“Chapters” is the captivating debut album by hotly tipped Japanese multi-instrumentalist and producer Anchorsong, on Tru Thoughts. BBC Radio 1’s new music guru Huw Stephens, who has heartily championed Anchorsong since seeing him at SXSW in 2009, recently lifted the lid on the LP with an upfront play of the music, fuelling the buzz for […]

The story of James Pants is an unlikely one. The son of two Presbyterian ministers from an American backwater called Spokane, he went from being the goofy white teenage DJ for a black nationalist rap group to a much-loved multi-instrumentalist who can count on fans as diverse as Flying Lotus, Zane Lowe, Erol Alkan and […]

J Dilla – The King Of Beats II

Image: 1605108 Jay Dee a.k.a. J Dilla is widely regarded as one of the greatest producers in hip hop history.
The E-Mu Systems SP-1200 drum machine and sampler was the first electronic instrument
Jay Dee worked with while crafting the incomparable styles and sounds which defined the
early stages of his legendary production. The SP-1200 was his primary tool of choice at the
inception of his career as he created classics for early Slum Village, The Pharcyde, A Tribe
Called Quest, Busta Rhymes and many others. However, as his career moved forward Dilla
began to work on an Akai MPC. And that’s the focus of this collection. The 15 cuts featured
on this vinyl edition are from the groundbreaking “Batches” collection, but were crafted by
Dilla using the MPC.
The MPC Dilla utilized to create the material heard here was recently donated to the
Smithsonian for their National Museum of African American History and Culture scheduled
to open to the public in 2016.
This release is more than a collection of Dilla’s unheard works, it’s a glimpse inside the mind
of a creative genius, a view into Dilla’s artistic process and a must have for any who call
themselves a fan of his musical legacy.

Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers – I Jool Omo / Talking Drum
Wednesday, February 25th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ginger Johnson & His African Messengers – I Jool Omo / Talking Drum

Image: 1595666 Ginger Johnson’s life is one of the greatest untold stories of African music in Europe. A Nigerian immigrant to London in the late 1940’s, who quickly became the rhythmic backbone to the big band of The Edmundo Ros Orchestra and the jazz group of Ronnie Scott. By the mid 1960’s Ginger was considered the only Afro-Latin percussionist to book, which is why he played with everyone from Georgie Fame, Quincy Jones through to The Rolling Stones.

Ginger Johnson was also mentor, guide, guru and father figure to a young Fela Kuti. Gingers house in London was a vibrant hub of African music activity for Fela and an entire host of African & Caribbean musicians who would gather there to catch up, eat and jam for hours on end. To Fela, and all the younger musicians who gravitated around Ginger, he was simply known and addressed as ‘Father’.

Ginger was also instrumental in the beginnings of The Notting Hill Carnival. His own venue, Club Iroko in North London, was a creative hub for groups like Osibisa, Cymande, and also a welcome hang out for visiting legends like Art Blakey, Roland Kirk, and Elvin Jones.

I Jool Omo is an infectious, happy rhythmic extravaganza, where layers of pulsating drums are perfectly meshed with jazzy flute, saxophone and a hypnotic guitar riff whilst the collective vocal lifts the entire track into a high energy, mesmerizing groove. As the chief exponent of the African talking drum, the thunderous beat that opens Talking Drum leaves you in no doubt as to the power and impact of Gingers skilled drumming.

Ginger Johnson’s music is built upon a bedrock of African drums, hi life, and jazz, and is the forerunner of Afrobeat – and Gingers direct and vital influence upon the genre’s undisputed champion Fela Kuti is just one part of a fascinating and underappreciated story that only now is being recognised for its significance.

