Jay Dee (J Dilla) – Jay Deelicious – The Delicious Vinyl Years
Thursday, November 17th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Jay Dee (J Dilla) – Jay Deelicious – The Delicious Vinyl Years

Image: 1607464 Jay Dee, aka J Dilla, emerged as a Hip Hop producer to be
reckoned with in 1995 when his name was attached to the
first single from The Pharcyde’s eagerly anticipated
sophomore album “Labcabincalifornia”. Hit play on his first
Pharcyde production “Runnin” and you have the launch
point of a producer’s career that mesmerized, titillated and
expanded the domes of Hip Hop fans for the next decade.
“Jay Deelicious: Originals, Remixes & Rarities” documents
Jay Dilla’s early production on Delicious Vinyl.

Working closely with The Pharcyde and Michael “Mike Floss” Ross, (Delicious Vinyl’s founder), Jay Dee
was instrumental in keeping The Pharcyde’s second album as ear poppin’ and bugged as their maiden
classic “Bizarre Ride To The Pharcyde”, stepping up big time after the group parted ways with “Bizarre”
producer J-Swift. In addition to original productions and remixes for “Labcabin”, Jay Dee skillfully
worked with the label on incredible mixes for the Brand New Heavies, as well as unreleased remixes for
former BNH singer, N’Dea Davenport. From the jazzed out Rhodes syncopation of “Sometimes”
featuring Q-Tip, to the crazy cutting up of “Got To Give It Up” for “Saturday Night” featuring Mos Def,
Jay Dee shows there’s no tempo he can’t freak on some otherworldly jazzed up funk tip. So put on your
head phones and take a trip into the early work of a Hip Hop master

Ojeda Penn – Lost Funk & Disco Gems Vol.6 : Official EP
Friday, August 19th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Ojeda Penn – Lost Funk & Disco Gems Vol.6 : Official EP

Image: 1605776 As part of our 10 years anniversary Mukatsuku is proud to release the holy grail instrumental long version co produced by Tommy Stewart of ‘Brotherson’ from Atlanta USA resident Ojeda Penn.

There were two versions of the album Happiness on the IFE independent label. They looked almost identical but the first version contained the now rarer elongated jazz fused instrumental version of ‘Brotherson’ and then a few months later they recut the album with a much shorter version adding strings and vocals.

The former version is now being sold up to £500 so this 12 is a welcome release to the reissue market. According to Mr Penn this is the first time either version has been reissued officially and Mukatsuku after many years of discussion is glad to finally be in a position to finally put out both versions on one phat 12”

Paternoster, that UFO of a rock album released unceremoniously on a custom-pressed CBS Austria long player in 1972, is the stuff of legend. It’s been known to the rock collecting elite since the 1980s, when it was first rediscovered, and it quickly became one of those rock records, the records you hear about only if […]

The musical style that became known as Zamrock came to embody the economic despair that followed the 1973-1974 oil crisis, which flung Zambia into recession and exacerbated a wide range of social tensions. Much of Zamrock also captured the controversy of wider politics in Africa and the world. Perhaps the finest example of this is […]

Peliroja – Injusticia
Friday, January 8th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Peliroja – Injusticia

Image: 1601470 Producer and guitarist Jacob Plasse has united some of his old friends—players from the Daptones, Pedrito Martinez Group, and Los Hacheros—to form Peliroja, a New York collective inspired by the sounds of Ethiopia, Dominican Republic, Cuba, and the Congo. Their debut album, Injusticia, will be out next week, August 19, on Chulo Records, a label devoted to the transcendental sounds of New York Latin music.

“Some of the musicians in Peliroja and I would meet up after school on Jane Street in the West Village, at a stoop with some Old English, a spliff, and a tape deck,” says Jacob, best known as producer and musician for salsa masters, Los Hacheros. “We were gangly, awkward 15-year-olds and not cool by any means. I’m not sure how we became obsessed with obscure ’70s funk and Afrobeat music, but that’s what we would listen to: the 3 Sounds, Lyn Collins, Africa 70.” Two decades later, his friends have gone on to become key players in the Brooklyn funk scene, and Jacob has spent the last ten years refining his music on the road with salsa and bachata bands.

