Danny Scrilla – Higher Plane
Saturday, September 5th, 2015 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Danny Scrilla – Higher Plane

His sound avoids easy categorization – it is deeply rooted in traditional dubwise, while seeming to pull in rhythmic, textural and melodic inspiration from a futuristic revisioning of jungle, footwork and house. Available from 11.09.2015

Sun Ra – Planets Of Life Or Death

4 . DISCIPLINE 27-II / WHAT PLANET IS THIS 23.47

Enlightenment is…. our tomorrow… It has no plane…. of sorrow
Hereby, our invitation… We do invite you…. Be of our Space World
Sun Ra And His Intergalactic Research Arkestra ’Enlightenment’
Within their 1973 European tour, Sun Ra and his Arkestra had just completed
a residency at the legendary Gibus in Paris in October before travelling to
Amiens for a Sunday afternoon concert. Those filing into the city’s Maison de
la Culture that day would have little idea of the intense, visceral experience
that awaited them. “Sun Ra’s use of the Arkestra as his instrument in an
onslaught of sound, colour and movement stimulated and even shocked the
senses and the shakras of audience participants onto a higher plane of spirit
consciousness,“ explains the Arkestra’s Knoel Scott.
On Side 1, the session kicks off with the theatrical overture, ’Enlightenment’ as
Sun Ra and vocalist June Tyson invite the audience to “be of our space world“.
Ra then moves into a rare instrumental version of ’Love In Outer Space’,
transforming the perennial Arkestra classic into a raw, ritualistic experience:
“this was a vehicle for the Arkestra’s space dancers. Close your eyes and
imagine them writhing across the stage in celestial homage,“ explains Scott.
Side 2 of the album opens with the glistening ’Lights On A Satellite’, a feature
for the spiritual tenor sax of John Gilmore, playing in unison with trumpeter
Kwame Hadi. Closing track, the epic, chaotic, anxious ’Discipline 27-II / What
Planet Is This’ moves from abstract, freeform keyboard work from Sun Ra to
a walking groove as Sun Ra and June Tyson take a thinly veiled psychedelic
swipe at life on earth: “If this is a planet of life, why do people die here? “
Following 2014’s landmark compilation presented by Marshall Allen, ’In the
Orbit Of Ra’, Strut and Art Yard join forces once more for the first release
anywhere of ’Planets Of Life Or Death’. Recorded direct from the sound
board and mastered from first generation reel to reel, the title is exclusively
available for Record Store Day 2015. The release features rare photos from
Sun Ra’s 1973 European tour by photographer Jan Persson with sleeve notes by
Knoel Scott.

Count Ossie & The Mystic Revelation Of Rastafari – Grounation (Gatefold 3LP)
Friday, September 16th, 2016 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Count Ossie & The Mystic Revelation Of Rastafari – Grounation (Gatefold 3LP)

Die Reggae Koryphäe David Katz bezeichnet “Grounation” als “The mother of all nyahbinghi albums”.

The mother of all nyahbinghi albums (by David Katz for MOJO)
“The wild jazz jams held at Count Ossie’s Rastafari encampment in th east Kingston hills gave rise to the ska genre in the late ’50s and early ’60s. Ossie’s drum troupe was featured on various 45s throughout the ska era, notably giving Oh Carolina its dramatic cadences, and things stepped up to a higher plane when the drummers merged with the Mystics, the jazz group led by visionary saxophonist Cedric ‘Im’ Brooks. “Grounation” was the expanded group’s ground-breaking 1973 debut, and its mix of jazz, reggae and poetic oration, all driven by livid nyahbinghi beats, given a sonic portrait of the Rastafari movement of the day, its adherents striving to make sense of their fractured identities in post-independent Jamaica. Though there’s occasional surface noise on this current reissue, the material still sounds incredibly fresh and raw, remaining essential listening”

Fatnice – Peace Love Unity and Havin Fun
Friday, June 20th, 2014 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Fatnice – Peace Love Unity and Havin Fun

Image: 1589954 DJ support from Rich Medina, Kev Beadle, DJ Cash Money, Eavesdrop Radio and KCRW. Fatnice is multi talented to say the least. The avant garde MC, producer, singer, and writer grew up listening to tons of records and tapes from his aunts collections which were comprised primarily of soul and funk gems. A prolific house head, Fatnice became entrenched in the boombap sounds of hiphop via the roar of Melle Melle rhyming The Message in 1982. An avid writer of poetry Fatnice found it addicting being able to combine rhymes with beats to create music.