In “Tuning Echoes” we have the debut album from Mock & […]

The Shacks – Haze
Friday, February 16th, 2018 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Shacks – Haze

Image: 1617447 Fronted by 19-year-old singer/bassist Shannon Wise and 21-year-old guitarist/producer Max Shrager, The Shacks are already well on their way to becoming one
of the year’s big breakouts, and their remarkable debut album, ‘Haze,’ solidifies their status as a band with ability to deliver on the well-deserved buzz.
When Max and Shannon met in high school, a bond was created that has permeated their music since the Shacks first incarnation four years ago. That chemistry
lies at the heart of ‘Haze,’ a record so hypnotic and seductive that it feels more like a whispered late-night secret than a young band’s debut. Produced together by
Shrager and Big Crown co-founder Leon Michels (who’s played with Bradley, Sharon Jones, and Fields in addition to working with The Arcs, Lana Del Rey, and
countless others), the album was recorded in bits and pieces between Shrager’s basement and Michels’ Diamond Mine studio, which the Observer dubbed “the
Shangri La of Soul.”
‘Haze’ opens with the title track, which is, appropriately enough, the first song Shrager and Wise ever wrote together. It’s a spare, smoky tune that shimmers and
sparkles as it shifts in and out of focus, and it’s an ideal gateway into the immersive world of The Shacks. On the breezy “Follow Me,” they channel the infectious
charm of a 60’s girl group, while the soulful “My Name Is” grooves its way through a mesmerizing take on 70’s funk. Much like a dream, the songs often merge the
familiar and the unfamiliar, constructing their own psychedelic reality full of beauty and yearning, all fueled by Wise’s breathy vocals and the unmistakable electricity
of a wildly creative band truly inhabiting their music. “Birds” makes brilliant use of Daptone drum hero Homer Steinwess’s impeccable feel behind the kit, while the
50’s ballad-meets-baroque pop of “Cryin’” tips its cap to Roy Orbison and John Lennon as Shrager takes over lead vocals, and the soulful shuffle of “Texas” belies
a dark and violent undercurrent ripped from the headlines. Through it all permeates an unshakable sense that this is a group performing just for you. “Nobody” finds
the Shacks re-interpreting Phil Spector’s Wagnerian approach to rock & roll, complete with sweeping strings and darkly innocent lyrics. The 13 songs featured on
Haze plays out like the soundtrack to some long lost 16mm film, beckoning you into their grainy, saturated world of analog beauty.
In the short time that they’ve been together, The Shacks have already made an impressive mark. Their hypnotic cover of Ray Davies’ “This Strange Effect”
soundtracked a global iPhone commercial, one which actually stars Wise herself, and their self-titled EP earned the band dates with St. Paul & The Broken Bones,
Chicano Batman, and their Big Crown Records labelmates Lee Fields & The Expressions.

Gabriele Poso – Awakening

Making his BBE debut in 2017 with compilation album ‘The Languages Of Tambores’, described by The Vinyl Factory as “ancestral, evocative and visceral”, Italian multiinstrumentalist Gabriele Poso returns to the label with his new LP ‘Awakening’. Since his debut album ‘From The Genuine World’, released in 2008 on Osunlade’s Yoruba Records, Gabriele has amassed an impressive catalogue of solo work and guest appearances,
not to mention a hectic schedule of live performances. Perhaps Gabriele’s most rounded work to date, ‘Awakening’ captures an artist in full bloom, examining a crossroads between creative and personal paths.
“The birth of my eldest son Viktor caused me to question my career in music and explore other, more ‘secure’ options, but thanks to my wife I quickly realised that to be different from your neighbor doesn’t make you wrong. After all, in this life, does anyone really have any security? So actually Viktor and my family have become my super power: they teach me to believe in myself more then I ever did before. This album is all about that realization, that Awakening.” Encompassing Afro-latin, jazz, soul and dance music elements, glued together by Poso’s distinctive layered live percussion sounds, ‘Awakening’ is peppered with guest
performances and production touches from a talented series of friends. As Gabriele puts it “I like to surround my music with the people I love and want to spend my time with.” A deeply rooted and spiritual project, a few of the tracks featured on ‘Awakening’ will be familiar to those lucky enough to catch Gabriele Poso on tour over the last 12 months, not least his reimagining of the Roy Ayers classic ‘Everybody Loves The Sunshine’. From the stunning cover art by Elvira Gerardi which features Gabriele’s first born son Viktor, to the special music contained within, this album’s message is clear, although as Gabriele succinctly points out: when we talk about love, ‘words never work.’