Produced and cowritten by Plasse, Injusticia was recorded live to tape at his studio in Brooklyn, in the spirit of the music he was raised on. The groove to this music is deep and heard in the way the Daptones’ rhythm section—drummer Homer Steinweiss and bassist Nick Movshon—play off the polyrhythms of Carlos Padron’s timbales and Jhair Salas’s congas, forming a new fusion of old sounds. Jainardo Batista’s vocals soar over these rhythms, propelled forward by Mike Eckroth’s mercurial arrangements.

“I think the experience of growing up in New York and getting to hear and play with all these wonderful musicians and having them in my life has let me create something that is true to myself, and hopefully them as well,” Jacob adds. “This album is for those boys on the stoop who hadn’t figured out how to be in this world, but were lucky enough to know what they loved.”

Meridian Brothers – Los Suicidas
Wednesday, November 18th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Meridian Brothers – Los Suicidas

Image: 1600950 Brand new release on the Soundway Label by the Meridian Brothers.

The genre-crossing eight track album is the first of a trilogy, inspired by a Colombian local legend Jaime Llano Gonzalez, a Hammond organist famous for playing traditional Colombian music such as Pasillos, Bambucos, Cumbias, and foreign rhythms such as foxtrots or waltzes, in an ambient style.

“The album was written as an ambient record but at the same time searching for an image of a impossible virtuoso organist” says Eblis Javier Alvarez Vargas, the man behind The Meridian Brothers. Gonzalez’s style of playing traditional rhythms on the Hammond organ inspired Vargas to build a whole synthesizer ensemble simulating this sound and developing intricate textures and counterpoint. This style of play is often impossible for a single organist, giving rise to Vargas’ description of the genre as “impossible organ music”.

Requiring some digital sequencing techniques to achieve the result in the album, Vargas also chose to utilize an acoustic rhythm section, including acoustic Bass, percussion or drums, also adding electronic drums and samplers.

Album opener ‘Vertigo’ is streaming ahead of the release. Inspired by Gyorgy Ligeti’s piano studio of the same name, the track simulates an eternal fall in melody, with the listener feeling the effects of vertigo. Elsewhere on the record ‘Contienda’ is inspired an Anibal Velazquez tune, called ‘Kung-Fu’, ‘Ilidio’ is inspired by a vintage romantic bolero, ‘Lágrima’ and ‘Amargura’ are based on traditional rhythms Bambuco and Pasillo, and ‘Cazador’, a fast Cumbia, was inspired by a poem about a hunter and his daily habits.

The Braen’s Machine – Temi Ritmici e Dinamici (LP+CD)
Friday, October 16th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on The Braen’s Machine – Temi Ritmici e Dinamici (LP+CD)

Image: 1600190 If you are among those who own the two previous Braen’s Machine LPs, “Underground” and “Quarta pagina”, you’re probably already well aware of one of Italian library music best kept secrets, that is the real identities of those hiding behind the pseudonyms Braen and Gisteri. These were the monikers of Alessandro Alessandroni and Oronzo De Filippi, directed by Piero Umiliani and his record label Liuto. With “Temi ritmici e dinamici” (Rhythmic and dynamic themes) the plot thickens and gives us two other aliases to unveil, with each of them signing one of the two sides of the album: G. Ugolini and Awake, we believe, though, that the already mentioned Alessandroni and De Filippi also hide behind these nicknames.

In contrast with “Underground” and “Quarta pagina”, “Temi ritmici e dinamici” offers brighter, less psychedelic atmospheres, leaving room to beat sounds, to a swinging rhythm section, to the Hammond organ (“Gara” resembles the James Taylor Quartet, but a decade earlier), and even to moog and synthesizers (“Dilettanti”). Despite a lighter and an almost purely entertaining context, the album also allows for experimentation, as can be heard in the two songs that close both sides: “Esercizi Ginnici” and “Aspetti Grotteschi”. There’s no better soundtrack than “Temi ritmici e dinamici” for your ‘outdoor activities’ (“Attività all’aperto”), or if you’re always seeking for ‘competition’ (“Competizione”). An exercise that works perfectly, even while comfortably lying on the couch…

“Temi ritmici e dinamici” offers brighter, less psychedelic atmospheres, leaving room to beat sounds, to a swinging rhythm section, to the Hammond organ and even to moog and synthesizers. Despite a lighter and an almost purely entertaining context, the album also allows for experimentation, as can be heard in the two songs that close both sides: “Esercizi Ginnici” and “Aspetti Grotteschi”.