Born in Chicago and being in love with education, Fatnice traveled to Atlanta, GA, in 1992 in pursuit of higher learning at Clark Atlanta University. During his matriculation Fatnice continued to delve deep into the abyss of music via record collecting, checking out shows at the famous Funk Jazz Cafe, and battling MC’s around the Atlanta University Center. Although Fatnice had been performing since the age of 11, he would get a true taste of the stage upon landing in the City of Philadelphia in the fall of 98.

Fatnice found himself in Philadelphia, once again pursuing higher learning and rocking open mics on the campus of The University of Pennsylvania’s’ Veranda Room(The Gathering). Shortly after his arrival Fatnice linked with classmate Darin Tolliver (aka Gamez) and became a member of Philly juggernaut Prophets of Ghetto having the honor of opening up for the likes of Public Enemy and Dilated Peoples. Upon graduating from PENN in 2000, Fatnice’s decision to stay in Philly led him to a life of recording and traveling internationally with the now defunct Philadelphia based hiphop trio 84. Fatnice has had the humbling experience of working with greats such as DJ Cash Money, Bahamadia, Cee Knowledge of Digable Planets and a host of others.

Presently Fatnice, a true believer in the art of moving the crowd, still performs, records and writes as well as flexing his vocal talents under the alias Mojo Green. Along with his production partner Blaak the 9th Man, the two have created Welcome To Soulville where Fatnice releases material such as his project ‘It’s Nice To Meet You’

“Soulville is like being on a runaway train with no direction..You don’t know what to expect..All you know is that it will be a soulful & funky ride musically..” (DJ Cash Money)

“Fat Nice & Blaak The 9th Man are two of Philadelphia’s best kept musical secrets. People really have no idea how deep their sonic rabbit hole goes. These guys got more talent in their left pinky finger nails than many of your favorite pop stars have in their entire entourages. Yeah, I said that. Welcome to Soulvillle.” (Rich Medina)

“Soulville is like a never ending well of knowledge & Fatnice/Blaak are like the men who replenishes the people of the village.” (Hezekiah)

2. Peace Love Unity and Havin Fun (Windy City Mix)

Boban & Marko Markovic Orchestra – Gipsy Manifesto
Wednesday, November 13th, 2013 | Posted in Products | Comments Off on Boban & Marko Markovic Orchestra – Gipsy Manifesto

Image: 1584429 Growing from balkan to world champions, Boban and Marko release
their Gipsy Manifesto, a musical call for change and a sonic striving
for higher truth, drafted and crafted in the school of life.
Ancient melodies that have worked their way down the silk road to the
beaches of the Adriatic Sea, played on the instruments of 19th-century
Czech Military Bands against the throbbing rhythms that have driven the
wild dances of innumerable generations‘ worth of Roma
celebrations – this is Balkan Brass Band music. The saturation of multicultural
elements that has created this music, though, is far from a completed
process. In the hands of Boban and Marko Markoviæ, the evolution is ongoing.
These musical visionaries, a virtuosic father and his prodigious son, are active
reinterpreters of this hallowed tradition. Their brand of Brass Band music
is contemporary and big-city-ready, while staying well-rooted in the rural
traditions that made it. The aesthetic of the band draws ready comparisons
to horn-drenched funk music, New Orleans brass band ensembles, and
classic Jamaican ska, but the rhythms and the melodies: these are distinctly
Balkan.
“Having dominated the Balkan brass world in the20th century, Boban
and Marko have now chosen to do no less than redefine the genre.
There isn‘t a band on the planet that can touch them.“
Frank London