Arsonists – As The World Burns & Lost In The Fire
Friday, February 16th, 2018 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Arsonists – As The World Burns & Lost In The Fire

Image: 1617755 2018 will mark the return of the original Bushwick Bomb Squad! Legendary emcee crew, the Arsonists have announced a double-album release via Below System Records.

This will include a deluxe edition of the group’s classic debut album “As The World Burns” (released in 1999) which yielded such underground anthems as “Blaze”, “Halloween” and the “Session.”

It will also include “Lost In The Fire”, which will include many unreleased gems including tracks with J-Live, High & Mighty and Mass Influence as well as six new tracks from the group (the first in over fifteen years!) with guest appearances from Vinnie Paz (Jedi Mind Tricks) and Ill Bill (La Coka Nostra, Non-Phixion).

Composed of D-Stroy, Q-Unique, Freestyle, Jise and Swel these Brooklyn spitters were among the most creative wordsmiths and energetic live performers during an extremely fertile period of boom-bap that included the Lyricist Lounge, Rawkus Records, Fat Beats Records and the Stretch & Bobbito show. On the group’s motivation, D-Stroy revealed “we were focused so much on our love of hip-hop that it kept us off the streets, away from drugs, all of us in my parent’s house rhyming and recording.”

After appearing on the Stretch & Bobbito Show, Bobbito Garcia was so impressed as to sign the group to his Fondle ‘Em Records to release several classic singles on wax. The results allowed the crew to hit the road through North America and Europe, many of them leaving New York and the United States for the first time ever. The group toured with such notables as Public Enemy, The Roots and the Wu-Tang Clan.

Top taste-making Indie rock label Matador Records who developed such groups as Guided By Voices, Pavement and Mogwai wanted the Arsonists to be the first hip-hop group on the label. “As The World Burns” was the result of this partnership. Critically acclaimed and well respected, speaking on the enduring legacy of the album, D-Stroy said “I think it’s one of the last albums to champion the four elements of hip-hop, it’s basically our love letter to the culture and a lot of heads identify with that love.”

Though the group dissolved by 2002, the members have kept heads ringing in the entertainment industry including solo releases and forays into film, TV and radio. Summing it up D recalls “I was hosting an event for Nike and one of the executives came up to me and spit one of Q-Unique’s verses verbatim to me. It’s like a whole generation of young heads and college students grew up on our music and are doing something for the movement as well.”

Will Saul – Inside Out

Inside Out is a brand new series that invites DJs and producers to blur the boundaries between traditional artist albums and mix compilations. Coming from Aus Music label head and DJ-Kicks curator Will Saul, the concept encourages artists to showcase their own music and or the music of those in their own individual circles. The mix will be release digitally and on CD, while a selection of the tracks will also be available on double gatefold vinyl.
Each instalment will feature 100% new and unreleased music. It is a chance for artists to take sole creative charge, A&R as they see fit and then commission brand new music specifically for the cause. Depending on who is at the helm, Inside Out will take different forms: producers may wish to represent their own sound with only music they have made themselves or with close collaborators, while DJs and label heads may wish to reflect the sounds and scenes that surround them. The results will be a window into an artist’s world that works as a coherent mix, but also as a treasure trove of fresh new music that steps outside the usual lines of a dance album.
The idea stems from Will Saul’s own approach in the club, which often finds him seeking out brand new and unheard music to play for the first time. That feeling of taking people into the unknown is one that reminds him of the energy and excitement of his early days as a dancer. For Will’s mix he enlists an array of artists who he’s worked with over the years, many of whom have released on one of his labels in that time.
These include the likes of Lone, Pearson Sound, Move D, Gerd, Youandewan, Martyn, Falty DL, Dauwd, Appleblim and Marquis Hawkes.