Blackalicious – Imani Vol.1
Thursday, October 15th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Blackalicious – Imani Vol.1

Image: 1600375 It’s been a decade since the last Blackalicious LP, 2005’s The Craft. But the influential hip-hop duo comprised of rapper Gift of Gab and producer Chief Xcel have come full-circle on their expansive new album, Imani, Vol. 1, which will be self-released through the group’s PledgeMusic campaign.

”Imani Vol. 1 is our fourth album and marks another milestone in our career,” Chief Xcel tells Rolling Stone. ”Each album we do together tends to be a journey within itself that represents a very specific chapter of our lives. From Bosko’s timeless talk box to Zap Mama’s vocal brilliance, the ensemble of musicians, MCs, and vocalists involved in making Imani Vol. 1 all brought something very unique to the project that helped us grow and continue to expand the sound of Blackalicious.”

”On Fire Tonight,” a propulsive cut from the album, is available to stream below. The horn-driven track, which features a soulful guest vocal from Myron (of Myron & E), showcases Gift of Gab’s limber verbal gymnastics and Chief Xcel’s dynamic, propulsive production style.

Blackalicious began work on Imani (the Swahili word for ”faith”) three years ago, lining up guest appearances from several rappers (Lifesavas, Lateef, Lyrics Born), funk band Monophonics, polyphonic Afro-pop vocalist Zap Mama, hip-hop/soul musician Bosko and black roots musician Fantastic Negrito, among others. The first installment focuses primarily on the duo themselves. ”We wanted people to get Blackalicious,” Gift of Gab told Exclaim in January. ”I think that Volume Two may be a bit more guest-heavy, but with this one, because it’s been so long since we put out a record, we wanted people to get Blackalicious, you know?”

Though it’s been 10 years since their last album, the duo have remained busy with other projects: In 2013, Xcel joined RV Salters (General Elektriks) to release Walking Into a Burning House, his debut collaboration with Salters as Burning House. Gift of Gab has released three solo LPs – including 2012’s The Next Logical Progression. That same year, the rapper suffered kidney failure from his Type 1 diabetes, he’s continuing dialysis treatments while awaiting a kidney donor.

London Elektricity – Are We There Yet?

Buena Medicina in Kooperation mit The Dubby Conquerors

Available from 26.06.2015

Dom & Roland – Unofficial Jah VIP / Outta Endz VIP
Monday, July 21st, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Dom & Roland – Unofficial Jah VIP / Outta Endz VIP

Image: 1590050 Two VIP cuts of last year’s Metalheadz monster Dom & Roland tracks, pressed up JA style as a 7” sure to become a collectors edition!

Unofficial Jah VIP : This time Dom leaves the 2 step drop out completely as he goes in with more subs, more kicks and more dub FX. The best way to describe this VIP is the wild nature of Scratch Perry channelled through Dom’s engineering skills for the benefit of 4am London. Is that a Sleng Teng bass re-edit we can hear too?

Outta Endz VIP : First heard on the infamous Metalheadz Christmas Podcast, this one caused mayhem when aired by Goldie. If the A side is Scratch Perry then this one is King Tubby, In typical dub style the ends are left untied and the track is all the more funky for it. Dom’s drum shuffle execution is unrelenting- a true VIP wrapping up Dom’s closest foray into Jamaica for a very long time. Available from 30.06.2014

Artificial Intelligence / Loxy & Resound – Warhorse / Paradigms
Monday, May 5th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Artificial Intelligence / Loxy & Resound – Warhorse / Paradigms

Image: 1588358 The wait is over- PB4 is here. Perhaps one of the most revered album series in drum & bass is back with a vengeance, and some are saying it maybe the best yet.

First up we have the triumvirate of Glenn & Zula A.I and DRS with Warhorse – A very apt title for a very powerful, uncompromising and snarling stepper, DRS spits venom and gives way to a screwface-bassline that envelopes everything in its path. The very definition of war horse is well and truly on display here. As opener for PB4 it really sets the tone for the album- No bullsh*t Headz2014.

On the flip we have two graduates from the university of Rufige- Loxy & Resound. Their contribution to the project is ‘Paradigms’, It’s classic Headz flavour in that it’s a perfect mix of light and dark. The intro is all about swirling synths, haunting vocals and effected percussion until the reese drops and the landscape quickly changes into a breakbeat accented step and three dimensional EFX.

This 2 of 2 sampler for Platinum Breakz is a dancefloor led affair for DJs and dancers alike, but after you begin unwrapping the layers there is altogether different beast at hand.
