramatic transformation in the British jazz scene over the past thirty years than Courtney Pine. His debut album, Journey To The Urge Within in 1987, was the first serious jazz album ever to make the British Top 40, notching up sales to qualify for a silver disc.

Aside from being the preeminent figure in the resurgence of British jazz, Courtney became a renowned presenter and broadcaster, best known for his long running radio show for BBC Radio 2, ‘Jazz Crusade’. He was also awarded an O.B.E in the 2000 New Year’s Honours, and was also made a C.B.E in 2009 for services to Music.

As an artist always looking to work outside of and across established musical genres, it is easier to list the musicians and artists he hasn’t worked with, but now in 2017 Courtney releases brand new music featuring another British music legend of equal repute, his Freestyle Records label mate and an artist also honoured for his own creative endeavours, Omar Lyefook M.B.E.

Both tracks of this single are taken from Courtneys’ forthcoming album Black Notes From The Deep – the 19th of his stellar career. The exciting and fresh interpretation of Herbie Hancocks’ Butterfly demonstrates straight away that this is a dream team combination. With Alec Dankworth laying down the bass, Rod Youngs’ drumming underpinning the groove, the song also gives the outstanding keyboards of Robert Mitchell space to stretch out – Omars fantastic vocal performance rides sweetly on top of the dreamy backing vocals of Charleen Hamilton – and of course Courtneys’ flowing, imaginative and creative solo perfects this modern version of a much loved classic.

Rules is a brand new, collaborative composition by Courtney & Omar – the punchy drums and bass line patterns hints simultaneously at classic jazz and funkier club-centric sounds. Courtney cooks on tenor saxophone and also the organ – whilst Omar marinades the super catchy melody with that unmistakable voice.

As an introduction to the forthcoming album Black Notes From The Deep this single points the way to what 2 British legends, both exemplary in their own right – can come up with when joining forces.

Meet the Steoples — Gabriel Reyes-Whittaker and Yeofi Andoh. Gabriel is a longtime producer, under the name Gifted & Blessed a.k.a. GB, integral to the start of the Los Angeles beat scene. He recorded his full-length debut album in 2004, which also marked the first collaboration with vocalist and U.K. native Yeofi on the haunting “Love is the End” single. The two had met through mutual friends, drawn to one another through their shared appreciation for genre-defying creativity.

“Up to that point, there really weren’t too many folks who were experimenting with bridging the genres in so many kinds of diverse ways like we were interested in,” GB says. They were both open-minded, and both reaching for good music instead of being locked into a particular style.

When they met, something clicked. GB was working with certain musical colors and collages that resonated with Yeofi, and the result is Six Rocks, an exploration of sound that often emerges as a collection of unfinished ideas. In lieu of being incomplete, however, GB prefers to describe it as unresolved. There are no typical song structures or chord progressions, or any sense of normalcy here. And that’s a good thing. Much is left to interpretation and imagination.