Ty – A Work Of Heart (2LP)
Friday, February 2nd, 2018 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ty – A Work Of Heart (2LP)

Image: 1617807 For his 5th release, rap afficianado Ty takes us on a journey of works from his heart. He tackles subjects like his childhood neighbourhood Brixton and works through issues over the course of the album of poverty, depression, racism, family, hiphop and the creative process to philosophical musings on life and even imagined film soundtracks. The album, entitled ‘A Work Of Heart’ is produced and predominantly written by Ty. The sounds are a mixture of crisp, bouncy production, live instrumentation and vivid and entertaining lyrics. Featured guests include Tall Black Guy, Wayne Francis (United Vibrations) and the legendary Umar Bin Hassan of the Last Poets. Of the album the artist says “This is my life work, it’s how I feel…I want to upgrade the view of hiphop.” This jazz-infused hiphop album is simultaneously uplifiting and thought-provoking.

‘The Layered Effect’ by US rapper/producer Andy Cooper offers a punchy reminder of the creative fun to be had in digging for breaks, stringing up loops and layering up stratas of sound. Brimming full of delightful inflexions from the world of jazz, easy listening, film soundtracks and Hollywood voices, it’s a perfectly stitched sound patchwork […]

Image: 1617639 Fat Beats Records is proud to present Baker’s Dozen, an exclusive
series that shines a light on the best minds of instrumental hip-hop,
ambient, and electronic music. Each installment gives one artist
carte blanche to capture their signature sound.
Every volume’s limited vinyl pressing features one artist and twelve
tracks, and comes equipped with a 5×7” postcard insert that features
a photo of the artist’s workspace along with the equipment used
in their music-making process. Visually cohesive and packaged
with the utmost attention to detail, Baker’s Dozen is a series that
speaks up for artists whose craft renders voices superfluous, whose
instrumentals alone suffice to make a statement.
Volume eight highlights LA producer Exile, who breaks down his
creative process below:
“Making music from nothing, pre-internet you had to teach yourself
or make homies with the local legend to drop gems on their process
of making beats. Now you can take classes on how to make beats. It
doesn’t matter if you use a Roland MS1 or MPC 2000XL, sampling
records or sampling yourself playing the keys… get lost in the music,
stay thankful, and remember the feeling of why you do this. That is
my process. ”

Danny Watts – Black Boy Meets World
Wednesday, January 17th, 2018 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Danny Watts – Black Boy Meets World

Image: 1617466 This fall, Danny Watts will release his debut album Black Boy Meets World
on Jonwayne’s imprint Authors Recording Company. Beats were supplied
in full by Jonwayne, creating the environments that mesh to Danny Watts’
introspective lyricism and soulful cadences on the mic. The Houston based
rapper has created a body of work that details his life experiences with an
honest and uncompromising lens, jumping out of the Authors Recording
Company gates as the first release after the critically acclaimed Rap Album
Two. Before the release of Black Boy Meets World, Danny Watts is offering
up the album’s lead single “Young & Reckless” feat. Aye Mitch! today.
Danny Watts and Jonwayne recently captured Black Boy Meets World
in the span of only a week, recording the 11-track LP at the Los Angeles
recording facility Cosmic Zoo. Danny also wrote all of the lyrics to the album
in this same window, finishing up to three songs per day as the Cosmic
Zoo sessions occurred in an intense yet efficient form. Mixing and mastering
was completed by Low End Theory’s Daddy Kev and artwork was supplied
by Authors’ creative director Shane Sakanoi. With executive oversight and
production on every track supplied by Jonwayne, guest contributions and
features include Ray Wright of Warm Brew, DIBIA$E, Leaving Records’
Kiefer, Dr. Octagon collaborator Juan Alderete de la Pena, Zeroh, and many
others. The overall effect presents the ethos of hip-hop’s many forms, pulled
into the weight of classic sounding kicks, snares, hi-hats, basslines, keys,
synths, and horns.
The process that brought Danny Watts to this stage of his music career
defines his maturation process as a man and the roads that have split out
from this path. “This whole album is me telling my story from my perspective,”
explains Danny Watts. “Everyone goes through their own unique experiences
in life that forces them to really understand how the world operates. You either
allow yourself to succumb to the pressures of life or just find the strength to
make the best of your environment. Writing this album helped me realize
how some lessons in life are inescapable. I spent my whole life telling myself
that I would never end up like certain people. Thinking that I was better than
a lot of people because a part of me felt and thought differently from most of
my peers. Then I ended up finding myself in those same situations that I just
knew for sure that I wouldn’t end up in.”

Latyrx – The Album (20th Anniversary Edition)
Monday, January 8th, 2018 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Latyrx – The Album (20th Anniversary Edition)

Image: 1617180 20 years after its initial release, the Bay Area uber-classic Latyrx: The
Album – lyricists Lyrics Born and Lateef The Truthspeaker, with
production from DJ Shadow, Chief Xcel and Lyrics Born – still stands as
a seminal recording. It has gone on to resonate with successive
generations of listeners, and influence countless artists. Recorded over
a two-year period, it was the first full-length release from the legendary
Solesides collective, and encapsulates a highly creative and influential
time in hip-hop, frequently dubbed The Golden Age.
Over the course of the original release’s 42 minutes, not only can you
hear Lyrics Born and Lateef literally growing into themselves as artists,
but you can also hear the germination of the Solesides sound, first
given birth at California’s UC Davis in the early ‘90s, driven by
brothers-in-beats-and-rhymes Blackalicious and DJ Shadow.
Partially by design, and partially out of necessity, Latyrx—and the
Solesides crew as a whole—became trailblazers. Lyrics Born
remembers (in this set’s lengthy liner notes), “We really wanted to
explore. New styles, new subject matter, new textures, new vocabulary.
It came down to even wanting to do words in the English language that
you had never heard in a rap song before. It was all about pushing.”
And push they did, with game-changing lyrical exercises like “Say
That,” “Balcony Beach,” “The Wreckoning” and “The Muzappers Mix.”
Beyond cuts that back-in- the-day fans know from the original
sequence, the two bonus tracks included in this edition are: “Looking
Over A City” [produced by El-P], originally released on the Quannum
compilation Spectrum. And “The Last Trumpet,” which closes this new
deluxe edition. Originally appearing on the 2003 Lyrics Born solo album
Later That Day, it’s one of Latyrx’s most-realized collaborations, and
one of their most overtly-politically-themed songs.
This deluxe, 2-LP issue of Latyrx: The Album is a must for longtime
fans and newly-initiated listeners alike, with in-depth liner notes by
veteran Bay Area journalist Eric Arnold (including input from Lyrics
Born and Lateef The Truthspeaker) and packaged in a gatefold format.

Johnny Clarke – Rockers Time Now

Image: 1617089 Get On Down presents an often overlooked crucial reggae
release from the 1970s with Johnny Clarke’s “Rockers
Time Now.” The record is a mix of covers and originals,
including ethereal versions of the The Abyssinians “Satta
Massagana” and “Declaration of Rights,” smash hits on
the island just the year before. “Rockers Time Now” was
first issued in 1976, Clarke had just been named artist of
the year in Jamaica for the second year in a row. This is
just one of three full lengths he released that year as this
was a very prolific period for Clarke, in particular from
1974 onward when his output was directed by legendary
producer Bunny Lee. The pairing resulted in a creative
energy that resonates to this day. The release was
recorded at Channel 1 with Bunny Lee producing, which of
course means the band backing the popular Jamaican
vocalist was The Aggrovators, which at the time included
Robbie Shakespeare, Earl “Chinna” Smith, Augustus
Pablo, and Aston “Family Man” Barrett. The release was
mixed at King Tubby’s by Osbourne Ruddock…aka King
Tubby. Crucial all the way around.
Now is the time to rediscover a classic of the genre,
“Rockers Time Now”.

Tommy Guerrero – Soul Food Taqueria
Tuesday, November 21st, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Tommy Guerrero – Soul Food Taqueria

Image: 1616638 It’s rare that a certain sound is entirely an artist’s own. Although undeniably a stew of impeccable influences – from blues to folk to Latin to dusty funk, soul and hip-hop – one cannot hear a Tommy Guerrero song without immediately recognising it as his – and his only.

The cult skater from San Francisco is globally renowned as one of the original members of the legendary “Bones Brigade” team. And as an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, his laid-back soul is beloved by all who’ve basked in its blissful glow.

There’s something elemental about this music that really stirs the soul. Strikingly beautiful and instantly addictive, it’s a kind of funk-fuelled, melody-driven, groove-based magic. There’s a serenity and heart in the playing that radiates warmth and splendour, as if crafted for endless sunsets. His albums that surfaced on Mo Wax at the turn of the century have been treasured since their release and it’s two of his most vital LPs that we’re honoured to reintroduce.

The originals were quietly pressed on to a single piece of vinyl so we’ve worked closely with Tommy this year to bring you these fresh, limited editions. They have been lovingly remastered, cut nice and loud on to heavyweight double vinyl and presented in deluxe gatefold jackets.

Soul Food Taqueria continued Guerrero’s guitar soul but represented a step forward with its polished production and greater complexity of instrumentation. Denied the promotion it deserved upon release, it flew under the radar. It is now the most wanted record of his wondrous back catalogue.

Guerrero’s atmospheric touch and subtle guitar provide lush, glimmering pieces of musical texture. Within his spacious compositions, uniquely arranged instruments flourish alongside each other to create a languid soundtrack for halcyon days.

As ever, the diversity on display is beguiling. From bossa nova, samba and cumbia rhythms to understated folk, funk and soul grooves, this is another exotic set of mellow gold, perfectly represented by ESPO’s memorable artwork. Furthermore, the title’s hybridity reflects the intoxicating sweep of stylistic flavours served up, reminding us that, however tricky it is to categorise Guerrero’s special blend, it’s always a pleasure to indulge in something so creative and adventurous.

Dubby, bass-heavy instrumentals give way to moody folk-soul – witness “It Gets Heavy”, featuring melancholic vocals from Gresham Taylor – whilst “Thank You MK” is a gentle ode to the tropics, featuring ethereal instrumentation, bright bass and warm, jazzy guitars. The second half in particular contains a number of stunning ambient tracks – check “Lost Unfound”, “Another Brother Gone” and “Broken Blood” – built around minimalist, laid-back grooves and detailed guitar orchestrations which wouldn’t be out of place on the latest Jonny Nash release.

Guerrero closes this flawless set with a moment of true beauty. Restrained and graceful, “Falling Awake” is a pared back piece containing meditative guitar melodies set against melancholic piano arrangements. It brings proceedings to the most peaceful close. Seductively good, it reminds you just how great simplicity can sound.

Ryan Porter – Spangle-Lang Lane
Tuesday, October 24th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ryan Porter – Spangle-Lang Lane

Image: 1615588 Running in parallel with the powerful wave of transformation that occurred
with the advent of recording technology in the 1800s, children’s music has
been a critically important part of the evolving pace of modern culture.
Through the entire body of children’s music, few have truly deviated from
the normal harmonic and melodic structures of past composers. This is
about to change in the fall of 2017 as West Coast Get Down co-founder
Ryan Porter will present Spangle-Lang Lane, a collection of music
that revamps and puts a facelift on some of the world’s most beloved
children’s songs.
The ethos of Spangle-Lang Lane equally lives in the visual realm,
coupled with puppets and a flm series that takes on the life of the West
Coast Get Down and various jazz luminaries. From episode to episode,
you can expect to see main characters Ryan Porter and Crazy Jake,
along with puppet versions of Duke Ellington, Kamasi Washington, Louis
Armstrong, Brandon Coleman, Tony Williams, Terrace Martin, Miles
Davis, Thundercat, John Coltrane, and many others. As the in?uence
of Sesame Street started to flter into Ryan Porter’s dreams, he quickly
sought out the right tools and knowledge for creating his own puppets.
Ryan adds more detail on how the puppet world of the album formed.
“The vision for having puppets as part of Spangle-Lang Lane came
from the in?uence of the magical world of Jim Henson, but I also had a
dream where I could see all of these puppets so vividly playing gigs and
recording. I had these dreams so much that I looked into puppet making
classes so that I could learn how to make these characters that I saw so
vividly in my dreams. After a few years of learning how to make puppets,
which is not an easy thing to do, I fnally made prototypes of the puppets
that I had seen in my dreams. These puppets are the ones that I use
to flm in my videos to help teach kids music lessons and history about
older musicians that aren’t with us any longer. The type of musicians that
made a huge impact on how music sounds today, revamped through the
power of puppetry.”
For the Spangle-Lang Lane record release event, Ryan Porter will take
the puppets he’s created and the momentum of the video series for a
special concert in Los Angeles this fall. The puppets will take the stage
with Ryan to perform the music off the LP, striving to create a unique
concert experience the jazz world has never seen. This fall will serve as
a very special stretch of time for Ryan Porter and Spangle-Lang Lane,
bringing to light a lifelong pursuit that will have the power to beneft
thousands of people across current and future generations. SpangleLang Lane is an achievement unlike any other, serving as the latest
chapter of the West Coast Get Down’s growing legacy and the beginning
of Ryan Porter’s tenure in the spotlight.

Lyman Woodard Organisation – Saturday Night Special (180g/Gatefold)
Monday, October 16th, 2017 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Lyman Woodard Organisation – Saturday Night Special (180g/Gatefold)

Image: 1615762 In association with DJ Amir’s 180 Proof Records, BBE is honoured to present another gem from the small yet significant Strata catalogue. A precursor to New York’s Strata East, Detroit’s Strata Records was founded in the late 1960s by former Blue Note artist Kenny Cox. Starting life as a music-led community organisation, coffee shop studio and venue, Strata released only a few titles as a record label, gaining the imprint a cult following among record collectors and jazz lovers across the globe. Possibly the best known of Strata’s releases, The Lyman Woodard Organization’s ‘Saturday Night Special’ is rightly heralded as a jazz fusion classic. Recorded in 1975, ‘Saturday Night Special’ features organ, electric piano and Mellotron by bandleader Lyman Woodard alongside guitar and bass by Ron English, with drums and percussion by Leonard King, Bud Spangler & Lorenzo “Mr. Rhythm” Brown respectively. Despite the fairly sparse instrumentation, ‘Saturday Night Special’ lays down an impressive wall of sound, powerfully atmospheric in its almost low-fi aesthetic. Hinting at more traditional jazz, rhythm & blues, afrocuban styles and more, the uniqueness of this album is surely in its feel: summoning up images of a vast industrial landscape, assembly lines and urban decay. In other words, this record sounds like Detroit. No great album artwork is complete without a good story to match, and ‘Saturday Night Special’ does not disappoint. Snapped by photographer and political activist Leni Sinclair (responsible for seminal pictures of Miles Davis, Fela Kuti and John Coltrane and many others), the cover image shows the contents of Lyman Woodard’s pockets placed on the hotel bed after a show: cigarette papers, cash and a pistol. Following Woodard’s death in 2009, this incredible album was reissued in highly limited numbers by Wax Poetics, now just as hard to come by as the original pressings. It’s our pleasure to make this important and influential chapter in the story of contemporary jazz available on vinyl once again.

For Fans Of: J Dilla, Nostalgia 77, Herbie Hancock, Roy Ayers, Miles Davis.
